Premiere Watch: Queen of Tears

Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Rom-com, family, human, office
Episode count: 16
Global streamer: Netflix

Reasons to watch: One of the biggest buzz dramas of the year is finally here! Hitting our weekend slot this week is Queen of Tears — the latest drama from writer Park Ji-eun of Crash Landing on You and You From Another Star fame, and starring — ICYMI — Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won. The story takes us to new territory in dramaland as we visit a married couple of commoner + chaebol heiress after their happily ever after. And I don’t know about you, but it’s a welcome departure from the usual setup. Fingers crossed on it being as charming as it should be. Also starring are Kwak Dong-yeon, Park Sung-hoon, and Lee Joo-bin, in addition to an impressive ensemble supporting cast of family members and coworkers. As for the talent behind the camera, we have talented PDs Jang Young-woo and Kim Hee-won here. I don’t want to jinx it, but can you hear the K-drama history being made?

TL;DR: The Kim Soo-hyun x Kim Ji-won rom-com is finally herrrrrreeeeee

Also, I can’t understand how people are already rating a drama that hasn’t been released yet.

A few people (? or bots?) have been playing games with ratings here for a while. If enough real beanies who've actually watched the show add ratings over time, it should settle into a score more reflective of their reactions.

I was thinking this day won't come anymore!!!

Now, I hope I won't be disapointing like the last year, the most anticipated ones were quite disapointing like King the Land.

But Kwak Dong-Yeon said we need to watch it because there is a lot money in it! I will trust him :p

Applying reverse logic of someone who loved KTL, this must mean that this show is going to be a winner! 😂
Woohoooo!!!

I rewatched Shooting Stars after KTL, and noticed there is Lee Sung Kyung practically doing a cf every few minutes. I had neither noticed nor cared about most of them on first watch because PPL has been an inseparable part of kdrsmas forever. I only kept noticing them on rewatch because of the outcrys about KTL. None of them were out of the ordinary. But PPL seems to hit differently when it involves Yoona.

Also, I'm sorry if that was uncalled for and offending to anyone. It had been weighing heavily on my mind for some months and I unburdened myself at the first mention of KTL's PPL and a sympathetic Beanie!

@midnight
Unburden yourself away, I think it is a good point well made. When beanies hate a drama they do not always acknowledge that some of things they disliked are in all dramas and they may have tolerated or even ignored them in a drama they enjoyed.

@midnight Spot on. PPL can be cringey in dramas, but it surely is part of most shows. I don’t see KTL as a main offender here either… Also I guess while watching PPL (and feeling sorry for anyone having to bite into a subway sandwich), I usually phase out anyways. (Unless it’s a chaebol grandpa wearing a sheet mask sporting the print of a cartoonish raccoon face on it! 😂 Entertaining PPL for the win!)

Also, I agree with @reply1988 💯!

7

@Midnight if I'm interested in the story and the characters, I don't mind PPL. But KTL was completely empty, neither of the story and the characters were interesting enough. So the PPL was the outstanding part but overall the fact they made a whole episode about Thailand that was just a big PPL.

So far, so good....I just have to figure a way to balance QoT, Wonderful World and Goryeo-Khitan War.

Praying that this is actually good and not merely a PPL cringe-fest. The cast looks awesome, I had no idea Park Sung-hoon was part of the main cast yay!

The promotion circuit was probably just a few weeks, but my god it felt like months. I’m just buzzing with excitement. It’ll be out on Netflix in the next couple of hours for me. I’ll be refreshing lol

I like it when casts coordinate their outfits.

just finished episode 1 on Netflix - 1 hour 15 minutes but it didn't feel like it, I know first episodes are not a reliable indicator of a good drama but this was a strong one and Kim Ji-won makes an excellent classic Park Ji-eun heroine (i.e. in possession of a really strong personality). Multiple points had me cackling with laugher, too. Please be good all the way through, QoT!

The 75 minutes definitely went by very quickly! I really liked the first episode. I'm looking forward to seeing Park Sung Hoon in episode 2!

Hilarious to have Kim Soo-hyun satirize over his own stardom:
😭🥴"I AM TOO CUTE WHEN I AM DRUNK! EVERYBODY ALWAYS SAID THAT!"🥴😭

I've been waiting for this since it was announced and the premiere episode was just as good as I hoped! (fingers crossed till the finale episode)
I think she is fine, one (or all) of his family members informed her and she came up with this plan to stop him.
