[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Winning prizes at fairs

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Winning prizes at fairs

Your mission:

Drum up a list of all the scenes where characters win a prize at a carnival, fair, or street market. It could be a stuffed pet or a (very breakable) king carp (sorry King the Land couple), but if they’re playing games and winning prizes, it counts in this Treasure Hunt round.

Reference drama:

King the Land (Episode 6)

Oh, the snail toy that Se-hee won for Ji-ho (did he? It's a bit hazy in mind, but he adamantly kept playing the balloon popping game to win that, whether he won or not). 🐌🐌🐌

This is Because This Is Our First Life, episode 12...an episode whose first five minutes contain one of the best kisses in all of k-dramaland.

Se-hee wants to win her the snail at the street fair, for sure...but he's so bad at the game that Ji-ho basically can't stand the reflected embarrassment and offers to play the second (quite expensive) round of darts for him--he, of course, steps aside and gives her mad nodding props for her skills as she pops balloon after balloon, and she wins her own stuffed snail.

The snail plays a key role in the final episode too. I'm misting up just thinking about it.

Lol, I just went and watched the scene. So our dork who overestimates himself as a professional dart thrower (complete with the poise and the trademark Se-hee squint eye), only to be a complete embarrassment and public nuisance 😂. Then hands her over the darts at her request with "huh, what can she possibly do better than me" attitude, only to hide his face here and there, then nod it in the "Se-hee approval fashion ™".... 🤣

Going to watch the last episode to get the misty eye infection from you. Thanks! 🥺

Lol, also the way he literally pushes the toy into her hands with the jewellery box. 😂 That's one way to gift someone "lovingly"

Thanks ! I was thinking that there is a drama where FL is effortless much better than ML but did not visualize their faces until you mentionned this title.

Do claw machine scenes count? They are in literally EVERY Kdrama, and in BTIMFL too. Ma Sang-goo gives Woo Su-ji a soft toy of the anime character Pucca, saying it looks like her 😂. I can't forget the scene coz Esom really is as cute as Pucca!

Also, in episode 6 of this drama, Sang-Goo wins a plush doll in a claw machine and gives it to Soo-Ji. Struggling to maintain her cynical façade, she says she hates this sort of corny stuff and will throw it out. But then later we see she's got the doll in the backseat of her car—wearing a seatbelt!

In Taxi Driver 2, our Rainbow team wins a prize (an appliance) at the village fair (episode 3?). The prize was given by the scam team, whose bad deeds our Rainbow team is uncovering.

In The third charm, Seo Kangjoon's character wins a prize (a giant mug) at a street beer festival where he has to drink as much beer as possible. He wins the mug and empties his stomach into that mug, iirc 😂 That happens on his date with Esom's character. It must be around episode 1 and 2.

And the reason Seo Kangjoon's character spontaneously took part in that beer competition is that he had eaten spicy food and he urgently needed to drink something cold 😂

You took my treasure so I now have to look for other ones!

The Best Hit: Yoon Shi Yoon wins a smart phone by dancing his own hit song.

Scent of a Woman: Kim Sun Ah wins a necklace in a street drinking competition.

Welcome 2 Life: The whole family participate in the school fair games and win the bicycle.

He was so happy and proud that he carried that carp in his arms like a most treasured infant...didn't he? 🥹

That scene was hilarious! 👏🤣💯

But yes: The title of this prompt was a real king carp click bait, and I’m also sad to see it was already mentioned. 😆

FINE. I don't need to do anything else but watch k-dramas, right? I went to watch again.

For reference, episode 6, around the 43m30s mark.

His joy at winning is only matched by her GIANT eye-rolls at his competitiveness. 😂

3

@attiton I LOVE that she is never neither dazzled nor intimidated by him. Just love it. That giant eye-roll was so her!!

4

@attiton Oh and also for some meta fun facts, Junho is famous for being competitive! 😂 That is why this scene is extra hilarious for his long-time fans!

2

I LOVE that scene! That sense of pure achievement, coupled with a hidden sense of dependency on Sarang.

Of the few, I think this was the best episode and I remember I was still quite invested at this point.

In Run On when Ki Seon-gyeom (Im Si-wan) wants to buy a stuffed animal for Kim Woo-sik (Lee Jung-ha), his track-team hoobae who's in the hospital due to being severely beaten up by other teammates, Oh Mi-joo (Shin Se-kyung) takes him instead to an indoor arcade and demonstrates her marksmanship skills by winning Seon-gyeom a giant...stuffed, um, walrus? Maybe it's a manatee? Anyway she's good with guns.

When Seon-geyom asks Mi-joo why they couldn't just have bought the gift, she says, "Because it's always more fun when you win something."

I invite everyone over to episode three of Run On to decide what actual animal she wins for him... It's also worth it to see the clothes Im Si-wan is wearing. It's also worth it to see Lee Jung-ha receive said stuffy.

I'm in full "sell Run On mode." It never works, but, hey.

I hear you. It does serve true narrative purpose in this drama, but that doesn't mean it is for everyone.

"Because it's always more fun when you win something."

This applies to claw machines too.

In Joseon Attorney Woo Do-hwan participated in a wrestling competition in a village festival and chose flower shoes for the FL which was the third prize even though he won.

😂 Well it did have some rather fun bits. WDH was in full theatre mode but his heartfelt conversations with Bona were really meaningful and touching. Also he wore pastel hanboks first. Iykyk!! 🥳
The 2ML had a good arc and even piggybacked WDH. 😂

Yes, I remember I was fond of the SML in a show where WDH was the ML, that says somethings 😂

I have loved N (Cha Hak Yeon) is almost everything I've seen him in. Another artist who surely deserves to be the ML.

2

Also very very emotive eyes. Indeed for anyone to be memorable in front of WDH they need to be much more than just good.

Btw I have amnesia about the kiss!! 🤣🤣

💯 if you're interested in a ML whose default mode is OTT but is more of a detective than the titular attorney although he apparently does win cases and rides a donkey (which is sadly not seen after the initial episodes)... go for it. Also don't go looking for a moral of the story in a drama called Joseon Attorney: A Morality.

On the PLUS side guess who is the King of Joseon - Song Geon-hee!! ❤🥰👌

2

So you can totally watch some handy YT edits made by our kind friends out there and call it a day!!

2

Song Geon-Hee was the reason Cera. I think I will take your advice and keep it short.

3

@seeker Song Geonhee is the King in Mystic popup bar too!!

3

I think he was a CP. Don't remember though. 😊

1

I think you are right, because I'm still at ep1 😅 I haven't found the time for it.

2

Evilive (Episode 3): Gang boss Kim Young-kwang wins a plushie for Shin Ha-kyun's niece/Shin Jae-ha's daughter from a street market ball game (he was a former baseball player) to threaten Shin Ha-kyun to work for him. He introduces himself to the little girl as a friend of her uncle's, so she calls him "samchon."

For some reason I remember Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. Not sure if either won anything at the fair but I love the scenes when they were at the theme park. 😊

Vivid Romance: using his new "powers", Yoon Shi Yoon won at least five stuffed toys, and one of them was a big Totoro (I want it!). All of them were for the SFL, who couldn't be happier.

And I think in some drama someone won a fish. A real living goldfish. I'm trying to remember where I watched that scene. Maybe a c-drama?

In Descendants of the Sun, elite soldiers Song Joong Ki and Jin Goo win stuffed animals by popping ballons with air guns.
Then they use these guns to stop a thief, and finish the day by having a double date with the stuffed animals.
Is that cheating to use an air gun when you are a snipper ? I believe that one of kdramaland super-spy also plays at a fair, but I'm not sure who.

There are a lot of claw machines in dramaland.
But the "win at the fair" is more present in cdramaland where quite often that's an occasion for a close contact shooting lesson.
