In Korea, it is called a “snack movie,” a short film shown in theaters or at festivals. Actor and newly minted production agency CEO Son Seok‐gu is releasing a 12‐minute film, NIGHT FISHING, for the theater admission fee is only 1,000 won. He is returning to the screen with unique directing and story with no dialogue which is set entirely inside a car. One can say this sounds like an experimental film.

Then, I guess this could be considered an “appetizer movie.” TAROT’s three-episode film release is today in Korea. All original reports had it as a 7-episode web series, but now that it is 3 story bundle for theater release. The producer/director is pushing back on the apparent change in distribution. “The film is a hybrid between a drama series and a film, which was initially planned out,” according to director. The producer denies that the film is just an advertisement for the entire series. “It was planned from the start as a mid-form series, aiming to kill two birds with one stone by creating it into both a film and drama series,” he said at this week’s premiere press conference. In any event, it appears the studio is trying to get two bites at the consumer apple.

It is strange time in K-entertainment. People are going back to movie theaters the TAROT producers must think they can grab an $4/viewer admission fee share instead of or in addition to a flat license fee from a local mobile platform.

In life, timing is everything.

Opening day for NIGHT FISHING drew 6,724 admissions ($7,815) on 25 screens. TAROT drew 6,015 admissions ($36,571) on 128 screens. Both films were clobbered by the release of INSIDE OUT 2 which drew 242,062 people and 76% of box office receipts.

Bookish Beanies, I read a book recently that I thought might be of interest to others. I remembered a post a few weeks (months?) back in which someone suggested a What We're Reading or some such thread. Where can I find it? Or was I imagining it?

@reply1988 I thought it might be on your fan wall, but I didn't see it. Tho phew, I appreciated the reminder about our July DB Bookclub read The Sense of Wonder. I'll be there @lapislazulii

Oops. Messages crossed. I just replied to you on WWW. 😊

The Fox Bride is actually set in China and Japan tho they end up heading to South Korea at the end. It’s very fitting as the fox spirit myth is shared across borders. But it’s not as good a fit for a Korean focused book club, more for fans of the mythology and historical fiction in general.

The hype around Byeon Woo Seok seems to have reached fever pitch, tvN has even sold the broadcast rights to Lovely runner to multiple broadcasters around the world. He is a bonafide star.

I think Kim Hye-Yoon deserves congratulations for that as much as BWS.

And there is nothing new in Kdramas being sold in other countries.

Required fields are marked *

I never said it was anything new either, but its obvious that the considerable hype and media attention around BWS is why distributors took an interest in a drama that only peaked at 6% in viewesrship in its home country.

As for Kim Hye-yoon, its basically "Extraordinary You" all over again, she does the hard work and her less impressive male co-stars reap all the benefits, it is what it is sadly......

He’s going to Milan for Prada and will most likely be walking the runway too. His fan meeting is adding more countries because the demand is huge and his Seoul fan meeting has a seating of over 2500 people and there are still 700,000 in waiting and scalpers are reselling at 7000 won ticket for over 5 million won. He’s surpassed fever pitch at this point. Sadly he’ll be missing out on the reward vacation because his schedule is over booked. He did 130 media interviews for Korea alone and still has to do his overseas interviews. They had to call the police to do crowd control at the airport because it was literally a mob despite 3 massive bodyguards to protect him. He’s the syndrome and not the drama at this point. Only Lee Minho has seen this kind of overnight superstardom off his first lead role.

I don’t think the investors or fan girls care at all about that. Nobody is calling it the Kim Hyeyoon or Im Sol syndrome. Nor is it called the Lovely Runner syndrome. It’s called the Ryu Sungjae and Byeon Wooseok syndrome. That’s what investors are seeing and that’s what they care about. Money talks after all.

Unless you're labeling career journalists as his fans. I'm just telling you what the media headlines and celebrities are calling it including Jhope from BTS. I would assume they know better.

2

He’s also getting the Kpop idol treatment as his sasengs booked out the hotel he was staying at in Taiwan and booked cabs to follow him around. His song Sudden Shower keeps climbing on Billboard and it seems like his agency is planning his fan meetings more like mini concerts going forward. He’s got a very bright future ahead of him that’s for sure. He can be both and actor and an idol if he wants. Have you seen his July cover for W Korea with Cartier? That’s probably his new endorsement.

Lovely Runner is starting to veer into overhyped territory to me. I truly do not understand why people latched onto him the way they have. I mean sure he was cute but it's not that serious.

Seems like a double edged sword to me; it's great that he is getting recognition and interest but with that comes the expectations and entitlements from fans and companies.

Tall, good looking and doesn’t have to serve in the military anymore can be a deadly combination. Plus his real life personality is supposed to be very similar to the character and he is big on fan service. Even his past costars like Park Bogum and Gong Seungyoon are fawning over him. He’s received high praise from the industry and reporters and has zero scandals in the 10 years he’s been acting.

Happy for him. He is a good actor, and I am surprised it took him so long. However, I wonder if he can sustain it. I watched him in one drama and one movie and he was unremarkable (I didn't recall him at all). Real stars seldom wait a decade to catapult to the top. But then, when stars shine, they shine.

Happy Friday, Beanies! It suddenly gotten very hot here, which makes me feel doubly bad for poor LYN suffering on ADWAD filming set from both thick fur-lined robes (they're filming winter scenes mostly for whatever reason) and plot that just doesn't let his character catch a break – he's been stabbed, beaten, stabbed again, slapped, poisoned (?), forced to kneel in the snow barely dressed (so TTJ-core), whipped and finally dumped by FL... Just another Tuesday in cdramaland, but let him live a bit, dammit! Lighthearted romcom, they said Oh, and he also caught a very real summer cold – this walking disaster! That's how we got today's theme – intense emotional singing. Not all these songs are about love, I suppose, but as long as he's suffering through it, this counts^^

The first song is a mass destruction weapon in his voice – not only he's obsessed enough to perform it again and again, but the way he goes about it is just... Bloody. Extra. Every damn time. Actually, he gets more and more unhinged into it with every new video I watched, it's borderline alarming. These lyrics must be striking a chord or two, right, Ning-ge? Whomever he's “Suddenly missing you” so intensely is one lucky fool))) With subs so we can understand his heartbreak better:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CQqkiK7_Ko

In case you didn't believe me – take 2 (I've found like 15 20 more and decided to stop at that for my own sanity). Btw, that was quite a look – just as extra as his delivery, hah! Would've love to know what he's joking about in the beginning...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qrrdF4webw

Another one of “mad passion, mad fashion” variety - “Wrong man” (technically “person”, idk if lyrics specify further):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOyqPQme6Pk

And some more! He never goes wrong with glasses, but this overall look is sooo him, awww))) Song is called “Goodbye, just a stranger” - yep, subtlety of a brick in the face is our motto today:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abjdNI07m6Y

I don't quite understand how that streaming app from his old days worked – those pop-ups are what, likes? donations? rating system as in karaoke? - but he seems happy getting them, so all is good. Song is “White plum/Plum whiteness”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hwkVFCYttY

I may have chosen a little too broadly – when he did NOT sing with all his emotions into it? Hah, joke's on me then))) But this one certainly gets him - and our giant human snowman is sooo melting in that summer heat, just like we are now, but that's not important. OK, maybe just a bit, for disrespectfully looking purposes... Song is called “Stardom”:

If you think I'll ever stop my “he's the prettiest in blue” agenda – nope, I won't, because he does! Look how cute and hyper he is, being his own dancer and all! Plus there's quite a bit of rap – in rather melo fashion (did he just make up his own lyrics? he could!). Btw, I learned a new word thank to him from this song being called called “Lesion(s)” - basically “damage(s)” if you're just as clueless as me:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_P3OfZ4VuM

And, finally, the song I am obsessed with myself – half of these views must be from me. Title is “Xiaofang”, which literally means “little fragrance”, so should be something along “Little flower/flower-like beauty” lines, but I think it's also a girl's name... Yunno, poetry *shrugs* Pls kindly ignore him breaking the character by grinning like a gremlin:

Once more with a feeling since he was too unserious in the previous vid:

That's why smart people avoid filming costume dramas in summer altogether, but since our boy clearly never heard the word "vacation" in his whole life, he's bound to keep sweating and falling sick from it...

Maybe romcom tag simply means all this suffering will eventually end with happiness and love? *tries to be hopeful against her better judgement*

3

@jillian Amen to that! Based on his somewhat haggard appearance, I'd say he needs a day off asap to sleep it out of his system, but I'm doubtful he will. Last year he filmed a modern show in peak hot months, so even he himself admitted to forget how bad it can get)))

You're gloriously generous with your opinion on cdramas happy ending statistics lol! I'll still cling to "romcom" tag with hope - given that it's a transmigration into fictional story plot, ending is all but guaranteed to be wtf-one, but it shouldn't be standard bleak and tragic at least. There is a modern world part, where he plays himself hotshot actor - this one has a decent potential for survival a non-depressing conclusion.

Happy Friday, @gikata! As always, Thank you!

Stunningly looking men being tortured and killed IS what cdramas exist for))) But yes, things are kinda getting out of hand there - we were promised silly 4th wall breaking fun, but all I see from many set leaks is his character having ANYTHING but a fun time. And now he's not really having fun offscreen either thanks to that nasty cold... He has a live performance scheduled for Monday, btw, but looks and sounds not exactly in shape for that, ouch(((

He LOVES his glasses, and the louder - the better. You think this is extra? For ANLE promos he once donned a freaking monocle^^

Good morning everyone,

Before, I go back to lurker mode. Yes, I am alive and well. I am finally be able to relax and not think for a while. Last two week, has been busy with real life. As, May 30 was my oldest son graduate his Catholic High School. Last Saturday of June 8. It was my younger sister officially engagement party with her Korean Fiancé. From what she told me. She is not going to wear Hanbok. Due to her fiancé is Americanized Korean. My mom is happy he is catholic at least. However, for a long time, she did not like him of his career and nationality. Due to, she expects my younger sister married a Vietnamese and catholic guy who is a doctor or lawyer. My younger sister is a dentist.

Therefore, it was nice party. Me and kids come late as my autistic daughter did not like big crowd. We came late afternoon and hang out with my family of aunts, uncles and cousins.

In another news, my youngest sister is engage too with her Americanized Jewish fiancé. We do not know when they will have officially engagement party yet. I know my younger sister will get married in April 25, 2025. That is about it. Oh, I forget to mention my youngest sister and her fiancé is like main lead couple of Lovely Runner. She is short and he is tall guy.

In other news, I just watch The Lovely Runner and Moving. Both of them are really good. Right now, I am watching The Double. I know they will recut it the previous episodes and new episodes to fit the 45 minutes. Due to it is a web novel. I am not sure of episode 5 and 6 as it is 47 minutes. I am already on episode 11 of The Double.

@ally-le My youngest son is smart boy. One of his friend is a genius/prodigy kid. From what I talk to his mom. She told me that he is upset because all the teachers in Freshman honors classes hate him. Which makes me sad. His prodigy friend is really sweet guy. My youngest son is upset too because he is piss off that two of his teachers is an Honors Teacher but do not know squat about what they teach them. When, they ask questions. They even don’t know how to answer the questions the student ask them.

I have talked my friends who is in Education departments. They told me that you can’t buy intelligence. No matter what connection or money or power you have in the world. Someone will be smarter then you or they lack it even though they have go to Prestige colleges and high school. I told my son that and told my son friend mom that. Therefore, I would like to know what you and everyone think.

That is about it in real life. I am preparing my oldest son going to college. He will be close. Due to he is going to Cal State Fullerton. He is going to stay at my parent’s house and the weekend he be home. Therefore, I am happy. My youngest son is taking Geometry Honors which is a lot of money but makes no sense that it is only 3 days of the week and it is only one hour in class. The homework and quizzes online. This is for both summer school session. Oh well, I just hope...

I do not know how the SK enlistment goes but I feel like it seems to have changed in recent years ESPECIALLY when it came to BTS. I could totally be wrong; it's not like I keep up with kpop or idols (or even knew who they were until a couple of years ago).

But it seemed as if in the past, when celebrities did their service, they were genuinely out of the spotlight for about 2 years and they were just kinda "normal" guys (aside from the instances of them being taken advantage of, harassed, etc). They supposedly didn't make money other than their soldier's salary. (Which is why some entertainer tried to evade his service (at least in part); he said he was the only one making money for his company and couldn't leave it during for that time)

Yet nowadays, especially with BTS, it was like things were different. I can't stress enough that I could be wrong about the timeframe or whether this stuff has happened in the past.

It seems the default service time is closer to a year & a half than 2 years. The BTS guys were always having articlces mentioned about how they were exemplary soldiers. I could've sworn at least one of the guys had music being pushed.
Even Lee Do Hyun (is that his name? The guy from The [Good] Bad Mother) was featured on some award show (I think via a video feed or something after he won an award). A variety show also happened to be filmed where he was stationed and he was featured in that a little.

Like I said, I don't know if this is the norm but it just seems like this have been changing for celebrity enlistments.

Required fields are marked *

Not exactly - actual military law regarding that did NOT change in at least a decade, despite all BTS's company and government best attempts - backlash would be too much, in the end they didn't dare. But there's now a covid loophole, so to speak - when last few months of service soldiers are sent home while still being "on duty" theoretically, so this makes it look like they are out earlier than before.

Regarding content releases and public appearances - the former is allowed if it was filmed/recorded prior the guy in question enlisting (idk how they resolve money aspect - delayed payment?) and artists are also allowed to attend things like award shows during their official days off (but still have to wear uniform, I believe). PHS received his Rookie Movie Actor trophy for JUROR8 mid-service this way - there were even photos somewhere here on DB iirc.

It may also simply be an drastically increased role of sns in celebs life giving a confusing impression of situation.

BTS also staggered enlistment and something or the other released before and after for all seven of them, making it look like they are always in news. Most of their singles released hit top of the charts and that also kept them in news constantly. It has been very smartly done.

I recently learned of the term/concept "girl crush" and of Lee Hyori haha
I had seen here in some clips and complilations saying how she was a "savage queen" and she is the only one who can scare Yu Jae Seok and Kim Jong Kook but I'd never seen her as an idol until recently. She is so wow haha

I could totally see why folks would be intimidated by her but then she's also so cool that you can admire and wanna be like her. Especially for these newer generation idols. When I saw how she spoke and carried herself, I kept thinking she would be such a good mentor for young women & young idols.

Lee Hyori always had a cool, rebellious and brash personality. She was a bankable idol who did several very popular variety shows. But at her peak, she moved to Jeju to chill; only occasionally doing CFs and music releases. After doing 6 months of hosting a KBS music guest show, which she mentored many young singers, she decided to move later this year back to Seoul. I expect her to do more projects in the future.

Do actors tend to switch between lead & second male lead?
I recently saw High Society and it stuck me that in it Sung Joon was the lead actor while Park Hyung Sik was the SML. Fast forward and I think Hyung Sik typically plays lead roles and Sung Joon plays SML

Am I totally wrong about this?

Can actors switch between being a lead and second lead? The only example I have an actor who is typically a lead but was billed second is Lee Joon Gi and I think it could be argued he was definitely more of a co lead plus he was a replacement so it makes sense he was billed second.

In a webtoon I read, an actor was HIGHLY offended when he made an ass of himself on a variety show and started getting second lead roles rather than lead roles.

0

Required fields are marked *

Short answer is HELL NO. Long answer is that once first lead status is achieved, most people don't go back to supporting roles as long as they can help it. But some still do, to a various degree of success - this is a VERY risky move, because once you start accepting second lead roles again you may very well see a decrease of first lead offers... Classism is very much alive in that field. Usually it's either ambitious young actors humbling themselves by playing second fiddle to veterans/much bigger stars to improve their resume with guaranteed blockbuster project OR actors who failed at maintaining bankable status as first leads.

Latter is Sung Joon's case - he got to lead roles far too early and never quite solidified himself at that (PHS acted full waltz circles around him in HIGH SOCIETY, it was borderline painful to watch at times), both ratings-wise and regarding his performance. Not sure if he hoped to rejuvenate his career with that or already accepted things as they are and just wants to stay employed - some actors TRY to climb back up again, but very few manage to do so.

RE: LJG you're talking about ARAMUN, are you? If he officially WAS second billed there - which I doubt - it's only because SSK is a former child actress who debuted first. It's a polite thing to do to give up first billing somewat if your equally plot-important costar is sunbae. But in terms of seniority JDG tops both of them combined, despite being SML/main antagonist... Anyway, it's a bit complicated in this case, but I can assure you that LJG was never less than main male lead/co-ML in a drama post-MY GIRL. And I sincerely hope he'll maintain this status for a good decade or two more before eventually moving on to play scheming baddies and main leads dads.

Your phrasing always makes me laugh haha
I think you're the one who said the male lead of Princess Hours was "as gorgeous as he was wooden" haha

Now the "waltzing circles" just has me in stitches

I didn't actually finish or pay attention to High Society, I had it on in the background haha
The lead couple especially the woman just... ahh, just... ahh
Haha

I much more liked the second couple and once again it made me wonder if I should watch more Park Hyung Sik projects. He does heart eyes so well and has such a nice smile.

Regarding Joon Gi, he was billed second in the credits and I *think* he was seated second during interviews. But I don't know much that means cause even the actress who was in S1 of Arthdal Chronicles was listed and seated 4th (I think)

Yep, that was me, thanks for your kind reception)))

HIGH SOCIETY was a very badly written show trying to bite way more than it could chew, but casting of both main leads was especially terrible - these roles should've gone to strong dramatic performers capable of doing such melo-heavy premise justice and not just two people mainly known for being tall and hot. While second leads, who pretty much existed in their own Cinderella-like youth romcom show, managed their part far more gracefully. Not in the least by looking convincingly in love unlike main OTP... But script was the main culprit all along.

Not all PHS's dramas are great, but he's usually good or beyond that in most of them. We're planning HAPPINESS group rewatch somewhere next month - it's one of his bests and fairly recent too, so if you can stomach "zombie" theme and are interested...

Yep, I think he was just being polite to his sunbae costars - not the new arrangement in his case, he did a lot of dramas with veteran actors. MDL lists JDG first, so first billing went to him? Makes sense, it was always ensemble cast project with two main OTPs - good one and villainous one. SJK in S1 was hyped up a bit more as protagonist, but he was freshly after DOTS raging success back then so it's understandable.

Even though I madly love Happiness, I watched it only one and a half times - first time I watched halfway through before my family joined so we restarted. Zombies are not my thing though I wholeheartedly love this these zombies...

It depends. I think there are full-time actors who will take parts just to keep acting so there are no holes in their resume. I also think there is a hierarchy in the industry. If an actor works their way up to bigger roles, they will get a shot at a lead part in a series or drama special. If they carry the role well and the show is successful, they are deemed FL or ML material. If the show fails, the actor may be labeled as not having the star power to lead a production and will fall back to second tier status.

A recent trend is to rely more on an actor's popularity than skills in order to get investor production money.

I didn't watch it but this reminds me of the actor Extraordinary Attorney Woo & Queen of Tears. He's been a supporting character for years and after EAW, he was given the male lead in QOT and apparently, he didn't seem like a leading man.

Which now leads me to: What makes someone leading man quality?

I'm guessing you meant Queen of Divorce. I prefer to refer to it as Amazing Troubleshooters☺️.

To your question: Star power. That is the current state of K-entertainment save for the movies/Chungmuro section. At least that is what I've noticed to safe confidence level.

Back to your question. Not just star power, but one that can bring in the monetary investments. So I'll say star power + massive fandom.

Star power is never to be equated with competence. Thankfully there still exists a bountiful handful of actors and actresses who have both the competence(major factor in their casting) and star power(minor factor in their casting) required to lead a drama.

Another factor that makes leading man quality is a scenario whereby the screenwriter or director or both, are bankable reasons for a drama to air. In cases like these, you realize that the actors they cast in their shows as leads are not just star power actors. So in a way, the influence of the writer or PD makes anyone they feel fits into their story a leading man or woman quality. For example Noh Hee-kyung, Park Hae-young, Lee Seo-yeon, Ahn Pan-seok.

This is so interesting/fascinating to me because sometimes the actors or shows I watch, I wouldn't really think of them as having huge fandoms that would guarantee a likely success. For example, Twinkling Watermelon - I guess because the leads are fairly young but it also has such an indie vibe haha. Crash- I do know of the lead actor from other projects but he isn't someone I would consider a huge star or that I would think has a big fandom.

Yoon Chan Young, another young actor but I know of him being the lead in 3 things so far.

I don't know many people by name but this is interesting to me. I do know that even if there is star power attached to a show, it can still fail (ex: that drama with Park Bo Gum & Song Hye Kyo) yet it wasn't bad enough to diminish their power?

1

@britney what exactly do you mean by fail? I don't know what sort of fail you're referring to. But here is the kind of fail that is guaranteed from their star power: investment. Their names as actors on the script does not fail to bring in investments and PPL deals in their tons.

The movie can fail, turn out to be a total flop/mess in writing, direction and execution, or the said star power's acting is whack and ruins the entire production . But their names do not fail to bring in sponsorships.

0

Okay so Encounter did not fail even if it didn’t meet expectations and yes as @jerrykuvira said the name Song Hyekyo and Park Bogum will always bring in investors and assure the production houses that they can sell the dramas at high prices even if the ratings eventually don’t meet expectations since dramas are always pre sold. In fact channels refuse to air dramas unless they have been sold to a global online service for simulcast before hand. The other reason actors like Yoon Chanyoung get cast in lead roles is because they are cheap. A drama full of rising stars like Watermelon and Hierarchy is cheap to produce since the actors don’t get paid much and the majority of the funds can be spent on the actual drama production. For Watermelon the writer was a very famous writer and hence her fees covered the bigger expense. If a drama has actors with massive star power, big name writer and popular director then the budget goes through the roof. Like the upcoming Song Hyekyo and Gong Yoo drama which is expected to cost 80 billion won or the Lee Minho and Gong Hyojin drama that cost over 50 billion won. The latter is stuck in purgatory since nobody can afford to buy it plus the post production is taking longer than usual. Moving had the same dilemma as it cost over 40 billion won and it took almost 2 years before Disney released it. More and more star writers, directors and actors are moving Netflix or Disney originals instead of tv dramas because they demand massive salaries that only streaming platforms can afford to pay. TVN is the only channel that can afford them because it’s run by CJENM which is a huge conglomerate with very deep pockets. So coming back to the point once star power is established to a certain level it can never be diminished it only stagnates and investors are willing to take a risk on these people because returns are always guaranteed even if those returns might be slightly lower than expectations. It’s like the stock market you can always rely on Samsung or Apple even when they have some bad days.

1

@jerrykuvira I've never seen the drama but I saw it in a video that said it had disappointing ratings or something. I saw somewhere that The Glory was like a positive turning point for Hye Kyo cause she had been in some unsuccessful dramas by that point.

0

@britney a failure in ratings hardly in any way affects an actor or actress's star power.

0

QOD had fair ratings but didn't do anything for Kang Ki Young. I am not sure he will be billed as ML in the future which is quite sad. But then he was really not charismatic in an already mediocre show. Oh Min Seok inhaled everybody's oxygen.

2

It's very risky for actors to accept a second role if they played first ones before because they're not sure to get ML roles again after that.

Some actors did it because the writer or the PD was famous like Yoo Yeon-Seok in Mr Sunshine or Kim Seo-Ho in Start-Up.

I didn't know Kim Seon Ho was considered a leading man when he did Start Up.
Also, didn't know Yoo Yeon Seok was a leading man. The first lead role of his that I know of is the interest of love or money or whatever it's called. I know he was in Hospital Playlist but I've never seen it and I thought that was an ensemble show

Kim Seon-Ho did Catch The Ghost and Welcome to Waikiki 2 as lead (there was You Drive Me Crazy! that was tv movie or short drama, I don't remember).

Yoo Yeon-Seok did Warm and Cozy written by the sisters Hong and Dr. Romantic that did pretty well.

Also Yoo Yeon-Seok's role in Mr Sunshine was substantial, and a very interesting, multi layered one, and he was definitely more interesting than the lead. However, ML of Mr Sunshine has a massive star power, so playing a SML in such a production where the role is pivotal, and is helmed by a rockstar writer director duo could be a conscious choice. Interestingly it was debut for Kim Tae Ri, and I have always wondered how talented she must have come across to be chosen as a part of this and eventually carry such a massive production on her shoulders and not break a sweat.

She was in the movie The Handmaiden that was a success in the world. It was nominated for the Palme d'or in Cannes. She was selected from 1,500 candidates to play this role.

We can reproach a lot of things to Kim Eun-sook but she writes great second roles like in Goblin.

Ah! Now that makes sense. I always wondered. Thank you for that snippet. I always skipped Handmaiden but now I am going to add it to my list.

She stood so tall against the stalwarts and even tried her best selling the romance.

1

The simple answer is - if your male lead roles didn't produce a successful drama you might be forced to descend to second lead roles so that you can still have a job. If investors don't see the actor as bankable anymore they may have no choice but to do supporting or second lead roles. However at times actors do ensemble dramas like Squid Game or Hospital Playlist which does have its billing order but does not box them into specific lead or second lead roles. The situation you're talking about was that off a new actor breaking out through a second lead role and moving up to male lead status. For Sung Jun his career saw a demise and left him with few to no opportunities. However sometimes actors like to challenge themselves to non lead roles and take on antagonist roles instead as it gives them more material to work with and also they might be in the dubious place of trying to undergo an image change since they have been typecast. The important bit here is how diminished their star power is to make that choice or have it forced on them.

What makes star power diminish like that? Like using Sung Joon for an example, did he have a bunch of unsuccessful lead roles or did he just have a BIG unsuccessful role?

1

It’s the other way round. He never had any successful dramas to begin with just an over ambitious agency who thought his model good looks would carry him and gave him poor scripts. Star power generally diminishes have a string of flops but sometimes it stagnates before it peaks again.

This is a long shot request, but, I am FINALLY allowing myself to watch The Red Sleeve. I know I will be traumatized, but I really want to watch it and have been putting it off forever. I did the same thing with "Moonlovers SHR" and now realize that I can't find it anywhere and I don't want that to happen to TRS! So, now, I am very upset to find out that DramaBeans did not do a recap of TRS!! What am I going to do??? I did see that there was a fanwall somewhere that Beanies were discussing each episode but I can't find it. Can anyone help me? Is it still around? Thanks!

It's probably the only show I watched twice knowing the ending. The first time, I was just upset with everything happening on the screen, and then that ending - I was angry at the story, Yi Sun, the hopelessness of it. Then after a few months I calmed down and watched again. It's beautiful, really really beautiful. The show is bigger than its actors.

NOTES FROM 9TAILEDVIXEN'S 2ND WEEK OF JUNE:

1. Aerial Yoga Progress Report

I fell off the silks this week BUT the good news is that my arm strength has now developed enough that I could use my arms and hands to grip the silks to break my fall. Nothing bruised by my ego since I had classmates witnessing my fall. HA!

I can, however, do yet another variation of the Tinkerbell pose now which involves climbing up, getting silks locked around my leg, swinging backwards, removing the silks from one of my feet while using my arm to hang on, then hooking the silks around my shoulder for support and posing prettily in mid-air.

2. BTS-Mania

BTS's Jin has been discharged from the Korean military and my friends who are ARMY have been bombarding my social media feeds with everything Jin.

For anyone who missed it, this is Jin's live right after he left the army:

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!
I am late, but if I allow that to stop me from joining the OT I probably will disappear instead. I am nearly two months on the new job, and only now am I able to start experimenting with possible routines. Managing the chaos day by day has been fine, but scheduling OT and stuff was a different matter.😅
In short: the best time to be in a slump. There was either no time to get obsessed, or I was longing for my bed instead. Whenever the slump won out, I read to distract myself, and here we are now. Reading again, sleeping and relaxing during weekends, grinning because a batch of 4-5 shows is premiering as we speak!🥳

@kas61

Minnie, I just wanted to pick up on your point about Park Seo-joon. I utterly agree with you that it is very sad to see a wonderful talented leading man being reduced to a bit of exotic colour in a Hollywood movie. I understand that Song Joong-ki has been unsuccessfully auditioning in Hollywood as well. You couldn't get more handsome and charismatic leading men. It makes me sad that they feel they need to do this, that the peak of their ambition should be Hollywood. Given the quality of a lot of Hollywood's output these day, why would they bother?

Then again, you could look at what's happened to BTS. Repeated Grammy nominees but no success. I sympathise with one of the band members who rather cynically suggested that BTS get nominated and invited to perform at the Grammys to boost the show's flagging ratings (which they surely do) but with no intention of rewarding them for their achievements. And now there's word of a separate Grammys for Asia, so k-pop stars can forget about being recognised at the American Grammys.

I'm not quite sure what annoys me more -- the wonderfully talented stars of Korean stage and screen thinking they need to win over the US entertainment biz to feel like they've really made it. Or the US entertainment biz being reluctant to reward a k-pop band whose success and quality deserve it, and instead palming them off with an Asian award show.

It's really not a happy place to be. I remember how excited I had been about Park Seo Joon that finally we would have a bonafide star heading a mega project.

But no. We still are exotic creatures with great costume and bad hair.

For an artist, acknowledgement to their craft is their ultimate goal. Every orchestra wants to play in Vienna, and every artist wants to be recognised in Hollywood. I guess Hollywood is the ultimate goal only because they have the pockets to reach the audience world wide. People see Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, and perhaps that's who they want to be. I don't blame them, never mind both the stars were always othered by Hollywood, playing the same characters all their life.

Honestly, Donny Yen was such a pleasant surprise, and I was thrilled that he was not playing some kind of a caricature, and instead brought on the layered portrayal his character needed so deftly. He was the only reason I watched John Wick 4, and my word, the man is as good now as he was in his 30s.

A small thing that has been niggling me for a while - when you search for Netflix Top 10, they have this two categories: Top 10 English, and then Top 10 non-English....

Could this be because of my geographical area. Would Netflix Top 10 show up differently in say, Korea? Would it be Top 10 Korean and then Top 10 global non Korean? Can anyone confirm?
