Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (February 17, 2024)
by DB Staff
So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…
missvictrix
My Happy Ending: I missed you this week, Show.
Marry My Husband: Man versus Truck of Doom was a super fun moment, as was the subsequent love confession, but I’m willing to admit this show is getting a little carried away. But, it’s okay. Really, it’s okay. It’s still fun — loads of fun — and I’m ready for wherever we go during our finale week. Wheeeeeeee~
Unlock the Boss: I needed a fun, cute, and bingeable comfort watch and I landed here. And yay, the first two eps have been just what the doctor ordered. I love my Potato Boy, Chae Jong-hyeop. This show won me over about the time they put him in a checkered suit and had him stick up for the ajumma janitor. *Hearts*
DaebakGrits
Currently covering: Flex x Cop
Captivating the King: I don’t watch many saeguks because I loathe all the palace politics, but I started this drama for one reason, and one reason only: Jo Jung-seok. And I continued watching for… well, Jo Jung-seok. I love, love, love him, and he’s doing so well in his role as the king. I’m stocking up on tissues, though, because I can’t see this drama ending happily.
Marry My Husband: Still here for every juicy moment, even if I still think the whole “stealing fate” logic has more holes than a screen door. Then again, if I’m here primarily for the trashy revenge and the tall, hunky hero, then who am I to complain?
Doctor Slump: Things I enjoy: the hate-to-love romance, the open talks about mental health, the loving family, the secondary pairing and their kids, and the uncle’s wig, which is practically its own character. Things I don’t like: the plastic surgery murder mystery and anyone with an M.D. who isn’t a part of our main couples. I usually don’t mind a side of suspense with my romance, but this one didn’t need it — especially not one so elaborate.

Live watches:
Dr Slump
Our sweet drama that brings joy every episode.
Eye love you -Japanese
Really light romantic fantasy drama with our smiling boy Chae Jonghyeop. It has the usual competent woman in a prominent role unable to act as an adult when in certain situations e.g. being able to meet her basic needs of planning ahead for meals or reading the room in relationships but it is still a sweet watch.
Queen of divorce
Looking forward to seeing the gang at work on the next batch of cases. Side note: Writernim, it’s 2024 so even in a light hearted show where we can forgive a lot, we would like our female characters to be more nuanced in their skill set than weaponising sex to achieve their goals.
Between him and her
Another ending that we know will not turn out as it seems. She will have two hours to kill and wants to use it to draw a line in the sand that is trench deep as the previous line was clearly not visible enough.
Our love triangle - college based web drama
Very basic story around actor friends who had a drunken one night stand and then the male lead disappeared with no contact for two years. He returns to university and expects to pick up the friendship and is confused by the cold shoulder response.
Bingewatch corner:
Extraordinary You
Started rewatching this and enjoying it so far.
Webtoon corner:
Second lead syndrome happy to see my suspicions are finally being played out🥰

HiTV app which was recommended by a beanie a while back and has been filling in gaps ever since. I am aware it’s only available in some places and has recently changed so newbies don’t have the same experience. It uses machine automated subs which are later modified for some dramas.

Oh, I don’t have much luck with machine subs. I will wait till some streaming service picks it up. They have to! It’s Chae Jong Hyeop.

I don’t usually do those kinds of subs either but for him I was prepared to chance it. They are not too bad most of the time.
The good news is it’s coming to Netflix in April but that was three months too late for me, it’s a one episode a week drop and I was getting annoyed knowing it was out there, I nearly watched it raw!

I was on board with this until I saw the trailer--and now Reply's review clinches it. I don't think I can do this, even for CJH (and no @hopefulromantic this is not a rehash of our old argument about smiley bois 😂).
The acting style was too stilted, the frame rate was that of a weekender, and the plot was pretty darn thin-seeming.
Feel free to throw any/all tomatoes my way. I think I'm having a grumpy morning 🍅

Fumi's drama is typical and underwhelming and more marketing because they took in a korean guy and one more guy has new drama in line. Taishi as usual getting sidelined. Even yamada and takumi got more value naw. shotaro raised his value in 2023. Taishi need new agency and a new ambitious manager.

ONGOING
Queen of Divorce - Nonsensical cases and loads of pointless scenes like the MIL turning up to slap them and no one does anything?! Fully expecting the 'kiss' to be a k-drams special thumb-on-lip fakeout.
The Chaebol-Cop Show - I missed this show when it wasn't around.
Knight Flower - I loved that the good guys communicated and plotted quickly. Feel bad for the super-nice not-husband for having such an awful dad.
Sejak - Hee-soo is nowhere close to as smart as she thinks she is. JJS was so good in Ep. 8.
Doctor Slump - Some really nice conversations between our leads. The cameo was funny.
C-DRAMAS
Not enough time this week 😭.
Still watching Judge Dee's Mystery (up to Ep. 14).
Haven't had time to catch-up with Always on the Move and Amidst a Snowstorm of Love. Will finish the latter over the weekend now that express episodes are out.

I am not watching all that much right now but the three I am watching we have in common:
1. Kdrama: MBC’s KNIGHT FLOWER (Viki US). It has been a delight. It has given me my sageuk fix. Last 2 episodes this weekend. No idea yet what my next sageuk will be.
2. Cdrama: JUDGE DEE’s MYSTERY (Youku) (Youtube). Though episode 11. I was trying to stay current by watching the episodes on the Youku international app (which I subscribed to) and chrome casting the episodes from my iPad to the tv (first time trying to do this) but I gave up after episode 10 and decided to wait until Youku releases the episodes on Youtube. It is a much better viewing experience. JDM doesn’t have the intensity for me of lets say RIPE TOWN (2023) (Viki US) but I am enjoying it.
3. ALWAYS ON THE MOVE (iQIYI). I watched through episde 10 and pulled the ‘emergency’ brake. I enjoyed seeing a drama set in the late 1970s around the railroad (I come from railroad people) but the story didn’t seem to be progressing much and add on the love triangle, noble idiocy and I said to myself I can’t take another 29 episodes of this. However, I really enjoyed the older mentor played by actor Ding Yong Dai. As soon as I saw how this actor moved and spoke I thought ‘this guy is the Chinese Spencer Tracy’ lol. Sorry Spence adios.

Agree on Knight Flower being a delight! It really surprised me with how funny and tightly written it is.
I feel you on the casting-from-app travails. Not just Youku, I've had issues with all of them 😅. I agree on the intensity being a bit lacking - it's pretty obvious who the big-bad is in every case so far. So I like watching each case set at one go - makes it feel more like I'm watching a 4 episode mini-drama lol.
Interesting to hear about Always on the Move. I looked up the MDL comments and they seem to have similar issues with the love triangle. Hopefully, it won't be too bad or it might be a drop for me too.

ZRY's case? Really!!! To have Zhou Yiwei and ZRY in the same drama. That is a special treat. I'm also up to 11 and watching on YT. I'm enjoying it, although some bits stretch credibility. When they lobbed up on the shore and her hair was still perfect, although his had escaped his neat do.... But I am finding it hard to guess ahead, which is good, even if the big bad is obvious. I still need to know how and why did they do it? Ripe Town sounds like it's worth a watch. Disclaimer: I'm a die-hard ZYW fan.

@jorobertson, daramalover4ever, I can definitely recommend the cdrama historical mystery RIPE TOWN (2023) (Viki US) (12 eps.). It is one of my 2023 favorites. Gripping all the way. I was originally drawn to it because of character actor Ning Li. It was my introduction to ML Bai Yu Fan who gave a wonderful performance as a young bailiff determined to solve the mystery of the death of his Shifu.

I cannot stress enough how much I'm enjoying Ripe Town!!! BYF is stunning - both vulnerable and innately shrewd at the same time. Surprisingly convincing. But why does it remind me of the 1st season of True Detective? Is it the grisly, almost ritualistic murders or the OST at the end, or the gritty feel? I keep on wanting to call it Dirt Town. Most of all I love the moral dilemma at the heart of it. Was his master a good man or corrupt?

CRICKET - 2024 - FUN n funny -
Australia vs. Pak - competitive test matches but in between funny moments too - like batsman losing wickets altogether from both teams. Overall, nice watch
India Vs. South Africs - another funny test matches - batsman losing wickets altogether - comedy all around.
4 teams - 2 test matches and losing 5+ wickets within 10 runs is surely funny.
Australia Vs. Westindies - interesting matches - same thing - west indies bowling did well batsman couldn't handle top australian bowling. Both teams top 5 batsman didn't performed but fight was on.
2nd test match - one of the biggest test matches of 2024. Westindies won against Australia. Australia was in trouble but west indies let go the pressure n then guys kept fighting the australia and won a very competitive match. beautiful beautiful test match.
The young boy shamar joesph did amazing job.
New Zealand vs. South Africa - South africa is for t20 league and that gave kiwis chance to have 1st ever series win over south africa - money is now affecting international test cricket a lot.

Knight Flower
Can’t believe it’s ending this week. Not ready to say good bye to this show. I need a HE!!
Doctor Slump Continues to be charming. I am really liking the female lead character and PSH is doing a great job here.
Also, the brother needs to get a job. Why is he so confident he will inherit the building? Because he is male?
Shop for Killers : didn’t get time this week. Also, can’t watch two dramas of same genre at the same time. Will continue once I wrap up Killer paradox.
A killer Paradox I watched 7 episodes.
This is SSK’s show through and through. That man is a joy to watch. His every expression, his body language m, his dialogue delivery is just so awesome. I loved the first four episodes but now it feels like a chore. There was so much potential to work with just the two leads but they added this Song Chon character who pulled the whole drama down. I feel they did Choi WooShik bad. They hardly explored his emotions or state of mind once he realizes his power. They turned the attention to Roh bin.
Will finish Ep 8 this weekend.
Queen of divorce It’s fun in parts. This weeks case was a bit much. The dead kiss was disappointing. It killed whatever chemistry our leads had.
Marry my husband
It just crashed to a point of no return. I will finish it, rant it and earn my bean. 😰
Plan to watch
Cdrama- I see a new Sandra Ma drama called Islands. Viki US says it’s coming soon. So will check it out once it’s available.

Knight Flower (through ep. 11) - I wish the show would give us the tiniest hint of a happy ending approaching. 😬
Dr. Slump - yes, the brother's line about inheriting the building was a loud false note. Mom's pretty young, and he clearly loves her, but he's open about waiting for her to die? (My uncle did this IRL - spent his whole adult life hanging around in the family home, mostly not working, waiting for his promised inheritance. Grandma lived to be 98. 😈)
MMH - I just think of it as The Car Crash Show and that allows me to keep enjoying it, but I certainly won't miss it.

Queen of Divorce
The cases are weak, but I'm staying for Kang Kiyoung... and strangely also for Oh Minseok and I can't help but wish the story was slightly tweaked - that the murders and all the bad was done by Mom (while making path for her son) and we got more of the (melo) love story of Noh Yul Seong and Sara.
What I don't like much is seeing Sara using kisses on uri Lawyer to provoke ex-hubbie. 😠
Dr Slump
People may be watching mainly for Park Hyungshik, but I'm watching for Park Shinhye. She is not my favourite actress, but this time I really enjoy her straightforward slightly on the spectrum Haneul. I'm also enjoying Yoon Park, but there is too little of him and his story and I'm afraid that instead of frenemies to friends and new start at his clinic we are heading to darker waters of Macau crimes and back stabbing friends.
Marry My Husband
It is a pity the show turned too simple and is hanging too much on that One Fate Which Rules Them All (I also find Jiwon plain stupid for (repeatedly) telling Sumin or Minhwan her true thoughts/plans).
We did get two really good scenes this week though: the confrontation between Sumin and Jiwon... and the talk between Seokjoon and Jooran. Really really good. I'm also here for the budding friendship (and hopefully soon romance) of Chef and Heeyeon.
I'm still continuing with Live Your Own Life and I'm a week behind with Unpredictable Family.

LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE (Ep 40-41) Last week’s dramatic cliffhanger turned out to be a dud explanation. This late in the game, HS is saddled with more family grief (mom is back to her insanity, older bro got fired, mid brother knocked up tutor). The Kang family is in shambles with birth secrets, cooked books, and multiple criminal investigations. This week’s cliffhanger is not as suspenseful as it should seem. Adding a new character, HS’ runaway dad, this late in the run is another symptom of how desperate the production crew is trying to get the script back on the rails. Yes, a lot of action happened this week, but none of it was good execution of a coherent story.
TARGET (Don’t Buy The Seller) (2023) Soo-Hyun (Shin Hae-Sun) buys a washing machine on a website for used merchandise. When she receives the washing machine, she realizes that the machine is broken and that she has been scammed. The police are overwhelmed by cyber crimes. She becomes angry and leaves comments on the website warning other users about the seller. She receives a threatening message from the seller that escalates into terror. This is a standard thriller plot that was well done in its execution as the director was also the co-screenwriter. However, the seller’s motivations were never explained. Above average for the genre.

Since we're buzzing about actresses, I thought I'd view my current dramas through my favorites. First off, and how can I not, the adorable and amazing Lee Hanee aka Honey Lee in Knight Flower. I have not enjoyed an actress doing physical comedy this much since Mr Queen. It's a rare talent. While the debate rages around Shin Se-kyung in Captivating the King, it is Park Ye-young as a secondary antagonist whose suppressed rages and desperation have left a stronger impression upon me. That's acting, folks. There's no repressing the scene-stealing Song Ha-yoon in Marry My Husband. If this wreck is to be salvaged, I'd put all my focus on her, show.
Jeong Ga-hee as the snappy forensic doctor plays a small but memorable role in Flex x Cop. I’m looking forward to her unbuttoning our buttoned up 2ML. And last, but not least, all the props to Park Shin-hye in Doctor Slump for inhabiting one of the most relatable and convincing characters I've encountered on screen. It's remarkable that you are the highlight of the show for me, well, for now, but keep on going.
I can't say much about the women or anything else in the Queen of Divorce. Dropped. And also The Undateables. I'll break the theme here to say, I'm so sorry Namkoong Ming. I couldn't do it, not even for ya. Till we meet again.

Thank you for presenting your comment in this way. I enjoyed reading this rare post about what the female actors are bringing to the drama. The focus in terms of casting, writing and make up and wardrobe always seems to be heavily slanted to the male lead’s advantage that I feel for all the female actors regardless of their skill set.

There are plenty of commentators who will always praise the strength of the female leads, past, present, and future!!
For me, though, I think what's happening is that they're writing more women for women. They've always written the men for women...
And, if I can state my case again (that no one needs to buy, except I'm right 😘), they're even writing woman-as-men-for-women (Sa-ra in Queen of Divorce)

She is! I love actors who comprehend their characters and the time period and perform their roles accordingly.
Noksu in "Rebel" was a grey character, and Honey Lee brought all her traditional talents and made her shine even brighter. She is natural in comedy, and "Flower That Blooms At Night" is a double treat.
Sageuks excels in portraying unforgettable female characters brought to life by exceptionally talented actresses.
Mishil and Queen Seon Deok. (Go Hyun-Jung and Lee Yo-won)
Dae Jang Geum and Lady Choi. (Lee Young-ae and Kyeon Mi-ri)
Queen Insu, Iron Empress (Chae Shi-ra and Kim Mi-sook)
Noksu (Rebel - Honey Lee) (original Jang Noksu - Park Ji Young)
Go Ae-shin and Kudo Hina (Mr Sunshine) - Kim Tae-ri and Kim Min-jung.
Dong Yi - Han Hyo-joo.
Damo, Hwang Jini, Empress Ki - Ha Ji-won.
Nokdu Flower, Six Flying Dragons - Han Ye-ri.
Princess's Man, Painter of The Wind, War of The Arrows - Moon Chae-won.
Painter Of The Wind, Empress Myeongseong, etc. - Moon Geun-young.
King's Daughter, The Duo - Seo Hyun-jin.
Shin Don - Seo Ji-hye.
My Dearest - Ahn Eun-jin.
Conspiracy in the Court - Jung Ae-ri and Kim Ha Eun.
The Face Reader, Jang Hui-bin, Under the Queen's Umbrella, etc. - Kim Hye-soo.
The King’s Affection, etc. - Park Eun-bin.

@attiton @kiara @wonhwa Apologies for any offence caused by my comment.
Sorry for the negative implications in the unclear message I gave in my first response. The uniqueness I was referring to was a female focused roll call that includes the whole list of watches. What tends to happen in our weekly summaries is a shoutout to one actor in one drama, the storyline in another and the cinematography or chemistry etc. in another.
Apologies for my poor grammar. The second half of my comment should have been a new paragraph. It was referring to my perspective on the context women are working into before they open their mouths to perform.

Kodra aka Qanon something
February 18, 2024 at 4:43 AM
I understood your meaning behind your last paragraph and I agree with it in some of the dramas I have watched. But not in all. As a new observant of the industry, I find that kdramas are doing a great job giving women a voice and being the actual lead better than the westerns ones. Of course, the fact that the female writers dominate the industry helps. There are a plethora of dramas writen for women and showing our struggles in life which is one of the reasons I become a fan. But, still, I find it hard for some actresses in some. You must know by now my love for the two dramas, MD and CtK. In both the ML are not only very charismatic but, as I found out watching them, powerful stars in the industry. In both shows, the FL were not at the same level of celebrity status and I sensed a kind of responsibility of the ML to sort of carry the show. I don't know if this is a general trend in kdramas, but it is very obvious that the ML in both show seem to have a say in directing their scenes while the FL seem to be following their lead. AEJ kept praising the help she got from "her senior" and you could see SSK just following JJS when he is co-directing and changing some of the scenes. But where NKM was really focused on elevating AEJ performance and she was helped by having a great written role, I don't see that in CtK. On the same note, when AEJ was receiving some hate online around ep. 10, NKM came right away with a mesage supporting her. And kept on doing that even after it ended. I found it interrsting that in his MBC award speach he spoke of some tension with the PD and made me think that he maybe got to involved with the show. On the other hand, SSK has been getting a lot of hate online on all of other english platforms I am reading. It has been constant and abundant since the show has aired. My surprise was to read it here and I thought that she has had a scandal in the past. I assume that it is the same in korean forums and it makes me wonder how will she ever be casted again. I wish she would have gotten the support of the cast or PD by now, assuring somehow the fans of the show like AEJ got. I feel that she was not as protected during filming and airing by the more powerful people involved in the show. The role is a dificult one, being almost the antgonist thus far, the plots the FLis taking are not giving her a good material for her to shine and during the scenes she is overwhelmed by JJS charisma, both off and on screen. I wish she was not such a shy and proper lady, but probably it is hard since she doesn't have a good fan base to be more demanding as others.

Shin Se Kyung has been getting bad reviews on DB since 2009, so it is nothing new.
Some actresses seem to never be able to get into the Beanies' hearts, Shin Se Kyung, Yoona, Park Shin Hae are among them.
Now looking at how positive the reaction to PSH in Doctor Slump is, I hope SSK and YN will soon find their breakthrough roles too.
I have always liked all 3 of them so I have particularly noticed the criticisms through the years.

Yes, the positive reaction to PSH is a reminder that all it takes is one good role. And it's pretty amazing considering how beloved her co-star is here. Beanie minds are not set in stone. Wishing the others better roles/luck too.

I didn't read that as a negative comment at all, and I agree that actresses are often fighting huge structural obstacles in an industry that frequently relegates them to a handful of stereotypical "types" that exist to propel male characters' journeys forward.

Marry My Husband: I will get this bean even if it possibly gets dumber, which I didn't think was possible, but here we are.
Flex X Cop: I continue to be delghted by how much fun this drama is. It really is a Castle redux and I am not mad. Also the way the medical examiner plays with our resident taciturn cop is actually hilarious. Sir ASK HER OUT. Also, I assume lady's cop's father's corruption involves our chaebol as a child, because it is a kdrama without a childhood connection, I don't think so.
Captivating the King: I have never been captivated by JJS, but I get it now. I really really get it now. He is the best part of the drama and is a masterclass in acting. Take notes folks.
Dr. Slump: I continue to enjoy our enemies to friends in their friends stage. Although we know there is mutual crushing happening. It is great. Episode 3-4 are the gold standard for me though.

He could play the lone English speaker, sure, but how about he spends six months and gets as good at pronouncing Korean as he can, and plays the American who gets transferred by a Korean megacorp TO KOREA to participate in C-suite shenanigans. Folks are always being relegated to the US, why not invert it.
He'll lose out in the end, but it'll be delicious watching him play the game.

Doctor Slump: I was just going to be happy to see PHS on my screen for 16 episodes, but this is turning out to be something that I want to watch again as soon as I’ve seen it. No notes, please continue.
Older Dramas
Coffee Prince: Finished!
Things I loved: End of ep 10 onwards between our OTP, Han-gyul’s family’s slow acceptance of Eun-chan, Ha-rim getting as good as he got, all the emotional goodbyes, Han-gyul’s miraculously improving hair.
Things I didn’t: Everyone emotionally cheating on everyone else, almost everything about Eun-chan’s younger sister, Sun-ki’s fairly unresolved storyline, Han-gyul’s inability to deal with his early feelings any way except firing people.
Overall: I’m glad I watched. If I ever did again, I would skip over some stuff for sure, but lots was really fun. Also, in this age of wide-leg trousers, why can’t more of them look like Gong Yoo’s and less like Sung Hoon’s in…
Perfect Marriage Revenge: (up to ep 6) where they are seriously pretty tragic. However! This drama is super fun (as I was confident it would be) and I’m happy I waited to binge it. I love that everyone on the good team looks amazing and everyone on the bad team looks awful. I can’t decide if the person playing Yu-ra is a totally incredible actress, has the most punchable face in the world, or possibly both.

A Killer Paradox (Series review)
As was with Vigilante before it, dramas that deal with vigilantism always fall short when it comes to the writing: I’m left confused on the choice to sideline Tang’s growing internal turmoil in favour of Nan Gam vs Song Chon and all of the ill-fated drama between them (which was more a revenge show than anything). The fantasy element was left unexplained: I’m forced to mark this show down because of that, more so particularly here because it robbed us of any narrative tension if a wrong judgement call was made. I guess the one positive this show had was Son Suk Ku’s acting which never fails.
Knight Flower (Episode 9-10) - Mood: D+
It’s really a pity that the treason shenanigans will continue into the finale week because it’s kind of predictable how it’ll end up with good triumphing evil (with the exception being the mystery of Yeo Hwa’s brother). Well, at least the husband wasn’t an annoying plot device, though I’m sad we’re seeing so little of Yoon Hak and Yeon Sun. They’re the more compelling OTP.
Doctor Slump (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D+
I feel like the show is just chugging along with the classic jealousy arc for the main OTP while throwing bits and pieces for a suspicious friend and the secondary couple. The execution’s definitely lacking a lot but at least the show’s trying to portray mental health as not a plot device? The faster the writer resolves the setup, the better, but it seems like it’s really dragging.
Branding in Seongsu (Episode 5-8) - Mood: D+
The show could’ve been much better without the whodunit (the scar on multiple hands, sigh) and the 2nd leads (2ML is the overprotective one, 2FL is the mean one, such innovative characterisation). Imagine if it was like Freaky Friday and the soul swap was intentionally designed for the OTP to better understand their conflicting perspectives, which to be fair to the show, it didn’t ignore the fantasy element entirely and there was that tiny bit of the FL maturing. And I guess plus points for throwing in an entirely gratuitous abs shot even if it made no sense at all: the poor guy though, must have starved a lot.
Marry My Husband (Episode 13-14) - Mood: D
It’s almost impressive how quickly the drama took a dip in quality even when it was already mediocre to begin with that one wonders what could’ve been if the show was only 12 episodes and the big dramatic payoff came at the marriage of the two initial antagonists? Yes, I know there’s still the 2 deaths of the OTP to account for but now it’s just become so overly messy.

Can I say I'm a huge fan of yours! I just went back through all of your comments- not a stalker! Your reviews are so honest that I wanted to see what received A's and B's. The few that I have seen on your lists I also love- Attorney Woo, 30 not 17, Run On, Hospital Playlist. And Kang Tae Oh is in my top 3 ML actors. March can not come soon enough. You highlight some amazing OST. Even a song from The King EM- which is my favorite OST.
Everyone has different opinions and things they are looking for in their drama experience. I'm new to this world but am realizing quickly I'm going to disagree with most other people. But I'm not watching for them, I'm watching for myself and my happiness. Because of your reviews I now have a list of shows I can feel confident in watching and if I don't agree, I feel you are confident enough in your opinion that you won't care. That's a good thing.

February 17, 2024 at 5:08 AM
Captivating the King: 6.5
Dr. Slump: 8.1 A certain cameo + Park Shin-hye's mannerisms & facial expressions raise the score this week. She's impressing me here a more than in Alhambra or Sisyphus, and more this week than earlier in the show. I guess slightly over-the-top rom-com embarrassed flirtyness suits her.
Knight Flower: 8.0 Is the "flower" in the title the poison flower that makes that
Russian styletea?Flex x Cop: 7.5
Goryeo Kitan War: 404 Not Found
Love Song for Illusion: 2.0 The last few seconds of day 12 😠😖👎👎👎👎👎👎👎 As Javabeans & Girlfriday asked in their 2013 e-book "Does the amnesia fairy get paid overtime?" If she wasn't getting overtime back when they wrote that, she probably is now.
Queen of Divorce: 6.0 Day 5: They were doing good until that silly fire near the end. Day 6: was ok, but not good enough to wash away the memory of the flames.
Tip of the Week: a really lame tropey episode ending will will get remembered instead of being overwritten by whatever would have come later if you put the same garbage in the middle of the ep. The result is a 💩 score.

What I am watching:
_ My Happy Ending: there were no episodes last week.
_ Love song for illusion (12/16). Where do we come from? Where are we going? What's the plot in this show? Why was Park Ji Hoon lying on the floor and acting with his eyes for two episodes?
_ Iljimae (16/20). Now it's dragging a bit. I love Lee Joon Gi in this role, and the bond between Yong/Iljimae and his father.
_ C-drama My marvellous fable (3/15). A strange and stylish dramedy which mixes the main plot with modern fables, so it's like different dramas inside another drama.
What I have finished:
_ Mini k-drama Wednesday 3:30 PM. I binge-watched it in a few hours. Nothing new, nothing outstanding, lots of tropes, but it's a nice show. I have some issues with the ending, though.
_ Mini C-drama A familiar Stranger. Wonderful cinematography, decent OST, handsome male lead, and that's all. I liked Butterflied Lover (by the same PD) more.
_ Variety Nemo Travel: A trip to Spain (1/12): Kang Hoon, Shin Ye Eun and Yoon Park in Spain. They are so cute and funny!
Western shows:
_ Finished "Band of Brothers" (2001). Really good, as expected. A must-see.

Did Love Song for Illusion give you an existential crisis? Haha
I tell ya, it really and truly seems like the writer and/or director was like "Park Jihoon is good at doing this so I'm just gonna have him do this and how that happens is whatever"
He's good at the sad eyes, I'll have him be sad. He can do the cute thing, I'll have him be cute.
I wonder if this drama will count as a learning experience for anyone.
I also wondered if this would be considered like an American daytime soap opera. It's trope filled randomness that could fill a bingo card: birth secrets, amnesia, revenge, quick love stories, powerless people in positions of power, betrayal, traumatic childhood
There's not that many soaps nowadays but if you turn on any random one, fairly certain one of those plots would be featured in a given episode.

You are absolutely right, it has all the elements in a soap opera, but that's something which happens in other sageuks too (and good ones!).
The problem here is the pacing and the mess of a script.
And I don't understand what went wrong because this PD and this writer have worked in good dramas.

Love Song for Illusion No character is corresponding to their description but they are all boring.
Marry My Husband Can I get more of Ha Do-Kwon and less of everything else?
Queen of Divorce This drama is disapointing. I'm happy to see Kang Ki-young in a main role that looks a lot like his role in EAW and not like the one in Uncanny Counter...
Between Him and Her This show is so boring... Nothing is happening.
Doctor Slump The leads are fun together. I'm not interested in the death of his patient at all.
Knight Flower It's very entertaining and lovely.
Flex x Cop This show is very fun. I guess the FL's dad scandal is connected with what happened to the ML in the past.
Captivating the King JJS is really good in this role. He's such a good actor. He can be goofy like in What's Up or just following the script and be very sexy just by wearing glasses like in Jealousy Incarnate.
A Killer Paradox I watch 4 episodes. I think I would have prefered if the ML who got this weird envy to kill was not depressed but the opposite, to see him struggling in his good life.
Branding in Seongsu So what? She's in new body and his cute face should make me forget how awful she was? Sorry but I didn't forget. The half-episode rythm doesn't work.
Amidst a Snowstorm of Love The rythm is really weird. I didn't catch there were 2 years that happened 😅 The actress has a clause about kiss on her contract? Because they're lovely and they have nice hugs (I never saw main characters sleeping so much in a drama and the day? How can they still sleep during the night? I sleep one hour during the day and I can't sleep later...) so I don't understand why they filmed so many scenes that looked intense for the FL to just put an end to it. It makes it worse than not doing it.

Oh, there are some but not a lot. But there are a lot of scenes where the ML is pretty intense and the scene will stop with the FL saying no for any reason.

Knight Flower: Wow! What a powerhouse Ep. 11! It even brought back some of the humor I’d been missing. I hope the finale features more Yeo-hwa and Soo-ho (the epilogues aren’t enough) and doesn’t waste too much time on the LSM. He finally stopped using wispy voice during the explosive last scene. Will his wife and son realize now what kind of person he is and help bring him down? Fingers crossed for happy ending that gives the OTP a future together.
Flex X Cop: This is my current fun watch. I'm so glad the crew has progressed past the enemies stage. Hurray for begrudging teamwork! The bonus scene of them eating together at Yi-soo’s house warmed my heart. I don't even mind the tropey childhood connection between him and her dad. Who else thinks his mother's death and her father's framing will prove to be part of the big conspiracy? We didn't get much of older brother in the most recent episode, but I hope he remains one of the good guys. The way he looked at the closed door in the old house was a bit suspicious.
Snowstorm of Love: Wu Lei and Zhao Jinmai portrayed young lovers so beautifully. There was the typical nationalist sports narrative woven into the closing episodes, but it didn't eclipse the sweetness of their slow-burning (but still hot!) romance. Also lovely -- their supportive friend group that was composed of relationship shippers (MVP here goes to Jiang Yang -- I hope his blind date appreciated what a catch he was.) No cartoonish villains or last-minute plot twists, just the story of two people who only have eyes for each other.
My Boss: Points for one of the best workplaces in any C-drama. I'd want to hang out with that cubicle group. Also, it had appealing secondary romances (something C-dramas tend to do better than K-dramas). At a time when real-life divorces can be difficult to obtain in China, I was glad to see the lawyer ML make a statement that women should be encouraged "to protect themselves and cut their losses in time" instead of staying in bad marriages.
I also watched a pair of movies (thanks to a shortage of midweek shows): My Neighbor Totoro and Mission Possible. Totoro might be the gentlest movie I’ve ever seen, and so insightful about children’s inner lives. And is there anything that Kim Young-kwang can't do? It was great fun seeing his persona flip from goofy private eye to deadly special-ops veteran (and back again).

The intense sadness coupled with the only-partial working out of childhood trauma, the representation of who gets to speak and who has to stay silent...the actual physics of the imaginary characters.

All the actors succeeded in making their characters feel real even without a ton of lines or screen time. And how great that Tan Ying made the first move on Yu Fei.

I’m glad to hear Snowstorm doesn’t change too much even in the last episodes. I’m still waiting for the last three to be available on Viki where I am

Not strictly what I have been watching this week ... but highly relevant for my interest in K-Drama. Posted it also on the Open Threat.
Hi guys, just came across this really interesting news video from Miss K-Drama YouTube channel : K-Drama Actors CALL OUT Netflix for Exploiting the Korean Acting Industry! — posted apparently only yesterday, Feb 16, 2024.

LIVE WATCHES
Marry My Husband
I'm still enjoying this one. Skimming all the Yu-ra (female extra-villain) parts, but that's better than needing to skim the OTP parts!! I very much love Su-min (female normal villain) as a character, and am also now looking forward to a possible redemption arc for her. I mean, I am often like this with good, solid, female villains--there are ways that I know just how she feels, and she deserves a chance to live and learn. Who says that only a "bad fate" can be shared...maybe in this new story line she ends up with someone else's "good fate!!"
FxC
Such a nice watch! Ahn Bo-hyun now needs to break out into song, I've decided. We'd all like to hear him sing, and also it'd be hilarious. Hopeful's on board...how about the rest of y'all?
Queen of Divorce
What's good about this show? Well, I love Kang Ki-young just as a concept, and the villain, while being portrayed as the absolute basest of horrible people, is quite simply hot. I don't actually have to deal with him in life, so...yeah. This show is pure fantasy. It's also not unlike Stealer in the capery-teamwork, and there’s a good dose of “what about the men?” which surely suits us all.
👉Also, did ya see that kiss?? Sa-ra is her own ML. It's official, and part of the fantasy.
Dr. Slump
I have thoughts about this drama that revolve around its use of tropes. It's not a traditional one. I think what's happening might be intriguing.
Between Him and Her
Probably haven't dropped this, per se. I think I'm going to wait to binge the final episodes all in one skim-FF go. I'll also totally count that bean. Beanatariat number-crunchers beware.

I was gonna say, "Wait and see...no one but me is getting anything good out of it," but actually, Cecilie, I do truly think you and I might agree on this one. If you're interested in a plot that's quite literally trying everything it can to flip stereotypical gender roles (poorly) all over the damn place, go to the darkside or something and find it--or just wait. It'll probably show up somewhere for Europe at some point! 🤓

Captivating the King - Adele set fire to the rain. Jo Jung-seok set fire to my screen.
Lee In is occupying free space in my Sejak head.
Live Your Own Life - I'd prefer it if we got this synergy between the two Tae-guys say 10 episodes earlier.
Madam Jang though. If she's not gonna have it she's gonna burn everything down with her.
Knight Flower Boss move by Jeong. I liked how he threw a wrench in his father's threats.
Marry My Husband - Wow! It seems I missed a few details cause I'm surprised to learn that Min-hwan had an affair with Yu-ra. I must have skipped some details.
Goryeo-Khitan War - Honestly... I'm pet peeved that I didn't have enough of Gam-chan and his wife's bickering. I light up once those two show up together on my screen.
I thought that was the end of Kim Eun-bo. I had already bade him goodbye in my heart. I liked how events were maneuvered to save him. It was just perfect and smart.
Queen of Divorce - You went into a hideous location sent to you🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️. Sa-ra can do better.
Dae-ki's backstory is👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽. I actually thought CEO lady was the one who engineered her parole. I didn't know it was her donation that kickstart it.
I'll pick up A Killer's Paradox when my mood settles in. I've watched a few clips of the ending though. I'm also trying to venture into a daily drama In Cold Blood (or The Two Sisters). The premise is the definition of makjang and crazy family entanglement and I'm up for it.

It will be so sad to say good bye to KNIGHT FLOWER and Park Soo-ho's puppy eyes. Loved the word play with 'honey' and all the other English words thrown in by the reappeared husband. Left minister is a great villain, so softly spoken, but deadly at the same time. His wife will not forgive him for endangering her beloved son! I would love to see her bringing about his downfall.
Enjoying bot QUEEN OF DIVORCE and FLEX X COP as light hearted dramas. I am not looking for logic or realism here.
I still cannot blame Shin Se-kyung too much for Mong-woo, the script and how her character is written is not her fault, although she looks a little bland opposite Jo Jung-suk, it must be hard to keep up with him. It is still a very good drama to watch.
Finished A KILLERS PARADOX and loved every minute! Probably the best performance of both Choi Woo-shik and Son Suk-ku, yet. Good twists and turns in the story as well. I hope Kim Yo-han is going to get more parts in future as well! Another great villain with Lee Hee-jun.

WATCHING BUT STILL WAITING FOR THE NEXT REALLY GOOD ONE:
KNIGHT FLOWER: Still fun to watch, mainly for lovesick Su Ho’s expressions.
DOCTOR SLUMP:
So-So: The Doctor parts.
Great: Hanging out and supporting each other during the Slump parts. The calm parts are so much better than the murder mystery and the frantic high school scenes that I hear Taylor Swift's "You need to calm down" every time those scenes come on.
NON-KDRAMA:
INCURABLE CASE OF LOVE: Classic Candy FL Is always apologizing and is called an idiot and a rock by the ML, but Sato Takeru smolders like noone’s business and may actually be the picture in the dictionary as the definition of tsundere. Somehow this jdrama works and is charming even though it is cliche heaven—casting is everything. Sweet short diversion while waiting for a great show.
MORNING SHOW: Season One has some really smart explorations of the Me Too issues and celebrity/news culture.

INCURABLE CASE OF LOVE is a fun watch. You are right about the ML being the very essence of Tsundere and that is what made it so fun to watch the FL getting under his skin and ultimately changing him.

DR SLUMP, squeeee. A real comfort watch, with numerous rewatches of each episode on glum weeknights. 🎉
KNIGHT FLOWER. I’m here for the couple, and possibly to see what’s gonna happen with the king, orabeoni & maid, etc. Could totally do without any scene involving left state minister and his wispy beard of doom. Will save up this weekend’s episodes to binge in one go.
Ongoing, older
25/21. You could call it a case of finale freeze, even though I have already watched this before and basically know how it ends. But I finished episode 14 Monday or something, and haven’t clicked PLAY since 😅🥹🫣
Happily binged through SEMANTIC ERROR, yesterday night, since @ceciliedk did a great PPL post about it 🫰😂👏

🤔 Would I be able to keep my memory from today? Or would I be oblivious as I was back then?
Either way: I really liked my university and early working years. I found my people. 🤓 I’d totally do that again, even if it means to go through the hard parts again. Some kdramas depict the emotional ups & downs of those years very well. While the heartbreak can be devastating, I can also focus on the positive parts like the beginning of very good friendships, finding out what you want to do in life and what you’re good at etc. I guess that’s why I still love slice of life dramas set in those years.
What I’d never ever evereverever want to do again, is Highschool & younger. 😬

My mom always told me that I would need to wait until I was 40 to really start enjoying my life. And while we can debate whether or not she was projecting what happened to her onto me--a story for my therapist, not for DB 🥰--she and I do also share genes and this was my experience. I vastly preferred being in my 40s to being in my 20s. I had so much more control over my own self and my destiny!
That's why I was honestly asking, though, because it sounded like you had a different take on things--and I was truly gripped by your narration. Thanks for sharing your take on this!!
I love slice of life too, by the way, but maybe that's why my favorite is Would You Like a Cup of Coffee, because while there's a young'un, there's an equal emphasis on those in middle age.

A coworker and I were recently reminiscing about our early 20s in our company. Not saying I'd choose to go back to the past, but it was a time when we had fewer "real life" responsibilities and more time to spend with our large friend group of fellow recent college grads who were working and hanging out together. A feeling of community was always there. (In some ways, it wasn't unlike a slice-of-life drama. Similarly led to a bunch of marriages, lol.)

YOU LIVED A K-DRAMA!! Or was it "Friends" 😘
Maybe that was what was wrong with my 20s. Not enough soju. Actually, there was a lot of "soju." I take it back that may have been the problem 😹 That, and I was living in one of the most "rat-race-y" cities in the entire world.
How wonderful that you are still working with those folks, though, and that you are able to reminisce like that! I'm jealous (in a good way, not a creepy way--was mentioning that it could have been creepy what made this creepy? Um...)

@attiton I don't think the bonds would've been the same had we been in an urban setting. Instead we were living in small neighboring towns and working odd (and long) hours, and truly our social lives revolved around our work colleagues. Bowling at midnight, anyone? I don't mean to cast it all in a hazy golden light -- of course it wasn't perfect -- but it really was a friendship incubator for those reasons and for that I'm grateful.

In "Couple on the Backtrack" where they wake up in their own younger bodies, I like how the husband obviously have the grown-up knowledge that makes it easy for him to be kind and cool, chill, because feelings and attraction just is less confusing for him.
It also makes it very uncomfortable that he uses it with those young people - it is just too easy for him, if you know what I mean?

I didn't have much of a good watching week.
Love Song for Illusion. I am so utterly confused what the writer and director were thinking with the choices they made. Maybe in universe, the characters' actions make sense but to me, it was non sensical and frustrating.
Marry My Husband. I hate the inclusion of Yura. She totally ruined the drama for me. Seeing her face puts me off and then seeing her actions keeps me off. It's just is so... hateful(?) That she wants Ji Hyuk now that he's happy and come alive *because* he's in love with someone else. She even knows they wouldn't have even been happily married; just living separate lives while married on paper but she wants that now because of a weird sense of entitlement? I can't. The best scene/moment to me was when Ji Hyuk was like "do you really want to do this with me when you know I can do what you do but better" and then we actually see that in action. Yura tried to coerce the chef to work for her, failed (cause he's a good guy). Ji Hyuk tried to coerce Yura's worker to work with him instead, succeeds (I guess because Ji Hyuk is scarier)
Knight Flower. I'm easy; the husband calling Yeo Hwa "Honey" just tickled me haha. I also liked how he said he liked good and cool people so wanted her to succeed in her actions. He's a cool and good person himself and I hope he gets a nice conclusion. Lord Seok is a hell of a bastard and I did like how all those in the know looked when they realized how far he was willing to go. Like "woooow, you really are just hopelessly, shamelessly despicable". I just thought all the actors did such a good job. I even thought the actor who plays Lord Seok is such a good actor. I don't necessarily want to see him in anything else cause I assume he plays alot of similar bad types (since he's so good at it) and I don't think I can stand it.
The Day of Becoming You (Cdrama). It's my first time watching a Chinese drama. It's okay but I don't feel a need to watch each episode. The body swap was fun and I think the actors did a good job of channelling both characters.
I've been watching reaction videos and even watching others' excitement and analysis can't get me into Moving haha. I still don't know why it was as successful as it was (even though I'm glad for its success because the cast and crew clearly did a good job. I like when the people I like have successes like these). The kids were not as interesting as the adults to me and it was slow going (to me). I did learn some new information that I certainly didn't notice when I originally watched it such a possibly clues or actions done such as I didn't know Bongseok (is that the lead kid's name?) was fed so much in order to weigh him down. Since I wasn't interested in the kids, I don't think I even noticed his eating or when it was actually said.

Shop for Killers: Finished! Enthralling and refreshing and didn't regret watching it, but by the end, I was like huh? Why were they after Ji-an again? And where was Jin-man all this time? The whole Bale and Babylon stuff isn't resolved. I feel like they should have cut out the re-treads and filled in the plotholes.
Queen of Divorce up to ep 5. Too much time spent on the evil ex-husband and his family. It was a bad move to tackle the ex-husband's 2nd wife's divorce case so soon in the drama. The drama works when the team is on the move. Not sure if I will continue.
Doctor Slump (up to ep 4): Really cute, but it doesn't make me feel the need to catch the next episode right away. Nice to watch when eating dinner. It sort of bums me out that the ML's friends were users.
My Boss: cdrama. Up to mid-way episode 30. It was going swimmingly (cute OTP with supportive people all around) and now we get the jealous past classmate who can't seem to take the hint that the ML doesn't like her romantically. Made need to use the FF button.
Fighting for Love (up to ep 5) costume cdrama. Liking it so far. The drama is more like a hero's journey featuring a FL, disguised as a man, travelling to seek revenge and making comrades along the way and working her way into being a general. Drama and actress actually make an effort to NOT appear feminine. The english title is an insult.
Hilarious Family up to episode 2. Family costume cdrama featuring a mom and her 4 single daughters. It reminds me of watching those hong kong TVB funny costume drama sitcoms I used to watch when I was young.
Amidst a Snowstorm of Love up to episode 4. Can't really get into it, though I want to. I appreciate how the FL is cautious about accepting the help of random people abroad even if they're your fellow countrymen. I like how the ML falls first, but wish he could tone it down on the staring.

Believe it or not, "Healer" is still on my watch list. I tend to be overwhelmed when some shows are so popular and noisy that I'd rather watch them later. I'll give it a shot after Honey Lee's show is over.
