[Drama Chat] Your current top 10 dramas (2024 version)

Back by popular request, it’s that time where we revisit our personal top ten drama list and share our favorites with the dramaverse. We started a thing when we did this in 2022 and then again in 2023.

And that’s the funny thing about favorites — they shift and evolve with us as we go through life, respond to different kinds of stories, and (of course) have to account for a year of new favorite dramas to add to the list. I know my top ten list is changing as I write (*cough* Lovely Runner*cough*). But the more it changes, the more it stays the same. I will always love stories with magical realism bits, with slice-of-life heart and characters (Like Flowers in Sand), and with a strong hero’s journey trajectory (Marry My Husband).

It’s time to reassess, readdress, and dive into your current top ten dramas. Share your (new) current list below!

Excited to see everyone’s favorite dramas this year! I'm definitely part of this "popular request." :)

For any interested in following along, I’ll be tallying our collective Top 10s in this spreadsheet, where I’ve also tracked our Top 10 lists from 2023, 2022, and 2017. For the next month, I’ll add any lists that are posted here to that spreadsheet so we can see which dramas are our all-time favorites this year (and beyond!). :)

Full link for accessibility: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16VVIxMJx9h8RcT3A1w3g_0o7vLQ98j7k0P_RHz9jTKo/edit?usp=sharing

For now, I’ll be focusing on just tallying the dramas and getting them added to the 2024 tab (the main tab when you click the link). In the next few weeks, though, I’ll combine this year’s list with the past years to see which dramas emerge as the most popular dramas across the years. I’ll comment back here and on the Open Thread in one month, when the data is finalized and ready for perusal. :)

(In order to help this spreadsheet be representative of our favorite k dramas, I do have some inclusion criteria for eligible dramas/lists -- e.g., I won’t tally movies, non-Korean dramas, or lists that include far more than 10 dramas or are posted over a month from today. Those criteria are to make this data more statistically sound, but obviously this drama chat is just for fun, so don’t feel like you need to stick to that if you’d prefer to make this list your own way. If you have any questions about the inclusion criteria or my rationale for it, you can see the “Inclusion Criteria” note on the “All Years” tab of the spreadsheet. :))

Funnily enough, I'm actually an English teacher, but I like to think that in another life I would have been an accountant. For now, I'm just a woman who enjoys spreadsheets. :)

I'm always happy to find another Beanie who appreciates data like this! I've been consolidating some of our other Beanie-made resources into a shared Google folder, and the Beanie Polls spreadsheets have similar data. Something to look into if you want more access to Dramabeans data!

Not sure if anyone will see this now, but I've had a few questions about how I handle multi-season dramas, so I wanted to explain how I handle this:

Most multi-season shows are listed as separate shows on the spreadsheet: This is due to the fact that a) people sometimes only list one season, and I need a way to represent that preference, and b) dramas often release in different years, so it's important to note that the 2022 poll couldn't be referring to Taxi Driver season 2 (for example). The only time I don't tally a show's seasons separately is if the Drama Chat responses always list the show as one season (e.g., so far, "My Dearest" has never been separated by season, so it's only one show on the list).

If no season is given, I tally all seasons: If you list a show without specifying it's seasons (e.g., "Forest of Secrets"), I'll put a tally in both seasons of the show. I'll generally just assume that is what was meant, but even if it wasn't, I'd prefer to side on overrepresentation rather than underrepresentation.

You are welcome to count multiple seasons as one show: While I list them separately, I don't consider listing multiple seasons as one show meaning you're breaking the "10 dramas" rule. I've factored in a buffer in number of shows that allows for these shows to be counted as one (particularly because most of us think of these shows as one show, not multiple separate entities).

If just one season of the show is in your top 10, specify the season. With that, if you would prefer only one season to be totaled (e.g., I love Alchemy of Souls season 1 but didn't like season 2), just make sure to list which season you're referring to.

Hope that clarifies a bit more! Let me know if you guys have any questions about this. :)

I think this issue is so interesting! (You and I chatted about it below, but) I definitely count Alchemy of Souls and My Dearest as one single show, but seasons (generally separated by years in airing schedule) I count separately. This could be because I haven't yet watched Hospital Playlist or Forest of Secrets though, and I definitely don't fault people for counting them together! I've been counting Lord of the Rings as a single movie since I was in high school, so no shade from me, but I always find it interesting how people divide up stories like this. Beanies, do you normally do this on a case-by-case basis, or are there rules you use to distinguish what is a "single" show? I think if the second season of The Uncanny Counter had been better, I would be more likely to count it as a single show than I am 😅

Thanks for adding this and it does make some good points as the dramas I listed as one series did air in different years so I will go back and confirm I meant both seasons.

Required fields are marked *

Definitely -- and more than I think we saw in either the 2023 or 2022 lists. I wonder if that's because we have more new Beanies that have primarily watched newer dramas? Or if it's because there have been more convincing new dramas lately? I'm not sure, but it's an interesting pattern.

Required fields are marked *

Certainly the production value is much higher these days, but of course that's no guarantee of quality in writing/acting. My guess is that there's a fairly large number of Beanies who have largely seen newer shows and they are probably more likely to participate in these polls, too. Also, it seems to me that this generation of viewers only have the patience for about 16 episodes, so they're not likely to try the older shows with 50+ episodes. I don't have a problem with the recency bias--people are going to like what they like and what they've seen--except for the fact that great old shows will continue to be neglected/forgotten as the newer ones are more liked or voted up in polls like this. Maybe we need a separate reference list of oldies but goodies.

Oh that would be great to have a separate list of top "older" shows. I only started watching kdramas a little over 5 years ago but was watching mostly older shows and not the currently airing ones.

2

I have been watching a year and you’re correct about not wanting to dive into older large count shows. The longest I watched was Hotel King and it was way too long. I have so many shows to catch up on I can’t take the time on long shows. My favorite dramas are mostly 2017-2021

I too love a good spreadsheet ;) As a consultant for mapping and data, a manager once gave me a messy dataset and asked me to "pam-ify it." I didn't know that my name could be a verb!

Okay, this list isn’t necessarily my top 10 highest rated dramas on MyDramaList. Instead, I chose the dramas that I would be most excited to see rank high on other peoples’ lists -- the dramas that convinced me to root for them. :)

1. Healer: Forever and always. Cannot beat it.
2. Coffee Prince: My first Korean love. Will always hold a special place in my heart

And then in no particular order:
3. Hospital Playlist: Loved the lived-in cast of characters and their dynamics
4. Pinocchio: Great messaging, most well-utilized characters, great arcs
5. Twenty-five, Twenty-one: Caught me at just the right time to maximize impact.
6. It’s Okay to Not be Okay: I’m a sucker for an idiosyncratic female lead.
7. Fight for My Way: I’ve loved seeing this drama get more attention since Queen of Tears. So underrated!
8. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: Perfectly captures the feeling of youth and young love.
9. Strong Girl Do Bong Soon: It’s just too adorable to not include.
10. Flower of Evil: This one actually ranks a bit under my other dramas in my normal ranking (mostly due to the cop-out ending), but it’s one I’ve been thinking about and coming back to more lately, and that staying power feels worthy of a #10 spot.

There were several other dramas that I want to root for but either a) they haven’t convinced me of their staying power yet, or b) I feel like it’s been too long since I last watched them to know if I would still love them as much now. So honorable mentions: Gaksital, Ojakgyo Brothers, Call it Love

If I remember correctly, half of my current list is different from last year, from 6 to 10 (I hadn't watched 7, 8 & 10 by then). SYIM19L would be on this list regardless, while I think it is 50:50 for OBY, and the CW with you guys gave me the final push. It's not that I don't love it as much, but if you look at my honorable mentions, you'll see I have some other shows I equally love as well, so it was a hard decision to refine a top 10. I would have cheated and list some shows in a tie 😁, but as TheOutsideJoke will be tallying this, I went for a definite list 💪🏻

"JEJONGWON"
It is such an underrated but well-done sageuk. It deserved to be remembered. Who would have known that butchers at the very lowest of Joseon's social class would be the celebrity chefs of today? Hanwoo beef - Korea's pride and joy!
Doctors were not a well-respected profession, but look at them today.

It is one of favourite saeguks of all time as the drama was based on a true story of a butcher who rose to become a doctor. I am glad you love Jejongwon too, as very few people know and are able to understand this historical part in Korea, as it doesn't focus on kings or nobles, rather the most humble and lowest of part of the Joseon society.

I discovered the world of K-drama thanks to CLOY, the only one on Netflix dubbed in Italian
Then it was the turn of Bulgasal and You are my spring
I subscribed to Viki and since then a world has opened up to me.
I generally choose a drama if the plot intrigues me, the genre usually doesn't matter, although exclusively romantic stories don't suit me.
Over time I started to know/recognize the actors, then look for their current-previous works
I often rely on your reviews, on the advice of other Beanies
And the lists on this post are really precious
I've already made a note of what to see in the next few weeks

4. Forest of Secrets 1 and 2
5. Recipe of Farewell
6. The Nokdu Flower
7. D.P. 1 and 2

2. Goblin
3. Healer

Ok, this is my list for this year (really just at this moment hahaha!). I struggled with it a bit, I’ll be honest. I guess it gets harder the more dramas you watch? I put them in the order that I finished them because I’m not confident about the rank.

1. Crash Landing on You - my gateway drama, the best ensemble cast, a love story to come back to over and over again.
2. My Ajusshi - two people slowly waking up and becoming human again, incredible performances, the voice I would eavesdrop on any day.
3. Live Up to Your Name - the thousand faces of Kim Nam-gil, off-the-charts chemistry, the most heartbreaking timeslip.
4. Alchemy of Souls - absolutely epic romance, high fantasy stakes, the most complex love polygon ever.
5. Through the Darkness - creepy in the best way, stellar acting, the best tone of any show about profilers I’ve ever seen.
6. Our Blooming Youth - my favorite crown prince, rewriting history for justice, hard conversations about trust and forgiveness.
7. The Uncanny Counter - the best coming-of-age story, cool action scenes, beautiful found family.
8. The Matchmakers - the best crafted drama, incredible side romances, gorgeous to look at
9. Like Flowers in Sand - adorable adorable ML, amazing friend group, my intro to a sport I didn’t expect to care about.
10. Doctor Slump - the healing romance I didn’t know I needed, PHS being PHS, no easy answers about complex relationships.

I count AoS as one drama because it was just split into two parts, both of which were intended from the beginning, and they weren't separated by much time (airing-wise). TUC and its sequel I think of as two separate dramas because it was a whole other season and was separated by a few years (and this entry is definitely referring only to the first season).

Tell Me That You Love Me and Perfect Marriage Revenge made their way into my Top 10 and I'm sure Tell Me That You Love Me won't be knocked out for a very long time.

So...
Tell Me That You Love Me.

So happy to see Go back couple in your list, I rewatched it last year when I was in serious pain and needed something to bring some joy. There was no evil or annoying second lead drama, no unnecessary tension outside of the couple trying to work things out. It was hysterically funny and so sweet.

A year ago this was my first-ever Dramabeans post! 🥰 My top-ten list has changed quite a bit since last year, with the biggest contributions from 2023 dramas. 2023 was an awesome drama year for me - it now represents 40% of my top-ten, just beating out 2021 dramas (30%). So far for 2024, Lovely Runner is in the running for top-ten. Everything else remains to be seen!

1. The Matchmakers love is everywhere and is the beginning of everything
2. Into the Ring (2x) do all things with integrity not caring what others think
3. Call it Love the best revenge is healing, forgiveness, and love
4. Unlock My Boss (3x) treat everyone with kindness and believe the best in others
5. Like Flowers in Sand follow your strengths and live with integrity
6. Hello, Me! (2x) making peace with your past dreams for the future and loving yourself
7. Rainless Love in a Godless Land the power of dreams, hope, and faith
8. Thirty But Seventeen growing at your own pace during life's intermissions
9. Bossam: Steal the Fate epic love story across barriers
10. The Best Hit growing up and chasing dreams

My k-drama list hasn't changed tons since last year, but I've been watching a lot more dramas from other Asian countries, so I'm going to cheat and do two lists, one for Korean shows and one for other Asian dramas:

Korean Top 10
1. Six Flying Dragons
2. The Devil
3. Queen Seondeok
4. Jumong
5. Stranger (both seasons)
6. Beyond Evil
7. Twinkling Watermelon
8. Giant
9. Liar Game
10. Healer

Other Asian shows
1. The Untamed
2. A Journey to Love
3. Someday or One Day
4. Love Between Fairy and Devil
5. Oh No, Here Comes Trouble!
6. Kieta Hatsukoi
7. The Imperial Coroner
8. A Dream of Splendor
9. Rainless Love in a Godless Land
10. Joy of Life (this could move up or down the list depending on what happens in parts 2 & 3)

You and I are going back to that era for our favorites. "Giant" brought back many great memories from those days.
Mondays and Tuesdays where the epic period dramas and sageuks compete.
Giant (MBC)- 44.9%
Jumong (MBC)- 51.9%
Queen Seon Deok (MBC) - 44.9%
I'm glad to see MBC returning to its roots, but so much has changed, and we'll not have those thrilling experiences again.
The weekends is the new Mon/Tues. Cable channels are doing much better in ratings, and the days of back-to-back epic sageuks are gone.

_ Live up to your name (2017).
_ Queen Seon Deok (2009).
_ Misaeng (2014).
_ Twenty-five Twenty-one (2022).
_ The Nokdu Flower (2019).
_ Bossam (2021).
_ Twinkling Watermelon (2023).
_ When the weather is fine (2020).

It's been difficult because I could have included The Matchmakers and My Dearest too. 2023 was a good year.

_ When I fly towards you (China).
_ A Journey to love (China).

My top 10 has changed 😲 My lists have only ever included dramas that were guaranteed to have the feel good factor running through them. However, this year I have included one drama that was a first time watch and lives up to its reputation as a classic drama for its portrayal of office politics. I felt I would include it on this year due to its lasting impression.

The list is not in any order:

Hospital playlist 2020
Prison playbook 2017
Reply 1988 2015
Twenty five, twenty one 2022
Be Melodramatic 2019
Yumi’s cells 2021

I agree there are some dramas I won’t rewatch but they are still dramas that standout and showcase elements of Korean culture or the uniqueness of K-drama so need to be seen by all K-drama fans. Healer and Miseang are examples of that. I don’t have Healer on my list because it was not my kind of drama at all but I am so glad I watched it because of the storytelling craftsmanship and meeting Wookie at his best.

I lost count of how many times I watched it. I frequented mysoju because of it. I liked everything about that show including the antagonists and the fact that it didn’t feel dragged out at any moment. I loved Jang Donggun’s character. He was actually my first Kdrama bias. That must be one of the chaebols with the greenest flag out there. I had gotten to taste Kdramas before this one, but it was All About Eve that got me hooked. If it was available on a legal platform now, I would still keep rewatching it.

@dorotka he was 23 and JRW was 25 when they made Sam Soon! If we could have told him then that he’d grow up and marry Son Ye Jin, I wonder what he would have said 😆

3

@bbstl
Well, for me it is more like: when I watched KSS for the first time, I was about 17 years younger than I am now... the gap between me and 23 year old Hyun Bin is growing! 😭

2

@bbstl @dorotka I laughed so much at this exchange! 😂

It reminded of when I was 15 and read a romance novel which had a very cute couple 16 and 18 years old. I remember I complained to my mom that the writer keeps writing about the old side characters instead of the main couple.

I read the novel again 15 years later, and realized that the "old side characters" were 30 and 35 years old and were the main laeds!!🤣🤣🤣 I mean how could I not get that before???

2

@midnight
I had to laugh as well reading your story. 😄
(Btw, I think it is you who introduced me to Georgette Heyer and I enjoyed her books very much, even if I'm a bit old(ish). 🙂)

I try to think I'm still young and the kdramas are especially successful in keeping this illusion with their Oppas and romance... and then some pesky facts (and a bit of math) do a reality check... and I'm in shock! 😄

2

Kdramas really change our perspective to age 😁 @dorotka

How about dividing into genres or eras and then filtering from there as it may be the top ten rom coms before 2017 and those 2017-2024 has two that stand out in each list and when you look at the list of your overall top 20-30 dramas that covers all the ones that stood out from your different top 10 lists across the genres/eras. It should be easier to narrow it down from there and depending on mood and new ones that swap in you may feel more confident that you have got the best 25 out of 300+ to choose a top ten from.

This is a massive achievement, well done. By next year you may well feel ready to move some dramas out so 11 & 12 can go on the list. Some recently watched dramas have a way of staying in the top 20 but are easier to move out with greater distance between the watch and list compilation. I had Salon de Nabi on my list before as I really enjoyed it but I could not justify keeping it in this year although it is still in my top 20.

@hopefulromantic so glad its not just me with multiple lists.

The past timeline in Chicago Typewriter is my favorite part of the show. And sometimes I think of it as a drama on its own. So many heart-touching moments and an epic love story between two sweet souls that happened to be caught up in the wrong time.
The scene of their deathes and the time past ML brushes his hand over hers as the only loving gesture he could express and his decision to live as a man who protects his woman and friend for a day.
Looking back on those precious scenes entices me to rewatch it.

2

I agree it was awful to witness the long term fallout from the consequences of the choices made within the friendship group which covered the spectrum of commitment to the cause.
