Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (April 27, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

Lovely Runner: This is my happy pill of the week. I’m trying to hold off watching the new episodes for as long as possible, saving them up as motivation and reward to push through the stresses of corporate worklife — I need that light at the end of the tunnel. So far I’ve made it to Tuesday. I can see intensifying angst in our future, but the deepening relationship between Sol and Sun-jae is so sweet and earnest that it buoys my spirit even when I fear what’s around that corner. (Well, the earnestness is mostly on his side, but that is like 90% of his appeal and I’m not complaining. Such a pure and lumbering sweetheart is he, and his failed attempts to play it cool give me inordinate amounts of joy.) I can appreciate that the time-travel mechanism makes it extremely difficult to change one’s fate, but I won’t give up hoping Sol’s faith moves metaphorical mountains and gives us a happy outcome. I won’t even contemplate the alternative.

Queen of Tears: I’ve hit the Episode 13 slump, which is really more like the Episode 10 slump stretching past its borders by dint of its prior momentum. But there comes a point where momentum runs out, and I’m wondering if I have enough interest left to tackle just three more. It’s like that feeling when you jump on a bicycle and pedal away enthusiastically, breezing through flat terrain until you notice the strain of a gradual incline that grows increasingly effortful until you’re huffing and puffing with exertion and your legs start to burn and eventually you wonder, maybe it’s time to let the hill take me. The terminal illness storyline is a drag, of course, and I am not a fan of characters lying to loved ones “for their own good” (that plot twist is so 2006). But what really rankles is the whole arc around these chaebols trying to beat their enemies in locating their misplaced stash of hidden funds — their embezzled, laundered and illegally funneled funds. Is it not enough to enjoy your obscene amounts of legally obtained profits that you have to steal away yet more obscene amounts of money while the rest of us dutifully pay our taxes on our meager, arduously earned proletariat incomes, and I’m supposed to root for you to sneak away with even more filthy lucre on top of that? Honestly, eat the rich.

Currently covering: The Midnight Studio

Lovely Runner: This show just continues to be exactly what I didn’t know I was craving. I’ll admit I could do without the brother/best friend scenes, but I love the rest so much that I don’t find those parts as annoying as I probably would otherwise. I adore how Sol is simultaneously so protective of and exasperated with her younger self, and I can’t blame either of the boys for swooning over her — though I appreciate the distinction that Sun-jae likes *both* versions of her, while Tae-sung didn’t seem to find her interesting (let alone anything else) until the version of her from the future rejected him. Speaking of Sun-jae, watching him come to terms with losing one dream (swimming) and finding another (singing) is beautiful and heartbreaking even without knowing how tragically it ended the first time around. I know Sol is just desperate for any way to save his life, but I really hope she can find a way to do it that doesn’t prevent him from joining Eclipse. He was SO happy on that stage, and it kills me that he apparently lost that joy somewhere along the way.

DaebakGrits

Queen of Tears: I got sucked into this drama, and now that I’m here, I can’t let go — even though the villains are insufferable and the incurable-but-curable brain tumor with a side effect of amnesia has edged into the ridiculous. At this point, I just want a happy ending, and I’m willing to accept whatever BS the writer pulls to get me there.

Lovely Runner: This story is bringing me life, and Byeon Woo-seok is giving me so many squees. The last time I looked forward to Mondays this much was when Business Proposal was airing. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a male lead who’s secretly been in love with the female lead for a long time (in a non-stalkerish way) and finally gets his unrequited crush requited.

The Midnight Studio: @Mistyisles did such a great job recapping and the part about collateral damage was so spot on. It is actually a nice change of pace that it wasn’t some massive mastermind, but just someone with a callous disregard for human life and an accident. It is good that one of the big bads, is bad just because he sucks, and not because of a dark spirit, especially in a drama about spirits.

Lovely Runner: So, we have come to the serial killer, sigh. So, it seems that one of the past rules is that big things will happen regardless, which I appreciate, but the outcomes might be different. I am really hoping Im Sol starts to get to know Sun Jae when she sees past him again and doesn’t try to railroad him. It is good that she recognizes that he liked her well before she started hounding him in trying to save his life. She also really needs to stop listening to her 17-year-old friend about boys, lol. I get she doesn’t know much, but neither does your friend girl.

Blood Free: We are in the thick of it now. We have a nefarious PM with either a crush or obsession. We have a CEO and body guard have enough sexual tension to make a diamond from rock, we have another rival CEO with crazy issues. He needs a strait jacket and not therapy. \ So much here. Also, we have a terrible African actor, who is supposed to be an NBA player, WHY? He wasn’t nearly tall enough for that, let’s do better writer, let’s do better. Lol

Chief Detective 1958: I love the case of the week and the cute romance. Mindless fun this one.

Queen of Tears: I am ready for anger, tears, and hopefully happiness at the end. I am also ready for 4 hours instead of 3, lol.

Goodbye Earth: I contemplated this, but I am just not in the mood for an end of the world drama, so I will pass on this one.

Maybe it has something to do with the recent novel, The Sense of Wonder, by Matthew Salesses. The central character is a Korean American basketball player who becomes the first Asian American to play in the NBA. The book was pretty popular.

A little off topic, in relation to that strange NBA player scene (although I guess it fits with what we're watching). Right before viewing that episode, I was watching an NBA game with Lebron James, who at age 39 remains one of the best players in the league, and who is actually an argument against the need for "renewal" via cultured tissue (as are many of the older players in the NBA!).

They could have had the same discussion with any athlete in any sport, so the choice of the NBA was again, weird. By the way, there has only been one Korean player in the NBA, Ha Seung-jin, who is a huge guy at 7'3" but was too awkward to make much of an impact on the league. Right now there's a U.S. collegiate player from Korea, jun Seok Yeo, who had a couple of good games this season, but he definitely has to develop a bit more if he hopes to play professionally outside of Korea. What I've read about the Korean Professional Basketball League is that it really isn't that popular on the Korean sports scene, making the choice of the NBA all the stranger for this show!

I didn't realize there had only been one Korean player, but I guess because it isn't popular Koreans don't fight to develop basketball players like say soccer or baseball.

To your point on Lebron, but he and Tom Brady are the exception in their sports, but still true.

Blood Free : That basement surgery made me super uncomfortable. Not liking this super strength and insane hearing plot they added. Prime minister continues to be intriguing. Is he the true villain?

Lovely Runner : it’s fun while watching but I don’t think too much once I finish. The leads are adorable together. It’s nice that Sol knows how he felt about her in the OG timeline.

Parasyte - The grey 4/6. No time this week either.

Queen of tears : Hanging in there! I do like the leads, but the emotional rollercoaster went on for too long that I am exhausted. I hope the finale episodes aren’t two hours each 😭

Nothing uncovered : oh wow. That was unexpected. Drama got better after the psycho therapist died. But this twist was unexpected. I am not sure what the FL is thinking.
Does she really think she can keep the child?
Husband telling his father about the child also seemed suspicious. Clearly they are determined to keep the child. What is she planning to do?
I hope husband isn’t the killer.

Shogun : Thus, it ends! What a magnificent drama. Not a wasted moment. Easily one of the best dramas this year.

Mask 18/20 eps.
Paused.

Best Choice Ever (cdrama) : Ep 30
Finally the leads are together. They are sweet together. But I don’t like that the focus is still FL and her family. I wish we had more OTP moments.

Will love in spring (cdrama) Ep 4
Loving it so far! It is really nice to see Li Xian and Zhou You Tong together. I love them both and it’s great to see them together and their chemistry is wonderful.
It did remind me a bit of Meet Yourself ( slightly with the theme and Li Xian playing this small town character living with his grandma)!!
I love the way the show is shot, and town is so beautiful..It makes me want to travel! The music is wonderful. I already love the OST ..

Sad to see Shogun end and I will add it to my re-watch list. Magnificent is the exact adjective. I hit play on Will Love in Spring for the same Meet Yourself reasons and I am really loving it.
The Thumb of Doom (on the FF button) indicates I will not be hanging in with Best Choice much longer. The drama is like ultra processed food with a long list of unhealthy additives. I would've emancipated from that mom years ago (or hired a serial killer).

Gosh I found this drama yesterday while browsing for something to watch and now I'm *obsessed*... I don't normally watch Cdramas, except Fake it Till You Make It, which was similarly fantastic. But this hits on another level altogether. Everything about this show is just amazing... The themes, writing, dialogue, acting, cinematography, OST- just elevated... I'm scared of how it may end, but whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be perfect.

ONGOING
Queen of Tears - Will watch last four episodes together tomorrow because I'm getting irrationally worried about how this will end and, let me tell you, it was quite a task avoiding the show EVERYONE ON THE INTERNET wants to talk about 😅.

The Midnight Studio - They did wrap the whole story around the multiple crimes well but it beggars belief that this homicidal maniac was just never discovered over a 20-year period where he worked as a cop. I'm assuming Ki-joo will be saved by his dead uncle in some form but props to the show for at least nominally killing off the ML.

Lovely Runner - SO MUCH CUTE this week though it ended on a sad and scary note. I understand Sol saying no to Sun-jae because there's really not a lot she can do with the situation she's in. At least next week's preview made me gasp! Side note - the mini Reply 97 callback and the drama titles made me LOL. Tae-seong's friend is funny.

Blood Free/ Dominant Species - Loved how Jang Yeong-sil saved the day in the beginning but was taken aback by the super-soldier turn the story took. Doesn't look like Bodyguard Kim will get the same treatment unfortunately 😔.

STARTED
Chief Inspector 1958 - Fun if not particularly original. I like that they included real people in the story.

C-DRAMAS
Completed Best Choice Ever - I thought this'd be a rom-com-y slice of life but it was actually more family melodrama. I think this just wasn't for me.

There's a Lover in My Hometown/ Will Love in Spring - I'm up to Ep. 5 and loving this just as I expected I would. It's sweet and funny but with a melancholic strain running through it. Looking forward to catching up with the rest of the episodes over the weekend.

Among next week's shows, Young Babylon looks fun. Will try it out.

But the show set it up as trauma repeat for ML so May be this is the end for him.

Yes I also think we're basically getting a PTSD repeat for ML now that we've had one for FL. Still won't hurt to keep fingers crossed for Kim 🤞.

I saw a trailer for Young Babylon on Twitter, which was pretty funny and the 90s vibes were great. We'll see how it goes.

Will Love in Spring definitely is worth checking out at least! I'm not surprised most beanies love it.

I think Chief Inspector also suffers a bit from the translation gap. A lot of the colour of the language being used, including some puns and jokes, are lost in the subtitles.

Yes, I agree with @miso2019 , Will Love in Spring is worth checking if you are in mood for slice of life... with some sizzling chemistry between the leads. 😁 (I just don't know why I thought I was the only one watching. 😆)

I think Chief Detective is primarily aimed for domestic viewers and refers a lot to the original (and looooong 🙂) series, what may also be its limitation. It can still be a fun watch. 🙂

Watching

The Midnight Photo Studio I am not loving the fact that we keep ending on odd numbered episodes because it makes the week’s episodes feel even more unfinished 😭 - praying on my knees for a happy ever after. PLS. PLSSSSS.

New Life Begins Thanks to @bebeswtz suggestion! It’s a very lighthearted self-aware rom-com that’s punctuated by a few more serious tones here and there. Ngl, I’m kind of so-so on the FL’s characterisation but I’m enjoying the feminist themes and a lot of the supporting characters, as well as Bai Jingting 💕

Destined Speaking of, just started watching this which is another BJT drama and I think this is filling the void that Blossoms in Adversity left behind nicely. Maybe not a direct parallel, but it shares the same grounded tone and also features a level-headed FL.

Will Love In Spring so keen to watch this, just waiting for some more episodes to come out before I start!

Lovely Runner I have officially paused but I’m thankful for all the posts and edits about it because I still feel in the loop that way and also it’s lessening the ‘what is going to happen/what bombshell will they drop now’ anxiety ❤️ We’ve got a lil playlist compilation going, you can find the playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/55i0uKkatKWLvbPTvrpziz?si=4eaa7827deee4dff

It’s still open too, if you want to add any songs to it (the prompt is: any song that makes you think of Lovely Runner in someway, whether it be recent or old) feel free to post on your wall with the hashtag #lovelyrunnerPL or tag me.

Queen of Tears I’m not exactly watching this, I’ve just been skimming through mainly because of FOMO and all I’ve gathered so far is: crying. Lots and lots of crying. Ngl I’m exhausted - and that’s from only really watching like 15%

I’ve also been eyeing Young Lady and Gentleman on Netflix - any Beanies who’ve watched this Kdrama, let me know if it’s a skip or a stream in your opinion!

DROPPED

Hard to Find ok so like the story is intriguing and it’s pretty nicely made, but it’s lacking something and that’s made me fast forward a fair bit. Maybe it’s the script? It feels a bit flat at some points and a bit repetitive, so I’m struggling to properly form some kind of emotional attachment. The villain is also a bit of a caricature, which I don’t mind usually but it’s not helping when there’s other things that also feel lacklustre. Plus it’s quite grim & dark and I’m foreseeing a tragic ending EEEK…. I’ve not felt super compelled to click past ep 18 honestly so it’s a drop I think for now, might pick it up again sometime later if there’s a lull.

FINISHED

Best Choice Ever not without flaws but overall a fantastic watch, the final scenes between mum and daughter had me absolutely bawling. The lead couple were goals as well, so supportive loving and understanding, but the overarching theme of family and navigating...

cultural/generational gaps between family was what made this drama standout for me. Definitely one I’ll rewatch down the road.

Blossoms in Adversity a 10/10 drama, such a satisfying ending, I was smiling so much that my face hurt !! I just finished it too so I’m still basking in those feels and they’re not quite translating to words at the moment, but genuinely enjoyed this one from start to finish and it’s as close as drama will get to ‘absolutely perfect’ in my books 💕

Oh I am glad to hear Blossoms in Adversity went well. I am about half way through and been worried the ML will get turned into the emperor. Also the current emperor yelling at his son who is a hurt child gave me a nightmare, so I took a break for this week.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah no it does take a bit of a darker turn in the third act, but it ends well!! I also had the same worry as you about the ML at the time, if that helps illuminate what the ending will be...

The emperor was not a good guy by any means, but I did like the flavour of complexity they brought to the 'antagonists' with the idea that they were all doing what they thought was right/trying to ensure their own survival. Which doesn't erase the fact that they did/do horrible things ofc, but it makes them a bit more interesting than your typical 'just because' villain.

I agree about the FL's character. I liked her in the beginning anyways even if young and silly, but loved the growth. I think what was so great about New Life Begins was that it took place over the course of 3 years, and by the end, I felt a sense of pride to see how the characters have grown. It was like watching a student graduate.

Required fields are marked *

I'm glad to hear the FL does have some growth! I don't mind her silliness (all though, some of her antics have me like 👀), and I do understand her position of coming from a completely different lifestyle to being forced into a marriage, but I want her to hurry up and fall in love with the 6th prince already because he's so gosh darn adorable hahahaha slowburn though yes I know, and I look forward to seeing that unfold!

And yes @IsaGC, the fifth prince (I can see the growth ahead already!) and the OST are already becoming my favourite things (in addition to BJT and also all the other characters in the makeshift sisterhood).

I am still watching BCE with some liberal FF. I finally reached the episode where FL has an open conversation with her mom and expresses how she wishes to be freed. It also looked like mommy made an effort to listen. I hope she changes.
I really really need more OTP scenes. They are so cute!! Loved the bus kiss. It’s so nice to see how different this relationship is for her as opposed to her previous one where she was just mothering him.

Nah that's so fair, the mum is very much a flawed character in every sense of the word and I was worried they'd try to completely sanctify her using a typical tried and tested trope but they didn't go there (phew), and instead ended with a more realistic acknowledgement that there were things she needed to change and she's working on that.

The bus scene was so cute and I love how she initiated it, I straight up whooped. There is a lack of OTP scenes - well not a lack, but I was like defs wanting more but then again my appetite for these two is borderline insatiable. I was worried that after they got together, he'd becoming overbearingly overprotective in the name of love, but I was so glad that he found that sweet spot between giving her space to do her own thing/recognising her own agency and will and just silently showing up and being there when she needed it. GREEN FLAG!

@lapislazulii You asked about Young Lady and Gentleman and I can somewhat respond to your call. That dramas is a more-than-50 episode weekender, so you need to be ready for all that entails, but it stars the same, quite charming, man who's starring in the current weekender, Beauty and Mr. Romantic. So I can personally vouch for him at least. ;)

However, I believe that, from listening to @oldawyer speak of the past, Young Lady and Gentleman was the last, great ratings blockbuster for a weekender, and is much beloved.

I liked Young Lady and Gentlemen.
My notes- there are some fun bits in the first episode, but after that it slows down. I stopped and started watching it for about the next 10 episodes before I got caught and really enjoyed it. The ML is good of course, but Lee See-Hee as the FL is radiant on screen. Ahn Woo-Yeon as the brother started to shine in the second half.
Repeated tropes- there are 50 or so episodes, so just when you think something has been resolved, it hasn't. This was the first weekender I watched, so I found this a bit frustrating!
Netflix Argghhh- They cut the best scenes. I assume for music copyright reasons. Search for them on Youtube or tag me when you get to them and I will help you find them. ( It should be obvious when you get to them, or if you do start watching I can go find exactly which episodes and tell you)

2

Another beanie from Aus here ☺️ (G’day!).

Hope you’ll feel better soon, Neolttwigi.

I’ve watched a show (a C-drama) that has a part cut off on Viki but Netlix has it in full.

2

omg @claire2009 I had no idea - hello! maybe we should attempt to host our own DB meet ups one day like the European Beanies do hahaha but it'd be a trek and then some if we all conveniently happen to be in different states 😆

also out of curiosity, which c-drama was it that was cut off in part on Viki?!

2

I'm in VIC, sometimes travel to NSW, happy for an excuse to travel to SA or TAS or QLD, I haven't had a holiday in a while. WA probably a bit to hard though.

2

@lapislazulii @Mazarin I'm more than happy to travel from NSW for DB meet ups in Australia!! If that happens, we should invite beanies from NZ as well 😚

That drama is Here to heart. It's the part where the FL was confronted by the SFL's fans and the ML came to her rescue. It's a 48-episode series so I don't remember the exact episode, and I'm not sure if there're any other parts being cut off too, it's too long to remember. I accidentally caught it on my rewatch. I first watched it on Viki and then rewatched it on Netflix.

2

@Mazarin @claire2009 inviting NZ beanies is a great idea - I'm also in VIC but would love an excuse to go interstate (I've never been can you believe!), we should try plan something later this year or something and see how it goes!

And ahhh Here to Heart, I've not watched it yet but have heard of it. It is really interesting though that Viki cut it off in part but Netflix didn't because I always assumed Netflix was more prone to fine-tuning for copyright etc and Viki usually streamed as it is on air.

3

@lapislazulii Here to heart is a cheese and trope fest, but it's beautiful to look at, and the chemistry between the FL and ML is overflowing. And both Zhang Han and Janine Chang have very expressive yearning eyes.

2

Yes, lets have a group! I have been getting ahead of myself and making up names-
Australia and New Zealand Advocates of K-drama (ANZAK)
or Australia and New Zealand Asiadrama Crusaders (ANZAC, with apologies to real ANZACs) what do you think?

3

@Mazarin hehehe I love it, ANZAK sounds cool! Making group names is so fun, I'm going brainstorm some too and try make a fun acronym work like KOALA or something :D

And @minniegupta1 yes you should've! 😉 but also if you're ever in this corner of the world, do let us know so we can say hi and maybe even be gracious tour guides!!

3

@lapislazulii @Mazarin I love ANZAK too!! I came up with "Aukibeans" 😅

2

KOALA is fun. I got Korean Online Auditorium Melodrama Appreciators, how about you?

3

Yeah, I somehow decided Melodrama began with an "L". What can I say? I have been a bit ill and my brain does not entirely work..

3

We’ll get KOAMA then 🤣😂

1

@Mazarin if it helps I didn't even notice till you pointed it out 😂 I didn't have much luck, best I could do KOALAANZ beyond KOrean drAma Lovers Association Australia and New Zealand. Aukibeans sounds so cute though!! @claire2009

3

I am loving the group naming and the meet up planning. I think you should do a roll call on an Open Thread or a fan wall. Once you know the names you can tag everyone in to a post and make it happen. I think @sicarius is in your part of the world too.

2

Dang! I always knew we should have moved to Australia. 😂

Queen of Tears, ep 13 only
I liked the moving out of both young couples (high time!) and the it is closer to the airport reason left me giggling. 🙂
BUT what an utterly ridiculous way to bring the Amnesia Trope!! 😆
I also have to admit I had no desire to watch ep 14. (I will watch it together with the finale.)

Piggybacking Sunjae
I enjoyed all the high school scenes (uri second lead included) and heart fluttering moments 😊, but now I'm excited for the changed future when it seems that Sol and Sunjae will be finally equal in age.

1958 Detective Jehoon, ep.1 only
It was fun, but I'm not sure I am in the right mood.

Will Love in Spring, 5 eps, cdrama
Heroine is coming home for a short break (she needs rest after a small operation, but doesn't tell her family to not to let them be worried) and meets on train her old schoolmate, our Hero. Hero is a very professional (and very closed) undertaker and Heroine is... very forward and likes to tease him. 🙂 Sparks fly, tension builds up... and there is some old history we slowly reveal (=sort of cute high school scenes). We also see snippets from Hero's demanding work environment and Heroine has her own burden to carry. Besides the main couple, I like the chaotic dynamic of Heroine's family (Little Sis is played by young Heroine from Hidden Love) and Hero's grandma (who tries to find a wife for her grandson and is not ashamed to employ the whole town for that 😁).
Little spoiler: There is a very very nice kiss at the end of Ep.5!!! 🥰
Update after another 3 eps: What an unexpected turn of events. First comedy, then tragedy, I laughed and cried. Still very very good. And the actors are great.

Live Watches
The Midnight Studio: Bom’s hug that went straight through Ki-joo was as devastating as Seong-ho and Ji-won’s date was adorable. I hope our stabby murderer is actually dead after that fall, but I won’t really believe it until I see a body. This isn’t my first kdrama.

Queen of Tears: If someone just described the plot of this drama to me, I don’t think I would find it super appealing. So why do I still like it so much? I wasn’t surprised when the whole situation fell apart in ep 14 (It’s ep 14! It’s supposed to be dire!) and I’m not expecting them to get Eun-쓰레기 out of the picture immediately, but I hope they leave time to wrap everything up nicely.

Older Dramas
Our Blooming Youth: I’m nearing the end of my rewatch and this whole drama just makes me feel warm inside. There are other ones that are crafted better, have less annoying ministers, and don’t rush the ending so much, but this drama makes me feel so many things that it ends up beating some of those out anyway. It was in my top ten for a while when it came out and I can’t seem to remember why it isn’t still in there…

Random
Physical 100 (season 2): I FINALLY realized where I knew Lee Jae-yoon from - he was the lying ex fiance of Oh Hae-young in Oh Hae-young Again! I had looked him up super briefly before but just read a little “here’s what he’s most known for” section and they didn’t include this drama, which is the only one I’ve seen of his, I’m pretty sure. Ok, back to watching people haul weights through a maze (strangely riveting).

Queen of Tears - This one took a dip in my books with Eun-seong parading in Germany.
However, it maintained its highs so well. The Hongs are already missing Yongduri. They could have discussed Hae-in's surgery separately but Hongs took it to Yongduri to ponder over. I was worried that when the Hongs passed through their phase, they'd probably return to their life and continue as if Yongduri never happened. I loved the thought that their stay there made an impression on all of them, including Lady Hong.
The video call too. I liked how everyone laid it bare with the things they've done on their ends. And when Hae-in pleaded her case to them, they accepted her decision even though it hurt them so much. I love this two families.

But I really don't know how the ToD aftermath changed her decision. I mean Hyun-woo's outburst of grief. She always knows her husband will lose it if anything happens to his wife. He has been vocal about it, both in words and in deeds. That's why he was content with her not remembering him should she have a memory loss. So I don't think the ToD influenced her decision to take the surgery in any way. And if it did, it was only a very minute percentage, but never was it the pivotal factor.

Find Me In Your Memory - I've been putting this off for a long time so I thought to get into it since I'm not that into most of what's airing at the moment.
So far so good, I'm enjoying it. But I do find it a bit contrived that Ha-jin shares a lot of similarities with Jung Seo-yeon, Jung-hoon's late girlfriend. I understand if they might have read the same book and cherished the same quote. But, ballet as well? It's too much of a coincidence. That's not a good premise for a relationship. I'm still at episode 5 so I don't know how they progress things.
Lee Joo-bin looks very beautiful here. Those red shoes were enough to captivate anyone.
The Kim Eun-ho and Ro Woon cameo were a delight.

Blood Free - Mirroring the thoughts of a beanie, I also, "without any doubt, don't personally see anything immoral regarding the emergency procedure that was done on Chae-woon esp. given the do-or-die circumstances. But of course San's "secretly repairing" Chae-woon's ear was just plain wrong, not only was it not necessary for life-saving purpose so of course you need consent, San's intension itself was like 1 part benign 9 parts malicious."

San went overboard by calibrating it to the highest decibel. It is no longer a BF cochlear implant of some sort. He made it a personal vendetta for reasons I don't understand beyond jealousy and/or he made Chae-won into a lab rat in that moment.
I don't think the procedure gave him superhuman strength. But the superhuman earing is outta here.

Queen of Hearts: She is surprised every time she encounters deep feelings that people actually have especially towards herself. On the one hand, she interprets everything as "oh, they want me, but of course, because I am beautiful". On the other hand, in her family, only idiots show their feelings. And Crazy Aunt.
They have changed a bit ... in Yongduri. But she still to some extend expects Hyun-woo to promise her the moon and the stars, and then be a bit sad, and then forget her. That he actually breaks down uncontrollably is unexpected ... also, she expects lies, so him confessing while being drunk and halfway as if talking to himself was a smart trick on his side. She didn't believe his sober declarations.

Find Me in Your Memory is my favorite K-drama of all time. It is a hidden gem that I wish more people would watch and enjoy. There are definitely very good reasons for the similarities between Ha Jin and Seo Yeon beyond just contrived coincidences, and when you learn the whole truth it’s going to rip your heart out. The OTP is also rock solid, even if it was initiated by Ha Jin’s hilarious revenge on Jung Hoon for his high-handed dismissal of her.

HIDE (Ep. 9-10) I would not say these were the best episodes of the series. Episode 9 was slow and the trial was basically paying off a past sin with another lie. But nothing ever appeases Baker Lady Joo whose sole mission in life is to destroy Na. The final chess piece is Bom, who is suddenly under child welfare services which allows her to be kidnapped by Grandma without any red flags to the authorities. Of course the Haesan residents were investors in the development that Joo has now pulled from them (at a loss of their savings) in an attempt to frame the Cha family for malfeasance. FIL political career goes up in smoke as quickly as a piece of cigarette paper. Cha is surprised he is arrested not for murder but a lesser included charge of assault and kidnapping. The only unexpected element was Joo’s minion turning on her. When Na meets CEO Choi it looks like they had a hidden plan from the beginning to take down Joo. If true, then Na may have more “determination” i.e. tortious schemes than Joo; as the old saying goes, “It takes one to know one.” As the series went on, sympathy for Na has begun to wane. Fighting evil Joo with more evil does not put you on the moral high ground but in harms way. The final deal with the Devil, evil CEO Choi, will bring that to bare.

SHOGUN (Finale) Epic series with excellent but reserved performances by Japanese cast. It took a long time to realize that Blackthorne was not the central point of the series but a surrogate for the viewer who is suddenly caught up in unfamiliar and confusing ritual honor and obligations of feudal Japan during the beginning of substantive change in its society.

However, the finale went out with a sigh. There were a lot of viewers who really liked it. But there was no great final battle; we were only told in a ten second “tell” what would happen. (Perhaps the show ran out of money as the 6 month shoot turned into a 10 month film schedule. Side note: It was really annoying that the finale on FX had more commercials than actual story content.) It is hard to believe that Ishido would collapse without one violent attempt to kill Toranaga. (Not clearly shown, but in history, the battle was fought and Ishido lost as the regent armies abandoned him.) If the last theme was “letting go,” than the high water mark was Blackthorne taking Fuji to the sea to pour ashes into the water (his seafaring ritual not her tradition) and he dropping Mariko’s cross as closure. The same was true for Toranaga letting go his good friend Yabushige who betrayed him but yet allowed Crimson Sky to work. Even Mariko’s obnoxious husband let go his ill will towards Blackthorne to help raise his ship for repairs. A Barbarian and Savages could respectfully work together. But those character changes, and the flash forward of old man Blackthorne having fractured dreams about his past was a disappointing and ambiguous end for a series that had built up real tension and laser point conflict through its characters...

... raw ambitions. Apparently, honor and obedience trumps all emotions. Bloodshed for fear’s sake and blind loyalty does not make peace; it was the meaning put into a single life that sets a poetic journey to the future. I wished the series concluded with more action and a clear glimpse of the future since Toranaga’s ruthless disposal of people for his peace was tenuous as the rice paper death poem of his friend. Overall, it was a great series and a rare well-crafted epic US cable miniseries.

APARTMENT 404 (Finale) 2003 High School. The most interesting thing again was the history behind the episode. It explains why school bullying and violence is such a flashpoint scandal in Korea today. Organized gangs recruited students to become criminals in order for teens to get money to live a cool, consumer-centric entertainment lifestyle. I doubt there will be a season 2 for this show.

Chief Detective 1958: 8.1

Queen of Tears: 6.0 How did they know the new experimental treatment would be a 99.99% effective source of damnesia? Did they test it on dozens of subjects who then forgot the consent forms they had signed, or did they just know because they understand Kdramaland?
Were you crying because of:
1: The makjangky stuff the show wanted you to cry over?
2: Grief and shock over what happened to the show you once liked?
3: Crying? I don't remember any crying. I don't remember anything before Monday. Who are you?

Missing Crown Prince: 8.0 Day 3 had promising situational humor, day 4 was a slight letdown.

Lovely Runner The Which Soul Is In Sol When Show: 6.5 I'm fine with straightforward time travel like in Faith, Queen In-hyun's Man, etc, but I got enough confusing timey-wimey-ness in A Time Called You to last me quite a while.

Midnight Photo Studio: 6.0 And it takes her how many episodes to remember that time she was hiding from the baddies?? Sigh.

Blood Free: 6.5 So in Moving Han Hyo-joo had super hearing; this time it's her future love interest (?) who gets it?

Goodbye Earth: 1.9 Quite fitting that a show that promises the end of the world impacts on a Friday Night of Doom. But I have escaped my Doom by losing interest about 19 minutes in. Unless/until others praise it to the skies, I'm out. Goodbye Show.

Little known fact - if a writer doesn't put enough damnesia into her story they take away her writers guild card.

I get this, but the deliberately confusing timey-wimey stuff is exactly what I love! And I enjoy having to figure out complex time-travel (or alternate universe) rules and even making my own study guide as I go along. I have pages of notes about some shows. I can understand why other viewers might not want to do something that feels so much like work, though, and that obsessive approach has definitely gotten me too invested in shows that weren't worth the trouble in the past. I'm still optimistic that Lovely Runner will be worth the effort.

Lovely Runner: I feel like a hypocrite for shipping adult Sol with 19-year-old Sun-jae. Even though she is in her 19-year-old body, mentally, she's 34. She calls herself noona, Tae-sung calls her noona, she calls the students kids those days. This is literally the reason why I hated Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol with the fire of a thousand burning suns. Not because he got a terminal illness, not because he faked his death, not because he returned five years later like nothing happened, but because he was a 19-year-old underage minor. I was even uncomfortable in Twenty-Five Twenty-One, and their age gap was only four years. Sol and Sun-jae are 15 years! I love that Sun-jae fell for 19-year-old Sol. Usually in body-swap romances, the hero or heroine falls for the soul (Oh My Ghostess, Big, Mr. Queen, Alchemy of Souls, or Tae-sung), so it's always a cop-out when they end up with the body, but 19-year-old Sol was his first love. The "I'll Be There" OST is so emotional, especially Byeon Woo-seok's vocal in the final chorus. No wonder Sol cried seeing her bias sing again. I'm going to be annoyed if crazy taxi driver is the one who killed Sun-jae in the present. I need this serial killer plotline to be one and done with. The funniest scene this week was Sun-jae Cyworld stalking Tae-sung, who then gifted his 100,000th visitor 30 acorns. Sun-jae slumping down in his chair in humiliation made me lmao. Tae-sung is total ulzzang.

Queen of Tears: Hyun-woo and Hae-in's honeymoon phase is the reason why I watch romances. Their constant touching and kissing while washing dishes were so cute. Maybe I would've been invested in their romance if Hae-in were an orphan, but her family ruined the romance for me. They really could've been happy if they had lived alone. I shrieked when Hyun-woo's dad told Hyun-woo's brother, "If someone asks you who your father is, don't give them my name." That's a meta-reference to Pyo Chi-su's poem in Crash Landing on You! I squealed when we found out that Secretary Kim had turned and come to Hyun-woo's side.

The Midnight Studio I’m not really feeling attached to any character.

Nothing Uncovered The FL’s choices about her marriage are really weird.

Lovely Runner I’m more interested in the future because I want both characters being the same age even if they're super cute as highschool students.

Hide I said she should have sent her daughter far from this big mess.

Chief Detective 1958 I thought I will be more interested by this era but the story of the 2 episodes didn’t make me curious or nostalgic.

Queen of Tears I’m ready for the end. I will miss KSH and KJW on my screen every week.

Blood Free I wish the focus was more about the ethics and less about investigation/murder.

Under the Gun Zuho looks good :D

Will Love in Spring (cdrama) I really like the characters, the bond between the members of the family, friends, etc. Both leads have unique characteristic (his job, her leg) and it makes the story interesting. The actors are really good.

Carry Sun-jae and Run: 🏃‍♂️‍➡️❤️ The first six episodes were pure, butterfly-inducing magic. It will be interesting to see where they go from that cliffhanger (and that preview). This sounds bad, but I've been hoping since day one (*that sus doorbell*) that Sun-jae was murdered, because it will be easier to save him from a murderer, than from himself.

Welcome2Life: (20-23) He's back and is confronted with the reality of who he is, what he's done, and what he's given up. He has a new resolve and a scorched-earth attitude! It's really good, but the cases are SUPER dark - almost too much for me 😰

Like Flowers in Sand: (1-6) This is a straight-up masterpiece. Every episode is crafted with the same care as a movie. It encapsulates the intrinsic magic of kdramas: the best ones are an experience: watching good stories, well told, unfold before your eyes. How did this (and Jang Dong-yeon) get snubbed at the Baeksang nominations?? HOW? I can tell this drama is going straight into my top-ten rankings.

Miscellaneous
Hopeful's Mom's Reviews she watched and enjoyed Eye Love You. Her take: "It's very thin on plot - very thin - but Chae Jong-hyeop is the best boyfriend ever. And so adorable. So. adorable." (We're both Chae Jong-hyeop fans, if you couldn't tell, haha) She also tried Chicken Nugget: "I'm trying to watch it, but it might be too absurd." I am glad you are enjoying little ENA’s masterpiece LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND (Netflix). It is now my favorite Jang Dong-yoon drama. He (and the extra 30 pounds he put on for his role) gave a wonderful performance as a ssireum wrestler. I give a lot of credit to Director Kim Jin-woo (who also directed another favorite SUITS (2018)) for keeping a laser like focus on what this sports drama was all about. Sports. One thing I joke about upcoming sports dramas is how much actual ‘sport’ we will see.
In SAND all the matches were thrilling.
(One tiny gripe though. The hitting. Doo-shik’s rather constant smacking of Baek-du really got on my nerves.)

One more reply. Jang Dongyeon is an incredible actor for sure. It's an amazing performance... Baek-du seems simple, but through Jang Dong-yeon's portrayal, it's clear he's uninhibited in an almost childlike way, but certainly not a simpleton - he's just completely transparent and without guile. What a wonderful character and performance. It really should have been recognized ❤️

3

Totally agree. I enjoyed Jang Dong-yoon in all three of his 2023/early 2024 projects: KBS’s OASIS (Viki US), Netflix’s DAILY DOSE OF SUNSHINE and ENA’s LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND. I personally don’t include CUPID in JDY’s 2023 body of work and didn’t watch it. Somehow I didn’t know of his late 2022 6 episode mini series THE KING OF THE DESERT. The director also directed D.P. (2021). Apparently it is a ‘Watcha’ production, an outfit I just learned about. One of my favorites Jin Goo is also in it. HOWEVER, after a search, for me to legally watch I would have to pay Amazon Prime $9.99 for the six episode season. Lol, sorry JDY but I decline.

Whenever his upcoming historical romance SECRET MEMOIRS OF THE SUSEONG PALACE/MEMOIRS OF MERCURY PALCE starts to get some traction there will probably be angst expressed about the age difference between ML Jang Dong-yoon (31) and FL Shin Eun-soo (21). I will wait for further developments on that project. I have seen it referred to as a historical fantasy rom-com.

Lovely Runner (Episode 5-6) - Mood: C-
Ah yes, a serial killer. While the show continues tugging at all our hearts, I guess there are limits to the writer’s creativity as we also saw a love triangle, noble idiocy, terminal illness, kidnapping. I wasn’t so thrilled with the use of misunderstandings and coincidences to drag out or develop the story as needed. But maybe we’ll resolve all these stupid tropes by next week?

Queen of Tears (Episode 13-14) - Mood: D
Well, this was the penultimate week and we all know that dramas love to pile on the most bullshit of last-minute conflicts in this week (the shitty ones, mostly), but even then this makjang still threw at us murder, kidnapping and amnesia, which btw were with different people in previous weeks. I guess the show at least narrowly avoided noble idiocy despite flirting with it.

Hide (Episode 9-10) - Mood: D-
Oh, the preview shows a potential birth secret that’s waiting to be unravelled in the finale? With Bom written out of the plot, we won’t have to see her be a pawn in the dirty fight between the adults, which I guess from a meta standpoint works great for the child actress. It’s funny seeing Lee Min Jae be scared seeing his senior actresses brawling it out in the BTS.

The Midnight Studio (Episode 12-13) - Mood: D
So that’s why Ahn Chang Hwan was casted, silly me forgot about the typecasting! And of course it’s a coincidence that the evil spirit was in the right place and time to tempt and possess the cop. We still don’t know why the evil spirit is too obsessed with the camera but we have time for filming Beauty Inside. Yeah, good luck writing a ghost-human OTP.

QUEEN OF TEARS wraps up this weekend. It has been my favorite show. But I can also see where Javabeans is coming from about the final story arc. But I am sticking it out for our lead characters.

The new Daily SU JI AND U RI lacks the spirit of UNPREDICTABLE FAMILY which came before it. After 21 episodes I have simply called it quits. I think that we got spoiled with UNPREDICTABLE FAMILY and I hope that its writer will give us more shows in the future. To fill in my lunchtime viewing I have taken to watching the excellent 2017 Weekender MY GOLDEN LIFE instead- it seems well written and the FL is played by my favorite actress, Shin Hye-sun.

My wife has now watched the well rated YONG AN DREAM when episodes of the excellent ‘historical’ Chinese Costume Drama BLOSSOMS IN ADVERSITY ran out. She enjoyed it. As for other Chinese Costume dramas she has enjoyed ANCIENT LOVE SONG and also HARD TO FIND. When she wanted an English language costume drama she went to Netflix and watched THE WITCHER even though she found it somewhat weird.

The new weekender BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC is not dragging but rather clipping right along. The contrast with the previous one could not be greater: That one wasted time with the worst sort of timewasting filler. This one does not.

Oh, bummer about Suji and Wuri, I'm on ep.9 and so far like it, but you are not giving me a good preview...😬

I completely forgot I advanced with my Unpredictable Family catch up and finally reached the wedding episode. It was a good one, sweet, funny and true to all characters. 🙂

I was also planning to catch up with the weekender and join the hangout, but I'm somehow not able to get into it...

It was not that SUJI AND WURI was bad but that it simply stopped holding my interest.

As for starting a Weekender- you have to be in the right mood for that. MY GOLDEN LIFE came out in 2017- and I have just started it now.

Ah, OK, thanks for the explanation, it is quite possible I will drop it as well, especially with the May dramas approaching.

I had to skip Golden Life in 2017 because of the Male Lead and his real life scandal, I'm more thinking if not to come back to Ojakgyo Brothers.

Scandals can definitely detract from a drama and if it were not for Shin Hye-sun it might have had the same effect on me as well- I am definitely NOT watching the show because of the male lead. I am tolerating his presence and nothing more.

Queen of Tears: Going to take a four hours emotional roller coaster ride.
Chief Detective 1958: It mixes crime, friendship, romance and comedy. A nice Friday-Saturday drama from MBC, a nice change and solace after the QoT ride.
Midnight Studio: Loving it as there are lots to learn
Hide: I can't believe it is ending this week.
Blood Free: JJH and the young bodyguard is doing a good job!

Old drama:
Mask: An old favourite of mine, featuring JJH. Watching it makes me look forward to his next romcom drama.

COMPLETED
Unlock My Boss: I really loved this drama, even more than I thought I would. It's engaging, entertaining, and delivered at just the right pace and tone. Despite the fantasy storyline at its core (the boss being trapped in his cellphone), it actually never veers into silly. The ending is surprising and spot on. This is classic k-drama, tightly written, well-acted, nicely filmed, and solidly produced. Even the soundtrack is fabulous. Of course I loved the main leads, but actually, the standout for me here is Kim Sung-Oh who is an exceptionally good character actor. I loved his journey in this story 👍👍

WATCHING
Carry Sun-Jae and Run: I can't remember the last time I did this much squee-ing, omo'ing, and second-hand-embarrassment squirming while watching a k-drama. I'm having so much fun! I love it all. 다!
The Midnight Studio: eps 11-13 This was a great trio of episodes. The back stories are both shocking and poignant, and I love how all the individual threads of each person's story are woven together. I'm also really enjoying the deepening relationship of the ML/FL and the resolution to Nam Goo's story.
Missing Crown Prince: My 4-episode trial was a success and I'm going to continue on, even if I have to brave it alone 😬 Let's see how long I last haha.
Flex X Cop: Squeaked in an episode this week, so I have 3 left. Still loving it!

Have a great week beanies! 🌸

Hi beanies!

My week started with a try on Missing Crown Prince, but I dropped it halfway the first episode and I still don't know if I will give it another try.

What I am watching this week:

_ Lovely Runner (4 out of 16).
I can't say I'm in love with this show or its characters as much as the rest of beanies and I'm not hooked yet, but it's funny and easy to watch, and it makes me laugh many times. Maybe my problem is that I have watched better dramas (or at least some shows I love more) with similar situations before. I can't help comparing it with "Shining for one thing" or "Twinkling Watermelon".

_ C-drama "When I fly towards you" (20 out of 24). Totally loving this cute and natural "slice-of-life" about a group of five friends in their teens. China makes this kind of dramas wonderfully and it happens they are my cup of tea. This one gets better and better, btw. The second half is beautiful.

Have a nice weekend!

Update:

_ Lovely Runner (6/16). I'm glad this drama is getting better. I would like the show to be more "natural" and less "cartoon", but it's ok.

_ Finished c-drama "When I fly towards you". Beautiful!
I have not watched "Hidden Love", but I always hear it's too sweet. However, "When I fly towards you" has the exact amount of sugar and 24 episodes is a perfect length for this show. I never got used to the FL and her personality/way of talking, but I love the rest of the characters. Highly recommended.

Glad you enjoyed WIFTY!! Hidden Love is indeed very saccharine but the comforting and steady warmth of WIFTY hits all the right notes. I think beyond my love for how unwavering and steady the main couple were, the fact that we had a developed (well, some I wish we had more development of but that's me being greedy) knit of supporting characters making up the plot tapestry also made it feel more full-bodied compared to Hidden Love where it was really just the two leads in the spotlight.

Hide is gearing up for the revenge finale and Midnight Studio for a very teary finale I guess… Nothing Uncovered is still on hold until I finish Hide.
Missing Crown Prince is so-so, I’ll continue watching for now. I was right in suspecting that the doctor is the Dowager Queen’s lover, I guess it was pretty obvious.
Blood Free is well done and thrilling, this kind of show is getting to be Disney+’s specialty? To my surprise, political thriller Designated Survivor: 60 Days made me go “Just one more episode…” in the middle of the night, it’s so gripping; and it had this tiny sliver of romance with Son Suk Gu just now…
I started Chief Detective 1958 and it’s fun. I especially noticed that not only cases, settings, title song, music and costumes are nostalgic, but also the way of speaking and the humor (cows, snakes and slapstick comedy).
BL corner: Taiwanese Unknown is really great, even though Viki is a couple of episodes behind and I haven’t even gotten to the interesting stuff 😉; it has a unique story with great acting even without that. Which could not be said about Thai/SK Love Is Like A Cat: it’s not getting better; but I watch it anyhow because it’s short and has Mew (the actor, no other cat in sight so far?!).
KDrama friend project: Queen of Tears is fantastic and we both love it, that will be one to rewatch. Besides the fantastic acting, we love to see the parts that were filmed in Berlin and Potsdam; even the hospital room and the prison cell are actually German ones, and not just rebuilt in a studio. Lovely Runner is a great watch together (to Ep.5 now), it gives us everything we want from a drama!

Lovely Runner (through Ep. 6): Why am I getting My Lovely Perfect Stranger vibes? Must be the serial killer. I have no idea what to expect from the next time jump, but as long as we get more Sol and Sun-jae it's all good. What a star turn this is turning out to be for Byun Woo-seok, and much deserved too.

Midnight Studio (through Ep. 13): Everything and everyone is connected! And it actually works in this drama. The policeman turning out to be the killer, and not just the usual K-drama nosy/incompetent cop, makes so much sense. I hope HEA for Bom and Ki-joo stands for "happy ever after" and not "happy ever afterlife." 🎂

Beauty and Mr. Romantic (through Ep. 10): The pacing continues to impress. So many things are happening! 😘 (And I'm not even counting all the mom scenes I'm fast-forwarding.) Next up: Birth secret no more? I'm also looking forward to seeing more of Do-ra's younger brother, who looks to be a member of Team Rational (as opposed to Team Delusional). Meanwhile the leads are turning their monologues into comedy gold.

Missing Crown Prince (through Ep. 4): Plot is moving at light-speed, so I'm still watching -- albeit while also folding laundry. With 16 episodes to go, I can't imagine what twists are yet to come -- I didn't think the CP would be tortured so soon! My oft-repeated sageuk wish applies here as well: More OTP, less ministers.

Blossoms in Adversity (through Ep. 29): Beautifully entertaining, extremely satisfying C-drama. It's as much about what makes a real family (hint: not just blood or marriage) as it is about the main couple's lovely, mature romance. Had the women of the Hua family not gone through the titular adversity, they might have remained mere strangers sharing a mansion. It'll be interesting to see how their sisterhood and newfound self-worth influence the household if/when the men return from exile.

Will Love in Spring (through Ep.10): This C-drama is bringing all kinds of heat. Sizzling: the OTP who circle each other like half-wary, half-entranced prizefighters. Warm: the wonderfully depicted familial relations, especially among the FL and her siblings, and the small-town elders who share wisdom and walks through the countryside.

Teasing Master Takagi-san (through Ep. 6): Nothing like knowing the FL is about to move to Paris to stir the feelings of the shy ML, although he's determined not to reveal his disappointment. This little show remains heartfelt and so respectful of the inner lives of its early-teen protagonists.

it was nice to see Do-ra's younger brother finally appear on the scene in BEAUTY AND MR ROMANTIC. It was even nicer that the first signal sent by the writer is younger brother rescuing Mi-ra from a sexual assault. I am not reading anything into that beyond the fact that he is obviously one of the good guys- and part of Team Rational as you put it.

My wife has been loving BLOSSOMS IN ADVERSITY, watching each new episode as soon as it is subtitled.

WATCHING AND MY HEART IS DANCING LIKE NO ONE’S WATCHING

LOVELY RUNNER
This show gives me all the feels from genuine laughs and smiles to heart moving moments. It’s such an easy watch, and I mean that in the best way because I can just enjoy it without making me want to pick it apart. Even though there are things I do not like so much, like the secondary love line who seem to not make much sense or have any common sense when around each other, this show just invites me to notice and appreciate the details and beats of Sol and Sun Jae (ah)’s story, individually and together. An easy watch doesn’t mean simple—there are so many layers going on, whether it is because one or both are in a time loop or because it’s often true to life that we feel so many things at once—hope, regret, courage, insecurity, joy and sorrow. Leaving aside the rules and logic of time travel and whether events or fates can actually be changed, the conceit of time travel here makes Sol live life again knowing that it is ephermeral, which makes her appreciate it more and also makes its moments more beautiful. These various levels of the show, executed exquisitely by Byun Woo Seok and Kim Hye Yoon, similarly makes me also appreciate and savor the show in the moment and because I know it won’t last forever. So good.

WILL LOVE IN SPRING
Wow. What an unexpected surprise. It’s as if the drama gods heard my wish for Chang Hee from My Liberation Notes to have a drama showing his life as a funeral director and then paired him up with a kickass female lead whose spirit and determination just barrels past the facades of equanimity that he has deliberately erected. The acting by Li Xian and Zhao Yutong is natural and believable, the chemistry is top notch and on fire, and the romance is and feels grown up. The episodes, clocking in at 45 minutes or so, are slow moving so it feels like a slice of life drama that you can appreciate and still moves the story along with no filler. Another worthwhile watch.

Under the Microscope: This packs a lot of nuanced character development and exploration of late-Ming bureaucracy into its relatively short episode count, and has a dynamite cast. I just wish the female characters hadn't been "love-interest-zoned" so quickly and completely.

Wave Makers: Thanks to the Beanie who recommended this one months ago! So far, it's a fascinating look at the inner workings of a Taiwanese presidential campaign, and it also has a queer female lead who's in a happy, fulfilling long-term relationship. And her partner actually appears on screen! And they interact just like any other normal couple! See, Korea, this isn't that hard.

Lovely Runner: I tried. I made it through one and a half episodes and just couldn't do it anymore. Partly that's because I really, really don't get hardcore idol fan culture, but it's also because while I might be able to forgive an actual teenager acting like an eight year old, I can't forgive a 34-year-old woman in a teenager's body acting like an eight year old. Can we please move beyond the idea that stupidity in middle-aged female leads is supposed to be cute and endearing? I'll go hide under a table now.

I enjoyed Under the Microscope and I am with you on Lovely Runner. It's hard to find any negative criticism about it anywhere, so it actually feels churlish to offer a critique. I've watched up to episode 6, and the show doesn't offer much if you aren't into bump and blush romance where everyone is high on sparkles and butterflies, including the audience. I was kind of curious what would happen with the plot, but the story and the protagonist are pretty brainless so far. I do think the main male love interests are charming, but the drama wastes too much time on scenes that do little to develop the characters or the plot. Usually, when a character time-travels or transmigrates, he or she reacts in a series of stages, from disbelief/disorientation to a learning/investigatory phase that ultimately leads the character to adapt or devise a plan in response to the information gained. Our protagonist responds emotionally but spends little time thinking about what she actually knows or how her actions based on limited information could have unpredictable ramifications. It's much easier to appreciate the heroine's struggles if her actions make sense and her mistakes are unavoidable. When they seem to arise from thoughtlessness, though, I start to wonder why I'm rooting for her.

I didn't get as far you have, but I'm generally not a fan of cutesy, tropey romance, so I'm probably the wrong audience for the show anyway. That being said, the female lead seems particularly dim in this one, especially given that she's supposed to be a fully grown adult, not a bumbling middle-school student.

However I loved Twinkling Watermelon because of the main characters, the retro vibes, the script...
It was a better and more endearing drama, imo.

2

I loved Twinkling Watermelon, not so much for the time travel logistics which were pretty perfunctory, but for the youthful exuberance, the central relationships, the way it dealt with disability and loss, and the fact that everyone in the past (even the time travelers) actually was a teenager, not an adult trapped in a teenage body.

3

Will Love in Spring: A show that you've been waiting for long actually meeting your expectations is a feeling I've long forgotten. But the show even exceeding expectations is so rare and THIS IS IT! This drama is SO Good and so much better than I thought in every way. Crisp story, great visuals and wonderful music. I think people here have been linking it to Meet Yourself or Fake it till you make it but the gist really is that it's a mature romance of people in their 30s. Such stories are so rare overall especially without involving adultery, murder, or being heavily focused on careers. Simply a romance done with great care of mature leads is rare and Wiil love in spring is doing it pretty well.
Lovely Runner: While I get th3 mature chemistry from WLIS, I get the sweet one from here. Still gping pretty strong and funny.
Blood Free: The story is interesting but too convoluted. I enjoy it as something different but it's nothing groundbreaking.
Queen of Tears: Dropped at ep 13. Regretted watching it for this long.
