News bites: July 31, 2024

  • tvN has been bustling in promos for their August premieres and character posters have newly entered through Love Next Door. With Jung Hae-in (D.P. 2), Jung So-min (Alchemy of Souls), Kim Ji-eun (Branding in Seongsu), and Yoon Ji-on (Serendipity’s Embrace) as our neighborhood quartet, the rom-com will be airing weekends starting on August 17. [News1]

  • It’s been a busy year for both Lee Jun-young (Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale) and Jung Eun-ji (Miss Night and Day), who are now in talks for a new romance called 24-Hour Health Club. With Lee up to play an exercise-obsessed trainer, Jung may be taking on the role of a travel agency assistant manager. Production is currently in the early stages with PD Park Joon-soo attached to direct. [JTBC, Newsen]

  • Suzy (Doona) is being courted for the new period drama Delusion (roughly translated) and may become our ~mysterious~ vampire lead. Set against the backdrop of 1935 Gyeongseong (Seoul in present day) – as well as 1800 Shanghai – the story is based on a popular webtoon by the same title and has filmmaker Han Jae-rim (The 8 Show, Emergency Declaration) at the helm. [News1, Osen]
  • Jo Hye-joo (My Demon) confirmed casting for ENA’s upcoming To My Hae-ri, playing an announcer with an unrequited crush on Kang Hoon (A Time Called You), a (hopefully cute) second go-around for the two after Secret Romantic Guesthouse. Headlined by Shin Hye-sun (Welcome to Samdal-ri) and Lee Jin-wook (Sweet Home 3), the romance is expected to broadcast on September 23 in the Monday-Tuesday slot. [Sports Kyunghyang]

  • tvN’s No Gain No Love released a new poster as well, setting up the perfect shot for Shin Mina’s (Our Blues) proposal, supposedly from her (fake) husband-to-be Kim Young-dae (Moon in the Day). Coming to our screens on August 26 along with co-stars Lee Sang-yi (My Demon) and Han Ji-hyun (Cheer Up), production has PD Kim Jung-shik (Work Later, Drink Now) directing with scripts by Kim Hye-young (Her Private Life. [Sports Donga]
  • Adding a mix of genres into August’s plentiful pool of new shows, ENA’s Your Honor released a new poster and teaser combo, showcasing our cruelly entangled leads. Starring Sohn Hyun-joo (Captivating the King), Kim Myung-min (Law School), Kim Do-hoon (7 Escape – Resurrection), and Heo Nam-joon (The Impossible Heir), the crime-thriller is set to premiere on August 12 in less than 2 weeks. Those are cute posters for Love Next Door.

Your Honor also got my attention for its interesting and entangled relationship of the four leads.

Love the character posters for Love Next Door especially Yoon Ji-on whom I'm currently hating in Serendipity’s Embrace.

Omo, a Kang Hoon x Jo Hye-joo reunion. They made such a beautiful couple in Secret Romantic Guesthouse. (However! I will never forgive her character for telling him, "You were the one who should've died.")

Although I knew that Kang Hoon was cast in To My Harry, I had no interest in the story, not to mention that a "split personality" melodrama featuring non-favorite Shin hye sun was a big turn-off. But, Jo Hye Joo - in a "main" role, perhaps paired once again with Kang Hoon? This is the first time I've seen her mentioned and is enough for me to give it a try. HongJoo couple stole every scene in Secret Guesthouse and I'm betting they will repeat. 😊

Looking forward to that Kang Hoon and Jo Hye-joo reunion. I loved them in Secret Romantic Guesthouse. But I agree with you, the way her character acted at the end of the show was unforgivable.

Our watchman deserved someone better. He was doing his job. Her fiancé tried to kill the crown prince, her sister's husband. I stopped shipping them after that.

I tell myself that they were following the webtoon (or novel?). Regardless, those two were magic, they were short-changed for a totally unmemorable "main" couple and perhaps magic/chemistry will strike twice. 😊

They were so mean with the Watchman who saved them a lot of times and just did his duty!

No. 2. 24-HOUR HEALTH CLUB. Probably a pass but the Lee Jung-young/Jung Hae-in fight scenes (eps. 3) in Netflix’s D.P. (2021) were excellent. My understanding is that no stunt doubles were used. After training for all that playing an ‘exercise-obsessed trainer’ should be a piece of cake for Lee Jun-young.

Every bit of promo and marketing for Love next Door looks so cute. I'm afraid to get my hopes too high, but it's already too late I guess.

I'm glad to see Lee Jun Young in a new drama, after watching Dreaming of a fairytale I ended up watching May I help you and thought it was really soft and charming. Lol then I watched Brave Citizen but had to forward through a lot of the worst bullying scenes but Shin Hae Sun <3, and Jun Young was way too good at being psychotic, talk about a big character change lol. Looking forward to seeing him in another romantic comedy again.

Is it me or does Yoon Ji-on look like he just came off the Serendipity set still in that characters clothes for his photoshoot?

Well, here’s to hoping he’ll be playing a very different role in Mom’s Friend’s Son though! 😵‍💫🤓

Yes please, as this weeks ‘You said you would never change’ deserved a slap. Three years of tumbleweed and he expects an open armed joyous embrace and carry on as if nothing happened😡

“Three years of tumbleweed” 😂😂😂

Yes, he definitely has delusional tendencies there - leaning on creepy. 🫣

It really makes me laugh that a trauma, recovering from injury etc. means years of no contact so as not to appear less of a man. A simple well thought out message in writing would be kinder and more effective than this Bermuda Triangle approach.

“Bermuda Triangle approach” is now the official name for this hahahaha! 🌱Beansprout award🫘 to Mother Bean for always having the best terms!

@jls943 thank you for my Beansprout🥰

I am not watching SERENDIPITY but Yoon Ji-on gave such an intriguing performance in MBC’s TOMORROW (2021) that his casting is another reason I will be watching MOM’S FRIEND’S SON on Netflix.

Jun and Jung! That could be fun. Jun is going to flex his muscles as a trainer - sign me up. But can we just do 12 week membership and not 16 😅

Since I’m the only person in the universe who thinks that BTIOFL was 85% ruined by the last stretch of storyline, I didn’t really warm up to JSM until Alchemy of Souls. And since she’s not playing an artificially weak murderous sorceress, I’m a little cautious about Mom’s Friend’s Son, which is probably healthy anyway. I do appreciate that the posters have already wound golden threads around our couples’ arms to make sure we know who goes with whom!

Always happy to see Lee Jun-young, and he’d be great with Jung Eun-ji, so I hope this works out! I had never seen her before Miss Day and Night but I’m enjoying her there. I’ll probably try No Gain No Loss (or is it Love? I’ve seen it both ways) but hold off on Your Honor until I see some feedback.

Same thing. Because This is My First Life is the English title, a more literal translation might be This Life is Our First, I just combined them.

I heartily agree with you on Because This Is ... so much so that I almost skipped Alchemy when Jung So-min stepped in. 😅 I don't know what real life considerations affected the writing in Because ... but it felt like totally different characters from another drama. JSM lost a lot of goodwill in my book because of that. 😄

I just happened to see the first couple of episodes a while back and I was like - oh how did I forget this was so awesome. Then of course I remembered how spectacularly it derailed. 🙃😂

I am interested in all and equally cautiously optimistic for all of them. 😅

- Mother's Friend's Son seems quite promising. 🤞

- Lee Jun-young and Jung Eun-ji pairing is the one which I am looking forward to the most.

- Kang Hoon deserves so much better. Hope this is his breakthrough drama which seals his ML status. I share @panshel's strong objections to the FL's previous drama character. One would have thought all that imposed isolation would have given her a certain amount of self reflection. 😧

I know it is a problem with the writing and our artists are largely blameless 😅 but I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who gets riled up enough to side eye the artist's next work. 😄

It's curious how a light sageuk like Secret Romantic Guesthouse left many of us a little "traumatized" with that second (and more interesting) couple and the words she said to him. I'm definitely not going to forget that scene.

😂🙃🤣 I love your description. It was definitely a light sageuk. Indeed many of us continued watching for Kang Hoon alone. After all their sweet interactions I rather expected the 2FL to say - I'm glad you are alive. This was like a slap on my face and actually made me question the character. I too stopped shipping them then and there. There are certain things one should not say and certain lines one must never cross like never ever and this was one of them.

I just couldn't wrap my head around their relationship or root for their HE after that.

I get it that the sentence was mean to convey her frustration not just for the fiancé but also her life after the incident but it didn't seem like a hiccup any relationship has to endure but more like a deal breaker.
