Yonhap News Agency reported this week that only one out of 35 Korean films of a certain scale was directed by a female director last year. Action thriller "The Point Men," directed by Yim Soon-rye, was the sole movie helmed by a female director among the 35 commercial films with a production budget exceeding 30 billion won ($2.25 million), according to the report released by the Korean Film Council (Kofic) on the status of gender equality in the Korean film industry.
The state-run movie promotion agency has been publishing the report every year since 2017. The ratio of female directors hit its lowest last year.

The number of female producers stood at 22, or 23.9 percent; female lead actors were at nine, or 25.7 percent; and female screenwriters came to 12, or 21.8 percent. There were no female cinematographers.
Out of the total 183 Korean films, including independent and art films, the number of female directors grew to 49, or 22.8 percent, with female producers at 77 (24.8 percent), lead actors at 81 (40.7 percent), screenwriters at 67 (30.7 percent) and cinematographers at 18 (8.1 percent).

"The involvement of female talent was relatively robust in low-budget, independent and art films, but it appears to be limited in the commercial film segment," Kofic said.

Among the seven Korean films released on streaming platforms, there were neither female directors nor female cinematographers. But the number of female producers and lead actors came to four and five, respectively, as a spate of female-led films, including "Unlocked" and "Kill Boksoon," were released last year.

The Kofic expressed concern that the window of opportunity for female talent could shrink further, as the Korean film industry faces challenges due to producers' hesitation to make bold experiments following the Covid-19 pandemic. "The Korean film industry's creative talent and gender equality appear to have regressed since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic," it said, expecting the trend to persist amid sluggish investment in film industry.

What surprised me in the statistics is that a whopping 81 percent of Korean films have a production budget under $2.25 million (US). Even with that low barrier, it is estimated that only a hand full of Korean films made a profit. Big budget films did poorly. The Point Men failed to surpass the break-even point, as it needed more than 3.5 million viewers to do so. On the other hand, Phantom, which premiered on the same day, only garnered 660,000 moviegoers and failed to attract over 3.3 million viewers to break even. The profits for South Korean movies are at an all-time low. According to the Korean Film Council’s report on the 24th, revenue from domestic films only accounted for 27.3 percent of the total market, which is about half of last year’s record of 54.4 percent. Korean moviegoers have also shown a lukewarm response to domestic movies, mostly due to the challenge of meeting their high expectations caused...

I think there is only a handful of women directors in any film / tv industry worldwide. Luckily tv generally has more women writers - simply coz the programing is more targeted towards women.

The Mayan civilization vanished in 900 AD. It left massive pyramids and city ruins in Central American jungles. Archeologists still debate what happened to the Mayan civilization. One theory is that a massive drought made city residents (up to 50,000 people) flee to find new water sources.

CBS News reported this week that Mexico City, population 22 million, will run out of water by June, 2024. There has been a water shortage for a while, but now it is predicted that the reserves will dry up by summer.

Citing the Water Basin Organization of the Valley of Mexico, local outlet La Razón de México reported last week that officials fear this "day zero" — when the Cutzamala System will no longer have enough water for residents — could come on June 26 and last until September. Locals are already struggling to have enough water, with many going "days, if not weeks, without running water in their houses," CBS News contributor Enrique Acevedo said.

"There's been water scarcity, water management, in the city that we haven't seen in at least a decade," he said. "Gyms here in Mexico City and other public parks had to start limiting the number of guests they have taking showers and using their facilities because a lot of people were taking advantage of their memberships to use water at those facilities."

Not everyone, however, believes "day zero" will come so soon. Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the government will be able to increase the water supply enough to avoid such an event this year, La Razón de México reported. Other researchers believe it's something that could happen in the years ahead.

Everyone takes a basic utility, like water, for granted. We do not need to make dystopian films when a documentary is unfolding right before our eyes. But the unanswered question is: where would 22 million people go?

Indeed the "future" is now. The scarcity of water and other resources are a pressing issue especially in cities with immigrant population coming in from villages and semi-urban areas looking for a livelihood or a better access to education and resources.

Drought has been a reason for displacement for centuries. Most Irish population in the USA is a result of such a drought in Ireland in the mid 1800s.
The Colorado river system is currently in crisis. Considering it forms the life giving veins in the Colorado basin, its been interesting how they are tackling it. Two biblical blizzards and rain has dug California out of famine recently.

Not to be pedantic about this, because the main point of your comment is entirely true, but the famine that was one of the main causes of Irish move to the U.S. was caused by blight, a fungus attacking the potato--as well as the exploitive system of landholding dominated by English absentee landlords.

And to amplify what you are saying about the Colorado river system, it is in crisis is not just because of drought, but because of excessive demands on its water supply, which are only partly brought by rapid expansion of the urban population. Corporate agriculture operations in Arizona and California are simply going to have to stop growing water intensive crops in the desert.

Driving through the Imperial Valley of California, as I have quite often, it is stunning to see acres and acres of heavily irrigated alfalfa, one of the most water demanding crops, especially when I know a lot of that is being shipped around the U.S. and the world--for a while China was the biggest purchaser of U.S. feed--for large scale dairy and meat operations .

Although the original comment was about Mexico and drought, I think it interesting that Korea's main issue with climate change will likely be increased intensity of typhoons and flooding. There was actually very passing reference to this in two (what I thought were) very weak romances, Welcome to Samdal-ri and Forecasting Love and Weather. I'm sure there will be more climate change references in the future, maybe even a remake --"I'll go to you when the Weather is Deadly"

Before everyone gets scared, let's remember that they had many years of drought in Joseon. And their way to fix it: get everyone married. Need I say more?
Probably they first have to try to fix other problems because:
-they lose 40% of water supply due to bad infrastructure (holes in pipes)
-the mafia uses the water to grow avocado (California grows pistachios but no mafia....
-wealthy mexicans fill artificial lakes for aesthetic purposes.

"But the president’s remarks have hardly quelled the brewing outrage. On at least two occasions this year, protesters blocked traffic near the offices of Mexico’s National Water Commission to express outrage over inequality in water access. Wealthy Mexicans continue to fill artificial lakes for aesthetic purposes even as millions go with limited or no water access at all. Water-guzzling factories are also coming under criticism, while an unknown quantity of water is siphoned off by organized crime groups to maintain lucrative avocado orchards that have sprung up near the distant reservoirs that supply water to Mexico City.

Luengo says mismanagement and aging infrastructure play a huge role in the current crisis, noting that the city loses 40% of its water supply due to leaks in the pipes. “This unsustainable water management accentuates the severity of the water situation in the city,” Luengo says."

Protests - u can continue - big elections time.

Politics - hahaha - donut on the run - i love this - real world and politics are such a big boost entertainment. playing games is boring when you can turn whole real world into a big game - high risk, high reward game. I truly enjoy this.

I'm enjoying all this from middle school days - if u hv interest then u hv interest and i say - print media aka newspapers help build you this kind of interest.

two 75+ guys u for election - what it tell about gen z or millennials - two old guys doing more for their chair - old guys surely know how to fight.

same for neta boy or moody or even putler - all are into 70s and how much the hunger they show for power and control - ambitious surely these dudes are - more important is they know if they fall, they have done enough shit and angered other sides so much that they will be done for so they try to latch to this position or power at any cost by any means - its less of hunger and more of survival and then crushing down the opponents.

simple but quite entertaining if you are not on the receiving end - just grab your popcorn and enjoy the live show.

today's the international day - yeah yeah - another marketing day.
does female labour get paid the same as male labour? ask this simple question. leave alone open market - just check out bureaucracy aka govt which does include military - you get your answer.

I've always said if you want to fight for yourself then you have to be financially independent - not many females are and many don't want to be. money drives the game more than you want to believe.

In a big company you can fight and get and hv equal rights but most world isn't like that - labour laws aren't of much help as much as everyone thinks so - fighting battles by law is exhausting and you get -ve reputation in over competitive market.

so having this n that day - doing 50 shows and attending 100 seminars and blah blah blah talk is nothing. Society is a whole lot different game.

Grow your bank balance and see how everything becomes so easy. money not only walks but loudly talks too. everything else is phony talk which face masks mostly indulge in.

What to do: definitely go to a palace and museum for get an understanding of Korea's history and culture; go to one of the large luxury malls (Lotte, Hyundai or COEX) to window shop and people watch; use the subway to get anywhere you want to go.

What to eat: I would try a local clean noodle shop; there are a billion coffee/dessert cafes; and try the convenience store food experience - - - biggest recommendation try the Yeonsei Cream Milk Bread.

@welh640 I'm planning a 2 week trip to S. Korea in the next year and will have time to explore both Seoul and other parts of the country (such as Daegwallyeong Pass lol. It's easy to identify the major tourist sites (most of which I will avoid in favor of the museums), but trying to identify "street" life (malls, food, etc) is not easy. I'll be using your list as a starting point. Thanks - 😊

How fun! I'd second the recommendation for Coex. It has the Starfield library in it, it's close by to the Gosok Terminal (the GOTO underground shopping mall) and Kpop road if you are into that.

I'd also recommend going to the area of Gwangbokgung (probably the most popular palace to visit in the heart of Seoul) since it's also close to a lot of other fun tourist destinations:(Cheonggyecheon, a recreated stream that's now just a hot place to walk around at night and sometimes has a night market on the weekends) (the statues of King Sejong and General Yisunshin), and Jogyesa (the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism).

There's a night river cruise that leaves from Yeouido that I think may be the river cruise you see at times in kdramas (not certain on that but how many river cruise companies are there on the Han river?). Also by Yeouido you can just see a KBS broadcasting building, so that's fun.

South of the river is Gwangmyeong cave in Anyang, but there's not much nearby unless you want to visit a Costco or IKEA while in Korea.

You might consider taking the train out to Wolmido however - there's a Chinatown and "fairytale village" that are fun to visit, and Wolmido itself has a few amusement part rides and is just a fun area to wander. It's the location of the "retraced date" in Girl Who Sees Smells.

So far as Halal foods go, and here's a disclaimer I don't know everything about Halal or your personal practice of it, there are a few fun options:

Ddeokbokki and pajeon
Bungeoppang (the fish shaped pastry bread filled with red bean paste or a cream filling that I like)
Naengmyeon (not usually a meat dish - cold noodles in a vinegary broth or you can get bibim naengmyeon which is not watery and a bit spicy)
Vegetable or Tuna kimbap
Cheese Dalkgalbi (a personal favorite of mine)
Bingsu - there's a restaurant Seolbing that makes really good ones.

If I had to recommend just one historical museum to visit, I would say The National Palace Museum of Korea located in Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul. It has everything from palace life, cultural rites, and Joseon history. And it is free admission.

I would probably hit the palaces Gyeongbukgung or the less crowded Changdeokgung which are near each other. Take note of the opening days though since its not open everyday. Since you are already in the area, you can visit the Bukchon Hanok Village. There are restaurants nearby that you can visit for lunch.
At night, Myeongdong is a good place for shopping.
As a drama fan, you can visit some nearby filming locations since there are lots.

I caught up with Goryeo-Khitan War this week - episodes 25-30 - 6 hours straight in quick succession and I think I can say the break I took from it was worth it. I don't think I'd have enjoyed it well if I had watched it weekly. This is the second time it's happening with this drama. I equally took a break from it and binged some mid-episodes the last time I watched GKW. But...that's not why I'm making this comment.

Watching this drama brought to mind a lot of things. I took a break from King of Tears, Lee Bang-won the moment the fallout between Bang-won and Queen Won took root. I wasn't ready to see fallout, especially knowing what resulted from it thanks to history. Unlike KoTLBW, I was ecstatic about the fallout of the King and Empress here. No doubt she is a wise empress. I didn't like the fact that the imperial family's interests was her interests and what she determined to protect, fight for, and with, even though her husband thought otherwise.

But at the end of the day, I got to see her essence in the drama. The coup really brought out the very reasons I loved her in the first place - she is ready to do what needs to be done, for the sake of the imperial family. And in this case, the imperial family was her husband. Whilst she was tricked into being a fellow perpetrator of the coup, I liked how she handled matters nonetheless.

The conversation with the King after he found out her hands in the matter made me blame him a huge bit for the fallout between him and her. While his ministers oppose him at every turn, he never stops extending an olive branch to them. But he didn't do same to her. It took him a whole lot of time to realize that she was a symbol of the imperial court. And, in my honest opinion, had he found a way to work with her, they would have made a power couple. She has the brains. However conservative she was and progressive he is, the truth is he needed to convince her about his ideals. Once he has plead his cause to her and they found an understanding, all he had to do was sit back and watch her convince the imperial court and royal relatives. She might not take his side on all matters, but she was a wise woman who knew when to deflect. It wasn't only about "can't you see the good I am trying to do", it was about shaking the very core of their foundations in a way that wouldn't cause drama. Convince her and it would have been an almost easy-peezy implementation.

Second, I stand with the military coup. Even though it happened in the middle of war, restructuring, and threatened the defense of the country, the effontery of the civil officials to come for the lands of the military officials was the highest insult. Episodes ago, these officials rained hailstones and thunder when the King came for their autonomy over district regions. They kicked against it from left to right. Did they expect that the military would just sit back and do nothing? Honestly, I liked that the military guys held them in...

... the conference hall. I liked that the dumb spineless senior official who presented the idea was beaten sufficiently. I felt sorry for the younger guy though. Seems like he knew the plan was faulty but fell into the trap he set for his boss. I know that Hyeong-jung shut down the idea the moment it was brought up, but it shouldn't have even been deliberated. And, he should have shut it down in their presence instead of after they had left. The only thing I didn't like about the coup was the person spearheading it. Kim Hoon is a better politician than Choi Jil. Choi Jil's manner of behavior is a reason why the military are left out of civilian affairs, even in matters concerning them - they only know how to fight with the sword. But they do not know how to play ball. Kim Hoon knows how to play ball. And I was so sad to see him die at Seo-gyeong. He would have been the perfect bridge between military and officials. Hyeong-jung wasn't the one needing lessons here, it was his officials, Gang Gam-chan included. I hope they never make the mistake of messing with the dues of the military again.

Cutting the cost of governance should have been the first point of call instead of whatever idea the young official came up with.

Happy Friday, Beanies! Hopefully your week was less hectic than mine, which was a total nightmare - forget dramas, I barely had time to sleep, ouch. Thus not that much of a music today, sadly((( But I gave yall almost too many last week, so this kinda evens it out (or nah?).

First, something I was sure doesn't exist - THE LONG BALLAD OST performed live. Yep, I've found it, @kiara , can you believe it?! Already posted subbed MV before, so no need for that:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5sVwmpwcnk

Next is something even more precious - his other AJTL OST. The ballad one. The sad one (not that "Offer" was a very happy song either, esp in the latest episodes... ahem). Also apparently one of his favorite OSTs ever - he didn't bother to explain his reasoning, but I kind of get it anyway. Lyrics video with subs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yy1Vzh0Zsp8

And live version from like 2 weeks ago - you have NO IDEA how desperately I waited for him to sing it! Pls ignore the silly filter - he was in especially playful mood at the time, I guess... or it was a prevention measure to stop viewers from crying, idk. Not that it helped much:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLB9R2pflFo

While we're on the topic of Very Sad Ballads - ETERNAL BROTHERHOOD still have a few episodes to air (and possibly a Season2, tho I wouldn't be very hopeful for variety of reasons) and someone other than me (shocker, I know!) already posted his OST for that, but here's a subbed version to twist the knife even deeper. Enjoy the pain:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_zcgz6jK-A

And that's it for music. If our combined efforts managed to properly sour your mood, I'm sorry for that and can only offer (not that one!) a funny bonus to make things a little better. "Struggles of filming EB", subbed ofc:

Ah, almost forgot to tag folks in your little music club, sorry! @jillian, @zindigo, @wapzy, @isagc, @wonhwa, @seeker

While I still have some space to spare and dinner isn't ready yet anyway, let's talk about our boy's news. First of all, he (and other rumored people - soon we'll know for sure who's taller - LYN or ZLH! maybe I should make a bet on that lol) started filming THE TRUTH S2, which makes me very happy. New season looks even more expensive and rumored to be about an old haunted building *prayer circle for our boy's scaredy cat soul*, which I personally like more than last time's sci-fi mumbo-jumbo.

THE LEGEND OF JEWELRY is almost done filming - likely finishes in a week or two. Rumors keep teasing us with promises of kissing in the piles of blooming flowers LOTS of romance scenes... yunno what? I'll believe it when I see it))) Stylists even hilariously dressed Lusi very much like her TLB character once - nice to see them knowing their target audience, heh.

No rest whatsoever for LYN even after wrap - reportedly A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM is gonna start filming in April already (requirement for male extras to be 185+cm tall to fit his giant height got me rolling). It was pretty much confirmed to be an original script about FL isekai-ed (?) into novel where her character is supposed to get involved (romantically, I suppose, but details aren't clear) with a baddie ML and die painfully from his hand (ROTAR much?). She has none of it ofc and tries to stay away from the dude, but the narrative just won't let her! Eventually I think they join hands (does he gain awareness of being a fictional chara or just drops murder plans after catching feelz?) and fight the plot together. Sounds miles better than a certain novel and like plenty of fun overall. The only thing that gave me a pause was comedy tag - yep, ROTAR 2.0 indeed. S+ budget tho, wow. AND costume designer from TTEOTM/MJTY - he'll shine so much in her trademark rich bitch ornate robes, can't wait!

I managed to sleep finally and now feel better, thank you. Catching up with dramas is next.

I'm really interested what kind of era/dynasty style she'll go for since it's an original script. So far he was in 2 Tang dramas, 1 Eastern Han (TPOB), 1 Five Dynasties (pretty sure that's what AJTL was based on, tho idk about hanfu accuracy), 1 late Qing (still waiting for that one to air no, he's not traditionally half-bald there, plot gave him an excuse to avoid that lol) and a few unclear ones. Then again, it's a doubly fictional setting - a novel within a drama - so maybe no irl limits at all? Although c-novel writers looove their vivid fashion descriptions which allows them to cover up the lack of logic in plots.

Praying for his poor back once again though - FL is only 162... Cdramas are REALLY into this, aren't they? I couldn't believe my eyes in EB seeing that actress playing his wife was actually around my height and not far below his shoulder as usual! Seems like it was his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to not bend in half constantly)))

Also very disappointed to hear about all major battles happening off-screen and only described by exposition later. I know about show's tiny budget, but couldn't they invest in a few at least? *sigh* Guess there's really no point in making a show of this genre without HUGE money to burn for action scenes...

I will finish the 24 episodes of EB1 and if there is a EB2 it probably will be a pass for me.
I am glad I saw LYN’s performance in AJTL before watching this drama. The 3 MLs have been fine but LYN’s character is complex to say the least (with probably the least amount of screen time of the 3 bros). Zhang Min En’s Si Yilin seems to be the most transparent (what you see is what you get) and I can understand why he is a fan favorite.

Cannot say I'm very thrilled for another season (24 episodes more of a spoiled sheltered princess struggling with her first world problems while there's a bloody war within AND outside her country's borders? so exciting! *sarcasm*), but I'll probably tune in anyway, even if only for LYN scenes. From source material spoilers there should be some heavy angsty scenes from him I'm masochistically intrigued to see, if only for comparison purposes. Trailers also showed a bit of actual action (desert battle? filmed in a studio with dust/dirt instead of real sand, according to him lmao), but that can happen in Ep24 already, who knows. Wouldn't also be surprised with a cliffhanger ending for now, cdramas looove that!

Anyway, he still has a few other pretty much all ready for release shows, so if EB2 never arrives I'm perfectly fine with that too. Just give us TPOB something else soon instead!

2

Princess Ning annoys me. I am unhappy that she gets more screen time in later episodes. I like the other female characters better.
I am also sad at the minimal scenes that LyN gets in the episodes I have seen so far.

She'd be more tolerable if she was supposed to get a drastic character development arc later... but: a) I was spoiled that in the novel she won't - quite the opposite actually; b) there's hardly enough of time left and I'd rather not spend few remaining episodes of this season (if there even IS another season in plans) on her getting a long overdue reality check.

Heh, you're right, he's barely here at all. In fact, I'm pretty much looking forward to finish this soon and return to my torture fest hate-watch of HEROES - his chara there isn't treated with much respect either (being 3ML in a doomed kickass sworn bros trio never fails to suck royally for the man and his survival onscreen rate!), but he's got plenty of screentime at least. Must be a compensation for no loving wifey in sight.

I will also continue watching Eternal Brotherhood for LYN but most likely with the help of FFWD button for certain characters. I do like the brotherhood story so far.

2

@jillian oh, absolutely, Ying was a rarest treasure! They could've just cut this girl's screentime... significantly to a reasonable level. Guess that's just not how being Main Female Lead works tho, even in a story that's hardly about female characters or romance.

What it says about a drama this short when majority of people only watch it in FF? *evil grin*

9TAILEDVIXEN'S WEEKLY ROUND-UP (INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY EDITION):

1. Happy International Women's Day to all Beanies who are women and girls!

THIS WEEK IN KOREAN WOMEN'S NEWS:

(a) North Korean women are now the breadwinners – and shifting this deeply patriarchal society towards a matriarchy

North Korea is a deeply patriarchal society, and women have traditionally been defined by two words: mother and wife. But when famine hit the country in the 1990s, it was left to women to try to earn money to feed their families. And the state, obsessed with controlling the lives of men, mainly ignored that many women began working [...] selling what they could to supplement the meagre wages of their husbands’ factory jobs.

With this shift, it became a whole new lexicon that was derogatory around men, because the economic power had shifted. Women are the breadwinners in a very tight economic times, and men were another mouth to feed.

Korean women are choosing to focus on their careers and completely forego motherhood. As such [...] For a growing number of Korean men, the place to find a wife isn’t in their home country of Korea but in Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam. It’s become such a booming business that weddings are held barely 24 hours after the couple first meets.

2. And Not-So-Happy Tax Season to Everyone

This week is all about finance stuff for me - preparation for tax filing (Can we all do the "Yuck!" face together? Thank you), paying bills etc.

Paying bills was momentarily painful... but the extended torture of tax filing prep means I have to repeatedly remind myself while I am laboriously searching for receipts for tax deductible items and toting up earnings while praying I don't land in the next tax bracket that it could be worse - I could be a U.S.-ian dealing with the labyrinthian U.S. IRS tax filing system.

Happy Fridays everyone!

I just finished watching My Name is Loh Ki-wan a moment ago; and while I think there are many violent scenes of many kinds, the movie was delicately done and the shots are powerful. Song Jeong-ki is at his best in this one. There is one particular scene of his that really shook me hard. He is nothing short of brilliance.

Now here is another thing I discovered: The FL is just as FABULOUS as SJK is. She just ROCKS the role, and she is just a feast to the eye. I had to google who she is and discovered that her name is Choi Sung-eun. I also realized that this is the same person that played the FL in one of my most hated dramas named The Sound of Magic! I especially DISLIKED the FL in that drama, and tbh that made me dislike the actress who played that character, too. That's why this came as a shock for me to discover that the fabulous FL in MNILKW is played by the same actress who played the FL in TSoMG.

You can't really judge an actor/ an actress by some projects, can you?

Really, she is just FABULOUS in My Name is Loh Ki-wan. Stunningly beautiful, and utterly devastated.

Brilliance.

I'd hate to say this, but even though SJK is brilliant in this role, and his character is supposed to shine the brightest as the name of his character is also the name of the show, the FL ends up stealing it from him for me.

And I only wonder how SK has so many great actors and actresses...

There is a Korean cultural phenomenon that I just don't understand. And maybe also in the world. Why are famous actors, singers, popular figures persecuted for having a relationship???
Is the average everyday person so delusional in thinking their favorite person is in love with them. Any sane person is going to know that these romances in shows are fake- and if they aren't then yay for that relationship!!
I can't imagine a lonelier life that having to hide your relationship until your in your 40's.
I'm referencing especially the newly announced relationship between aesps's Karina and our handsome Lee Jae Wook.
https://www.soompi.com/article/1646661wpp/aespas-karina-apologizes-to-fans-in-heartfelt-letter-following-dating-news
The fact she had to write a letter of apology to keep her fans loyal and happy is sickening to me in this day and age. Taylor Swift has recently been in a relationship and I would think if anything it has increased her exposure and popularity.
Is it worse for Music stars than Drama??
Anyway this is my rant of the week. I felt this was the best forum to talk about it. Thanks for listening.

I think the formula can be distilled to:

Fan vicarious fantasy star availability x judgmental cancel culture = fan reaction to celebrity dating

Required fields are marked *

The idol system is very unique. They don't sell song only but a fantasy that works with fan calls, app like weverse or bubble, fansign, collecting photo card. The more you buys albums, the more you have access to this kind of things, etc.

Fans spend a lot of money to vote for TV shows, buy albums (because there often are different version of the album), merch., etc.

Agencies need their idol to give the impression they're here only for the fans.

Is it toxic? Completely! But it's why idols dating always is a "scandal".

It’s a 2-fold:

1. It’s definitely the delusional fantasy and that a Korean celeb/idol is the Fans and the Fans forever. Where this thought process stems from, I have no idea

2. There’s also the thought process—entitlement of the fans, really—which is applied more for the Kpop idol than a Korean actor/actress:
An idol’s career is built solely on crazy fan base support, and therefore, whenever they do something in life that isn’t solely for the benefit of their idol career— i.e. Like have a personal life and live like a human being and not like a content creating robot or a machine— then the fans get angry and their entitlement peaks it’s head out. It’s really selfish thinking, imho, as it takes the objectification of a person—the celeb idol— to a whole other level, and also treats the celeb idol only as a product and not a human being. Entitled fans don’t think past the point of themselves giving support to their celeb idols in their buying of merch and concert tickets. In reality, even before an idol celeb makes his/her/their debut, they put years and years and years into training, prepping, sweat, tears, and most likely other stuff just so they can pursue a career of being a celeb (singer, actor, actress, etc.)— all of which is effort the celebs put in THEMSELVES even before having any fans and any achievements in their careers. Their training years before their debut is a formidable achievement in and of itself. Yet, today’s Korean celebrity idol culture completely writes that off and the “fans” don’t even know nor care about that aspect, all they care about is what they see and what they put into their “support” for the celeb by throwing money into the materialistic aspect of it all.

/end rant

Wow! Fascinating. So basically they know when they sign up for it all what they are getting into. Sounds like a 2 edge sword- they train for years to be popular but when they are popular they loose control of their lives. This now helps a few dramas I have watched make more sense like Shooting Star and Oh My Venus

1

Required fields are marked *

I think to an extent, they know what they are signing up for when it comes to celebrity-hood— regardless of where in the world it is, once you’ve become famous, it means you’re a public figure and things will become difficult to keep private— but at the same time, it doesn’t warrant toxicity and it doesn’t mean that total control over one’s life should be completely surrendered to the audience. I’ve seen celebs—Korean celebs, even— wherein they have been able to keep their private lives under wraps and have been able to avoid being subjected to such toxicity. It’s a choice whether or not a person (in this case, it’s the K-Netz) chooses to be toxic/mean or to be kind. There’s always a choice. I think a lot of it also has to do with the evolving culture:
Cancel culture has always been existent in Korea in one way or another, it’s just been named differently— it’s just how South Korean society is, because their culture is very heavily based on keeping up appearances. 20 years ago, cancel culture in Korea wasn’t as bad as it is now, and wasn’t as selective as it is now,
E.g. Very well loved and reknown Korean actress Son Ye Jin and renown Korean actor Hyun Bin received only love, from what I read online, about their dating & succeeding wedding news

I don't know old she is but man, when I first saw that she apologized, all I could think was that was so dumb. Maybe for the idol life that was a good choice but from my perspective, it was so dumb to apologize when you've done nothing wrong. I liked her boyfriend's approach of saying he would just sue malicious commenters.

Celebrities need to get firm with these entitled fans.

That being said, I don't think ANYTHING good comes from publicly announcing relationships. Celebrities should just be like "none of your business" and go about their lives. If they're caught on dates, they should just be like "and?" and not answer anything questions and comments about it . Once upon a time some American actor, I don't remember who, said they don't like talking about themselves or their relationships because it ruins the illusion and mystique of the actor. If you don't know about them on a real level, it's easier to just see them as their characters and only know them as their characters. I think there's alot of truth to that.

For me, I can sometimes be affected by knowing a couple is/was dating during a production and I think about that as I'm watching the project. Like Mr & Mrs Smith. I think alot of people talked about the possible/likely cheating between Brad and Angelina more so than just the movie. Descendants of the Sun, even though the Song Song couple ended years ago and everyone involved has moved on, folks were still mad that a kiss between them from the show was featured in some anniversary/year end clip package like a year or two ago because of the real life relationship & its messy end.
Then there was the news of some Korean news anchor or something who apologized for divorcing her husband and it's like why? Why do you need to apologize and be shamed for divorcing when it has NOTHING to do with the public?

FYI, Karina and Lee Jae-wook did not willingly announce their relationship. Dispatch revealed it only a month after they started dating because they’re pieces of shit.

When she didn’t say anything her “fans” were all, “She’s so shameless, she’s not even willing to acknowledge that she’s dating all while not apologizing to her fans” and then when she apologized that turned into “She’s making her fans look like fools, why is she apologizing?”. There was literally no way for her to win.

Karina is 23 goddamn years old!

Can’t believe she is that young. He is only 25. You know this is basically a “ first love” type situation. Look how much people are paying to see 1 concert for Taylor Swift.

Required fields are marked *

It baffles me as well. Normally I don't even follow this kind of stuff but the other day I opened cnn.com (cnn.com!!!) and there's an article about Karina having to make a public apology to her fans for dating LJW. The article also included snippets from various fan responses, some of which were supportive, and others that were obscenely stupid and, frankly, insane, insisting that she must immediately break up with LJW to show that she's truly sorry for the supposedly cardinal sin of having a boyfriend and trying to live a life outside of her work.

If we boil this down, these "fans" are attempting to emotionally blackmail her (threatening to stop supporting her or her work) unless and until she decides that all she needs in her life are her fans--a bunch of strangers, most of whom she'll never even meet or know in any substantive way. In order for those fans to maintain their parasocial relationship with her, she cannot have a real romantic relationship like every other 20-something in the universe. Or if she does, she'll have to hide and lie about it, and live with the stress of constantly covering her tracks.

Any reasonable person would find this unacceptable at best and psycho at worst, and yet Korean celebrity culture normalizes this type of behavior for reasons I cannot fathom. I guess it comes down to money, but the entertainment industry makes absolutely absurd amounts of cash, to the point where they can certainly afford, especially in the short-term, to let these fans rage and then follow through on their threatened boycotts. I truly do not get this at all. She should have never, ever been pressured to write that apology in the first place. You're right: it's sickening.

I vote for Psycho!!
I have watched enough shows to get how the family pressure and cultural pressure works and affects relationships. But you would wonder if this might be what starts to influence a change.
The population crisis is a great example of young adults not caring what their families or parents want. They no longer even want any children for financial or personal reasons.
Until the entertainment group as a whole stops reacting to these threats, psycho things will keep happening.

I haven't commented much at Viki but a couple comments of mine were posted briefly and then sapped and disappeared. Both might have been considered slightly critical.
In one I began by thanking Viki for licensing a drama. It was a drama from one of the Kocowa big thee (SBS, KBS and MBC). My memory fails which one. I stated that I hoped the drama would be subbed by a Viki subbing team rather than getting the subs from Kocowa. That was it. The comment appeared briefly and then was gone. The only thing I could think of was that perhaps Viki though the Kocowa overlords would be offended. I don’t know. (Lol I didn’t think it was all that bad.)

Post 9 (Episodes 17-18): jls943 – 09-10 May
Post 10 (Episodes 19-20): Cera – 16-17 May

In a few countries, it's available on Amazon Prime. In the US, it's on Viki (premium).
If this is your first time watching it, I suggest you binge-watch it because this series comes off better with it. Also, while there is a beautiful romance, it's a forbidden kind. To be honest, this is not supposed to be a romance drama at all (don't go on the description; the OBY marketing team should have been fired), and its slow-burn romance is set on the slowest burner on its lowest setting in the history of sagueks.
Hoping to see some of you there, beanies.

Hi! I put a post about this on my fan wall, but I would also like to promote Robin Ha's work here. Robin Ha is an artist my boyfriend discovered for me. He bought me her graphic novel cookbook, Cook Korean! which I utterly love. I love to read cookbooks and watch cooking video content for fun. If you haven't had a chance to read that, check it out of the library and see what you think! I love the way she contextualized the recipes.

Anyway, Robin Ha has a new graphic novel out this month called The Fox Maidens. It's a gumiho legend based story, set in the Joseon period. Anyway, I thought the book was a great complement to all the sageuks with cross dressing, all the gumiho stories, and so forth. Here the gumiho is a terrifying monster and the sexism and extreme class stratification of Korean society is pretty explicit.

(I just realized she has another book I haven't read yet! I'm going to fix that right now.)

One thing I hate/strongly dislike about the secrets keeping trope is the person getting mad about being left out of the loop and then getting mad when they're in the loop. In many cases that I've seen, person A has a life changing/life affecting secret and the more people know about it, the more danger it is or the harder it is to maintain. It's quite a burden and they don't want other people to have to shoulder that. Person B knows or suspects they're being lied to or kept out of the secret and they get angry (which is understandable because who likes being lied to right) but when they're told there's a reason they can't be included or told the truth, they get more offended. Fast forward to them finding out the secret somehow and they freak out. It's stressful and now their life is in danger and they're mad at Person A for ever getting involved with them in the first place.

Ah, the secret keeping trope. It's complicated haha

What are people supposed to do?

When are people no longer considered rookies? During Love Song for Illusion, it was mentioned that the leads were green and rookies yet Park Jihoon has acted as a child and he's been in a few dramas before he was this project. He was even the lead actor 2 or 3 times before LSFI and even won an award for Weak Hero Class 1. He is young though; I think he's only 24 and I'm wondering if that's why he's considered a green rookie.

Lee Joon Gi got his big break at 24 with the king and the clown but I think he was still considered a rookie even though he had been doing small roles here and there before that but after the success and popularity boost, he got lead roles. So was he no longer considered a rookie?

Lee Seung Gi has only, that I've seen, referred to his rookie days as when he was preparing for his music debut. He got started with the sitcom Non Stop 5 (I think it was a sitcom) and then he did a supporting role and then he did lead roles. Granted, the level of success for his first lead role was surprising and unexpected but still, was he considered a rookie actor?

This was a genuine question. Can someone tell me when korean entertainers aren't considered rookies.

So from my understanding it's quite complicated. First of all, it depends on what kind of projects an actor does - if someone, for example, acts for a few years, but ONLY in web-dramas/TV dramas/streaming dramas/movies and then ventures into another format, then that actor would be considered a rookie once again. And would be perfectly eligible for Rookie Actor awards in that particular format as well.

What kind of roles they do is also important - when someone breaks out from tiny supporting roles into first/second leads/main antagonists, it's always a big deal. Like with your LJG example - he was basically an extra in some sitcom, then 3ML (or less) lead in a few movies barely anyone watched (well, I did... but that's another story lol), so when he got main role in TKATC (and a titular one at that!), he was by all standards seen as a rookie actor despite being in that field for 3+ years already.

Seniority is also a thing - pairing up an actor with some, albeit small, experience and a veteran actor in one project may very well result in former being regularly called a rookie on set/in promo interviews etc.

That's about actors. Kpop idols are only eligible to get rookie awards during the year they debuted (or when they re-debuted in sub-unit/solo), then for the next year or two they can be referred as rookies, especially if they didn't have many comebacks during that period, but it's less official already. 3+ years is usually the time when you lose the rookie badge for good. After "surviving" first contract renewal (usually 5 years nowadays) idol can confidently call themselves a veteran, or at least a senior with some weight in industry - even if that weight is only useful for intimidating rookies at group events lol.

Not sure what's the deal with PJH, but perhaps just not many people are aware he's a former child actor and only know about his idol roots? Lack of research even among supposedly professional media in k-ent is nothing new, sadly. The utter nonsense I've read about my faves from "credible sources" during last 13 years, omg...

I just came across an old DB post from 2014 saying that Lee Seung-Gi was about to be cast as the ML in Kill Me, Heal Me. Nothing against LSG, but I can't see him pulling off the role of a chaebol with associative identity disorder who has seven distinct personalities. Thank goodness the part went to Ji Sung. He gave a brilliant performance... or should I say performances?

There's a long list of iconic roles that were initially supposed to go to a different actor, including:
Amy Schumer as Barbie (Margot Robbie)
John Travolta as Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks)
Tom Cruise as Edward Scissorhands (Johnny Depp)
Al Pacino as Han Solo in Star Wars (Harrison Ford)
Shirley Temple as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (Judy Garland)

I don't remember when Kill Me Heal Me came out but I agree it's a good thing because Seung Gi likely couldn't pull off that role at that time.

He was also supposed to play Iljimae in Moon River but pulled out and was replaced by Jung Il Woo. Again, I think this was an example of things working out for the best cause I don't know if he could've pulled it off at that point. It probably would've been successful anyway due his popularity at the time but *actually* pulling off the character? I don't know. I could definitely be wrong and he could've done a good job with it.

And then we still got him in a sageuk a few years later anyway and it worked for him! Haha

I was gonna write this on my fan wall but alas it got cut off. I seriously don't know people use it by copy and pasting. I did that same thing and it gets cut off.

Anyhoo, Lee Joon Gi.
He has played so many characters was effed up fates.
- amnesiac who becomes the right hand of the man who killed his parents AND he unknowingly had a relationship with the man's daughter
-orphan whose mother ended herself on his birthday; threatened into being a fall guy; falsely accused of murder while also having a target on his back
-guy ostacized and bullied for being different; framed for murder; takes a shot to the head.

Of all the projects I've seen so far, I think I still like Flower of Evil most. I think it has all the elements that he's good at and known for (physicality and extreme emotion) but the family dynamic is also good, the female lead is good, smart, and empathetic, the stort is good. It just all works in my opinion. The only thing I've never understood is why Baek Hee Soo's parents had him use their son's identity in the first place but I guess chalk it up to the story needs to happen.

Ah, my heart hurts for his characters but he plays them so well haha
