On recent YouTube talk show, Actress Oh Nara talked about the career gap between what she wants to do and what people want to see:

“There are things viewers want. No matter how much I want to be in a romance or take a character with a sad background, if no one wants it, they won’t watch it. Our job is over if no one is interested. Since we need to get attention, I think I will eventually get a chance if I continue working hard doing things that viewers want to see.”

Many actors are trapped in this paradox. In order to expand the public’s perception of themselves, they need to get the attention of the public, often branching out to do variety shows, plays, music, YouTube channels or social media activities.

In a MDL article, when asked if she feels pressured about receiving attention like her latest movie character, Shin Hye Sun replied, "It's burdensome to get attention, but I'm also upset when I don't get it (laughs). Of course, it's good to receive a lot of attention considering my profession, but in other aspects, it's a bit burdensome." Despite that, the actress said she feels like she is blending in well. "At first, showing myself [to people] was the most difficult thing. While appearing on variety shows for promotional purposes, I've definitely gotten used to it a lot more than before, and I'm not as nervous as I used to be."

Regarding whether she actively engages on social media to gain good attention as an actress, she said, "I do try hard, but I don't enjoy it. I don't see it as my duty to show [people] this [or that], but rather, I post with gratitude because there are fans who like it when I do."

Shin Hye Sun, who is known to be a homebody, commented on this aspect of her personality: "Sometimes I feel embarrassed by this side of myself. I'm not young anymore, but I still feel like I'm living life without much enthusiasm. It seems like I'm just living a simple life without doing much, so nowadays, I'm trying to live more energetically by exercising more."

It truly sucks that actors are stuck in this box especially with a career like acting. Acting is supposed to be a creative and collaborative outlet. What actor (well, I guess I'm talking more about people who view it as a craft or just have a genuinely love and enjoyment for it) wants to held in place, not allowed to try new things with their acting.

I know of Western actors who've stayed with roles on series for a long time and it can be a double edged sword. Some of the benefits is the steady income, building your character (highs & lows) over time, and if they get along with their colleagues, it can almost be like a second family. The downside is that it can lead to typecasting and creative fatigue. (There's more downsides but I'll just stick with these haha).

I've seen some actors say that they kinda regretted staying with a show for too long or that the show ran for too long.

I know it's different with SK since shows have set airing period but I think it's similar with the actors having to the same type of shows or characters for years on end.

While I didn't personally mind it (cause it's not like I *have* to watch them), I remember how on here people were commenting/complaining about it being the season of legal dramas. Before that might've medical dramas. There was also the revenge season.

The same way viewers may get fatigued, I would imagine actors feel the same way when they get the SAME type of scripts or offers over and over again solely because that's what audiences want to see at the moment.

And I didn't even touch on the parasocial element forcing everyone to have to show themselves to appeal to the masses.

Sigh, I'm annoyed haha

I was watching old episodes of Running Man and I came across an episode that aired in 2019. I was kinda surprised to come across it because HALF the guests ended up in scandals like 2 months later! I wasn't even sure about the year until it was mentioned the guy was going to do his military service and I thought "didn't he do his military service to evade his legal issues?"

Any guesses on who I'm talking about?

Answer: Seungri (of Big Bang & The Burning Sun scandal)

I was confused and surprised to see him because I thought even murmurs of allegations of what he could've possibly been involved with would've gotten him cancelled. I don't know the timeline of events, as I said I thought he enlisted because of his legal issues (even if the plan was to go that year, I thought he went even earlier or something. Again, I don't know the timeline or specifics). Anyhoo, I think there might've been the slightest weirdness because Seungri mentioned the members didn't cheer as much for him as the previous guy when he was introduced. I could be wrong. I actually don't even remember much about him on the episode.

Same with the other 2 guests who would end up in scandals *MONTHS* later. I again don't know the timeline but I vaguely recognized the names from a Youtube video about the scandal. The issue was one girl group member accused the leader of the girl group of bullying her. Netizens sided with her and the accused bully got massive backlash and hate to the point that she retired from industry. Until it was discovered that maybe the accuser was lying or exaggerating and continued to do weird things that lost her public support as well instability with agencies.

What surprised me was that BOTH of these people, accuser and accused, were on the same episode!

Any guesses who?
Answer: Mina and Jimin of AOA

I know the episode was probably filmed November or December but I just found that crazy timing; the fact that all 3 were on the same episode and then only a couple of months later they would all be embroiled in career ruining scandals.
I'm also kinda surprised that episode was still available for the same reason. There has been times when I looked for a RM episode and it wasn't available.

Bully logic is just so bizarre to me sometimes

Like in 18 Again, the guy bullies his crush's twin brother. Why would you bully your crush's twin brother? How does that make sense to you? Is that some weird version of pulling pigtails?
Honestly, I'm not sure about the timeline, whether he was crushing on her at the same time he was bullying the brother, but still, how do you even have the audacity to like someone AND publicly confess to them after you've bullied their brother?

More bully logic that annoys me: the obsessed bullies. Honestly, one of the things I hated the most to the point of disgust in The Glory and All of Us are Dead was the bullies' obsession with ruining their victims lives. Like it's not enough to harass them at school, you have to show up at their home? It's not enough that a freaking zombie apocalypse is happening, you have to hunt the guy who bested you (after you wronged him first) until you both die together (possibly. Fairly certain they both died. I don't remember the ending haha).

It's truly something that more people who are bullied don't snap especially in dramas where that could be like vicarious revenge or something.

I will never understand how anybody could ship Shi-ah (Roh Jeong-eui) with Ja-sung (Hwang In-youp) in 18 Again. He bullied her twin brother. Who would she choose -- her handsome, sweetest best friend in the world who has been in love with her since they were kids, is class president and the smartest student in school (smart enough to figure out Woo-young was actually Dae-young), and is doted on by her dad? Or a literal bully??

Ofc I'm watching HEROES - and actually enjoying it for reasons I did not expect to. More about it tomorrow.

Regarding JOL tho... I've yet to even advance much with Season1, it's probably just not my kind of story(((

Also will probably skip first FOX SPIRIT MATCHMAKER - acting in the trailer left me unimpressed *evil grin* So HEROES probably remains the only drama for me in May, unless something else unexpectedly drops.

Looking forward on your thoughts about Heroes. I am considering watching it. 😊

3

@jillian - in short: IT'S GOOD! 6 episodes in it's an interesting and well-made non-idol drama of action-investigation-politics genre. There's documentary footage included! In fact, I'm a bit puzzled how then-rookie Yuning even got a prominent part in such a heavy production - thanks to his stunts, perhaps? Or none of them flower boys was willing to take a bearded tanned Central Plains nomad role...

4

You got me at "prominent" role. 😊 now I have to see him as bearded tanmed Central Plains nomad.

2

I'm going to make room for both. I want to support our AJTL couples. "Heroes" for Ning Yuan Zhou and "Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Love in Pavilion" for Ren Ruyi.
I've never been a fan of Yang Mi, so I'm looking forward to Liu Shi Shi's show.

4

@jillian unlike in EB he's indeed a proper SML here, with a fitting screentime and plot importance.

Btw I'm now wondering how he'd look in full Qing styling - yunno, with THAT hair... He probably never dares, but I'm CURIOUS!

@kiara her installment looks more promising than the first to me. If nothing else, action will deliver))) And that aqua green color scheme is uniquely pretty. Folks say that the most interesting story is actually the last one - with CY and LYT - but it's gonna be a while before that drops for sure.

4

“Heroes”… Seriously, every time I THINK there’s a wait time for Liu Yu Ning’s next drama and he’ll be working on more music in the meantime, he proves me wrong 😂 The guy secretly films and films and films and films and no one even knows—least of me. Whatever skills he has being able to keep things so under wraps, he’s honestly gotta pass that skill and knowledge over to Xiao Zhan, really. Seems like no matter what Xiao Zhan does, people WILL find out, least of his stalker fans uuuggghhhh

I didn’t know LYN’s HEROES (2024) was in the works and just got sprung. Even though MDL indicates that this drama is available on iQIYI I just checked and it is not available so I think that info is not correct.

5

It's not exactly because he's been filming in secret, but rather he was unlucky enough to collect a lot of unreleased projects on shelves and only now they're slowly starting to see the light (TPOB when?!). This HEROES (I'm still trying to digest that he has 2 dramas with such title... pls stop there, 3rd would be not funny at all!) in particular was filmed ages ago - 2+ years, before he got really known as an actor, so paparazzi of all origins were probably just not as hard on him atm... There really isn't much footage from back then. Compare to him filming RIGHT NOW - despite production strictly banning any leaks from the actual set, we still get them daily.

Lol at passing skill wish. Might as well hold a lecture about handling private life "scandals" with class while at it - many of his colleagues direly need that.

7

@marcusnyc20 iQiyi info is correct, but only for a few SEA countries, I believe. Main platform for the drama is Tencent, it's their in-house production. Not sure about other potential distributors - this wasn't a hyped project, to put it mildly, so depends on drama's performance - but they release 1 episode every day on Tencent's YT as well, first 3 are already available there.

4

@gikata DB ate my reply twice now, so I’m not even gonna try anymore. I’ll just say this:
I follow LYN’s music more than I do his acting career, so I don’t know that he’s actually got so many dramas stockpiled and ready to be released, but I’m excited for him and glad that his acting career has taken off 😊

4

@bebeswtz let me do a not-soquick breakdown:

- he has 7 dramas in total to be released as of today - 6 filmed, 1 in process;

- among them 5 are fully/almost done and ready to drop anytime plus 1 in early post-production, so we won't see it before 2025 for sure;

- among those 7 he's ML in 4, SML/3ML (it's complicated - billing and screentime don't match) in 1 and doing cameos in the remaining 2;

- 1 of his ML dramas is currently in costar's tax scandal limbo so no one knows when we'll get it, if ever;

- all this hella complicated math leaves us with 4 more potential dramas of his THIS YEAR ONLY. Perhaps 5, but far less likely. 3 are 90% guaranteed, unless something drastic happens. Stay tuned)))

6

I'm so excited!

Licensing and availability of dramas is still so mysterious. I like seeing dramas made available on a number of legal platforms around the world. I am not a fan of exclusivity. For example the upcoming M/T KBS drama DARE TO LOVE ME will be available both on Viki US and Netflix (outside the US). Imo that is the way to go.

So @kiara now I can ask. I haven’t watched any of the trailers for JOL2 or the release of the shorter original JOL. I said before that in one sense JOL might be considered a ‘virtual reality’ drama becasue of the contemporary time frame introduction and scientific references to the future if my memory serves. Was that contemporary time frame introduction in JOL eliminated in the new version?

Thanks. I should do a little bit of refreshing one way or the other.

O/T Zhang Ruo Yun anecdote. During ZRY’s (wonderful high school drama) THE HOPE (Youku)’s run during late 23/early 24 while on a THE HOPE promo tour he was asked when he thought JOL2 would be released. (Now THE HOPE is a story about ZRY’s oddball group of seniors studying for the Gaokao (the super nerve wracking national college entrance exam that high school seniors in China take).)
Fwir, with all kinds of qualifications he said it might be available in June (well it is a little early) but he added if it arrives while the seniors are studying for the big exam they should NOT watch JOL 2 but keep studying lol. It was funny.

3

Wow, that just made me shed a tear or two! 🥲 It's been a tough couple of days IRL, I'm exhausted, and my frustration with the distribution issues for JOL2 were disproportionality bothering me. Thank you so much for tagging me with this fantastic news @marcusnyc20!

Happy Friday, Beanies! Few days ago me and @kiara had a convo about LYN's English thanks to him flexing quite a bit of that in his newest OST, so I decided it would be a good weekly theme. Not gonna rate his skills myself – I'm not a native speaker and my own pronunciation still sucks because I read and write a lot, but hardly talk... you get it. Anyways, cut the boy some slack, he's doing his best – when not pretending to be really bad with a purpose to look cute lol. Does that even work btw? At our age?! *highly skeptical*

This is the OST in question for currently airing MEN IN LOVE – no idea if the show itself is any good, but song is beautiful! MV (probably spoilery):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rLRaiJFPeA

And lyrics with subs – bless the translator, she is madly productive:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z47Ci8eg0UM

Next is covers galore. Gotta say his choices of tracks to sing is a bit... cheesy interesting, to say the least. He's not all that into western metal, isn't he? Or maybe just lacks proper exposure to it. I can give him a few lectures if needed, tutoring fee negotiable... Anyways, what he IS into is saccharine boysbands stuff – darling, your age shows, stop exposing our generation pls lmao!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLBLCi-NcbM

Do you think I'm joking? Not at all. Anyway, it's curious that he chose this track out of all their repertoire... or maybe I shouldn't be surprised, this is really his style lyrics-wise.
https://youtu.be/LJnCx30VLts?si=oowg80FS0hclmZkN

He's not averse to more classical stuff either, tho not without some remixing – was it Chinese version in the middle? And duo one? Or he added a completely different song for fun? *blinks in confusion*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bODsMIci2fg

Or even more classical stuff – gotta admit, this I wasn't expecting in the slightest, esp that KO with “darling, kiss me” - rude, sir, very rude! Comment section is a riot - all the Hao Du comments)))

Modern hits are also on the menu – mostly from female artists somehow. At least this one is appropriate for his vocals... In case if you didn't notice, remembering lyrics is not his forte, but he has tons of fun with the song anyway – almost too much)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPh4iOcGvK8

Never expected that, part 2. Cannot comment on the alleged change of lyrics – is his accent too thick here or he's really guilty? Totally possible with him ofc. This also the hardest I've ever seen him trying to actually play the guitar lol.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjSEPpUcK-E

Finally a male artist's work again – and arguably the most relatable song today I'd kill for a nap rn. Not for him ofc, man wouldn't know what the laziness is even if it round-kicked him in the face...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_XxgGKVFE8

I wanted to wrap up with the video of him roasting fans for using English pickup lines on him – since he's long 300% banned any of that in Chinese – but couldn't find it and my head already hurts a lot... maybe next time.

P.S. Remember my eternal “give the man trashy romcom CEO role” agenda? Well, apparently he already played one – in some CF (if anyone has the video, pls tag me, I'd sell souls for it! could only gather it was 3 years ago), looking unsurprisingly fire. Blue necktie and SPECS too! *fans herself* Pls, Ning-ge, do it again for real, just once! You're gonna cringe, but we will APPRECIATE the hell out of your efforts in return, I promise!

Thank you, chingu!!!
That's one thing we all have in common. English is not our native language. 😄 Peachey Blossom is wonderful! I love her MDL reviews, too.
He doesn't have much of an accent in "No Matter" compared to "You Raise Me Up" 5 years ago.
I love learning different languages through music! I picked up a few Manchu phrases after listening to a few native songs, thanks to "My Dearest." Mandarin is more difficult for me to pronounce. You'd roll on the floor laughing if you heard me. Haha
Do you have one of him singing a traditional song? I tried searching, but no luck.

Yes, he probably studied. Which is interesting, since he clearly said before that he has little interest in going fully global, won't open overseas studio or take an English name etc... Even his few collabs with western artists are pretty much him singing his parts in Chinese.

You mean any folk song or something not in Mandarin specifically? I bet he did at some point - are there even genres left he didn't try yet? - but I can't recall anything rn, esp since I wouldn't know which songs are truly folk and which are just retro. I had a video somewhere of him singing mid-20s century stuff on a show, but idk about something even older than that... I'll share if I find something.

He was also praised for his Cantonese multiple times, I believe. And there's also Korean and Japanese stuff... His dusted Big Bang covers probably won't gather much audience here, right?

He’s not classically trained in music, but I think that’s where the beauty of his musical interests comes out:

For the reason that he’s not classically trained in music, he isn’t “stuck” or confined nor is his way of thinking about music conditioned to what he would turn to had he been classically and formally trained— I think of Charlie Zhou Shen when I think of the new and present generation of classically trained C-singers haha
At the same time, for the reason that LYN is not classically trained, I applaud him for the knowledge and love that he has for music to begin with 🥰 Who knew that a guy who went to culinary school and whom began posting music covers online would have come so far and is one of China’s most beloved singers of this generation and one of the most coveted OST singers for drama producers?? 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻

NOTES FROM 9TAILEDVIXEN'S 1ST WEEK BACK FROM HER TRAVELS:

1. Bits and Bobs

My twisted ankle is still a bit sore and I'm still limping. So I'm adopting a 'wait and see' approach to when I can go back to Aerial Yoga because I've noticed that every time I absolutely have to walk for a while on it (e.g. doing grocery shopping, running errands etc), it gets worse.

Jetlag's easing more slowly than expected but at least every day I'm waking up about 30 minutes earlier than the day before. This is what happens when one hasn't travelled long-haul across more than 2 times zones for years.

2. Hidden J-Drama Gem

I have just finished GANNIBAL on Disney+ and it is a most excellent J-Drama Horror mini-series revolving around a family of cannibals. It came out a couple of years ago and last year season 2 has been green-lit. Hopefully it'll be out soon since season 1 ended on a very abrupt cliffhanger.

3. This Week in Korean Women's News

(a) Korean women are fascinated by Min Hee Jin's battle against K-pop patriarchy

Min's clash with Hybe management over financial and creative control of a sub-label last week caused the music company to lose nearly $800 million in market capitalization. Young Korean women were also inspired by her criticism of her male superiors, knowing that in Korea, women make up only 6% of senior executives in the country's 100 largest companies.

Youn Hye-shin, 31, who works in the education sector in Seoul, told the Financial Times: “ What Min is going through is what many of us experience every day in our hierarchical, male-dominated corporate culture. She says out loud what we dream of saying."

https://altselection.com/en/korean-women-are-fascinated-by-min-hee-jin%27s-battle-against-k-pop-patriarchy/

(b) 20 major S. Korean conglomerates have no female inside directors

A recent report showed that women account for only 3.2 percent of all inside directors at the biggest companies in South Korea.

There are 787 inside directors and 850 outside directors on the boards of the 30 largest South Korean conglomerates and their 298 affiliates according to the local market analysis firm Leaders Index. There are 174 female outside directors and 25 female inside directors, each accounting for 20.5 percent and 3.2 percent of the respective totals.

"This shows that (the companies) hired a woman as an outside director for the diversity requirement, but their operations are still centered on men," the researchers at the Leaders Index noted.

Reports have indicated that despite numerous attempts to have diversity in the leading roles in the business sector in South Korea, female higher-ups in companies are still exceedingly rare.

Does anyone else play "Six Degrees of Wikipedia" with K-dramas? Such as, if you're on one drama's Wikipedia page and want to get to another drama's Wikipedia page, so you click through the actors' and dramas' links to get there?

For example, if I'm on Queen of Tears and want to get to Lovely Runner: I click Moon Seong-hyun who played teen Baek Hyun-woo, then Shooting Stars where he played teen Gong Tae-sung, then Kim Young-dae - Extraordinary You - Kim Hye-yoon - Lovely Runner

Another example, Frankly Speaking to The Atypical Family: click Kang Han-na - My Roommate Is a Gumiho - Jang Ki-yong - The Atypical Family

The goal is not to get there within six clicks. There are no winners or losers. I just do it because I'm too lazy to type the title or it's too long (Chief Detective 1958) or too common (Hide).

There are multiple ways to get there (Frankly Speaking - Go Kyung-pyo - Reply 1988 - Lee Hye-ri - My Roommate Is a Gumiho - Jang Ki-yong - The Atypical Family), and the character actors or senior actors who are in every drama would find it faster, but it tests my memory on which actors have been in which dramas.

I rarely use Wiki for dramas - at least not that Wiki, Drama- one is more familiar to me since they do OST info compilations. The original one has its perks, of course - for example, they also post characters names in original language, which can be super entertaining when combined with a decent dictionary)))

You mean DramaWiki? OG Wikipedia has OST info compilations like Lovely Runner OST. The good thing about OG Wikipedia is they have chart info for popular OSTs like Queen of Tears OST. And their ratings are the best with highest in red and lowest in blue.

But DramaWiki's "List of Dramas aired by Network by Year" is so convenient. And AsianWiki is obviously the best with pictures of the characters from the drama. MyDramaList uses the actors' professional headshots, which are sometimes unidentifiable.

5

@panshel yes. OG Wiki is good, but DramaWiki makes separate pages for OSTs and provides more info than just titles/artists/track lengths - like composers/lyricists/producers etc. Heck, they even include cover photos for each soundtrack's single, if it's possible!

MDL's policy regarding actors photos is a mess, especially since the end result often depends simply on whether there is a mod which stans the said celeb... otherwise good freaking luck to EVER change that one horrible pic everyone wants gone, no amount of better AND rules abiding editing suggestions would help!

Every drama-related site has a nightmare for search. Every single one.

I'm always typing a name that is impossible to mess up like Miss Korea or Lee Min Ho or Goblin, and start clicking from there.

And on Asianwiki even that doesn't work because no matter what I search it will only answer no entries found. I have to play the six degrees from the currently airing shows on their homepage.

And don't get me started on Hancinema. Instead of a search results page it brings up a pop-up window which seems to have the drama you want, but the click takes you somewhere else! Ugh!

Bwahaha, I don't even bother, honestly - scrolling tens of pages under drama/actor tag is way faster.

6

@gikata Right? That works if you can find your way to an actor or drama's tag. Of course you have to use the exact name and spelling right down to the punctuation. But still, I can't count the number of times I've searched for a person or a show, come up with nothing, found it via the Six Degrees method or just googling "dramabeans+whatever," and then found that I had spelled it the same way DB did in the first place. 🙄 Maybe I used the left shift key instead of the right one.

8

@elinor I usually go to the latest article I remember seeing the title/name I need in for tags...

7

I have been begging DB for years to completely remove all those useless dramas/celebs/recaps/news tabs which just lead to hundreds of pages of terrible search and nail-biting connection, and just bring back the good old "tag index" link which does everything in just one fast click-scroll-click... Sigh.

6

@gikata

https://www.dramabeans.com/about-old/tag-index/

Bookmark this link. Bestest ever feature that DB ever had. And they are inexplicably doing their best to bury it.

9

@midnight oooh, you're doing heaven's work here, BLESS YOU)))

4

@gikata You're welcome!

The link used to be on the blog homepage before the site remake. Then it completely vanished although the page still existed and got updated regularly!

For years I googled "dramabeans tag index" to find anything on the site. Then I learned to bookmark it. I really really don't know why it is being kept hidden. Unless it is because it creats way less pages and results in way less ad opportunity?

5

@midnight shhh, not so loud, this is supposed to be secret)))

Lol recently on my fan wall I commented that if I was Bill Gates I would buy AsianWiki just to scrap and replace the search function. I would also get rid of that annoying ad thingy.

Perhaps @gikata while I am at it I should buy MDL and do the same there.

Omg yes, love playing this game but also just doing it for fun to see where it'll take me - it goes to show what a small world it is when you're scrolling through a supporting cast and then click, click, click you find out they were also in another drama you've watched or they're BFFS with an actor and you had no idea.

I do play this, but I call it "two degrees of dramaland".
It started with the friend that introduced me to kdramas. We would exchange pictures of actors as good morning messages (we live in different countries) so as to increase our abilities to recognise them. When we became good in distinguishing between the clones, the game became "how can we go from A to B". We mostly play with leads as starting points (of dramas that we have seen) so it might be biased by being a fraction of dramaland, but we usually find a link with max 2 intermediate persons.
Yes, we are dramanerds. Also, it's good practice for memory. Though MDL is of great help (often).

HI OT peeps! I'm just here to sing the accolades of Lovely Runner. You know how sometimes you KNOW something will be good from the very first episode of a kdrama? I had that with Goblin, and I had that with Lovely Runner. Because of this, it's catapulted itself into my top 5 dramas. I don't really care how it ends. It has exceeded every expectation I had. I'm all about time slip coming of age dramas and this one is the best I've seen. If you're not watching it, do. And if you haven't seen the crazy amazing chemistry (even behind the scenes) of the main leads, do yourself a favor and watch them. Apparently, the last scene of the last episode (the 3rd or 4th confession scene-- Sunjae keeps confessing his feelings that he's a pro now!) that has about a million gifs online (and that's not even an exaggeration). Byeon woo-seok opened a WEVERSE community and within couple hours had over 200K subscribers in it. And he started the show with about 2M followers on social media and now has 7M. I don't know any other actor that has amassed so many new fans in such a short amount of time in the span of 1 show. It must be a record of some sort.

A real life kdrama text conversation...
Background: I've been wallowing in Lovely Runner feels all week/month, and my bestie from college, my college ex-boyfriend and I all still communicate semi-regularly. We're all happily married with kids, so just talk about the "good ole days" a lot. But this week I legit swooned with something he texted in our group text. My son and my bestie's are graduating seniors this year and my son will be attending our alma mater, while hers will be closer to her in Colorado attending a very good engineering school. She was feeling nostalgic, I guess and sent us some pictures from our yearbook when I was a freshman, ex was a sophomore.
Bestie: Look what I found
(Picture of me and another girl checking our mailboxes, waiting for the commons to open)
Ex-boyfriend: That was in the yearbook, right?
Ex-boyfriend: I was a big fan of [Ally] back then.
Me: (checking texts between patients at work) " ... " *SWOON, double take, all of it because I probably didn't even know him at all my freshman year. We didn't date until his junior year?*
Bestie: Yep! Good memory. I'm not in the year books.
(Texts pics of two more head shots of us)
Ex-boyfriend: Maye the yearbook staff were all science majors.
(Ex and I were in the science department while my bestie was an architecture major)
Bestie: Right?!
Me (finally, an hour later because, really, what should I say?): Wow, that's crazy. My hair used to be so shiny. LOL! You're not fan anymore, [Ex]? LOL again.
Ex-boyfriend: I'm your supporter, of course, but trying not to be a fanatic.
Bestie: LOL emoji.
Me: Emoji of smiling person with one teardrop.

Moral of the story: Feelings are not so fleeting, and even an ex can give you butterflies after almost 30 years sometimes.
2nd Moral: Still happily married to...

... the best husband of all. And wouldn't trade him for a million swoons (unless he lets me leave him for Gong Yoo one day--haha).

I have been watching kdramas religiously for almost eight years. About two weeks ago, I experienced a Kdrama slump . At the time, I was only watching two Korean dramas which for me is a huge low. I had a lot of free time so why didn't I want to watch more Korean dramas? Is there such a thing as kdrama fatigue?

After the underwhelming and extremely long final episode of QoT, I was definitely feeling atigued. I thought I was weighed down by the constant Korean dramas with disappointing endings and similar rom-com storylines. I felt I needed something fresh and new; a palate cleanser. So I started the Chinese drama When I fly towards you and the Thai BL Only Boo, and in the process of watching these, I think that I finally remember exactly why I started watching Korean dramas. It turns out that I didn't need something different. After all "new and special" were not the reasons Korean dramas became my first love.

It was the little heart-flattering moments. The ones that bring two people who are strangers into something much more. When I was just a little kdrama fan baby, it was that high I chased. I just needed to remember what made Korean dramas so special. Though I have not completely gotten out of my kdrama slump, I am learning to fall in love with them again.

Any thoughts? Kdrama recommendations?

Yes, we all get entertainment slumps. I have not started a new series since HIDE finished.

In these periods, I tend to see if there are any k-movies available, watch korean variety or YouTube content or actually get out into the wilderness and go to a movie theater (current offerings are slim pickings).

Required fields are marked *

Aww I'm sorry to hear you're in a bit of a slump but glad to hear that you're reconnecting with the reasons why you started watching K-dramas in the first place!

Sometimes that step away is so needed to remember the little heart fluttering moments, as you so eloquently put it. For me especially, going through drama slumps helped me somewhat recalibrate my perspective of what it means to be a fan - taking a break doesn't invalidate past joy, nor is 'being a fan' dictated by religiously watching K-dramas non stop. It's okay to be like 'I'm not in the mood/this isn't really doing it for me' and then try different things - there will likely always be a new (or sometimes old) drama around the corner that makes you want to press play again.

Plus it's not always a you problem right, sometimes the fatigue might be just because the latest offerings just aren't that great, or you've been emotionally drained out by horrible writing/lacklustre endings/a draggy plot. Like you, during these periods, I tend to either explore a different language catalogue (K-drama slumps always coincide with my C-drama binge eras or sometimes my English language watch list finally gets dusted off), switching to documentaries/reality shows/survival programs/YT binge, or if that's not really piquing my interest either, then just another hobby all together.

Yes, it is legitimately a thing. Kdrama fatigue is as legit and common as is other fatigue, like communication fatigue, work fatigue...

If you tell us more about what you're currently into, like romcom, melo, sageuk,... it may be easier for beanies to make recommendations?!

Sunday is Mother's Day in the U.S., so first I would like to wish Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there. But second, since this is a kdrama discussion site I would like to say one thing I continually lament is kdramas' treatment of mothers. Oh, of course there are loving mothers common in plots, but often they are so saintly as to be unrealistic. Far more impactful are mothers who are grasping, or comically foolish, or who insist on setting their daughters up for blind dates with idiots, or who favor their sons over their more worthy daughters. Even more common are the mothers who cause their sons trauma. What I call "Mom-traums" are the biggest way kdramas employ their general obsession with psychology. Either the Mother is hard-driving for material gain and verbally abusive or her son; or she is utterly neglectful and abandoned the son; or she was foolish enough to step out on the street or ride in a car and be killed by a white truck, haunting the son for the rest of his life.

An example of typical portrayal of mothers in kdramas was the recent Dr. Slump. The one Mom was portrayed as loving, but comically and often drunkenly clueless--she was the biggest source of "laughs" in this painfully unfunny rom com. Meanwhile, the ML Mom's coldness and neglect not only contributed to her son's depression, the show imputed that she caused his beloved "hyung" to try to kill him, steal the FL’s research and try to destroy them both— because she treated the hyung with contempt. Worst of all, the “hyung” was sobbingly forgiven by the ML and the show--the ML's Mother was not, and remained the ultimate villain, absent to the end.

I know this caricatured portrayal of mothers is not unique to kdramas, and is part of a general contempt for independent women and their interests around the world. In fact, even the celebration of mothers in the U.S., though its origins are credited to a woman, Anna Jarvis, received impetus from conservative male fears that the "new woman" of the turn of the twentieth century was going to abandon her proper place in the home. Of course, Mother's Day also got a boost from department stores, flower and candy merchants, who saw in this celebration a chance for greater sales, and we certainly see this in the U.S. today!

Even with all this, I think most of us celebrate our mothers, and mothers in general, not just their procreative role, or their traumatizing one, but their remarkable influence in shaping society for the better. My own mother was a difficult woman. (She is still alive, but suffering from Alzheimer’s, she has been on the surface intellectually blank, and has not recognized me for 5 years, so I will speak in the past tense.) She was resentful at the opportunities she was denied as a woman, and the male condescension she endured daily at work, and even sometimes from my Father, and she often took that out on her sons. She was, in some respects, a kdrama Mom, with her constant nagging and her often lacerating sarcasm when we failed to meet her expectations. Still, her standards were not just applied to success in school or in a career, but also in demanding we treat everyone with respect. Any psychological trauma I’ve experienced over the decades was not stemming from her high pressure parenting, but rather from my own failure to live up to the moral behavior that she rightfully insisted upon.

I would like to see more kdramas portray mothers not as loving saints, nor as comically inept, nor as vicious harpies, but rather as most Moms are in real life—complicated, imperfect, but generally hard working, loving, and positive influences on their children’s lives.

thank you, i agree! moms are not saints, but we can have superpowers that even surprise us, when it comes to our children's safety, we have split-second reflexes.

my mother was interesting, she drove me "crazy" for most of my life, but i loved her dearly (i'm the last of 5 kids, so i believe we made her crazy - LOL!). i can still hear her nattering at me about this or that, especially when i'm cooking one of her recipes...

don't be so hard on yourself. your mom could only do so much to shape and mold you (we do that, but of course it is up to the child to determine one's self, yes?)... you have free will, and if you made some mistakes, you can fix them. it's about learning how to become your own person, some of us have to learn the hard way, some don't make their own choices, some never learn from their mistakes... mothering comes with no warranties, we can only do so much. hopefully most of it is raising our children to feel loved and cherished and to find their own "family" to live out their lives with, after we are gone...

also, condolences about the Alzheimer's in your family. i had a paternal aunt who developed early onset alzheimer's at the age of 50. she lived another 19 years, but in a nursing home for much of those last years.

there ARE times when - surprisingly - alzheimer patients "snap out of it" temporarily. i witnessed this with my aunt, near the end of her life. by then she was in a wheelchair, sleeping most of the day - but there were 2 times she "woke up" when i was visiting. she couldn't speak, but her eyes opened, her hands started shaking (she was trying to move them), so i took her hands. she squeezed them and looked right into my eyes with such clarity -- i KNEW she was cognizant! i was talking about her daughters and grandchildren, and she wanted me to know that she heard me.

it was fleeting, and heartbreaking… i cried all the way home after those visits.

we have to monitor ourselves, as the disease runs in families, right? let's hope they make progress on finding a cure or aide to the progressive disease...

Happy Mother's Day too to mothers on MDL and to children who are planning to celebrate with their moms.
On mother's potrayal on Kdrama or any other dramas, I think we generally have a huge range. Mothers are humans too, so there's the good saint-like, and then there's the evil or negligent ones and then there's the all-in-the-middle.
It does pains me sometimes to watch when ML or FL subjected to abuse (verbal or emotional or physical) from their mom or dad.
Lastly I bought flowers too for my mom, cant wait to bring home to her today. I think I'm more understanding of her now after being a mom myself compared to when i was in my teens and early 20s.

An incredible sight. Please do yourselves a favour and read this summary to see the electron microscope image!
“ A millimetre of brain in spectacular detail
Researchers have created an exquisitely detailed atlas of a tiny piece of one woman’s brain, which had been removed during surgery to treat her epilepsy. The sample was cut into thousands of nanometre-thick slices and each was imaged with electron microscopes. AI tools then classified different structures and cells, and created a 3D reconstruction of the sample. “I remember this moment, going into the map and looking at one individual synapse from this woman’s brain, and then zooming out into these other millions of pixels,” says neuroscientist and study co-author Viren Jain. “It felt sort of spiritual.”

IT'S EUROVISION WEEK!

I was so psyched at the middle act in semi-final 2, I can't see how they can possible top this in the finals. I mean, Kääijä! I was soo angry that he didn't win last year, I didn't even like Loreen's song and was already bummed it won in Sweden. That said, Petra Mede is born to lead EVC.
There are so many good songs this year. My personal favourite is Great Britain's Olly Alexander with his song 'Dizzy', but I think Croatia will take the win. Or the Netherlands. They are songs easily remembered and sung along to with great stages. Switzerland is good too but it's not party enough. And we were cheated of the party in 2023.

I wrote this on my fanwall but got no responses so I'm hoping more people see this and respond. This is for the folks who have watched Weak Hero Class 1 (and remembers these scenes)

Why did Suho stop Bumseok from attacking the bully with the mic but he didn't stop Sieun from beating Yeong Bin with the book?

I get that Suho's whole philosophy about fighting is "don't cross the line" but what made those situations different?

I don't know if I would call them theories but I have some possible suggestions. 1. Suho actually witnessed the mounting bullying & teasing that Si Eun experienced so he felt the payback was fair and justified 2. Suho could tell Bumseok wanted to blungeon the bully (potenially killing or seriously injuring him) and Suho didn't want to be a party to that especially since it had been Suho's idea to confront them in the first place. 3. Si Eun handled his bully/bullies by himself yet Bum Seok was reliant on Suho's presence which made Suho feel responsible for the situation.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I think it's because the whole class was in shock that top student Si-eun would do something like that. Su-ho didn't know Si-eun at the time and was asleep when he first hit Yeong-bin with the book, but he did step in to stop him before Si-eun stepped on Yeong-bin's face.

While the situation at the karaoke, the three of them were already friends, so Su-ho stopped Beom-seok because he didn't want him to get into trouble. It's true that it was Su-ho's idea to confront the bullies, but he just wanted to get them to apologize. I don't think Su-ho expected Beom-seok to turn bad.

First, thank you so much for responding😇

I don't know if Suho was sleeping at that point. Seems he would've woken up once Si Eun slammed the desk. He woke up just from people talking before. I don't remember if Suho was shown after that; I know Bum Seok was shown because he looked over to Yeong Bin (sidenote: I only noticed this recently but kudos to Park Jihoon for the eye twitch that truly looked like he snapped. I feel like I've seen that more in cartoons & anime than in live action to symbolize a character snapping).

I don't think anyone expected Bum Seok to turn bad (even though there were red flag moments before the karaoke room.

That's one of the things that always gets me: Suho never did anything different, it's just Bum Seok's perception to it that changed. Suho stopped Si Eun in the same way, saying the same words (and even Si Eun said Bum Seok's line of "who are you to stop me") and Bum Seok *saw* that himself.

You're very welcome! 🤗 About your second sentence ("for the folks who remember these scenes"), I had to rewatch these scenes to refresh my memory and basically swooned over Choi Hyun-wook the whole time. When Su-ho threw Si-eun to the ground, when Su-ho told Beom-seok, "I'll get them to apologize. Call them.", when Su-ho grabbed the bully by the collar and pushed him against the wall. This is his Best. Character. Ever. Choi Hyun-wook needs to always act as these types of characters.

You're right, Su-ho did wake up when Si-eun slammed his desk. Beom-seok had asked to hit the bully once because he didn't mean his apology, which Beom-seok did, and Su-ho didn't stop him, but then the bully hit him back. So Su-ho allowed both boys to fight their own battles against their bullies and only stopped them before the situations escalated.

Beom-seok always had a victim complex, and not only did he see Si-eun's situation, but Beom-seok was the one who drugged Si-eun himself.

I was gonna say that I wondered if Suho hadn't stopped Si Eun from going overboard, would Si Eun have eventually turned his anger on Bum Seok for drugging him in the first place?

I never thought about it before but as I was typing the comment, it came to mind.

Both Suho & Si Eun were about de escalation (in their own ways) which is part of the reason I think they got along.

Bum Seok's bully hitting him back is certainly a difference haha. When Si Eun hits his bullies, they don't hit him back but beg for him to wait a minute haha.

I think, on some level, Suho could see a difference between Si Eun & Bum Seok or the situations and that's why he didn't let him the bully with the mic.

I find it fascinating that as much as I've watched it, I still find things to be curious about.

Pulled the trigger this week - Hubby and I are going to South Korea for two weeks in September. For long-time sufferers of Live Your Own Life a day trip to Daegwallyeong Pass is on the itinerary. Will take the train across the Han River, but won't try to time it for the sunset as in Queen of Tears😁. Lots of other places - some have appeared frequently in kdramas, but that's not why we are going - they just happen to be popular sites.

It is unfortunate that news writers in the entertainment industry often overlook the impact their articles may have on the feelings of the partners involved when writing about former married K-drama stars who meet again. Would it not be more appropriate for journalists to exercise empathy and consider the emotions and privacy of all individuals involved to help in creating a more compassionate and understanding media culture?!! (morning reflections based on reading articles and comments over the past couple of days about former star couple Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki meeting at Baeksang Arts Awards).

So for the first time *ever*, a drama induced me to go check out the featured PPL brand- in this case, the Golden Goose sneakers that featured in ep 2 of Atypical Family. And wow, are they beautiful, but gah expensive! This ole povvo ahjumma has been pondering for *months* now whether to even splash out on a pair of Onitsukas to celebrate a landmark b'day, but some of those these GGs had me almost press Buy on a sneaker-shaped hole in my retirement fund :P Luckily, sanity prevailed, and the lesser evil Onitsukas may actually get purchased soon after mouldering in my shopping cart.
Which leads me to ponder on KDrama fashion nowadays- I'm so often on the fence about it... I rarely see anyone dressed really normal-chic (acc to my taste- which runs either a bit classic preppy, or loves simple well-fitted drapes and styles, with nice shoes obvs) Either they're dressed in wildly inappropriate glamazon clothes - think the FL in Marry My Husband, or frumpy cardigans over loose skirts or baggy jeans and clunky sneakers/ Mary Janes- a la Behind Your Touch. And the men are either gussied up in 3 piece suits, or in 2x oversized clothes- loose trousers/suits and oversized shirts, which makes them look to me like bobblehead dolls, that they also may go to sleep in.

I'd love reccos for shows with good, chic fashion please and thanks :) Just for some eye candy haha.

I even love the over the top/“glamazon” 😆 outfits I’d never ever wear, because it’s just fun to see (DALI & GAMJATANG or HER PRIVATE LIFE comes to mind, especially that museum’s owner’s OTT chic is *chef’s kiss* And of course the mums in PERFECT MARRIAGE REVENGE - yes please!).

Then there’s always my personal rabbit hole of business or business casual fashion. 😅 I’m watching ON THE VERGE OF INSANITY at the moment, and love almost every smart outfit of the FL. Her cream colored suits seem highly impractical, yes, but I bet she has a stain removal pen (potential PPL!) with her at all times. (Also, that show is just so good. Highly recommend it.)
Other shows fitting this bill: WHAT’S WRONG WITH SECRETARY KIM, FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT (c drama), and many more I cannot think of right now… 🤔 (I guess, HYENA defines an own sub-category in here, but I love it! 😆)

Then there’s the “more comfy, but sometimes mixed with smarter items” style: FLs in DR SLUMP, KTL, SH**TING STARS, maybe SOMETHING IN THE RAIN. The last two will make you wonder how they have so many wool coats & where the heck they store them.

But yes. Some shows’ style choices will leave you baffled. But it’s memorable, too! (I’m still haunted by the “pantsuits - but with shorts” on the actresses in DESTINED WITH YOU.)

Ps: there are a few posts about kdrama fashion on this site, that are a fun read, if you need more inspiration. 🤓

What's with Jae Wook picture in this thread? 😅😅😅
Haven't got any chance to watch his recent drama The Impossible Heir (still wondering actually whether to watch it or not 🙈)...
Anyhow, got so little time to start watching kdrama back. Have to forget any ongoing drama. Stumbled upon Lovely Runner (marathon 10 eps in one sit) and I thought it is a 12 eps series 🙃. Now, have to pause and wait until end of month for finale (must keep off this page then to avoid spoilers 🤭)!

You will definitely need to stay off the site then as all roads lead back to the love for Lovely Runner regardless of the main site post or fan wall!

Now that Queen of Tears has finished, the men in my family asked me if I would kindly find a drama that would not turn me into a sobbing heap on the sofa at the time “Match of the Day” drops. It was their bad luck that Netflix dropped the latest episode at that time on a Saturday night They say it is hard to concentrate on cheering in a goal when I’m reaching for the box of tissues.

I looked around and couldn’t see any Kdrama that appealed, and so I turned to Cdrama and unearthed an absolute gem of a drama with the most unlikely love story you could possible, love between a Mortician and a successful career girl who lost half a leg in a tragic road accident. First of all, for an English speaker, the quality of subtitling and the command of English is better than I have ever seen in a drama. The male lead is extremely handsome, but had never struck me as a particularly good actor. Until now! The FL was unknown, but is absolutely brilliant , there is a mother, siblings and a couple of grandmothers. The setting is a town called Namping and is set around an estuary, beautiful scenery and first-class cinematography. The preparation of the departed is fascinating and profoundly moving, and the amount of dialogue concerning the handling of grief and general philosophy on the subject really does make you reflect. The subject is serious and deep, but there is a lot of humour and comedy. I have practically binged the first 19 of 21 episodes and haven’t hit the forward button once. An extraordinary, thought provoking film with a very powerful chemistry between the lovers. I’d love somebody else take a chance on watching this. Spoiler…….you may need a tissue or two……….

Why is the back half of W:TwoWorlds so forgettable to me? I just saw a video and I was like "they got married?!"

I think I've seen the drama twice and I never remember what happens after he jumps (I feel like he jumped twice haha)
I remember he jumped into Han River and then I vaguely remember a scene on a roof which I think he again jumped off of for some reason (I think it was to somehow reset things).
