@db-staff I get that it's a lot of work to do the mini-recaps weekly, and I am not asking for that again...but do you suppose there's a chance for us to get Drama Hangouts for this weekender divided into, say, 10-episode chunks?

It was so much fun talking with the weekender beanies about Live Your Own Life, despite its being a mediocre drama, but if we have only one thread for 50 episodes it'll be much more difficult to have an ongoing conversation.

@db-staff I second Seon-ha’s request.
First impression
This weekender has been filmed differently - I am not technically sure how to describe it - as it doesn’t look as basic/cheap as the previous two dramas. I wish we could stay longer with the younger actors as I like both of them but I imagine the transition to the adult actors will occur very soon.

Our prologue is likely going to end soon with a reason why our leads were separated. Our young actors have done a splendid and convincing job and we have fleshed out our central characters and the way that they are related.

I agree that the production values do seem to be higher in some ways.

Both child actors are experienced, charming and light up the screen. I know it isn’t going to happen but I would have loved it if she was a bit older so that her crush on him didn’t seem so hopeless and hence was reciprocated. Then, if they had could have dedicated 10 eps to them, it would have made me happy.
@oldawyer: No doubt you would have recognised many actors but apart from the child actors, I recognised the actor who played Lee Inok in TRHC and Yoon Yoosun.

Oddly enough those are the only two 'adult' actors that I recognised as well, but I have seen the young actress playing our young FL before and she did a fabulous job in these episodes.

10 episode chunks sounds about right. I hope that they are willing to do that.

I am encouraged by the way that this show has started. We are being given a real background for the story to come and considerable insight into many of the characters, not just the two leads.

Our conniving stage mom is already with us and while we can understand her desperation, we can also see that she already has formed bad habits and self-destructive behaviors- like an inability to control her temper or watch what she is saying.

But we also got to see events that will probably affect the behavior of both of our leads in the future.

We also have a yet unexplained mystery: Why did our now Chaebol birth mother need to leave her baby on her friend's doorstep?

I'd assume that she gave birth before she met/married the CEO.

So far I can handle Dora's mom as an unsavory character--after all, you need some antagonists with a potential redemption arc--but I find Jin Dan's conniving, greedy mom almost unredeemably bad. I think the difference is that her forcing herself in as the head of the household wasn't realistic/reasonable enough. If she was the mistress who caused the chairman's wife to die of a heartache/stress, then I think the family has more than enough cause to not let her get away with her hysterical "I'm going to take over the chairman's bedroom and you can't make me leave" move and cause chaos for the whole household--only to have her say that she'd leave if she can have one of the businesses. I have 0% sympathy for such an over-the-top, caricature of a mistress. Hopefully she'll be just a very minor character, but so far I find her character distasteful and unrealistically set up.

I agree with you about the conniving greedy mistress being a nasty piece of work who will be the primary villain in this work. But the writer has given even her something: Her lover left a will where the company that she demands has been bequeathed to her son Jin Dan who as his child has inheritance rights. She is nasty and we do not like her, but she is not entirely wrong other than wanting to control what is actually her child's property. Would she ruin that business? Absolutely, so in fact the family is right not to have made the transfer yet- they are holding it in trust until Jin-dan can hold it without his mom's interference.

As for Do-ra's mom- we will at least see her get her comeuppance, I am sure. Still, I much prefer a greedy, grasping Stage Mom to the FL's mom that we got in the last weekender. Plus, we get nice adoptive mom and dad for our ML AND his birth mom seems nice as well.

Yes, the dead chairman's recorded wishes carry some weight, but in this case, I wish his son would have an even greater loyalty to his mom and the backbone to not let this obviously bad woman into his house/life. To me, love for his wrong mother and his wife should trump this recording. This is the perfect case for giving her some cash in exchange for a signed note promising to stay out of their lives forever. But of course, these makjangs wouldn't be makjangs if people behaved rationally.

2

Required fields are marked *

Typo: it should be "wronged mother".

1

As I understood it that provision was not just recorded but is part of his written will as well.

However, I do not believe that what she is demanding is actually appropriate because the company in question was not in fact willed to her nor does the recording say it was either. By demanding that it be given to her she is in fact proposing to rob her own child- so she is indeed a nasty piece of work after all.

2

Within two episodes we already have more narrative intrigue than in the entirety LYOL, in my opinion!!! I'm so excited!!! I know I shouldn't be...but look at all the exclamation points!!!

I watched " Young Lady and Gentleman' all the way thru, and this is by the same people I think, so I'm feeling positive. I think you need to follow the "watch a quarter of it before you drop it" rule though. Normally people say watch 4 episodes, which is one quarter of a 16-parter. I think you need to watch 10 episodes of these longer ones, because they are slower and the story/characters take a while.

It does have same writer as YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN and even the same actor playing the ML. It also had a brief Prologue to give us a "they met when they were younger" story but this time that prologue is much longer and introduces us to many more of the characters and even their motivations to some extent, so that it is not just a "meet cute" moment. It may be that we are seeing some 'lessons learned' from this writer because even though it was a hit YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN had some serious dramatic flaws.

Even if we have yet to see our main actor and actress, I would recommend not giving the show more than ten episodes before making a decision on staying with it or not. All weekenders are not the same and I have dropped some- including at least one that I wished I had dropped sooner. By the end of the tenth episode you should be able to tell if this one is your cup of tea or not.

But I do recommend giving it those full ten episodes. The first episodes of one of the best weekenders, ONCE AGAIN, were not happy ones. At that point the tale was a story of things falling apart and people being disappointed. Perhaps fortunately most of the characters were fairly likeable so I hung in there and I am very glad that I did.

The ML- in high school is the main actor though isn't he? I'm a bit confused by people saying we haven't seen our main actor- though the actress has not shown up yet.

2

The younger generation version of our ML is played by Moon Sung-hyun. They made sure that he looks like Ji Hyun Woo by giving him the same hairstyle (he also does otherwise look a lot like him). Our young Mr. Moon also had a guest appearance in the 4th episode of QUEEN OF TEARS. He had a supporting role in UNDER THE QUEENS UMBRELLA and a guest role in MY DEAREST. He seems to have only been active as an actor for about three years but he already has quite a resume.

2

I do have a bit of face-blindness, thanks!

1

Not being able to reply directly to a specific comment is particularly annoying me today.
You’re right for sure that they have done a good job with matching the looks of Moon Sunghyun and Ji Hyunwoo. Even though the 2 actors energies came across differently, it made me think it is a deliberate choice rather than a consequence of young actors who are
cast hither and dither. The young actor portrayed Daechung was confident, stubborn, heedless at times, impulsive, but kind and caring. I want to know why and how he became Pilseung who seems a bit lost even though still stubborn and good hearted. I want to know why he changed his name and became who he is now.
The same with Dora even if Im Soohyang isn’t an actor that evokes an emotional reaction in me. However, to be fair to her, the leads have chemistry asa I’m concerned and that is fortunate. So far, I have enjoyed their interactions and I hope the drama can tell a coherent, enjoyable and emotionally resonant story to the end. Here is asking too much but let’s hope.

1

the mom that abandoned the ML as a baby in this show is the same woman who abandoned the FL (Dan Dan) in "Young Lady and Gentleman". Typecast, much?

I think K-drama lives on typecasting. You see an actor, you know if they will be a villain or a good guy. In a bad drama, it helps make up for sloppy writing. In a good drama, it gives the viewer an extra layer of security that they know what will happen- just like tropes and happy endings.

3

Required fields are marked *

I just wish that KDs had not fallen into these patterns. Clearly, it has worked for them and much of their audience but they could be and should be so much better. With the wealth of acting talent (notwithstanding the duds and those with connections) that SK has, they should be making many more coherent, captivating yet more naturalistic dramas. I loved “Like Flowers in Sand” and miss watching it, marvelling at how good most of it was and anticipating impatiently for the next eps. It was such a gem of drama which reminded me that it can be done so much better when poignancy and emotional engagement is earned but not manipulated through trope after trope. Some tropes are beguiling and they have a place for sure in the KD world. Others are tiresome, laughable and distracting. I hope more KDs have the courage to stand out and be counted. May the good ones leave a lasting imprint.

In the first two episodes of this show the younger version of our FL is definitely not beastly. We are speculating that she becomes so in her adult version in no small part due to her beastly mother.

There has been a true surfeit of beastly women in kdramaland recently. At least this mom is not quite as bad (so far) is the one who abused the viewers in the previous weekender.

To those of us who enjoy weekenders and dailies- when they are done right and well- the many episodes are a feature, not a bug.

In truth, simply because the first two episodes are simply a prologue to what follows, the actual stories in the new weekender have not started yet. It is really way too soon to judge whether the new weekender will be worth watching our not. But the young actor and actress in those episodes did a terrific job of setting the scene for the story to come.

Episodes 1-2
I'm with Emma in adoring the younger incarnations of our leads. I hope there are LOTS of flashbacks coming as well as this first complete week with them.

I definitely don't blame @Mazarin at all for thinking that the young ML (Moon Sung-hyun) is played by the older ML (Ji Hyun-woo)...they really do look alike, even if it's mainly the perm fooling me!! I hope I end up as in love with "him" as "he" grows up. I'm already inordinately fond.

The young FL (Lee Seol-a) is well known to many of us and is hitting it out of the park as well. Seriously, she was in Samdal-ri, Park's Marriage Contract, Destined with You, and where I remember her most from, Stealer: The Treasure Keeper. She deserves all this work for sure.

That said, anyone else feel sorry for Seol-a's ears?? Man, was it cold as they were filming, and MAN were her ears super-red!!! Someone get that young lady some earmuffs!!!!!

The prologue was completed at the end of episode three, our main story begins with episode four. It appears that our writer has actually planned out story arcs that are far wider than the general initial description of this show. This prologue gave us something far more than a standard cliche childhood connection trope. Elements were put in place that will play a big part in the story and we learned a great deal about many of the characters as well.

But so far it's helping that I'm consistently skipping all the scenes where FL or ML don't appear.

I gave it a try this weekend and will keep going for now. The ML and FL had appeal in both their past and present-day depictions. There’s enough backstory that we understand why the FL might be considered “difficult.” Try surviving with that stage mother! I’ve learned from previous weekenders to fast-forward liberally through the screeching and whining, which is a big time-saver. And I’m looking forward to the workplace scenarios as the characters work on their show together. It feels like a chance to see them interact in a variety of ways beyond the usual willful misunderstanding.

They've not explained it yet, although we saw his mother struggle with remembering that he'd changed his name at the beginning of episode 4.

My guess is that it's narratively important (and of course we'll eventually hear why he made that choice), but we also needed to have a reason why our FL wouldn't immediately have recognized him by name...yeah?

It's cute how she calls him "curly-haired assistant director" tho. I hope that keeps up :)

Me too. Seon-ha is right that it is a convenient narrative device but I also think it signifies a painful transformation from the teenager that we saw who was to the adult that he has become. I wrote more about this in a comment above so won’t rehash it but this will likely be an important plot point.

I only have one question so far. Are they going to keep Ji Hyun Woo's hair crazy curly for the whole 50 episodes, or are they going to chop it off/straighten it as a plot point at some stage? I have curly hair and love seeing the curly-haired actors but don’t enjoy how much dislike curls get on DB. I’m not having a go at you so please don’t misunderstand. I know the curly-haired male adult actor in KDs signifies somewhat/entirely troubled character who is struggling to make his way in a brutal world but Pilseung is functional and reliable so at least this archetype isn’t entirely true in his case (so far).

It doesn't seem to be the case in this drama though, it's more about the birth secret right? There have been so many references to him being the only curly haired person in the family, that there will surely be a TA-DA moment when his birth dad turns up? Or maybe I have watched too many makjangs lately!

P.S.: Ji Hyun Woo has played a very gorgeous curly haired character before in the movie "Everglow":https://www.allkpop.com/article/2021/06/ji-hyun-woo-talks-about-filming-romance-with-70-year-old-actress-go-doo-shim-in-everglow

What gets me about Pil-seung's curly hair isn't the "curly" part...it's that he's had the same haircut since he was 18, and he's now 33.

I'm getting the impression that, as a character, he's "never grown up." He even still dances like he's a kid :)

For this reason, I'm with @al118 in wondering if they'll have him cut his hair eventually, less because of any innate bias against curly-headed folks, but to demonstrate a (final) coming-of-age...

It'd be a shame, thoughm because I love how both actors (the younger and, ahem, the more mature) flounce their hair around while running. I find it adorbs.

I agree. My original comment was just a little rant about the often derided perms resulting in the curly-haired styles. I’ve liked most of these curly hairstyles probably partly out of a sense of solidarity but also because they look good.

1

@dncingemma Is this the moment where I admit--as someone whose hair was SO STRAIGHT and stringy as a teen--that I had a perm when I was 18 cut in almost the exact same shape as Dae-chung/Pil-seung's hair???

Only my hair was shaped even more like an American football (left-to-right, I mean).

1

I’m glad you confessed during our convo. Having curly hair hasn’t been easy so I get the need to transform yourself. I have only straightened my hair once and didn’t like it so it was back to the curls for me.

1

Curly hair? If they don't then what happens to that great "Curly-haired assistant" moniker? Will someone else with curly hair appear? It's a fun possibility.

I actually waited two days before watching the fourth episode, because I knew that this is where our main story begins. I wanted to gain that perspective.

Someone said that after just four episodes of this drama that it felt like we had already had more of a story than in the entirety of LYOL. It also feels that way to me.

This show has started really well. The first four episodes have been better than we have seen in a long time. I hope that it keeps it up.

At this point we have a complete introduction. There is more than enough here to develop into a complete fifty episode show.

IMO there are a number of boring characters in this Weekender. I hope they become more interesting otherwise it will be a slog. I still really enjoy seeing our main leads interact and wish there were many more scenes with them. Right now, they’re still setting up the characters but it would be good for the leads to have more in depth interactions. For my sake!
Poor Dora. Having worked consistently and probably not having much to show for it. When will she realise that her predatory mother has been defrauding her and gambling her earnings? Btw, where are Dora’s two brothers? When will they show up as adults? Functional or dysfunctional?

Dude with the wedding ring is her older brother! I think he's a hoot, actually...with his sleazy suits, and clingy-sleazy demeanor (at least with younger women). I look forward to how the two of them (Do-shik and Myeong-dong) circle around one another for the rest of the drama--although I do NOT like how she said she'd stick with him "even if" it ends as a tragedy (or words to that effect). That sounded like foreshadowing if I've ever heard it. I would like this writer to leave the tragedy to Queen of Tears, please.

Also, I already hate Do-ra's hateful mom sooooo much I can't watch scenes of her alone. GAH.

Please note that the show description for this hangout- which matches the original network description for this show bears little resemblance to the much more accurate "Synopsis" which Viki now gives for this weekend drama. Form the beginning I noted that that original plot description would at best only have justified a 12 hour drama. The new description is much better and leaves room for fifty episodes of plotlines.

The mystery here is why the network posted that original plot description to begin with. It may not be totally misleading- it is possible that the fall from grace helped back on her feet by pure hearted PD will be a story arc within this show. But it is still a curiosity.

It is amazing how some of my initial perceptions changed from the beginning of the show. The biggest is how the show went out of its way in episode 6 to show our "Nasty Golddigging Mistress" in a very sympathetic light as having been the late Chairman's victim- and that his wife was quite sickly which exposes the 'she was killed by the stress caused by their affair' as totally nonsensical. The truth was laid out for us by the late Chairman's sister- who forced the family to acknowledge that once marriages start happening in the family that whole charade would have to cease.

Her great aunt includes the possibility that her brain damaged grandniece Ma-ri might be one of those who would marry. What an interesting possibility- which actually touches on the issues of those with disabilities. If the show does go that route, I wonder how it will be handled? The possibility of such a story line has now been foreshadowed by statements both from her great aunt and from Ma-ri herself. I do not count on that story happening, however, because our experience with our most recent weekenders strongly suggests a very strong streak of cowardice in the ranks of the KBS brass.

It looks like the primary villain of this piece is our FL's mom- who has all the hallmarks of a true sociopath.

Seonha's description of our second couple- Myung-dong and Do-sik- circling each other is undoubtedly true for the next few episodes- but there is the strong possibility that Do-sik got Myung-dong pregnant during their one-night stand so that would not last for the whole show.

We are now at the point where the stories have just begun to truly unfold. Nest week will bring more clarity.

When the major networks stopped producing k-dramas in house, they now hire production companies to organize and film shows. The main production hub is in Paju, where CJ ENM has built a new TV studio, the largest in the country, housing 13 sound stages, including one that is about the size of the White House. Stage two is the home of a virtual production studio modeled after the technology used by Walt Disney.
There are other various production sound stages all around Seoul, including in Digital City near Mapo. The only stages kept by KBS at its headquarters are for music shows.

Some of the ages sure don’t make any sense. Among them are Pilseung’s (adoptive) father who looks only slightly younger than his mother. And, the great aunt that seems not to be that much older than Mari’s dad! Bonkers!

She is 26 years old at this time.

I don’t know about the rest of you but I was disappointed by Pilseung badmouthing Dora again especially after that constructive and mature discussion they had. I know a weekender thrives on manufactured conflict but it wasn’t fair to Dora. I felt sorry for her. She is certainly no worse than the garlic chewing dim actor.

Episode 7
Loved it. I'm fully back on board. Heavens but 우리 Pil-seung-i is adorable. They've figured out the lighting that makes him look closer to 30 years of age than his real 40 too 😉

I'm skipping all of Do-ra's mom (and, frankly, Pil-seung's mom) still, or at least, only reading the lines at each 10 second skip. That helps.

I'm also completely fascinated that we're already at the name reveal...is Do-ra not going to believe him for a while or something?

Episode 8
OMG. I'm so old and drama-deprived. Both. That was so adorbs. When she woke up and ran to her oppa--and the potty humor was there front-and-center. I couldn't even roll my eyes because I was so taken by the setup. Loved all of the OTP scenes today.

I am also fond of the setup with our 2M-hottie-L because I can skip most of it except when he's fawning over how well he's doing "wooing" Do-ra.

Also, the set-up for the half-brother-to-half-sister marriage setup is juicy makjang weekender. Luuuurve.

Don't care at all about the lame investment bilking. But hey, maybe something interesting will come of that. Also don't care about crazy Aunt trying to get her way with a new son for our sexagenarian CEO. It's cool, I suppose, if that's something he wants?? Or, yeah, probably not.

Such fun!!! I know for sure that part of the reason is that our lead couple isn't running a laundromat, or working in a gym, or running a restaurant--so maybe I'm a weekender snob. But wasn't it even slightly amusing on the beach when they were shooting a weekender-style scene in a weekender making fun of, um, weekenders? No? Am I just THAT drama-deprived? Perhaps.

PS: I can see not being interested in our secondary couple, but the way Do-sik was like, "Actually, she's cute...but feels like an aunt...but is cute..." I mean, how wonderfully awkward and also totally reasonable is that while totally being awkward?? I am really enjoying this drama, OldLaywer "skip what you want" weekender style.

It took me a while to learn to skip what you want to. I am happy to see that you have learned it too. Really it just makes sense in the context of a fifty episode show: Somewhere in all of those hours there is bound to be something that you just don't find worth watching.

Loved the beach scene. I am finding Pil Seung and Dora much much more adorable now that they can be themselves in front of each other. Aaaaaaaaw. I am definitely watching it "skip what you want" style though.

I’m basically skipping 60% of each episode and focusing only on the OTP, the birth mother and Mari.

Interesting! What engages you about the Ma-ri storyline?

I like her personality. She knew about commercial surrogacy being illegal in SK and that is an indication to me that she is capable of understanding and learning complex issues. I hope she has a storyline which will treat her fairly.

Me too.

I’m wondering what will they do to keep the OTP apart after this sweet reconnection. Misunderstandings, lack of communication, birth secret reveal, unhappy marriage/s to other people before finding each other again and becoming united in the face of their families’ objections?
