Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (May 4, 2024)
by DB Staff
So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Lovely Runner: Still the highlight of my week. I was very relieved that the show only taunted us with hints of just-missed connection for a limited time before delivering the much-awaited reunion. Given too readily and without that build-up, it wouldn’t have felt quite as earned, but dragged out too long, it turns into a sadistic act of anti-fanservice. While it’s a little eye-rolly to depict a 34-year-old top pop/movie star being that innocent and awkward around the girl he likes, I enjoy Sun-jae’s utter lack of cool around Sol too much to look that gift horse in the mouth. As for that murderous plot turn, the prospect of a third-party evildoer did occur to me and I’m sure some fans saw it coming, but I think I would have preferred the initial version where Sun-jae falls victim to depression and Sol’s desperation to save him brings them together. That feels more intimate, meaningful. Maybe that plot has fewer twists and a more straightforward trajectory, but I would have been fine with just a character-based story of growth and connection. Not that I don’t think the story works now, since saving Sun-jae remains the goal, but I would have rather we got there without spending time on nefarious villains whose only purpose in the story is to be a plot device of evildoing.
Queen of Tears: Such… slow… going. My pesky sense of completionism is provoking me onward and I’m sort of mad about it, but for whatever reason I feel like I have to finish despite not really enjoying this anymore. I know where this is going and generally how it will end, but despite the appealing visuals and well-acted performances, this drama seems to be wallowing in its beauteous misery and I have no patience for that. Sometimes pain and poignancy can be lovely and thoughtfully portrayed, with tears that feel cathartic, so it’s not that I take issue with the premise. But when the end trajectory seems so obvious, all that time luxuriating in dramatic angst just feels overindulgent. Cut the fat and get to the point, please!
Doctor Slump: I wanted something breezy and easy to watch and the premise hinted at healing dramedy, and for the first six episodes or so it was delivering on my expectations. I liked exploring the existential crises of these two overachieving adults who’d never had a chance to slow down, only to find circumstances forcing them to screech to a halt and reevaluate their lives. I could relate to that sense of “what is it all for?” weariness, when a lot of dramas tend to focus on the go-getter culture of chasing career success. Ten episodes in, though, and the plot seems to be spinning its wheels a bit. And while I understand that arrested development is sort of the point of their characters, I tire a bit of watching grown adults behave like emotionally stunted teens. I do want them to grow… but maybe offscreen, and in fast-forward.

Lovely Runner: I love this drama sooooooo much I don’t even know what to say first or what I love the most. This week, in addition to that kiss (*TKO*), I’m just so impressed with the nerviness of the writing — to think they built the high school portion of the story so painstakingly, made me feel the ache of leaving it, and then got me 100% invested in the newly improved present day? So fast, and so seamlessly? Touché.

Lovely Runner: I’m running out of ways to say “I love this show so very, very much,” but that remains just as true this week as it has been all along. (Though, HOW is it already halfway over??) I CANNOT with these two and their mutual pining over what’s right in front of them, not to mention their adorably awkward commitment to try and play it cool in spite of themselves. And when they finally came out and admitted their feelings — and ACTED on them! — it was so deliciously satisfying even though I knew it couldn’t last. I may be in the minority on this, but I don’t mind the serial killer aspect at all, because for me it helps answer the “Why her? Why now?” questions regarding Sol’s time travel. When it seemed like she was just a random fan Sun-jae happened to have had a teenage crush on, there wasn’t a very strong reason she’d be the one sent back to save him, but it makes more sense (in my head, anyway) that it would be tied to a significant event in their shared past and the person responsible for that event returning to wreak more havoc. Likewise, seeing the full story of Sol’s accident in the original timeline helped put things into better perspective, especially Sun-jae’s part in it — it wasn’t technically his fault, but no wonder the guilt ate him alive! TL;DR: This week was a roller coaster and I never want to get off.

The Midnight Studio: I bawled my eyes out over Seo Ji-hoon’s episodes.
Chief Detective 1958: Park Jung-hyuk, the adorable little rattlesnake! It’s always exciting to see one of my favorite musical actors on screen, heh. I don’t think I’m all that invested in the overarching plot yet, and the comedy can be hit or miss for me, but I have to admit subduing a snake gang with actual snakes was hilariously apt. I feel like I need to turn off my brain and enjoy this ridiculously zany wild ride, haha!

Lovely Runner: This week had me all giddy, smiling at my screen and swooning at how utterly adorable Sun-jae is as a smitten puppy in love. That man is really a goner for Sol in all timelines. Sun-jae and Sol were cute together in high school, and I love that they’re still serving that cuteness — of course, sandwiched between tension and electricity — in their adult era. My highlight of the week is obviously the kiss(!), and it was absolutely hilarious to watch Sun-jae inevitably get “oppa-ed” when Sol bundled him out with a scarf over his face.
PS: I hope a certain drama can see the level of fan service that other dramas are giving their fans. No, I really hope that drama sees how normal people react when they finally address their miscommunications and get together after a period of separation.
PPS: That crazy cab dude needs to leave Sun-jae and Sol alone. Actually, all serial killers and psychopaths need to leave rom-coms. Period!
Frankly Speaking: I’m not a hundred percent sold on this yet, but I enjoyed watching Mr. Announcer struggle with his new unfiltered reality. I could do with less toilet and stinky socks humor though. By the way, having zero filter might seem like a curse to our announcer, but I know a specific couple who’d actually benefit from this blessing in disguise. But how else would we get 16 episodes of miscommunication and angst?

Still watching 'Blood Free' (though there are tiny signs it might be heading towards a car-crash Grid-like ending) and 'Chief Detective 1958' (which is getting a bit darker, but the action is a still lot of fun, and I'm so grateful they avoided the girlfriend-in-peril trope!)
I didn't think 'Frankly Speaking' would be my thing, but it was unexpectedly funny in places. Go Kyung-pyo is doing a great job with the uptight-guy-betrayed-by-his-brain body language .
Watched one episode of 'The Atypical Family' but won't continue. Very Netflixy. Not enough nuance to the characters for me to care what happens to them.
Tried one episode of 'Lovely Runner', hoping I would be sucked in, but (like 'Twinkling Water Melon') it's destined to be one of those series that everyone loves but I just can't get into. Well, it would be a boring world if we all had exactly the same tastes... 😊

You are right to note that tastes do differ- and that this is OK. Part of the point to DB is that we get different perspectives from each other. I am also not watching LOVELY RUNNER because I simply dislike time travel stories. I do, however, appreciate that my fellow beanies have found it to be a good show.

The busy town budget week continues, and the social scene is heating up. With one landmark birthday getaway and one wedding coming up, along with being a part of a dance group, cue - throw in some practice sessions - my hours are accounted down to the minutes. However, I still managed to catch the stuff and cheat visit Dramabeans. Sleep? What's that? 😂
Live Watch:
Our Lovely Runner I am now an official addict, and the drama keeps doling out its doses of addictive charm and upping the thrill by introducing oodles of sexy doozies in the mix. Episode 8 is what loooong sighs are made of. Could they at least not have dated for a bit before being thrown back again?
Humour is so good in this. These two are killing it with their chemistry.
But I am a bit mad because Cupcake appeared for what—00.01 seconds? With his haircut, he looks chocolate-frosted with Boston creme filling.
I don't understand the ratings, though. It breached 5% on Monday and fell to 4 on Tuesday. How? Even though BSW makes it to the top of the charts of the most buzzworthy actors and brand recognition? What does the SK audience smoke that I don't?
Atypical Family I Started watching this because it came up in my feed, and I had no idea it had Jang Ki Yong. One look at his sharp, upturned, pointed nose and dreamy cinnamon eyes, and I did a deep dive. But surfaced soon after because its darkness took me by surprise. And he is an appa now? Since when? He looks like a high schooler in his hoodie. And his Mom (or is it grandma?) is overdoing it. Only halfway through the first episode, so I will come back on this.
Other non k-shows:
Best Choice Ever I only caught two more episodes. I am getting super annoyed at the mother. She is just not second-hand embarrassment; she is a dark spot on all Moms. Can I vamoose her? Though I liked her chasing the harasser with her shoe.
The leads are beautiful, and both cry pretty. But otherwise, surprisingly, they are a bit monotonous and their chemistry, while there, is not earth-shaking. Or maybe the drama is dragging now? I miss Na-na. She was the brightest light of this show.
Shogun 8/12. This is a dark, difficult watch. The romance tugs at the heartstrings, and the politics are complicated. Hubby went ahead and finished it and said it was awesome.
Laapata Ladies'/b> This is a delightful little Hindi film set in the early 2000s. It has so much heart, is beautifully crafted, and is brilliantly acted. This is a gem. It is short and sweet and is on Netflix.
Dil, Dosti, Dilemna Watched the first three episodes before calling it quits. I gave it a try because it's written by a friend, but the casting lets the whole thing down.
Rewatch:
Our Blooming Youth
The community watch has made this drama even more endearing. The number of swoon-worthy, heart-tugging, and laughter-inducing moments in this drama is unbeatable. Beanie gifs are killing...

In progress this week:
**Lovely Runner:** I'm in love. Kim Hye Yoon was already one of my favorites (and one of the only actresses that I feel was made for the "peppy little FL with a personality" role). Other commenters have already explained in depth why I'm enjoying this show lol--I will add that Byeon Woo Seok has joined my list of "Men That Would Turn Me Into A Puddle If They Looked At Me Like That." Ahem.
**Devil Judge:** Super duper late to the party here but I don't go for dark storylines and finally got curious enough with this one. I'm sort of....meh??? In a committed way? Haha. I'm hooked on the characters--Jisung's performance seems to emanate a cold electricity--but there are SO many little things that don't make sense with practical logistics. Or feelings. Also, even though Kim Min Jung's psychopathic character makes me want to roast her eyeballs over a slow fire, she doesn't feel type-cast for the role and I honestly have a hard time connecting her to it. Like I want someone less doe-eyed or something. But like I said, am committed to the story and will see it out. (Wish me luck, it's getting depressing.)
Enjoy reading everyone's mini-reviews here :)

HEALER!!
The greatest benefit of arriving late in Kdrama land is that there are still some classics I haven't watched yet.
I am loving this one!! I'm about halfway through, I started watching between QoT episodes. Healer is moving along and keeping my interest, no slowing down so far.
Anyone have other classics to recommend for fans of Healer?

OMG. The jealousy. The jealousy for the first watch of Healer.
There's honestly not much like it, but I can say...don't think that The K2, because it has Wookie in it (or any other reason), is a repeat of the Healer condition!!! It's not.
You know what might be a little like it (although not nearly as classic--sorry to the real fans!!) is Unlock the Boss.
For a sillier, less sexy take on an action show with a hacker ajumma, you could try Stealer: The Treasure Keeper!

Thanks!
I really like Park Min Yung and Ji Chang Wook in Healer, she was also good in Sungkyunkwan Scandal but I haven't been too impressed with with of them in more recent shows like Samdal Ri and WWWSK.

Oh, for those two actors (rather than looking for a similar plot), IMO, Wookie hasn’t had as good a role since then, sadly. I liked PMY though in Her Private Life next best…and then Marry My Husband next, next best!!

Ok thanks, I always see comments about "Wookie" so I expected more successes from him. I'll check out your suggestions 🙂

Queen For Seven Days and When the Weather Will Be Fine with PMY were really good. But since What's Wrong With Secretary Kim, she seemed to focus more on how look her characters than the rest.
For Ji Chang-Wook, if his other dramas weren't so good, it wasn't because of him. He tried to choose very different roles. K2's action was great, Suspicious Partner's romance was really nice, Lovestruck in the City's concept was pretty interesting, etc.

Yeah I think she's too thin in her more recent shows, with less charming characters

Lovely Runner: I love this show sooooo much, I just can't describe the rollercoster of emotions I go through every monday-tuesday. I'm literally praying that writer-nim will give as a happy ending.
Chief Detective 1958: I'm not sure if great stories like this is written with Lee Jee hoon in mind or the man is just an expert in picking/choosing such great scripts. He is just great in very show/role i have seen him in.
Doctor Slump: I don't know...just not able to finish this one still.
Flex x Cop: I wanted to watch this when this was on-air but couldn't due to my exams. This is good, they don't drag the cases and its perfectly seasoned with right amount of suspense, mystery and comedy. And I think Isoo mom was murdered by Heeja maybe?
