Queen of Tears: Episodes 11-12

Family and friends come in clutch for our couple in light of our heroine’s sickness, our hero’s false charges at work, and the search for the hidden slush fund. In addition to yet more drama from our villain side of the story, the week ends with another incident that rocks the Hong family.

EPISODES 11-12

After last week’s big press conference, Hae-in passes out and she’s rushed to the hospital. The devastated Hongs and Baeks rush down to Seoul, and Mommy Hong is especially gutted due to her ill-treatment and dismissal of Hae-in all along. Thankfully, Hae-in wakes up the next morning, and she can finally tell her husband to his face that she loves him. Hae-in also apologizes for not treating Hyun-woo better, and for leaving him all alone with her family, and the specificity of this apology means a lot to me. I thought the drama was going to gloss over this part, and I’m glad we circled back to it.

Hae-in then goes on to talk about her death, but none of us want to be reminded about this, so Hyun-woo tells her that he’ll give up on himself if she dies. “Cut the nonsense. You’re not going to die… I won’t let you.” I didn’t know curing cancer is one of Mr. Baek Hyun-woo’s many skills, but amen to that! In the spirit of apologies, Mommy Hong and Hae-in also have a tearful make-up session, but I’m the one who’s dehydrated from all the tears. Aigoo.

Queen of Tears: Episodes 11-12

BaekHong spends the rest of their time in the hospital serving couple goals, and making everyone jealous. Lol. Eun-seong is firmly planted in Team Jealous, and he’s riled up when he visits Hae-in and she tells him that she cut ties with him back in university because he always reached out to help whenever she was struggling, but he was the reason she struggled in the first place. “Maybe you should have liked me back before I did those things!” Eun-seong retorts. Pfft. Maybe you should get the memo and stop comparing yourself to Hyun-woo. But does Eun-stupid do that? Nope. So Hae-in slams him once more with facts. Sure, Hyun-woo was going to leave her, but that is past tense. “He’s with me right now. Need I explain more?” No, dear, you don’t.

But to prove that his delulu brain is not capable of accepting the fact that he will never be an option for Hae-in, Eun-seong moves on to confront Hyun-woo for remaining by Hae-in’s side. He attempts to swing a punch at Hyun-woo, but our boxing champion is faster, and the entire Queen of Tears fandom erupts in cheers as Hyun-woo’s fist says hello to Eun-seong’s face. “I’m going to stay by [Hae-in’s] side forever. So don’t hold your breath and just get lost,” Hyun-woo says, before leaving Eun-screw-TF-off to lick his wounds in the corner.

Moving on to my least favorite part of this show: the business-y stuff. Grandpa Hong is out of his coma, and having tracked him to the hospital Eun-seong moved him to, Ms. Girlfriend takes him back to Queensville. Ms. Girlfriend and Eun-seong are on the hunt for Grandpa’s secret slush funds to make up for the Queens Group stocks that have plummeted since the press conference. But the bad news is that Grandpa has vascular dementia, so good luck trying to get any useful information out of him.

Thanks to Yang-gi and Hyun-woo’s other SNU lawyer friends, Eun-seong’s trumped up charges against Hyun-woo are proven false, and Hyun-woo lives to fight another day at Queens. Hyun-woo then tasks his friends to help track the flow of Grandpa Hong’s secret funds, and I loved how Hyun-woo and Hae-in got their hands on Grandpa’s shredded documents thanks to Secretary Na and the juice salesman Hae-in helped out a few episodes ago. Place your bets, guys — the race is on for which team will find Grandpa’s nine hundred billion won (!) first.

Team Evil is divided, and Grace has inserted herself back into their midst. But she’s playing both teams, and neither of them trust her. Heck, I don’t even think she trusts herself. On the other hand, Team Hong has never been more united. The Baeks and the Hongs bond over their joint effort to look after Hae-in, and even her white blood cell count rises in response to all that love. But I go from awww to oof when Hae-in tells Hyun-woo that she’s beginning to experience memory loss, and that she doesn’t want him to be next to her when her illness gets worse. Sigh. Girl, why not allow yourself to be loved through it all?

Back to the location of Grandpa’s funds, all of the hints point in one direction: Queensville! But the rain temporarily puts an end to BaekHong’s sleuthing, and Hae-in waits for Hyun-woo to bring the car over. Hyun-woo arrives less than a minute later, and off they go — until they get into a car chase. The chasing car cuts them off from the front, and the driver alights and walks up to their car. But wait, the driver is Hyun-woo! So who is in the car with Hae-in? From the reflection on her glass, Hae-in sees Eun-seong sitting in the driver’s seat, and it dawns on her that she mistook him for her husband. Damn that memory loss!

I knew something was odd the second “Hyun-woo” showed up. Everything from his expression to his body language was different and unsettling, and it all made sense with the Eun-seong reveal at the end. Kim Soo-hyun, the actor that you are! He nailed the Eun-seong mannerisms to a tee. Poor Mr. Delulu. The one time his crush gazed at him with eyes of love was when she mistook him for the man she loves. Serves him right for going along with Hae-in’s illusions instead of snapping her back to reality.

Now that the gig is up, Eun-smoke-and-mirrors locks Hae-in in the car, and tells her that it’d be better to lie to Hyun-woo that she was heading somewhere with him rather than admit that she mistook him for her husband. Hae-in insists on leaving the car, but when he unlocks the door, she steps out to assure Hyun-woo that she’s fine, and that she’s going with Eun-seong to see Grandpa at Queensville. I know that Hae-in has a plan up her sleeves, but it’s sooo annoying to watch Eun-smug look so pleased that she did as he said.

As Hyun-woo watches Eun-seong drive away with Hae-in, someone knocks him out from behind. Oh no! It’s Land Scammer, and he plans to kill Hyun-woo and stage it as suicide on Eun-seong’s orders. Wow! Not Eun-sinister sending a man to his death and going ahead to pick out wine and flowers for a romantic dinner with the man’s wife. What’s on the menu? A bowl of delulu, a dash of desperation, and a heaped ladle of audacity!

Eun-seong will do anything for a crumb of Hae-in’s affection including lying that he was the one who saved her from the drowning accident that killed her brother. But nothing he says penetrates Hae-in’s armor. She’s just here to see her grandfather — and give him a recording pen in case he gets his memories back.

Afterwards, Hae-in gets a little lost in the grounds at Queensville, but thankfully, Hyun-woo is by the back entrance to pick her up. Hae-in is hesitant to approach him because she’s not sure if it’s really him or her mind is playing tricks on her again. But those loving eyes laced with concern are undoubtedly Hyun-woo’s, and his “I don’t get beaten up,” arrogance — when she spots the injuries from his attack earlier on — confirms that the man standing in front of her is indeed her husband. That’s right, Land Scammer ended up not killing Hyun-woo after Hyun-woo opened his eyes to see that Eun-seong was going to abandon him after the murder.

Queen of Tears: Episodes 11-12

BaekHong heads to Hyun-woo’s post-divorce apartment, and the door passcode is also 1031 — their baby’s due date. The drama didn’t even let me tear up at this before hitting me with bouts of laughter at Hyun-woo’s panicked cleanup when it suddenly hit him that his apartment is a mess. Lool. With no family interference, and no extra rooms for people (*cough* Hyun-woo *cough*) to run and hide in instead of confronting their problems, perhaps their marriage would have turned out better if they had made this apartment their newlywed home instead of Queensville?

Moving on, we’re treated to BaekHong being all domestic with cooking, cuddling, teasing, and flirting, and Hae-in tells Hyun-woo that even if she was reborn a hundred times, she’d still marry him every single time. Hyun-woo has to loosen his tie to ensure that he doesn’t choke from all her compliments, but my single ass cannot relate to any of these things.

On the drive back to Yongdu-ri, Hyun-woo hands Hae-in a “divorce cancellation” ring, but Hae-in breaks our collective hearts when she turns him down. She comes clean about mistaking Eun-seong for him, and she tells him that she can’t make any promises with her unstable memory. Hae-in returns to the car to cry, Hyun-woo stands outside battling with his own emotions, the OST plays in the background, and I’m bawling all alone in my room.

Queen of Tears: Episodes 11-12

Back in Queensville, Ms. Girlfriend cannot stand to see her son heartbroken over a girl who used him, but Eun-seong replies that he has always known that Hae-in was using him. Using him to do what exactly? Mother and son must be high on cheap drugs. Eun-seong goes on to say that he’s used to people using him — after all, his own mother is part of the users squad. Eun-sob is quite pitiful since this “using” is the only form of love he has ever known, but I refuse to feel sorry for him.

Ms. Girlfriend replies that she never neglected Eun-seong. On the contrary, she arranged for the drunk driving accident that killed his abusive adoptive — non-drinking — parents, and the mysterious fire that killed the orphanage director who mistreated him. Whoa! Forget what I said last week about this woman not loving her son. Being a murderous psycho is actually Ms. Girlfriend’s way of loving Eun-seong, and she tells him that she won’t sit still if anyone — read: Hae-in — gets in the way of her goal of giving him everything from the chairmanship of Queens to the entire world. Pack up, people, it looks like we’ll have to vacate this planet for the mother-son duo.

Eun-seong is shocked by his mother’s revelation, and this is the first time I’ve seen him look so flabbergasted — a bit frightened by his mom, even. Ms. Girlfriend is the ultimate villain in this show, and now I wonder if she had something to do with the mysterious boating accident that almost drowned Hae-in and killed her brother.

In Yongdu-ri, Hyun-tae subtly brags about how his wife (cameo by Kim Shin-rok for their Reborn Rich reunion) overlooks his faults since Mummy Baek treats her daughters-in-law so well, and Soo-cheol gets depressed again thinking about his own wife. Meanwhile, said wife has run into trouble in the U.S. with the arrival of her baby daddy — the finance director at Queens Group who Soo-cheol knew to be her “brother.” Baby Daddy is a violent punk, and when he tells Da-hye that he set Soo-cheol up to take the fall for his illegalities in Korea, she feeds him sleeping pills and escapes back to Korea to inform Soo-cheol.

Soo-cheol doesn’t need any explanations to welcome the weary pilgrim to the Baek hotel, but Mommy Hong doesn’t care for Da-hye’s apology. But now that Soo-cheol has returned to his husband and fatherhood era, he stands up for his family. Biological or not, Geon-woo is his son, and Soo-cheol tells Da-hye that he doesn’t plan to let her and Geon-woo leave him this time. I chuckled when Da-hye reminded him that she’s his noona, but I totally melted when he told her to be quiet before hugging her. I still haven’t completely forgiven Da-hye, but at least she has repented and she’s making amends.

Queen of Tears: Episodes 11-12

The week draws to a close with the Hongs concluding on the panic room at Queensville as the location of Grandpa’s funds. But the problem is that Soo-cheol already mentioned the existence of the panic room to Eun-seong when he first moved in. I made an offhand comment back then that Soo-cheol might as well just have handed the blueprint for Queensville over to Eun-shark, and I cannot believe that I was actually on to something. The partial good news is that dementia Grandpa is the only one who actually knows the location of the panic room, and the concluding part of the good news is that Grandpa has been faking his dementia the whole time!

Ms. Girlfriend finds out that Grandpa is of sound mind, but it’s too late for her to do anything. Grandpa records something on Hae-in’s pen, and throws himself down the staircase. By the time the Hongs arrive the next morning to report Ms. Girlfriend for confinement, Grandpa is already dead! OMG! Beom-ja is crushed, and the rest of the family is numb. But thanks to Grandpa’s death, Ms. Girlfriend’s power of attorney is now null and void. Not Grandpa sacrificing himself to atone for his mistakes to the family.

Hyun-woo and the Hongs take Grandpa’s ashes on a last tour of Queensville, and they end up in Grandpa’s private elevator — which doubles as the hidden entrance to the panic room. Hyun-woo discovers the entrance, and we freeze frame on everyone’s collective shocked face as the door opens and they behold whatever it is that is in the panic room. I honestly hope the room hasn’t been emptied out because Eun-seong was previously in that elevator, and he might have seen the entrance.

The epilogues reveal Hyun-woo as the dude who doesn’t care about netizens’ disparaging comments about him, but is ready to unleash his SNU lawyer side when he sees one bad comment about his wife. Lol. We also learn that Hyun-woo went to a marine corps camp as a kid, and he was the one who actually saved Hae-in from drowning that day. Oh! My BaekHong is so meant for each other, and Eun-salty can go kick rocks.

With Hae-in’s worsening symptoms and all her dark jokes, I’m worried about BaekHong’s fate — even though I try not to. Still, I chose to trust in Park Ji-eun writer-nim and her track record of happy resolutions to “impossible” romances. Besides, with Grandpa’s expiration, I think the Hongs have had enough with the death plague.

That samgyupsal scene with the entire fam is probably my favorite scene in the entire show so far. Daddy Hong wanting to take over grilling duties and Hae-in being touched with everyone, especially the Moms finally getting along now and planning out the diet for her WBC count really shed me tears of joy.

Kinda nervous about the chairman's final house tour. What if Eun-sneaky already got to the panic room first and the Hong's saw the place empty and are held captive down there? (for a bit) Is Eun-sneaky the one they saw when the door opened? Is there a second door/vault down there? Or the slush fund wasn't there all along, and it's just some hidden family memorabilia? And did Hae-in take the pen recorder before or after they went down? I'm just betting all the answers is in that Buddha figure. Or if the whole slush fund is the Buddha itself🧐

And thanks a lot Hyun-woo's apartment! I thought I've seen the last of that 1031 code.

to be fair, the Hongs are endearing in the sense that they don't demand as often as other chaebols do. But because they're rich and out of touch, they do request ridiculous things. Still, I was expecting friction between the families and have been pleasantly surprised by how well they get along. Better than most kdrama in-laws.

@asianromance Very true. Also Daddy Hong was always formal and polite with the In-laws, even at the wedding. Mommy Hong was the one with airs and outrightly rejected Mommy Baek's hand of friendship time and again. Even when Mommy Baek came to visit after knowing about the divorce Mommy Hong was rather unpleasant.

I like your take on the Buddha figure, like there must be something more significant for DaHye to hold it like that when she came to Yongdu-ri.

Whatever bait he took, I feel that "taking grandpa for a last round" was definitely a trap, and I too thought that making them all prisoners down there was a likely thing for Eun-sung and Ms. Girlfriend to do.
But that kind of imprisonment is almost too scary and nightmarish even for this k-drama, where a woman lives with a family for 30 years and kills off several of them before admitting that yes, of course, she was in it for the money ... and I'm sure, some sort of revenge. I really hope we get to know about some sort of revenge motive.

Oooh! Oooh! The previews show that huge safe being opened. I bet that's what they find in the panic room, the locked safe. And the buddha has the combination. Grandpa left instructions on the pen recorder. And snake mom suggested the house tour because she figures they'll find the safe and be unable to open it either.

The Buddha thing is so true to A Good Plot you almost MUST be right. But they didn't have it with them down there, did they?
But Da-hye may have noticed the numbers, and she's the kind of girl who would remember them by heart.

There were many valuable items to steal but whay this big bulky item that will be hard to sell? I also would like to know how she got past airport customs with a 40 pound gold Buddha. They gave me a hard time with my 5 year old watch and wanted me to declare it and pay customs!

+1 on the samgyupsal scene! I have not personally forgiven Mama Hong (so many years of unnecessary trauma for Hae-in and no good excuse at all) but I still felt really happy Hae-in when Mama Hong showed that she made some good research on nutritious foods to take to up her WBC count.

I guess the producers wanted to end ep 12 on a cliffhanger but it felt a bit too rushed to cut from them arriving on the grounds to being in the lift. If I were the Hong family, I would kick out all their help staff because there's no knowing who could be trusted! Even if Eun-snake and MSH are out of the house, who knows which spy is going to pass them the CCTV footage of them meddling in the lift? Bah.

Love the Buddha idea though - hoping that's no Chekhov's gun!

I came away from this week's episodes with an appreciation for how the writers have made it so that Eun-sung's obsession is not cute, or adorable, but creepy, disruptive, dangerous, and pathetic. (Also, it's now very easy to see he gets obsession and inability to love from his mama, who's crazier than he is, OMG. I'm also glad she's giving him a taste of his own medicine).

All the family stuff made me sob. Hae-in and Hyun-woo are hilarious, especially Hae-in, and I was grateful for the laughs. I'm  in the minority with the Soo-cheol and Da-hye storyline because I just can't buy it, I'm sorry. I cannot see any genuine reconciliation after a betrayal of this magnitude, that touches not just Soo-cheol, but his entire family. Nope. But I will say that ep12 shows that Da-hye is just as much of a dumbass as Soo-cheol, so they are evenly matched.

As for grandpa.... Ughhhhh. The least said about him, the better. Poor Beom-ja.
And why did the family listen to the crazy lady's advice to take grandpa through a final tour of the house?
I'm also afraid the writers will not be able to conclude this satisfyingly. How will we get a happily ever after in 4 episodes at this rate? Shouldn't we be tying loose ends up by now? I signed up for a happy ending, and nothing else!

I agree with Goyangi, I don't think they were taking her advice, but that this may be their one and only chance to get into the house. Hyun-woo is a smart cookie. He may be exposing the hidden room, and I'm fairly sure he already knows that the family's whereabouts are being monitored while they're in the house (they can't go into the elevator for an extended time and not come out) - He'll devise a plan to get the funds once he's sure where they are. When Hae-in is stable, the two of them are a force to be reckoned with - smart, fearless, and each other's love to protect.

Well, we have evil girlfriend out of power, we have BaekHong back together (though of uncertain marital status), We have Da-hye back ... one of the many people who has lied to themselves about their own feelings of love for a long time ...
https://www.dramabeans.com/members/CecilieDK/activity/1564413/#acomment-1564908 - and also, an insider to the villain group, ...
We have the whole family caring for Hae-in (which, because it's drama-land, very likely will give her those blood cells that will make a cure possible) and we even have the in-law families getting much closer. So apart from there probably being some horrible trap in that basement, we are maybe not so far from a happy ending. I hope HongBaek won't have to die and be reincarnated/meet in Heaven to be able to be together. I hope it will be that blood cell thing.
If there's an explanation why Hae-in's mum is such a horrible person, other than having lost her son, that would be nice to know before the curtain falls, too. And I really want to know why Ms. Girlfriend went for that family. I hope the explanation will involve Grandpa letting her down in a "you are not as real a person as I am (because money) and your pregnancy is insignificant" way, and that it made her swear to get revenge, and money, and to not consider him and his family real persons.
But maybe she was just always a psycho killer.

Eun-seong is written perhaps a wee bit better than his mother who is still largely shrouded in mystery as to her motives. However, her evil villain look is on full display. I'm almost certain Hae-in's grandmother, brother and unborn baby's deaths could also be traced back to her.

They do need to wrap these threads sooner than later to let us enjoy some uninterrupted OTP moments.

Wow.

I admit to ugly crying during the first part of ep 11. Each episode has so many emotionally impactful moments, and new intriguing information. I am thoroughly caught up in this drama.

Long post in three parts - Questions, what I Loved, and Random thoughts, in no particular order:

Questions

Still curious about the boating accident. What is the timeline and did it have to do with snake gf's vendetta? Was the objective to kill the oldest son? Likely connected somehow. Would be wild if Hae In's outcast uncle had a hand in it. Though I'm guessing gf manipulated them, another first born son out of the way.

Could a transfusion help increase Hae In's white blood count? I am certain Hyun Woo would donate.

Why is our couple still sleeping separately?

How terrifying for Hae In to not be able to trust her own perceptions. I wonder could they choose a code word, gesture, or touch that means it's him? Could she remember it?

The previews show first snow which is months away. Does Hae In recover? Is the Eun Snake clip them letting him think she's still sick so they can manipulate him? Looking forward to the romantic parts they teased!

Loved

The two families sharing a meal at the restaurant. What a lovely scene! Hae In looking at everyone like she's dreaming, the moms amiably discussing how to help her, Hyun Woo and Soo Cheol feeding her. The Hongs needed a wake up call for what is truly important. Wish it was a different number calling though.

Dinner at Hyun Woo's place. Snuggles on the sofa. COMMUNICATION!!

Hyun Woo kneeling in front of Hae In so curious observers got a good view of him looking lovingly at her.

The sunset ring scene, how sweet and sad in equal measure. Hyun Woo did not give up, he insisted on an answer. And she was honest with him. Progress!

Ring testing for trend research.

The reveal that Hyun Woo was the one who saved Hae In in the water, not her brother. How much more guilt will Hong mom need to handle?

Dad's efforts to smile for his daughter in the hospital. His acting here, his shaky facial expressions as he tried to be upbeat for her, I really felt for him. Hopefully he's finally growing a backbone and trying to be a leader for his family.

Hong mom finally realizing the time she has lost with her daughter and how poorly she has treated her. And her immediate turn around.

The montage of moments as each person learned of Hae In's diagnosis, what a great way to depict this.

Hyun Woo once again so smart, convincing the gangster not to kill him. I had the same idea and he did exactly what I'd hoped.

Secretary Na's loyalty and matter of fact approach. Return before I've paid for this expensive dress!

Beom Ja's blossoming romance. I hope it's reciprocated, I wish for her an HEA ending. Loved his idiom: even those who seem carefree might carry heavy stones in their pockets.

Grandfather finally doing something selfless for his family. A redeeming end for him.

Hae In and her recorder pen. Though I did worry that it would be noticed by the snakes sitting out like that with her initials on it.

Wrong title, this show is really Kim Soo Hyun as King of Tears. Mostly mine. That man's emotional acting is stellar. Also, Korean compound words are fun, tears = eye water.

I wish Netflix would translate song lyrics like Viki. The music is wonderful.

The Hongs, or some of them, need to apologize to Hyun Woo for accusing him of bugging their home, and not trusting his legal counsel, among other wrongs.

I'm glad Hong dad acknowledged the burden Hyun Woo has been carrying.

I knew right away who approached Hae In with the umbrella because of the creepy shadow he cast on her. He is a shadow for her, blocking out the light and trying to kill her happiness. She grabbed a coat sleeve, but Hyun Woo had placed his around her shoulders. And I noticed Hyun Woo kept looking out the car window in the wrong direction if he was driving the car Hae In was in. And as @unit noted, his mannerisms were not Hyun Woo's. But it still made me question what was happening. The show tries to keep us as confused as Hae In must feel. Scary how long this hallucination lasted.

Interesting that dad's comment about American ways (HI and HW staying together in Seoul) was translated as "liberal". Wish more Americans were.

Da Hye had better share some info to help the good guys. What is on her ex's thumb drive?

Eun Snake risked Hae In's life in that car chase, the life of the woman he claims to love, turning in front of that truck. And how bizarre to plan a romantic dinner, all smug smiles, for someone who has made it perfectly clear she does not care for him, and while believing he'd just murdered the man she does love. Plus lying about rescuing her.

Fitting that gf chose a necktie for grandfather with a pattern of chains on it.

Eun Snake's go-to problem solution is to kill anyone who annoys him. Kill the dog, kill Hyun Woo, kill Soo Cheol. Apparently inherited.

I do hope the snake family did not already find the hidden cash. They need to be done and gone so we can focus on Hae In's recovery and our OTP rebuilding their relationship.

Two faced Grace could have easily lied about the location of the money. I do not want redemption for her or the snakes.

They are heavily promoting Germany. The cancer clinic, travel for honeymoon and treatment, and Hyun Woo's cool little sports car is a Mercedes.

Zip along week so we can get to eps 13-14!

oh I'm with you on no redemption for Grace, she needs jail and the entire Hong household staff needs firing since they're all part of the snakes' next - I was so creeped out to see Hae-in's chef helping Eun-slap-his-face-already in his twisted attempt to woo her.

re: the misdirection at the end of episode 11, the shadow had me certain it was him but then it turned out to be "Hyun-woo", only for her grabbing his coat sleeve to make me wonder again (wasn't sure it was a coat sleeve and not just his jacket), it wasn't until he stopped her from calling the police that I knew for certain it wasn't him - but the reveal via the silhouette of Hyun-woo+ reflection in the glass was still beautifully done. Very fitting for the vampire that he is.

that was my other 'something is off' tell - actual Baek Hyun-woo would NEVER have been so calm putting Hae-in's life at risk like that.

It's worth nothing that things turned dangerous only because Eun-sleaze was the one who turned it into a car chase after kidnapping Hae-in.

Oooh I love your analogy of Eunhding being a shadow for Hae-in, blocking all her light. Thays such an apt description

Its supposedly Queen (Hae-in) of Tears (Hyun-woo) - according to the production team. So Hyun-woo is the tears indeed. Poor guy probably had to drink up a small lake with the amount of water his eyes shed throughout last year's shoot lol.

Grace is such a snake. Definition of snake, to the point where she changes sides literally on whim i feel. I am questioning why Hyun-woo would tell her where he thinks the funds are at. Does he have a plan? Did he slip? Why would he trust her!? He is way too smart to fall for the trap, so I do think he's set a trap for her instead.

Personally, I find the corporate stuff really interesting lol. Got zero issues with it, but i think it will wrap up ep 13, or potentially 14. The last week will likely focus on our main couple.

I agree, KSH's portrayal as Eun-villain really gave me goosebumps even during that short moment!
He really showcased his masterful acting in that scene with the cold mannerism, blank expression, and emotionless speech.
I could tell right away that the person holding the umbrella is not Hyun Woo, but Eun-villain.

Somehow it was Dad's reaction that made me cry the most. Love his scene with Hyun-woo's dad where they talk about how he thinks he failed his family, and Hyun-woo's dad just says you'll always be important no matter what. It was such a simple but impactful scene. Lots of character development for everyone this week.

Blood transfusions are typically used to treat for RBC disorders. However, there are WBC treatments. It depends on the cause of the low WBC count and the specific WBC cells. She doesn’t have any blood cancers/disorders, nor any infections. Did they show her getting extensive chemotherapy? Often, a treatment pause is enough to get them back up. There are also several drugs—and they work in a jiffy, at least the ones for neutropenia.

But I don’t think they really thought this thru. And also, eating meat seems to be the answer to everything in dramaland. Cue more BBQ scenes. 😂

The illness plot line is not working out for me. Given the low count of WBC and spread of the tumor, shouldn't Hae In be prone to more infections? Also, shouldn't she be in hospital receiving chemotherapy?
At one point Hae In tells the doctor that the tumor has not spread...so maybe it will miraculously clear up?

1

Considering how love normally cures everything in kdrama-land, if ever that cure worked, it should here.
I sincerely hope so. Her continuing hallucinations scare me, though.

3

That was in Midnight Studio, too!

I personally think Hae-in's anemia will improve and she'll get to do that treatment in Germany, and it'll work. I don't think she'll spontaneously go into remission.

4

Chemo therapy is not the recommended treatment for all kinds of cancer.
For at least one kind of cancer near the centre of the brain, radiation therapy is the norm, while in rare special circumstances (NF1, look it up if you want to, or I recommend just taking my word for it) chemo therapy can be effective and less deadly.
Both kinds of treatment have severe side effects, so if doctors do not see them improving the chances of survival, or prolonging life significantly, they will probably not recommend them.
Anyway, this is fairy tale land. Otherwise, I would not be able to watch this.

Side effects are awful so that makes sense. I'm familiar with NF but not the treatment. I've had students with tumors on the optic nerves causing vision loss.

2

You surprised me there! Most people don't know NF at all, for obvious reasons (rare) and from with NF, the optic nerve tumours are rare, though much more frequent than for other people. And you have had studentS, plural.
Well, some of those get timours in the brain, too. To say "easy come, easy go" is taking it far too lightly, but those tumours arise because the body lacks defense against them, and so are statistically more often beaten with less treatment than people who get the tumours after their well-functioning defence system has tried and failed to beat them.
So while radiation is ... *very* dangerous for NF1 patients, chemo, though insufficient in most cases for other people, may save the NF1 patient.
That is what I know about that. And it is old knowledge, maybe (hopefully) they know more every year.

2

not timours, obviously I meant tumours

1

When I say plural students it's only 2 in all my years as a teacher for students with visual impairmens. So yes, rare, but I've seen a lot of rare conditions, some much more unusual than NF. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I have no idea. I asked myself the same.

"How terrifying for Hae In to not be able to trust her own perceptions. I wonder could they choose a code word, gesture, or touch that means it's him? Could she remember it?" Yes!! I also thought of that while watching the sunset scene, and I really hope we get it. They need to start creating new ways to communicate in those kind of situations.

The panic room is empty. Eun-sung found the secret slush fund first. When the silhouette approached a crouching, dozing Hae-in, I had assumed it was Eun-sung, then even though it was revealed to be Hyun-woo, I still had Eun-sung in the back of my mind, so the plot twist wasn't as shocking to me. Though the editing ought to have obscured their cars better. Eun-sung is so whipped for Hae-in that at least he'd never hurt her even if he kidnaps her. I'm sure everyone will disagree (since you all call him names), but I thought it was cute at how excitedly he picked out dinnerware for their meal and when she asked to have time alone with Grandpa, he readily agreed and stood guard outside the door.

So Da-hye's finance director "oppa" really is her baby daddy. While I don't feel sorry for either of them, Da-hye being in an abusive relationship and Eun-sung having abusive adoptive parents is such the life of an orphan. I wish Da-hye were as ruthless as Moh Seul-hee and had drugged his wine like Grandpa's tea instead of only slipping him sleeping pills.

I was relieved when Hae-in told Hyun-woo the truth about not being able to recognize him lest she fall back into the cycle of lying to her husband. Unless Grandpa recorded a whole new will on Hae-in's pen recorder before his suicide, Moh Seul-hee should still be getting an inheritance.

Conan and Yang-gi, my two favorite characters, saved the day today by finding Young-song's mother with his drone and getting the mansion's floor plan from the designer's son. This show will never make me forgive Hae-in's mother.

You would call someone a sperm donor if the woman wanted a child, but not a man. I don't think that was her goal initially.
He is what is mostly referred to, if the woman manages to get away, as "a mistake".

Hae-In's mother has a lot to be forgiven for, she always attacked other people like Hyun-Woo because he didn't tell her Hae-In's condition. But she knows why, she never was a good mother to her, it's on her not Hyun-Woo. The father and brother are more realistic now and realized everything Hyun-Woo did for their family.

Grandpa's death was sad but he took repsonsability for his past decisions and at least, it was his own decision.

I'm happy to see Hae-In and Hyun-Woo being more sincere and honest with each other. They're so cute together! I love their scenes.

For the villains, they're all alone... Nobody will fight or care for them like Hae-In's members do.

Required fields are marked *

yeah it's not surprising to me that her first reaction on finding out about Hae-in's condition is to find the next target to lash out at, and because now that can't be Hae-in, it's Hyun-woo. Thank goodness for Dad finally developing a spine and telling her to stop it, and her finally going away and developing some self-awareness of what a shitty mother she's been as she reflects.

Far worse to Hae-in, yes, but she's also done Soo-cheol no favours by raising him to be a coddled manchild pitted against his sister - something even he seems to realise, given that he was trying to raise his son to be a bit more independent and the scene in Hae-in's hospital room where he rips up the 'talisman' while sobbing on Hyun-woo's shoulder.

(honestly, between Hae-in's mother and brother, they - and mostly she - did half the work of serving the family up on a platter by being complacent, snobbish and just plain stupid - oh yeah, and add gullible to that. Grandpa did the other half by blindly trusting Mistress Snake and not realising how deep into the household she'd got her claws)

2

Required fields are marked *

Severely traumatized is not an excuse to blame her daughter. It simply isn't.
"Don't expect me to be reasonable" is something you can say if you cannot be nice to a grown up involved in an accident with your child, or at least if you know that the child you are blaming was actually being uncareful in a way that caused your child to die. But apart from just being happy for the one being saved, if ever you had to blame one, it would be the older, more responsible child. Not the little sister.
And I know of parents that lose a child and can't really be there for the living, but the disgust and hatred she shows towards her own child ... never considering that if this was traumatizing to her, how would it be for Hae-in, who was actually there on the boat? ... it is so disgusting. And at the very least, she should be able to see that her feelings are sick and go to a therapist. At the very, very least she could stay away from that poor child she was blaming, instead of using every opportunity she had to harass her.

2

Required fields are marked *

yep totally with you. I would get it if she's withdrawn or inattentive from Hae-in because Hae-in reminds her of the tragedy. But in so many scenes she made Hae-in to be a villain, and it's basically her who brainwashed Soocheol to think of Hae-in as this evil force obstructing him. Grace and the fake shaman are of course at blame too, but the ultimate responsibility is still she herself as the mother.

2

@unit Thanks for another good recap. Eun being scared of both Hyun Woo's punch and his mom's murder spree made me so happy. I just don't feel any pity for him. Him blatantly lying to Hae In about saving her from drowning caught me more by surprise than Hae In confessing to Hyun Woo that she would marry him N-times.

Sung Hoon can do a good job of being evil but Lee Mi Sook challenges everyone with her superior and nuanced acting skills. One slight squint or smirk and you would be sqeauking like a rat under her feet. Her final confrontation with the granpa gave real chills.

I felt a slight pity for the chairman and I owe that to Beom Ja. Her heartfelt conversation with the village guy made me teary eyed. This drama is really going all guns in with the crying part.

This week felt a bit long because of the chaebol stuff but I liked all the emotional beats, especially between Hae In and Hyun Woo. As unrealistic as the dramatics are with the memory loss, they made me sob for Hae In. Ooof!! Kim Ji Won nailed the confused expression while getting lost at her old mansion. Jaebal, I need this queen to get her happy ending 😭😭😭

rapid-fire notes before I come back to drop more:

- SHE TOLD HIM SHE LOVES HIM!!! I mean, if publicly telling Eun-screw-yourself to, well, screw himself for threatening him wasn't enough of a declaration of love, she really woke right up and said it in straightforward, impossible-to-interpret-any-other-way Korean (and from the day they met at that). And she knows he still loves her too, as a fact of the present day, not the past - sadly, that's not enough to solve the problem of her still-imminent death and her losing her grip on reality as she goes.
- I get why she turned down the divorce cancellation ring (@Kathryn51 you were right all along and the divorce isn't yet final!) but both scenes involving it - the proposal and the just-trying-it-in-for-research - scenes are so touching and comically adorable respectively, that I even forgive the Bulgari PPL now becoming more in-your-face (bring back the OG wedding rings please!!). Hyun-woo's reaction to seeing that Hae-in had actually worn it, her rapid walk back to pop it off her finger and back into the box and then him leaving it with her for "more research on jewellery trends"...🤣

- Netflix occasionally plays fast and loose with the English subtitles - a few weeks ago, @Aigoo-ka-choo and I had a discussion on Hae-in and Eun-snake's first conversation in episode 2 having a subtitle on Hae-in's dialogue saying they "broke up on good terms" when that's not the line spoken by Kim Ji-won at all. Episode 11 confirms my suspicions - on being confronted by Hae-in about his fake white-knighting in their university days, Eun-scary says (in classic stalker style) "you should have liked me before I did those things!", "I only did it because I couldn't get close to you" and "you didn't see me" (I presume he means as a romantic prospect) - all pointing very firmly in the direction of Hong Hae-in Wasn't Having Any Of It, not now and not then either. The subtitle saying they "broke up" now looks like a pretty major piece of misinformation if it created a former romantic relationship where there was none.

- so I'm not the only one who wondered what was up with "Hyun-woo" at the end of episode 11 (after initially believing the approaching figure with the umbrella was Eun-stalker, only to be relieved at first that we were seemingly wrong) - brilliantly played and directed with the growing sense of something just being off and keeping the car chase shots quick so we didn't figure out Hae-in wasn't in Hyun-woo's car, culminating in Eun-snake wearing Hyun-woo's face to tell her not to call the police (no way in hell would Baek Hyun-woo ever stop her). Mega kudos to Kim Soo-hyun there.

This language business is interesting isn't it :) It sure seems as if that was a bit of mistranslation back in Ep 2 (that Hae-in and Eun-stalker 'broke up') and should have been more along the lines of them being 'estranged' or 'falling out' or something more general.....

We are peeling away more layers of the backstory onion but I still want more details! What exactly were the ways Eun-snake was getting her into the trouble he then offered to get her out of?? Will that have any bearing on what he tries to do now?

GAH -this waiting a week for Eps malarkey sucks 😒

Required fields are marked *

That mistranslation is flat-out egregious, and frankly there's no excuse for it - if the Korean dialogue was ambiguous, they should have reflected that in the English subtitle translation too instead of creating a whole relationship between them that (as is becoming clear now) never existed.

Every actual implication that there was ever a relationship between Eun-sociopath and Hae-in, came from the snake himself and not from her, there was no need for the subtitle translation to effectively put words in her mouth there.

It's worse because there's an entire international audience that doesn't speak Korean and - understandably - treats official subtitles as the definitive interpretation of events and dialogue onscreen, and while minor hiccups are expected in translation, I'll just say - shame on Netflix if any of their guidelines demanded this, Viki would never.

- BaekHong's dinner!!!! A whole rollercoaster of feelings, from 'the baby's due date is his passcode too' to 'lol so Baek Hyun-woo isn't actually perfect and leaves clothes on the floor' to him cooking dinner for her and her causing him to choke by having a flare-up of 'so, after I'm dead, are you going to live here with some other woman??' (please no, don't let her die! Even though her occasional dark humour when talking about her impending death is one of my favourite parts of her characterisation) to the morning cuddle that I think put most of Beanieland in a swoon from which we may or may not yet have recovered.

I thought it also made - as the directors intended - a fantastic contrast to Hae-in's hostage dinner at Queensville, at which she remains completely unimpressed by the fancy wining and dining (she's been rich from birth and this is HER HOUSE, Eun-stupid, nothing she hasn't seen before), unmoved on being presented with evidence of a childhood connection*, unsympathetic to the "poor stalker me" narrative and basically telling him that he's put her off her food (particularly obvious when she'd said earlier to "Hyun-woo" that she was hungry). The finishing touch is her refusal to eat, followed by what appears to be malicious compliance - we see her using her cutlery, but the plate on her side of the table after she's left is still full of steak and veg that looks completely uneaten and which Eun-starve proceeds to throw against the wall because she just said Eun-screw-yourself all over again and has 0 qualms about using him to get what she wants - and she should have none!!! Even better when you see her at Hyun-woo's afterward, making an absolute feast of his simple food.

*my least favourite part of this series when it comes to BaekHong (and my least favourite epilogue tbh) but I can forgive the use of this trope since the encounters are brief, neither Hae-in nor Hyun-woo remember each other from then......and, as shown in this episode, Hae-in only puts any stock in any past connections as long as they're tied to Hyun-woo.

Feel free to tell me I did good and you like me.
Then there's hubby, and we know he's not really an ex. Passcode (her little head nod confirmed that she's sure he's the right man). His little flirty, It's uncomfortable because you're not here (caught her off guard, lol). Then he jumped into "I've got my mamma's cooking skills... ready, set, go" mode, when she asked for food. You can tell her compliments made his heart skip. Their interactions are gentle, kind, relaxed and has the warmth of a hot cup of cocoa on a cold day. He feels like home.

- re: subtitling, some choices continued to bother me even in episode 11, to be honest.

For starters, Hae-in's mental speech to Hyun-woo as she's being wheeled into the hospital - a former subtitler for darksmurf on soompi pointed out that what she actually says is "마음과는다른 말들" - which is more like "words that were different from what I felt/the opposite of what I felt" but ends up translated by Netflix as "harsh words" - again, presenting a different impression from what seems to be the intent of the dialogue.
Another instance I noticed was when Hae-in's mother was telling Da-hye to get out of there, the subtitle says "and take that thing with you" meaning the baby - when the actual meaning of "그 에" would be more like..."that child". At least in this drama, the previous subtitles never translated it as referring to a thing, not a person - I get it they want to emphasise that his mother is being harsh on her cheating daughter-in-law, but she wasn't actually calling a baby a 'thing'.

- this week moved slower than usual because of the chaebol stuff, but also ended up quite dark - elder abuse, kidnapping, a shockingly abusive relationship (poor Da-hye, that human poopstain is so vile I would have advocated dipping him in a vat of hydrochloric acid for her own safety, not just drugging him so she and her baby could get away)

I'm so glad you brought up that line about them breaking up on good terms, or whatever it was. It definitely made it seem these two had dated but in the past few episodes it's clear that they never did, so that line was obviously a mistake. I noticed this is one of those dramas that Netflix dubs (although they're a couple of episodes behind) so I might go back to the beginning and see if they changed their translation of that line.

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I hadn't even thought of the dubs! I thought that because this drama was fully produced in advance maybe the subtitlers knew something we didn't/had access to later episodes confirming Hae-in and Eun-snake maybe went on a date or something but recent episodes just seem to confirm that there wasn't even a date or any mutual romantic interest, certainly none on her part anyway.

Required fields are marked *

TBF, when she said "Let's agree to Say we Broke Up On Good Terms" it was to agree on a lie, right after he had reminded her that she had said she never wanted to see him again, and that he shouldn't contact her. Because now, Hae-in wanted to be in his good graces because of those business things.
But the "break up" might have been something meaning more like "became estranged".

2
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

my point is that that subtitle is false info based on a mistranslation - she never says they 'broke up' at all. The Korean dialogue for Hae-in never says it.

What she actually says in ep 2 is (translating literally) "yes, I told you not to contact me again because you were crossing the line too much" followed by "let's just say we had a good relationship" (in this context, the words she used don't imply a romantic relationship, could be friendly acquaintances too - nothing in there about breakups or becoming estranged beyond that, though in episode 11 she refers to 'cutting ties' with him when she found out he was engineering white knight situations to 'save' her from). This is the line Netflix has chosen to translate in the subtitle as "let's just say we broke up on good terms" - @aig00iness and I went into it in some detail complete with Hangul, on the recap of episode 7-8.

@unit 🫘Beansprout Award🌱 for these fun filled recaps. Every week I look forward to reading them and reliving the weekend’s episodes.

I knew it was Eunsung from his arrival it didn’t feel right and his question confirmed it. I genuinely thought she was touching his sleeve because Hyunwoo has something that she would feel like a Buddhist bracelet or a mole, so that would help her always know it was him. In reality I assumed they both wore cologne and usually senses hold memory so that should help her even if they both wear the same one it would smell differently.

Once she knew it was Eunsung to be smart enough to take advantage of the situation was a great move but I worried she would never be able to leave. I worried her grandad would not recognise her.
I was thinking about the lift and whether there was a camera in there so even if they find the money they would be unable to take it out with the security crew.

Grace is really annoying.

Soocheol’s family reunion was so sweet as he became a man when he stood up to his mum but Dahye needs to be helping the family as hopefully she is a better option than Grace. Catching the criminal in her flat should help.

I chose to trust in Park Ji-eun writer-nim and her track record of happy resolutions to “impossible” romances. Same here, also I'm glad I didn't go to med school so whatever *miracle* they want to feed us ( considering Hae In is barely receiving any treatment despite her worsening condition) , I'll buy it lol.

Now back to our couple. The sunset confession scene broke me - specially when Hae In gets into the car & bursts into tears.
Hyun-woo's apartment scenes gave me butterflies. The way Hae In confesses her love for Hyun-woo without batting an eye makes it even more swoony. We need more women like this in kdramaland.

Suspense is killing me guys. Who are we talking about?! 😂

2

I am a relative newb here, and I always assume beanies know far more than I do (so far this has proved to be true!) - apologies for not being clear 🙏

Wookie is Ji Chang-wook💖 - last seen making amazing 'you're adorable' slash 'I can't wait for our skinship to set sail' eyes in Welcome To Samdal-Ri, but many other examples exist.... thanks be to the goddess 😁🤣

2

@aig00iness

LOL no need to apologize! Tbh, my kdrama watching age is showing if the first person who popped up in my head when I read "Wookie" was LDW. Man hasnt done a rom-com in a very long time lol (very unfortunately). JCW somehow just never occured to me.

3

@Mandy - lol I'm also a drama old fart who's thinking back to his My Girl days!

re: romcoms, he did that one with Yoo Inna after Goblin, and I guess the gumiho dramas were pretty funny but I wouldn't really call them...romcoms.

1

@mandy for me, JCW is way more famous for gazing lovely his costars. He can shoot little hearts with those eyes :p

0

@pogo1 LOL i wasnt even thinking that far back - more in Goblin and definitely Touch Your Heart range. Goblin is a bit of a... reach. He's also the only actor to have ever made me secretly ship him with his costars in rl. Yoo Inna and... Gong Yoo lmao. No but jokes aside, I do want him to do something fluffy soon. He's been into a lot of gritty stuff which are great, but sometimes not my cup of tea.

@kurama I have to say, I was so excited with Samdalri. Was gushing about it all over DB, but it was just so disappointing that it rubbed off on my like for JCW. I just wasnt so convinced by the chemistry in that drama. I prob should try another of his romcoms...

1

@mandy sorry to interject, but I am so with you on Samdal-Ri- really disappointing. 😞

The classic JCW show is Healer, but I also loved Suspicious Partner (it's definitely far from perfect but has enough good bits to outweigh the meh moments). No doubt other people can recommend more....

Oh, I thought it was Ji Chang-Wook 😅

Da-hye returning back and Soo-cheol hugging her in tears and announcing Geon-u is his son has to be one of my favorite scenes this week. Business aside, Soo-cheol is a sweet husband and a caring father.
Also, Aunt Beom-ja enjoying the berries her future fourth husband gifted her and not caring about staining her skirt was delightful to watch. I love the slow-burn approach and this relationship has my heart.

Other than our HongBaek couple who I love despite their making me cry several times during these episodes, I also loved Soo-cheol for asserting fatherhood is not only biology. Such a poignant moment. We don’t hear this often enough.

I continue to skim the other sections tho I do appreciate the space they provide between the HongBaek tearjerker. I think grandpa’s slush fund reminded me why I wish this was set outside of chaeboldom. Did any character mention their unease with such a practice? I might have missed it in the ffw’d.

10

Required fields are marked *

I loved Soo-cheol so much for that, being a loving family man was basically his only redeeming point in earlier episodes and to see him step up and reiterate that he's dad regardless of whether Geon-woo is biologically his or not, was major. And an especially strong contrast to the alleged sperm donor, who really needs to be trampled by a herd of buffaloes or something (I would have settled for Da-hye braining him with that gold Buddha but we can't get everything we want)

I have my own discomfort over the 'secret fund', Grandpa could have saved the whole family a lot of trouble if he'd just gone to jail. But who knows what the intention behind specifically using this kind of fund as the deus ex machina is - I assume there is one, vs finding extra ally shareholders or something. I'm willing to wait to see what they're going to do with it or if it's just a 'the ends justify the means' way of getting the company back.

I think they will probably return the slush fund somehow once they get their hands on it. They just need to make sure Eun-sung doesn't get his hands on it and use the slush fund to buy up more stocks. Hyun-woo will make sure it's on the up-and-up.

I'm hoping they will donate it to good causes. I agree with arguably romantic that they mostly just don't want it falling into snakey hands.

Though that whole deal is confusing to me, since Eun Snake supposedly has gobs of money, why they are so desperate to get that money too. Maybe it's only snake mom, or again just to keep it away from the Hongs.

1. Soo Cheol's family is back!!
At first, I thought it's a little weird that the only one angry at Da Hye was mom, since they all were ready to set Hyun Woo on fire when they thought he had betray them. But I guess it's impossible for them to say anything after hearing Soo Cheol cry every night and watching him talk about his wife and baby all the time.

And that's why I can't say anything bad about her either. I'm just glad she's back.

And I really hope that Hyun Woo's noona and her I-can't-think-for-myself squad don't do anything to her. Like, for real, who asks someone else "should I hate or like this complete stranger that has nothing to do with us". Just mind your own business ahjummas. Please.

2. Eun-mommy issues needs to get over himself, asap.

Every single conversation with his mom is the same. "you abandoned me", "you never loved me", "you made me this way".
And my reply never changes: "dude, you're too old to blame your mom for your psycho behavior. "Crappy parenting" isn't excuse enough to keep you out of jail, bro".

And of course, Eun-dumb dumb took Hae In saying that "Hyun Woo is always by her side" too literally. As if Hae In didn't accept him just because the "space" besides her was literally taken by Hyun Woo. 😂 He really thought killing Hyun Woo was the answer? How stupid is he? For real.

3. The whole "in health and in sickness. Till death do us apart" or wtv, is something people don't say at weddings anymore?
Or people don't vibe with that in Korea? I'm genuinely curious.

Everytime Hae In pushes Hyun Woo away, I wonder why he doesn't fight back. She keeps saying that she's getting worse, and that she doesn't wants him to see her like that, but he never says that it's okay for her to show him that side of herself too.

Why doesn't he reminds her that he's supposed to be there in the bad times? Why doesn't he say that he WANTS to be there for her when things gets worse?
Is this about her dignity/pride or something like that? But what's the point of that when she's literally dying. Like, fast.
And he's her family, so I really don't get it. Who the hell is supposed to be by her side when she gets worse? Eun-delulu?

I'm still shocked they're still sleeping in separate beds. They have no time to waste. They need to get back together by yesterday.

I feel like we make progress, and then there's a invisible wall that keeps getting in the way.

4. I really like how this show focus is on the characters and their relationships.

Hae In and her mom. 🥺
I know some beanies think they should've solved their issues ages ago, but I think they just would've never fixed their relationship if it wasn't for this.

I'm pretty sure they would've never talked about it if it wasn't for this sudden twist in their lives.

So I'm really glad mom took the wake up call and apologize. Watching them hugging and crying was really healing.

The dads!!
I love...

The dads!!
I love those two so much. 💚 It's really sweet to see them comfort each other in such an honest way.
This is how all in laws in kdramaland should be, supportive of each other.

I also liked the scene with Hyun Woo's friends! It's so nice to see him have people that take care of him, the same way he helps others.

And I completely adored the barbecue scene with the entire family, and the Hong men cooking for all of them. 🥺💚

And, not gonna lie, I also kinda liked the scene of Eun-delulu and his mom, when she told him that everything she did was for him. It was kinda scary the way she said that she wouldn't hesitate to make Hae In disappear if she hurts her son, but it felt kinda right for this show? I like that her "evil" motivation is her love for Eun Sung. And I like that Eun Sung blames his trashy behavior on his mom's lake of love for him. 😂

Watching this show just feels like a family drama. This is THE weekender I've been waiting for for ages. So yeah, in family dramas the reason for everything is "family". So yeah, I'm even enjoying watching the characters I hate. LOL

And haraboji... I guess he thought that was the only way he could clean his own mess. Aigoo.

I love that the same friends who were too chicken to be Hyun-woo's divorce lawyer because it'd mean going up against Queens by helping him exit his marriage, now don't bat an eye at the absolute certainty that they're going to piss off the entire current management of Queens by helping him beat a fake malpractice charge.

The helpful bonus shot of Hyun-woo and his employment law Avengers jauntily walking past Eun-seethe as he fumes to see his trumped-up charges against Hyun-woo couldn't stick, was nice.

Eun-delulu and psycho mom was an interesting scene - and helpfully contrasted with another less-than-above-board mother in the same episode - Da-hye. Who is - just like Mistress Snake - also a crook and a liar who was seeking to take advantage of a rich man but, unlike Mistress Snake, would never dream of leaving her baby like that, forget leaving him with abusive people.

I also love how Lee Mi-sook has been dropping her previously put-on air of modesty and refinement as Mistress Snake gains more power and starts letting her actual coarser instincts and manner of speaking start to emerge. What an actress (both actress and character).

Like many watchers at the end of episode 11 (where Hae-in mistakes Eun-sung for Hyun-woo) I felt something was "off" while watching it. After the reveal, I rewatched the scene several times, and I love how they gave so many subtle clues about what was really happening.

- Fake Hyun-woo asks "Why are you out here"

- Fake Hyun-woo just stands there and orders Hae-in to "Get up". Real Hyun-woo would have bent down to her and helped her up.

- Hae-in grabs fake Hyun-woo's suit sleeve. Real Hyun-woo was wearing a casual jacket.

- Real Hyun-woo has the beautiful silver Mercedes convertible, and very briefly we see that is the car actually giving chase

- The Mercedes convertible pulls to the right of Hae-in's car, and we see fake Hyun-woo looking ... to his right (at the convertible)

- As mentioned, KSH's mannerisms at emulating Eun-sung

I love the attention to all these details and Easter eggs in this drama!

Tbh, I didnt even notice some of that. Like the suit vs bomber jacket, or the convertible vs regular mercedes or the left vs right hand detail. But literally just the way he said "Hae-in ah" and that blank stare rung so many bells in my head. Nothing was obvious, yet everything was somehow. Still baffling how someone can change characters like that and make it so obvious despite not being obvious at all.

I dont know which of the two PDs handled this scene, but whoever it was, hats off! Balancing the shock reveal with the smidge of clues throughout a scene that encompasses just 2 minutes of the episode. It takes skills and brilliance to pull that off. And KSH, what can I say. He was bone tinglingly creepy there. I want to see him play an Eun-seong one day.

KSH casually and brilliantly pulling off 5 different genres in a rom com LOL. I didnt notice the red convertible top. I was jusr feeling weirded out by something I couldnt identify, but also at the back of my mind, I'm worried about an accident since Eun-sung had asked for for Hyun-woo to be discarded in the previous. But the way "Hyun-woo" asks her if Hae-in if she's fine in that tone and the subsequent music as Hyun-woo comes out of the car. It clicked then for me.

Would also love to see KSH as a villian. Or if thats too much to ask, a true anti-hero would be great. Maybe in a period drama. He would kill it no doubt.

yeah, tracing my own initial reaction it was 'oh, phew, relief it's not Eun-slime' ---> 'why is he being so stiff with her?? did he get bad news about her condition or something?'-----> '??? telling her to hang on?? why is he so doing a car chase with her in the car??' ----> 'ok how many cars are chasing them again?? wait where exactly is Hyun-woo's car??!' ----> "no way in hell would he ever tell Hae-in to wait to call the police! this isn't him she had another episode"
brilliantly acted, it's like the terrifying flip side of the ending of episode 7.

Logged in just to talk about this scene too. How amazing was Kim. Soo. Hyun. The coldness he was radiating didn’t even have any specific lighting or background music support. It was pure acting talent. His voice changed a completely too along with his demeanour. KSH dropped HW and picked up ES like he was changing socks and most of the viewers knew it and still ended up being pikachu faced over the final reveal.

This drama is generally well written, though two plot holes infuriate me.

First one is that Diamond Dripping Mistress was living under a false name for 20 years and nobody batted an eyelash. Isn’t it like illegal to take someone else’s identity?

The second one is after Hae In revealed during a press conference that Eun Sung threatened and blackmailed her and her (ex)husband there were also no consequences. It’s like there are no real consequences for the baddies.

Any followup on Hae-in's public disclosure of blackmail seems to have been sidelined by her collapse and subsequent hospital stay.

Am wondering about Mistress Snake's false identity myself - why couldn't they just get that proven to invalidate her power of attorney? Did she legally change her name or something? I could swear the false identity is even brought up at some point but now I guess it's moot because Grandpa used his suicide to put his shares back into the hands of his family.

We dont know enough about who's identity Seol-hee stole. It could have been someone "willing" to give up their identity, soemone completely non existent or someone dead. I wouldn't consider it a plot hold personally...

As for the blackmail - Hae-in did mention it in the PC, however, she did not release any proof. So claims like that cant really have consequences unless it is pursued. And even if it was pursued, it would still be a long battle because Eun-sung is rich and well all know that even in rl, that can be brushed under the rug. I think we will see consequences for everyone eventually.

"We dont know enough about who's identity Seol-hee stole."

This should have been enough to go to court and challenge that POA. Why the family didn't do that I don't know. Maybe the stolen ID will be used later.

Castaway Diva they made a HUGE deal about stolen identity and the circumstances were far more understandable

I can handwave the lack of making a big deal of Mistress Snake's identity as being a consequence of the Hongs being cut off from their resources/connections and unable to properly investigate beyond Beom-ja's PI +Hyun-woo being under attack through last week and this one, but I do hope they don't just drop that thread, at least explain if she bribed her way into making it legitimate or something.

The only consequences so far was the drop in stock prices and support. But I think the Hongs were dealing with their losses and had only Hyun Woo helping them. Then Hae In's diagnosis, Da Hye, and grandfather, so they haven't had a chance to move forward. Now that they have their financial resources back I'm guessing they will start striking back.

How things have changed! Ten episodes ago the Hong family were the most unlikable chaebols, treating the poor mistress in a cold and hurtful way.

Now I am rooting for them. Under pressure they come together as a family, deeply distressed by Hae-in's diagnosis. Stupid brother Hong Soo-cheol is now the sweetest and most devoted husband and father of a child that is not his own. Papa Hong is a kind, caring family man, Mama Hong is full of remorse, but may have to improve a little more to be really liked. The witch-like eyeliner is gone! Grandpa is making the ultimate sacrifice for his family.

The poor mistress on the other hand looks like a really nasty psycho. Even Eun-seong is shocked to find out how evil his mother is - and this from a man who is not above ordering an assassination.

Please, drama, keep the twists and surprises coming!

I do find it rather diabolically funny and hypocritical that Eun-seong acted shocked over his bio mother having his abusers killed right after he ordered a failed assassination attempt on someone whose worst offence is being the man loved by the woman he (ES) wants.

Pot, meet kettle/ apple doesn't fall far from the tree and all that.

LOL so true. Tho i feel Eun-sung was sort of half shocked over the fact that his mother cared at all, instead of the fact that she is murderous. Then what shocked him further was her willingness to off Hae-in "for him". I think that disgusted him which is rather hilarious considering, like you said, he was willing to off Hyun-woo for himself too.

I, too, have been shocked (although I shouldn't have been, considering how much I like this writer) that I've warmed up to characters who left me cold at the beginning. This is especially true of Hae-in's mom. I still have no pity for grandpa, though--he cheated on his wife and mercilessly rejected his family in favor of his mistress. But maybe I'll feel differently by the end.

Just gonna leave this here:

"White blood cell count is increased in pregnancy with the lower limit of the reference range being typically 6,000/cumm. Leucocytosis, occurring during pregnancy is due to the physiologic stress induced by the pregnant state. Neutrophils are the major type of leucocytes on differential counts."

I love that Hae In lost her appetite with Eun bastard despite the lavish dinner setting. But the moment she was alone with her husband, and they are both settled in his apartment, she brought up how famished she was. She loved her husband's cooking and complimented him for it. This two just need their moment. I trust that writernim has a happy ending for this two.
The sunset setting for his cancel divorce proposal is lovely. That ring was beautiful! Hae In admire it some more.
There area lot more scenes I love with this two but those are my faves.

It's an especially good bit of petty/spiteful coming from Hae-in because she'd actually said earlier (when she thought he was Hyun-woo) that she was hungry.

but when you're an Eun-stalker, you get 0 sympathy for having the object of your obsession effectively declare that she prefers her brain tumour to you or that the sight of you causes her to lose her appetite. The cherry on top is Eun-screw-yourself watching her on the security camera being led away by the husband he just tried to murder and being able to do nothing about it but seethe.

The divorce cancelling proposal really was lovely and I was so glad she told him the truth about her cognitive decline, but I wasn't prepared for it to turn so sad! It's even worse because you know she wanted to say yes, these two love each other and know it but that isn't their problem.

I love her more when she is petty and spiteful towards Eun-delusional. He should just let her go and turn his own mother in for fraud and illegal confinement among other crimes committed.

I like this description 😁 Seriously, I find Eun-sorry ass a very pathetic villain...he needs HaeIn to live becoz without her, he probably woudn't know what to do with himself anymore.

I'm sorry to be the continued hater but for some reason I'm still watching this show on max speed, despite not finding myself invested in the story. The main plot at the moment is a chaebol family trying to get the illegal slush fund back from the *other* bad people who stole it. Am I supposed to be rooting for this? This could be a fun caper, but it feels more like a drag to me.

I did like the first 30 minutes of Ep 11, which focused on the human stakes of the story. I think the romance in CLOY gets you through all the crazy plot machinations. But it's not written strongly enough for me, despite the leads doing great work.

Still not on board with Hae in's mother's redemption either 🫣. She made it all about her!

That has been my dilemma with these two episodes. More so that they have really no problem with using that illegal money to buy back the stocks. And just let's say that they will be able, how are they going to prove to the authorities where that whole amount of cash came from? Are they going o use another financial engineering scheme? Not exposing the fraud of changing the identity of the girlfriend sooner and continuing with the charade I will allow because of the need to stretch the story but to glorify financial fraud of the rich I will not.

Hae-in's mother is the true villain in this drama, not Ms. Girlfriend, so I can't root for the Hongs. And Hyun-woo is looking for an illegal slush fund as a lawyer, mind you. The family doesn't deserve any redemption.

I was SO mad at her for shouting at Da Hye when she came back and apologised. To me, her *exact* experience with her daughter was misreading situations and coming to quick judgements, as we saw in her flashbacks in ep 11.

I'd think that someone who just had the revelation that they had been totally wrong about a person might (1) be a bit more inquisitive about why she was back and (2) decide not to be the immediate moral authority and shout, especially when the other family members were willing to hear her out.

the leopard doesn't change its spots so quickly, also I think the whole cheating/scamming/lying all along part needed SOME telling-off especially since Soo-cheol clearly wasn't about to be the one to do it (and even if I do believe Da-hye deserves forgiveness in exchange for her remorse) and did the right thing by standing up for her in response.

Oh totally - I agree Da hye shouldn't necessarily be welcomed back no questions asked & with no suspicion. I was just annoyed the mother decided to be the one to take that role.

I was too scratching my head on this. Emotionally, I like this caper type of thing going on here, but then when Hyun-woo was describing the whole "paper company" scheme involving 3 countries and other dirty financial institutions, I was thinking, "well that's a whole putin-like level of scheme going on there on part of Hong grandpa!"

@kodra The money is already laundered, so the family can say they got a hold of a rare "artwork" to sell and get the money to buyback the stocks. Still, I agree, that would raise a lot of questions.

this is what gets me with this drama. I dont feel bad for any of these rich people. they acting as if the slush fund is a good thing to fight for lol I would love if the hing family accepted their loss and started a new life on the countryside or somewhere else. let the villains find the slush fund and go to prison for it. but the drama really wants me to root for these people.

Same here. I generally enjoy this writer's works, she isn't subtle but she sure is fun. I've been looking forward to this drama ever since it was announced, but now that it's here I'm not feeling it.

For me, the main issue is that the OTP don't feel authentic. Their characters have not been fully fleshed out, and it's a shame because these actors can play wonderfully layered characters. Baek Hyunwoo is a bit too perfect, Hae-in is written like an ice princess with a heart of gold (and their comedic moments feel over the top).

My favourite moment this episode was the Seokchol/Dahye reunion. It's a wonderful redemption/forgiveness arc.

Park Ji-eun is obviously experimenting a new format in QoT by NOT telling the love story chronologically, with divorce as the starting point. I did wonder if that would work at all as audience generally like watching the whole sequence from infatuation to falling in love.

It took me a few episodes to get into the reversed rhythm - but I got the benefit of binge-watching Ep 1-10 in one go. That way, the whole drama looks smooth, in sync and very enjoyable. However, I could picture the frustration of watching live with only two episodes each week to crisscross between present and tidbits of the past. (I could potentially stop after a few episodes if watching live.)

That makes sense. Park Ji-eun's speciality is writing roms-coms, so although the plot is a couple facing divorce, she's not as interested in teasing out the personality conflict and tensions in a marriage. Instead the focus remains on how Hyun-woo and Hae-in fell in love, rather than how they fell out of love. Tonally, the drama remains very much a rom-com, which for me is jarring given the subject matter of divorce and death.

I would have been much more interested in an exploration of their marriage, personalities and divorce (I felt that was how the drama was promoted, so I was expecting "World of the Married" vibes), but I guess "Queen of Tears" it is still a rom-com masquerading as a drama.

This makes me convinced that the writer will create a magical cure for Hae-in so the OTP can live happily ever after.

This has to be my favorite moment too. I loved their progression as a couple more than anything. In fact, I wish the author would explore more of their life journey.
