Kim Se-jung, Lee Jong-won give toast to ENA’s Drunk Romance

Clockwise: Kim Se-jung, Lee Jong-won, Baek Sung-cheol, Shin Do-hyun

ENA announced that Drunk Romance (roughly translated) has been penciled into the autumn schedule, lining up Kim Se-jung (The Uncanny Counter 2: Counter Punch), Lee Jong-won (Bad Memory Eraser), Shin Do-hyun (Doom at Your Service), and Baek Sung-chul (Tell Me That You Love Me) to headline the rom-com.

As our central heroine, Kim Se-jung plays the super passionate Chae Yong-joo who is heralded as the reigning queen of sales in her job at a large liquor company. Boasting steel-like physicality in addition to great willpower, Yong-joo was once on the special forces and is said to be like a refreshing lager – battling challenges with her uniquely cheerful charm. But her training has also made it second nature to prioritize her work, sweeping any conflicting feelings under the rug and out of sight. That is, until she meets our opposites-attract hero who seems to understand Yong-joo’s heart better than her.

Enter Lee Jong-won in the role of Yoon Min-joo, a brewmaster and local brewery CEO who has been making waves in the liquor industry. As an empath, Min-joo is described as super sensitive and perceptive to the nuances in people’s emotions as if tasting a complex ale. To protect himself from getting overly invested, though, Min-joo keeps boundaries by living in a secluded village where he can concentrate his time on crafting beers undisturbed. Of course, those boundary gates will soon be unlocked for a special someone named Yong-joo.

Rounding out our main foursome in the second lead roles, Shin Do-hyun plays the ambitious and pragmatic Bang Ah-reum. Ah-reum used to work at Min-joo’s brewery but left to join the corporate leagues and is now rivals with Yong-joo, working in product development for a competitor company. Baek Sung-chul, on the other hand, takes on the part of Yong-joo’s best friend Oh Chan-hwi. As a free-spirited soul, the restless Chan-hwi likes to roam about the country, driving his food truck to different locations and selling toast sandwiches to customers.

On the production side, PD Park Sun-ho (Greasy Melo) is at the helm, reuniting with Kim Se-jung after Business Proposal. Along with scripts penned by Lee Jung-shin, ENA’s Drunk Romance is slated to premiere this coming November, broadcasting in the Monday-Tuesday slot.

"her job at a large liquor company"

Because there's no reason for a liquor company in S. K. to be small?

Our Male Lead represents the small companies- and that will probably be a source of friction and conflict.

That's my concern, too - the cast sounds great but the potential for excessive drinking scenes makes me skeptical. I'd happily tolerate all the beer PPL they can stuff in in exchange for avoiding Dr. Slump-style drunkenness.

I am hoping drinks PPL can be done through their work environment so we don't need to see them doing drunk scene. I am hoping they use the male lead’s approach from the drama Drinking solo he enjoyed a drink with a meal but never wanted to be over the limit and thus avoided all the negative consequences.

The title alone is a deal breaker. Unfortunately this will be the second post KNIGHT FLOWER (one of my 2024 favorites) Lee Jong-won dramas I will be passing on. My quotient for kdrama ‘drunk’ scenes has been already exceeded and my antennae are already warning me.

On the other hand a couple of months ago I thoroughly enjoyed Lee Jong-won’s mini-series from 2019: OUR BASEBALL (10 fifteen min eps) (available as a playlist on Youtube). That will have to be my LJW fix for awhile.
