My interested article for this week was all about the current trend of K-drama production and it's schedule due to this week's prime-time Kdrama schedule on TV/non-streaming format that was rarely, completely emptied the Wed.-Thurs. slot for the first time.
https://koalasplayground.com/2024/03/14/established-drama-lead-actors-and-actress-discuss-lack-of-script-offers-and-drastic-drop-off-in-k-dramas-being-produced-in-2024-so-far/
My interested detail was that during 2023/last year, there was 250 filmed Kdrama productions but there was unfortunate apparent backlog with only 100+ Kdramas that left to be unreleased or still shopping either to broadcasting TV networks or to streaming platforms (Netflix/Disney+/TVING/Prime Video/Coupang Play/Paramount+). By 2024, only about 40+ Kdramas on deck to be filming. I knew that the backlog also included the two highly anticipated Kdramas that still waited too long: Ask the Stars and Kdrama related to BTS, Youth, which was slated to be released on Web 3.0 only. The current Kdrama schedule for KBS was one Mon.-Tues. Kdrama, daily soap and the weekend drama, while the current Kdrama schedule for MBC was daily soap and the only one weekend Kdrama. The SBS current Kdrama schedule was only one weekend drama. The current ENA Kdrama schedule was only a Mon.-Tues. Kdrama slot. TVN already stopped producing Kdrama for Wed.-Thurs. slot last year, but the current Kdrama schedule was now only two Kdramas (one for Mon.-Tues. slot and the other one was for the weekend slot). JTBC's Kdrama schedule was only one weekend Kdrama. So waiting for next month on April 13 for only MBN's weekend drama was sageuk drama Missing Crown Prince starring Suho. So long, OCN and I don't think if Channel A will not produce Kdrama anymore after Man and Woman became one of the lowest-rated Kdramas ever.

Such an interesting perspective. Also do we have any clue as to why the "two highly anticipated Kdramas" you mentioned were not prioritized. I mean both have genuinely worldwide popular stars.

Ask the Stars costed a lot to produce and they are negociating to find a channel or a platform that can pay a lot. But I wonder if they were too exiging.

The South Korean government’s decision to add 2,000 new openings in medical school admissions has caused chaos both in the medical and academic fields. It is not a solution to alleviate the immediate needs of medically underserved or specialty areas, claims policy protesters. Despite fierce opposition, South Korea’s 40 medical schools have collectively requested an increase in the annual student quota by 3,401 starting in 2025. This figure is 70 percent higher than the planned increase of 2,000 students.

The interns, residents and physicians walkout has entered its fourth week. Students are leaving classrooms, and medical professors are quitting in droves in a show of protest, which the Yoon Suk Yeol government sees as collective action that breaches medical law and holds people’s lives and health hostage. Many hospitals have stopped treating patients or sending them to other facilities to get urgent care, but care may not be available at that location. Medical care is now worse than during Covid.

As a consequence, authorities have started taking legal steps against trainee doctors who refused to heed return-to-work orders, such as by moving to suspend their licenses for at least three months. Police have also opened investigations against five former and incumbent Korean Medical Association executives for allegedly aiding and abetting junior doctors’ collective resignations. Public sentiment has not been supportive of the doctors’ actions, with some criticizing them for allegedly abandoning their Hippocratic oath.

The problem is that adding more students and new doctors does not mean that they will go to rural areas to practice medicine, or deal with declining practice areas such as pediatrics, emergency care and obstetrics. New doctors want to go where the money is: dermatology and plastic surgery. Further, professors are upset that the student work load would double - - - while they have their own full-time medical practices.

While South Korea provides universal healthcare through the national insurance service run by the health ministry, and service fees strictly regulated; more than 90 per cent of hospitals and clinics are privately owned so many doctors open their own practices that deal with non-state covered (PRIVATE PAY) procedures, which would include medical tourism.

No doctor wants to serve in semi-urabn area, leave alone looking at rural regions - it's a profession to make money and quite a good business. It's the same everywhere in the world. A tv drama is good for delusions but realities of world are pretty different.

And a pvt doctor makes far far more compared doctor overburdened in a govt hospital - anyone with common sense will take pvt route.

And even if your study is ran on govt scholarships n subsidies u hv to forcefully spend years in govt hospitals.

I do not understand this. People are protesting admitting more med students?
How is that worth doctors leaving their positions? And why are those practices declining?! How could emergency care be on a decline?!

I can't help but look at this judgementally. The superficial practices is where everyone is flocking to? Really?

No. The medical board wants to add 3401 to the quota. The gov't said 2000 is the increment they'd give. (3401-2000)/2000 * 100= 70%. The medical boards number is 70% in addition to what the gov't allowed. Since the number given to the board is too low compared to what they asked for, the gov't wants to meet them almost halfway, then medical board is protesting against it.

So I might be able to shed some light on this. I'm a physician in the US and know Korean physicians in the US that are following this story. It's very complex, but one problem is that Korea is a very litigious society and doctors get sued and lose their livelihood easily (see Dr. Slump). Therefore, they do not want to do very risky procedures and subspecialities that may be required to do very complex and risky procedures to save the patient because they are worried they would be sued for a complication or unfavorable result. Also, the government health insurance pays doctors pennies on the dollar of what it actually costs to see a patient, like less than $10/patient sometimes. That is just unsustainable for a practice that isn't doing some cash pay work like aesthetic procedures that aren't covered. Therefore, many go to those specialties where they can get paid cash from patients and not depend on the government paying them. The doctors that don't have these cash generating procedures have to see upwards of 100 people a day just to make ends meet. That is not good care, and then if they miss something and the patient dies, they get sued and lose their livelihood as well. The answer isn't more doctors, the answer it's an overhaul of the government subsidized insurance to pay physicians so that they won't be overworked and overstressed to make a living. I know a doctor that left Korea to work in the US and would never go back because of this. It's a terrible place for doctors to work, apparently. She says that Hospital Playlist is a fantasy. Those doctors would not have time to form a band an practice because they all would be working to the end of the day and then be stressed that something they did may get them sued later, especially in those surgical specialties.

As a comparison, as a subspecialist, I see between 12-25 patients a day. I have procedures I do as well but have a large staff that does a separate procedure clinic (allergy shot clinic) while I see patients in my clinic. Like everyone else in Korean society with a job, doctors are way overworked there for the most part. And keep in mind that the training to be a physician is grueling wherever you are, and then you finish just to be worked to death.

Yeah, I remembered I was so happy when I finished. Then I had chilling thought: " why I am so happy, I will be slaving with all the responsabilities on my shoulders". To pay the student loan first. I cannot even think how these new grads are feeling with all this debt nowadays. I hear that it's about 90k a year in some medschools, on top of undergrad and living expenses. At least in my native country ( and probabky SK ) the education is free so they start debt free, without a 600k (from what I hear) chain on their neck. Also, many that work in government hospitals triage and refer their patients to their private offices/clinics where they can charge more and ends up being more a place where they can grow their office. They still work more hours but they don't have student loans to worry about. Many are professors that profit from that name in their private office. People find ways to work the system, but what the Sk government is doing is just unacceptable.

Yes, they are protesting admitting more medical students. The question for me is why are they increasing the doctors if the population is decreasing. And the increase is very quick and very abrupt, about 70% more. By 2035 they will add 10000 more doctors. This is from an AP article:

"The government plans to raise South Korea’s yearly medical school admission caps by 2,000, from the current 3,058.

The enrollment plan is meant to add up to 10,000 doctors by 2035 to cope with the country’s fast-aging population. Officials say South Korea has 2.1 physicians per 1,000 people — far below the average of 3.7 in the developed world. "

That means that they will flood the job market, almost double it. It's huge and done very quickly. The population is declining so why are they doing it? Even they have fewer doctors per 1000 people, they do work more hours than your average western doctor so it evens out.
I do not know how is in SK, but I know what happened in US in my field and I can tell you that things changed drastically from 20-25 years ago. Not only that they increased the number of students but also made it easier to take the boards and to have the requirements to be allowed to take the boards for foreign diploma holders. During that time the tuition tripled but the entry level jobs are the same, maybe a raise of 20%. Why the pay did not increase? Because there are too many. Soon will be a monopoly because the corporate is buying more and more practices and the big ones buy the small ones.
I see the same problems that my native country is facing, also with a very large state medical paid services. Corporate monopoly has not impregnated yet the system. Because the state pays for a large population, the prices in private sector are still acceptable and has not exploded like it did in US. There is a lot of push to convince people that the state medical care is not the same and that the taxes should not go towards that, so is best to have a system more like US with private insurance mostly. I see this move by SK a first step to provide enough cheap physicians for when they will be done with state paid medical care. Or for when the population will increase again in 2035. How? I don't know.
One must know what else are they voting along with this change. Mostly they vote other more important things and we don't hear about them because something else makes so much noise and is paraded in front of us like a red muleta.

If you ask me, the doctors are right. If you need to increase the numbers, at least do it gradually not like this. 10000 new doctors by 2035 means the population will have to grow by 3,3 million (if we apply 3 doctors per 1000 people like is now, you can do the math for 3.7 ) to be as competitive and worth doing it after so much training and sacrifice. It is an insult to the profession if the population doesn't grow. If it does by another way, it's an insult to the whole country.

The USA is also experiencing a critical lack of doctors. Recent surveys predict that there will be a shortage of as many as 139,000 physicians by 2033—more than a third of them primary care providers. About 80% of medical practices say they are already having trouble recruiting physicians. Doctors are in such short supply that the average time a patient spends in the waiting room (20 minutes) exceeds the amount of time they spend with the doctor (10-15 minutes).

There are a number of factors contributing to the problem: the time, cost, and availability of medical training; burnout; the exorbitant cost of liability insurance; too much time required for administrative tasks (about 9 hours a week, on average); and an aging population creating an increased demand for surgeries, diagnostic tests, and other medical procedures. The shortage of family physicians and others in primary care is especially severe, largely because these positions typically have a much lower income than specialized doctors.

In rural areas, doctor shortages—particularly specialists—are already at a crisis level. According to recent reports, there are currently about 418 rural hospitals at risk of closure. In some areas, rural surgeons and emergency medical technicians have to seek advice via video from physicians who may be hundreds of miles away.

And I haven't even touched upon the role of America's disastrous health insurance system in this crisis...

Honestly, I after watching Life(2018), it was only a matter of time before the social issues raised become a problem that brought work to a stand still. With the focus more on profits that hospitals make for the corporations or groups or boards that head them, it was only a matter of time before the red-departments receive little number of doctors wanting to specialize in them, with emergency surgery as the number one department.

A hospital in its right senses should not expect its emergency department to cough up profit for it. What they should have focused on is the number of patients who were stabilized in emergency before being transfered to the moneymaking departments.
And the likelihood (I stand to be corrected) that emerg doctors whose departments are sinking money face some kind of diss and look from the hospital board(hospital board ≠ medical board)...they are like the low class in the medical caste system. It is only a matter of time before it stops having new blood and hands.

I feel like the above paragraph is a bit unrelated to why new doctors are choosing plastic surgery and dermatology as their specialization, but I also think it plays a part nonetheless.

Plastic surgery and dermatology are money-making fields of medicine. Who doesn't want to pay what is needed to look good. I think that a reason why new docs flock to these departments is the renumeration it brings them. I also think it is way easier for them to establish as an independent private practice entirely outta the hospital that doesn't need the services of any other medical specialty. On an aside, I believe psychiatry focused on psychology and counselling also has this leverage but they are not the ones being made mention of here. Since they can function independently, more money for them, hence more profit.

The declining number of practices in emerg, peds and OB-GYN owes majorly to thier work conditions. The toll it takes is quite different from the toll on other medical speciality staffs.

I believe that if working conditions are improved for these departments, more new doctors will want to join the fold. And the hospital board needs to stop seeking to gain profit from these departments cause the likelihood of them being in the red for a whole fiscal year is 10-12 months. The magnanimous surplus made by the money making specialties should be enough for them. That way, doctors in this fields can work without worrying that they are not making money for the hospital. And they won't be treated as the lower class of the medical field by other doctors.

With the above paragraph, I believe renumeration is not the only reason why new doctors are not joining the fields the medical board and hospital professors mentioned stop. It goes beyond the monetary benefits of plastic surgery and dermatology.

I was thinking it's an image thing like how it's one thing to quit and another thing to be fired and given the way work/job culture is, it's much harder to get a new job if you're seen as having a "problematic" work history (such as fired, suspended, disciplined).
From what I understand. Like I said, this whole thing confuses me.

I don't understand business so I really can't understand why the drama industry is shrinking due to streaming platforms or paid channels.

I thought in addition to original dramas, streaming platforms bought the rights or whatever to show old shows as well as currently airing shows. So wouldn't it make sense for there to be more dramas in the works to give more options amongst the different platforms and stations?

I saw an AllKPop post that was about actors feeling stressed because the drama industry is shrinking and they aren't being offered projects. One guy was like he would even take supporting role (or support to the support) as long as the project was good but he can't even get that. Another actor said they were going to school to certified so they could get a side job in skincare.

I think the acting industry is messed up around the world but I don't understand it.

So only the REALLY bankable actors can get acting jobs?

I wonder if drama actors would move into theater work but then that would push out theater actors. Ahh, I don't know! I don't understand.

In 2023, 250 k-dramas were produced but 100 never were broadcast.
In 2024, there are only 40 k-dramas scheduled to be filmed.
There was a rush of pre-produced shows in order to try to sell to streaming platforms who like to drop an entire season instead of the traditional real time filming for Korean
network TV shows.
In addition, there is less network and cable slots for dramas. The 3 major networks used to have dramas on every day of the week, weekenders and daily dramas. Now, KBS is down to one week night drama, one weekender, and one daily soap. MBC, SBS and JTBC are focused only on weekends. Even TVN is cutting back.
When Netflix and Disney pushed into the Korean drama market, their production budgets were double or triple the local norm. It was a heyday for top actors and producers. Netflix funded many shows for its own IP, but since Koreans do not get residuals many Korean companies decided to keep the IP and just license to stream platforms. That means local companies have to find their own investors. Also, those large American budgets and license fees have been dramatically cut during the Hollywood strikes.
In 2023, only about 5 of the 82 Korean films shown in local theaters made money which makes investors dry up when the movie audience/box office still less than 45 percent of pre-pandemic levels. The failure to make a profit can hurt a lead actor’s bankability and future film offers. Also, some actors may be offended that producers are no longer willing to pay previous top dollar for their services.
Ageism is still a problem for actresses who hit their 40s. Also, many actors and actresses have started to branch out to become directors or producers as a means of diversifying their income and having more control over their careers.
Another entertainment industry problem is that there are too many distractions (internet, games, TikTok, etc.) and lower attention spans of the young demographic to commit to trial and error to find cool popular shows for the tweens through twenties.

But isn't that a choice to not air the shows during the week and just focus on weekends unlike in the past?
Like why aren't shows pulling in audiences on wednesdays & thursdays like they did in the past? It feels like a dumb question but I don't get why that specific airing period got hit the most.

So the only thing that's still viable is variety shows?

So for the 100 unreleased dramas, did the director, staff, and actors get paid or are they all just waiting for someone to pick up the show distribution and pay out?

Good question. In c-ent crew and actors are paid (at least are supposed to) during filming, so dramas never getting released only hurts investors/platforms pockets. I vaguely recall some scandals regarding crews not being paid in SK, but idk if this is a common occurrence.

4

Required fields are marked *

The custom in Korea has been that movie actors get paid up front while TV drama actors get paid after an episode airs (after the production company is paid by the network). With the influx of American studios, this may have changed but I don't think so since actors, producers and directors are not under Hollywood union contracts.

yeah this will probably evolve. at first I didnt add ghosts, because it is not strictly religion more like supernatural mythology, but now I think it is so connected to shamanism that I have to. our question is what do koreans actually believe in. even though there are lots of catholic churches in dramas, priests and whatnot, ultimately they seem to believe in the "other realm", ghosts, spirits, dead walking on earth, afterlife etc, and that it is possible to communicate with this realm & bring benefits to oneself ( or avoid misfortune).

and omens? it is hard to find a picture of a prediction, usually itss a description

TALES FROM 9TAILEDVIXEN'S "BUSY BEE" WEEK:

1. Aerial Yoga Progress Report

I can now do my first beginner's Yoga pose (albeit shakily). HURRAH!

It's not one of those acrobatic moves but I am very proud of myself because it's not easy to push against the silks to open them up while my legs are screaming at the tremendous stretching to keep them straight while I hang off one end.

My arms hurt like the devil this week.

2. Getting "Itchy" Feet

It's been a hectic week as I countdown to my upcoming travels that will kick off at the end of this month. If it's not one thing, it's another.

PSA to anyone considering flying Emirates Airlines - They are the only full-service international airline that allows their Economy class passengers to only take ONE piece of carry-on luggage with them. No personal items allowed which means that you'll have to pack your laptop/handbag/umbrella/coat into your carry-on luggage or risk having to shell out a tidy sum for "Excess baggage".

I am NOT impressed, especially as this is the first time I am flying with them and most other airlines allow you one cabin luggage and one personal item. Packing my handbag into my cabin luggage makes no sense since I - like most women - carry my passport, purse and tickets in my handbag.

3. This week in Korean Women's News:

‘Not brainwashed robots’: North Korea’s ‘strong, creative and resilient’ women

A photo exhibition in Sydney depicts the changing roles of North Korean women. Academics trace how women in the authoritarian state transitioned from traditional roles to breadwinners spurred by the famine of the mid-1990s. More than 80 per cent of North Korean defectors are women.

Chae-ran is among a number of women who fled North Korea – only to be trafficked and sexually exploited in China, where a gender imbalance has created a black market for brides.

She managed to stage a second escape nearly two decades later, through Laos and Thailand. But opportunities for others to take the same path have narrowed since the pandemic, experts say – leaving untold numbers of North Korean girls and women trapped in servitude.

Hi beanies, just dropping in to say hello . Between Him and Her - I have to say I’m a little disappointed because there aren’t many twists or surprises it’s rather predictable. I was hoping for a more indie type drama. And a once a week drop isn’t helping with the slower pace. My favorite drama right now is Wedding Impossible and I’m happy it’s a Monday/Tuesday drop. Reading jazz’s article here makes me worry for Kdrama future; seems like turning back to the days when Kdramas were plentiful and enough variety of genres is impossible with the big players like Netflix, Disney etc. changing the field as well as other external factors.
Have a happy weekend all, it’s almost spring here, so long winter 👋

Happy Friday, Beanies! Sadly I'm no less tired than I was last time, but that's no excuse to not share more fun stuff with you, right? Yesterday THE LEGEND OF JEWELRY successfully finished filming Youku, where is our wrap up video, hmm?!, which gave my awfully uninspired brain an idea – we all know TLB OST and surely LYN will sing something for their second drama together as well (my bet's on another sugary ballad lmao – gotta keep the tradition), but what other ZLS's dramas his voice was in? Well, apparently a few)))

Most famous one must be this kickass track from WHO RULES THE WORLD (the eagle cry in the intro lol – you can't get more wuxia than that!). You'll never hear about me actually watching the show, but it must be pretty at least... There is an official MV with subs, but again, it's not the full song – same crap Tencent did to HEROES opening btw. Do you have a secret beef with my boy, stupid penguin, or what? Also release TPOB, dammit!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1dYThphEdE

Full version with pinyin (feat YY's face as a bonus if you're into that):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7opZ7Tssm3E

And live from stream (I remember that hair, it's from THE TRUTH filming!) where he sounds a little weak – cold, perhaps? No eagle imitation either – missed opportunity for sure.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNVUMq2epGk

OK, the beef thing must be real, because his next OST Tencent freaking cut IN HALF. Yeah, for real. I have no polite words rn. It's from A FEMALE STUDENT ARRIVES AT THE IMPERIAL COLLEGE (no words for this title either... it's cheap isekai web-novel level of bad omg) and the song is actually very fun. Idk if the drama is also funprobably not with such title, but here's a butchered official MV:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beEK8ccY2wA

Full version with subs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LoPtCetmzM

And omg, he must be obsessed with this track – he performed it on his streams more often than many of his legendary blockbusters! I feel like I'm missing some important context here... I was literally at loss which video to choose))) This one won because he was crazily hyper during the whole thing – who gave him sugar? - and I love that anime preppy boy look, blond hair (not wig for once!), glasses, giant smile and all, so adorable!

I think there's only one drama left since we've already excluded TLB, and that's GEN Z (another eye-rolling title). A full MV, whoa! Not a Tencent show, I guess)))

And live performance – coincidentally from the same extra hyper stream above. He's still veeery much in the feels despite a totally different sound and vibe – I'm starting to get sus... boy claims to never go live tipsy, but what was with him that day then?!

That's it for now))) I thought about also posting his newest OST released today, but that'd make 4 songs and 4 is not a good number... Plus he has another one coming on 18th and who knows what else, so I'll probably just drop both next week.

P.S. 6 links in one post, DB filter is surprisingly quiet - did we really just found a magical formula? I think I need to level this experiment up a bit - how about some Chinese sites? I've found a hella fun stuff on BiliBili recently - remember that predebut dark history talk we had a few weeks ago? *evil gremlin grin*

Thank you for continuing the weekly LYN love! I didn't see any notification, but checking has become a habit.😄
I only have time for one show, but I'm glad to have some good music to listen to while working.

I think it was his longest with that color - he trimmed and dyed it back into dark soon after. Wish we got blonde ponytail at least once - so close! *cries*

Damage from all the bleaching (he started with ginger/caramel brown, then went lighter and lighter) looked quite serious tho - even months after, during AJTL promo you could still see his hair being pretty fried...

I saw that Robert Downey Jr won and an academy award and honestly, one of the first things that came to mind was that kind of story could NEVER happen in SK. RDJ did drugs AND he's been to jail.

In SK, just dating gets you cancelled and heavens forbid you did drugs. Well then you just aren't deserving of life.

I'm not saying drug use is good or bad and this post isn't even about that specifically. It's about the way people are treated when they're shown to be flawed people or people who aren't clean cut is just crazy.

On one hand, I kinda get: celebrities are held to a higher standard and people idolize & emulate them so folks don't want their celebrities to do things that might seem like condoning "bad" things.
However! Celebrities are also just human beings too and yet there's never supposed to be "off"

If they become an idol trainee as a kid/teen or if they were child actors, when exactly would they have the time or space to make the screw ups that most people make growing up? When do they get to have learning experiences that form their personal identities outside of the entertainment industry? And then with all the pressures they're constantly facing, some of them turn to "bad" things and once it's discovered, everything about them is just filtered through that. It's so disheartening to me.

Like I saw some post that said Ji Chang Wook was one of the rudest celebrities because he vaped during rehearsal. I'm not sure what exactly vaping is but I think it's like smoking. None of the cast or crew seemed particularly bothered but when netizens found out, it became a thing. I get that it might not be a considerate thing but to include him as one of "THE" rudest seems excessive.

We already know Yoo Ah In's treatment was ridiculously excessive so no need for me to rehash that.

I know some actors/entertainers have come back after scandals but still, people like constantly bring it up as if that's apart of their permanent identity and there's even those who feel they should never have been allowed to come back.

tbh 2 things need to happen. school program in SK needs to talk more about humn rights & international laws that consider invasion of privacy, bullying, harrassment and online hatemondering a hate crime, usually cyberbullies here get a 4 month on parole and group therapy if they miss therapy they go to jail
second thing is, knetizens should be assgned a psychiatrist bc they are psychologically ill. it is not something a sane person does

At some point the netizens will have destroyed the careers of so many performers that there won't be enough of them left to produce any new entertainment. No new artists will emerge, because they'll be too afraid of having their every word and action scrutinized and dissected by the self-appointed morality police. We will all be stuck watching reruns and repeat listening to the same old music by the handful of artists who haven't been blacklisted.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

I have been absent because I kept postponing an announcement until I felt ready:

I finally have a job! 😢🎉

The veterans among you are familiar with my weekly unemployment woes on OT before COVID, so this one is for the newbies. I started an internship to become appointed as a civil servant, disappointed my boss and burnt out, became depressed because it was the last straw rather than a mere burnout, suffered panic attacks whenever I had to deal with my boss during sick leave…

The last straw turned out to be autistic burnout. Ever since that diagnosis it has been way easier to get things done. I was able to request my employer to look for another job for me on medical grounds, which is way less stressful and way more efficient than the standard job seeking hurdles you face by yourself.

So, I get to finish the second half of my internship followed by the civil servant appointment after all. But in another department, closer to home, parttime on medical grounds for at least a year. My new boss also seems to take my situation seriously and has been busy trying to accommodate me as much as possible. In short: the social service coworkers I often consult with all have a good feeling about this working out.

Why I was not ready to announce this as soon as I got the news early February?

It is just a job offer. It is just people doing their job properly. It is just people showing decency and respect to a newcomer...

Because I am still stuck in the past. A past filled with classmates, teachers, employers, colleagues, relatives. A past filled with mockery, rejection, reprimanding. A present still filled with hurt and fear.

There, I announced it. Now I cannot deny this great news any longer. I have to welcome it and believe that this time, it really, finally will all work out.

Take that, inner demons.

From what I read on Soompi & Allkpop, reports make it appear as if Hyeri seems like she hasn’t moved on from the relationship, and it looks like she’s upset and trying to sabotage Ryu Jun Yeol’s new relationship with Han So Hee. The reports are making the women look like they’re going at each other— making Han So Hee appear (overly??) protective of this new relationship because she’s reminding people that they need to back off because this is her private life (which, good for her, because she’s right), and making Hyeri look like she’s the bitter ex— but what’s new? It’s always going to be the women that are being picked apart. All Ryu Jun Yeol did was put out a statement confirming the new relationship (happy for him!) and we don’t see anyone going after him 🤷🏻‍♀️😒😒

Hyeri and HSH were wrong to react to the rumors. They would have been fine.

Everybody is calling RJY ugly, that he doesn't deserve them, that he's a cheater, etc. So no, he's taking a lot when he did nothing.

I kindly disagree, in the sense that I don’t think the women were wrong in reacting—there’s nothing wrong with trying to protect yourself and to protect your peace— but there’s a way to go about it. Their character as people are being slammed. Han So Hee is being called a home wrecker and a “transit” girl when she also did nothing but stand up for herself.
I’m not saying that RJY being attacked for his looks is right, either. Full stop.

I will say this:
How—and as @seeker also put it… WHY— is this anyone’s business except their own? The 3 of them.
Yes, they are public figures and celebrities and some things can’t be avoided but to be made public, but this didn’t have to be. Some things about being a celebrity don’t actually “come with the job”. The person who took those pics of them in Hawaii did it illegally and infringed on their privacy and I believe RJY’s agency is doing something about it now.
Some things don’t have to be an issue and/or don’t have to be made public if another person didn’t start it in the first place.

That’s all I’m going to say about this.

Ah, is this a new "scandal" that's gonna affect his public perception and work now?

Now people are gonna hate him, not wanna watch him because of this?

How can it seem "overly" protective of their personal relationship by telling people that it's none of their business and they aren't entitled to know about it or give their two cents?

I think she’s fine, but I’ve seen comments online saying that she’s “overreacting” and being “overly” aggressive/protective about the whole thing

It's all so stupidly annoying. These celebrities keep getting raked over coals for doing things NORMAL everyday people do.

A young couple likes each likes each other and dates = hate
A couple breaks up and one moves on = hate
A couple divorces = hate
A couple gets married = hate
A couple get married in large due to the woman being pregnant = hate
People date or had hook ups before they got famous = hate
People have hook ups period = hate

It's just all so stupid and I think eventually celebrities might snap because it's such B.S.

(They'll snap and then have to issue an apology causing the cycle to continue)

I think one of the most asinine logic leaps was when people got mad at Karina's apology saying she made her fans look crazy and bad. No, her "fans" made themselves look crazy, unhinged, and bad. Her company is also to blame.

This has been bothering me. So I went hunting. And found this:
Recent studies have shown that Koreans drink the largest amount of alcohol in the world.[14] In the past, people drank on specific days like New Year's, but presently alcohol can be consumed regardless of the occasion. The goal of drinking parties is to promote good fellowship and opening one's heart to socializing.
According to a 2018 WHO report, citizens of the Republic of Korea drink 10 litres (2.2 imp gal; 2.6 US gal) of alcohol per capita per year.[17]

https://iris.who.int/bitstream/handle/10665/274603/9789241565639-eng.pdf
The most eye-popping part:
Drinking plays an important role in workplace socialization in Korean culture. One of the most important forms of socialization in Korean organizations is hoesik or "dining together".[22] Hoesik and "bottoms-up sessions" are time for employees to gather and encourage each other to consume alcohol. These drinking sessions help promote and influence idea sharing and building of social networks. It has been reported that a typical job application form will even ask applicants to reveal whether or not they drink alcohol and if so, how much do they consume.[22] Also part of the application process is the so-called "alcohol interview", where the applicant is given several shots of alcohol to consume. This will determine their alcohol tolerance and if they are someone who will work well with the organization.
NO wonder ALL k-drama characters drink like fish. Even the TV interview has people opening drink bottles.....no wonder one character asks another character right after surgery - 'Will you be able to drink?'
A great article: https://www.nhis.or.kr/magazin/mobile/201612/c01.html
