Looks like BMR might end up with "real" weekender numbers (20%+) soon...and the Beanie Weekender crew won't be surprised. The show is a delight. Charm a-plenty and a truly varied cast of characters who have both individual and interconnected storylines!

BMR really is that good. This writer may have saved weekenders with her new template for such shows and this show really is a delight.

Beauty and Mr. Romantic
The amnesia/plastic surgery story line seems to suggest the drama is headed into makjang terrirory, which is not suprising considering the writer, the ratings will jump as the show gets closer and closer to crazy town.

Chief Detective.
Such a great show with very little buzz, a must watch for fans of crime dramas (an endangered species in Korean dramaland as of late).

and yay Lovely runner, i am hoping for 6% by the finale

The original plot premise for BMR essentially promised Makjang so you are no doubt right- what has surprised me has been how much gentler this show has been much of the time. I would note that the amnesia had a different dramatic purpose than usual and that even the plastic surgery was truly reconstructive and not done for the purpose of concealment.

My bet on the makjang is different than this. I think that some of the storylines will tend that way, but not the whole drama. I feel that the Jin-dan/Mom-zilla relationship that I was very happy to see telegraphed as on the rise at the end of episode 18 will contain the OTT craziness--and I hope in the most wonderful way!!! I don't think the lead couple will head in that direction--certainly as @oldawyer notes the amnesia plot not only makes sense here, it's also already ending after just 3 short episodes.

Plus, as @dncingemma noted over on the hangout...what plastic surgery? Ji-young was clearly just Do-ra still with big glasses and a perm...who needed a DNA test for that revelation? 🤣

I 100% agree with you both the story is still pretty much grounded even with the amnesia/plastic surgery trope showing up.

But we still have another 32 hours of story to go, and anything can happen

LOL 32 more hours...weekenders are so ridiculous in their own way, aren't they! 🤷‍♀️😂

The plastic surgery was 'reconstructive'- it is we the viewers who know that the surgeon did such a bang-up job that he re-created the actual original face while at the same time serving as the reason why Grandma and neighbors did not expect to be gazing on the face of 'Ji-young': Because the surgeon had warned them that it would not be 'Ji-young's' face it simply explained the difference.

I also agree that a DNA test was really unnecessary once he found the star tattoo. But I guess you cannot be too careful?

I would be very happy to see the makjang limited to Jin-dan and sociopathic mom but there has to be some fallout from the reveal of Pil-seung's birth secret- this is something that was baked into the story from the very first episode.

I would have loved to watch MBC’s CHIEF DETECTIVE 1958. It had everything: Lee Je-hoon, avperiod setting but had one HUGE drawback (and I believe its the reason it didn’t get a lot of play here): MBC licensed with the death star Disney+ rather than Kocowa/Viki.

Lol, sorry for the tone up there but I am still slightly annoyed that being a cops/crime/mystery guy I missed CD1958.

O/T on a happier note. In a recent MDL article Lee Je-hoon is quoted saying this about the news that writer-nim Kim Eun-hee was working on the script for SIGNAL SEASON 2:
“ “I haven't heard about the casting of other actors [from Season 1], but if they do it, I will join as well," and joked, "She wouldn't write the script excluding me, right? I'm waiting for it," he said jokingly.”

There are so many shows that I can't watch because they are on Disney+/Hulu! I just can't pay for another streaming service. The other streaming services that I already pay for are used by multiple people in my family, so I can't just cancel and re-sign up whenever I want to.

Omo!!! Midnight romance in hagwon reached 4.8%. I loved episode 4, and happy to see this rating.

Frankly Speaking can do better. But the reality show part is a bit of a downer. Hopefully next week things pick up.

Crash has potential to improve if they get the buddy cop thing right.

One network that still knows how to produce excellent
crime dramas is SBS and I am hopeful that SBS’s upcoming CONNECTION (with Ji Sung) (with episode one airing this Friday, May 24) will soon appear on Viki’s “Coming Soon” list.
CONNECTION is now on Kocowa’s “Coming Soon” list.

OCN used to be its rival, but CJ Ent probably pulled it to promote TVING for adult content that couldn't be shown on TVN and JTBC.

I think back in the day @kakashi (The Problematic of the Unproblematic blog) gave OCN the moniker ORIGINAL CRUEL NETWORK. I was a big fan of OCN dramas.

I wouldn't have gotten into "Nirvana In Fire" without Kakashi's recaps.

Surprised that Atypical family is doing well despite the initial negative reviews. Glad for that little kid playing Yi Na. I'm not watching the drama, so I can't commend on the acting of other actors.

I am really enjoying THE ATYPICAL FAMILY and I think across the board the cast is giving us fine performances, then there is the technical composition of the episodes-just great.
If you had watched Sat/Sun episodes you would have seen that there is more going on with In-a behind those glasses than she lets on. Park So-yi (In-a) had some quality screen time these last two episodes.

A good thing is that the "title" itself gives you a clue of what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by the darker vibe but its going well with the drama. Do give it a go if you have time. It is an *interesting* watch, I give you that. 😊💪🏻

I am Frankly Surprised at the relatively low ratings for FRANKLY SPEAKING.

The new template being used by the writer of BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC- we are now onto a third chapter of the story- allows viewers an easier way to join at midpoint. Thus, ratings are starting to rise although the damage done by the two previous weekenders has not helped. The story itself is better than the previous weekender written by this writer: YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN. It helps that we have a number of genuinely likeable characters in this show beyond the two leads- plus some generally less likable but redeemable ones and then two clearly defined villains. For once an amnesia story was used positively and not over a lot of episodes.

Especially with no competition one would have expected Frankly Speaking to do decently well at least if not very well. Hope it manages to stay afloat.

I'd like to give a shout out to Missing Crown Prince, which is holding its own amidst a solid bunch of weekend offerings. It's really a shame that the marketing (at least internationally) was so convoluted and shoddy, and that it got off to such a bad start, especially with the last minute delayed release. Although they may have put a little too much emphasis on the "artsiness" of this production, it's still an engaging story with some really good acting (especially Myung Se Bin as the Dowager Queen). I've been enjoying it each week, and I'm glad to see that its home audience is enjoying it too!
