[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Meaningful overnight trips with friends

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Meaningful overnight trips with friends

Your mission:

This week your mission is simple: find all the fun, rambunctious, meaning-filled scenes where groups of friends embark on an overnight stay. This could be a trip to the beach, chock-full of sand, sun, and cars rolling into the sea (hi, Lovely Runner!) or any meaningful overnight excursion that puts friendship first.

Thanks @aicaramba for this treasure hunt idea!

Reference drama:

Lovely Runner (Episode 12)

25-21 : When the ML realized they had no idea about making fire, washing vegetables or making food in general 😅

Nevertheless, episode 7.

Wouldn't call it so much "fun," although there was an amusement park involved. It was more tense and full of strange expectations. An incredibly memorable episode. Lots of relationships on the line.

The one in Welcome to Samdal-ri didn't start off with the intention of being a friend trip, but when Samdal's two assistants showed up it in episode 14 it became one! It was super cute to see how much they liked and admired her, especially given all she'd been through up to that point.

Didn't they disrupt what should have been a romantic date?

This is the right of passage for teens to adulthood generally. There are so many but I will mention the ones I remember top of head - 2521 - beach trip, Lovely Runner - beach trip and Our Beloved Summer ep8 - mountain retreat.

This had me hunting through the recaps

Sacred Divorce episode 9. A romantic getaway turns into a timeout with friends.

Hospital Playlist 2 episode 6. I might be wrong on the episode number. All 5 friends embarked on this trip but only Seok-hyung and Joon-wan made it to the guesthouse. That's where we learn that Joon-wan is taking over Seok-hyung's persona as bear and took it up a notch to polar bear.

I think we had this in 20th Century Boy and Girl with our trio girlfriends. But I can't remember the episode number.

My Sweet Mobster (I think that's the title)

Cafe Minamdang (I think; I vaguely remember everyone ending up at some location and then I think they had to spend the night where some meaningful conversations may have happened. I don't remember)

Hero (now that's a throwback haha. I'm surprised this came to mind). The crew went on a retreat which was suppose to help them become better journalists & reporters.

The team-building trip in Coffee Prince (where they get in the water), was that an overnighter?

This is one of my favorite tropes.

In Age of Youth 2 there are two of these excursions (the first one was very funny, with the girls having to spend the night in a "dangerous" house. And the second one was a stay in the countryside, picking fruits).

In Go Back Couple all the friends go to the beach. There is a beautiful sequence between ML and FL there.

In Secret Garden the main characters go to a rural house or hotel, if I'm not mistaken.

In At a distancia, spring is green, some of the students and teachers go to a hotel.

I clicked wanting to see if anyone else is already cackling about that first AGE OF YOUTH 2 trip! Even though it was involuntary and a little bit “out of the ordinary”, I loved it so much. 😂🫰👏
Even how they got there: perfection. That whole first episode is a winner.

“Here, have this coffee!” 😂😂😂

I clicked on this Treasure Hunt expecting the reference to be Serendipity's Embrace Ep.5 as its overnight trip with our four high school friends was the most recent example, so since nobody has said it yet, I'll say it.

I think my favourite one of these is in ' Cinderella and the Four Knights" where everyone goes off to the holiday house, and Mr Smexytary gets drunk and finally uses banmal. There are office retreats in ' Whats wrong with Secretary Kim" and "Marry my Husband", but while both have friendship interactions, its not much.

“Mr. Smexytary”. 😂👏 I’ve never watched “Cinderella and the 4 Kings”, but you’re really selling it to me right now!

Mr Smexytary was one of the best things about the show :) I did love the show, but I think most people found it mediocre. I think when I watched it, it was a perfect show for me, and so it was easy to forgive its imperfections.

It was mediocre and I also watched the whole thing and enjoyed it! It was very early in my k-drama watching, I think that's why.

"meaningful" school trip...then Dr Cha for sure.

That school trip got her pregnant, broke up the golden couple, got her married and changed the trajectory of her promising medical career as she became a stay-home mom

I think there are two friendly overnights in King the Land? Is that right? Isn't there a work retreat AND a fun trip abroad? I feel like there are a few subcategories of these trips, because there are always bonding trips with work, school, and university club friends, and there are also non-romantic trips with the main leads where they re-enact It Happened One Night. (<==1934 Hollywood movie in which the couple gets stranded together in the country.)
