Korea Times reported this week that young people are dramatically changing their spending patterns due to high housing costs and food expenses, including dining out, which account for an overwhelming proportion of their spending. An increasing number of young Koreans are shifting their spending habits toward frugality.

Over the past decade, the dominant trend has been the "YOLO" (You Only Live Once) lifestyle, where people prioritize immediate happiness over investing in an uncertain future. This trend has also been significantly influenced by the rise in single-person households. However, the spending party has come to an end, creating a new lifestyle of "YONO" (You Only Need One). It refers to a consumption pattern that involves reducing unnecessary spending.

For example, while there are still people who enjoy omakase (expensive Japanese-style chef-curated fine dining), people in their 20s became more like, 'I'd rather spend that on something else.' High inflation and low income growth rates have pushed young Koreans to spend only on essentials. Data from Statistics Korea show that from 2021 to 2023, the inflation rate stood at 2.5 percent, 5.1 percent, and 3.6 percent, respectively. During the same time, the annual salary increases were only 2.5 percent, 0.9 percent and 1.6 percent. The number of dining-out transactions for young people in their 20s and 30s decreased by 9 percent in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year. Consumption of convenience store foods has increased 21 percent.

There have always been spenders and savers. It is a habit or mindset learned at a very young age. Some people spend because it is an addiction (to feel good) or out of anger (to change something about their self.) It is one of the things not taught well in civics classes: the value of a dollar (or won), budgeting and the compound return on savings. It usually takes real world experience to learn valuable lessons on income and expenses.

I wonder if they looked at whether the number of young people opening or adding to savings accounts are rising even while their spending is decreasing.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!
One more week to go until my holidays starts!🥳

My workplace has been quieter since most colleagues are on leave in July. The downside, of course, is having at times no one to turn to as a newbie. I am proud of myself for being able to manage a lot on my own, but the chaos is slowly taking its toll.

However, I am not planning on sleeping my holidays away! There are friends and family to meet up with, the family pictures need to be organized, and I dug up my lists of books and movies. I am glad I channeled my earlier boredom into properly planning my holiday plans! 😂

NOTES FROM 9TAILEDVIXEN'S FINAL WEEK OF SABBATICAL:

(A) The End of Time Off

My workaholic patootie had trouble settling into my sabbatical and now I'm thinking about how nice it would be if I had another month or two off.

I haven't completed everything I set out to do this sabbatical but I did get the most important bit done - resting and getting my health back (though ironically I am headed back to work with a twisted knee and the tail-end of a cold).

It is what it is and perhaps I can take another sabbatical in 5 years' time. We will see what life brings.

(B) Netflix the Slowpoke

Netflix suddenly announced that it has LOVELY RUNNER available to view.

Really, Netflix? I had to take out a Viu subscription to watch it while it was on. You're late to the party!

(C) This Week in Korean Women's News

1. Roommates but not rivals: Two South Korean shooters win Olympic gold and silver

Two South Korean shooters with a special bond fought for gold without bitterness Sunday at Paris Olympics ' shooting range. Oh Ye Jin took the gold and Kim Yeji the silver in women’s 10-meter air pistol — and both beat the previous record — but said it didn’t much matter who won.

https://apnews.com/article/olympics-2024-shooting-75648e08a0c4d31eaf7c14f45e51cd44

2. South Korea bets on foreign housekeepers to ease women’s workloads and boost birth rate

The South Korean government will be bringing in Filipino housekeepers to help ease the domestic and childcare workloads of Korean women in the hopes of boosting the country's fertility rate.

Really, South Korean government? Your misogyny runs so deep that instead of addressing the misogyny, sexism, and violence against women in your culture which has triggered the 4B movement, you are importing female domestic labour which you will pay POORLY as a bandaid? Oh FFS!

But, wait, a twisted knee? I thought it was a twisted ankle (twice)? I was gonna say that it's been a while since you hurt your ankle, but it was the knee or is this a more recent event?

C.1. Aww. Happy for them.
C.2. Ew. This is crazy but I'm not really surprised.

Sigh... so:

1. My right ankle is fully recovered.

2. My left ankle is still slightly wonky but at least I'm not limping anymore. This one's taking ages to recover because it was twisted twice in a row.

3. My left knee got twisted last week while I was climbing the silks during Aerial Yoga - trying to maneuver my body placement and I had a crack. No, I don't have an ACL tear etc. It's painless but it's wobbly still. I can walk without limping so the doctor reckons it's just my ligaments being stretched a bit too far.

Sigh... I hate being chronically clumsy...

Required fields are marked *

Addendum: My Aerial Yoga teacher is sympathetic - she's had this happen to her while climbing the silks too but for her it was her hamstring. YIKES!

So Thursday's class saw me just climbing using one side instead of switching between left and right as the class does. Sigh...

Aigoo, that sounds exhausting. I hope you have a full recovery soon.

I have a sister that's clumsy too. She doesn't get hurt most of the time, but she breaks everything that touches her hands. It's difficult because it doesn't matter how careful she tries to be, it just happens. It's crazy. So I know that you're trying your best and I really hope nothing twists anymore.

OMG! Send my (pot) greetings to your sister (kettle) LMAO!

She sounds like she has the same type of clumsiness as RM from BTS. His is so chronic it has earned him the moniker of "God of Destruction" ROFL!

I do sometimes break things but not often. And it's just weird that after years of not twisting/spraining anything that I've had a run of twisting both ankles and my left knee.

I actually started doing Aerial Yoga for resistance training to strengthen my joints and limbs as well as gain back my flexibility etc. That is why I am continuing to attend Aerial Yoga classes (while wearing my ankle and knee guards). Hopefully my body will settle in and strengthen enough soon that there won't be anymore repeats.

2

It is that bad. Just last week I saw her break her mini fan! It was so ridiculous, I thought it was a joke. She barely touched it and it stopped working! I tried to turn it on and I couldn't, it was broken. Then she almost broke another thing and dropped a piece of mango while trying to feed me. It was chaos! When she tried to borrow something from me I was hesitant at first. LMAO

After nothing happening for years, everything started to happen now. Dang.
But it sounds like Aerial Yoga is a good solution in the long run. Let's hope it shows good results soon!

1

@enriquequierecagar OMO! That is definitely RM-level destruction capability!

I have phases - very occasionally, I'd have an entire week where I'm dropping and breaking stuff and then nothing happens for a long time and then suddenly I'm butterfingers again.

Not sure whether get one's body injured or getting one's bank account injured is worse...

Sigh... The Klutzy Life (TM)

1

She got a new laptop recently, so if you could only imagine the level of panic I feel when I saw her touching it after breaking the fan, hahaha. It's not even my wallet but it hurts.

However, health is the most important thing ever. So that one hurts too.
The Klutzy Life is hard indeed.
I send my hwaitings!

Happy Friday, Beanies! This week I spent mostly being sick, so my inspiration level is quite low, unfortunately. Not that it'll stop me)))

OUR SONG keeps feeding us well – 2 performances this week! First is duo remix of his widely beloved LBFAD OST “Looking for you” in collaboration with Chen Lijun, Yue opera singer (usually playing male roles there, ha!), singing in her comfort style. End result is very beautiful, I think. Not to mention how utterly happy he looks finally singing his own song with a partner there – after so many years it was his first time, previously only veteran singers did so, I believe. It's a wonder he didn't tear up like some people in the audience))) A bit more about Yue opera in general:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yue_opera

And actual performance (lol at her being like “I always thought I was quite tall... until I stood next to him!” behind the scenes) – hopefully they'll do 2nd round, I want to hear him trying opera too!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCJgac3jXj8

And the stage of menfolk trio “Big happiness, big sadness” rookie boyband of LYN, Mao Buyi and Da Zhangwei. Look, they even dance a little – hilariously, MBY is even worse at it than Yuning! As I expected, mutual trolling was very prevalent through all collaboration, idk what was funnier - DZW calling Yuning “every girl's dream” in his singer-mode and Yuning almost laughing his glasses off from embarrassment or two of them nicknaming MBY Mao Mao and keeping pestering him like annoying kids with real pet cat who's too nice to scratch them to stop it))) Still need to work on outfit coordination though - costuming in this season is a huge mess. Song is called “The flowery heart”. Did I mention that both Yuning's stages were the most popular that night and doing really well at charts?^^
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbC328KKYTU

Next two episodes will be dedicated to another team of singers, I believe, so no more stages for a while((( There are talks about him recording another show this month – the music one he was originally rumored for, I think. Ain't no rest for workaholic... Meanwhile, let's go back to season 3 and listen to another male trio – besties LYN and DZW once again, but with Silence Wang as 3rd member this time – harmonizing very nicely in “I don't like singing love songs”. I suppose it was before Yuning's “love guardian” fame because now he's like the last person to have any moral right to say that)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHM9p7Nf9VA

Can you guess what got this track into my archives despite rather questionable audio quality? Yep, that cute little ponytail is to blame – what can a girl do, I'm really easy sometimes))) Pity we likely won't see him with his real hair this long again anytime soon... Song is called “Tolerance” and it's another one from his emo covers repertoire:

Continuing An Ode To Ponytail theme – it's too adorable to resist! - is another sad love song “I surrender” (literal title means “Don't leave”), where he was WAY into it at times, both in terms of vocals and overall feelz. That... tends to happen, as you've probably already noticed. Purely sound-wise I like this one much more – or maybe that's just me being into pretty men desperately begging, hmmm^^
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kARkRaJqWkQ

Seriously, this look deserves everything! The ponytail, grandma glasses, separated sleeves – why tho? it's not like he was afraid of getting sunburn INDOORS lol – so peak babygirl of him. I need to find the full version of that stream, for science))) Somewhat fun – or at least a little less depressing – song this time, “White plum”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r7B4qNdya4

We also have a brand new OST – released mere hours ago! It's for his friend and HEROES (2022) costar Zeng Shunxi's new drama A LONELY HERO'S JOURNEY which is set to premier on 6th. Titled “Lonely boat” oh, I know this character, it's from NYZ's name! and sounds... pretty much how you'd expect a Republican spy drama soundtrack to sound – full of doomed pathos, but in a good way, since it's him singing it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUegO5k2WnE

Bonus: in case if you ever wondered what does he do to always sound so stable no matter what. Actually I'm sure it's his usual BS again and he trained himself for real with other methods, but it's funny to look at nonetheless. Also, why the hell he is so good at this with his endless limbs he normally trips over? It makes no sense!

I wonder what sort of a contract—or no contract?? — the show producers have with Spotify and the music, because the platform has all of the music covers they did for Season 2, and then they stopped 😔 And we’re now in Season 6

3

@bebeswtz I bet politics have something to do with that...

C-artists and Spotify is such a complicated case, honestly. Few months ago I had 10+ songs from my playlist there suddenly pulled out with no explanation - all from different artists and seemingly unrelated labels, afaik. Sometimes also it takes ages for a song to appear there, again for no obvious reason... LYN himself has 2 accs there - one is old and likely abandoned with only a few his old singles there. And all his intl-collabs are listed under other artists with no proper links to himself, plus geo-locked for me at least. A whole mess.

2

The whole industry calls Mao Bu Yi Mao Mao—it isn’t a nicknamed made up by them just on the show— and I find that so endearing 🥹 Then again— and this is probably because I’m a native speaker— I’ve always wondered why he chose the stage name, “Mao Bu Yi”, because other than calling him Mao Mao, any other way of calling him when he has that stage name just sounds odd 🤣 Maybe the name has special meaning to him 🤔 The specific characters for the name 不易 literally means “not easy”, and maybe this stage name is an ode to his music career and how uneasy it’s been 🥺

How are you find the show overall? Are you watching with subs? And if yes, where, if I may ask? I know someone who’s desperately trying to find it with subs but the official episodes on YT are not subbed

He does resemble a "I just want to chill, leave me alone" cat, but still, sooo cute! I thought they invented this because usually Yuning isn't that informal with his seniors, at least openly... Guess Mao Mao is of an easy going feline breed))) That stage name tho lol. He's really a quiet troll to choose it and never explain to anyone WHY...

No, I'm still waiting for subs, but that doesn't stop me from watching episodes in full on YT without them((( Kind people on twt translate bits of it related to Yuning and I was able to discern some myself intuitively, but that's not the same, ofc *sigh* Wasn't there around for previous seasons so idk how long it takes for official translations to get done...

I like the new rotating partners concept and more relaxed atmosphere now that everyone has equal status. But I feel like stages aren't prepared that well anymore? I mean, they used to give artists few days to choose tracks, rehearse, coordinate styles etc, but now they do everything within the same recording day, borderline impromptu. In theory this is interesting too, but takes away the feeling of grandness, you know. Mismatched fashion in particular just drives me nuts - and I thought it was already bad enough in Seasons 1 and 3...

Still waiting for MLTR guys to be enlightened with the fact that LYN is their brother in metal. They're gonna get their minds blown once they hear his non-pop vocals, ha!

Mao Mao is soooooooooooo incredibly introverted, I sometimes wonder why he chose to continue to stay in showbiz (difficulties with his debuting agency, notwithstanding) and not go back to his previous job (nursing). Maybe he discovered his love for singing only after he started it.

Oh, that makes sense! I also follow an account on Twitter that focuses on and translates LYN content— I wonder if it’s the same account 😆

I like the new format, too! The show has changed and rotated up it’s format so many times all these years after Season 1, but I think this is the first time that I’m actually not mad at it and don’t think that it’s gimmicky— it actually works!! I agree that these initial stage performances weren’t that well prepared, but I think that is an issue with how Episodes 1 & 2 were filmed— a.k.a. Back-to-back within a (what seems to be) 48-hour timeline 😬 So I think the main concern for the first 2 episodes is just the physical conditions of the singers and everything else—if they can prepare it in time— is just a bonus. It explains the bare bones of the stages. I think as the season progresses, then the artists will be given more time to prepare and all the clothing sponsors will be able to get things ready in a less crazy timeline.

LOL As you say, being the rocker that he is, I’m sure LYN is already excited to potentially be able to work with MLTR, and hopefully the latter can and will see that. Speaking of MLTR, I love how humble they are and how so ready they are to just learn from this whole experience and to really treat this as an exchange of music and ideas and not like a competition. I have how they already leveled the playing field and said, “Hey, it’s okay, English isn’t our first language either” as a way to clear the air and lessen the pressure put on the real-time translators they have for them in their earpiece whenever they’re not performing

He's in good hands this time at least - cannot imagine someone like Mao Mao having to deal with a bunch of no-mouth-filtered youngsters like in previous seasons. Maybe that's why he agreed to do it - because it's only people he already knows and can tolerate would be round?

There are few accounts I check out for translations/news - fandoestrans, Bigsislilred, meruryn etc. Plus few other translators on tumblr, currently having a summer break, I think. Overall just scrolling through his tag on Sunday/Monday does the trick too. If we never get official subs for some reason, hopefully one of them will pick up this grand project too.

Yes, first episodes filming was a mess, plus he was still rather sick and probably wanted to wrap it up as quickly as possible. Following recording isn't listed in his August schedule, which makes me wonder if he's gonna skip a round or they just didn't decide on a date yet. Right, sponsorship! His jewelry brand is so not going to miss this opportunity for sure, man's about to flaunt all their VVIP catalogue)))

Perhaps because they're Danish? From what I've seen, artists from Scandinavia are generally rather... laid back and display very little celeb arrogance. And they also worked for c-market previously, tho I didn't understand fully how it was done when they clearly don't speak much Mandarin... Anyway, LYN himself somehow managed to land few international collabs despite his English being very limited, so hopefully it'll all work out successfully.

Also, I’m still miffed that TO THIS DAY, no one has ever given the opportunity for Mao Mao and Liu Yu Ning to do a ballad duet together 😱 They once did a duet together for a New Year show (I don’t remember if it was for New Years or Lunar New Year) and they had the duo perform a pop song 😑 Total missed opportunity!

It was a regular New Year on Dec31 and cnetz were collectively hella amused at having them perform together, calling it "when drama wedding meets funeral"))) Wouldn't be surprised if they end up asked to do it again in the future as well, overall reception was great.

P.S. They both were even dressed appropriately for a gut-wrenching ballad this time, but alas!

2

Another oh so informative post! I didn't know what Yue Opera was, or even a name for style of singing. To my ear, it always sounded somewhat Native American (OK, I know that's odd, but there are hundreds of Native American languages and sometimes they are nasal). This particular LBFAD performance with Chen Lijun is a tour de force of two styles separated by so many decades of change, yet it works beautifully. All that street singing, LYN knows how to use his voice to great advantage and it shows on stage. Thank you so much for this story!

In other LYN news, now that I am armed with Dramawiki by virtue of last week's discussion on dubbing, I caught the first six episodes of A JOURNEY TO LOVE and bailed. 2024 is not my year to drive myself into a pity hole, and I'm still in recovery from NIRVANA IN FIRE. But! I watched enough to see that LYN has a way with the camera and with the right director, the right script and the right costars, he can easily carry a drama. So, an ascendant talent and very much worth your time.

I didn't know beforehand either, so it was informative for me too. We have nothing here resembling Chinese opera, but Korean pansori is somewhat similar to folk music of our mountain tribe and I've always found it quite funny.

AJTL is soul-crushing indeed, but mostly in last 6 episodes. Tho if you don't dare to invest in all previous 34 which are still relatively safe in tragedy aspect, at least check out epic desert battle in Ep8, I think - it's a great peace of action cinema, one of most iconic drama moments of 2023 overall. Unfortunately, there aren't many of non-tragic roles in his filmography, we keep waiting for statistics to improve a little)))

P.S. I'm working on that self-dubbing actors list, but it'll take a few more days because new names keep popping out, ha!

One thing I forgot to say. With decades of film watching under my belt, I am of the belief that you can't teach an actor how to use the camera. They either have this gift or they don't. The ones that have it break down the wall between the artist and the audience. LYN does that. It's pretty rare.

On your recommendation, I won't dispense with AJTL permanently. I know it's a worthy drama. But it's going to have to stay suspended until 2025. And, maybe by that time it will become more accessible (I was watching on Youtube) and/or there will be other LYN dramas available (to soften the blow).

Agree, it's obvious to me too that camera loves him a lot. It was noticeable even in his early, very raw skill-wise roles.

We should get at least one (2 if we're lucky and 3 in case a real miracle happens) more this year, tho not sure regarding availability beforehand. Hopefully his currently filming show - from the same studio/platform as with AJTL - won't repeat their past mistakes with global distribution this time around.

K-dramas have affected my brain. While planning dream trip to Japan, I keep wanting to stay in Korea town. I find myself looking for Korean restaurants nearby instead of udon and ramen. Okonomiyaki what? All I want is a garlic chive packed extravaganza pancake. There are many things I love about Japan but Korean food is what calls to my stomach.
K-dramas have affected my brain. While planning dream bicycle trip in Japan, I keep looking at the street view images of the route, beautiful but also looks like the perfect place to commit a crime if I were a serial killer in a K-drama (you know, winding country road with few street lights) K-drama, you've ruined my solo girl travel style completely.

I just watched the Netflix Korean/international film 'Wonderland'. I'm split on the film.
A high concept sci-fi packed with more stars than a 1970 Irwin Allen disaster movie. Gong Yoo, Park Bogum, Suzy, Tang Wei, Jung Yumi, Choi Woo-shik. Everyone did an excellent job and the script was pretty solid but, still, a part of me wished it was instead a 'drama special' with a lower budget and lower raking actors. I guess my one complaint was my mind kept being distracted by 'Hey, that Bogum and Suzy!' The star power was out of proportion to the story.
