DNA Lover: Episodes 5-6

As our genuinely misguided geneticist pursues new evidence for destined DNA love, our hard-to-tie-down hero sets his sights on pursuing her. And the more we learn about his questionable tactics to win hearts, the more sense it makes that our sidelined second male lead is interjecting himself in the middle.

EPISODES 5-6

Whoa. Whose side are we supposed to be on here? The drama has me on my toes, wanting to like Yeon-woo, but not trusting him a single scintilla. We learn this week that he’s not just a man with a lot of dates, he’s one that manipulates feelings to make women fall in love.

When we ended last time, our hero was headed for So-jin’s face with pursed lips. But before he makes contact, she headbutts him and yells, “That’s how you get to know someone?!” She’d prefer to stick to her scientific experiments for getting acquainted, thankyouverymuch. And yet, later, she can’t help but to think fondly of his forward moves.

Kang-hoon is witness to the almost kiss, putting him on the defensive for his romantically naïve bestie since birth. He tells So-jin not to fall for every man that’s nice to her, and then tries to have a serious conversation with Yeon-woo about it. When Yeon-woo casually asserts that he’s curious about So-jin, and so he wants to pursue her, Kang-hoon asks, “Are you going to make her cry like all the others?” But Yeon-woo won’t be deterred.

And so, when So-jin is assaulted at work by a (genetically) disgruntled rich lady, Yeon-woo takes So-jin out to a noraebang, where he dominates the mic until she’s tapping her feet and becoming increasingly interested in him. (It’s also where Shindong and Leeteuk show up disguised as noraebang employees to give us a cameo performance by Super Junior’s sub-unit L.S.S.)

Determined to discover her DNA match, So-jin begins working on finding a telepathy gene. (*exhales profusely* Yeah, just go with it.) The idea is that whoever is fated for you may be able to pick up on mental signals you’re sending out, or you two might even be able to feel each other’s pain.

Evidence for this? Well, So-jin is allergic to pollen and while she’s suited up in the lab looking like she’s ready for a HAZMAT team, she starts to sneeze. And this happens to be just when Yeon-woo is at a flower shop picking out the prettiest petals he can find for her.

Needless to say, buying flowers as part of his seduction plan doesn’t go over well. But the fact that our heroine may have connected to him telepathically while he was buying them is much more up her alley in terms of a come on. Problems arise, though, because our hero is a seasoned game player, looking for ways to make her feel connected to him.

There’s a moment when they both say aloud what food they’re craving (“mandu guk!”) and then see it as evidence of their telepathy. This seems like a chintzy coincidence until we find out later that Yeon-woo had asked So-jin’s friend what her favorite food was. When it came time to say what he was craving, he took a shot and it worked (a.k.a., he duped her). But our unsuspecting heroine sees it as another sign of their cosmic connection.

Kang-hoon becomes increasingly worried about So-jin’s blossoming infatuation with Yeon-woo. He tells a colleague that Yeon-woo is a dangerous guy who “has a habit of making women fall in love with him but then, when he has a change of heart, he kicks them to the curb.” And once we learn that he’s manufacturing ways to feed So-jin’s romantic fantasy, it feels like “dangerous” is not an overstatement.

As a (not-even-a-little-scientific) experiment to test their telepathy, So-jin names two locales in the city and tells Yeon-woo to meet her at the one she’s thinking of. She’ll send him mental signals, so he knows which of the two places she’ll be at, and if he arrives at the correct one, then obviously they are oh-so-destined for each other.

To the show’s credit, they end up in different places. And, even better, Yeon-woo runs into Mi-eun and So-jin runs into Kang-hoon. But while our second leads seem happy, our leads are wishing they had run into each other instead.

We keep getting little clues to throw us off kilter and make us wonder who has telepathy with whom (if it exists at all). When Yeon-woo invites So-jin to a celestial show, where they’ll be able to see the planets in the night sky without a telescope, Mi-eun stumbles onto their campsite. She introduces herself as Yeon-woo’s ex-girlfriend and the two note they have a habit of running into each other by accident. At the same time, So-jin offhandedly mentions that she can feel Kang-hoon’s pain, since they grew up together.

Later, the idea is introduced that people with more memories together might have a stronger telepathic connection (which would explain our second leads showing up all the time). As Kang-hoon keeps reiterating to So-jin, she and Yeon-woo hardly know each other. So maybe telepathy has nothing to do with fated love?

As a last-ditch effort to “prove” their telepathy, Yeon-woo gets the notion to “pre-determine a coincidence.” That is, he has his friend follow So-jin and report her whereabouts so that Yeon-woo can end up in the same place as her and call it fate. And even though the friend loses her trail, Yeon-woo determines her location and arrives to meet her, where she exclaims that the telepathy finally worked. And then he asks her out on their first real date.

Ugh. No. Just no. I like the interactions between all four leads. But how are they going to redeem Yeon-woo from this kind of emotional manipulation? He’s lying and misleading her to get her to go out with him. This is the behavior of someone with no conscience, not a romantic lead I want to root for (even if he has Siwon’s face and charm).

And yet, it’s so early that I expect to have my (judgmental) opinions upended, since there have already been some interesting turns. I really like that the show increased the danger by making me not fully trust the man we’re supposed to be falling in love with. At the moment, we don’t know if Yeon-woo’s feelings are real or not. And we’re left to question his actions and feel confused about his intentions. And if that doesn’t put you in the heroine’s shoes and make you feel like you’re dating a player, I don’t know what mind games will.

Oh man, where do I start? First off, I can't tell if the show is in on the joke that the female lead is incredibly irrational when it comes to love I'm reminded of the quote from Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters: "Give me a wise man of science in love! No one beats him in folly." This not only isn't how genetics works, it isn't how science works. Your N =1 , girl. You can't generalize that. That is not research! STOP. I love how Yeon-woo continues to challenge her on this and point out that she's actually using this "science" to safeguard her heart rather than pursuing a real connection.

I'm also just really amused by how this drama is putting so much dramatic tension into this question of "can the leads read each other's minds?" Like I said, I think (hope?) they're approaching it to show us how irrational So-jin is, but taken at face value it's just funny. I also was disappointed that this drama is adding in a murder storyline. I don't think it has the gravitas to pull off much of anything serious, let alone that. I did like the surprise reveal of the priest's connection to Yeon-woo.

Speaking of the priest, how is this storyline going to go? They made me very invested in the lab worker's story. She needs love. She, obviously, can't be with a priest unless he leaves the priesthood. There is a webcomic I read that had that ending, so I guess it's possible, but as someone raised Catholic I don't love that. I guess it could be a healing love that ultimately ends with them apart but results in personal growth for her, like the Hot Priest in Fleabag, but that's not what I watch romance dramas for! Especially ones with this ridiculous of a premise.

I'm also wondering what's gonna happen with the 2FL and 2ML. The 2FL is polyamorous. 2ML is clearly not. Will the show let the 2FL stay polyamorous, or will it take the attitude that she just hasn't met the "right" guy yet?

One thing I will say is that this drama is incredibly entertaining. It's absolutely bonkers and ridiculous, but it does not bore me.

Based on the preview for ep 7, I do wonder if, or maybe hope that, this is ultimately going to lead towards the theme of a love as a choice, rather than fate. I would be very surprised by any Kdrama doing that, but we'll see.

I think the writer is in on the joke. I responded in a separate thread. I love this show.

I think the nerdy sidekick probably also has a tragic backstory, because she takes large amounts of anxiety pills, sleeps in a closet and had a scary flashback. But, don't you just love her? She is so unexpectedly sassy at times. And, the actress is so versatile. She was the secondary love interest in King the Land!

I love what the show has to say about polyamory. It isn't saying that it is wrong, just that there is a lot of baggage in all relationships and that having no expectations itself has expectations. And, that there are reasons for wanting to be monogamous, polyamorous/gamous, just dating or voluntarily celibate like our 2ML and our priest.

As I said below, I think SFL ended things with ML when he became a threat to her lifestyle, probably because she was getting too attached. So I don't see her changing.

I loved the Elizabeth Gaskell reference and cannot help but wonder if it is not exactly what inspired the show- because it so exactly describes our FL. And there is huge truth in it: The smartest people are capable of the greatest stupidities.

I actually buy the idea that our FL is a brilliant scientist but on this one point she is totally irrational.

Yes, her research would certainly not have satisfied Karl Popper's dictates for the proper conduct of science, but this is fantasy science not real science. Genetics, as described in the show, bears no relationship to real Genetics at all.

As for our second leads: I see our polyamorous lady simply deciding that she is tired of that life and simply choosing our 2ML- not because she has actually changed but because she now wants to live a different life. Whether or not that is a good idea in the long run is a question the show will likely leave unanswered.

I would prefer magic or the supernatural to this pseudo-science. At least it doesn't pretend to be real.

I love how the characters reveal the complicated motivations behind their behavior and are not simply mindless robots. When Kang-hoon scolds Yeon-woo to not mess with his Noona, it's not just because she is naive, but because she suffered through a lot and he can't stand to see her cry. To him her selfless desire to save a pregnant woman isn't a sign of strength, but a result of the hard life she had and the fearsome combo of lack of self-worth and hating seeing suffering in others ("forgetting her own pain). I said it last week, but this is what I came to love kdramas. Some of these writers just understand life.

Thanks for this week's summary @dramaddictally. It sounds like you are slowly falling in love with the show, but need more convincing. I have a different perspective on the DNA lover, romance thing. They are showing all the manipulations and all So-Jin's silliness not only because it is a comedy, but also, I believe they are parodying the coincidences and tropes of romcoms. This is not a OTP, first love, reuniting of childhood crushes. There is no coincidences in this drama despite what So-Jin believes. Real life is that there are intentions behind every day interactions and people who believe in telepathy are foolish.

This drama is very self aware. And, the writer seems to be playing around with narrative. To the point where FL's nerdy sidekick tells the show's critics that they don't take the time to understand what is going on and that it affects the plots of dramas. (I hope this mean they will continue to buck against the norm, but this also might be a sad foreshadowing that the end will not be as the writer intended)

I loved how meta that scene was. Yes, comment sections are often full of people passing judgement, unwilling to wait for the writer to develop their stories and characters.

Can anyone read the heart collage in the middle of Episode 5 @30:15? The dark squares change in the middle, but I can't figure out what it says.

my guess is that the telepathy stuff is really just similarly programmed neurons, and it can seem like there is telepathy with two people from similar environment. so friends with similar experience might have the same "program installed". But not necessarily memories together.
call it a hunch? people who do hiking or sailing often are able to predict where someone is. more like winning in a game of ladders, you just pick the correct one.

I found last week's two episodes interesting interesting enough to keep watching, and I also generously overlooked the artistic liberties on the subject of DNA. This week it was increasingly difficult with the telepathy nonsense, which drifted too far into parascience.
Above all, it makes me take FL less and less seriously.

Unfortunately, the interesting backstories have been somewhat forgotten. Nevertheless, this drama is surprisingly entertaining.

I'm going to come to the player's defence here: yes, Yeon-woo manipulates the *circumstances* to win a date with So-jin, but he doesn't manipulate her feelings.
We see him reading/listening to our resident relationship columnist's advice on how to date an otaku and trying to create those circumstances, but he is doing this because he has a sincere (to me) interest in her, and she refused to even try to get to know him before judging him unsuitable.

He works hard to woo So-Jin, but almost all of his plans don't work out anyway. I'll take that over the "fated since childhood" trope any day.

Of course, if he plays on So-jin's insecurities when they go on a date in the next episodes, I'll judge him.

I'm glad that they showed the prejudices Mi-Eun has to face because of her lifestyle, but Kang-hoon was way too rude to her when he doesn't know how she handles her dates.
From the conversation she has with Yeon-Woo, it's clear that she's open and talks about her lifestyle beforehand, so it was totally out of place to tell her that she's out to hurt people.

Frankly speaking, Yeon-Woo and Mi-Eun seem to be the only ones having adult (or at least age-appropriate) conversations in this drama. My guess is that she ghosted him because he was becoming a threat to her lifestyle.

I'm convinced that the "lurker in the dark" shadowing him is the other child we see in the family photo shown in Yeon-Woo's childhood flashback with Father Andrea's mother (was it?).

Yeah, I think Yeon-woo is navigating the relationship as best as he can. What I can't figure out though is if his interest in So-jin is like his usual 'flavor of the week' deal or if he actually is developing genuine feelings for her.

There could be some interesting trope bending coming up, but he likes her despite all the things that annoy him. In fact, he finds them cute. In fact, he fell so hard, he jumped off a building. Call an ambulance. He is cooked. *wink* IMO

I agree with you. He is interested in her. He finds her kookiness endearing. She is babbling on about some telepathy gene. She had made it clear that this is a make-or-break thing for her. He already has a black mark against him for his "cheating gene". He is just playing along trying to keep her interested.

I thought Shim Sr dead girlfriend was Fr Andrea's mom or maybe even Kang-hoon's mom and Fr Andrea might have multiple personalities and be a murderer.

I am so glad I did the 4 episode trial on this one! I was hooked by the 3rd episode, then 5 came along and man oh man! Super Junior cameos were hilarious and nostalgic. This is quite fun and very well acted. Siwon continues to climb up my I sure like him list. Jung In-sun seems perfect for this role too.
