Kim Hee-sun and Lee Hye-young fall into a Bittersweet Hell

An eerie first teaser has landed for MBC’s black comedy and thriller Bittersweet Hell, where Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires) and Lee Hye-young’s (Big Bet) presumed perfect life is revealed to be a little less rosy than it seems.

Setting the uneasy mood from the start, we open the teaser at a cemetery where crime novelist Hong Sa-kang (Lee Hye-young) raises a glass to the deceased. Daughter-in-law Noh Young-won (Kim Hee-sun) just stands in silence, thinking back on Yeonwoo’s (Numbers) unsettling question: “Do you know everything? About your family?”

As a family psychologist, Young-won gives a fair and trusting response, “Is it necessary to know everything about each other, in order to be family?” Unfortunately, the sequence involving Young-won’s husband Kim Nam-hee (Chicken Nugget) is not very reassuring. He also seems to be number two on the hit list, while his and Young-won’s son Jaechan (Semantic Error) is number four.

Naturally, Young-won is distressed to have herself and her family under threat. But I’m not sure what to think of mother-in-law Sa-kang dancing as if in a trance, whose scene is curiously intercut with the ~mysterious~ Lee Se-na (Yeonwoo). Sa-kang, though, is quick to assess the situation, saying to Young-won, “Don’t you see? We’ve been sunk into a trap.”

But with Sa-kang as number three and Young-won number five, they’ll need to race against the clock if they want to survive with their whole family intact. The teaser then closes as Young-won is brought to the snowy woods and upon her discovery of something there, we end on her realization that, “It was all a lie.”

Written by Nam Ji-yeon (So I Married an Anti-fan) with PD Lee Do-hyun (Doctor Lawyer, She Knows Everything) and PD Wie Deuk-kyu (Mobius: The Veil) co-directing, MBC’s Bittersweet Hell will be premiering this month on May 24.

This is something different from the usual kdrama offerings. Mysterious MiL is someone to watch out for.

At 12 episodes, I expect this will be tightly written. I may just check this out!

Thanks! Believe me, that has not escaped my attention. 😉 I'm even more excited about seeing Kim Hee-sun again, and black comedy has been hitting the spot for me lately, so I'll definitely try it.

I like Kim Hee-sun so much even though I have only seen her in “Tomorrow” which I liked a lot and cried over despite many others not liking it. I still think about some of the stories including the one about the Korean “comfort women” who were repeatedly raped by the Imperial Japanese armed forces who committed war crimes. That statue was such a beautiful addition and Rowoon showed his growth as an actor.

I really like Kim Hee Sun, and I'm intrigued by the idea of a black comedy in the mix for May, so this is one I'll definitely be checking out.

Come Friday, May 24 an interesting ratings battle will commence between two of the big three terrestrial networks with both MBC’s BITTER SWEET HELL airing episode one at 21:50 and SBS’s CONNECTION airing episode one at 22:00. They will be going against each other head to head.
As of now both are not available on a legal stream in the US. BSH will be available on Viu.

The mother-in-law seems to be all sorts of interesting, as they say. Will certainly give this show a try.

I'm here for Kim Hee-sun but the MIL is little too unsettling (nothing new, but still) for comfort. Will give it a try nevertheless.
