Drama viewership ratings for the week of August 19-25, 2024

Both Your Honor and Black Out see a nice bump this week, and Love Next Door seems to hit some traction as well, reaching 6.6% this week. Good Partner is still keeping those high numbers, though there’s a slight dip from last week.

We’re at another interesting moment where the weekend schedule is beyond packed, and the ratings are literally all over the place, with the big networks, big cable channels, and the smaller niche cable channels all in the running at this point. Also playing in the ratings game is the fact that some of the smaller channel shows (like Cinderella at 2AM) are broadcasting and streaming simultaneously. So, the numbers in that sort of scenario seem a bit inaccurate when it comes to depicting a drama’s draw.

I can't tell if Korea likes Love Next Door or not. Lowest and highest ratings all in one week.

Korea does like Your Honor whose ratings have increased episode after episode.

Koreans gave a mix review for this drama.

I think Saturday is lower because there is more competition. And 6.6% for episode 4 isn't bad at all.

Beauty and Mr. Romantic finally made into 20% rating mark with 42nd episode. What a relief for this weekender.

While BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC has at least become interesting again- hence the rise in ratings- there is still too much Makjang and not enough sweet romance to balance it out. So, I do not expect ratings to rise much further, particularly given the sheer number of weekend shows. Why would any more people want to watch a show with yet another awful mother and a nasty 2ML in any case?

I am frankly glad to see the low ratings for BAD MEMORY ERASER. It gives me some confidence in the Korean audience to distinguish quality from not.

I am curious to see if ratings eventually improve for DNA Lover- the first episode was a genuine mess but in fact this show has some very engaging characters and deserves a second look.

GOOD PARTNER deserves the love- in fact it deserves even more love.

Thats very plausible. I have not seen the drama and very likely to since I like the other weekend dramas better.

I guess I am in the minority that likes Bad Memory Eraser. So sad to see less than 1% ratings.

Even after reading the article, I was not prepared for how many shows are airing on Saturdays. My goodness.

When was a weekend this chock-full of dramas. 😂 I think defending on their choice everyone can find at least one drama they like. It's good to have a problem of plenty.

Culturally what changed in Korea that has stopped people from watching dramas on the weekdays? I thought their work hours got shorter. It’s not even like they are watching it online for weekday dramas because everything from ranking to buzz for online platforms is dominated by weekend dramas. The only exception this year has been Marry My Husband which might have done even better in the weekend slot. I don’t get it. What changed?

The biggest change is viewing habits which are not just in SK. People consume their entertainment through traditional TV, cable, radio, music but now more spend hours daily on social media, streaming platforms and YouTube for content.

Weekend viewing in SK was a family tradition therefore there were many "family" oriented weekenders.

genuinelly surprised by Cinderella rating, but seems like the only rom-com having above 1% ratings are the one heavily promoted, uhm?

They are aired on more well-known cable channels. TvN and JTBC are big names in Korea.

More money, more popularity (at times) and higher ratings.

FYI, the 3 major networks (KBS, SBS, MBC) have full market penetration. Cable channels (like JTBC, TvN) have less audience and small channels (Channel A, Chosun, ENA) are on less distribution systems. I have found if you want to compare the "popularity" of a show based on potential viewer numbers, the networks stay the same, the cable channels multiply by 2, and the small channels by 3.

i think I'll use those parameters from now on. I was checking on kinolights and it is somehow consistent with the number of viewers on OTT platforms reported there.

I think love next door is the best ongoing drama but unsurprisingly korean people don't have the taste to get high it...
