I’m
finallyhere with our completed Top 10 Dramabeans Spreadsheet. It was so fun to see people popping into the spreadsheet while I was adding the tallies along the way over the last month or so. Thank you everyone for your patience while I finished this project -- I kept finding bugs along the way, but I think I have everything complete now!A quick overview for anyone who hasn’t stumbled across this spreadsheet yet: This is a tally of all of the Top 10 K Dramas lists that have been polled on Dramabeans over the years (2017, 2022, 2023, and 2024). I started this spreadsheet last year after the 2023 Top 10 Drama Chat to compare the data across all the years. I’ve tried to balance jamming as much interesting information on the sheet as possible while also making it user-friendly and accessible for non-spreadsheet-nerds. I’ve put notes (marked by black triangles) throughout the sheet to try to explain my rationales, organization, and ways to read the data. This spreadsheet is part of a larger project to compile interesting data, guides, and supports created by your fellow Beanies into one large Beanie Resource Google Drive.
Some interesting data about this year’s responses: In our 2024 Top 10 Drama Chat, we had 97 responders, 67 of whom had never participated in a Top 10 Drama Chat before -- welcome! We have many Beanies who have responded in two chats before and several who have responded in three, but there were only two Beanies who have contributed lists to all four Top 10 Drama Chats -- @redfox and @wonhwa. Incredible! Overall, we’ve had a total of 487 lists contributed on these Top 10 polls from 2017 to 2024 from 422 different users (or at least 422 different display names -- there may be some other repeats hiding? Regardless, it’s crazy to me how many one-time Top 10 posters we’ve had!).
Our favorites this year spanned 29 years -- from 1995 (Sandglass) to 2024 (with 7 dramas that released since January of this year). A total of 294 unique dramas were listed in the Top 10s -- 58 of which were listed in a Top 10 poll for the first time.
There’s a ton of interesting patterns and narrativizing invited by this data, and I hope this spreadsheet only starts the conversation. I’ll comment below with some of the trends that I noticed while compiling the data, but I’d love to hear all of your observations/thoughts as well. :)

You can find the two lists below on the spreadsheet, but I figured I’d include them here as well for easy access.
Our Top 25 Dramas (from only the 2024 Top 10 lists)
1. Healer: 28 picks (the first drama to earn the #1 spot twice -- 2022 and 2024)
2. Hospital Playlist 1: 27 picks
3. Reply 1988: 22 picks
4. My Ahjussi: 21 picks (tie)
4. Hospital Playlist 2: 21 picks (tie)
6. Forest of Secrets: 20 picks
7. Alchemy of Souls: 19 picks
8. Misaeng: 16 picks (tie)
8. Goblin: 16 picks (tie)
8. Alchemy of Souls 2: 16 picks (tie)
8. Because this is My First Life: 16 picks (tie)
8. Mr. Queen: 16 picks (tie)
13. Forest of Secrets 2: 15 picks (tie)
13. Our Beloved Summer: 15 picks (tie)
15. Lovely Runner: 14 picks
16. Just Between Lovers: 13 picks
16. Extraordinary Attorney Woo: 13 picks
16. The Matchmakers: 13 picks
19. Coffee Prince: 12 picks (tie)
19. Crash Landing on You: 12 picks (tie)
19. It’s Okay to Not Be Okay: 12 picks (tie)
19. Like Flowers in the Sand: 12 picks (tie)
23. My Liberation Notes: 11 picks (tie)
23. Call it Love: 11 picks (tie)
23. Flower of Evil: 11 picks (tie)
Most Popular Over the Years: There isn’t one perfect way to measure a drama’s popularity over time, but I’ve created three different measures that approximate this. This list is an average of those three measures (all of which can be seen on the full sheet under “Overall Cross-year Popularity”), taking into account their popularity in each of the lists since 2017:
1. Healer
2. Reply 1988
3. My Ahussi (tie)
3. Hospital Playlist 1 (tie)
5. Coffee Prince (tie)
5. Forest of Secrets 1 (tie)
7. Misaeng
8. Hospital Playlist 2
9. Forest of Secrets 2
10. Just Between Lovers
11, Signal
12. My Liberation Notes
13. Reply 1997
14. Goblin
15. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
16. Crash Landing on You
17. It's Okay to Not be Okay
18. Alchemy of Souls 2
19. Alchemy of Souls 1
20. Prison Playbook (tie)
20. My Love From Another Star (tie)
22. Because this is My First Life
23. Twenty-five, Twenty-one
24. Mr. Queen (tie)
24. I Hear Your Voice (tie)
God-Tiered Dramas: One of the methods of measuring popularity is the tier system, which looks at the past achievements of each drama. This measure rewards lasting power and continual high ranks. Only four dramas have achieved “God Tier,” the highest honor in this system:
Healer: #1 in 2024, #1 in Overall Cross-year Popularity
Reply 1988: #3 in 2024; #2 in Overall Cross-year Popularity
My Ahjussi: #4 in 2024; #3 in Overall Cross-year Popularity
Coffee Prince: #19 in 2024; #5 in Overall Cross-year Popularity

PSEUDO SUPERLATIVES: While I don’t have formal “superlatives” like with the Bean Count tallies (since I have different kinds of data for this spreadsheet), I still wanted to point out some of the patterns I was seeing in data. Here’s some of those observations, focusing on the long-time dramas/trends:
Tried and True Oldies: Dramas that have withstood the test of time (without a sequel to add new stories/relevance). Classics that are worth a watch for our newer Beanies!
1. Healer (2014): 28 picks this year; the only drama to win #1 twice; been in top five every year
3. Reply 1988 (2015): 22 picks this year; peaked in 2023 (#2 with 26 picks); been in top 10 every year
8. Goblin (2016): 16 picks this year (a new peak); getting more popular?
8. Misaeng (2014): 16 picks this year; peaked in 2017 (#2 with 57 picks)
19. Coffee Prince (2007): 12 picks this year; peaked in 2017 (#1 with 72 picks); by far the oldest drama maintaining popularity on our Top 10 lists
26. Oh Hae Young Again (2016): 10 picks this year; peaked in 2022 (#10 with 18 picks)
26: Signal (2016): 9 picks this year; peaked in 2017 (#2 with 57 picks)
Starting to Feel Their Age?: Dramas that were incredibly popular in the early poll(s), but are seeing some steady decreases in their ranks (some more drastic than others).
34. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo: #8 in 2017, #22 in 2022, #20 in 2023, now #34 (still a good showing -- just one vote away from making it into the “Tried and True”!)
46. My Love From Another Star: #8 in 2017, #27 in 2022, #32 in 2023, now #44
49. Reply 1997: #2 in 2017, #22 in 2022, #20 in 2023, now #49
78. Master’s Sun: #10 in 2017, #15 in 2022, #48 in 2023, now #78.
78. My Name is Kim Sam Soon: #13 in 2017, #47 in 2022, #64 in 2023, now #78
108. Queen In Hyun’s Man: #12 in 2017, #34 in 2022, #48 in 2023, now #108
Faded into Obscurity: Dramas that were in the Top 25 in 2017 but have since seen years when no one picked them. (Maybe they didn’t age well, maybe they just got forgotten/replaced over time.)
School 2013: #14 in 2017; 0 picks in 2023
Goong (Princess Hours): #15 in 2017; 0 picks in 2023
My Girlfriend is a Guniho: #16 in 2017; 0 picks in 2023
Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: #18 in 2017; 0 picks in 2024
Princess’s Man: #18 in 2017; 0 picks in 2024
Full House: #20 in 2017; 0 picks in 2022-2024
The Greatest Love (The Best Love): #25 in 2017; 0 picks in 2024

Of the "fading into obscurity" group, I do wish more new viewers would discover School 2013 - it's not a perfect show, but it's a remarkably nuanced look at the struggles of teenagers on the margins and the subtle but effective way it weaves in queer themes could teach a lot of recent mainstream dramas some lessons.

I think if we had a ‘classic shows you would still recommend’ category those on the starting to feel their age or even the faded into obscurity list would definitely be on that list but with a top ten list the space is too limited to include all the dramas we want so we have be ruthless and betray so many of our favourites.
A top 30 would probably include some of those dramas.

I agree. I can't really participate in a top ten list because however ruthless I am, it's just not how I really feel about the shows in the end.

SUPERLATIVES CONTINUED (focusing on newer trends/information)
More Popular with Time: Dramas that, instead of staying steady or declining over time, seem to be getting more popular as time goes on.
Goblin: Ranked #11 in 2017, #22 in 2022, #16 in 2023, and #8 this year
Mr. Queen: Ranked #34 in 2022, #20 in 2023, and #8 this year
Flower of Evil: Ranked #90 in 2022, #48 in 2023, and #23 this year
New Comeback?: Dramas that defy their slow start/apparent decline, ranking higher this year than would have been expected from past year(s).
7. Alchemy of Souls 1: Despite performing worse than it’s sequel in our Top 10 chat last year, it rose by 25 ranks to end in our #7 position this year, with 3 more votes than its sequel. (Season 2 also had a very strong showing, tying for #8.)
8. Because this is My First Life: Ranked #16 in 2022, #32 in 2023, and then #8 this year
13. Our Beloved Summer: Ranked #15 in 2022, #32 in 2023, and #13 this year.
16. Just Between Lovers: Ranked #3 in 2022, #23 in 2023, and #16 this year
27. Our Blooming Youth: Only received 1 vote in 2023 (#133 rank). Ranked #27 this year.
41. I Hear Your Voice: Ranked #7 in 2017, #27 in 2022, #94 in 2023, and #41 this year
Steady Earners: Recent-ish dramas that don’t seem to be declining in popularity, even as the years pass.
2/4. Hospital Playlist (1&2): Both seasons have stayed in the top 10 since 2022 (its first eligible poll)
5. My Ahjussi (borderline Tried and True, 2018): In top 10 since its first eligible poll
6/13. Forest of Secrets (1&2): First season has been more popular, but both have generally been in top 10
19. Crash Landing On You: Top 20 for last three years
19. It’s Okay to Not Be Okay: Top 20 for last three years
23. My Liberation Notes: Top 25 for last three years
Biggest Debuts: Dramas in their first year of inclusion with the highest ranking
15. Lovely Runner: 14 picks
16. The Matchmakers: 13 picks
19. Like Flowers in the Sand: 12 picks (tie)
27. Moving: 9 picks (tie)
27. My Dearest: 9 picks (tie)
*27. Twinkling Watermelon: 9 picks (tie)
*I thought it was interesting that, despite Twinkling Watermelon dominated our 2023 bean count, ranking first in both “Most Popular” and “Most Loved,” it tied for 27th place in our 2024 top 10 list, beat out by four other 2023-2024 dramas (Lovely Runner (#15), The Matchmakers (#16), Like Flowers in Sand (#19), and Call it Love (#23)). Lovely Runner was our highest ranking new addition to the list, coming in for 15th place. It’s worth noting that the show was about half/two-thirds of the way complete when most of the polls come in. I wonder if this number would have changed at all if the poll was conducted after Lovely Runner finished?

Good question! I want to believe it would have made some difference. Maybe just a little, but a difference nonetheless because it does seem like many of us* found the latter part of LR lacking.
These are such fascinating stats! Thank you for sharing. Interestingly, I recently rewatched Healer and Goblin several years after I saw them for the first time. Healer gave me those same butterflies in my stomach feelings (that opening theme song is nostalgia crack to me!) Goblin felt like it had gotten better in every way. I don't know how that's possible but it's just as you said-some dramas might get popular with age.

I guess LR will take a huge hit in at least the DB community next year. It's still riding the audience wave though (KHS's fan meets were sold out). It would be fun to see if Freaking fairytale would make an entry next year. If this drama lands the finale runway this weekend, it would be one for the keeps.

I am blown away. This is no joke TheOutsidejoke! @kmromrell
What an incredible amount of hard work! My head is bonafide spinning at the numbers. It's so interesting to see the trends. It's quite telling that the juggernaut of this year found no place in the line up at all. Similarly, I would have thought Strong Woman Do Bong Soon or Secretary Kim to have a much stronger presence. It's so interesting to see how perception beats actual trends.
Thank you so much for doing this. And I am still blinking my eyes, unable to believe Our Blooming Youth had such a steep climb on the charts this year, even though honestly I am not surprised.

You make a really good point about perception. It's interesting how there's dramas each year that somehow have captured many Beanies hearts, and yet I've never even heard of them prior to the count. I'm curious -- when you say the "juggernaut of this year," which dramas are you referring to? I have one that I think of, but I'm now wondering if that's just a perception filter as well.

I would take a guess that you are referring to Queen of Tears. If that is so then your perception matches mine.
I was also curious - you mentioned that a majority of our the commentators are first timers. I am wondering - could it be that many are active participants for a few years and then eventually they roll back while new people take their place?
I met a very young Mom recently, she isn't even 30, and she is a 20 year old veteran of k-dramas. Another one of my perception broken where I thought only older people watched K-dramas before the pandemic.
TheOutsideJoke (@kmromrell)
June 28, 2024 at 6:03 PM
@minniegupta1 Yep, Queen of Tears is what came to mind for me!
That definitely could be! Personally, I was lurking around this site since back when the 2017 Top 10 happened, but I didn't start posting on the site until the last year or so. I'm guessing there are a lot of others like me as well who have been around the site but don't post much, though it does still seem strange to me that there's so few constants when I feel like I see the same names around commenting sections all the time.
(And I might be part of your broken perception -- I found kdramas in 2016 when I was about 18, and I've been around ever since!)
Minnie🫘👩🏻🚀Pioneer and Teacher 👩🏻🏫🌱🏹

@kmromrell For me that would make you a veteran. I didn't know K-drama was a universe in itself before 2022. And judging by how much effort you have put in, it must be a passion. Have you watched any of the dramas that you find on these lists while curating?
A while back some kind of weird bug linked new beanies to decade old comments in email notifications. So I went looking and found a goldmine of conversations among members who I have never seen posting; But I found redfox and owl, and another member (I forget, forgive my poor memory). It as exciting but at the same time a bit sad. I wonder if those members still watch K-dramas with same passion, though maybe not post on DB anymore.

@minniegupta1 It's definitely something I've come to enjoy a lot! For a long time, it was just like American TV for me -- I would go in spurts of watching a few dramas then rotate through other interests. These days, though, it's my main tv source. And I've definitely used these spreadsheets to get a lot of recommendations! I hadn't heard of Like Flowers in the Sand until I started tallying this Top 10 list, so I started that a few days ago. I also got some inspiration from our 2023 Bean Count and watched a few of our highest ranking dramas there. :)
That's true -- a lot of names that used to show up a lot on the site don't anymore. The site underwent some changes when the original masterminds stepped down some years back. I wonder if that combined with the culture-change that will always come with a new demographic of viewers shifted the audience of the site a bit, so some older Beanies didn't resonate as much with the community anymore? I don't know. I'd like to think they're still happily watching k dramas wherever they are. I'm just glad this community is here in whatever form it takes. :)

I was thinking of you, because I was very sure I saw it in your list last year. It probably had a grand total of two votes, yours and mine 🤣. It was #4 on my list last year, and it rose to #1 this year on my list - just because it gets even better on a rewatch, and the community watch sealed it). It's fascinating how, as more beanies got a chance to see it, it has climbed the chart.
I think next year we might have a similar result with Freaking Fairytale, especially if a big platform picks it up. I am hoping I will love the ending (and as of now, our beanie friends indicate I will), it will definitely replace Lovely Runner on my list.

I think some of the debuts will disappear in future top ten polls but still remain on highly recommended lists. I would recommend The matchmakers for a New to sageuk top 10. Time travel top ten dramas would have Twinkling watermelon higher than Lovely runner for me simply because they didn’t waste energy on an unnecessary killer instead they used a more realistic baddie in their story.
Twenty five twenty one and Yumi’s cells are the ones I really did expect to stay around.

My comments kept being swept out and disappearing. I’m trying to understand the mechanics as you definitely spent time and had lots of enjoyment. From what I see, the years don’t matter except as organizing frame. It is after all detecting the classics and the upcoming. There has to be a constant somewhere or a possible corner solution.
Required fields are marked *
TheOutsideJoke (@kmromrell)
June 28, 2024 at 11:25 AM
Yes, the years are just there as one way to parse out the data. There is some impact on when the drama came out for the cross-year comparison, since dramas that have been out longer have had more time to either show their staying power or start fizzling out, but the year doesn't play any direct role in the data.
I'm no expert in economics, so I don't fully understand the concept of a corner solution or a constant's role in that, but I'd love to hear more if you had more thoughts there!

June 29, 2024 at 10:15 AM
I think the concept if taste has not been fully explored in the field in terms of people’s choices. K-ent industry peops might find your analysis useful as they look into the formula of the god-tiered successes. Behaviorally, one would be interested in that point one is not willing to trade off one’s choice for the other. Economics only captures what one can out a value to. So there, if I were a serious student I’d look behind for production, marketing costs, network reach as factors. Interestingly, you can use your spreadsheets in a postgrad program.
Reply1988 - 🍊Mother Bean🍊
June 29, 2024 at 11:30 PM
Thanks for writing your comments until they stopped disappearing. I agree the stats could go into a postgrad programme. Things that come to mind for me are the outcomes for the writers. What are the factors for standout dramas is it the story, chemistry, common theme at the time, the actors, the budgets the day they aired, what the competition was at that time.
Queen of Tears may have got the ratings but a smaller budget, lower rated show got on the top ten while still airing. The interesting thing would also be the newbie and veteran actors that star in standout shows that have ridiculous schedules promoting themselves after the show to ride the popularity how long does their popularity stay. Is their next drama a hit or not? Do they get great roles or typecast?

I thought it was pretty impressive! I was actually surprised that there were only two of you that were present for all four of the polls. To be fair, though, I think some people skipped last year because they figured they had the same list, and the Top 10 comment section from 2017 was over 7 years ago now (yikes! That feels so weird!). There were another 13 people who had commented in 3 out of 4 of the years. :)

Despite the success of blockbuster films “Exhuma” and “The Roundup: Punishment” in the first half of this year, the majority of Korean films have struggled, with only six managing to surpass 1 million in admissions. According to Korean Film Council data, six films -- "Exhuma,” “The Roundup: Punishment,” “The Birth of Korea,” “Citizen of a Kind,” “Following” and “Alienoid: Return to the Future” -- had attracted over 1 million moviegoers.
A total of 55 Korean films have been released in the first six months of the year. Only four – “Exhuma” (11.9 million admissions) “The Roundup: Punishment” (11.4 million admissions), “The Birth of Korea” (1.1 million admissions) and “Picnic” (350,000 admissions) – have managed to at least break even.
Star-studded casts have not been of great help in getting audiences into cinema seats. “Alienoid: Return to the Future,” released in January, starred Kim Tae-ri, Ryu Joon-yeol and Kim Woo-bin. Its breakeven point was at around 7 million tickets sold. But the movie left theaters at just some 1 million sold.
Director Kim Tae-yong’s “Wonderland,” which features Tang Wei, Suzy, Park Bo-gum, Jung Yu-mi, Choi Woo-sik and Gong Yoo, has only attracted sold 610,000 tickets since opening June 5. The movie needs 2.9 million to break even.
Son Suk-ku’s “Troll Factory” saw 970,000 admissions, while its break even point was about double that, at 1.9 million. Gang Dong-won’s latest crime action flick, “The Plot” only filled some 520,000 seats, far short of breaking even at 2 million.
Note: the reported break even point may be less than the actual box office needed to break even if marketing and distribution costs are factored into the actual net profit margin. A break even point should be 2 to 2 1/2 times its production budget.
For years, the unwritten rule in Korean cinema was to release films on Wednesdays, perhaps to gain word-of-mouth buzz for weekend sales. However, this tradition is gradually fading. The movie "Hijacking," starring Ha Jung-woo, Yeo Jin-goo, Sung Dong-il, and Chae Soo-bin, was released on a Friday, marking a shift in the industry's approach. Until the 1990s, most movies premiered on Saturdays. The shift to a five-day work week and the designation of cultural days influenced the move to Wednesday releases.
This year, at least six Seoul movie theaters will close. Daehan Cinema, once a prominent theater in downtown Seoul, will close its doors in September, marking the end of 66 years of operation. The theater said that it would cease operations on Sept. 30. It cited "ongoing losses due to the changing paradigm of the film screening industry" and "asset optimization and business structure enhancement" as the reasons for ending operations. Critics and fans will lament that the communal experience of watching a movie in a theater is a fading tradition.

More than the public, the production studio are guilty for me.
The movies last 2-3 weeks and leave the movie theaters. They don't give time to the movies to gain a public and the public to hear about it.
The price of a place is expensive too. It's not a simple activity anymore, you need to think if the movie worths it.

I know I said it's sad that theaters are closing and people aren't going to them but then I *just* saw a trailer for a movie and instantly thought (a) this feels like flop (b) I definitely would wait to see it/I wouldn't pay to see it
(For those curious about the trailer I saw, it was RED ONE). I could definitely be wrong about it being a flop haha. What do I know about those things
I feel like the last money I saw in theaters was Spider-Man: no way home (but to be fair, I also watched it more than once in theaters haha)
It's hard to think of any movies nowadays that feel like it's worth the time, money, and effort involved in going to a movie theater

Both big factors. They don't seem to stick around long enough. We once had to chase a movie to its last week 50 miles from our home because the movie only played for a week or two in the theater close to our home. Even movies like Oppenheimer didn't have enough screen time.

I've only watched a few korean celebrities who host youtube shows, one of them being Yu Jae Seok, and I thought the celebrities, for the most part, were inviting their friends and close aquaintances. I thought that added to the casual, informal appeal to shows. During one of Jae Seok's episodes of Just an Excuse, Cha Tae Hyun was on and talked appearance fees or something. I think Jae Seok said there was no appearance fees (at the time) and fast forward to some episodes later, it was mentioned guests would get paid after their 3rd appearance (but again, I don't remember and I'm not sure).
Another youtube channel I watch occassionally watch is Seo In Guk's and once again, I thought it was mainly his friends or acquaintances only for that illusion to pop when his recent guests (some members of Super Junior) said that their agency gave them a list of youtubers and they chose him (well, one guy chose him and the other followed). And then a new girl group did their group appearance interview debut on his channel.
Back to Yu Jae Seok, his channel has been very successful and they even hosted their own little award show that has over 9 million views and reporters actually congratulated someone, during a press con, for winning.
It's interesting to me that youtube channels are being the place to go for promos rather than just the informal hobbies they seemed to start out as. I mean it's still fairly informal/casual but now with PPL and agencies involved, it feels like it's only a matter of time before it feels as produced and regulated as tv shows

These Korean YouTube shows have come to replaced the cancelled Korean TV talk shows. They are cheap to produce and guests are either friends or promoting a song or a movie/TV show. Since they are not broadcasters, they are not required to give guests appearance fees but I think they probably do compensate them (even regular TV variety shows pay guests very little money.)

I wonder what actors do with themselves when their projects end up stalled or not released and they don't seem to be getting any new projects. This came to mind because I was rewatching The Uncanny Counter and wondered what the lead actor was up to which seems to be nothing much. There's only 2 other "upcoming" dramas listed on My Drama List and there's no updates about them.
I feel kinda bad for him because The Uncanny Counter was such a big thing and success for him and now it's (so far) the last role he's been able to do.

Thing is, actual verdict doesn't matter much - when it comes to controversy like that, as long as it's not cleared fully VERY FAST, you're pretty much doomed as a celeb in SK. Their general public is ironically far more inclined to forgive a murder than being a nasty classmate in one's past. Which tells you a thing or two about how bad the issue of teen violence is there atm...
Actress from MMH admitted being partially guilty and apologized iirc, which means we probably won't hear from hear from her again for a looong time - and certainly not as a rising star anymore.

Happy Friday, Beanies! I've been a bit unwell these days – certain someone decided that misery loves company and "kindly" shared his summer cold with me (oh, how I'm itching to make an outrageous BS story about logistics of that happening!). This also means I didn't have that much time or energy to prepare a well-thought post...
First of all, we have a new OST – for FOLLOW YOUR HEART - and it's so awww! Interesting thing is that it's a wordplay galore – both characters used mean “heart” and together it becomes “Heart's longing/Longing heart”, as in “heart reaching to another heart”, I guess. Chinese can be so poetic when it wants to! Also lyrics are filled with “yan” and “xin” - like leads names AND drama's title. Usually I go with another translator's subbed videos, but this time I liked a different take on the text more, so here we are:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XSC-FnWfBA
Since we already in romantic mood, let's go for a few more love songs – like this old cover of ACROSS THE OCEAN TO SEE YOU drama's theme song. Seems like a popular track to cover btw – must be The Angst in it I cannot translate, but thankfully he delivers rather clearly anyway)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IpR1-Igy38
And another cover – of “I really love you”. Not sure how I feel about him serenading in THAT hat, but he's lucky he's still cute even with it on and I'm a shallow girl after all... Song sounds a bit old school – in a good way – or is it just me?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRZ4bO-U3B8
There's never too much romantic angst, right? Certainly not in his interpretation – well, when he's not all smiles while dramatically singing a really sad ballad. So troll of him, bless))) Title is “Even if you don't love me, it's fine” - guess someone can't relate to such loser-ish mindset...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPjJqnkb7sk
I wanted to round today up with an interesting cover where he mixes a song in English and it's Chinese remake, but the video was tragically laggy, it's just not proper to share *sigh* Alright, how about two tracks with opposite moods instead? “Never leave/Never give up” first:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuXrvYMWozw
And “Forget it” second – simple and harsh, I love it))) Why he's dressed like high schooler tho – was it college entrance exams season or what?

Bonus: I still haven't found a truly satisfying compilation showcasing the beauty of his eyes – cnetz really have no taste, grrr! - but this is the next best thing after months of digging, so... I'll even forgive the heresy of covering his mole (one of – couldn't erase the other one, ha!) – I think it was deliberately done by makeup artist because he's playing an android (to be precise, futuristic security robot Xiao Ning with laser vision LOL) here. Still looks good – not as good as his goth techno-vampire/cyberpunk wizard styling in latest episode of the same show, but we'll
drool overtalk about that in detail next time, don't worry^^https://x.com/Jang12474049/status/1804507849529405926

When I was 25, a loooong time ago, I wasn't smart enough to ask for advice; and if I had, I probably would have disregarded it anyways. Good on you for asking. So maybe you already know the answer to this: always, try to be open to hearing what others are saying to you. In other words, try stay on "receive" and not "send".
Easy words of advice, but hard to live by. If you can do that, you'll be way smarter than me by the time you reach your 3rd quarter of a century.

Oh, and I'll add one piece of advice my good mother gave us "girls" when we were young teens. Don't gossip.
Don't gossip at work. Don't gossip among your friends. Don't hang out with people who gossip; just maintain your distance.
It was really good advice, and I repeated that to my own children. Saved a lot of heartache over the years.

Advice #1: Life gets better and better. With every wrinkle (25 is when you officially start creating the wrinkles that show up later), comes a triumph. You only need to look for it and add it to your box of achievements. Other boxes might look heavier, especially the ones that hold disappointment, but the box holding those little triumphs matter the most so cherish it.
Advice #2: Don't take injustice lying down, but also don't hold on to grudges if you can. It's not worth it.
Advice #3: Keep yourself open to new ideas, new adventures, new experiences. Not just rest of 20s, but way way beyond that. Not for nothing they say 40s is the new 20s....

At that age I really wanted to spend time hanging out with friends all the time instead of going to visit my grandmother. But a lot of those friends turned out to be fair weather friends who were only for hanging out. So I hope you can be discerning in choosing who to spend your precious time with. You can spend years eating out and having fun with people who end up disappearing when you go through something difficult (for example, death of a parent). So spend more time with solid people, the kind of people that take care of those around them. And spend more time with grandparents having fun new experiences with them instead of just the same old dinner and watching TV. Treat them as friends, be curious about their past, do fun stuff together that they haven't done before. Grandparents are one of the few people who just adore us for apparently no reason. As you get older, that kind of unconditional love is almost impossible to find again. Of course, you'll still want to spend most of your time with friends hanging out and going to cafes and movies, etc, but know that most of them would not be there for you in the event of a tragedy. Most people just do not have that kind of compassion and empathy. So I hope you can make friends with wise and mature people and be able to learn from them while hanging out. 25 is young but also an adult and it's a good time to start building and strengthening existing community, learning how to reach out and care for each other. If there's someone in the hospital, take time to visit them and cheer them up. If someone experiences a loss, cook a casserole and bring it over. In the end, all we have is each other. And by doing stuff like this, you have less time to watch dramas. Save the drama watching for when you're a bored housewife or retiree. There will be time for that later on, but you're only 25 once.

I am so impressed that you are asking for advice I hope you had some great advice from the people who know you well and will celebrate your special day with you.
I would offer two sources of information that help to enjoy life and create the systems to build the future you want to enjoy:
Read Atomic Habits by James Clear if you have not already read it because it explains why systems are better than goals and how to do small things that lead to success and overcome the barriers you will encounter along the way. Then look into whether the Atoms app will help you track your progress.
Read the 2nd edition of the book I will teach you to be rich by Ramit Sethi and look into the FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) movement there are various books, podcasts etc. Both these approaches to taking control of your finances help you to plan your own approach to money management that will help you prevent your older self being stuck in a job just because you need the money.
Finally, if you are a woman look into your health as there are so many things we take for granted in our twenties and thirties that if we planned ahead would make our forties onwards soooooo much easier yet NO ONE talks about it until it’s too late.
Happy birthday when it comes 🥳

yes very solid advice regarding good habits and finance. especially about health, specifically women's healthy. a very good reason not to skip meals is that it can contribute to gallstones in your late 30's-40's. Gallstones can take 10-20 years to form, and favor women due to hormones, so that's something to be aware of. Gallstones are incredibly painful and to have gallbladder removed is costly, painful, time consuming and full of risks. In general, abdominal surgery is very risky including c-sections. I can talk more but I'll leave it at that for now. I skipped meals all the time in my 20's and also binged on my favorite foods like ice cream, chips, etc. Try to stick to the recommended serving size of fat. And try to exercise more, 10,000 steps per day for example. If you take care of these three aspects, you will lower risk of gallbladder surgery when you get to ajumma's age. that surgery really took me out and it took months to recover, plus there are so many risks that I have to live with. I mention gallstones to you because women (assuming you are female) have higher risk of having gallbladder removed than men.

Hi, beanies de mi corazón!
I hope you had a lovely week! 🖤
I had a very stressful week but in a good way? For some reason, all my favorite shows decided to gang up on me this week.
I like my shows real and messy—like myself— but even too much of your favorite thing is bad. Especially if your taste is bit toxic. 😂
I'm grateful for having Deer Lobsters as a breather in the middle of the week! 😉
And tonight I have to continue my journey of beautiful pain, so I decided to insert Cinderella's finale in the middle of it. I have three shows waiting to destroy me.
I hope I survive the weekend of darkness (in Hagwon's case this is literal. ISTC this show gets harder to watch not only mentally but visually. My eyes hurt PDnim). However, I don't want any of these shows too end. 😥 Like what's there for the second half of 2024?
I only wait for new seasons (because I already know the show is good), and never pay attention to other stuff.
But everyone just dropped everything on me this month, so what's left?
I hope kdramaland brings surprises for us.
Anyway, have a lovely weekend beanies!

I hope you made it through the challenges of your drama watch schedule it sounds like the first half of the year has finally given you something to enjoy.
Have you read DB summer read? The sense of wonder has a PD perspective on K dramas and it’s fascinating to read about the tropes and structure of dramas.

If I find the book I'll give it a try! But I can't promise anything since I only become a fast reader when I get immediately hoocked.

It's missing Weak Hero Class 1 hours again haha
And since I was thinking about it, I thought of 2 things in particular. 1) it really is amazing when the cast is a perfect match for a project and 2) it's interesting how drama bullies can fall into different tiers for me.
Regarding the perfect casting, I thought of how many of the things and touches that made Ahn Suho so many people's favorite were adlibs or chosen by the actor such as when he's teaching Si Eun's self defense tips and he makes Si Eun hit his cheeks or Su Ho's pink bunny pillow. Then there's his vibe when he doesn't back down (also saw this a bit in Twinkling Watermelon). He can play affable and chill but also like he can fight if he really needs to (and win).
Regarding drama bullies, I was actually thinking of 3 different dramas: WHC1, The Uncanny Counter, and High School Return of a Gangster. I don't really know how to explain how they seem to come off differently. All are obviously bad and unlikable but it's also a bit different. For example in High School Return, so much of the time I was just struck by just how much they were dumbasses with no foresight. They really reminded me of kids. WHC1, I thought alot of things haha. They were cowards, they were examples of insecurity, inferiority, and follower complexes. With The Uncanny Counter, they kinda seem like stereotypical bullies (just wanna harass others weaker than them for "reasons")

I was watching koreans react to "things only guys/girls would understand" videos and oh man, the range haha
You have women who don't get guy or girl things, guys who don't get guy or girl things and it just comes across as if they are just so innocent and pure haha
(Honestly, I didn't know some of the things only girls would understand memes either haha)0
Also made me think of how weird it is to think idols and celebrities do these same things haha

9TAILEDVIXEN'S THOUGHTS IN THE FINAL WEEK OF JUNE 2024:
(A) Rape Culture Never F***king Ends, Does It?
Steven van de Velde, a convicted child rapist who only served 12 months of his 4-year sentence, has qualified for The Netherlands' men's volleyball team.
WTF is wrong with the Dutch government, the Dutch Olympics Committee? He should not have even been allowed to compete in qualifiers!
But it seems that winning an international ball game is more important than punishing a pedophile rapist.
Since the powers that be aren't gonna make him withdraw, I reckon the next best thing is for his fellow athletes to shun him.
And do note that women and POCs are never given this type of grace - the type that cishet men (especially those of the Mayonnaise complexion) receive time and again.

(B) This Week in Korean Women's News
1. Row brews over Italian city's plan to modify inscription on 'comfort women' statue
A Korean civic group announced earlier this week that the statue will be erected in Stintino, a city on the Italian island of Sardinia, on Saturday (local time), and an official unveiling ceremony will take place on the same day.
That would be the first statue of "comfort women," a Japanese euphemism for sex slaves who were forced to work at Japanese military brothels during World War II, to be set up in Italy and the 14th outside of Korea.
But the statue is potentially stirring up a fresh row after Stintino Mayor Rita Vallebella said her city is considering replacing the inscription so that it will show both the stances of South Korea and Japan on the sexual slavery issue, according to news reports and civic group officials.

2. Defector publishes novel reflecting the steely side of women in North Korea
“The Woman Who Stole the Sun” — Seol’s first, Korean-language novel published last year — centers on an ordinary housewife whose life is turned upside down after the catastrophic collapse of the North’s centrally planned economy in the late 1990s. Bom-soon endures enormous hardships like famine, starvation, imprisonment, deaths in the family, violence by state officials as well as an abusive husband and everyday oppression under the totalitarian regime. But she manages to survive and even thrive by learning the rules of the harsh and opportunistic new world — like many women who abandoned the traditional ideal of an obedient housewife and eventually led North Korea's transformation to a nascent, quasi-market economy.
Despite being fiction, the novel also offers a glimpse into how women in North Korea emerged from the ashes of the old system to become a driving force for many economic, social and cultural changes in the country today.

So, I have recently joined and I just wanted to know how the site works. If there is a drama that has been recapped a long time ago, and all the comments are from many years ago, what is the best way to restart a conversation about the drama? If I favorited a drama, do I get notifications of a particular type of post? It seems like I don't get notifications unless I post and someone replies. What is the best way to find like minded people to talk about a drama that impacted me?

I think the best way to do that is to write something on your fan wall (there is a space to "post" text, pictures or video urls ij your profile). Anyone can see your recent posts on the "Beanies" page. Like-minded people can always jump in (or you can jump in to react on their posts 😅).
About the notifications, unfortunately, that's what they are limited to. There is a quite useless function to "follow" someone, which won't do anything. However, you can always tag someone by mentioning them using @ (followed by username, which you can type in or choose from the list of beanies that DB will suggest once you enter someone's initials).
Finding "like-minded" people will take some time 😉. But you can always jump in whenever, wherever you want. Have fun on DB!

Also, to bypass the 200 character limit on your post, compose them in a separate notes/ text editing app, and then right click to "paste" on your fan wall. There's a lot more you can do, including embedding gifs and screenshots (that you have saved on some hosting site) between your text, or bold or italicise text simply by using html tags.

This. It took me a week to figure this out lol! Thanks to @attiton for her step by step guide that really helped.
@mreverything If you have trouble on this, just tag one of us. I create my blurb on google docs complete with the html tags. That way if you get cut off (even when replying to a post which also has a word count limit but a lot more than 200 allowed on the fan wall) you won't lose your work.

Like Anne already mentioned, fanwall is a way to go. Now, you could invite people to join in, and as fan wall posts do not appear in notifications, use the tag system if someone wants to participate in the drama you are interested in discussing. You could also post here in the open topic with a link and people might join.
Some of us have recently started community watch of dramas and it has had a fabulous response. One of our community watch drama went up in charts of favourite show this year dramatically. So basically these posts give other beanies the incentive of company to watch a drama. Right now we are watching Just Between Lovers/Rain or Shine.

@mreverything
As @Anne18 says, your fanwall is a great place to start a conversation. Lots of beanies are watching earlier shows as well as current ones at any given time. There have been some community fanwall watches for older shows, starting last year (for Mad Dog, which was tons of fun) - and thanks, @attiton and @HopefulRomantic for this fabulous idea!
The Saturday "What We're Watching" posts are the best place to get a sense of what older dramas people are watching and who might be interested in chatting more about them. If you see someone mention a show you're interested in, respond in that thread. You could also tag them on your own fanwall post (hover your mouse over their display name to get the correct username). Not everyone loves to be tagged, but folks will let you know if they want to opt out of that.
Favoriting a show just adds it to the list of "My Shows" under your profile but does nothing else - no notifications.
And welcome to Dramabeans! It's nice to have you here.

PS @mreverything
Links are to examples of how the conversation gets started and what a fanwall watch looks like - I've only been here a couple of years, so I don't pretend to know whether people have done something similar in the past. The fanwall is notoriously hard to search. But you've come to the right place!

I found a reel on IG that validates k-dramas dramatic treatment of cuts. Maybe it’s just a trope or maybe the koreans are onto something here - cue glass skin adverts..

I'm finally back to my Korean drama era! Have not watched a lot of Korean dramas in the past three years as I was watching more C-dramas in these three years. Decided to take a leap of faith to delve into Korean dramas again and currently catching up on all the popular dramas in these three years.
And I'm also back on Dramabeans after a number of years. Was reading past recaps on Kim Nam Gil's dramas (obsessed with him after watching Island - disappointing drama but his face is 💯💯💯) and recalled that I saw Shark recaps before back in 2013. Rude shock when I realised it was 11 years ago. Goodness gracious.
I guess dramas like Delightful Girl Chun Hyang, Princess Hours, My Girl, Lovers in Paris, My Name is Kim Sam Soon are antiques in the museum...
