Descending into inferno with The Judge from Hell Park Shin-hye

The gates to SBS’s upcoming action-fantasy The Judge from Hell have opened, heralding the arrival of the underworld judge Park Shin-hye (Doctor Slump) with an intriguing teaser. Crossing into the world of the living, she will drag the unrepentant murderers who do not deserve to remain in the mortal realm all the way down into the depths of the underworld.

“Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch’intrate,” reads the inscription above the gate of Hell, akin to that in Dante Alighieri’s poem Divine Comedy. Abandon all hope, ye who enter. Condemned souls writhe in a tormented agony, melded irrevocably into the imposing structure. Watching with eyes that glow an ominous red is Lady Justice, sword and scales in hand, as if scrutinizing all who pass through.

Light shines through the cracks in a reversed cross, as the doors swing open to let the titular judge Kang Bit-na (Park Shin-hye) through. Brambles of crimson roses unfurl eerie eyes at their centers, and a serpent coils around an obelisk that crackles with a shimmering purple mist in Bit-na’s grasp. Inlaid within is an eye that glows the same violet as Bit-na’s when she next opens them. With a deviously cryptic smile, Bit-na croons: “Welcome to my world. To Hell.”

She’ll be joined by Kim Jae-young (Love in Contract) as Han Da-on, a violent crimes detective whose affable demeanor belies a sharp mind, exceptional observation skills, and a pain that he hides deep within. Rounding out the main cast, Kim Ah-young (Miss Night and Day) steps into the shoes of the demoted devil Lee Ah-rong, while Kim In-kwon (Parasyte: The Grey) assists Bit-na as the devil Gu Man-do, who goes undercover as a police officer in the courtroom.

Helmed by filmmaker Park Jin-pyo (Brave Citizen, Love Forecast), with scripts penned by Jo Yi-soo, The Judge from Hell is slated to premiere on September 21.

THE judge from hell? I thought there was more specific name for that. Maybe... The devil? Wait— the devil judge??? 😮

I can't believe with that title they missed the chance to cast Kim Min Jung and give her character the very needed revenge we'll been waiting for!
Joke.

Those pics give Hotel del Luna vibes. I hope this one doesn't have a self righteous ML, tho.

It's good that Park Shin-hye is trying new genre/role. But I can't see her as an intimidating devil. This will be one of those dramas I wait for beanie feedback before I start!

She exceeded my (rather low) expectations in Dr. Slump, so I'm open to giving this show a chance.

I'm interested to see how they depict hell this time around and I do think she (Park Shin-hye) can change up to play a different sort of character so hears rooting for this one to be good and entertaining.

For some reason I'm drawn to shows featuring the different contructs & rules of an alternate world and especially the characters who inhabit them. So far we've seen Gods ('Gobin: The great and lonely God', 'A Man Called God', 'Heavenly Idol') and angels of course ('Angels Last Mission: Love') as well as some horrific impressions of Hades (in 'Hellbound'). 'Hotel del Luna' depicted a place in between death and the afterlife, serving as a departure Hotel for souls seeking to finish one last task before leaving for their fate in afterworld. So now I'm defiitely intrigued by the story of a 'She-Devil Boss' and hoping to see Park Shin-hye heat up her image with some bad-assiness. She was strong in the movie "The Call' so we'll see. Don't know much about scriptwriter Jo I-su except credits for "The Hymn of Death". Hope the ending is more uplifting than that one. Looking forward to something different in this drama.

Park So-dam was really powerful as Death in Death's Game. I'm not getting even an ounce of that powerful aura and ease of command in Park Shin-hye. Let's see.

Rumor has it Shin Sung Rok has a cameo in a 2024 SBS drama. Initially thought it will be in Good Partner but now it's seems cameo-ing in The Judge from Hell is more plausible. Plus the voiceover at the beginning does sound like SSR, so I hope he really does have a cameo in this drama.
