[Drama Chat] PPL round-up: Chocolate and caffeine

My love-hate relationship with PPL gets stronger the longer I reside in dramaland, and it’s offered me some of my most exaggerated eye-rolls, and my best laughs. This year alone, I think we’ve seen more caffeinated-chocolate bar Kopiko ads than we have seen dramas with bad husbands (and that’s saying something, since dramaland doesn’t like husbands right now).

What are some recent PPL moments or products that have stood out to you so far this year? What made you cringe? What made you grab your phone and Google?

Let’s chat about the best and worst PPL moments so far in 2024!

The best for now are the Bulgari rings in Queen of Tears!

The worst... I don't remember having TKEM's moments in 2024 dramas.

BEST: I agree the QOT wedding rings are hands down the winners of this category because they don't come across as PPL at all - no one thinks of wedding rings as 'products' because they're universally understood symbols of a marriage/relationship and that's the genius of it. We're too busy crying or swooning over wedding ring shots to realise they're PPL in the first place 😂 (and I admit it had me looking up the prices of Bulgari sings too lol)

close second place: the Roger Vivier crystal-buckled sneakers 'bought on sale at half price' with no brand name shown anywhere onscreen but still cute shoes and well used to make a point about the relationship onscreen.

for best obvious PPL, I'm going to have to give it to Queen of Tears' Mistress Snake and her Bulgari Serpenti necklace complete with snake's head 😂

WORST of all time: nothing can top Signal having someone serve a guest a Subway sandwich - paper, plastic tray and all - IN A PRIVATE HOUSE lol. Like they had a Subway franchise in their kitchen. TKEM comes close but lol.

Most obvious recent-ish PPL: it's almost a year old but I still lol @ King The Land and the Miu Miu bag clutched firmly in our heroine's hand as she trips and falls into her hero's arms. And of course the bag is helpfully white, for maximum contrast and product-show-off potential against her dark coat, clutched tight even as she's gazing soulfully into his eyes (when was the last time anyone ever saw a woman in real life owning a white handbag? Even an evening bag? lol)

That serpent necklace is capable of swiping my card without me thinking once. An involuntary reflex swipe.

I love those rings! Especially the latest one Hae In admired because she want to keep up with the trends! 😉😊

TBH despite the in-your-face plug I quite liked the Tiffany couple bracelets in Destined With You.
The QoT Bvlgari rings are of course very well woven into the storyline.

They made a great use of these bracelets for the story. And there is no hotter scene with a PPL than this drama :p

In 2024, my votes are...

Most Adorable PPL: Dol Swe the robot vacuum cleaner in The Story of Park's Marriage Contract

Most Surprising Need for PPL: Korean-grown bell peppers in The Story of Park's Marriage Contract

Most Effective PPL: Whatever Jang Dong-yoon was selling as Kim Baek-du in Like Flowers in Sand

Most Unneccessary PPL: Jinro Chamisul soju

Guilty-Google-Secret PPL: The clear bottled soju that's been popping up recently, wondering what was up with that. In the US anyway, it's zero sugar soju. I suppose that's good to know if you want to know whether or not the character in question is watching their carbs while drinking themselves under the table.

And, finally, on a related note...

Most Criminal PPL: The bonafide diet drink PPL associated with jokey Size ZERO Christian-themed diet book in My Demon. Outrageous.

Zero sugar bottle of soju has about 300-400 calories and regular bottle of soju has about 400-500 calories. Soju contains so much sugar (whether “zero” or not), that I’m half-wondering if k-drama characters should be more worried about type 2 diabetes than another serial killer lurking around the corner. In fact, a bottle of soju has waaaay more sugar than the same amount of (unflavored) wine, beer or makgeoilli. There truly must be some genetic adaptation in East Asian countries where sake/soju is regularly consumed because my weak-ass white liver would have kiltered off a long time ago.

I think maybe one must “grow up” with soju to like it. I drove to a Korean neighborhood to buy a bottle of soju to taste it, but I disliked it. Sad that bc it is much cheaper than my much loved Japanese and Irish whiskeys.

I forget/ignore PPLs the second after I watch them, but "Whatever Jang Dong-yoon was selling as Kim Baek-du in Like Flowers in Sand" was 100% effective on me. I'M BUYING.

I haven't watched Park's Marriage Contract, but I loved the adorable PPL robot vacuum cleaner in Are You Human? that became a pal of the android version of Seo Kang-Joon's character.

Tao Kae Noi Big Roll Grilled Seaweed from Wedding Impossible. It was fine when Ji-han grabbed one off the craft services table on Ah-jung's film set, but it made no sense when Chae-won and Ah-jung whipped out a box of them as drinking snacks.

I recently watched Taxi Driver for the first time. And that energy drink must be really amazing. Honestly, that was just weird how and how many times it got dialogue.

Hanam Pig in Queen of Tears ep 11. It was weird that the two families suddenly went to a restaurant in the midst of all things.

3

Required fields are marked *

maybe this is just because I don't know Hanam Pig but in-story I can see the rationale behind wanting to do a big family meal out to celebrate good news.... one that Hyun-woo's mother doesn't have to cook (because god knows she does enough, cooking for ten people every day).

Also it's at least a barbeque restaurant which is a believable place for a celebratory occasion, not Subway or something.

Yeah, it worked for the story for me. I don't know Hanam Pig so it completely slid by me as PPL, except that I vaguely thought it was a made up brand or that they must have paid for the brand to be visible in-shot

I don't think I'll ever get tired of chocolate or caffeinated ads in general. Just watching Would You Like A Cup of Coffee sent me on a coffee drinking trip for a period of 4 months.

PPL moments that stood out this year? I don't think they exist. But one did stand out. I don't know if that dragon necklace Hae-in wore is for PPL, but it made a lasting impression. I'm guessing it is a luxury targeted at a specific set of people.

What made me cringe? None. PPL is the last thing I notice in kdramas. But there are PPLs that make me cringe because it is done right in my face: health packs. The package bag, the placing of the pack itself and when taking it are done literally in my face. And there's this uneasy talk that's clearly having no place in the ongoing conversation. I'm guessing some writers are incapable of writing PPLs into their scripts and make it a continuous sequence. I believe even the PPL brand we do not like the most will not make one cringe if it is well introduced and bided goodbye.

What made me grab my phone and Google?
The culprit is Subway. I was a few months old when I finally knew the meaning of the Subway PPL complaints beanies threw here and there. I always thought they were complaining about subway, as in train stations being advertised to citizens to board. And I was wondering why that would be a problem. So imagine my learning moment when I found out Subway was about food and drinks PPL. I then began thinking about the dramas that beanies complained about Subway ppl and how I completely misunderstood their cries.
Now, I notice a subway PPL immediately I see one. The latest I've seen is Queen of Tears episode 11: Baek Hyun-woo and his trio.

- Those giant grapes are scary...

- I'm very happy to see that Subways is back in business! XD I miss Maxim coffee and red ginseng :P And just hate Topiko... seriously, enough!

- And I always laugh when FL receive those tiffany boxes and they go "cute!". Seriously girl, it's a Tiffany, you can do better! XD

Kopiko 😬 with the first suck and the person makes a comment about instantly feeling rejuvenated.

Coffee sweets closely followed by chocolate with a coffee centre comes at the top of the list of products that should NEVER have been thought about let alone made it to production🤢

I think Kopiko is delicious om nom nom it’s funny to me because my coworker used to give them out to us exactly like the PPL in dramas shows lmaoooo

Kopiko instant coffee, however, is absolutely disgusting and every time I forced myself to drink it (cutting it with Cafe Bustelo—which I also hate but less so) because I will not waste food or drink I thought about how the only reason I bought it was because I entered an overpriced local Filipino corner store and am too much of a people-pleaser to enter a small mom and pop business and not buy something… and I cried

This is coming from a person who wrote an ode to Maxim Gold

…don’t buy Kopiko instant coffee

Maybe they discovered by accident that coffee flavoured candy was the better way to sell their coffee and Kopiko candy became a thing.

Kopiko candy always come in handy when I drive for a long day trip but I dont want to drink coffee or energy drinks to save time from visiting the toilet but you are so right about Kopiko instant coffees (here, Kopiko instant coffee has many varieties since the brand is from our neighbouring country) they are cheaper than Nescafe or Essenso but tastes weird and TOO sweet.

I must confess that when I was an early watcher of Kdrama, I went to a Korean supermarket and was so excited to find Kopiko that I bought a package. But only once.

This coffee candy has been around for decades but I'm surprised to see it quite popular as ppl in Kdrama recently. I guess the company decided to produce instant coffee version after the candy goes internationally in South Korea.

I giggle at the grapes every time. No one has found an organic way to insert them into a scene yet.

I really like that Roger Vivier white embellished shoes that Hyun Woo gifter Hae In in Queen of Tears. The Bulgari rings are also great.

Not a fan of the Kopiko candies. I have tried those and it does not replace an actual cup of coffee.

I think I've grown desensitized to PPLs, my mind just laughs at how prominent they are (for those dramas who don't do a good job at keeping it lowkey/blending it into the script) these days.

I think the best PPL is the return of Subway, frequently seen in Queen Of Tears. The amount of times they've had it has me wondering how they arent sick and tired of it already.

And also the way they make KSH take a ma-hou-sive bite of the sandwich like he's just finished a 50km cycle ride and is starving. No more waving it around and taking a nibble. Hilarious.

And the award for -
Most Jarring PPL The Salmon Protein Chips in Marry my Husband . Because when you are tired and would love something to eat, you don't want actual food, you want Salmon Protein Chips! Bonus points to the actors for being able to keep a straight face while eating them
Most Effective PPL The icecream shop in A Korean Odyssey Because I love icecream, and I would be in that shop tomorrow if it existed in my country. Also, it was a refreshing change from all the Coffee shop PPL
Most Ignored PPL All that coffee shop PPL mentioned above. Chains that don't exist in my country, selling a product I don't want. But I am very grateful that they give many productions an outside filming set for low or no budget, meaning the dramas are not always stuck in a studio.
Most bewildering PPL That mositurising stick that they get actors to run over their face and neck. Why is their skin so dry? Is it genetics, or the weather, or the geography? Or do they have a shiny face cultural that is alien to my western put-powder-on-so-you-do-not-shine culture?
Most pervasive ppl The cars. It's easy to take for granted as part of the plot, but even a well off middle income doctor is unlikely to be able to afford a Maserati. (I liked the bicycle in My love from a Star though. I guess they were not able to find a big car PPL deal for that)
Most fascinating PPL The PPL that does not exist- the coffee breaks that don't show any brand, the fashion clothing with fictional branding-You can see the bones of the drama, scenes that were written for the sales team to sell for PPL slots. Dramas that have a lot of empty slots/fake branding did not have as much money for production/rewrites/are not doing as well, and it often shows in more than just the PPL.
The best PPL Anything that fits the story and doesnt put in stupid marketing phrases. Am loving the PPL in QoT at the moment, I hope it doesnt go too overboard in the last episodes. I can cope with Subway ads if I don't also have the actors telling me how tasty it is.

Don't know about 2024, but I'll always chuckle at how Welcome to Waikiki satirized PPL by having Joon-ki do ever more ridiculous things because they were filming the last scene of the drama and they'd forgotten to shoot a whole bunch of ppl.

I came close to buying a stylish green Delonghi electric kettle that I'd seen in several Kdramas, but it didn't have a multiple temperature settings feature. I found it odd because this particular model appears to be sold on the Japanese market; the more delicate teas favored there are meant to be steeped at a lower temperature than black teas. So I went with function over form and bought a Cuisinart model. Using water at the proper temperature really does make a difference when I'm making a cup of green or oolong tea.

We had a temperature -setting kettle for a while. But we were not happy with it. For Green tea, we stop the kettle after the kettle has gotten loud-its the right temp a moment after the loudest point. White tea is a tad earlier.
What we would buy if we were rich- The fancy contraptions that have a more precise temp setting, and lower your tea into the hot water when it reaches exactly the right temp.

I’m a tad neurotic when it comes to brewing tea. I even weigh the loose tea in a special scale I bought for the purpose. I was trying to monitor the water temperature by sticking my thermapen into the kettle while it was heating. I figured it was worth the investment to buy the programmable one to avoid the inevitable burn. The cost wasn’t too bad, and it’s a device I use daily.

I agree, but Perfect is the enemy of good for us. We would buy the expensive exact one if we could.I have had tea made with it, and especially for Oolong that can have quite differing temperature ranges, its fantastic. But the ones we could buy that were in our price range only had 10 degree increments, and I can get that from just listening to the kettle.

I'm really concerned about Korean health. How are they getting enough protein- there are thousands of chickens crying because no one is eating Fried Chicken. A couple of years ago it was the only way to meet a friend, mix beer and soji, or eat pizza was with Fried Chicken. The are doomed!!!
