News bites: July 23, 2024

Go Hyun-jung, Jang Dong-yoon

  • Preparing ahead for their 2025 lineup, SBS announced the crime-thriller The Mantis with Go Hyun-jung (Masked Girl) headlining as our title character, a convicted murderer who killed five men. But when a copycat killer newly appears 20 years later, estranged son and cop Jang Dong-yoon (Like Flowers in Sand) reluctantly seeks her help. Adapted from the 2017 French series La Mante, filmmaker Byun Young-joo (Helpless) is at the helm with scripts by screenwriter Lee Young-jong (12.12: The Day). [SBS]

  • Speaking of remakes, Park Min-young (Marry My Husband) is reviewing an offer to star as a con artist in The Confidence Man KR (working title), based on the hit Japanese drama The Confidence Man JP. Production for the comedy caper is still in the early stages, with PD Nam Ki-hoon (Destined With You, Big Bet) attached to direct and writing by Hong Seung-hyun (Criminal Minds, Joseon X-Files). [E Daily, JTBC]
  • After generously dishing out a mountain pile of stills, an official first poster has finally dropped with Kim Byung-chul (Doctor Cha), Yoon Se-ah (Hierarchy), and Park Joo-hyun (The Forbidden Marriage) as our titular Perfect Family. Coming to our screens on August 14, the mystery series is notably directed by Japanese filmmaker Yukisada Isao (The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese) and also marks the re-opening of KBS’s Wednesday-Thursday slot. • Gu Kyo-hwan (Parasyte – The Grey) has been tapped to join tvN’s crime sci-fi Signal 2, potentially reuniting with Lee Je-hoon (Chief Detective 1958) after recently co-starring in the film Escape. With writer Kim Eun-hee (Revenant) once again penning the scripts – and filmmaker Ahn Tae-jin (The Night Owl) newly taking the director reins – hopefully we’ll be seeing Kim Hye-soo (Under the Queen’s Umbrella) and Jo Jin-woong (The Good Bad Mother) reprise their roles in the sequel as well. • A new fantasy thriller called Reborn is in the works and casting is reportedly in talks with Suho (Missing Crown Prince) to join the lineup. Starring a past-life-remembering Esom (LTNS) and detective Byun Yo-han (Uncle Samsik) who can read other people’s past lives, production is being led by PD Lee Dong-yoon (Race, Sunbae Don’t Put on That Lipstick) and writer Han Ah-reum (See You in My 19th Life). [News1, The Fact]
  • tvN’s No Gain No Love (previously No Loss in Love) has come out with new stills, showcasing our marriage-bound heroine Shin Mina (Our Blues), who’ll soon be proposing a walk down the aisle with Kim Young-dae (Moon in the Day) in a contracted union. Also starring Lee Sang-yi (My Demon) and Han Ji-hyun (Cheer Up), the rom-com is slated to premiere on August 26 and will be streaming internationally on Amazon Prime. [Sports Chosun]

Oooooh, I find everything about The Mantis interesting! Now to forget about it until it gets closer.

I’m down to try No Gain No Love (does this title make sense to anyone else?), but I’m more interested in hearing more about Reborn.

I know that I will watch the second season of Signal, so for all our sakes, I hope it’s better than I generally expect second seasons to be.

I hope Signal 2 lives up to the original too

Makes no sense for sure. Why change it to this? Honestly. Are there gremlins in charge of choosing the English titles? Often they ignore the perfectly fine Korean titles to arrive at nonsense.

I hereby volunteer the Beanie Community as a focus group when they need to come up with an English title. We may not always agree with each other, but we can at least help them avoid totally nonsensical ones.

😂 But… The Fun Titles are part of the charm! I’m just waiting until they settle for “My Lovely Gain”.

The Mantis got my attention. I always like a good cop procedural and a dysfunctional family drama in the mix.

Keeping an eye out for Signal 2.

1. The Mantis is screaming watch me at me and I'm gonna honor it. I'm so pissed this is slated for 2025.

2. I was expecting news of Park Min-young's next drama some days ago. And, voila!

3. What sort of poster is that 😂. Who's burning who?

5. This one is in perfect hands, both writing and directing.

I am kind of shocked that No. 4 SIGNAL: SEASON 2 was buried in the middle of this report.
On the other hand, if you just looked at the photos at the top re No. 1. SBS’s THE MANTIS and didn’t read the accompanying report you might think the noona of all noona romances was being announced lol. SBS just gave us a great crime drama in Ji Sung’s CONNECTION. I am a big Jang Dong-yoon fan so I will definitely be there. My only Go Hyung-jung drama is SBS’s RETURN (2018) (early kdrama days for me) which she left under lets say disturbing circumstances so it is wonderful to see her in a lead role here. RETURN was a drama about a bunch of bad boys a la CONNECTION. Also if I was the Producer I would be looking all over to find actor Dong Ha and get him into THE MANTIS.

I actually wanted to lead with Gu Kyo-hwan, but then the Go Hyun-jung/Jang Dong-yoon news dropped and I painfully forced myself to reshuffle the list... At least it's first in the second grouping? Or so I tell myself lol😅

I don't mind the age gap but I can't imagine a speck of chemistry between these two.

I'm super excited about #1 and #2 (I'm a sucker for good thrillers)

- #1; both leads are acting powerhouses. We rarely get a portrayal of female serial killers or psychopaths and here we go. SBS mostly gets their thrillers right (see Nobody Knows, Through the Darkness, Connection). I'm very positive about this.

#2 - It is Yoon Se Ah and Kim Byung Chul reunion! I'm a bit worried that it is broadcasted on KBS2 but hey it is helmed by a Japanese director (an a filmmaker one at that ... how much does that cost?) so I suspect they burned quite a lot of money for this. The cast is quite well known, too, and it is only 12 episodes. Hopefully, this is a return to form for KBS.
