Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 1-7, 2024

This week we say goodbye to Connection, which cranked up the heat to over 14% with its extended-run finale episode. Also taking it up a notch is Miss Night and Day, reaching a new high of 8.4% (wow!). Not to be outdone, The Auditors jumps from 3.5% to 5.9% for its premiere week (double wow!), and though the schedule is a bit light before the wave of August premieres, who knows what next week will bring.

Let's not forget that Beauty and Mr. Romantic finally reached its highest rating peak but still not yet hitting a 20% mark. I am still patiently waiting for hitting 20% rating mark like every other recent KBS weekenders that are still struggling.

So sad to see that Dare to Love Me didn't get back to 2% rating mark since the second episode but it ended last Tuesday.

I had to drop Beauty & Mr. Romantic recently when the whole Ma-Ri obsession got way out of control. I do like the actors, but the script was getting out there. Maybe I'll pick it up after another week or so.

I think, that was before the wave of new and upcoming Kdramas next month, for the next two weeks, there might be the 2024 Paris Olympics preemptions that would affect some selected Kdramas on TV. I still glad that Kdramas on any streaming platforms didn't affect the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.

I totally forgot about possible preemptions haha
I keep forgetting the olympics is even happening this year.

I guess people found a positive about dramas on streamers.

Good news KBS will revive Wed-Thurs with The Perfect Family. Bad news they’ve shut down Mon-Tue. In fact KBS will dissolve miniseries entirely and return to producing sitcoms like High Kick because they are cheaper and don’t need star casts and elaborate sets. To think this is the same channel that churned out Hallyu dramas like DOTS just 8 years ago.

Oh WOW!! Connection ended with a high! I am so happy. The show deserves it.
The last episode was 90 minutes and didn’t feel that way. I am glad the show gave us enough time with the leads in the last episode to feel the warmth of their friendship after everything they have been through. There is going to be a huge void for me on weekends. Will miss this show and Ji Sung 💙

Mobster is doing well for its slot.

SBS is finally back on track with two hits in 2024, Flex X Cops and Connection. I hope The Good Partner will be able to do well in terms of ratings. Crime thrillers are definitely doing well this year. Another drama I hope to do well is The Auditors.

As for my sole and only romcom this year,My Sweet Mobster...I am glad that it is doing better week after week, it is nice to see that it is inching close to 3%, not dropping to the forgettable 0.5-1%.

SBS remains one network still capable of producing excellent dramas in the cops/crime/mystery genre.

The first 2 episodes of The Auditors were fantastic, that massive ratings jump was well deserved.

My sweet mobster deserves a bigger audience, but its clear that weekday dramas are dead.

Also happy for Connection an excellent Mystery drama that was well written, well acted, well directed, no gimmicks, idols or "visual" actors

That was a shock to me too 😁
To be fair, I think they meant "visual only".

LOL

He is more famous and respected for his acting talents than anything else, it definately wasnt a knock on his looks.

I am a big fan of his

Yes, he has the looks despite being 47 years old this year , but he is known more for his acting chop.

Been a fan of his since All In days.

And Ji Sung always picks great scripts. I like him for his acting too fan of his after watching Secret Love. He kinda acts with his entire body.

Yeap, not every drama scripts should be picked up. With seniority and years of experience in the drama industry, Ji Sung deserves to be picky about the scripts.

Speaking of ‘visuals’ perhaps Jin Goo’s appearance with his mane of glory very late in episode one of THE AUDITORS and full on in episode two might possibly have contributed to the rise in ratings.
THE AUDITORS was so good in the first two episodes that I expect the ratings to continue to rise.

If the following episodes are as good as the first 2, its definately going to be a hit.

Jin Goo and his shampoo advert worthy mane are definately a reason to keep watching lol

The ratings for the Monday/Tuesday slot sadden me. This used to be the highest-rated slot of the week where epic period and sageuk dramas thrived, such as Hur Jun, Dae Jang Geum, Jumong, QSD, and Giant.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like the current audience has any appetite for dramas like that or the patience for anything longer than 12 episodes. Too many dramas are going online instead of airing on tv and the single drop formula doesn’t work with dramas like that.

If "REBORN RICH" on a cable channel could achieve a 27% viewership in just 16 episodes, it shows that local viewers still enjoy period dramas. If the writer, Kim Young-hyun, were to return to her roots, I'm sure viewers would tune in, even for a 20-episode sageuk.

Reborn Rich was not a period drama just like Queen of Tears was not a romance drama. Both were makjang chaebol dramas disguised as other genres and relied heavily on the star power of their lead actors. Even My Dearest couldn't break past 15% and had to split the drama into 2 parts of 10 episodes to keep the audience engaged. The viewing trend has changed something that the industry has acknowledged and writers are focused on writing trendy dramas like The Glory or Lovely Runner. Most studios don't have the budget for big historical dramas but dramas like Mr Queen, Queen's Umbrella and Knight Flower are easier to film because they incorporate modern elements which appeals to a larger and younger audience. Cutting down of episodes is not just for audience attention span but also because actors charge exorbitant amounts that public channels definitely can't afford but even cable channels have to think if they are worth spending money on. If you notice JTBC rarely makes historical dramas because the returns on investment are not good enough. The shorter the drama the better. Though it doesn't always mean a shorter filming time because The 8 Show took almost a year to film and each season of Gyeongsang Creature took 1 year each to film. Even normal 16 episode dramas take 7-8 months to film as opposed to 3-4 months which is also why celebrities charge more since the time spent filming the drama doesn't decrease. Production houses find it difficult to afford these costs. This demotivates writers and directors to make dramas like the one you mentioned even if they returned to their roots nobody would give them the money or time to make those dramas anymore. They have to make shorter trendier dramas to stay relevant.

BEAUTY AND MR ROMANTIC has continued to struggle. Only by the end of episode 32 are the pieces really starting to come together but we still have some bumps in the road ahead.

MY SWEET MOBSTER deserves far more love.
