Flex Cop 💙! The show deserves the ratings and love.
I hope WI will increase.

FxC absolutely deserves to break into double digit next week. Ep 14 really amped up the tension for the finale. I don't know what to say about WI. It deserves much more love. Straight-up rom-coms aren't faring well.

FxC actually already broke double digits halfway through it's run (11% for Ep. 8). That's probably the main reason why they've started preparing for Season 2.

Wait, really???? Season 2??? I was half joking about wanting a second season - it will be interesting to see what those plans do to how they choose to wrap up the plot threads for the finale... I'd love to spend more time with this team, though!

Yup there was an article on Soompi! I think the show's structure lends itself well to multiple seasons so I'm hopeful they'll wrap it well here. Of course, the more likely outcome is a cliffhanger that will leave us wanting more 😅.

7

@miso2019 thank you for the breaking news!! 😄👍 I'm going to hope they wrap everything up well, but I bet you're right about the cliffhanger 😅

4

Oh! That’s nice. This format works well for another season. I won’t mind seeing this team for another season.

Yeah I am enjoying the show even though its pretty standard fare with obvious villains. I am surprised they pretty much "showed us the villains" so early. Hope they reveal why these people are connected later on but there are couple of ideas in mind.
I kinda don't like the MC being materialistic though..

I think there are other villains that has not showed their cards yet. Also I am more bothered by why he is happy with her diagnosis. There are still a lot of episodes he can make it up to her .

tvN and JTBC know the longer your episode, the higher your ratings.
Queen of Tears Ep.4 was an hour and a half.
SKY Castle finale was an hour and twenty-five minutes.
Crash Landing on You finale was TWO hours.

12.985% in its second week just means Queen of Tears episodes are going to get longer and longer. 🙄

they've already filmed QoT in full - long episodes seem to be par for the course but I have to say, the episodes feel far shorter, the pacing is fantastic so far.

Queen of Tears went on an absolute tear because 5.9% to 13% in the span of 2 weeks? Well… dayum.

Dr Slump’s finale week numbers (particularly sunday) are surprisingly low. With Goryeo-Khitan war not being replaced, I’d have thought it would’ve at least reached closer to the peak numbers despite competing with QOT.

I feel like Midnight Studio is way too campy to be a TV drama (?) The ratings arent too bad for ENA actually, but it’s rather sad seeing the total viewership ratings for mon-tue drama be literally less than 6%. That’s a really sad state. I get that tvN’s not willing to take risk on a flagship drama, but I feel like if they had put QOT on weekdays, it would’ve done just as well with all the hype and word of mouth. Maybe a new makjang will help lol.

yeah after episodes 1-2 it was basically guaranteed Queen of Tears would break double digits this week, but breaking into the teens in week 2?! Damn indeed.

I couldn't be happier, especially as this is my favourite Park Ji-eun drama since The Producers (which has held up really well in the almost a decade since it came out)

Yea, the media hype train (and that includes both social media and press) was massive and just got bigger after the premier week. It came with such massive expectations. It’s pre-shot too, so there’s a ton of sponsors investing in the drama blindly. The pressure must’ve been intense.

I think Park Ji-eun writes the best dramas when she pairs up with KSH lol. YFAS was and will always be my favourite drama of all time. But Producers was such a gem. I rewatched it recently, and the inside jokes, the warmth, the feeling of growth, and the absolutely lovely open ending - it’s such a great drama and doesn’t feel dated at all.

I can only imagine the level of pressure on not just PJE and KSH but also on Kim Ji-won, when you've got the track records they - especially the former two - have and Korean media is writing (in KJW's case) about how it's her first time playing leading lady in the big leagues...... as her fan, I'm really glad this is working out.

and I agree, the Park Ji-eun/Kim Soo-hyun dramas are imo the best of her dramas too. The Producers was so unique, legit sui generis material and I'm glad PJE used her leverage from YFAS's success to get it made. I remember it got short shrift on db at the time because people got hung up on the initial premise of a pseudo-variety and were not pleased that it leaned more towards being, well, a comedy drama using variety/k-ent world as its framing device. I also rewatched recently and it's still brilliant - like you said, it doesn't feel dated and I LOVE that its resolution or the weight of its characters' stories isn't predetermined by who was the biggest name in the cast (Cindy 4ever <3).

Yes I absolutely remember the outcry on how Producers was just not it due to the initial format. Like you said, it’s not a classic kdrama and is what set it apart as a classic in a completely different way.

I remember it airing in the very new Friday-Saturday time slot for KBS at that time which in general was reserved for variety. I think it even competed against Noona over Flowers at some point. It’s such a great slot now, but back then, it was new with the weekday slots being superior. Producers getting to 18% was absolutely mind bogglingly good. (Another reason why I think someone should try putting a high profile drama in a weekday slot to revive it!)

Anyway, I do think Producer is super underrated outside Korea, but the local media has always called it out as a “proof” of PJE’s writing success along with CLOY and YFAS. It’s always ahead of LOTBS.

7

Kim Ji-won "first time playing leading lady in the big leagues.." Is it so!? Never thought of it that way.

1

The producers is a standout show, I am currently enjoying a rewatch and I can not get over how good it is. I am watching to see how Queen of tears compares to it but it has more conventional baddies so I am not sure but the mix of humour and contrasting shocking elements works somehow.

The Producers is an underrated gem at least in part because it's NOT a conventional kdrama, while Queen of Tears is like a peak Classic Kdrama - apples to oranges, really. I love them both for what they are, QoT may follow more of the kdrama playbook but it still got me.

I have noticed there are a few times you write the first comment on a post and then it’s deleted and then later you post another one with no acknowledgement of the deleted commented. We all have comments with typos or where we forget to add something but the frequency of your deletes made me wonder if you are having a specific problem a beanie or the DB admin could help you with.

For us international viewers rating is not a big deal, but these dramas depend on ratings. Lower the rating/popularity, lower will be the percentage of production of such lovely content. Plus, it doesn't matter that this drama did well on netflix because netflix isn't sponsoring it, but rather a distributor of it and these distribution profits aren't a huge factor in "production" decision, otherwise there wouldn't be 100s of dramas in the backlog waiting for an air date.

That is sad. It’d be nice if these little gems are also appreciated by the SK viewers as that’s my main draw to Kdramaland.

💯 Truer words have never been spoken M. Let's just enjoy our dramas and let SK have their ratings. I know my ❤ and SK ratings hardly ever match.

Genuine question - was Dr Slump better than Samdalri (if you’ve seen it)? They’re both the same genres, and I believe both had pretty similar hype going in, along with similar level of leads popularity.

Just trying to figure out what went wrong with DS. I understand Samdalri had a much easier time with competition, but I don’t think the high ratings was reflective of the quality (at least Samdalri was an absolute drag for me). Basically trying to understand why DS’s ratings is so low, or why Samdalri’s was so high unless there is a significant difference in quality…

Required fields are marked *

I can’t compare because I didn’t watch Samdari. But I think low ratings of DS might be because of these reasons:
1. As Reply 1988 suggested: Mental health issues being front and center;
2. OTT acting (exaggerated acting) in some scenes for the fun factor and OTT of the ML for almost every scene for the same factor;
3. PSH being married and already having a child.

I think it might be more easier to cheer for the FL in any show if they are single irl because it’s easier to see the character, not the actresses, that way.

I dropped Samdalri in week 2, but the actors in Samdalri are more popular and powerhouses in acting. Also, it is not just in SK, but most viewers do not like an overdose of aegyo and consider them to be embarassing or cringe. They want happy but the happy should be hard earned and not a fan service.

I’m definitely in the camp of cringe when it comes to aegyo. It’s absolutely ew to me and very few get it right in a way that makes me smile/laugh rather than groan tbh. It’s admittedly the biggest reason I dropped DS.

5

The actors are in thirties (one of them is married and has a child) and are playing doctors. Too much aegyos spoil the enjoyment.

3

i watched both and i prefer Dr.Slump more. Love the healing process in Dr.Slump. Samdalri is funny and comforted drama too but I like Dr.Slump more as how it approach mental health issue and promoting way to battle it in a more realistic way. This drama really comforting at so many levels.

Agreed.

2

I watched both and thought Doctor Slump was a lot deeper and also simultaneously funnier and had more heart. In Samdari there is also the dreaded love triangle with a pathetic SLM who never had a chance. Also the “villain” was rather one note. There was also a lot of drinking and the dreaded OTP separation and time jump.Maybe it’s really the competition.

@mandy I don’t remember whether there was anything competing with Welcome to Samdalri. I also don’t know if the topic of mental health being front and centre is a factor as we know k dramas don’t usually handle this well.
I liked both shows minus the drinking and unnecessary second lead in Samdalri and drinking and jealousy with murder plot in Dr Slump.

I believe it was just against Park’s Marriage contract and Maestra (I completely slept on this drama and haven’t a clue on how it was perceived) My Demon would be a write off lol. So all in all, definitely much weaker than the current line up.

You’re right. The mental health theme is probably a big factor outside of competition. I didn’t finish DS so didn’t get to the parts you mentioned. But murder plots are the unfortunate new trend in rom coms so you’d think that would help the drama.

Sigh. I think I maybe be trying to figure out something that’s not figure-able lol

I am shocked that WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE is not doing better.

LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE is now finished. The final episode was largely an extended epilogue that almost rejoiced in reminding us how many side stories could have been told and were not.

Pardon my ignorance but why are there no Wednesday- Thursday shows?

FLEX X COP deserves the love it is getting and so does QUEEN OF TEARS.

It was a passable run for UEE who was not well served by the writer because most of the time her character was just a downtrodden victim. Only rarely was she allowed to express anything else.

On the other hand, the actor who played Taemin, Ko Joo-won, got to play a wider range of emotions while at the same time projecting that very rare trait known as Gravitas (And I mean Gravitas in the original Roman sense of the term). Very few actors can do that, but at all times it was palpably present in his character (which consistency is actually part of the meaning of the term as it was originally expressed). Plotwise the character of Taemin and the story we should have had with him was criminally neglected but as far as adding to his acting credentials I believe that Mr. Ko will find himself much in demand.

kJW did indeed imbue his thankless role of Taemin with a great deal of dignity notwithstanding his early desperate attempts to woo Hyoshim. I would really like to see him in a good KD or two.
