[Cast Away] Noona romance powered by AI — or is it?

Don’t you just hate it when you’re short a few million dollars to produce a drama with your dream team of actors, writers, and directors? *pouts* Well, we found a way to scratch that itch!

In the Dramabeans community series Cast Away, Beanies can advocate for their chosen actors and creatives in imaginary roles.

How it works: We share a [very] hypothetical K-drama plot with you, and in the comments, you discuss who you think is the perfect cast to play the roles in this imaginary show.

This week’s K-drama plot: noona romance with hidden identity

After realizing that she’s stupidly falling for her AI “boyfriend” chatbot, a woman in her late 30s unsubscribes from the service to look for love in the real world. Based on what she liked about her AI boyfriend, she narrows down her ideal man to someone who’s a good listener and mature like her age.

The young barista at her usual coffee shop becomes witness to her string of disastrous blind dates with overgrown man-children. All of which ends with the barista and her (sans the date) laughing over what went wrong with each.

Meanwhile, he’s under the impression that she’s into older guys. He doesn’t know how to tell her that the AI company is fake, the “bots” are just part-timers, and he’s actually the one who’s been chatting with her all along. Can he spill the truth before one of her blind dates actually ends up sweeping her off her feet?

It feels like ages since we’ve had a proper noona romance. Let’s do some imaginary casting, shall we?

Who’s your vote for the noona who’s trying her bestest to be practical about love, only to be repeatedly disappointed by the universe because she’s blind to the signs.

Who will play the barista who’s always messing up someone’s order because he’s too busy trying to eavesdrop on his noona’s date?

And do we all agree that we need Yoon Park to cameo as one of the funny, but terrible blind dates?

If you have a plotline idea for future Cast Away posts, leave it in the comments. We’ll do our best to serve a fun twist on it.

Somebody make this plot happen!! Pronto!!

Seriously. The show writes itself. It just needs one more hurdle between our leads and then it'll be like 2024's "Shop around the Corner" and/or "You've Got Mail." Ooh, let's add some Romeo and Juliet--turns out both of their chaebol fathers hate one another or something...or we could add some Call It Love: their mothers are connected-as-hated-rivals because one of them stole the other's husband.

HEAs all around, though.

Haha!! No, I'm here to make this show happen!!! Without at least one more piece of "stage business," the plot Mary suggests wouldn't fill four episodes, much less 12 or 16!!! Tell me what else you'd like to see our characters do besides misunderstand one another in a coffee shop 😎🤣!!

I know you can dig deep into your K-drama knowledge and remember your favorite side plots. I've been watching a lot of old-school dramas recently, and have noted that they tend to have two or three full-and-complete storylines (when they're good) to make all 16 hours count.

Would you introduce a second couple?? There needn't be any murder or mayhem!

🤣

Well, for one thing, we can make it ten 45-minute episodes like the Freaking Fairytale.

Secondly, I'm relying a lot on the hot ahjussis to bring in hilarious wacky comedy to fill the minutes!

Thirdly, I kinda have something in the back of my mind, something like every ahjussi unintentionally bringing in a mystery, which then our two leads get to solve because of their circumstancial knowledge. Hers maybe from her job or I don't know, her father being a cop, something, and his from that ridiculous fake bot company (which can in turn lead to him showing his hand to her).

Hmmm I'm starting to like this show a lot! Ten 45-minutes might be too little even! When is it airing again??

7

Cameo dates!! Oh so much fun.
And then time for organic relationship building. Make it 12 episodes.
We can always add secondary leads who are equally fun.
A quirky family of hers.

5

OMG...Hot-Ahjussi-dramas of the week??? Like in case-of-the-week police procedurals???

I'm so in. I'm laughing just thinking about it. Can one of them be the stumbling ahjussi who can't ever find his phone and the whole plot revolves around him bumming phones off of other people and accidentally texting "I love you" or other inappropriate messages on the borrowed phones?

9

@midnight @attiton
Yoon Kye-sang Can be the chaotic Ahjushi who can’t find his phone.
He can be the character from Kidnapping day!

We can have characters from other dramas crossing over to this drama. So much meta and chaos!!

Have any of you two read Tales of the Black Widowers by Asimov? That is what jumped in my mind the minute I thought about weekly guest cameos.

YES! The thought of Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook mixing up their date dates and turning up at the same time and having an all out quarrel in the cafe is sending me into hysterics! I'm now trying to think of the mystery these two bring... Must be the most childish petty mystery in the universe!

8

@mayhemf Again, you and I thinking in the same line! 😂

Shop Around the Corner/You've Got Mail is maybe the story I want to see adapted into a kdrama the most, so I would love if they made this show and it leaned in that direction!

THe drama needs a kidnapper and serial killer that is only heard about from news and maybe friends of friends in the first 6-7 episodes, whereafter he pops up as the next blind date, conventionally attractive and polite on the surface but giving off a constant aura of wrong.
The OTP will have to take turns saving each other before this ends.
I actually think PHS would be able to nail that, but it breaks my heart just thinking of him as the bad guy. It could be Jang Hyuk, but that would completely derail the drama and it would become about falling in love with your murderer-in-spe. Actually, I think the most interesting would be to cast one of those beauties I love and who have said they would like to try to play a bad person for once ... and it would be so hard to watch 😢 Like, Kim Soo-hyun. Byeon Woo-seok. Seo in Guk.
For the main couple ... the ML should be young, idk ... is Choi-with-that-smile Jong-hyeop young enough? One of his best assets are the lines that are so visible when he smiles, and if they pumped him up with botox to make him look 20, that would be ruined.
And Moon Woo-jin is definitely too young. Who can play "very young but not actually a child"?

I also thought Lee Jong Won would be perfect for the role of the hot barista (because of My unfamiliar family, I guess).

And for the FL I'd choose Park So Jin (Shooting Stars, Alchemy of Souls, Bora Deborah...).

The blind dates would be very funny, with lots of cameos.

Cameos and cross-overs! All those chaeboys that have been forced on blind dates through billions of dramas,
like the Cinde-Freaking-rella Prince, and not least Gong Yoo as the Coffee Chaebol! Elegantly blind dating the FL while ambiguously smiling at the bartender!

I second this! So Jin! I would also like to see him with Go A Ra, tho.

For the blind dates we should get some mama boys like Choi Daniel's character in Romance in the House, hahaha. Or extra Joon in Lobster!

JUNG SO MIN is looking for love in all the wrong places. Her AI bot, Theodore, is a corny, cliche riddled wreck but compliments everything she says - - which is her only self-esteem boost in her boring office work life.

CHAE JONG HYEOP was a NEET kid living in his parents basement until they kicked him out when they sold the building to a developer. CHAE, being shy, anti-social and awkward, found that social media gave him anonymous cover to protect his fragile ego. He started with freelance customer service work (which he hated). Broke, he wanders into a coffee shop run by HAN DO GWON who received the his wife’s failing business in their divorce settlement. He needs help. CHAE needs money. He becomes a trainee at minimum wage despite the fact coffee smells make him sick and he is awkward around people. It is fine because there are so few customers CHAE has time to surf the web for other work. He finds an ad for an AI dating company that scans his face for an avatar. But after being paid, he is told he could make more money being a real time bot. Thinking the cafe will close soon, he takes it and his nights are filled with “bad” desperate video dates with lonely women.

When JUNG wanders into the cafe, she likes the emptiness of the place. She orders a latte which is terribly made by CHAE but she accepts his apology as he explains it is his first job. JUNG starts to search for a distraction when she finds the AI dating service. She signs up and CHAE is shocked with a ping notification on his phone. It is JUNG requesting a date. CHAE looks at her and panics. He can’t chat up her when she is looking at him. The first encounter at the cafe is mostly silence on his part as JUNG merely recalls her gloomy social life. When the timer expires the session, JUNG leaves but returns almost daily for a bad cup of coffee and an AI session.

During her visits, HAN begins to take an interest in her. It makes CHAE jealous, but there is nothing he can do since he has no confidence to ask her out “for real.” But HAN’s bad pick up lines and lack of charm turns JUNG off. Worried that JUNG will not return, CHAE goes outside and stops her . . . and apologizes for his bosses behavior. She agrees to come back.

Later, she confides in him (as he stands in silence) that she has fallen for a fake guy which is very unhealthy. He nods aggressively when she says she will break up with the bot and find a “real, nice guy.” He continues to nod aggressively until he nearly concusses himself.

CHAE asks HAN for dating advice. HAN knows he likes JUNG so he gives him the exact opposite advice: tell her you were her “fake” boyfriend and listened to all her stories knowing you were making money off her troubles. When CHAE confessed to JUNG, she storms out very hurt (HAN in back snickering at the fall-out). CHAE is devastated; he quits.

A month later, CHAE signs up as a client in the AI dating app. He is connected to a bot that looks like JUNG. Boldly, he asks the...

.... avatar if she is JUNG, a real person he knows. The call is immediately cut off. CHAE is startled into a quest to figure out why JUNG acted this way. He begins to remember bits of information about her past real dates to pin-point the places she went to a single neighborhood. After a week of wandering it, she finds her shopping at a fruit stand. With all the courage he can muster, he approaches her to ask her “are you alright?”

Startled, JUNG drops a watermelon on his foot, breaking his large toe. As CHAE is on the ground rolling in pain, the grocery lady tells JUNG “you know, you have to pay for that,” which causes JUNG to laugh “yeah, it is gonna cost more than the melon.” Standing over him, JUNG says “I will pay for the hospital bill, but you must pay for dinner.” A confused CHAE says “are you asking ME out?”

That last paragraph sent me 🤣🤣
Up to right before it I was surprised Mary was giving us a straightforward script, and then that! 😂😂

I dislike one-sided knowledge, information? What is it called I wonder? in love stories.

I would prefer the barista not know the truth either. And both of them start to get inklings and doubts at the same rate. Him talking like the bot or better yet mentioning fake bots, and her talking about what she has talked with the bot... Both starting to fall for each other and both feeling extremely embarrassed/scared to ask/tell the truth. Hmmm... yes, that would be lovely.

And PLEASE let a slew of hot hot ahjussis make cameo appearances as the blind dates!!🤩🤩

My dream casting? Jeon Mi Do and Jun.

But I don't know if their rl age gap would be too much on screen...

If so, Jeon Mi Do and Yoo Seung Ho would also be a couple to make me swoon!

Another great couple would be Shin Hyun Bin and Kwak Dong Yeon!

Ha ha! I just said cameo and came down and see that you mentioned hot Ahjuicy cameos!! Yes yes. Make it happen somebody!!

I think in the plot he knows that the AI bots are human but he doesn’t know he is the one talking to her. So your ask of both starting to fall for each other and figuring out slowly would be perfect!!

Not s fan of SHB but definitely vote for Kwak Dong Yeon as the barista. I like Kim So Yeon and Shin Hye Sun to play the noona.

I haven't been posting for these as much because I feel like I can never quite think of who I would want. But then I remembered that Hong Kyung exists and now I will accept no substitutes for the ML in this drama! His pairing? How about Sooyoung? They have enough of an age gap to count as a noona romance, but no so much that it will generate an annoying amount of angst and I think she would do well.

As for blind date cameos, definitely Yoon Park, but also let's get Joo Won, and I think it would be funny to have her irl partner Jung Kyung-ho show up as another!

He was charming.

I never did! Is it available somewhere? I'll be honest, my pick of him is entirely based on his performance in Revenant and my otherwise unfounded but absolute confidence that he will be swoony and charming without even trying too hard.

If Mi-kyung is the FL, we can choose a very young bartender among the thirty-somethings.
Otherwise, I find it hard to name someone very young ... the only one that comes to my mind is Moon, and he is v e r y young. I believe the ML better be older than 15.

Leads: Seo Kang Joon (already has experience being not-human) and Song Ha Yoon (already has an experience bonding with machines/AI) LOL

Coffee shop:
Choi Hyun Wook: part timer that doesn't get paid enough for cleaning all of his boss' disasters.
Kim Seul Gi and Kwang Dong Yeon: regulars. This couple goes to the cafe only to see the FL's dates fail and gossip about it.
Lee Do Hyun: ML's dongsaeng. Goes there to "study" aka. see his hyung fail in love.
Lee Jae Wook: goes there to "study" with his bestie. aka. has a crush in his friend's hyung.
Yoon Eun Hye: FL's bestie. The only one that actually goes for the coffee. She's so used to seeing her friend fail in love, she doesn't care anymore.

Dates:
Choi Daniel aka. I can't cut my nails because my mom is on vacation.
Seo In Guk aka. my name is Louie and I spend the money I don't have on expensive stuff.
Gong Yoo aka. I know I'm all that. I'm out of your league... also, I'm not breaking my neck trying to look at your face.
Kim Ji Seok aka. I was an idol in the past and I can't get over that.
Ha Seok Jin aka. who are you?
Lee Sang Yeob aka. I'm actually a decent guy.

I feel like this premise calls for an actor that who has that “warmth” and “easygoing” aura to them, and atm, I can think of a few:
Jung Hae In, Park Seo Joon, Park Bo Gum, Jo Jung Seok

As for the FL, someone who gives off that really simply, clean, unpretentious and introvert feel:
Jung So Min, Ko Sung Hee, Han Ji Min, and Won Jin Ah
