Kim Se-jung is Brewing Love with Lee Jong-won

It’s time to raise a toast with ENA’s upcoming rom-com Brewing Love, which will have its spirited heroine Kim Se-jung (The Uncanny Counter 2) clinking glasses with the perceptive Lee Jong-won (Bad Memory Eraser). As our apéritif, we have script reading stills to whet our appetite ahead of the drama’s premiere.

Through six years of diligent work, our heroine Chae Yong-joo (Kim Se-jung) has earned the moniker of “the legendary sales queen” at the liquor company she works at. She’s fervent and direct, bolstered by a staunch constitution and steady mentality befitting her time in the special forces. Alas, Yong-joo is also partial to keeping her emotions bottled up — that is, until her branch finds itself facing imminent closure.

Resolving to revitalize her branch’s sales through introducing a new alcohol, Yong-joo seeks out the brewery CEO Yoon Min-joo (Lee Jong-won). With skills worthy of the “brewmaster” title, Min-joo’s beer is extraordinary enough to shake up the market — which is exactly what Yong-joo needs. But Min-joo is an empath who’s highly attuned to others’ feelings. In an effort to avoid the overwhelm that his extreme sensitivity often brings on, he’s retreated to a quiet countyside village so he can block out the influence of extraneous emotions.

Having focused solely on his brewery and his own emotions all this while, Min-joo soon finds his tranquil life upended by Yong-joo’s relentless sales pitches. Adding on to the chaos is Shin Do-hyun (Doom At Your Service) as the practical Bang Ah-reum, a planning team manager competing against her rival Yong-joo to recruit Min-joo first. Luckily for our brewer, his free-spirited best friend Oh Chan-hwi — played by Baek Sung-chul (Tell Me That You Love Me) — is in his corner, toast truck and all.

Adorably, our lead characters’ names match their personalities, since they can be read as “brave liquor” and “sensitive liquor” respectively. Will the straightforward “lager” Yong-joo mesh with the delicate “ale” Min-joo, creating a harmonious blend of complementary flavors? Or will their encounters leave them all shaken (not stirred) up? Either way, it’s certainly worth a shot!

Helmed by PD Park Seon-ho (Business Proposal) with scripts penned by Lee Jung-shin, Brewing Love will pour its first glass on November 4.

I don't really love the poster, but I adore KSJ, so will definitely watch for her.

I don't like the poster either. It would probably be a turn off to me if this is the final official option.

Lee Jong Won doesn't look like himself! I don't think that's the poster though. I really hope not. It looks like a plain promo photo.

I totally agree about it not looking like himself and to an extent, she looks a bit different too but his is worse. Is that a photshop filter thing?

Yeah, it's a photo editing/filter issue.

It looks like either a levels got pushed to crazy levels to whiten everything in photoshop or it went through some obnoxious app like snow to make everyone look white with no pores, and taking out all their actual real facial features in the process. I assume (hope) this isn't what they'd use for a poster.

Ughhh I don't like when stories have empath characters. But I'll probably still watch this for Kim Sejeong

Both leads are adorable. I thought Se jung was too dynamic and lovely for her ml in business proposal and Jong Won managed to be sweet enough for me to notice him even opposite Honey Lee in Knight flower, so I'm definitely looking forward to them doing something really fun together. I hope the writers manage to keep both rom and com throughout too.

As a huge beer fan, and someone who knows its history well, I am really looking forward to this one. I like the blending of beer styles metaphor for the relationship, but just to be really pedantic about it, although beer blending is certainly a thing, the blending of lager and ale is not as a common. Blending of lager and ale yeast prior to brewing beer is done all the time, but the most common beer blend is a blend of ales, the black and tan, where a light ale (pale) is blended with a dark one (a stout).

You're welcome for this bit of totally unnecessary information, and feel free to tag me if you want to be further bored by beer trivia. I'm sure everyone is looking forward to my comments on this drama, where I write lengthy discursions on how they got the brewing details wrong.

I like this casting!

Kim Se-Jung has this perfect energy for rom-com!

Lee Jong-Won should get the girl this time! But where are his glory hair?

Shin Do-Hyun was super cute in Once Upon a Small Town and really good as the young male lead in Tell Me That You Love Me.

Love the article and all the wordplay! Brewing Love is a cute title. I like the leads so I hope this is a good show. The possibility of the FL being too in ML's face and space is high though. They gotta balance it right.

I agree that it could tip into overbearing and unbearable, but what's giving me some hope is that the female lead is described as keeping her emotions bottled inside, which I like. Because most of the time, it's an outgoing and cheerful female lead with a cold, aloof male lead who keeps his emotions locked inside. I'm hopeful that the stereotypical rom gendered personality being changed out means there will be more nuances too for both.

I have enjoyed two recent ENA dramas THE MIDNIGHT STUDIO and (a classic) LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND so with the title change I am now looking forward to following Lee Jong-won’s terrific performance in MBC’s KNIGHT FLOWER by watching BREWING LOVE. Please be available on a legal stream in the US (that I subscribe to).

The potential to bring in alcohol PPL in new ways is keeping this on the watchlist for me. I know the industry needs the money so having novel ways of making PPL interesting is always a win for me. I am loving the anti cigarette PPL in No gains no love so I am hoping it comes in with something similar re excessive alcohol consumption.
