In researching Joseon Period Hyangbang culture, I came across this trivia:

What are the seven sins of Joseon?

Women had to obey their husbands and in-laws and had no right to apply for a divorce. Men could divorce their wives based on the chilgeojiak (칠거지악), the "seven sins": disobedience towards in-laws, inability to bear a son, adultery, jealousy, poor DNA, talkativeness and coin collecting.

I think women in Joseon weren't allowed to legally own/inherit things, so maybe it was seen as a sign of secretly planning to become independent from her family aka rebellious intentions? Going against customs for sure.

this makes sense!

In KD’s at least, Joseon ‘currency’’ is always depicted as coins with or without central holes or in the chunky gold and silver turtles, etc so coins have been largely a stand in for money. I wonder whether this was an accurate or inaccurate depiction?
And, the reasoning, as Gikata said.

We discussed this, and it was mentioned when JOSEON ATTORNEY and MY DEAREST were airing. Women's rights went to hell in Joseon.

So I guess inability to bear a son = poor DNA? Surely they didn't know what DNA meant.

I assume that meant "blood lines," which probably includes personality traits, family status, etc.

I guess that makes sense. Its scary how the world was just a few hundred of years ago.

5

Yep, I think it was used to divorce a wive whose family for some reason stopped being desirable in-laws to her husband/his own clan. Very business-like, huh?

3

@cera: It is still scary for many women who are oppressed by the extremes of patriarchal cultures. For them, it is extreme Joseon but in different cultural and religious guises.

1

You are so right @DncingEmma even today many women worldwide are oppressed and repressed insidiously and outwardly.

Poor DNA here means poor health that was assumed to be carried over from her maternal family side (basically blaming her poor health on her family).
According to Han Hee Soo, Professor, Dept. of Korean History, Sookmyung Women’s University wrote in her publication in Insternational journal: Women’s Life during the Chosŏn Dynasty

Divorce during the Chosŏn dynasty was usually governed under the socalled “seven sins” for wives contained in the Ta Ming Lu (大明律 The
Great Ming Code) and by the sambulgŏ (三不去 three instances in which
a husband could not divorce his wife). The seven sins for women were:
disobeying one’s parents-in-law; failure to produce a male heir; adultery;
excessive jealousy towards other women in the household; serious
disease; stealing; and talking excessively.

However, contrary to the belief, divorce was not easy for the man too, especially if the woman's family objected. The three instances where the husband could not divorce were broad and vague as well.
In accordance with the
sambulgŏ, the government identified three instances under which a man
could not divorce his wife: when the wife had no household of her own to
return to; the woman had duly carried out the required three year
mourning period for her parents-in-law; and when the status of the family
had been upgraded as a result of the wife’s proper conduct of her roles.
Moreover, the state refused to allow a man to divorce his wife and replace
her with a concubine if the two had been through difficult times together.
The government also refused to accept a divorce for what they deemed
unreasonable grounds, even going as far as punishing the man in such
cases, in order to protect the status of the principle wife.
___

In practice though, powerful men got away with a lot.

Exactly. What a horrifying world. No wonder the Korean misogynists think Feminism is the evil incarnate. That world is their role model and what they wish would still be the touchstone.

You got it wrong. Misogynists hate all women, not just feminists. I think that many people, including myself, think that RADICAL FEMINISIM and what they propose is evil incarnate. Not feminism. It's a big diference. You are confusing the terms. And calling people misogynists that opose the radical part of feminists is wrong.

2

@kodra tell me what a radical feminist is

1

@dncingemma I have been researching a lot about this era and it's very interesting to note that the worst they endured was around 18th and 19th century, when most of the planet creaked under the immense restrictions posed on women world wide, until the two wars happened, causing the dynamcs to change in many countries, including Southeast Asia, and the societal needs forced the women to slice the fabric wide open and rub shoulders with the men.
Coming back to Joseon, it was mostly the top 10% - the Yangban population - that suffered the most. A lot of these were not applicable to the commoners and they led a lot more unrestricted life, though often it didn't much because they struggled for survival for most part anyway.

3

@mdiary I don't claim to know the end all answer for what radical feminism is, so I'll lead with that.

I do see a distinct difference however between feminism (the desire for men and women to be treated equally) and some extreme feminist movements in social media or just plain media today. The latter for me is characterized by a need to free women from existing societal structures like marriage to abolish the patriarchy, belittle the role of man and father or focus almost on a "female superiority" for the sake of leveling the playing field between men and women. I don't agree with messages like that I come across in media.

https://www.simplypsychology.org/radical-feminism.html

I found an article in a quick Google search that may shed additional insight. I liked that it shows that while it's still a feminist movement and I agree with the ideas of not objectifying women, helping save women from abusive situations etc. I don't think the society we live in and structures like the family or men's roles need to be torn down in order to create a more just or equal society. If anything I wish we'd spend more time on supporting healthy images of fatherhood and masculinity in the media and building up the good in both sexes.

4

@Minnie: Thanks. I don’t claim to be an expert on that era. However experts highlight that the consequences arising from those restrictions permeated the broader society and influenced the views about and treatment of all women, some persisting to current day (lowest OECD pay parity, violence against women, etc).

@mdiary
I will, unfortunately I have a busy weekend and I will return with a more detailed answer on Tuesday.

@cozybooks To be clear, I know what "radical feminism" is. I just wanted to hear what Kodra thinks of as "radical feminism".

The fact is that "feminism" is still a dirty word in Korea in many circles, and trying to argue that anyone who is anti-feminist is only against "radical feminism" is simply not true and that is not what was being discussed in the above conversation. ANY discussion on women's rights and women's liberation is seen as threatening to a certain not-insignificant subset of men, especially in Korea. These same men will try to paint feminism in broad strokes and insist that "radical feminism" is the standard among Korean feminists and insinuate that this feminism somehow poses a real, tangible danger to politics and men AND women.

But I'll just say that even "radical feminism" only exists because women have been second-class citizens throughout all of human history, and yes, the response to that is sometimes taken to a "radical" degree. But in my opinion and from what I observed, it is largely a coping mechanism. No radical feminists are going to try to stage a coup and overthrow the patriarchy in violent revolution any time soon.

Calling a response to literally millennia of oppression "evil incarnate" seems to me to be ignoring the fact that this "radical feminism" gained traction in Korea because of very real and specific cases of women being murdered by men because of their hatred and the police and other authorities refusing to call anti-women violence what it is: a hate crime. Even "radical feminists" are not going on massive violent rampages against men. But men use violence against women all the time.

That, to me, seems to be the real evil incarnate.

Also, to be clear, I am not ignoring WOMAD, Korean TERFdom, or the (very, very) few crimes that might be linked to those groups. I just think the outcry against "radical feminism" is far, far disproportionate to any threat it actually poses to society and is often used to dismiss any discussion of women's rights and the extremely valid anger that women have towards the patriarchy and, yes, many men.

3

@mdiary: Thank you for your answer. I wholeheartedly agree.

Weather - warm warm warm - not so cold nights n early mornings. Jan - Feb hot - Can march be - oh ho

Sakura is blossming earlier - warm warm warm - pretty soft weather - or can say dry warm months compared to average temp. - oh ho ho - troubles a lot.

Clouds - thunders - yes yes - lack of snow is already trouble. so good storm is needed - if no avg. rain then leave alone summer, spring itself will bring huge huge trouble.

Then you are expecting this time around powerful summer as well as powerful summer rain season - monsoon gonna be extra powerful - so floods are expected - huge huge rain in few hours is what be the most of the popcorn time.

hug rain per hour - but not a cloud burst.

huge rain short time - no helpful to anyone - as most water will go back to river to ocean itself.

this is volatile weather is not what benefits anyone.

Overall - I stand with mother earth and mother nature. I'll cheer everything and am cheering everything.

donut is so much fun - i'm laughing an enjoying this comedy drama - keep doing that.

tradaeu is not a decent leader and does lot of haha than doing actual work - don't be yes boy.

zelo boy has not muc to serve on table either.

moody is just too moody - he can give lessons to all his brothers how to control everything n then act as a democratic guy.

Rest is same as usual - more protests more chaos more fun all around.

Farmers protests - they happen every year - nothing new, nothing special. they happen everywhere. every govt gives subsidies - because farming is one heck of a loss making business but its main purpose is too keep nation food sufficient - that's why govts pay subsidies.

European protests in 2024 are for European union elections - i've talked about them before. right time playing. main stream media not much playing it which is also the main source for most audience aka voters and many of those privileges class.

Farming isn't some sitting job in a air conditioned room. here investment is high, return is less, risks are way more high and then you have the kind of weather system build up every season. then u hv to follow dozen laws n this n that,

European farmers have big farm lands and good tech tools available, even then they face so much

now think about Asian farmers - who has like 10 times more troubles to follow and they mostly depend upon good rains for good harvest.

privileges class who go all gaga over plastic faces can't understand the hardwork here. hardwork that mostly brings heartache.

on twitter there are some positing videos and for that information i would like to tell - i stand with farmers all along.

Now that's a great prompt, ty!

I'd personally LOVE to change my actual melo-thriller-horror daily life to a stylish adult romance with a hot as hell ML, many gorgeous city night scenes (I'm particularly fond of bridges and street lamps as aesthetics) and some bedroomy retro rock ballad as BGM (Scorpion's "Obsession" will do). Don't wanna work much though - leads in this genre rarely do anyway, being busy with far more interesting things, so let's skip to the "after work" content right away^^

No matter the genre of drama that I'm "really" starring in, the only music that'll be playing is Global Pop. Preferably in a language I don't know very well so that I don't have to listen to the silly lyrics, and can focus on the ebbs-and-flows of the rhythm in the melody and bass line.

I'm literally a, "It's got a good beat and I can dance to it" type of music-lover.

PS: Try "Love Girl" or "Loner" by CNBlue to hear what I mean in the best way. Kang Min-hyuk...GAH. Drums can be melody too.

I think the only way I've never commuted to a job IRL is by ferryboat. I've driven, taken the bus or subway, biked or walked to different jobs, and of course worked from home a lot. We have public transport ferries here and I think it's kind of a cool image, right? If I'm going to be a main character I want to be main character age, though I'm really supporting character/mom age. So let's imagine the younger, slimmer, but still kinda spacey and bespectacled me on the ferry, maybe looking back at the city? (What the heck is the job? Maybe park ranger?) In the background, Blossom Dearie singing "Moonlight Saving Time."

The screen shows the clock with the the time (6:40) and a banner on the screen "Work starts: 8:00AM". It proceeds to follow my morning routine - slapping my phone to turn off my first alarm, and then either rolling groggily or bolting out of bed (groggily) to the bathroom. I'd be nodding off while brushing teeth because it would be hard to portray me nodding off on the floor of my shower appropriately. When my third alarm goes off I finally start shaking myself awake and finish getting ready for the day.

The banner in the bottom corner of the screen starts getting a bit bigger and turns colors to red as I go over my time to where I'd be a bit late. I make myself some avocado toast and head down to the car, whereupon I drive to work (somewhat quickly) to a Seventeen song - something upbeat, "Aju Nice!" seems fitting at first glance.

Mine would be walking down the narrow lanes of Florence (Milan would do to), hopping in to a small Mom and Pop store to grab some mouthwatering pastries, and then walk to the art gallery I own and curate (irl I have no clue about art but hey this is K-drama opening scene :D). A tightrope walk over Niagara Falls to work in a gift shop. The song would be Jackie Wilson's, 'Higher and Higher'.

I see this as a nightmare dream scene after a drunken goodbye team dinner, with the dreamer about to leave for Canada without a word to her boyfriend on grounds of noble idiocy.

Her rival in love, the spoilt and evil Chaebol daughter, lied about getting off with him, and how she can offer him so much more than our FL, his lowly first love, who decides to step aside for the sake of his happiness. She of course works in a crap job in the Chaebol daughter's department store, rearranging shoes and sticking labels on items that buyers can never adequately remove.

He will foil the plot and like Prince Charming, chase after her to Canada with one of the shoes. He knows she will be in disguise so he can only identify her by her feet and her lovely voice when she finally says, "I do" to him. Unfortunately for @gikataa he is played by PHS, and it's the last you will see of him before he disappears with me.

Reading your comment made me think of a drama plot I desperately need made now.

It centers on a ski rental shop, with the female lead working there and commuting by snowmobile. She and the male lead (either a rich guy who goes skiing all the time or an Olympic skiier..) cross paths around the slopes as she works and he skiis. Cue romance across imagined boundaries with meet cute scenes as he helps out with her kiddi-learn-to-ski lessons that she teaches, organizes the ski shop, confronts upset customers and enjoys a free afternoon on the slopes. They can even crash into each other. Ha. I think this would be a super cute drama.

I think if he's rich he should also be annoying, turning up when she's busy, not taking her commitment to her job seriously, winding up the customers, assuming she'll drop everything whenever he wants her to. All this before she finally tames him to behave the way you write him.

Also, instead of noble idiocy separating them a few eps from the end, there can be an avalanche, with him buried on the slopes. She can spot him with binoculars because like all good ski-ers, he flailed his arms over and over as the snow engulfed him, creating a breathing space in the bubble of snow.

Then, in an act of ingenuity, she tightrope walks with him on her shoulders, on a rope between the tree under which he was trapped, to the Rocky Outcrop of Safety (ensuring she threw a grappling hook with the rope attached from the rock to the tree and then ziplined down it to get to him first).

1

Oh my gosh the tightrope walking scene. The zip line. Yessss

And they should have a kiss where they were drinking hot cocoa and she had cream on her upper lip and he decided to just kiss it away instead of wiping it away. After they've already started dating, of course, if it's going to be an enemies to lovers plot.

I got an ADHD diagnosis from my psychotherapist, an LICSW, which doesn't mean anything to anyone else. I think it's been at least five or six years I've been casting around, trying to figure out what to do with this information. It explains so much, maybe everything, about my struggles as a person.

Yet no one else has ever had a problem with *my* ADHD. I excelled in school and I'm good at a lot of different kinds of work, though I've also had a lot of trouble with jobs and career. I think the biggest misconception that psychologists have about ADHD is that it's a deficit of attention. It's a SURPLUS of attention! It's why you and I are coming into contact here, on this board, right? Since I could never persuade my insurance to pay for a neuropsych exam, I base my perception of this on my kid's neuropsych exam.

We are lucky to live in places with ease of access to medical treatment but still it feels as if we cannot get proper treatment. I do hope you find a doctor who is able to help you find the treatment which works for you.

Happy first day of spring, Beanies! Winter was rough and I cannot be happier to finally see the end of it. Coincidentally it's also time to pay some of my musical debts to yall. This particular entry was supposed to be dedicated to Valentine's Day thematically, but things happened and I've missed the timing, sadly. But today isn't a bad date to drop it either – I mean, it IS spring! A cat month! So if I don't drop the playlist politely titled “Bedroom voice” now, when will be the better time? Doubt I need to explain the theme in detail – both general politeness and site's filter would surely mind if I start elaborating, trust me))) Let's just say that LYN's voice at its full huskiness does things. And damn, does it do them strongly!

Remember at the beginning of this series I told you an infuriating story about him being eliminated from some music show when he just debuted? Well, I dug deeper into issue and found out wtf happened back then – turns out that program had a dumb rule about judges and viewers nominating different contestants respectively, but of course only the former had a final say in who goes into next round. Which was exactly the case – audience loved him, but judges pushed the other team *rolls eyes* Talk about fan baiting. Their loss, but thankfully we can still enjoy his fiery introduction performance from there. He was still such a baby, awww!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfKUq-rABYA

And post-elimination farewell song too. The raw emotions he poured into it, wow! Quite the door kicking exit, if you ask me))) I'm giving you time stamped link, but if you're into watching the baby boy ugly crying over “failing his fans expectations” (as if, silly him!), just play the whole video:
https://youtu.be/W_p_jr_wD30?si=SHvNnzQhmrXSuAMQ&t=390

Enough of sad stuff for now – it's supposed to be horny fun music night, right? This is him singing some popular song on what I assume is a New Year concert not so long after that fiasco. Giving up is clearly not in his vocabulary))) I'm not very crazy about this melody, but his voice! And for once his early career outfit doesn't hurt my eyes^^
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6S-Y-5P7so

Few months before, livestream version with a slightly clearer sound – there's lyrics translation in comments btw:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uBKBwq4ciI

While we're on the topic of his stream covers, let's explore a bit the previously untouched subject – his predebut street performances. I'll make a separate entry (or few) consisting of just those later, but for now there's a few hottest sounding ones. Don't ask what's going on with these furniture?toy? animals, I have no idea either. But his shirt is a riot as always)))

This is a love song, from what I can hear, so fits our theme, right?

I listened to this an unhealthy amount of times - my neighbors probably know the lyrics by heart despite none of them speaking Chinese *chuckles in fake regret*:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jzQVY63_HU

Yet another serenade. Sounds downright desperate – I love the man in a full begging mode, he mastered the art clearly:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TN_f-b1yZLI

Not sure if video's many views are mainly attributed to the song or rare occasion of him showing some collarbone (not stitching his collar deadly shut is already peak fanservice from this Victorian dude!), but either way, thanks for the meal, chief)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mLEVoWLUOg

In case if you ever wondered how he'd pronounce “oh honey”))) Comment about a previously empty street gathering a smitten crowd once he starts singing cracks me up – no lies detected lol:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaItF2vJ2gg

Now truly legendary stuff – the very same cover that made him go insanely viral on c-web. He has MANY renditions of this song, I'll only give a few, really. The OG performance:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IVW86Y_Z-Y

Stage live from the platform he went viral on – he made THEM big too so they held him A CONCERT in return:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PuuKbNI8-E

Artsy stage performance on TV finally. Interesting arrangement (wish I could say the same about his clothes):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAfio1LUaz0

And official studio version (it's also on Spotify if you wanna stream the hell out of it like I do daily):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NvQa6Xmr3Q

Something more playful for a change – one of his own. It's a riot too – jazzy, musical-like, borderline cabaret! Like an OST from a sexy Republican drama we never got (yet?). Studio version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuO2kKCo-5A

And TV performance (pls ignore his lame attempt at dancing – man's bound to have at least one flaw, right? Plus he makes up for it with his glorious camera flirting):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKyVrnS--lI

Back to official covers – he has (had?) a whole series of those called Listen.Ning and it's sooo precious, but this particular song takes the cake. It, to borrow cringy popular expression, altered my brain chemistry once and forever. Seriously advising to use headphones – both for a better experience and because he's freaking moaning through it, so you likely don't wanna people around to hear THAT^^ Studio version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTPJt_GnwcU

And stream live with subs – btw, it's called “Hope that you are well” (no, I'm light centuries away from well, but it was very sweet of him to ask!):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Hq73pCtla8

We'll wrap up here. Hope you had as much fun as I did. Till the next week!)))

@kiara, @jillian, @zindigo, @wapzy, @isagc, @wonhwa, @seeker – if I forgot anyone, pls correct me!^^

What kind of Beanie Commentator are you? A conversation on the Fan Wall piqued my interest...

🫘 Are you the type of Beanie who only comments on recaps for shows you've watched?
🫘 Are you the type of Beanie who comments on all the recaps whether or not you've watched the episodes? 🤣
🫘 Are you the type who likes to comment on the "Drama Casting & News" non-recap-based posts?
🫘 How about being a Beanie who comments on the "Meta" posts like "Treasure Hunt" and "Would You Rather?"
🫘 Do you stick to posting and commenting on the Fan Wall?
🫘 Is "Open Thread" your thing? Or how about "What We Were Watching?"
🫘 Or are you, like some of us (🤓) ready to comment anywhere that catches your interest on a daily basis?

How would you describe what calls you to post your comments?

I comment on the dramas I am watching, sometimes one I want to watch but it’s too scary/stress inducing so I am following via weecaps. I respond to the Meta posts that are of interest, Open thread as and when I have something to say or I am responding to another beanie’s comment on there and I usually comment on What We’re Watching most weeks.

I mostly like to comment on recaps because (obviously) I am here for Kdramas. I enjoy recollecting the watch experience through our DB recappers' funny and witty writing. If I drop the drama, I will no longer appear in that section.

The second section that I find interesting and may warrant a comment from me is the "Fanwall" or weekly discussion spaces like "WWW/Open Thread".

On rare ocassions, I engage in "meta chats" only if I feel the topic is bound to get hot like "Drama that everyone likes, but you did not' etc., Those are hotspots to find varied opinions.

I avoid new casts at all rates because I want to starting kdramas without any bias and be surprised.

I'm an "in the moment" poster on DB, except for my fan wall posts. Those I prepare in advance. But the rest of the time, I just come to DB to see what Beanies are chatting about and respond as I feel like it or have time to. (MBTI "P" 😜)

I don't tend to comment if I'm liking the drama and others are either 1) not enjoying it or 2) just not super invested in the drama.

I'd say I do comment anywhere that really catches my eye, though.

On a serious note, I'm something between a rabid alligator and a permanently drunk on poetry mead storyteller - once I find a topic I feel like biting into, I won't stop waxing essays about it until circumstances - or people tired of keeping the convo going forever - seriously kick me to shut up let it go.

I like to think that my sphere of interests is pretty big and diverse. All types of DB content is fine (except maybe long dropped short-lived celeb gossip "news", I have more than enough of that from other places). I rarely interact with topics about dramas/actors I don't watch though - one needs a solid basis to form an opinion worth sharing about something, and nope, other peoples' reviews is NOT that in my book.

At least 97% of the time I am commenting on a weecap, it is a show I’m watching. I tend not to want to weigh in on shows I haven’t seen, even if I’m following along with the weecaps the whole time. Exceptions are sometimes made for super good weecaps, or when I appreciate a weecapper sticking with a show even when it seems like no one else is watching.

Other than that I’m all over the place! I definitely comment on news, meta, open thread (though not consistently as Fridays are busy for me), WWW, drama chats, movie nights, the lot. I love commenting on others’ fan wall posts and will occasionally do my own posts too.

🫘 For shows I'm hesitant about watching, I may not read recaps but I read beanies' comments to see what people think about it.

🫘 I don't read Drama Casting & News because there're quite a few of them and by the time I've got to watch one, I would have forgotten which show is which.

🫘 If I come to "Would You Rather?", that'd be to see the votes and comments by other beanies. I rarely comment on "Treasure Hunt".

🫘 I read the main page as well as fan wall. Looking back, I've commented on fan wall more frequently than on the main page.

🫘 "Open Thread" and "What We Are Watching?" are my things to read but I don't often comment there. It's fun to go through "Open Thread" and see various topics beanies talk about.

🫘 I like posts of unexpected prompts like "Drama Chats" and probably "Cast Away" when beanies just spontaneously jump in with all sorts of (genius) ideas.

🫘 "How would you describe what calls you to post your comments?" -- This question is not easy to answer properly. Probably the most appropriate answer for me is "When I have something related directly or non-directly to Kdramas I would like to chat about with others"?!

NOTES FROM 9TAILEDVIXEN'S FINAL WEEK OF FEBRUARY:

1. I've started learning graphic design as part of developing new skills during my sabbatical. So far, so good - I've learned about layers and how to use them to make hilarious memes MWAHAHAHA!

2. Attended my first post-Lunar New Year Aerial Yoga class and surprisingly, I have progressed despite a 2-week break - I can now hang upside down from the silks without needing the instructor's help, I can now twist myself around the hammock to lock myself in, and my arms and core aren't immediately screaming after class (they did scream the next day).

I still need to work on my woeful flexibility but I'll just keep going at it. Hopefully at some point I'll be able to really stretch and split as needed.

3. I love baking but it's a darn relief to not be baking anything for the last 10 days after all the festive baking had been completed.

Maybe I'll bake a tart and a cheesecake next week...

4. This week in Korean Women's News:

(a) LE SSERAFIM’s Huh Yun Jin Caught in “Feminist Controversy” Over Book Choice

LE SSERAFIM appeared on MBC’s variety show Point of Omniscient Interfere and during the makeup segment, Huh Yun Jin’s appearance with a book in hand, “Breasts and Eggs” by Mieko Kawakami stirred debate among netizens, with some netizens arguing that Huh Yun Jin is a feminist because the book is written by a “feminist author.”

“Breasts and Eggs” deals with the themes of mother-daughter relationships, changes in the human body, and femininity. The book has been praised for its artistry and has won the Akutagawa Prize, Japan’s highest literary award.

https://zapzee.net/2024/02/28/le-sserafims-huh-yun-jin-caught-in-feminist-controversy-over-book-choice/

(b) South Korea’s fertility rate sinks to record low despite $270bn in incentives

South Korea’s demographic crisis has deepened with the release of data showing its birthrate – already the world’s lowest – fell to a new record low in 2023, despite billions of dollars in government schemes designed to persuade families to have more children.

But financial and other inducements are failing to convince couples who cite skyrocketing child-rearing costs and property prices, a lack of well-paid jobs and the country’s cut-throat education system as obstacles to having bigger families.

Experts have said that cultural factors are also responsible, including the difficulty working mothers have juggling their jobs with the expectation that they are mainly responsible for household chores and childcare.

Aerial Yoga is definitely fun. It's excellent resistance training since you're hauling your bodyweight up and down the silks/hammock. Caveat that I am still new to this and my flexibility is still horrible but the good news is that flexibility, core strength, arm strength etc can be improved as long as you're consistent.

Graphic design is interesting. I'm a very visual person in many ways so being able to work with pictures etc is fun!

And yeah - the Confucian cultures (China, Japan and Korea) are doing everything else but actually address the Patriarchy Elephant In The Room.

I'll tell you what's going to happen - they'll eventually be forced to resentfully and reluctantly concede to dealing with the issue of sexism, misogyny etc in their country and among their men and older generations until the birthrate situation is really and truly dire (as in at the point where there is almost no return).

These countries will then do a half-assed job of addressing the Confucian patriarchal roots of it all because it's all so deeply entrenched in the culture... and activists/advocates and the younger generations will have to keep dragging them kicking and screaming towards progress.

Or you know - the extreme solution is to out-wait these Patriarchal Dinosaurs since they can't live forever. The question is whether they and their generation will reach Unalive status before the birthrates of all 3 countries really hit rock bottom and it'll take half a century to get the population back to healthy levels.

In the Chinese diaspora as well, there are increasing numbers of women refusing to marry and have kids. It just doesn't make sense to volunteer to do this knowing that you'll basically end up having your career prospects destroyed and become an unpaid housekeeper and cook, personal assistant (to your husband), broodmare for continuing your husband's family line, childcare provider, and sex worker on demand. Not to mention dealing with not just one but TWO patriarchal/sexist/misogynistic families - your own and your in-laws.

Sounds harsh but 'tis still the truth until things really change and men do their fair share at home and don't steal women's labour.

Muffins are on the easier side of the baking jungle though. You just need a good recipe, right tools and - this is the most important step, really! - to ruin a few first batches to gain a detailed data of what time/temperature would be optimal for your oven specifically.

4
6
reply

Required fields are marked *

Fun little tidbit I learned when making muffins last week:

So the recipe I followed was for peanut butter banana muffins, but I didn’t have any peanut butter so I subbed a mix of tahini and sunflower seed butter. They were great and looked beautiful straight out of the oven, but I woke up the next morning to see that they turned GREEN! I was shocked and wondered if they somehow went bad overnight, but some quick googling made me realize that a chemical reaction between sunflower seed butter and baking soda results in a very vibrant green color.

So, if anyone is planning in baking something for St. Patrick’s Day… I suggest throwing in sunflower sees butter.

That's so fun!! If I ever get to the point in baking where I feel I can make substitutions like that, I'm totally trying it.

5

haha yeah.. it's the "a good recipe" bit that really gets me. I'm terrible at following recipes. In cooking, most of the time I feel like it still turns out just fine, but baking is so reliant on chemistry that not having the exact measurements, or leaving something out/swapping things out could break the recipe.

5
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Following the recipe/exact measurements is not my forte either, it just doesn't work with my intuitive style of cooking. I rarely make something completely inedible though - granted I'm not really into baking (because my old oven sucks).

6

@gikata heh I'm glad you're the same way. I probably could do just fine with most box mixes and successfully made pizza dough from scratch last week.. but I will never claim to be really "good" at baking until I can make like cheesecakes and pies and homemade breads etc.

1

The trickiest part of baking muffins is making sure you use the absolute minimum number of strokes with your wooden mixing spoon to get the batter just mixed. Anything more and the muffins will be tough due to the gluten forming from too much mixing.

There are ways to slightly mitigate that - I use buttermilk instead of milk. So it makes batter-stirring a tiny bit more forgiving. The buttermilk compensates for that as it keeps the muffin tender.

4

yum I love buttermilk, it adds so much flavor to baked goods and chicken!

also if you use gluten free muffin mix, you can stir as much as you like because it'll never get tough due to lack of glutens. yay

3

use a wire whisk to combine the liquids and flour... and remember not to overmix muffin batter... a few light stirs with whisk will keep the muffins tender. small lumps in the batter are actually ok.

My interested article of the week was makes me sad and tragic... about the K-Pop artists like BTS and Blackpink were no more on TikTok after it was all muted audio by UMG and the other non-UMG artists that collaborated with UMG.
https://www.koreaboo.com/news/umg-copyright-purge-tiktok-bts-blackpink/
So, I'm not happy about the UMG purge on TikTok, so I'm glad I never signed up to TikTok yet so I don't think if TikTok would probably shut down this or next year not only after the other labels would expire this year if all non-UMG (including Warner and Sony) and even indie labels would collapse the negotiating talks with licensing and would fail to renew but also TikTok was now a lot of controversies now including bullying issues at China, government bans this app on any devices, India completely ban TikTok due to war with China and even for those people including teens affected mental health. But, I also think YouTube Shorts and IG Reels would serve as the post-Tiktok short form video platforms soon if TikTok would be shutting down this or next year.

Question: how many dramas in a single genre can you watch before you feel the need to move on?

Companion question: When you've just finished/are about to finish a REAALLY good drama, do you look for a drama in a similar genre/style to follow it up with or something completely different?

7
27
reply

Required fields are marked *

I've noticed that I can see several sageuks in a row for weeks, or more than two sageuks at the same time.
The same with slice-of-life shows.

But I take more time between thrillers or melos, or pure comedies.

6
1

Required fields are marked *

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

If I finish a really good drama, I figure out why it was so good then either a) backtrack the work of the actor(s) other works or b) make a mental note of the actors/writers future works. There are some actors who are really good at picking a variety of good roles which lessen the possibility of drama duds. However, if an actor is basically type-cast in the same role or genre, I may pass (been there, seen that).

8
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I've definitely done this before - it's not as often that I'll binge watch an actor's projects back to back, but definitely with writers and directors. And then I just keep an ear to the ground for that actor writer or director in the future.

1

Required fields are marked *

I'm not "bored" by any genre and can watch same / similar type of dramas if the cast and crew interest me.

6
2

Required fields are marked *

I don't intentionally look for similar dramas but if it so happens, I won't give it a pass just because I watched something similar.

4
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's impressive. I feel like 2 or 3 is my limit, and then I start comparing them amongst each other too much and get disappointed in the drama I'm watching. If it's a REALLY good drama then I'll usually look for one more in a similar genre but not exactly the same. Then I have to move on and find something else.

Cop shows/thrillers are probably the only exception, I can watch 3-5 of those back to back and be just fine.

I'm also usually watching 3 shows at a time (at least) so it becomes a bit of a non issue since there's variation between the shows I'm watching. This is more for when I'm in between live watches and binging an older drama.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

The only thing I can say that about is sageuk. I love them, but I can't watch more than 2 at the same time (and prefer just 1 at a time tbh). I also need a break between them. Idk why as I'm usually watching fusion sageuk. Maybe it's because the themes are so common and they almost always include women struggling and being mistreated, even in the romcoms.

Same, but for different reasons - I struggle with the whispy bearded court intrigue even in a lighter fusion sageuk, so I'm usually a one and done there. I've actually been super impressed in the last few months that I've watched so many and finished them. My Dearest (live), Matchmakers (half and half), Knight Flower (live), and now Captivating the King (live). Oh, and Under the Queen's Umbrella (binge)! I've really been on a roll.

Fortunately those are are really good dramas! I've been right there with you in the last 6 months with all but UTQU, which I watched when it was originally released. I actually don't mind the political intrigue except that it's been getting really same same lately.

Right? I think there's just been a wave of sageuks that are really a step above the rest. And then someone (I don't remember who) posted the OST song for UtQU on the fan wall, and I loved the song do much I watched the show.

2

@cozybooks That was me who posted the video with the OST lol! So glad you liked it (and the show, which is one of my most favorites)

2

Lol seriously?? As I wrote my comment I was thinking "wouldn't it be funny if zindigo WAS that beanie?" The universe heard my wish ahahahaha

@cozybooks Love when stuff like that happens! 🤗

I prefer certain genres and will happily watch dramas in those dramas as long as the story, script, and acting are excellent.

However, I do need "palate cleansers" from time to time. So I might watch 2 Romance dramas followed by a Crime drama and then back to Romance dramas. Usually I make sure I have a good mix of dramas though so at any one point I'm watching what I like to watch.

I’ll be honest, I’m not toooo picky about genre. Comedy is my go-to, and I’ll watch nearly anything women-centric (as long as it isn’t fully makjang), but I will watch anything that is quality. I don’t tend to get tired of genres as much as I do by just… grating writing.

But quirky and comedic is where my heart lies and I could watch nonstop good quirky comedies until the end of time.

I think quirky comedies are the hidden loves for me- I never think it's what I love until I watch one. And then I realize all over again just how great the genre is and 3 or 4 dramas later I'm wondering why I ever took a break from them.

Once I finish a REAALLY grabbing drama, I need a bit of time and space (and sometimes a drink) to be able to watch ANYTHING else afterwards. If the ending left me not so happy, I always try to stick to something different for a change... but this rarely works, unfortunately)))

Ooh fascinating! I definitely feel the void, but I tend to start thinking around episode 13 or 14 (assuming I'm watching live) about how I'm going to fill the void. I take the week the enjoy the drama I'm finishing but also cast around and see if there's a similar drama that's already finished from years previous that I can start to keep the "excellent drama" feels going.

For example, I recently finished Marry My Husband and while it was airing, I looked up Na In Woo's previous dramas and started watching Longing For You at the same time. The drama was decent but his performance and/or role didn't impress me as much as his character in Marry My Husband did, so I was struggling to finish it. Now I'm watching Jinxed at First which also starred Na In Woo. I really like his character in this drama (re: fishmonger who is an outcast in his neighborhood) I find him charming and a lot more in his element therefore natural (as compared to playing a detective in Longing For You, you can tell he has no idea really how to be a cop and he just lacks the real world experience and maturity for such a role)

I tend to skip around between different genres (and countries), as I find watching too many similar shows in a row causes them to all blur together. I will say the biggest challenge after watching a REALLY good drama is finding something else engaging in any style.

6

Required fields are marked *

I like to have a mix of things going on. Back when I only binge-watched, I would switch genre after most dramas. I love to watch thrilling or angsty dramas, but sometimes I need a good cotton candy (sweet fluff) chaser. Now that I live-watch more, I still like to have a mixture of genres going on at once, partly just so that everything is distinct in my mind even though different dramas are happening in quick succession.

After a reaaaally good drama, I watch something different. I started this with my very first drama (CLOY) - after it was over, I wanted to keep watching but was nervous of not liking anything else as much, so I picked a sageuk to make sure it would be different enough not to be a direct comparison. And this is still the strategy I use now!

7

Required fields are marked *

I think your strategy (going for something completely different) is what I use if I can't find another drama that I'm confident will also be a hit to watch in the same genre. If possible I like watching two similar/same genre dramas (Gaus Electronics --> Diary of a Prosecutor). Not exactly the same genre, but both have elements of similarity in the premise if not genre. If I can't find something in the same genre then I'll switch genres completely but make sure it's another hit (ie. Under the Queen's Umbrella --> Extraordinary Attorney Woo).

I usually follow the actors' works. So if a drama made me interested in some actors, I'd check out their other works regardless of the genres.

On rare occasions, when I loved a show so much, I'd google other shows of similar theme. I think I found "Watcher" after looking for something similar to "Stranger".

I was watching a youtuber's coverage of the whole Lee Sun Gyun situation and they mentioned room salons. The way they described it was like Japanese hostess bars but it has its differences. When people were criticizing him, they often used the word "brothel"

The youtuber's description made me wonder, are these room salons like modern day version of gisaeng houses?

In sageuks, there seems to be different levels of gisaengs. There are those who do the physical aspects but then there are others who were profient in actually performing/entertaining such as with instruments or dancing or singing (from what I understand).

There apparently different levels and types of room salons and host(ess) clubs which made me wonder about this.

one of the things that surprised me was how his ultra exclusive club hired an ex convict as manager. If I were a big shot part of the 1%, I would expect my fancy club to hire equally fancy people who graduated from elite schools, or something like that. Right? But his club actually had someone who went to prison for drugs dealing with their clients? So lesson of the day: clubs are seedy and shady, no matter how exclusive they are and how expensive... just don't take part or you are just asking for trouble.

Well, I think the main requirements were attractiveness and discreetness. Why would it matter if the workers or the managers whether they were graduates from elite schools? You don't need prestige to be a good conversationalist or entertaining and you definitely need it to be physically attractive.

The clubs were supposed to be places where celebrities could relax and have a break from their lives as celebrities and images. I wouldn't fault them for that.

The problem is the violations that happened: sneaking pictures, leaking patrons, etc which left people open for exploitation and blackmail.

I guess I'm on a bit of a Lee Joon Gi kick because I just rewatched Flower of Evil and I've been looking at some clips from other dramas.

Even though I've never watched Sword of Aramun, I saw a behind the scenes video and oh, he reminded me of his The King and The Clown days haha
It's kinda crazy that he seemed so different to me in The King and The Clown; like I genuinely didn't think/know he was the same person from Lawless Prosecutor (I think I had seen Lawless Prosecutor before I saw the movie. Maybe I had also seen Flower of Evil before it too). Regardless, I really couldn't believe those characters were played by the same person. He really was pretty in that movie haha

Anywho, while looking at his works, I thought of Again My Life. The funniest moment (to me) was when he realized he would have to do his enlistment again and one of the most disappointing moments was when it was revealed him and the female lead character were dating. I thought he had more chemistry with his reporter friend. I think I would have almost preferred no one dating (since everyone pretty much had a good friends vibe) vs that. Then again maybe I'm being too harsh

Again My Life lost appeal for me after the honey pot plot but also, it stopped being funny. I still haven't seen the last 4 episodes (I did watch some/a lot of the final episode to see how things ended). Maybe now that time has passed, I should give those final episodes another try but meh haha

THE KING AND THE CLOWN is a pretty special case. LJG was a green nugu with only a few supporting roles in small productions under his belt and his acting skills back then were... quite raw, honestly. So in order to make it work director enforced hardcore method acting on him (some of which was questionable at best and borderline abusive at worst - today it would've make a huge controversy for sure), which paid off in the end since his performance turned out great but also exhausted and messed him up a little. Coupled with his newfound absolutely crazy fame it led to a few rough years which he doesn't seem to like reminisce much, it seems. Personally while I liked his acting in TKATC, I never thought it was LJG's very best - I've seen better from him, and under less extreme pressure to boot. Others may disagree though.

AGAIN MY LIFE, unfortunately, was just not good. Cliched writing, very weak FL, action (from what I've heard - yet to finish the drama to this day lol) which was show's strong point also apparently decreased... Honestly, I just think that source material wasn't all that to begin with. LAWLESS LAWYER, for all its faults (lack of plot's originality in terms of "LJG's action show" genre comes to mind), was simply FUN. AML was not.

I don't know about the controversial directing. Each time I've seen him talk about the movie or it being referenced, it's always been in a pretty positive light. The main things I've seen is him beating out 3000 other hopefuls and doing the splits to stand out. I also saw something that after his popularity boost, he had a bout of "celebrity disease".

Also I think I saw that he spoke in a higher pitch even behind the scenes to stay in character when doing the movie. I never remember how he spoke in the movie so I never even noticed he spoke in a higher pitch.

I saw some behind the making of the movie and he does seem different compared to how I've seen him in bts of his dramas nowadays but I figured it was due to (a) he was a rookie or young (b) he wasn't the "mood maker"; he wasn't the lead actor so he didn't have to set the tone so to speak (c) the seriousness of the project

PDs being purposefully harsh on actors to get the best performance from them is nothing new - some of the biggest names in the field are infamous for it, to the point of certain actors openly swearing to never ever work with them again. And LJG did become a megastar from a broke nobody overnight thanks to this very movie, so I think in the hindsight he's sincerely grateful above anything else. I didn't mention that to make it seem like there's a bad blood between him and the crew (even if there is - there or anyone else he worked with - he's surely smart enough now to keep it to himself), but to explain that he feels different in that movie because for him it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience he never went through again on any of his other filming sets. Man has a looong history of working in very physically demanding circumstances (losing weight, doing dangerous stunts, filming water scenes in a freezing winter while terribly sick etc) later in his career, yes, but mentally hardly anything compares. It was a performance squeezed out of him, so to speak, not the one he pushed himself to do fully knowing what and why he's doing.

It was a HANDSTAND SPLIT precisely. Made it to the movie btw, so he's indeed left quite an impression with that)))

Yeah, celeb disease, anxiety thanks to crazy fans, being blacklisted, drinking problems, sudden enlistment, wondering whether he'll still have a career to return to 2 years later... Wild times. Idk if he misses them himself, but I certainly don't.

He was blacklisted?!

1

@britney secretly by government no less! For a decade or so - since mid-00s to mid-10s. Only in like 2016-2017 this was disclosed to public and it was quite a shocker... for people who didn't follow his career closely ofc.

So the story goes like that - not so long after becoming famous he participated in some protests AND starred in a controversial movie depicting a massacre done by SK's militaristic dictatorship in 80s. Not sure which one was seen as a worse offense, but the administration at the time made a list of celebs they've found troublesome and his name ended up in it too. That's how he was shipped off to army without a proper notice, having to drop out of a few projects he's already signed for, causing him a huge reputation and financial losses.

After his return it was just never the same - he wasn't completely banned from entertainment industry per se, but the scripts he received and projects/people willing to work with him were now scarce and nothing even close to the top notch he should've had given his very successful track record pre-army. Haters love to fault him for being typecasted as an action hero - as opposite of more prestigious romcom/melo roles - but this and sageuks were pretty much all he had an access to. He hardly received any awards or often wasn't even invited to such events despite his dramas mostly doing fine and always gaining a decent fanbase and good reviews. His Chungmuro career was killed on the spot and never recovered to this very day.

Prior to him blowing up once again with MOON LOVERS he was pretty much deemed as a has-been - and even for that drama he didn't get ANYTHING of substance domestically despite pulling Daesang nomination (at least! between this and Jang Hyuk in BEAUTIFUL MIND I will never make peace with that year's awards season!) worthy performance. Nowadays he's doing fine... but it's a forever "what could have been" with him as an actor.

5

@gikata what does chungmuro mean?
Aww, I feel bad for him. Once again, I realize how dirty the entertainment industry, netizens (and apparently even the government) does their celebrities and I wonder why people even want to get in the industry.

I remember seeing something that said he's said he wanted to do romance or humanistic typee stories but he doesn't get those types of scripts. It is so freaking hard for actors to get out of the boxes people assign them to. This is why I don't get the comments that criticize the actors for picking bad scripts or bad projects. It's not like they know in advance that a project will be bad or not well received and the scripts could be interesting but the execution fails. I swear there's an alchemy that equals successful dramas haha

Ugh, that really is such a bummer about "what could've been" but I guess he has the career that's meant for him; he's big enough that people know him and like him, he has distinct talents and skills that make him stand out.

It's funny but as I'm trying to look on the brightside, I just get angry on his behalf haha. Years after the fact and he seems to be doing fine but now I'm just wondering if that's why he seems to work so much.

2

@Britney my understanding is that Chungmuro is the movie equivalent of the kdrama awards. Kinda like Hollywood? At any rate, its the movie part of the industry instead of the kdrama series part of the industry.

3

@britney @cozybooks
Chungmuro is SK's movie industry. Used to be quite an elite club that sort of looked down on dramas-only actors, for whom gaining movie roles was seen as a giant step forward in their career. Lately tides changed - pandemic damaged movies big time and they've yet to fully recover, while k-shows gained an international fame which led to movie actors and PDs get off their high horses and migrate to dramas because that's where most money and exposure currently are. For LJG, who broke out with a both critically and commercially hit movie, having that door to close on him pretty much permanently was a huge blow.

I'm not sure about purely romance roles in his case because in one hand, he keeps saying that he just doesn't get such scripts even now... but in other, he also admits he's not really into selling his visuals alone the genre altogether and would only consider it if he truly liked a role. We all can guess the rest, given how his latest romcom attempt was 18 years ago lol))) He's also in his 40s already so I feel like "LJG in romance" will probably remain an inside joke among his fandom and not something that would actually ever happen.

He works less now tho - it used to be one drama every year, with him barely resting in between while also doing fanmeets, releasing albums (that's one thing I miss - he's not the best vocalist out there, but I always loved his voice) etc... Almost as if he was worried that fans will leave/forget him if he disappears from their sight for a day. Now he seems more confident and relaxed, thankfully, even if that means we aren't getting as much of his content regularly as before.

3

@gikata thanks for the insights!! I think it's funny how the tides have turned.

Also, I agree I'm glad he seems like he's in a bit better place now and more confident. I became a fan after Scholar Who Walks the Night and was actually kinda worried for him after lawless lawyer. He was just so skinny. Even if it takes a bit more time for us to get another drama or movie from him, I hope he's able to pace himself and take care of himself while doing so.

2

@cozybooks very ironic indeed.

I think he explained before that his current lean physique makes it easier/safer for him to perform action scenes. Understandable - pro-athletes are also super strict with their weight because even slight change affects their performance, so it's the same logic. LAWLESS LAWYER era was a bit worrisome indeed, but he's better off now, I think. I've yet to bother with ARTHDAL S2 despite my huge love for him, but in AGAIN MY LIFE he looked pretty good.

I miss him dearly in normal sageuks btw, while we're still at it... When?! *cries internally* He said he's 100% done with young hero roles after MOON LOVERS and I get why, but it cannot be that he's now waiting until he's gonna be of the right age to play heroes dads and scheming ministers, right? That's too much of a cruelty right here!

1

And you're right about the action in Again My Life. I really don't mean to typecast him or anything but losing the comedy (to me) AND the action just made it so much less appealing (to me)

I think the idea was always to be like this chess match between his character and the bad guy but just enough of a draw for me without the action and comedy.

Also, from what I remember, I think LJG's character just gave up on the chess match and was just like "yeah, I'm coming after you and I got my ways of staying ahead"

There really wasn't much beyond comedy and action - this kind of plot has been done to death and beyond in k-media (and many other in that region - China loooves them too), and I'm not even quite sure what was the reason for the story's popularity in the first place - cool hero, perhaps? Certain things simply work better in webtoons/novels than dramas. Stronger supporting cast and tighter writing modifying OG plot to the drama format could've improve the situation, but the biggest problem has always been the not so interesting premise imo. Esp freshly after FOE which was really innovative and boundary-pushing for a kdrama.

As I have written on Dramabeans, I am watching, and for the most part enjoying the show Branding in Seongsu. With all the shows going on right now I wouldn't recommend that anyone should rush over to Viki to start it, especially if you are engrossed in what I consider a serious, public service oriented drama about how to cure depression. (Should I suffer depression soon--heaven forbid--I'm taking that show's valuable lesson to heart: I have to begin drinking heavily, and hire someone who looks like Park Hyung Sik to make cute funny faces and hop around me like a chimpanzee. )

But I digress. I actually have a serious question from Branding. One of the funnier characters is a young social media influencer who is always filming herself, and in the latest episode she gets into a verbal confrontation with a hostile young woman, and she says "Whatever, TV" which Viki explains as "Whatever--go watch t.v." as a way of dismissing her. This then launches a really funny verbal battle, where both young women are playing off that "Whatever TV" phrase.

I googled "Whatever, TV" and saw that it was indeed a slang phrase that had been used several years ago, but the source claimed it was no longer in use. So is part of the joke the teen influencer's use of old slang? Does her use of old slang means that she is dismissing her opponent? or that She herself isn't as cutting edge as she thinks she is? Does any young person in Korea say "Whatever, TV" anymore?

Maybe it was a metaphor akin to analogue-digital comparison and she was trying to call her opponent... uhm... not as up-to-date and cool as she herself? Haven't heard that before myself - neither in kdramas nor anywhere else.

I would have said that, but the one discussion of the phrase said that it emerged as way of saying "get out of here because you aren't wanted" with "TV" as a shorthand for "go do something mindless because that's all you can handle."

I actually kind of like that slang meaning, but I already use the phrase with my wife to dismiss any request that I cleanup after dinner, to say I'm going to watch kdramas. (And of course she says "Whatever, dishes.")

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

Of all the twelve months, why is everything always crammed into short February?!😉

I had a lovely sleepover with Victorian convention last weekend, but the week leading up to that weekend had been brutal for my energy levels, as every deadline possible had to be met before that weekend. The advantage of course, is that I did not have to worry about it during last weekend. Not that I would have been able to, I started the weekend exhausted, came back home exhausted...and now I still am exhausted :p

It does not help that this weekend I am hosting one of the same friends for an Asian convention nearby. :p Next weekend I am free and I am looking forward to catching up on sleep and maybe some episodes and movies.🙏🏻

Watching Death's Game watch finally after pausing episode 1.

Honestly, i tread the line between loving and loathing it. The acting is perfect, the story of the human characters is great and fun, but i just find it disgusting that the series portrays suicide as selfish/a sin and shoehorns the shitty "other peoples lives are worse than yours, your own problems don't matter" saying. It just feels so... preachy? Cringe?

I keep skiping all of Death's scenes (even though i love the actress and her outfits) and the hell crap, why did they add this?? The webtoon Death didn't give a shit about the fact that the MC killed himself, he doesn't have the threath of hell over him either. Death just wanted to mess with him after he called her a means to an end. I just don't get why they included the boring christianity angle when it wasn't in the webtoon...

Listen, nothing against christians beliefs, but i am atheist. Christianity is just another story element to me, and after seeing it everywhere the "lore" of it just got kinda boring? I prefer it when it's open to interpretation like in many other shows or if the characters have various beliefs but nothing is "confirmed". I was hoping the would expand the mythology the webtoon had/or even include some interesting korean folklore about life and death.
