[Beanie Recs] Support for slandered heroes

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. We’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short.

@jls943 (Unaspirated): I realized recently that one of my favorite things that sometimes happens in dramas is when one of the main characters has been doing good work throughout the drama, but then is slandered or misunderstood and nearly loses everything. But then all the people who have been positively affected by our character’s actions start to speak up and defend them and it becomes a beautiful outpouring of support and validation. The two dramas I know where this happens are Our Blooming Youth (for Crown Prince Hwan) and Unlock the Boss (for In-sung) but I’d love to know of others. Whatcha got?

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

I’m going to put a group out there- our cute business men from Strongest Deliverymen. I love the camaraderie in this drama. They see a problem and try to fix the problem by gathering friends together. Things go bad and it looks like it’s over for our band of hero’s but then the very people that they were trying to help, step up and show their support. It’s a great “You can Do It” show. And our cute Kim Seon Ho, who is the reluctant villain, steps up with support at the end. I also love this cast! Go Kyung Pyo (Frankly Speaking) does plays the strong leader so well.

This is a great example, I liked this drama but have not seen any positive mentions of it prior to this one.

Not a k-drama, but the c-drama Under the Microscope does this particular trope well.

OTVOI would be a good example of this. Ban Seok has been working hard for the company only to be targeted for dismissal. He got the validation and support in the end. He also managed to grow out of his comfort zone to something better.

I got used to the acronym since the drama title is too long. On The Verge of Insanity as @attiton said. Its a low key but great drama!

In the FIERY PRIEST, Father Hae-il's past gets exposed and it causes a huge stir. Hae-il is discouraged, but everyone rallies around him to offer their support, and (trying not to be spoiler-y here) they even "rescue" him at the airport.

This was the one (aside from Unlock My Boss) that came to mind for me, too! The Fiery Priest did this really well.

I just thought of another one, MISAENG. Although the employees didn't exactly speak up to defend Chief Oh (one of the best bosses ever!), their support for him was so sincere, it was heartbreaking 💔

@jls943 what a great prompt! I love this, too, but I can't think of anything concrete to add 😅 I think this "rallying-round" a MC after a big setback also happened in Wok of Love, Police University, May It Please the Court, Stove League, Gauss Electronics, Joseon Attorney, and Chief Kim, but my memory is VERY fuzzy, so I'm going to put this with question marks (???), and anyone can feel free to correct me!

How about Please Send a Fan Letter only it's the defense of the FL that comes to pass?? @jls943 have you seen this rom-com?

I was hesitating for Chief Kim. I kind of remember that the persons he helped come back and use their particular knowledge/abilities to help him at the end.
But I might mistake it for another drama where nothing happens without reason and everything come together at the end.

Hey...this (more or less) just happened in Arang!!!! It took the king to really listen to the villagers, but their testimony just saved our man!!!

I know I’m literally the person who wrote in about this 😂 but I might have just thought of another! In Never Give Up something similar happens to our ajusshi lead when his chicken shop is going to get shut down by his awful landlord. The community rallies in support because he’s always been such a great guy to everyone!

Of all I have seen, Our Blooming Youth is probably the best example of this (no drama has done friendship, trust and support better) but the other one I can think of is another Park Hyung Sik drama Doctor Slump where the ML is grossly shunned by everyone even though he is the kindest, most generous person around, until the people he thought would never be his friends are the ones who not only step up and defend him, but eventually help to turn his life around and help him form real connections instead of superfluous one.

It's a good thought for Doctor Slump, but that one happens over multiple episodes, and I'm looking for a sudden outpouring of support that takes place largely over one episode. Otherwise it would apply to a huge number of dramas!

So for OBY did you mean something like episode 9? When CP supports Sung On? (In my mind I read it as the support that CP received after being grossly misunderstood by everyone).

I meant when they go to the secret village and are going to be killed for finding it and for being part of the royal family, and then the orphan kids pipe up and say that Hwan helped them when he knew where they were from, the tavern couple vouch for him, and the palace workers tell everyone he stood with them when they were kicked out. And they end up saving his and his friends' lives with their support!

Ah! OK, got it. I think I didn't read the prompt right.

I'm not sure if Cho Seungwoo's character in Life falls into this category. He was misunderstood by the doctors, but the FL (Won Jinah), his secretary (Yeom Hyeran), and his friend who is in charge of organ donation at that hospital (Tae Inho) know what kind of person he is and defend him at multiple occasions.

Romance is a Bonus Book, Dan-i resigns after her past academic and work achievements are exposed and she is wrongly accused of not sending a termination notice to the printers, she is later reinstated under the 'special recruitment policy'.

This is the kind of trope that happens at the very end of drama usually...

I don't know if Mad Dog could be counted. But they don't like the ML because they misunderstood him but at the end, they all worked together.

Not the main plot, but I need to give a shout out for Captain Yoo in Prison Playbook. The wrongest of wrongs done to him, and what a team to bring him back from the brink!

Maybe Lee Dong-sik in 'Beyond Evil'? No matter how hard his colleagues try to protect him, he is forever tainted with suspicion over the disappearance of his sister.

And there's 'My Lawyer, Mr Joe'. ( Disgraced prosecutor who has lost everything, and is living on the streets, starts offering legal aid to the poor and homeless...)

I think the Cha Tae-hyun and Jung Yong-hwa starrer Brain Works does this trope rather well.

The end of Thank You is kind of like that, although it's more like all her neighbors stopped being such jerks.

@jls943
When I first read your request I was surprised that this was a trope to you. I had never thought about it this way, and I couldn't remember any particular instance from any drama.

Then just now I encountered a big lovely such scene in ep 9 of Please Don't Date Him! I will write more about the show in the next WWW post.

I wouldn’t necessarily call it a trope. At least not in the same way I’d call “accidentally falling and landing in a kiss” a trope. It’s just a thing I love and find really rewarding when I see it happen in dramas. It makes me feel like all the good people in the world will have folks come out to support them when they are in trouble (even when I know this isn’t actually how life works) and sometimes that’s just what I need.

But I’m elated that you have encountered one such scene! And I somehow don’t remember ever hearing about this drama before… ever? Does it have an alternate title? I await your post with baited breath!

I didn't know what to call it except a trope😅 , but I know what you mean.

I had never heard of it either, and no, it doesn't have an alternate title! 😳

See you on WWW!
