Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (May 11, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

Lovely Runner: There are many things to love about this show, but one thing that particularly tickled me this week was the commitment to acting in those fantasy dramatizations. I’m used to these kinds of parody scenes being carried by a cheeky wink-to-the-audience style of acting — self-aware and over-the-top — but it added a layer of hilarity to see all the actors really going for the dramatics (from the shorn-hair bromance to the jealously imagined tearful reunion). The actors went full melo and left the comedy to the directing, and I was heartily entertained and impressed. It helps that the cast is strong enough to carry the emotions on top of the comedy. Speaking of strong acting, that ending scene has been on a constant loop in my head, and the earnestness of Sun-jae’s “if I died saving you, it’s okay” declaration had me in literal tears. What I love about all these different iterations of the Sol/Sun-jae timeline(s) is that even when circumstances differ across various realties, their characters remain constant at their core and that’s why they keep finding their way to each other and doing everything in their power to save the other person, even at their own expense. That kind of ferocious determination is their greatest defense against the pull of fate, which is mighty but possibly less relentless than they are. I mean, have you met Sol? That girl doesn’t know the meaning of quitting, in the best way.

missvictrix

Lovely Runner: Gosh I was *NOT* ready to leave the latest version of the present day, but then I found myself totally enjoying the college storyline (with so many Cheese in the Trap vibes for me). I started to wonder where exactly we were going after a bit, but boy the payoff of that ending scene was worth it all. HOW DO THEY KEEP DOING THIS TO MY HEART.

mistyisles

Lovely Runner: I continue to marvel at how this show jumps from one emotional extreme to another without giving me whiplash. The premise may hinge on tragedy, but goodness is it ever the perfect little happy pill! I don’t know why I assumed that whatever prevents Sol from telling the future would also prevent her from telling people she was *from* the future, but I’m glad I was wrong because Sun-jae’s reaction to figuring it out — and to figuring out what it meant — was everything I didn’t know I wanted. And speaking of Sun-jae and wanting things, the biggest question this week left me with is, what does Sun-jae actually want (aside from Sol’s love)? If seeking further treatment was for his father and joining Eclipse was for In-hyuk, what direction would he choose just for himself?

Carry Sun-jae and Run: 🏃‍♂️‍➡️❤️ I love Ryu Sun-jae so much. I'm so impressed by Byeon Woo-seok; every time he looks at Im-sol there's so much love, adoration, and hope in his eyes, and when he cries, it's real crying, not acting-crying. Sun-jae has saved her in every iteration of the timeline. His unconditional love, faithfulness, and constancy are beautiful. That ep. 10 ending was A+ beautiful (*yep I cried*). Also, I can't believe we got a Spider-Man kiss; so 2009 😂 Have I mentioned I also love our SML? Still 6 eps... I predict a dystopian future before a final reset (thanks to Halmeoni), and a final time-skip to 2024, for WHAT HAD BETTER BE a happy ending.

Frankly Speaking 👨‍💼🔊 Our poor ML has so repressed and subsumed his true thoughts and feelings for so long. The eruption of everything, besides being hilarious, is shaping up to be an interesting exploration of his growth. I love the theme of protecting your heart. The FL is good medicine for the ML, and hopefully they can help each other to have strong hearts and happy careers. Really truly enjoying this!!! There's something really relaxing about its vibe that I really dig.

Finished
Soundtrack #1: 🎼❤️ I think this is actually a fantasy (Lol) about a woman who has managed to not *yet* have fallen in love with the ML, who is kind, thoughtful, successful, looks like Park Hyung-sik, and has been in love with her for years. I had seen comments about this being "boring," but to me, that came through as sweet, soothing, and relaxing. It really snuck up on me how much I loved this!!! Low on angst, it's the perfect choice if you're in need of four short-ish episodes of a ML being in love and a FL falling in love.

Welcome2Life: 🧍‍♂️⏳️🧍‍♂️This was really good! Also super stressful, because the cases were very dark. Rain was absolutely excellent. I highly recommend this if you like mystery/thriller/personal growth dramas (*and Rain*).

This was my second PHS drama. I landed on it after Nevertheless. I really like Han So Nee and wanted to watch her in a similar softer role. Wasn't prepared for the gentle whirlwind that came alongside her though. It's such a lovely comfort watch.
PHS is kinda a roly poly teddy bearish in it (translate looks weren't impressive 😂). After Song Kang's sizzle of Nevertheless, it needed some lens adjustment. And I remember thinking - how does she have so much chemistry with this guy? And why do I love them so much? And it has Eng dub (how I watched it the first time).

Oh I loved Park Hyung-sik in this and thought he looked extremely handsome!! They did have really nice chemistry.

5

I re-learned a lesson from this show. Clothes are deceptive.

Song Kang was the quintessential poster boy good looking in Nevertheless, while PHS turned up in loose pants, baggy t-shirts and generally hump-walked through the series with his hands in his jacket. The quintessential boy next door. The man does not even try to look good, and its noticeable because Han So Nee sports this model look through out. I was brand new to K-drama land, and was used to sharply dressed men - had just finished Business Proposal - (plus didn't watch too many modern dramas, Sagueks were more interesting, and it took me a good one episode to realise he was the Hwarang King, but I digress further in this already digressing commentary).

My eyes were blinded by the suits I was used to seeing in most dramas (I think I had also watched Business Proposal by this time, so you can relate). So while I didn't have anything against a regular next door look, the phrase oh boy! how good lookin is this guy didn't occur to me the way it did for Song Kang, or Kim Min-Kyu.

And yet I ended up falling in love with these two waaay more than I did the duo in Nevertheless.

I realised it much later that I succumbed to what I now call 'the look' of PHS chemistry magic.

6

@minniegupta1 well-suited MLs are a beautiful sight to behold in dramaland! 😍 (*cue ZZ Top "Sharp Dressed Man*) Because they're a more rare breed, I also really like the boy-next-door look of actors in dramas like this - very cuddly and huggable 😉 I've never found the more weedy/skinny/ethereal look appealing, and I think that's a personal preference for me that I prefer the more solid, sturdy frame of actors like Park Hyung-sik. PHS chemistry magic is right!!! What he was able to do in four short episodes - wow 🙌 😍

10

I've never found the more weedy/skinny/ethereal look appealing, and I think that's a personal preference for me that I prefer the more solid, sturdy frame of actors like Park Hyung-sik.

Oh! I am now permanently seated front row of this breed.

I was mad when PHS lost weight for DS, though I understood and was just thankful he didn't go back to his skinny days.

Ditto about Soundtrack #1.

I really liked the story. It was not loud. It wasn't silent either. It was a story told in a very calm manner.
I took me more than 11 months to watch the last half of episode 4, but I finished it nonetheless because I knew it wasn't boring.

I am so behind the SYIM19thL because the last three weeks have been brutal. I will try to catch up after the weekend of 18th (this week I barely will keep my head above water and hope can have LR and OBY pencilled in somewhere.)

Because Soundtrack #1 is a quick watch I am more optimistic to get through it.

What about some love for our stellar Sol as played by KHY?🤗🥰. I cannot imagine any other actor play Sol. KHY has elevated BWS performance in palpable ways. I’ll stand by this assertion until the cows come home even if I’m very fond of BWs’ performance in LR. And last but not least, I echo your love for Tae. Song Geonhee has done wonders with this role.

The Midnight Studio: Too much nonsense in the last episode. It is as if because of the pre-emption the writer felt the need to tack on more stuff. It added nothing to the drama. The single best part of this drama was the intimacy in the romantic relationship. I believed every bit of their relationship. I hope we see more relationships like that in the future. The Nam Gu and Na Rae relationship was the worse, in life and death he treated her badly. There was no resolution and nothing was gained. As for Sung Ho and Ji Won, what a terrible contrivance. She is the one that gets the short end of the stick on this. Smh, a mess. Luckily, we had the romance of our OTP, man, lol.

Lovely Runner: I really really really hope that in the back 6 we don’t do the back and forth anymore. Girl, just be with that man. Change what you can and move on. The best parts of this drama which are genuinely far and few in between are when Sol and Seong Jae are being themselves together. Also, Taesung, but he is awesome despite the fact that he is rather superfluous to the overall storyline. So, writer, please let the next 6 episodes just be them together, fighting off the serial killer, loving each other, just together. I will actually scream if there is another separation.

Frankly Speaking: Special shout out to Kwon Yul for appearing so randomly in this drama. I am never expecting him and it is such a joy when he pops up. I hope he cameos this way until the end. I am 70/30 on Woo Joo being Gu Won’s mom, but the writer is doing the best to make it a mystery, because Gu Won has not called her mom once. So, the 30% is some mystery sister or sister-in-law who also works at a TV station and is his mother. Who knows. I really like Woo Joo, she is so sweet but not in a saccharine way, she seems to really just care generally. I like that the attraction between our leads is slow and mutual. It reminds me of the Ed Sheeran song Thinking Out Loud “People fall in love in mysterious ways, maybe just the touch of hand.” As for Jeong Heon, he seems to have a rather nasty streak, hmm. I also really like that the foreign actress (I-Na) has nailed the Korean mannerism, her Korean is pretty good and she is seamless in this role. Huzzah, for a good non-Korean actress.

Blood Free: I mean it ended with a bang and lots of questions. The ending was not satisfying. This is the 2nd time this writer has given an ending I despise. I think with Stranger: Forest of Secrets, she had one issue, so her focus was laser sharp, she was able write a tight basically perfect show. In BF and Grid, there are too many pots, ingredients, cooks, sous chefs, spoons, ladles, chopsticks, measuring cups, etc in the kitchen. In the end you end up with an opening premise with no conclusion and a series of other premises with no conclusion either. She touched on many things, but no meals at the end. It is unfortunate because there was a lot that could have been explored.

Chief Detective: We are almost at the...

Re: About Blood Free, I do hope we get a drama chat where we get to discuss Writer Lee Soo-yeon's dramas and how open ended she's concluding her dramas of late.

I miss Forest of Secrets 1&2 and Life - both open ended but satisfying as we are left with food for thoughts rather than questions. And then we compare this with her latest projects , Grid and Blood Free, that leave more questions than thoughts.

Required fields are marked *

I have my theory that because her works were not easy ones to manifest on screen, she needs compatible directors to execute the story. Her script is deep, complicated and twisted. Her protagonists weren’t exactly perfect, some are took stand as if they are “devil’s” advocate in search of truth. And her “villains” weren’t exactly evil either. They usually managed to offer a good and valid argument against the idea of goodness that is expected in society or that is thought by the protagonists. Her shows is like watching a debate where every side has a well founded and rational reasoning. And she mixed that with the weakness and strength of individual character and personality. So with all that said, it took a lot of talent from the director to decipher the story and presented it as something interesting and solid for the viewers to watch.

8

Required fields are marked *

This is why I was drawn to her stories in the first place - it makes me think.

However, I do hold that she's veering away from conclusive open endings.

If she gives another twisted complicated script, trust me, I'll be watching it. Beanies who love her works will too. Why? Because I love how her crafts engage me. And I'm sure other beanies share similar sentiments.

The only thing I'm getting dissatisfied with is the lack of conclusions of late. I'm talking Grid and Blood Free. I'm not asking her to think for me. I simply ask for clarity.

I agree with this. Her ending needs a bit more clarity. I was unsatisfied with the ending of Blood Free. I skipped Grid and not likely to pick it up with the feedback I read about it.

Your sentence. Period, Full stop. "I am simply asking for clarity."

I feel as though putting Sol through so much sorrow and grief has become more important than providing a a (more) profound foundation for why they fell in love (not fall in guilt as in Sol). As much as I love this drama, subjecting Sol to so much misery has come uncomfortably close to fetishising misery and heartache for women.

And, In MS, the OTP’s relationship notwithstanding the fantasy nonsense was moving and fairly unique. One aspect of the fantastical elements which resonated with me was the idea of the mutual need to let go of your loved ones who have died no matter how painful it maybe. I agree with you that the Narae and Namgu was just done poorly and he overstayed his welcome.

Blood Free : Ep 10 was chaos
and full of blood. But the action sequences were good. I enjoyed watching Joppa in all his coat suit glory. The show had a lot of potential for creating a debate but instead it went too deep into the corporate greed that it forgot how it started. Not sure if we will get a season 2 and it might be really far off.

Nothing uncovered : it was a decent watch. The two male leads carried the show. FL was the weakest link, both writing and acting. I liked the investigation and reveals throughout the show. A decent closure to all the cases and a very realistic legal system where the rich keep dragging the case. Frustrating, yes. But felt real.

Will love in spring (cdrama) : Overall, a great drama. I wish the last few episodes were more terse. I didn’t like the way Jie handled her leaving to Shanghai. For a couple who made every effort to communicate, this felt off. Still, the show portrayed relationships realistically and the portrayal of her disability was very sensitive. The OST and cinematography was beautiful. Also, it was really nice to see a couple having physical intimacy and wanting to hug and kiss. So refreshing for a drama. The leads were amazing and had terrific chemistry!
Arrival of JiSan Goose with its plus one was hilarious and cute.

Ongoing

Atypical Family : Too early to tell. Need two more episodes. The more I think, I feel the FL might have the super power to travel to future. Thats the only way I can make sense of the hand holding scene.

Frankly Speaking : One of the shows where I feel very calm and relaxed watching the leads. I like them together. Their interactions are sweet, genuine and comforting. I am looking forward to the reality show hijinks and how she plans to use his skills.

Lovely Runner : I am glad Sol finally revealed her secret. She was suffering by herself. Not sure what this should will do for another 6 episodes!!

Ooooh, Jie not talking about her return to Shanghai was very very frustrating. (So was Maidong's long silent treatment afterwards.) Live Watches
The Midnight Studio: When it was good, it was so fun and great. Sadly it was increasingly meh as it went along, and while I was never upset at anything that happened, I wasn’t thrilled with most of the ending either.

Older Dramas
Marry My Husband: Finished! This was a blast and a half. Most importantly: where can I get a best friend like Hui-yeon? I don’t even need her to be my rich fairy godmother (although, yes please), I just want to eat with her on a regular basis so we can wax poetic about food together. And I’d love someone who’d be ready to go to a wedding of people she hates just to support me as I look amazing and make everyone jealous.

K-action Movie of the Week
The Roundup: No Way Out: As long as Ma Dong-seok is happy making these, I’ll be happy watching them. The first one was definitely the best, but they are consistently entertaining. It legitimately sounds like Ma Dong-seok breaks the sound barrier whenever he punches someone. My favorite parts were when he inexplicably has to take on some no-name thugs on his way to work, when he breaks his ribs but carries on as if it’s nothing, and when he and his partner crack a window for the low-level gangster they’re keeping in their car. (Husband, “Who is that smarmy-looking guy and where have I seen him?” Me: “It’s the guy who played the shady substitute in Moving and the incompetent magistrate in Kingdom.” Jeon Seok-ho does good work 😂)

COMPLETED
The Midnight Studio - I did like that they talked about going to the netherworld instead of it being one-sided noble idiocy from Ki-joo but there was NO reason for the time-skip other than to make their romance seem epic and dramatic. The continuing ghost love story was also a…choice. Will remember the cute OTP and not much more.

Blood Free/ Dominant Species - Not surprised by the open ending. There were too many unaddressed issues for it to end any other way. But where did they take poor Man-sik 😭.

ONGOING
Lovely Runner - So much happened in these episodes. I'm loving the writing for this show where you feel weighed down right along with Sol and Sun-jae in their separate worlds just wishing they'd connect and then that final scene 🥰. Finally they share the weight together. Just 💯. Nice to have more Tae-sung again - could do with less of the brother and more of him.

Frankly Speaking - MUCH better second week. The best parts are when the show gets the emotional beats right and doesn't try so hard for the jokes - like the transformer blowing out - drawn-out but still funny.

Chief Inspector 1958 - I lost count of how many times they said "the world has changed/ it's a new word" in Ep. 6. We get there's a new big bad in town (and in the era) but everything getting related back to him is exhausting.

STARTED
The Atypical Family - I paused this midway through the first episode because it was hard to watch people who are already hurting being conned like that. But I pushed through to complete both episodes a few days later and as a whole they didn't seem too bad? At least I'm curious about the super-powered family and why Da-hae caused a change in Gwi-joo's powers (is it like the Patronus in Harry Potter - he could touch her because she told him he could touch her 🤔).

C-DRAMAS
Completed Young Babylon. Too much of the latter half of the show was a never-ending cycle of misery. The awful friend kept getting free passes, the poor good cousin suffered the most, and then they tacked on a "it was all a dream bit" 🙄.

No other c-dramas on my plate right now. Nothing appeals to me. Should I just wait for Joy of Life 2 🤔?

Please keep the dark to fun watch ratio 10/90%

Frankly Speaking
I like Kibaek and Woojoo's talks and their growing friendship.
And I live for Kwon Yul's cameos, they are hilarious.

Running from Sunjae
I was getting tired from Sol's frantic avoidance and making Sunjae constantly sad. Luckily Taesung brought some sun and comedy and I love how he has chemistry with everyone (especially with Sunjae 😁). I also somehow ship Sol with both of them? 😅
The ending made me cry, with Sunjae figuring out the truth and trying to explain that living fully NOW is ok, even knowing the consequences.

I'm Not a Hero
I feel like I'm in some Tim Burton's Grimm's fairytale... and I'm enchanted and want to know what happens next. The cinematography is part of the charm... and I'm also digging the subtle humour. (Just Show, give Yina soon some happiness please!)

On the Verge of Insanityrewatch, ep 1
I roped my husband into (re)watching this (yes, @attiton you are responsible). He finds it sometimes slow (he is used to his Yes, (Prime) Minister series), but likes the humour and some of the details... and he is willing to try episode 2. 🙂

Looking forward to Midnight Romance. 😊

The Midnight Studio (Series review) - Mood progression: C / C- / C- / D+ / D / D / D / D / D-
The show started out fine but as with all fantasy shows, if you don’t develop your fantasy elements and let makjang dictate the plot (the evil spirit started ruining stuff from the Seo Ji Hoon procedural onwards), it’s only natural that the plot falls apart. Well, I can’t say I didn’t see the deus ex machina coming but it’s never not disappointing to see how it all ended.

Lovely Runner (Episode 9-10) - Mood: C-
There is an undercurrent of repetition amongst each usage of the watch’s time travelling powers (FL flailing around and ML rescuing her from sticky situations) that makes me sigh. It’s hard to say that the writer subverted the noble idiocy arc when it’s actually a drunken confession from the FL. At least the 2ML was upgraded from a cameo to plot device this week? Yay?

The Atypical Family (Episode 1-2) - Mood: D+
While flawed characters can spice up a narrative, there is nothing interesting when the plot is spelled out for you: the FL’s a scammer who begins to feel guilty when she falls in love for real with the ML while he gets angry when he discovers that it’s all a lie. And they’ve also telegraphed that the ML saved the FL from the traumatic fire because yup, childhood connection.

Frankly Speaking (Episode 3-4) - Mood: C-
Oh, a show having Kwon Yul as an extended cameo (and not a villain for once!) is already a win in my book. Also, it is nice to see that once the show cut down on the humour and focused on the more serious beats, it actually had some real watchable moments. Of course, the 2ML/Ha Young characterisation is particularly troubling (especially him!), but we’ll see.

While I appreciate your reminder to consider the feelings and hard work of the creative people behind the dramas we may take for granted, I've always found Radily's comments to be constructive and helpful. I find the mood rating a novel way of documenting how a viewer's impressions may change from one episode to the next, and the rating scale is consistently applied to all shows, so you could just assume Radily's C might be a B or higher for a different K-drama fan. As someone who finds the ratings at MyDramaList, AsianWiki, Viki, and elsewhere to be relatively inflated compared to, say, IMDB's or Rotten Tomatoes' ratings of series and movies that are not Asian Dramas, I think it's good to encourage succinct, constructive criticism (both positive and negative) when it's warranted.

I can't comment on the other dramas mentioned in Radily's post, but I agree with the assessment of Lovely Runner, a popularly celebrated but flawed show that depends too heavily on formulaic tropes and star chemistry, sometimes in lieu of adequate plot or character development. As someone who is still entertained by the drama (and others like it), I think comments can be civil, varied, and enlightening (for people who may have mixed feelings) without resorting to rabid fandom or hateful trolling. In fact, I come here to find a mix of different reactions to dramas. It's thanks to some of these discerning beanies that I discovered Misaeng, Just Between Lovers, Life on Mars, My Mister, Squad 38, and other dramas I really enjoyed.

Of course opinions differ on this site. Some beanies love to constantly objectify male actors and hero worship them but others are much more thoughtful and do justice to their need to critique which isn’t identical to criticism. Radily’s comment is an appropriate critique and this is the site to do it.

WATCHED, WATCHING, AND WILL WATCH

LOVELY RUNNER
This show continues to deliver. Sure, it has somethings I don’t like—mainly, the loveline between the brother and best friend, which for this otherwise well-written, well-acted show, is oddly underdeveloped, overacted, and time wasting when we are supposed to cherish every moment. However, Kim Hye Yoon and Byeon Woo Seok are magical together, and every scene between them is so fun and mesmerizing to watch. This show and the buzz around it remind me of Coffee Prince, when Gong Yoo’s career blew up because the chemistry between him and Yoon Eun Hye was lightning in a bottle and his in-love eyes just was so captivating and believable. Same here. Career changing show for BWS and hopefully just as much for KHY because, while he is deservedly the heartthrob, she is the heart of the show. Can’t wait to see how the second half goes with the timetravelling piece seemingly in a different set of hands.
Also, one aside (or it is a main?)—Byeon Woo Seok’s athleticism/grace in his body is a sight to behold and is really beautiful to watch.

STARTED, BUT NOT SITTING RIGHT AS ENTERTAINMENT
ATYPICAL FAMILY
The outright, long-term neglect of the teenage daughter just overshadowed everything else. It didn’t help to have the treatment of main character’s weight and emotional overeating seem mean-spirited (“let’s have her eat so out-of-control and messily to have food smeared on her face” is a telling decision). All the other plot points—“oh, look, somehow the FL has singular power to touch and be touched by the ML when he is using his power”; “who’s zooming whom?”—are hard to enjoy when seeing a very sympathic KID being neglected and perhaps manipulated.

COMPLETED
WILL LOVE IN SPRING
Started out great, held strong, but ended in a bit of a frustration with how FL hid her plans to leave. Her ambition and desire to live her life, which was understandable, but at the same time, she just thought she should have it all without trying to communicate and work out things with the ML. It all resolved so neatly that it felt facile. Overall though, it was a good watch and the acting was great.

ANTICIPATING
MIDNIGHT ROMANCE IN HAGWON
Very curious about this one. Wi Ha Joon caught my eye in Romance is a Bonus Book, which I didn’t love because the coats sometimes overshadowed some of the plot and I kept wondering how a mother could completely forgot about her child for long periods of time, but I liked him. He also held my attention in Little Women even though he wasn’t one of the Little Women. Hope this will be good.

One coat was so OTT that it rivaled the proposal coat in Crash Course—another coat seared in my memory. Actually the coat comment was made in fun, just like they put those coats in for fun, but I did think the young child sent away to boarding and then mostly forgotten about was weird.

The forgotten child is the comment that I see most often when anyone comments on this drama. It was literally liked those scenes were left on the cutting floor and NO ONE in post production thought that the drama watchers would notice the massive child shaped hole left behind.

The coats were played for comedy in RBB. Or at least we laughed. Some of the best coat swirls/flapping we have seen. And that army camouflage pink and red thing will live forever in our memories. You could tell that even the wardrobe department struggled with that one..

We loved it. But I can understand it 'not grabbing' someone. It is a very calm drama- if its the right time for you, its fantastic, not too emotional or too much tension, reflections on the process of commercial book production, reflections on ageing, a dog, silly coats, and some nice food.

Wa Hi Joon was the only good thing in Romance in a bonus book.

I kept wondering how a mother could completely forgot about her child for long periods of time

This was such a huge flaw that it took me out of the story. She ends up with an ML who has not even met the child, leave alone become her dad. It was just a strange story.

He hung around her house enough, he must have at least met the kid in passing.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

He must have, but she would have been very young (that is if he met her while she was still married to that guy). But the way they left the child out of the equation of their relationship for almost the entire romance part was troublesome. I would have been satisfied if they had showed at least one scene of interaction between the three. The child being an afterthought for a single mother who is supposed to be working for her child was such an odd writing and direction choice for a drama that was otherwise quite thoughtful in other ways.

I had a similar issue with Jay Yi's character in OBY - how she never misses her mother or talks about her (though she speaks about her father quite often).

5
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I agree it was odd. One of those things I chalk up to budget/production decisions- the scenes we did have with the child were all filmed to camera entirely separate to the rest of the ensemble, having a scene of interaction between the three would have required the child's presence on set.

2

Just not the presence, but even the lack of conversation on the part of two adults stuck out like a sore thumb. Obviously the guy has been in love forever, and he will probably be a good father too, but the fact that they never even have a viable convo about the child - almost as if she does not exist - once the romance starts was more glaring than then her physical absence. In all other dramas where kids are present in the equation almost always are very important part of the adult romance equation. Moving was of course all about it, but in recent times Doctor Slump excelled at it. But this is also something that made me stick and like One Spring Night. While the drama left me feeling meh, I loved how he always stood up for his son.

2

You brought back some fond memories with the mention of coats in Romance is a Bonus Book, because for a month after watching that with my wife whenever I would put on clothing she objected to I would say "Romance is a hideous coat" or "Romance is a stained shirt" or even (and sorry for this TMI line) "Romance is stretched out jockey shorts".

I might have worn out this unfunny joke by repeating it too often, but I think of my "humor" like the white truck of doom--once I step on to that road, there's nothing I can do to stop it.

Agree this is a career making role for this young man, and you don't see that every day. Also, for the screenwriter who gifted this marvelous, loving story to these capable performers.

Chief Detective 1958: 7.0 Day 6 - the fight scenes got tiresome. Instead of showing us how brave and tough the good guys are, how about showing us how clever the writer is? Day 7 - that's a little better.

Missing Crown Prince: 5.5

Atypical Family: 7.0 I have the world's most useless blend of the ML's special power and his mother's. He can visit the past; she sees future stock prices and lottery numbers when she's asleep; I see recent stock prices when I'm on the internet. Sigh.

Lovely Runner: 7.0

Midnight Photo Studio: 6.0

Blood Free: 6.5 Is the Disney Rodent pulling a Netflix on us? Will there be a 2nd season? Will it be before or after the sequels to Signal & Vagabond? Remember Vagabond? If so, poor you. Can Han Hyo-joo just go do another Moving instead?

Frankly Speaking: 8.0 I wonder what the JTBC news people think of a JTBC show in which the lead quits the "JBC" news department because it is corrupt.
So they have a power outage because of an out-of-control car and they didn't even need Kim Sae-ron. The ML's mouth isn't the only thing out of control.
Contact with the FL is what turns on the ML the ML's ability to lie. Because of course. Guys are always so completely honest and truthful around a really, really pretty woman.

Godzilla Minus One: 7.0

FRANKLY SPEAKING is just so much fun. While the comedy was tuned down in this week’s episode, I like seeing the progression of our main couple-to-be. Also the random quasi cohabitation? Yes please. While their shared rooftop terrace is not as cozy as DR SLUMP’s, I still love this trope. 👏

I hit pause on episode 14 of MIDNIGHT STUDIO and couldn’t yet find the time to continue. 🫣 I’m sure I’ll get around watching the finale, but somehow I was swept away by watching…

ON THE VERGE OF INSANITY! So, soooo good! Thanks to @attiton for bringing this to my attention! Love the setting, the main characters and just want what’s best for them. Also, while I’m usually pretty (stubbornly) immune to any kind of scene that is heart-wrenchingly tearjerking, I was taken by surprise & cried along (angrily!) with a junior engineer, who was being gaslit and taken advantage of by her superior. 😭🤧 The unfairness of it all! *shakes fist* Looking forward to continue (have some tissues ready).

Also looking forward SOOO MUUUCH to finally start watching MIDNIGHT ROMANCE, and cannot seem to shut up about it. Apologies. 🥳

JOY OF LIFE season 2 —It’s almost here! An official date has been a dream. I still feel like I am lucid dreaming.

THE MATCHMAKERS—I understand why Beanies were propelled to write essays about this one. This is one of the best dramas I have seen because all aspects are complete. One of the best drama OST/scores too. Plus, adorable couples abound. I was most drawn into the oldest Maeng sisters’ story, and I wish there was more of her. (Casting aside, I want to know how she and the CP are together in the future) But far and above Rowoon was the standout for his comedic timing: some of his expressions had me in stitches. He and Kim Hyun Mok were the perfect comedic duo.

LOVELY RUNNER —I have only watched the first episode and color me impressed. It was the full immersive experience that I relish in a good story. And as a fangirl myself, I appreciate the portrayal of being one. So far it is most respectful and true-to-my-experience depiction—both the deep gratitude for the impact the artist have left on you and the “his collarbone is guilty” moments. I hope of the experience of bring an idol is similarly treated.

LEGEND OF SHEN LI —I took a look at the original novel. Of course (amateur) translated works loose some of their essence. But I can say the drama makes the story shine and much of this is due to the leads. Their chemistry is the type that sizzles with eye contact only. I also loved the ML —minority opinion, I know. I loved that he was very trickster-like and that his character is revealed slowly. But it definitely takes a patient watcher. And the FL is one of the most collected, brilliant leaders in any drama. What a pair!

ON THE VERGE OF INSANITY — I came back to finish this after a pause and I am enjoying it. I really want them to take down their company. I think the only way to survive there is to be on the verge of insanity. And once again I am mystified by the way Lee Sang Yeob can make an objectively awful character sympathetic.

KING of MASKED SINGER —our queen is making history! I am rooting for her to tie the record held by Music Commander (Ha Hyun Woo).

@hopefulromantic
💯 The challenge with this drama is that it's long-awaited but it's long (!) and it's airing in a very short time frame. So I'm excited to watch, and I want to enjoy some real-time interactions as it airs, but I have to be realistic with my time.

2

I made it through 360 chapters of the novel on which JoL is based, but cheated and read the final one (470ish). Now that I know there will be a Season 3, I'll have to return and read those 100+ chapters. Perhaps as I wait for the next season.
I plan to be checking VIKI every morning to see what's available. Gosh, I hope its good.

4

Viki picked it up? Must go rush to find out.

You know what, I just plain MISS The Matchmakers. What a great show, a great soundtrack, and Rowoon being silly is unexpected and delirious. Totally a re-watch.

Nothing Uncovered - I'm yet to watch the finale. But I did watch episodes 11-14 this week. At the end of it all, the highlight of this drama was Han Chae-ah and Yoo Yoon-young.

I already knew that the crimes being pilled on Woo-jae would turn out to be false except for the accidental murder of Lee Na-ri. So I didn't know why they made it seem like he killed her dad too when it was first revealed.
This one had so many cool whodunnits but the writing almost ruined it. It makes consistency.
And don't even get me started on the emotional affair.

Find Me In Your Memory Episode 3-5 - I'm loving this progressively. But it is not at the besotted stage yet.
Just as I guessed, there is the old connection trope between Ha-jin and Seo-yeon. I'm guessing hanky-panky as in murder.
I also don't trust nor like the father-son psychiatrist duo. One sees Yeong-hoon as a lab rat and the latter sees him as a competition for his father's misguided affection? His father on another hand is sus. I can see how his actions will result in the shaping of an evil SML. Not even a meal...? I know his son is a psychiatrist and we expect that he'd be able to logically look at it flimsily but the guy is broken already. I won't be shocked if he became a psychiatrist because he thought it'd something that'll bond him over to his dad - shared occupations but the Good Bad Father is using him instead. There's no going back from this and its only episode 5.

The dating rumor though. I love me some spunky heroine ready to mess up the calculated hero's life.

Blood Free - My favorite airing drama has come to an end. I don't want to dissect the ending all over again. And I deeply appreciate @solstices for highlighting the social thematic commentaries Blood Free made. Solstices articulated those themes so well with words so right.
I look forward to Blood Free 2

Lovely Runner (through Ep. 10): Ahhh, the angst! It hurt so good. Well, I can say that thanks to the end of Ep. 10; otherwise it might've just hurt. I'd really like Sol and Sun-jae to start working together to protect each other. And for Sol to finally acknowledge Sun-jae's feelings and her own.

Frankly Speaking (through Ep. 3): Began watching thanks to Beanie recommendations and I'm excited to see more OTP rooftop scenes. It's so nice to see the understated way they care for each other. They could be an example of how even the worst situations are more tolerable if you have just one person fully in your corner.

Atypical Family (through Ep. 2): Intriguing so far. Not one for the feels, but it's striking in its cinematography and some of the storytelling choices. There's high crash-and-burn potential, but I can't look away.

Midnight Photo Studio (completed): The camera/curse storyline lost focus, but Bom and Ki-joo were a lovely, mature and communicative couple.

Missing Crown Prince (through Ep. 8): Not even halfway through and the crown prince keeps getting captured instead of being missing. Um, that's not what I signed up for. I'd prefer less palace drama and more picaresque adventures in the countryside.

Beauty and Mr. Romantic (through Ep. 12): Yes, I'm being a wimp. I peeked at the hangout and saw that Do-ra's downfall was imminent. Might wait a couple weeks and catch up when the pain’s not so fresh. I really like Do-ra, Pil-seung, his moms and Mi-ra, so I don't want to drop it entirely.

Blossoms in Adversity (completed): Beautiful historical drama that pretty much fulfilled my every wish as a viewer. You could call it fan service in the most complimentary sense. Suffice to say this will be a rewatch whenever I need a dose of positivity and women's empowerment. And it stuck the landing, too.

FINISHED:

1. GANNIBAL - This J-Drama adaptation of a webtoon series about a disgraced cop sent to a remote village ruled over by a family of cannibals is first-rate Horror if that's your kind of thing.

It ends on an abrupt cliffhanger but season 2 has been greenlighted so I'm happily waiting for that to come out.

CURRENTLY WATCHING:

1. DOCTOR SLUMP - I am watching this at a steady pace and am enjoying it still.

2. THE UNCANNY COUNTER- Picked up where I left off. It's a great series but for some reason, I can only dip into it now and then so this will take a while to finish.

3. DEAD BOY DETECTIVES - This is quite entertaining and contains guest appearances from The Endless since it is set in the Gaimanverse. Well worth a watch for Neil Gaiman fans and anyone who likes that kind of thing.

DUE TO BEGIN:

1. LOVELY RUNNER - For some reason I haven't gotten round to starting this yet even though I have seen various cute clips on social media and Beanies have been giving this a very enthusiastic thumbs up. I really should start it - it's on Viu so I have no excuse...

Currently watching :
LOVELY RUNNER: I am enjoying it.
When Camilia Blooms : It must be me..the drama is good but for some reason I'm not as much enjoying it. It's a feel good drama with of course a serial killer, I mean they're a must in every feel good ones to add story..

There's a serial killer in the story line? Ugh. Thanks for mentioning it. I'll take this off my watchlist where it's been hanging out for too long anyway.

It's a very prominent part of the drama and changes the tone/vibe drastically. It's why I had to drop it 😔

Yes it's very prominent but that wasn't my problem..I can't really pinpoint it but i think it needed more comedy elements, more romance with some in depth scenes, they dragged everything until the end..

That was why I ended up dropping it also, which was sad because there was much to like in it.

It could have been a good drama for me but until the end there wasn't much feel good in it..the only thing they consistently showed and had a good ending was about her mother..others they dragged till the end and wrapped up fast without nothing. 😢

I hope Netflix in your region doesn't do you the dirty on captions for WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS because in my region I got to the final episode and there was NO ENGLISH CAPTIONS.

Thanks Skiee. Knowing it won the Daesang, I had it in my list. I don't think I will take it up then (I do like Kang Ha-neul a lot so it's been sitting in my list). Also because it's a story of single mother and I wanted to give that a try - incidentally reminded of it when I was chatting with a fellow beanie about Romance is a bonus book.

Yes I also got a lot of good reviews that's why I tried it..But 20 episodes of 1 hr not worth it.. they had a good premise and I expected them to develop it further but they just went in circles and a lot on serial killer stuff. I also like kang haneul watched him in moon lovers (hated his character though 😹) He's good in this one too.

I may be in a kdrama slump. Nothing seems particularly interesting to the point that I don't even know or remember what's airing.
So for dramas, it's just continuing what I started weeks ago

Midnight Photo Studio. There were things I liked about it but overall, it was kinda meh and alright for me. I had a moment when I thought this might be the first character of the guy who plays Deputy Go that I didn't dislike (his character in All of Us are Dead was the worst for me and his other characters are kinda non factors to me). I was kinda surprised that cop helper ghost really and truly was destroyed and never came back. He was the 4th main character! But if stakes are set, then I guess it's only right to follow through with them. Even though it was a curse, I still liked the show more when the ghost assistants were helping the photographer run the studio.
Also, what happens with the camera while in the netherworld? Is there a ghost photographer? It's just gonna be more ghosts trying to touch/take the camera for reasons? I may need to rewatch the 1st episode to understand how the camera is supposed to work in the netherworld. And I don't get why the safe zone activated again but whatever. Happy endings. Yay.

Lovely Runner. I've gained a new appreciation for the show after seeing some of the behind the scenes videos and how much effort was put in to the show. It's weird and hard to explain but while I think the actors are doing a good job, and I can see it, I'm also kinda rolling my eyes at the execution of the story. Like the need for her to go back to the past again just because he was seriously injured (I think he was comatose?) felt kinda forced? The way she was on the statue felt forced (why would be on the horse statue backwards?). The band friend's grand gesture of cutting his hair for what ended up being nothing wasn't particularly charming to me at all. Just seemed manipulative/guilt trippy. The moments I liked most was the Superstar K moment when "Seo In Guk" was shown. That was so fun to me haha. He's one of the few people I know of with contest wins so I was like "I get that reference!" haha
And Sun Jae confronting & comforting Sol was nice. Their confession moments are often so nice. I like Sol's hair when she's older. I meant to say that before haha

I watched the new episode of Doctor Who.
They're really leaning into inclusivity and modernizing the show. I know people are complaining about it being "ruined" due to "wokeness" but I can't help thinking how cool it must be for folks to see more diversity on the show. And the new doctor has such swag to him haha. Like he's totally the cool friend you would go to for advice & comfort. I will admit, he still hasn't beat out the other doctors in my heart so far and I don't feel a need to keep going but I do see some likable elements that do make me curious.

Hello Beanies! Happy weekend!

What I have been watching these days:

_ Lovely Runner (10/16).
As we have said in the recaps, the humor in this drama sometimes is really funny and smart and other times is silly, boring and often bad taste.
But as I'm not in love with our main couple, the reason to keep watching this drama is it still makes me laugh and is very entertaining.

_ Atypical Family (2/12). Wow. I have really liked the start of this show. It's quite original, and I'm intrigued by the main characters. The music and cinematography are good and elegant. It's a curious mix of White Lotus (HBO series) + Parasites film + The Incredibles.

_ Gu Family Book (10/24). I like it, but I'll have to leave it "on hold" because...

_ ... I want to center on "Joy of Life" first season (16/46). I'm watching this AMAZING drama for the first time.

_ C-drama Will love in spring (7/21). I was looking forward to starting this one. The reviews were very good and I must say I understand why. Beautiful, moving, sweet, real...

Tonight I am going to watch Eurovision Song Contest 2024. A tradition.

Lovely Runner : This one of those few shows that I can’t take the plot story seriously but enjoying so much because of it’s comedy, bright nuance, romance and youthfulness of the leads.

Nothing Uncovered : FL is such a pain and selfish woman to the point she made me felt sorry for the cheating husband and think that the ex boyfriend is so dumb for still loving her. Also, KHN’s acting is such a downer in this show. She is not on par with JSJ nor YWJ who I think isn’t even showing his best capability in this show. The story goes downhill rapidly after episode 12. I was staying becaus of the MLs but eventually couldn’t finish the show till the end.

Frankly Speaking : So far, I like it more than I expected. It’s quite fun and light. I’m pretty sure I’ll stay for the next couple episodes.

Atypical Family : I didn’t expect the FL would be a conman and I don’t feel it was a pleasant twist. Guy is tad sad I don’t think he would survive a betrayal. Yet somehow, there is something about the show that intrigued me to wait for another episodes. I don’t really like what I’ve seen so far but still the show made me curious enough to stay.

One Spring Night : I’m so late on this show and end it on episode 10 maybe, and like PNWBF, I don’t like it. Though I love the realistic portrayal of everyday communication between people (their dialogue exchanged so natural it’s like seeing normal people talking), I don’t favor the emotional affair and not convinced with the strength of amin couple relationship. Also, they could use less bgm and “empty” scene where the actor just walking or running for like a minute. One thing I noticed, this PD didn’t use any flashback in his shows. The timeline is linear forward all along which for me quite unique and interesting when I realized. I hope Midnight Romance in Hagwon will have better story and not so typical of what this PD usually chose. I really want to like it because of JRW. I think her acting style will match with the PD preference, but again I hope the writing wouldn’t ruin it for me.

I managed to finish One spring night. It was one of my first dramas, and I didn't drop anything I started. I guess I would have dropped it today.
The OST was obnoxious, and I didn't like the FL nor her family/boyfriend/boyfriend's family...
I only liked the ML, his son and his parents.

Lovely Runner I’m so excited to see SunSol actually be the CC this coming week!! FINALLY after all the angst, we’ll get a reprieve (followed by a gut wrenching plot twist or cliff hanger I’m sure 🤡)

Just started Peacock in Wonderland because I finished Destined and New Life Begins!! Destined was my favourite out of the two because I’ve never seen a more green flag couple, nor have I ever seen a slow burn so sweet because they were a partnership in every sense of the word from day dot, even before they fell in love with one another and acknowledged it. PiW has a really interesting premise where the FL has ‘time travelled’ to a society were gender roles are reversed - women have equal rights and are also the ones running the show. So far, pretty good!

Will Love In Spring I….didn’t vibe with this as much as I wanted to, and I think that’s largely a me problem because I’m not in the right mindset to savour the slow melo feel maybe. I found myself struggling to form an emotional connection to either of the leads, even after four episodes, so 😭 Have paused to pick up at a later date.

Tried Atypical Family but didn’t feel compelled to continue even after episode 1 (which is unfair I know) so will keep an eye on the recaps and maybe do a binge or jump back in later if the plot calls to me.

I also tried Young Lady and Gentlemen but dropped - I think something about the acting of the two leads was taking me out of the drama a little?? Felt like I could SEE the script that was being said out loud, and sometimes people were so dramatic for no reason (I mean yes I suppose this is a staple of the weekend makjang genre so that’s on me).

Next on the list to try: The C-drama Love You Seven Times , very excited to watch Dare To Love Me when it drops soon and and later down the line - the promos for My Sweet Mobster have me very excited!!

Live Watch:

Lovely Runner

I will quote @javabeans because that's how I feel about this show.
"What I love about all these different iterations of the Sol/Sun-jae timeline(s) is that even when circumstances differ across various realties, their characters remain constant at their core and that’s why they keep finding their way to each other and doing everything in their power to save the other person, even at their own expense.

Oh, and plus, cupcake is back and how! How is a SML such a huge draw in a series where ML is killing it? And that too when there is absolutely NO shipping war? Well done LR team.

Picked Up:

Rain Or Shine/ Just Between Lovers

How did I miss this? I am on the second episode, and it's beautiful so far.
Lee Junho and FL (too lazy to Google names right now) make a beautiful pair. But I love the vulnerability Junho is bringing to his role. That mop of untamed hair does not hide how charismatic this guy is.

Crawl watch:

C-drama Best Choice Ever

It is not the best choice in drama for sure. I am not sure I can finish this one-note drag.

Sh**ting Star: Decided to pick it back up. I am not a fan of ML, and FL is beautiful but a bit bland, and I had decided to drop it, but it came up on my feed and drew me back. Thankfully we are out if the Aaaaaafrica phase so it's better this time around.

Dropped:

Atypical Family Can't touch this. It's just too much of everything negative.

Group Watch:

Our Blooming Youth

Not only the penultimate week's episodes are gold, the discussion board for this group watch has been exhilarating, especially this week.
@23new2kdrama is on the hunt for most beautiful kdrama saguek character and the conversation is hanbok ripping fun 😂 The contenders list makes me very happy, and from what I can see (I could be wrong), my bet is leading the race. Yay! 😂😂😂😂😂

I don't particularly dislike the ML, just that he does not seem like a lead material to me, but that's just me. I am liking the story, and I love the FL, even though she is not the best when it comes to emoting. I watched the ML in Forbidden something - the saguek - and while it was funny in places, it wasn't engrossing. He does have beautiful eyes and at least he can act, and that's enough to keep me going.

For me Forbidden Marriage is all about the FL and her freestyle way of living and love. It was hard to see her have to be so rigid while in the CP quarters but when they were alone it was better. KYD is coming out with a new show with Cha Cha's Shin Min-a. This I can not picture at all as she looks 15 years older than him. But I hope the writers give him a chance to laugh and show his personality more. His sly smile is beautiful.
I also love the SML/SFL in SStar. Their story is cute and comes out well. It really helps the show a lot

Shooting Star is even worse on rewatch, because not only the 2 leads' bad acting becomes more obvious compared to the rest of the cast, but all the plot holes start to become glaringly obvious too.

BUT I have rewatched it quite a few times because of the second couple, the friendships, the side characters, and the kisses. To be fair the 2 leads' acting becomes a lot better when they start dating. Both of them are better at acting cute than at acting serious or cool.

It's hard for me to finish the first round, so I can't ever see myself going for a second round, but thanks for the heads up. Disclaimer: Lee Seung-hyub had caught my attention the first time around, and he was the main reason I picked it back up, only to realise he is our in-house dork in Our Lovely Runner! So impressed with Lee Jun-ho in Rain or Shine/Just Between Lovers. This was an early k-drama watch for me. Sent me right to Good Manager, even more impressive. Then I hit a King The Land wall, big time. I guess every talented performer gets saddled with a clunker. It's kinda inevitable because there are so many uncontrollable ingredients that make a show great vs a miss. Here's hoping King The Land is Lee Jun-ho's miss. (I know I'm probably in the minority on that show, so apologies to those who love it.)
