Premiere Watch: A Killer Paradox

Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Crime, suspense, thriller
Episode count: 8

Reasons to watch: Forget a killer paradox, this is a killer pairing. Choi Woo-shik plays an ordinary student who, after accidentally killing a serial killer, can’t seem to stop himself from the newfound high of killing bad guys. All the while, bubblegum-snapping detective Sohn Seok-gu is following closely behind. Sure, this premise is completely predictable for Netflix fare… but they never had Choi Woo-shik x Sohn Seok-gu before, did they.

TL;DR: Let the leads themselves convince you to watch.

I'm not sure I'll watch this show--it seems a little too much like the U.S. show Dexter, which once the cleverness of the conceit wore off, got a little dreary. I can only root so much for a serial killer to kill serial killers while he is trying to escape a detective who, if things were different, would be a serial killer killing the serial killer who is killing serial killers.

But the joint promo by the actors was pretty charming--thanks for that @missvictrix !

Good on you to choose not getting in the way of this serial killer-y business. Ottoke I love Dexter Morgan.

It is apparent within the first couple of episodes that the killing is more of a series of cumulative disasters than a deliberate targeting of certain individuals - so far anyway. Dexter he is not, but he finds reasons to excuse himself post-murder by telling himself they deserved it. Just where this will lead is anyone's guess, but unlike Dexter, he doesn't work for the police department, he works in a convenience store, so any information he has on whoever he kills is sketchy at best and only comes to light after they are dead (again, so far). The thing is, if you keep getting away with random impulsive murders what does that do to you? Makes you think you can never be caught? Maybe. This is the question that intrigues me so I'll keep on watching.

In the end, I couldn't continue this after 2 episodes. Not because of the premise--obviously going in, I knew what that was. I just didn't find either character that compelling--actually less intriguing than Dexter. The ML was yet another bullying case, and the detective some sort of family issue with a dying parent-sorry, not worthy of serial murder or its investigation, in my book! Reading the hangout, I think you had to be a real fan of the two male actors to be enthusiastic about this one. I like the actors fine, but I needed a little more to go on.

I just started ep 4 and am finding it hard going. I am not a fan of how it has been edited and chopped, with constant leaping from past to present, and even some characters apparently alive and dead at the same time. Right now I feel like Choi Woo-Sik has hit me around the head with a hammer or a brick. If I can't take my eyes off the screen for fear of missing something, that makes me pretty grumpy. There are things I don't quite understand already and that is irritating. I feel like Rip Van Winkle. Did I really fall asleep for 20 years? I am stomping off to bed and will decide what to do about it tomorrow. No way am I rewatching 1 & 2 for a clue I don't remember. If I could kill the film editor I probably would!

I don't know if I'm going to watch this, but I want to give a shout-out to that gorgeous burnt orange velvet jacket SSG is wearing in the pic. LOVE.

True. He stood out because of the gorgeous color.

Because he's the only one in a different color, he looks like he exudes confidence which makes him even more charismatic and appealing.

The colour is beautiful for sure but it’s a pity the cut isn’t as good. It is gaping on the right lapel side. I normally don’t notice these things but picked it up this time.

I don't plan on watching this but the premise seems Dexteresque which is nice in a vigilante, justice fulfilling way.

I've never seen Sense8 but from what I heard about it, it was such a cool premise. I think it was filmed in different countries?
Must have been an expensive production

Love to watch an action/serial killer drama during the Lunar New Year holidays. I am so happy I will have six days off from work so I can catch up with this action laden drama that starred two talented actors, Choi Woo Shik and Son Suk Ku.
