Yay No Gain No Love 💃

I'm just liking Love Next Door less and less. It kinda makes it worse when I see people gushing about it haha (yes, I know everyone has their own tastes and preferences and congrats to the actors for being in a successful drama)

NO GAIN NO LOVE is getting more love. It deserves even more than that.

GOOD PARTNER is a good drama- it deserves the love.

BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC has largely lost the romance except for Mari and Dojoon where we have seen a female character who, despite her impairment, has consistently stood up for herself and others. She has been a model of agency for the other abled people. On the other hand, when I look at this and other recent weekenders it has become obvious to me that the problem is not the writers, but the KBS executives who have demanded that makjang be forced into a genre that is not suited for it. There was little of it in FIVE CHILDREN or ONCE AGAIN. In any case we have only two episodes to go.

I am a little surprised that CINDERELLA AT 2 AM is not doing better.

I've gotta agree that there's something else going on with BMR besides what the writer might have decided--unless we've secretly gotten a different writer behind-the-scenes (A very weekender-y plot, that would be!).

The break for the Olympics didn't help them at all, but even before that the show had started to slip into--more than makjang (which can be really good!)--it's more like a histrionic nightmare.

All the small cable channels are competing for the lowest viewership ratings of the year and of all time. That's history in the making.

I don't understand why they chose the week-end spot.

Not that the ratings are bad, but I can't help but feel like Love Next Door is underperforming a bit considering all the promotion it got.

On the other hand, No Gain No Love seems to be doing great.

Good Partner is a hit, that's pretty obvious. Deservedly so, it's my favorite drama of the year so far.

Is NGNL showing that you don't have to air on the weekend to get decent ratings? I hope it is

Word of mouth is spreading in Korea about Bad Memory Eraser just possibly being the worst rom-com kdrama ever made in the Hallyu era, and curious viewers are rushing to their t.v. screens, resulting in skyrocketing ratings, from .3% to .5%

Love next door, DNA lover and Romance in the house have seen their numbers go up and down over the weeks. No gain, no love is consistently heading in the right direction, I hope that it can at least maintain its current numbers but ideally it would be great if it could keep climbing.

I think Queen of Tears was also a weekend drama that aired on Netflix (though I don't know what korean station it aired on) and for whatever complaints and flaws, it was still highly successful (I didn't watch it so I'm not sure on the specifics). Anywho, I think people were assuming Love Next Door would have a similar reception and it's not.

My question is why do you think the reception is so different when again, I think Queen of Tears also had complaints made about it.

This is speaking personally so i don't know if that applies to how Korean viewers feel, but Queen of Tears I think had a far more interesting setup. LND felt like Welcome to Samdal-ri and Dr. Slump combined. QoT also had the CLOY lineage going for it.

I had trouble getting through Welcome to Samdal-ri. I FF through the second half and was more interested in the storyline of the secondary couples. I got though half of Dr. Slump and then had no desire to continue. So I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I can't get through LND either! I wanted to watch a rom-com, not a melo!

I highly doubt anyone, including tvN, assumed Love Next Door would have a similar reception to Queen of Tears. Queen of Tears had Kim Soo-hyun and Park Ji-eun. No one involved with Love Next Door is half as popular as Kim Soo-hyun. Also, Korean viewers weren't the ones complaining about Queen of Tears. They've always liked family makjang dramas.

Even with qot it didn't get the complaints until the last few episodes when the writer added so much unnecessary plot lines. The first half was strong, and as the user below said it had a unique/interesting premise like the male cinderella type, ksh character is the type usually portrayed by fl's. The ost was bangers too, and so far love next door has forgettable ones. Even if qot got messy many stayed really for ksh and kjw, on the chemisty and acting front they really delivered.

Some people may be comparing these two shows because of the illness, but they're completely different.

From the title to the main story, there was no doubt QoT was a melo. And I never had a problem with the illness storyline. That's like, in episode 2? That's the whole plot? I watched the drama knowing what it was and I enjoyed it as such for the most part.

My problem with the show is that they focused on the unnecessary stuff (Eun delulu), instead of the growth of the characters and the development of their relationships.
But even with that complain, I think QoT still managed to make me care about the characters way better than LND.

The broken relationships between the main couple or between mother and daughter made sense, and I was invested in see them work things out. I also liked many characters like the aunt and the brother.

On the other hand, I have no idea why I should care about anyone in LND. And I feel like they just throw the illness storyline to make people be nicer to the FL, because there's no way her parents or future boyfriend would treat her even slightly well and with the minimum respect otherwise. 😂

In conclusion, I feel like there's no comparison here. Two completely different shows.

Thank you. That is such an accurate analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of QoT. It had some really memorable scenes and characters. A judicious use of the editor's scissors and a bit more focus on the OTP's relationship and we could have had a potential classic on hand. 😂

Imo, Queen of Tears had a positive reception since I felt early on it captured the hearts of the audience with the story of the main couple. The writer knew what her story's strength was and milked it until the end. Also Kim Soo Hyun is very popular and Kim Ji Won portrayed her character so well.
While for Love Next Door, I personally didnt click with the main couple at the same amount of time. They didnt have the *chemistry and magic* as KSH and KJW. And it lacked originality since it had scenes that felt too similar with other recent dramas that I just tuned out.

Good lift for No Gain No Love!
Sad that Perfect Family seems to be stuck but still has a loyal fan base.
Cinderella, DNA Lover and Bad Memory Eraser may have fared better with ratings if were aired on weekdays. Their weekend competitors are such goliaths in ratings.
