[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Lost and found shoes

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Lost and found shoes

Your mission:

Shoes play a shining role in dramas, but this week we’re only looking for two instances: (1) Those where someone loses a shoe (like our out-of-work heroine in Episode 1 of Romance is a Bonus Book) and (2) those where someone places a shoe on someone else’s foot. Extra (imaginary) points if you know a drama that combines the two, where a lost shoe is found and placed on the rightful owner’s foot, a la Cinderella.

Reference drama:

Romance is a Bonus Book (Episode 1)

I recall a scene in Fight My Way where nerdy Choi Woo Shik buys (too small) sneakers for the FL in an attempt to woo her. I think he puts them on for her too.

Though his best “wooing” attempt was when he tried the backing up with one arm behind the headrest move, only to realize he put his hand behind HER HEAD instead lmao

Classic: HOMTETOWN CHA CHA CHA. 😂
FL loses her beloved (& new & fancy & expensive) heels to the hungry waves of the ocean. ML manages to retrieve one, but I guess only finds the second one much later. Then he leaves that one as a surprise for her in her shoe closet (+ some shenanigans ensues if I remember correctly). It was a whole overarching shoes plot! Plus: the shoes looked chic - but of course uncomfortable. 👀

I liked when she was faking she was too drunk to walk and he had to carry her and she lost one of her shoes and he didn't stop on purpose 😂

...and then when they co-propose, she frames hers by bringing him shoes.

Oh yes! BUSINESS PROPOSAL has a funny stumble & lose one heel on the pavement scene, when ML comes to the rescue, catches her from falling, then places the shoe back on her foot. 👏 This was right after their date in the restaurant, where her dress ripped because it was too small really when they bought it.

I’m not laughing. Or maybe I am 😂😂😂

It’s early, but how could I forget the scene of the same drama where FL lost her slide at work when stumbling, and it hilariously flew through the whole foyer before hitting ML on the head? Afterwards, he chased her through the whole building, but since she tried to conceal her identity she couldn’t allow him to catch her… but eventually he did. 😂😂😂

Now I really am laughing!

He also then bought her shoes and had them delivered to her office…after she showed up to their first real date at breakfast wearing mismatched shoes because she was so nervous, yes?

👀👏 Oh yes, that as well!
It’s now dawning on me, why I like this drama so very much: it’s sneakersily all about shoes! 😂

Joseon Attorney Ep. 7 — The ML wins a pair of flower shoes and gives them to the FL as a birthday gift, saying he hopes they will take her to better places as he puts them on her feet. Everyone thinks he should have opted for the cow prize instead. 🐮 😂

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale ep1. FL "lost" her shoe and went down the staircase towards the ML who found it. What happens next is...not as expected. 😅

I think 2 is every single drama with a "Cinderella" concept:
I Openly Dream of Cinderella
Cinderella at 2AM
BOF... etc.

I think it also happened in Devilish Joy and with the second leads of Serendipity Embrace... Tbh, it happens too often I get confused. If the ML drives a car there's at least one mandatory scene with him taking a random shirt/pair of shoes out of the trunk for the FL.

For #1... I think I only have seen FLs' with broken shoes. Sometimes, they "lose" the shoe because they throw it to the ML. But never have seen a "missing" shoe I think.

Random thought: this is a trope I would like to see reversed often.

I don't think kdramas are trying to make a social commentary on how shoes for women are designed to break easily or hurt us, so why not let the guy get hurt by (or lose) a new/wrong size shoe once in a while? I'm a sure our dear heroine would buy a pair of slippers for him.

Cinderella and the 4 knights- First episode is buying new shoes/ having the shoes thrown at people, the very last episode is returning the shoes and putting them on her feet.
As an added bonus, the shoes are actually PPL and she walks over ad brochures for them in her bare feet.

Cinderalla at 2am : She lost her shoe at the office in the stairs and the ML helped her with it.

Love Next Door : She threw her shoe at him and gave it her back. He gave her slippers when she decided to walk on Namsan moutain.

Celebrity : The shoes were not lost but it was pretty funny to watch the maid taking off the shoes of the ML when he was walking!

Re Celebrity - I was a horrified with that scene. I can't believe he has a maid whose job description includes that!

I remember several dramas where ML buys shoes but I'm not sure if they place them on FL's foot or not.
For instance: My Dearest, Shopping King Louis, Flower Boy Next Door, Bossam...

In Racket Boys one of our young couples is sitting on some rocks by the river and one of her sneakers falls into the water and he retrieves it.

The whole drama is cute but the scenes of those two were so tender...

I went back and checked Bossam, and ML bought the shoes but didn’t put them on FL’s feet. (Although he did examine her feet earlier when she had stepped on a thorn in her old shoes). Same with 100 Days My Prince — the crown prince-in-hiding bought flower shoes for the FL but she slipped her feet into them herself.

Thank you!

That's why I wasn't sure, because I remembered the scene where he examined her injure, but I couldn't say if he placed a shoe on her foot.

In "My Love From A Star" he has, as I recall, a sight of her drowning wearing her new glittery shoes. So he steals them to save her from the prophecy coming true.

Pinocchio featured something with shoes. I think the FL took off her shoes to hit guys who wronged her and the ML put them back on for her.

Did she also leave a shoe behind cause she was in a rush?

In Jealousy Incarnate /Don't Dare to Dream, 2ML goes down on the floor in front of the FL to measure her feet for shoes made to fit her uniquely. "Size Pyo Na-ri".

Castaway Diva has some really wholesome shoe scenes in the beginning episodes! 1 + 2 both apply somewhat, even though it's not the same pair of shoes!

(small spoiler) The young ML lets the young FL borrow his shoes when they are running away in the first episode. He promises to buy her a new pair someday (not spoiling further if he did haha)

Greatest Love! The female lead sells her shoes and the male lead ends up buying them and returning them to her. It's so adorable and sweet and I'm excited no one mentioned it yet so I can, lol

I am reminded of Korean superstition:

Giving footwear (shoes, slippers, boots) as a gift to your loved one is bad. Koreans believe that receiving shows as a gift will kill the relationship. The person in the relationship who receives the shoes will 'run away' from their significant other.

Lots of shows have scenes in which characters lose shoes or slippers in the street while being chased or while stumbling around in a daze (after being drugged or assaulted, having Alzheimer's, etc.). It usually happens at night, often in the rain. But can I think of specific examples? I think it happens in The Good Bad Mother and maybe Because This Is My First Life. There are lots more that I'm sure folks with better memories can cite.
