Wanna hear a secret?? I finished this drama in a day and, well, pretty much, enjoyed it. How, you ask?
I actually turned on (English) dubbing halfway through.
I've never thought "You know, I should listen to this drama dubbed," in my entire life. But I started with subs, and once I moved to dubbing, I actually went back to listen to earlier scenes again, only in dubbed English...and I really do feel it was funnier that way 😉
It was so much more enjoyable for me, in fact, that I'd actually recommend it to folks who can stand it--the cursing hits home better, the comedic timing is pretty darn good, and the guy who voices Ahn Jae-hong sort of sounds a tiny bit like Matthew Broderick, which really hit the right spot. Those f'ing jingles from the early episodes are really gonna be in my head for a long while--when they're sung in English, they translated the words quite a bit differently so they make "sense" ("I'm walking duck-footed...Like a big duck, a big fucking duuuck").
CHA EUN-WOOO!!!
PS: For those paying attention--and I'm sure there were many--Twerp is played by Punchable Face from PMR. I guess he's not moving up in the world 😂

This is great to know. I never even think to check if something is dubbed. Will definitely make it an easy watch

ETA: I’ve now seen this drama three times completely through, one with subtitles, once with dubbing, and once comparing the two!
It’s one of my favorite comedies of recent years… Just don't expect it to make too much sense, and go with the flow. Many scenes actually play like “skits” and are absolutely hilarious.
In general, you'll know by the end of episode three whether this show is for you! I also hear tell that some people are enjoying taking this drama in one-episode-per-day chunks. I think it can be easily overwhelming 😂

I tried watching it dubbed, but ended up switching back to the original language with subtitles. I couldn't really appreciate the performances without hearing the actors speak the lines themselves—especially knowing what their voices and speech patterns actually sound like. And it drove me crazy that the voices did not at all match the actors' mouth movements. I've seen dubbing done much better.

I very much disagree! Of course the lips of the actors aren't going to match the speech--they're speaking Korean not English!!
And the compromises the dubbers made here between the sense of the words and literal meaning were excellent--especially in the songs, but also, frankly, in the pre-teen boy level of cursing. Since so much of the humor was in cut-off curse words and quick interchanges of speech, the spoken dubs were made to be far more inventive and varied instead of the same words that ended up printed on the screen over and over.
Moreover, because I could listen and not read, I had the ability to pay MUCH more attention to the actors' hilarious faces and body-based comedy.

The experience will be different for everyone. I was way too distracted by the issues I mentioned to focus on the show.
I do realize that the screen actors and voice actors are speaking two different languages. I might have been fine with watching this version if had been done better. When well-executed, the dubbed speech is synchronized much more closely with the mouth movements, and the vocal inflections better match the facial expressions.

I think the dubbing was really well done, both in tone and in synchronization.

Mix of deadpan/aggressive/self-enhancing humour in Ep 1 made me go "Ehhh?", but the drama found its grove in Ep 2, but I quickly got bored by Ep 3 and 4. Maybe people who like absurd humour will find it engaging, but I did not, so DROP!

The opening had "Is it easy to live as a chicken nuggey for 5 days or as human for 50 years?", so I thought it would have some philosophical experiment/ponderings, but I don't know of they carried it through the end.

They did and they did not. Those lines themselves were indeed carried through, it's true. What they mean/what her answer to the questions were...well, I would say they ended up being moot in deference to what the folks around her wanted to think.

Had to go with you. I made it halfway through 2 and just had to drop it. I guess that type of humor just isn't for me and I haven't reached the supreme suspension of belief level yet to have maybe liked it.

I expected something more whacky and bizarre. The humor was more slapstick than intellectual. It was a sci-fi com but light on the sci-fi as the rules were not super clear. Ahn Jae-Hong was the off-center lead of the series while Ryu Seung-Ryong was very expressive as the stressed out dad. I thought the nugget would have been intelligent or interactive. That was a let-down. The show kept raising moral paradoxes between science, religion and human greed, but no strong life lesson in the end since only memories were erased but not the characters' fates (which means it starts all over again.) It was an OK show but it relied too much on flashbacks. I think it would have made a better movie than a web series.

I tried! Could we get half beans🤣🤣
Watched first 2 in English. Korean wouldn't have made a difference in the experience for me. I am a Rom-COM girl, not just COM I guess. I even watched the last episode to see if I could enjoy but not this time. Dropped.
But- it did inspire me to watch My Demon instead. Laughed lots in the first 3 episodes. And it's still a bean.
I hope you all have a better sense of humor than I do and love CN!

I think the story was ok but it was too long for what it was. It reminded me of The sound of your heart in terms of the humour as that was hysterically funny in parts too but other parts didn’t work for me. The meta of the far away look leading to the ‘we don’t have time for this’ flashbacks and the links with Be melodramatic were the funniest scenes for me.
Did anyone work out how the family story was passed on in the Joseon era as we didn’t see him explain the story to his wife and we didn’t see any children either unless I missed that scene. They should have shown that one instead of the drunken escapades with the women in the courtesan house.
I watched it all the way through in Korean and whilst it was an ok the male lead was in a more consistently funny film Secret zoo which had a ridiculous concept carried through because it was short. Be melodramatic is in my top 10 dramas, and he is the male lead in that too.

I forgot the other scene that made me laugh out loud was the bullies fight scene and I liked how those characters were dealt with when they showed up later.
I also liked the story behind the yellow trouser outfit and the stubborn streak that led to the son finally winning the father son battle of wills in the end whilst still appreciating the message from the dad. With the level of emotional threats by both parents throughout his childhood I don’t know how he maintained his kind soul.

Reply, I'm still trying to figure out why you're trying to make sense of this drama!
I vote that it was Twerp who was actually the ancestor of that whole family, passing down the drawing and the story to others...

In Be melodramatic there is a song the male lead hates, there is a whole story behind it and a scene where the female lead uses it as a weapon. So having the actor in this drama and just choosing that song to be in this drama, added a meta feel and made me laugh. I loved that they talked about the show in such a positive light as the PD for Chicken Nugget was also the PD and screen writer for Be Melodramatic.

There's a whole skit in Episode 6 directly about Be Melo...it goes on for scenes and scenes! It's when the Mad Scientist turns into a caterpillar ("LARVA!!!") and watches Be Melo for years with the Nobleman's Chicken Nugget business man...they sing the song in a fantasy sequence. Yellow Pants stops the sequence himself--in a fun meta move. You probably just skipped that skit :)

Even if it wasn't always my kind of humour, there were enough funny scenes to keep me watching. Of course, it also helped that the episodes are only thirty minutes long.
However, in the middle of the eighth episode, when the drama went back to the past, I suddenly lost all interest and dropped it.
By the way, I'm now craving these chicken meatballs.

Based on the premise, this was the type of show I normally would have passed over. But with Ahn Jae-Hong and Ryu Seung-Ryong as the leads, I figured it was a good opportunity to expand my horizons and try something out of my comfort zone. I binged the entire show in one sitting.
Ahn Jae-Hong knows how to walk the fine line between endearingly silly and annoyingly dumb. I was charmed by the absurdist tone he set at the opening of the show as his character, Baek-Joong, danced and sang his way down the street wearing his signature yellow pants. Baek-Joong and his crush Min-A were adorable together. Unfortunately, Min-A chicken-nuggeted out of the picture way too soon, before establishing with the audience her close relationship with Baek-Joong and her father, Sun-Man. It made it difficult to connect emotionally to their grief and desperation at her alarming transformation. I was taken aback when Sun-Man instantly accepted Baek-Joong’s whackadoodle assertion that the mysterious machine had turned her into a savory snack; he didn’t even stop to ask for an explanation or confirmation before launching into hysterics.
After the promising start, “absurd” degenerated into just plain stupid. The tone of the show was wildly inconsistent, as if the creative team had randomly tossed together a bunch of bits and sequences from other dramas. It might have worked had there had been an overarching framework to provide some cohesion. I wish there had been more moments that channeled the vibe from the beginning of the show, like the meta “we don’t have time for a flashback” routine.
The show’s pacing was awful: extended sight gags that weren’t all that funny seemed to go on forever, burying the drama’s emotional core. (Somewhere along the way, Sun-Man got pushed into the background, a shameful waste of the talented Ryu Seung-Ryong. The writers gave him practically nothing to work with.) The story meandered, jumped around, and circled back on itself to no apparent purpose. The weak ending was a real letdown. With better/tighter writing, directing, and editing, the show could have made a saucy little chicken nugget of a movie, instead of a big ol’ turkey of a drama series.
One positive note… I had a great time singing along to “Your Shampoo Scent in the Flowers”! I haven’t watched Be Melodramatic and so didn't get the meta-reference, but I’m a big fan of Jang Beom-June and know the song well. I also love his contributions to the OSTs of three shows I *have* seen: Signal, Hospital Playlist 2, and Search: WWW.

I honestly enjoyed this drama. I was laughing every episode. The ending did leave me a little confused as to how that would benefit the main couple but perhaps there was an issue with the translation? This is one that I would recommend to any Beanie who hasn't watched it.

Agreed, and your comment reminds me that @vienibenmio had asked for more thoughts/a Beanie conversation about the ending, and I hope won't mind, @sirena, me using your comment as an opportunity to do so!!
First off, I don't think that anything in Chicken Nugget should be taken too seriously, so the end might just be what it looks like--a return to start, making the last 4.5 hours a "shaggy dog story" with no point. Our characters will simply go back to the beginning and make the same decisions and it'll go around and around.
However (하지만), I'd actually argue that there is one small point that our youthful webcomic/drama writernim is making here.
The reason Yellow Pants makes the decision to start again "at the beginning" is that he didn't feel it right to cheat Sun-man and Mi-na out of time with one another. The importance of father-daughter relationship outweighed the importance of (I think everyone on the planet??) remembering what happened over past 50 years.
So, yeah, we could see this as simple absurdism, and we'd probably be right.
But, we could also see it as an insistence that real love trumps all.

@attiton I agree with you regarding why Yellow Pants makes the decision to start over. And perhaps you are right that they are all doomed to repeat the same events. I just assumed that Yellow Pants was the only one who kept his memories. I believed that the aliens had allowed him to remember so that he could prevent the disaster that started it all from happening again.

It was funny, light, and just silly. Don't expect anything intellectual or deep.
I finished it in two sittings although it dragged toward the end. The first K-drama I finished in a long time. Disclaimer: I think my taste in drama is just strange lately. (The previous one I finished was Mask Girl).

What a quirky little fun show this turned out to be! I enjoyed this in bits, like nuggets, and laughed hard at the silliness and writing.
Inspite of the silliness, there were times when it hits deep. By the time I reached Ep 9, it all tied up neatly in its own absurd way.
I enjoyed the leads, the side characters etc especially the professional slacker Kim!!
Ryu Seung-ryong and Ahn Jae-hong were awesome, though I loved AJH a bit more because he owned those yellow pants like a champ.
