[Drama Chat] Your fastest drama drop

Dropping dramas is a sad reality of living here in dramaland. While many of us try to uphold the 4-episode grace period, sometimes that is simply not possible.

What’s the drama that you dropped the fastest and why?

My fastest kdrama drop would have to be shooting Stars. I started the episode and was immediately extremely offended by the Lion King soundtrack used to show that a character was in Africa building a well. Ugh. I immediately dropped the show then and there. I have no idea how long that scene was but it can't have been up to five minutes. So my fastest drop was Shooting stars after five minutes of episode one.

Literally just posted on my wall about something similar. Why must they incorporate Africa into their dramas. It’s always so disrespectful, condescending and racist. Like leave Africa alone. Numerous plots and scenarios exist, you won’t perish if you don’t mention Africa 🙄🙄

This keeps reminding me of YouTube review of Emily in Paris, season 2, whose main heroine continues being a dumb culturally insensitive offensive Americans, and the reviewers are like throwing hands in air frustrated and begging, “We asked you not to do this in season 1, and yet you did the same in season 2. How hard it is to STOP doing simple things people ask you to do!!!!” lol

I suspect it’s because they don’t want to set it in an actual specific country but also didn’t want to make one up. Which is kind of interesting because I’ve seen fictional characters go to “Africa” or “South America” in the same way, but if it’s somewhere in Europe it seems like it usually gets a name along the lines of Genovia/Latveria/MadeUpistan.

Exactly the same goes to Islam, we are just begging kdrama to leave Islam alone. Every time they mention Islam they're trying to be the most disrespectful as they could!🤦‍♀️
I dropped "Ms. Hammurabi" the moment FL character wore a mocking hijab, and she had a short skirt under his hijab I think (?) And you could plainly see her legs, that was like 20 minutes into ep 1 so ....

1. Penthouse 1....15-30 minutes after the first episode, too much yelling.
2. Goblin...2 episodes....don't understand heads or tales of the story.
3. Doctor Lawyer: 3.5 episodes: Poor acting
4. The King of Eternal Monarch: 3.5 episode
Confusing storyline
5. KTL: Yoona and the damsel in distress line, silly portrayal of hoteliers and toilet jokes

Bad Family. I never even finished the first episode. Apparently, the drama's great and comes highly recommended, but I wasn't in the mood at the time, and now it's so old (2006) that it's hard to even go back and watch it.

The trailer for Welcome to Samdal-Ri, the so called photographer holds a camera but covers the lens with a finger and pretends to take a picture. Maybe she wanted to blur the picture ... couldn't get past that.
She even tried to clean the camera while spitting on it instead of wiping with a microfiber cloth.

Me too, @midnight. I only make note of those shows that I've watched (or power-skimmed) in my Beanie-approved Drama Spreadsheet™, and if I don't write things down these days...there's no way it's staying in my brain. 🤣

That said, I know I dropped Queen of Tears at the scene where the men were preparing the memorial service food. They were humiliated by this work, and I didn't trust the writer to do well by such themes.

I would say that it's likely that I drop shows at the moment I stop trusting the writer with my heart or, sometimes, simply with my time. If I could remember more of them, I could be more sure 😆

Through the years, I have dropped shows 10 minute in, half hour, first ep ending, 2nd episode half mark, you name it. Most of them I don't remember the names nor subjects or actors.

I really can't say specifically what makes me drop a show. It's more the reverse, if there is nothing to make me hold on to it.

The reasons to make me drop despite any positive points are very very few.

This show should be called Personally Distasteful. I spit it out after about an episode and a half. The trope of the heterosexual ML pretending to be or mistaken for being gay—usually played for laughs—is tired and offensive, and should long since have been retired.

Is not that i love this drama but i used to watch it with my mon, so i remember that lmh character didnt act like the streotypical gay in front of anyone, his friend acted like that but it wasnt that exagerated, and there wasnt much scenes like that (only when he was talking with the friend of son ye jin). And the president of the architecture company was actually gay but he was not stereotypical, he even confess to the ml but it was nothing cringy, the ml with respect say no to him. I didnt feel they exagerated the mannerism of a gay man like in other shows. They acknowledge that its difficult in korean society to be accepted as gay man, the president for example at the end had the courage to find love. Well thats my point of view, ofc the drama is not perfect and have a lot of issues. Sorry for my english

No need to apologize for your English. I had no trouble understanding what you wrote. It's far better than I could do posting in a language that wasn't my native one. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I hope you won't hesitate to keep sharing your thoughts here on Dramabeans!

I didn't get far enough into the show to see how they treated the gay company president. I was immediately turned off by the coy "meet cute" when the FL mistook the ML as being gay. I didn't like the idea that a man being gay rendered him "harmless" to the FL. On top of that, I just didn't like the pairing of Son Ye-Jin and Lee Min-Ho.

Considering that the show is from 2010, it was probably a big deal to depict gay characters in a non-negative/non-sterotypical light in a South Korean drama. Perhaps it's not fair for me to judge it by the standards and attitudes of 2020s America. Thanks for providing that perspective.

“The Impossible Heir” dropped it with the speed of light at episode 1.5 once I realized what they were trying to do: Melodramatic love triangle in this big 2024. I am not sitting through that.

Aside from that, every other dramas I have dropped was because I missed an episode and grew lazy to finish the drama.

I might come back for dramas that have good reviews for example Knight Flower, but other than that, most of the offerings have been personally lacklustre for me. And I don’t wanna waste time on bad dramas

Two recent shows I’ve dropped within the first two episodes, Queen of Tears and Impossible Heir

A year ago I thought I should watch at least one of the adaptations from Hana Yori Dango to understand its popularity (I had not read the manga nor watched the anime), so I opted for Meteor Garden (China, 2018). I have not watched the famous Boys Over Flowers (Korea) yet. It's not even on my list.

3
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

I felt the same way and opted for the Japanese version because it was the shortest. The plot was still terrible but at least the lead actors were good. This is one case where I completely fail to see the appeal of this particular story line.

3
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I always read that F4 Thailand (2021) was quite good, but I'm not in a hurry to watch it.
I found Meteor Garden very enjoyable (if I don't count that nonsense of an ending), but I don't need to watch the same story again for now.

3

The manga Hana Yori Dango started in 1992 and ended in 2003. It's an old story now but that had a lot of success. The SML was the original ML but the public loved the bad guy, so the writer changed him as a lead.

Then, there were different adaptations the TW one Meteor Garden (2001), the J one Hana Yori Dango (2005). Boys Over Flowers happened later in 2009 and it was one of the worst adaptations.

The Thaï version could modernize the story and the characters but still kept the nostalgy.

3

Well, the chemistry in hana yori dango was real (the main leads were dating), but still the Japanese actors have an exaggerated performance because that's how they used to act when adapting a manga or anime (now they are changing due to globalization). The korean version of makino was the most problematic, but in my opinion all the tsukasas adaptations were decent and maybe my comment is not a popular opinion, but I liked lee min ho's performance here and I prefer him over matsumo jun.Of course, the dialogue. and ridiculous scenes abound in the 2009 drama, but here lmh delivers his lines very well, no matter how ridiculous you see the situation, I feel it believable, I like how he strikes a balance between real and otp acting , I feel like he didnt contained himself like in other projects, maybe because he was a newbie he felt more free and genuine?, anyway I know that people don't like lmh's acting so im alone in this opinion. On the other hand, I have to admit that I didn't really like Dylan Wang or Bright's acting, I felt like they were very reserved and trying too hard to act as they were told that it didn't seem real. For me, its advantage was better dialogue (I mean, less cringe), the scenes made more sense, and in the case of 2021, more exposition of how bad Tsukasa was and the consequences of his actions. That is just my opinion. The story itself is outdated.

4

I watched the Taiwan version starring Barbie Hsu and she set the bar real high for the character that I don't think any other remake will be able to match. She was born to be the character. It really matches her real life personality, she has the same grit and toughness mixed with courage and kindness.

My ID is Gangnam Beauty - that was another of my drop. I stuck through True Beauty though. While I don't regret watching it, if it was today, I woud have dropped True Beauty episode 2.

6

@minniegupta1 I have tried True Beauty two times. The first time I watched 2 episodes. The second try I watched 7 episodes. Many of my friends love that drama but it never clicked with me.

I just wanted to see Sohn Ho-jun in a better project after the messy First Responders. Immediately I saw the trajectory of the story from episode 1.5, episode 4 sealed it for me. I was done. I dropped Wonderful World right at the teasers and I'm preparing to drop Grabbed by the Collar for the same reasons I dropped My Happy Ending... the similar bBanes of the story.
My Lovely Liar episode 2. I watched episode 1 solely because of Kim Sun-young's cameo. After episode 1, I knew I was done.
Queen of Divorce Episode 4 - Kang Ki-young deserves better. I've finally seen that Lee Jiah isn't that much of an actress. But, she has the star power.
The Story of Park's Marriage episode 6. Great story I must admit. It just wasn't clicking for me. Plus, I've struggled to get into a Lee Se-young story since The Red Sleeve Cuff. I've dated a lot of guys with very large eyes in my youth because I have small eyes myself, but I realized that the size of a guy's eyes matters less than how he uses them (ahem) If he's not working on his soul, if he lacks direction and meaning in his life, it really doesn't matter how pretty his eyes are. They won't shine or have flavor. The ones who work on themselves to improve and grow, who have character and integrity, in the end they're the ones you want to be with.

Into the Ring - Sitcom vibe.
Lovestruck in the City
Mad for Each Other - Obnoxious lead characters.
Memorist - Boring.
Panda and Hedgehog
Partners for Justice - Clueless FL.
Que Sera Sera - Sitcom vibe, obnoxious FL.
Remarriage & Desires - Too makjang.
Romance Is a Bonus Book - Dropped twice. Didn't care about any of the characters.
That Winter, the Wind Blows - Excessively bleak.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo - Sophomoric.
Whisper - Meh.

I made it all the way through episode 1 of these shows:
Beautiful World - Not my type of show.
Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency - Meh.
The Merchant of Gaekju - Terrible acting; felt like community theater sageuk.
Miss Hammurabi - Didn't like FL; no chemistry among the characters.
My Father Is Strange - Sitcom vibe.
My Sassy Girl - Sophomoric.
Nine: 9 Times Time Travel - Hated FL.
Revenant - Too heavy for me.

I'm curious about which words you would have used to describe Hwarang and Lovestruck in the city!!

It was a long time ago, and I didn’t leave any notes. I remember that I didn’t get very far with either one before I decided I wasn’t interested. I don’t think I out-and-out hated them.

Speaking as an old Boomer, I liked both (minus the irritating gurning of Go Ara and the pathetic clinging of JCW's character).

Dropped DDof Sunshine for exact reason. They were clueless and I felt with personal drama I was going through it was too close to home

That's quite a list. I admire your ruthlessness in pruning shows you don't want to watch. I've watched way too much drek.

There are maybe a couple of dozen dramas I should have bailed on but didn’t. I’ve gradually come to embrace the idea that there’s no dishonor in dropping a show I’m not enjoying.

‘ there’s no dishonor in dropping a show I’m not enjoying’👈🏾great phrase I do wonder what keeps some of us watching shows as if we are doing some unknown person a favour when it brings us no joy.

I have not watched Weightlifting, but I have heard very good things about it. It's the first time I heard the term sophomoric about it. Why did you think that?

It was many years ago, so I can’t recall specific details. I don’t generally care for shows about peppy high schoolers or college kids, which is probably why I had that impression. My notes say “Maybe worth another try,” but I haven’t felt inclined to do so as of yet.

But a lot of people really love the show. Please don’t let my comments stop you from watching it or any of the other shows I listed (except maybe Café Minamdang)!

I don't generally watch High School shows either - the only one that I watched was True Beauty and had a fill of my life time. All others that have high school in them are basically flashbacks, of which I loved Our Beloved Summer and I think Doctor Slump also knitted it very well. I didn't realise Weightlifting was a college show.

While I generally steer clear of the genre, there are two high school dramas that I really liked: Weak Hero Class 1 and Melancholia. Both are very dark. The first one is also disturbingly violent.

I'm not sure if it's considered a high school drama (the parents figure equally in the story), but I loved Moving. It's another show with a lot of violence, though more in the fantasy/superhero vein.

And I liked At a Distance, Spring Is Green, a melancholy drama about college students.

I watched Strong Girl Bong Soon first and really liked it. People also recommended Weightlifting Fairy but I could not get into it. I guess it's also the reason Babylilo stated - because it was a school setting (university?) and I'm not really interested in student dramas anymore maybe because of my age.

I enjoyed Strong Girl Bong-Soon, too. I had been looking forward to the spinoff featuring her cousin Nam-Soon, but dropped it off my watch list after reading all the negative reviews.

re: Nine: 9 Times Time Travel - hahaha! I didn't even get a chance to hate the FL, just her bowl haircut alone stopped me in my tracks and I just could not continue further. I'm so frustrated! Because it's a highly rated drama and I like Lee Jin Uk!

There are too many, but the latest was "Squid Game" (episode 1)." I know it's crazy popular, but not for me. Not even Wi Ha-joon could make me watch another episode.

I’ve dropped a bunch of shows after one episode:
Dance Sports Girls: took an instant dislike to the FL and the setting.
Girls' Generation 1979: I know the 70s were sexist because I lived through them, and revisiting that isn’t entertaining for me.
Behind Your Touch: holy sh*t was was that? Hated everything.
Doona!: hated Doona.
Man to Man: found the FL weird and off-putting (both actress and character) and I could see they were going to wedge in an unwelcome and unnecessary romance.

And a few others in short order:
Encounter: lost me when it turned into yet another inappropriate workplace romance in episode 2, plus I found the ML callow and the FL inert.
Hogu’s Love: gutted out two episodes before giving up. I lack the ability to find cringe humor funny.
Oh! Youngsim: noisy and mindless. I started FFing in episode 1 and didn’t finish episode 2.
The Real Has Come: dipped into parts of a few episodes and couldn’t find anything to grab onto.
Would You Like a Cup of Coffee: soporific. This might be my quickest drop in elapsed time with the short episodes; I don’t think I finished episode 3. I wandered off to make a cup of coffee and never came back.

I posted about this on the post about a drama you shoukd stay away from and Encounter woukd have made it. It was my very first k-drama. I didn't return to another for a while, and then landed with another and almost never made it back.....

1. King the Land - it was horrible (toilet humour in 2023???);
2. The King: Eternal Monarch - what a mess;
3. Money Heist: Korea (I didn' t feel the vibe);
4. Goblin - unfortunately, I didn't drop it fast enough (I had just finished "Coffee Prince", so I wanted more of Gong Yoo).

The are much more dramas that I dropped after few episodes. Thirty or something 🙂

With kdramas I have learned recommendations mean nothing. Even if your tastes match in everything else in the world, k-drama it won't. It just will not. I have no idea why.
That OST though.....
