Truman Capote was a New York City gadfly who endured in the publishing epicenter by socializing with the rich and powerful. At his peak, he threw the masked Black and White Ball in November, 1966 in honor of Kate Graham, head of the Washington Post publishing dynasty, but in reality, the party was for him—he was, after all, at the height of his fame thanks to the immense success of his book “In Cold Blood.” The party brought brought together the worlds of high society, media, politics, Hollywood, and the arts, with a 540-person guest list that included Mia Farrow and Frank Sinatra, Ben Bradlee, Cecil Beaton, Andy Warhol, Lauren Bacall, Gordon Parks, Gloria Steinem, Lady Bird Johnson, the Kennedys, Agnellis, Vanderbilts, and Astors. "As spectacular a group as has ever been assembled for a private party in New York," according to the New York Times.

This story made me wonder: no one today throws lavish ballroom events (except for weddings/religious rites). No one throws cocktail parties. Then, I thought of these questions for discussion:

Who would you invite to a Korean Black and White Ball? And who would be the Host?

Surely the host is Suga and the ball is Suchwita. It's just on hold for a bit 😉

OMG it's so hard to be a K-pop idol! Now you even have to get drunk on TV and of course still radiate charming perfect innocence! But I suppose it's allowed to only have one or two drinks and then drink water and practice your best "drunk" look for the remaining bottles.

I love his interviews because they offer lovely insights both into the BTS members, his relationships with them, and with others, and into his personality. I've revisited them several times (something I rarely do with anything else). I'm hoping he managed to do some more before he left for the military.

The interviews are personal without being intrusive. There are a lot of celebrity interview shows but this is refreshing. I mean editing can only get you this far. 😅

Yes. You can see how he establishes rapport with his guest and they share their experiences and how they felt. Of course, he has an advantage with the members because he knows them so well, but you can feel the subtle differences in his relationship with each of them. I totally loved his second interview with Jungkook. (Won't say too much). It has been nice to see his many close friends with whom he shares a musical relationship. You can see how clearly music and composing is the very ground of his being. I also loved it when he met his doppelganger, Woozi. He even had his hair styled the same for their dance challenge. 🕺 🕺

1

^^ You're so right. His inherent musicality really shines through. It is rare to get this feeling with many others. 😅
I'm happy to be a fly on the wall to these interactions, as it doesn't even seem like interviews. 😊 Although I'm sure a lot of bts work must be involved.

There was an article about the Black and White Ball in the New York Times, with some great photos:
https://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2016/11/21/fashion/truman-capotes-black-and-white-ball.html?unlocked_article_code=1.V00.9yqt.eJ8_SQ4s_rJ8&smid=url-share

Truman Capote was a sui generis cultural phenomenon--a brilliant writer whose literary accomplishments were overshadowed by his peculiar persona and public notoriety.

I highly recommend his two best-known works, In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany's, which are so different from each other that it's hard to believe they were written by the same person. I can also recommend two really good biopics centered around the creation of In Cold Blood: Capote and Infamous.

I am always fascinated by people who were friends as children or did seemly minor things as a child then grew up to famous. I often think about the girl who refused to ‘slum it’ by sharing a room with Michelle Obama at university. I wonder what she is doing now as she could have been life long friends with a formidable woman who also became a president’s wife.

What do you suppose is up with that, Beanatariat?

AH. I guess I caught a bug, not an intentional feature 😁.

Now people might think I went crazy reading my OP. 'Cause they weren't thinking that before, you see.

3

@attiton No, people will think you caught a bug :-)

2

But I want to be thought of as crazy, clearly. May I be crazy, Claire? PLEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAZE?? 🤪

2

You must have posted that OP intentionally then, @attiton? 🤣 (just kidding!! But in any case, Mother Bean @Reply1988 will be my witness 😂)

No, Seon-ha wans’t the only one. I saw it the whole day today too, and I even clicked on that but then didn’t follow the prompt, not because I thought it was a glitch, but because I visit DB everyday so I didn’t think I needed a newsletter too.

5

I know!! Not to sub-tweet our overlords, but if there's one thing that the committed Beanatariat does NOT need, it's an additional email telling us about the things that we've already been checking in on a few times a day, every day...for weeks, months and years (I'm looking at you @bbstl and @midnight 😄).

2

Please DB overlords, we do NOT need an additional email telling us about the things that we've already been checking in on a few times a day, every day...for weeks, months and years. What we do need is functional notifications! I didn't get a notification for @attiton tagging me here!

Seon-ha, I don't know what your observation says about me! 😆 I swear when I'm writing down my job responsibilities and house chores I definitely don't see as much free time as my time on DB seems to imply!

4

@midnight Well, see my comments below about/to @bbstl. You, too, have my highest respect and regard! You've also been here for 15 years, I think you said the other day on WWW?? Kudos to you and your persistence...and patience.

2

Well, 14 years, to be exact😅 I rounded it up a bit😅

But yes, I can even tell you the exact date I first stumbled upon DB. It was when the first post was a picture of Siwon's hands with @Javebeans words "Jazz hands!" under it, which a quick search reveals as April 8, 2010.

I don't really think I deserve any respect and regards though! 😅 Kdramas are my hobby, and I have nobody irl to talk about them to. So, in fact I should be thanking Beanies for being there for me for 14 years! 🥰

7

@midnight Is this tag working for you?

I’m really curious about the early days of DB, and would very much appreciate it if you would give us some info. When I went to the old posts, like very old, I only saw unregistered accounts and assumed DB didn’t have the registration function then. When did you guys start to be able to log in and comment under a consistent username?

And in DB’s starter kit, they say something along the line of “don’t bother creating multiple accounts and upvoting yourself, because from our end we know and it looks funny”. Do they really know?

3

Yes, I got the tag this time.

The site was a blog for many years. So the unregistered accounts you see now were just normal blog readers commenting with online usernames. If I remember correctly the changed servers once or twice too, before changing into a whole new site format.

I went through my comments because I knew I didn't commen a lot back then and found the date for you:

https://www.dramabeans.com/2017/04/thanks-for-your-patience-were-working-out-the-kinks/

3

Oh, I forgotvto answer your second question.

I really don't know 😅. Maybe they see the IPs? I don't know anything about these things! 😅

4

@midnight awesome, thank you so much!! I've just quickly gone through the post in the link you sent and seen familiar names, a lot are still active on DB. What amazed me the most is the fact that you guys and DB have been companions for such a long time. At the peak of other social networks, such as facebook, were you ever swayed and occupied by them that you paid less attention to DB? I know such question sounds silly because different platforms do not negate but complement one another, especially when I guess DB 10 years ago didn't have the functions it has today. But I'm still asking, because some beanies said DB is the only social network they join.

Before I started to frequent DB, I used to read thefangirlverdict blog. I guess interactions on DB in its early days was similar to how it's working on blogs like thefangirlverdict.

4

Yes, similar to thefangirlverdict blog, with no other functions except reading the posts and commenting.

Answering for myself, I didn't use DB as social media, (I wasn't into Facebook or other on-line socializing at all either), I only wanted a place to read about kdramas, and DB and one or two other blogs were the best.

Still, it was possible to use DB for socializing, if you wanted kdrama-loving online friends. There were lots of conversations on the open threads.

6

@claire2009 @midnight

They're probably not paying that much attention to our individual IP addresses (although they can certainly see them if they want).

It's more that the interface to this particular content management system actually tracks who's commenting, and they can of course see the signs of ghost accounts all over the actual account creation process. People signing up, say, with names like "Shmargaret Shmason" and with burner email addresses like "[email protected]"

And, obviously, they're tracking who comments on which posts, as that's how the "Beanie Levels" work. Though, as yet a 100th reminder, the levels don't take "Likes" into account (said so that those who get caught up in such things might not have to get so caught up).

3

I think they have changed it back to the original image for all because maybe Seon-ha wasnt the only one with a glitch. I saw the new symbol clicked on it and the usual subscription details were there. I didn't click on any then but just tried it now and it was operational. My annual subscription is still active.

3

Oh thank you, the feeling is mutual! I thought maybe you were teasing us for our Jae Hee-or-Hyun Bin posts 😁 Or that you had a way of knowing that I probably haven’t logged off DB for years!

5

Well...while I won't cop to "teasing," I will allow that I was indeed tacitly referring to the fact that when I go back into the deep, dark recesses of Dramabeans of yore to check up on some old "Drama Chat" or on the reception of an older drama...I do often see you there, offering the same sage and cogent commentary as always!

What I don't get is how you can stand all these newbie--like me--showing up, knowing nothing, and spraying their uninformed opinions about everything all over the place!! You and your veteran comrades-in-arms have the patience of saints.

3

@attiton in answer to your last comment, I keep hearing Elizabeth Bennet’s response to Darcy about her feelings toward him: in fact, they are quite the opposite! Meaning, I am so grateful to new Beanies and full of love for what you’re all doing for Dramabeans! I think of the “latest” new Beanies as the GiF Queens and marvel at your dedication to learning new skills/figuring out the wonky stuff in order to greatly increase what the site offers. Your energy and generosity in sharing your talents are a gift to everyone here and I thank you again and again 😘

stock market - Natural Gas is trash. gold silver still good.

As for stocks - same gamble by many - making many rich, many poor. This is gambling - options and that too daily expiry are gamble.

for example - swing or positional trade - 1.8$ aka 18k $
on monday made high of 2.20 - many milked it at 2.05
1 hour = 2000$ what else u want. my view with 3.20.
tuesday it made high of 2.06
wednesday it was 1.75
thusrday from 1.21 to 1.62 - many milked 3k+
friday - made high of 2.25 n i exited at 2.20 after getting bored.

whole week wasted for mere 2.2k while many whole scalped made 12k+
monday it was 3.80 - Quarter results
tuesday 5.8
wednesday - 9.2 to 4.5

i know some who had 4-5 in mind and made 100k+ as they had more than 1 lot.

this is what you call analysis. technical - fundamental - news based action. it takes time - it tests ur patience but rewards are very good.
2 weeks 10k+ is huge whether u believe or not - it alone puts so in like worlds top 10% earners.

Some time weeks ago I made a comment that while I have big issues with Im Soo-hyang, her weak acting and mannerisms fits the bill of a weekender drama. And truly, when you look at the writing and direction of weekenders, and you compare it with her latest stint in Triple Kokkdu and Woo-ri the Virgin, you'll see it loud and clear - they both fit themselves.

I'm going to shift the focus to the actress currently on the slaughter - Shin Se-kyung. Not just here, even on other blogs( I blame Tell Me That You Love Me for making me read through bulk of the comments on MyDramalist), eyes are being raised about her acting. And more than 1 person opines that she is weak beside Jo Jung-seok. It is clear as day that Jo Jung-seok acts way better in Captivating the King. Infact, while Hospital Playlist was the drama that introduced him to me, Sejak is the drama that has me giving him the respects for his acting chops. And Shin Se-kyung has a lot to do if she's to attain that level of acting.

However, I believe that while she has work to do and is a weak actor beside Jo Jung-seok, I won't say weak like a weak thread in the drama that is ruining it. Im Soo-hyang ruined KKKoddu with her acting. But Shin Se-kyung? She is not a weak thread here at all. Jo Jung-seok sure does elevate the script better than she does but to presume her acting is weak here is overreaching. Mong-woo/Hee-soo is the kind of character that brings out the shine in Shin Se-kyung's acting strengths and capabilities. There will always be actresses that are more excellent than she is that could have acted as FL. But here is the point I'm making, in the world of Sejak, while Shin Se-kyung is not an excellent actress all round, she is excellent for her character here, and can even compete favorably with or even beyond than the actresses you think could have been casted in the role of Hee-soo. Look at the history of characters she has played in previous projects - Run On for example - and it'll show that Hee-soo is a character made for her and that she can play it as perfect as an expressive actress would.

I'm only watching the scenes in CtK with all the sexual tension, so I really can't say a whole lot, but what I do feel qualified to say is that SSK is playing more-or-less the same level of emotionality as she did in (one of my favorite dramas of all time) Run On.

And I mean this in all of its positive and negative ways, because I liked Run On despite the FL and SSK's portrayal. For me, she (the character) was a visibly emotionless person who scolded the ML for being emotionless (gah, I'm angry just thinking back on it). Her only display of clear emotion was anger, and came in at a moment where she shouted "Fuck You" (a number of times) at an English-speaking co-worker.

I am seeing the same emotionlessness here in the few scenes of CtK that I am watching...but it's up to the fans of the show to decide if that actually matches what that character needs to be doing. Is she all bottled up for a reason? Or is the character meant to be expressive and SSK just isn't doing it??? From what I've seen, this character is so bottled up with not being able to say who she is or what she's doing or how she's feeling...I don't even know how she forms words. But, again, I've only seen scenes where they happen to find themselves undressing one another in a bedroom or sexually-fraught interactions over a badeuk board.

PS: As for Im Soo-hang...good news, as I bet you've seen, she's starring in the next KBS WEEKENDER (Beauty and the Devoted). We shall see if she really fits the bill!

I've never seen Im Soo-hyang in any weekender. Infact I'll see a few episodes of this new weekenders to I can verify my conclusions about Im Soo-hyang 's acting.
But with the weekenders I've seen of recent and her whacky acting in Kokkdu and Woo-ri, I will say that she fits the bill.

@attiton it would take even more than your extraordinary gif making skills to convince me you are right about Run-on. Siwan WAS flat and emotionless, and he was totally miscast as a track athlete. In fact I've never seen more awkward running by a supposed athlete in any movie or drama. It makes me laugh just to think of it. Whereas Shin Se-kyung was well cast as a reflective movie buff and translator. She was a lot more charismatic than Siwan in Run-on. Of course, both of them were outshone by the secondary couple played by Kang Tae-oh and Choi Soo-young, but Run-on is not the drama to throw shade on Shin Se-kyung, unless you preface it by saying "Siwan is a terrible runner."

To show you what a good Beanie Friend™ I am, I am more than happy to preface any future comments that I make, any comments AT ALL, with the phrase, "Im Si-wan is a terrible runner."

Shall I? That one commenter who often complains that we mispell his name can even come and tell me that again. I'm also ready for people to come and tell me that I just misspelled 'mispell!'

It still doesn't make the FL in Run On a good or interesting character, tho.

Let's fight with heated, rhetorically unstructured language.

Going out on a limb here to say I like her. I do agree with your post. There are some actors that have a certain range of acting that fits certain characters and play to their strengths but are out of water on other roles.

I think there are many actors who are type cast for certain roles. SSK is very popular which opens the door for casting her in many projects, but producers or her agency narrow her potential range to a certain spectrum. I don't recall her being in a show that required a challenging range of acting. Before The Glory, Song Hye-kyo had a similar criticism because she did not take completely different roles to create different acting skill sets.

5

Required fields are marked *

I'm probably biased, SSK imo is very one tone in whatever I've seen her in. So when I started watching this show, I had no expectations but surprisingly I was liking her. However, I feel that is because JJS had yet not brought his A game ro the show in those episodes. When he did, in scenes especially with her, she looked very bland in comparison. Now I think there are some deliberate choices by the director here. But I don't understand them unless he wants JJS to outshine everyone in the show. Honestly I feel none of the other characters are great actors either except maybe Court Lady Dong and the previous king was great. Everyone else is written as a very one tone character with similar acting in most scenes. I think a more expressive FL would have been better for the show but it is what it is.

You're not biased at all. Shin Se-kyung is one note. It took me watching Arthdal Chronicles : Sword of Aramun to notice that she is one note.

I vividly remember a particular episode and scene where I expected a flex of emotions and she just maintained her face, unmoving. It was like she was mentally steeling herself for the confrontation that ensued and forgot she was to show a react differently at that point.

I definitely agree with you on her one note acting.

Jo Jung-seok hasn't brought his A-game here...🧐🧐🤯🤯 I'm feeling him more here than I did in Hospital Playlist and you're saying I've not seen it all. This is surely going to be a blast cause you've wetted my appetite up another notch.

I meant that SSK looked serviceable when JJS was being very subtle in the first 2 episodes. Ep 3 onwards, he was impeccable and that's when she paled in comparison. I have seen JJS in many shows but I think he is the best here, showing a ramge of expressions within a single scene.

5

Required fields are marked *

I have watched some BTS and I have come to the conclussion that the JJS is as dominant backstage as is onscreen. I don't think that SSK can or is not in her character to say something. I like her, she is adorable, she may not be very versatile but her acting does not bother me.

4

Required fields are marked *

My issue with SSK is she's not bad but she's not good neither. I'm seeing the same character in every sageuk she did, the same expression and the same ton. I don't think she has screen presence neither. She's pretty but it's all.

In Rookie Historian, it didn't bother me because CEW was worst, so she was quite good. But with JJS? It's very frustrating for me to get an actor who can show so many different emotion with his eyes and face with her who has the one expression...

Like I mentioned elsewhere, I haven't watched many of Shin Se Kyung's project, but she was good in "Tree with deep roots". Her acting did not look out of place alongside dynamos like Han Suk Kyu and Jang Hyuk. Same way, I liked her in "Run On" . I think her lackadaisical performance may have something to do with the "emotionally suppressed" characters she is portraying than with her skills. Maybe someone who has chanced upon a drama where she is required to be expressive, but appears repressive can shed more light.

Also, I dropped "Captivating The King" after Ep.1, but my main complaint at that time was JJS's acting. His portrayal was dull and I simply attributed it to be what the script required, so when I saw praises for his acting in the past week or two, I was correct in my assumptions.

You point to something crucial about Mong-woo - "emotionally suppressed".

That's why I find her one note acting and stilled expression fitting here. I know for sure I'll feel differently about it in a different production.

I've seen four Shin Se-Kyung dramas: Tree with Deep Roots, The Roots of the Throne, Rookie Historian Goo Hye-Ryung and Run On. I neither loved nor hated her in any of them. I'd describe her as "bland," especially when she was performing opposite some really strong actors in TWDR and TROTT.

(2) My interested article of the week was not related to K-Pop but about one of the greatest singers of Filipino pop music. Sarah Geronimo's insane performance of Teddy Swims hit Lose Control (which now currently a US No. 2 hit) reminded people how she became legendary singer. And, of course, she was now 35 years old, so I hope her international career (outside Philippines) will be successful soon just like in her own country.

Some fun spreadsheet updates from your self-proclaimed Dramabeans archivist. :)

I’ve got a fair few updates to give, so I’m going to split it up so the comments section can stay a bit clearer.

1. Bean Count Analysis:If you haven't already seen it, @claire2009 created a lovely tally of our 2023 Bean Count. Out of curiosity, I then used these tallies (and some more information furnished from all of you) to conduct some additional analysis, which can be found on this sheet.

Every time we do the Beanie poll, I find myself wondering how skewed our data is based on the dramas that more people have watched. Like, cool, this drama earned 23 beans. But how many people watched the drama and then chose to give it beans? I’m far more impressed by a drama that had 12 Beanies watch the show and earned 23 beans than a show that had 39 people watch it and earned 23 beans. (Spoiler alert: That data comes from My Lovely Liar and My Lovely Boxer -- same amount of beans earned, but My Lovely Boxer was watched by only a third of the number of Beanies as My Lovely Liar!) So I went back and also tallied the dramas that Beanies watched but didn’t give a Bean to. This allowed me to do some fun analysis that identified drama traits beyond just total beans -- creating categories like Hidden Gems, Most Disliked, Most Disappointing, Most Polarizing, etc.

I’ll list the top 5 of each category below, but if you’re interested in any more fun patterns, definitely look at the sheet itself! I’ll also include some more patterns and insights that I found from the analysis in the comment after this post.

Top Dramas in each Category: (For more details on how the categories are measured, see the “4. Analytics (Explanations)” tab on the sheet. These top 5s could change a tad (see disclaimer below), but I’m guessing they’ll stay fairly consistent.)

Most Popular dramas: Dramas that were frequently watched and enjoyed
1. Twinkling Watermelon
2. Moving (tie)
2. Perfect Marriage Revenge (tie)
4. Call it Love
5. Matchmakers (tie)
5. Castaway Diva (tie)

Most Loved dramas: Dramas that were most beloved by the people who watched them
1. Twinkling Watermelon (tie)
1. The Matchmakers (tie)
3. Call it Love
4. Moving

4. The Matchmakers
5. The Killing Vote

Most Polarizing dramas: Dramas with extreme opinions -- many viewers don't like it, others love it

Follow-up on Bean Count

First, a couple disclaimers: This data is not perfect. Since it’s attempting to analyze how often a drama was given in relation to the number of times a Beanie watched it, that means that main analysis excludes the 25% of Beanies who didn’t list their completed dramas along with their beaned dramas. I replied to these Beanies’ posts to ask for lists, so this number may decrease over time, but it remains a limitation. Additionally, due to the nature of the Bean Count, this data can only account for watches that were completed. This means dramas that were frequently dropped (e.g., Kokdu or The Real Has Come) aren’t as highly represented in the analytics -- even in Most Disliked.

That said, in @attiton’s words, there is a lot of fun narrativizing that can happen with this data! I’ll start the conversation here, but I’d love to hear other people’s interpretations. :)

Some other fun patterns:

1. When you see dramas with higher average beans than median beans (e.g., Missing: The Other Side, Perfect Marriage Revenge, My Demon), that generally means a person or two dumped a disproportionately large number of beans onto one drama (these are the “wealthy friends” dramas). Dramas with higher median beans than average beans (e.g., Trolley, Taxi Driver 2) are dramas in which people generally gave fewer beans to the drama, but it had a disproportionately high number of people giving beans (think of these as the “grassroots movement” dramas -- these aren’t super common). Finally, dramas with around the same average and median beans are consistent dramas -- where those who gave beans tended to give about the same number of beans. Personally, I find dramas with high and consistent average/median beans the most impressive (The Matchmakers, Twinkling Watermelon, Call it Love), since those are dramas that were consistently given lots of beans by lots of people without being skewed by a couple high rollers.

2. Twinkling Watermelon was our most successful drama, taking 1st in both the most popular and most loved categories. Nearly 95% of people who watched the drama gave it at least one bean.

3. The Matchmakers also had an impressive showing, earning over four beans for every single watch. I wonder how this was impacted by the fact that it was still releasing at the time? Was it benefitted by the anticipation and momentum? How would it rank now?

4. Despite not being technically listed as an eligible drama (according to the official Dramabeans list), My Demon had a pretty decent showing. I also wonder what this drama would have received had it been completed and listed as an eligible drama.

5. Crash Course in Romance and See You in my 19th Life were our most watched dramas, with over 60% of polled Beanies having completed them. They were also our two most...

Your post got cut.

I would like to appreciate all those who were involved in this data analysis because the findings are impressive. This gives a better insight into beanies' consensus on dramas and will be helpful for those looking for recommendations. It would be cool if DB staff can expand on this data and put a "Beanies' Choice of Drama" post similar to "Editors' Pick".

Ah, darn. Clearly I'm still in my n00b era for knowing how to comment most successfully on DB.😅 Luckily, both posts still included the most important information.

Here are a few categories that got cut off, in case future readers want them:

From the original post:
Most Polarizing dramas: Dramas with extreme opinions -- many viewers don't like it, others love it
1. The Interest of Love
2. The Good Bad Mother
3. Trolley
4. Taxi Driver 2
5. Alchemy of Souls 2 (tie)
5. Castaway Diva (tie)

Biggest Bummer Dramas: Dramas that lots of people completed but many were disappointed by
1. See You in My 19th Life
2. The Lovely Liar
3. The Heavenly Idol
4. Crash Course in Romance (tie)
4. Strangers Again (tie)

Most Disliked dramas: Dramas that were most actively disliked/spurned
1. The Heavenly Idol
2. Strangers Again
3. Bora! Deborah
4. Oh! Young-shim
4. The Fabulous

From the reply post:

5. Crash Course in Romance and See You in my 19th Life were our most watched dramas, with over 60% of polled Beanies having completed them. They were also our two most spurned dramas (i.e., watched without being given a bean), closely followed by My Lovely Liar.

Some of my own personal reactions to this analysis:

While I wasn’t in love with See You in My 19th Life, I was surprised at how poorly it did in the analytics. I found it to be a fairly inoffensive drama. In a very close call, I decided to give it its bean back, but I was apparently in the far minority. In the recaps, though, it didn’t feel like it was that hated by watchers? I wonder if it’s one of those dramas that just didn’t quite earn its bean back, but wasn’t hate-watched as some others were.

I had somehow slept on The Matchmakers and hadn’t even heard of it before starting this analysis. Don’t worry; I’m starting it now. :)

Based on the original Bean Count (before I found Healer’s tally and did my own analysis), I saw how many beans Perfect Marriage Revenge earned and quickly watched it, thinking I’d missed out on something huge. I wasn’t a huge fan. I feel slightly validated now, seeing that it was the #2 most popular drama but only the #6 most loved one. 😂

I don't remember who but there was one beanie that gave all their 16 beans to Perfect Marriage Revenge!!

4

I was one of the few (or the only one?) beanies who watched Perfect Marriage Revenge and didn't like it.
The success of that drama will always be a mystery to me XD

I also watched My Lovely Boxer and Call it love and even though I liked them, I didn't give any beans to them. (I only got eighteen beans in 2023, because I mainly watch older shows).

4

@isagc I’m team “I didn’t really like PMR” too.

4

I liked Perfect Marriage Revenge for what it was, a makjang. It was a good one. But for me makjangs are not good dramas in general, when the writer inserts every tropes in one story is not good writing and the overacting of the villains is comical.

The Matchmakers was a a little discreet little gem but the few Beanies who watched it were very loud about it, me included 😅

4

While I quite enjoyed Perfect Marriage Revenge, a lot of the commentary on it described it as a kind of gleeful out of control makjang. But when I tuned in, I didn't find it nearly as crazy as I thought it would be. Of the genre, I much preferred Graceful Family (yes despite *that* plotline).

Although Graceful Family buried their main romance plotline and I'm still not quite sure why.

3

A number of DB commenters continued their fixation on the real life age difference between the leads and Haengseon’s clothes in “Crash Course in Romance” during its run. It was appalling to see that kind of commentary because it was misogynistic whether or not the commenters were aware of it. I wouldn’t be surprised at if this aspect contributed to the negative evaluations.

0

I totally agree about this being helpful for recommendations -- I've already used it to propel me into a few new dramas. :)

That would be really cool if DB staff picked up this data and ran with it!

Thanks so much for doing this! It takes a lot of time, work, and dedication to provide such a deep-dive analysis.

One other factor to consider is WHO actually responded to the poll. I would expect it to be the more hardcore Beanies—the ones who had the time and interest in calculating their bean count and then weighing in. I'm not exactly sure how it might affect the results, though.

I had a lot of “did not finish” last year; I wonder if there would be a way to factor that in somehow because I feel like it kind of ties to popularity (in that people have watched at least some) but also feels a bit like an anti bean if you didn’t care enough to finish….

But then there’s a range of DNF - like I feel it’s different if you watch only one or two episodes than if you watch all but the last one or two episodes…

Anyway I’m just thinking out loud 😄 not really sure where I’m going with that! Thanks for the analysis, it was interesting!

I was thinking the same! On one hand, I'd love to somehow get a list of all the dramas that we dropped because that would yield some interesting data, but we would definitely have to put some parameters on it... In my own categorizing for myself, I don't consider a drama "dropped" unless I get at least a quarter of the way through the drama. Otherwise, it's categorized as "attempted" on my tracking sheet.

I don't know if there's a great way to get standardized data on all of this, but it sure would be interesting!

7

Required fields are marked *

Maybe I need to start tracking my dramas again; I used to do it more but I find that my ratings are wildly inconsistent (eg dramas I watched early on are much more likely to be highly rated; dramas that were really good but the ending was just okay end up rated lower than dramas that were just okay all the way through) and it irritates me 😅.

I also wouldn’t consider a drama dropped unless I’d watched a decent chunk of it; and maybe if I’d watched all but a couple of episodes I would consider it indefinitely on hold rather than given up forever … so you’d definitely need well defined parameters.

5

@beffels I think we need to have a score for the ending specifically and how it has affected our overall satisfaction, something like that.

3

I prefer to say I have dramas "on hold", sometimes that happens in the first episode, sometimes it happens in the fourth or sixth (if I pass that point I usually watch the show up to the end).
But I know that I will probably never come back to some of those dramas 😅

2

I didn’t watch any of the 2022 ‘biggies’ but did watch 2 and beaned 2 of the Hidden Gems: MY LOVELY BOXER and THE KILLING VOTE.
To clarify, the Hidden Gem MISSING is Season 2 correct?
I loved the original MISING (and truly hidden gem) in 2020 but for some reason I didn’t watch season 2 and I think it was unavailable on a legal stream for me.

MyDramaList is acting up for me right now. I can’t access the comments section or check where Season 2 was available.

And some other additional updates about spreadsheets and archiving projects!

2. Shared Google Folder of Beanie Resources: There are some pretty spectacular Beanies here on Dramabeans that have created resources to help other Beanies enjoy k dramas and dramabeans even more. These include tallies of favorite dramas, Dramabeans how-to guides, k drama tracking sheets, etc. While these sorts of resources have existed forever, they frequently get buried on people’s fan walls or in obscure posts. In order to make these resources accessible to everyone, I’ve created a shared Beanies Resources Google folder, and I’m currently trying to archive all of these resources into that one folder. By doing this, I hope Beanies both old and new can have readier access to all of your guys’ Dramabeans knowledge. I’m (very slowly) trying to go through old fan posts to find some of these resources, but if you are aware of any resources that you want more Beanies to have access to, please let me know! The folder is currently rather sparse, but I’ll keep adding to it as more resources are found and made!

3. The Spreadsheet Project: Finally, we’re recruiting! @darwi, @claire2009, and I are looking for other data-minded Beanies to help in future spreadsheet endeavors! Our current project is to clean up the Genre category from my Dramabeans Top 10 spreadsheet, since it’s a bit of a mess (as is described in the “BONUS: Genre” tab at the bottom of the page). There may be other upcoming projects that we might also undertake. If this is something you’re interested in being involved with, please reply here and let me know! We’re in incredibly early days, and this may be slow moving due to some crazy schedules, but we’d love to know which other Beanies may be interested in participating. :)

Cera's correct about the link access. I believe Beanies can also create a shortcut to the folder in their own Google Drive if they'd like.

Outside of that, I'm not aware of any more permanent place to put it. Maybe DB staff would allow us to put the folder on the Resources page? To be honest, though, I've been around the site for 6 years, and I've only been to that page 2-3 times ever, so I don't know if that increases the access that much.

I'd be happy to hear any suggestions for more permanent places to put the link. :)

That is why it is bounden on us to bookmark this link and share it as-and-when just like we share tutorials by Claire and Seon-ha and Beanie Glossary by Sicarius.

1

I agree and was wondering if the link could be flagged once a month/quarter (whatever time frame felt just enough to catch newbies or beanies who missed the original posting) on the Open thread.

1

@Reply1988 I would say it is better to be discreet and share as and when required rather than just dump it on the heads of any new / old Bean joining in as mandatory reading. 😅

1

@seeker good plan to avoid too much of a good thing!

1

@Reply1988 After all iformation dump can be overwhelming in the best of circumstances. We want our Beans to be empowered with such awesome resources and not just overwhelmed. 😊😁

2

@seeker I was picturing one sentence with the link but I totally agree the busyness of the thread can mean even that can add to the overwhelm if it was repeatedly being shared. We are lucky as some beanies ask for help when they are confused so the silent lurkers can also benefit from the answers provided.

THIS WEEK'S LUNAR NEW YEAR RECAP FROM 9TAILED VIXEN:

1. Lunar New Year Shenanigans

It's been a fairly quiet 1st week of the Lunar New Year except that this weekend is going to be a doozy - a Lunar New Year lunch with work colleagues tomorrow followed by a Lunar New Year dinner with cousin, then a Lunar New Year lunch with an aunt on Sunday.

So today was spent packing individual Lunar New Year goodie bags and baking MORE Lunar New Year treats to add to said goodie bags.

2. I've been in a Mood this week when it comes to music:

Specifically - lyrics that reflect what's going on inside my brain:

First I got hit in the feels by THIS IS ME

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjxugyZCfuw

Then I got hit even MORE in the feels by DEFYING GRAVITY

Then I got triple whammied by MAGIC SHOP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTRGOBT6p80

(c) This week in Korean Women's News:

(i) South Koreans blame feminism for demographic collapse

South Korea has the worst fertility rate in the world. Some link the country’s demographic collapse to the emergence of feminism, citing that it instils bitterness into the hearts of women, worsens gender relations and discourages young women from having children.

In public discourse, feminism and women’s rights advocacy are often associated with misandry and a hidden leftist or even pro-North Korean agenda of female supremacy. Given that there is little evidence that feminism is the source of South Korea’s demographic predicament, publicly focusing on this perceived issue may well divert South Korean policymakers from addressing the actual structural issues harming natality.

https://eastasiaforum.org/2024/02/16/south-koreans-blame-feminism-for-demographic-collapse/

Nothing new here - instead of addressing the core cultural and social issues (to put it mildly) that has led to the the 4B movement where women are taking the Lysistra route, people are blaming feminism.

(ii) From sexual liberation to fashionable heels, new research shows how women are changing North Korea

North Korea’s women, underestimated and operating in the shadows, have become increasingly adept at circumventing official monitoring and controls to create the space to drive significant economic and social change.

Ah, yes, it must be women's fault that they don't just want to be baby producing machines. Especially annoying given that the developing countries where birthrates are closest to replacement level are also those with the most gender equity and support for mothers (the other thing that helps is having relatively liberal immigration laws - weird how allowing more young people of working age into your country can really boost the number of, checks notes, "young, productive workers").

I just dropped My Strange Hero, yet another drama depicting school bullying. Watching these shows, I'm repeatedly struck by how often students are left unsupervised in their classrooms—often for long periods of time—allowing the more vulnerable students to be humiliated and even assaulted by the school bullies.

Does anyone know whether this is an accurate depiction of school life in South Korea? In the U.S. (at least in the state where I live), it's actually illegal to leave minors unattended. If a teacher needs to leave the room for any reason, they need to find another adult to take their place while they're absent.

6

Required fields are marked *

I have made the same observation for school-based Chinese, Japanese and Korean dramas/films. Putting a same-age student in charge as a class monitor/leader is cruel. Many adults can't handle a room full of hormones which defines every grade past 6th. Not only is this practice unprofessional, its downright lazy. After watching Koreada's latest film "Monster" leaving groups of students in room unsupervised seems to also be an incubator for growing bullies, torturers and gangs.
Sure, bullies will find a way to pick on vulnerable kids anywhere, but giving them free reign for hours in a school day is egregious.

6
reply

Required fields are marked *

My guesstimate is that it was true of 80's and 90's but I don't think it's true anymore in developed countries or countries with functional governments. Recently, for example, SK enacted the same laws as in the US to ensure no kids are left behind in buses after couple of them died from heatstroke.

As a side note, Koreans (and many other nationalities) routinely leave their kids home alone, so it appears there are no strict rules when it comes to leaving kids (at least the preteens and teens) unsupervised. This is why many parents who immigrated to the United States are bewildered by these strict rules and sometimes get in trouble. In my state, it's illegal to leave a kid home alone younger than 14. Of course, cramming 20 kids in one room and leaving them all alone even for 5 minutes is a recipe for disaster, so I'm also curious what are the rules/laws for school setting in Korea.

5
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Again, I'm not familiar with the culture, but as depicted in many Kdramas, bullies get away with it—the teachers and school administrators look the other way—because they come from rich, influential families. I think some other socioeconomic factors come into play in the U.S., including tensions between different ethnic groups.

5
reply

Required fields are marked *

As far as parents leaving their children unsupervised, things have changed a lot in the U.S. since I was a kid. Once we made it past the toddler stage, we were "free range" kids, left to roam around the neighborhood until it was time for dinner. If both parents left the house, my older siblings were put in charge.

It's interesting that later generations of parents would never dream of giving their children so much independence, even though incidences of kidnapping, stranger abuse, etc. are way down from when I was a kid. Parents who let their kids walk alone to school or the park have been arrested for "child neglect."

There's a long-running Japanese show called "Old Enough" that follows children as young as 2 who are sent out alone on errands such as getting something from the store or delivering a message to grandma. The kids have to remember the route, which may include crossing streets, and also their task. (There's always a crew nearby to keep them safe.) It's a culture that values and encourages children to be independent from an early age.

Required fields are marked *

I'm so glad there's starting to be some pushback against hypervigilant parenting that doesn't allow kids to gain independence or a sense of their own capabilities. Turns out when you don't let them do anything, they don't learn how to do anything.

I love "Old Enough" and have been an advocate for free range kids for many years. The success of such a paradigm depends entirely on a community that supports such activities. Even when there isn't a TV crew to keep kids safe there are many women shop keepers, clerks and grannies who know kids.
It really does take a village,

late today so not long

been a hell of a week. prepared for a valentines day workshop cutting very hard book cover cardboard and cut my hand, needed stitches but it is healing.
had a blood test it is mostly fine but I have D vitamin deficiency. hemoglobin is almost ideal since I work out a lot.
but my doctor said that if I dont get my sleep in check (nightmares) & regulate my nervous system I will get mental illness. my nightmares are literally violent, like someone stabbing me in the eye 18 times or cutting my hands off

so, I sympathise a lot with doctor slump

ok do I have any library jokes... a guy asked why can he not return a Tartu Central Library book to Tallinn Central Library bc if we are both Central then aren´t we the same library?

a woman told me to print out a Youtube video for her

my colleagues make fun of me bc of my Taemin Advice ringtone. "Why is Taemin calling you at 9am? Tell him you are working, cmon!"

a patron ended up working here and I have been seeing this girl just stare at me all year and I was like, whats her deal, then she shows up as our new coworker and im like, were you spying

ah!!! tomorrow is our Eurovision preliminary Eesti Laul. Two of the favorites are Ollie "My Friend" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBd_0xrQMZA and Puuluup & 5 Miinust. I support Puuluup cause those guys are my friends from ages ago, and they are really fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui_u0M7_hjs which would you prefer?

anyway I FINALLY LEVELED UP! Now, why did it have to be now - just when Park Hyung Shik moved in? Why?

Sorry to hear about your hand! I’m an art teacher so I can totally relate to hurting a hand while prepping materials. I have been in paint bottle hell the last few weeks filling smaller bottles with paint for students at their tables. The original ones I had were too small at the mouth and impossible to fill. I bought new ones that are much wider and today finally have filled them all. It felt like a very Sisyphean task.
Love the library jokes! My favorite library story from my library friend here in Boston was a parent who brought a portable potty for their child and wanted the child to just use it in the middle of the library.

yes, I studied to be an art teacher as well, but I don+t work at a school, just do some workshops and use the knowledge mixing it into events. I like to integrate art and art therapy where I can. but yes the time it takes, and then sometimes cleaning up, bc you can prob ask the students to clean up but if it is like seniors for me, I would be very impolite to ask them to clean with their bad knees etc

Sending you healing vibes for your hurt hand and sweet dreams for your sleep~~~ was it your dominant hand? I cut off a chunk of my right thumb while using a mandoline (how typical!) and it taught me how to wipe my behind with my left hand. It also took what seemed like forever to heal. So sending you extra patience during this trying time.

fortunately it was not dominant but im both handed anyway. I do some things better with right, some with left hand. like I cannot water plants with right hand, bc left hand wrist is stronger. but for most common things it is right hand and I hurt my left. the knife went 1,5cm deep but fortunately it doesnt seem to have cut any nerves. gotta be really careful with those " carpet knives".

There was one instant today when I saw I had 3 notifications, and after I clicked on one of them, the notifications showed 2 left. But only at that instant, after that everything went back to normal, i.e. even if you have 100 notifications, you click on that once and the number is gone. Any of you noticed that too?

DB overlords, can we please have that feature back? We promise to peacefully let go of our wish for a functional FOLLOW button and never talk about it again.

Y what you describe is what I have always experienced. I only see the number before I click on the notification bell once clicked on I access them from the drop down list no new notifications. So I assume the only reason you saw the number two after clicking was because two new notifications came in while you were following the link to the first of the original three.

Yes it is a great request because it would avoid us having to remember how many we had when there is a batch in one go and need to know how far down the list you need scroll.

For me, the rest of the notifications disappear after I click on one since they changed the website, one year ago? Or something like that. Since I miss some replies 😅

I haven't been on DB for too long but when I first joined (2020?), it still worked the former way, i.e. the number of notifications decreased by 1 after each time we clicked on 1 notification. But then it changed to how it is now, like you said, and has been like that since. Today I thought it was back to how it had been before, but I must have mistaken it.

I always go back to the first page that I got the number on to click on the next notification. But I keep not getting notifications for tags which is a real bummer. I don't like missing interesting threads and conversations 🙁

Required fields are marked *

I have noticed there are a few things that go wrong with the notifications. The most frequent are they don’t alert you so you find out by chance that you have been mentioned or liked, or they take you to a random point on the page so you need to go on a reconnaissance mission to find the actual comment.

Both these glitches tend to be short lived but happen more frequently than we would like.

Required fields are marked *

Indeed these glitches were generally more frequent on weekends but now any random day we're facing this. Funnily I've found the tag works fine and sometimes if I refresh the page it actually takes me to the correct comment / reply but not always. So whenever I land on a random page / thread I try to first search for my name and new comments / replies under it or by date. While its fine when I actually have a notification then I can search but if I don't get a notification I worry that the Bean would think that I'm not responding and I don't want that. I wish it was possible to go back to all my comments/ replies to check. This may work somewhat on the threads in the main site but not the Fanwall.

Indeed, Im Soo-hyang along with Sung Hoon did break out starring in the 2011 weekender "New Tales of the Gisaeng ", which was very popular back then. Im Soo-hyang did well in it and because she was still young (20) and new in the business at that time and because she actually brought out some complexity of the character she played, many thought at that time she could probably be a good actress. So maybe you are right, she maybe do better in a weekend, let's see how she fare in the upcome weekender.

Your vote of confidence is heartening. I found her surprisingly good in My ID Is Gangnam Beauty but then perhaps not so surprising considering who she was with. 😅 Rest I struggle to remember any one of her dramas I found memorable. But I would like to try and weekender and be pleasantly surprised. 😊

I liked Im Soo Hyang in My ID is Gangnam Beauty and Graceful Family. Not so much in Kkokdu but I think its not entirely her fault. I have not seen New Tales of the Gisaeng since I have only recently looked into weekenders. I sure hope her weekender will also fare better.

I was sorely disappointed in Doctor Lawyer but perhaps that was more to do with the character than the actor. 😊 Also it is never easy to measure up to So Ji-sub or Shin Sung-rok.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

I have a few busy weekends without Dramabeans ahead of me, which is why I insist on posting something this week. There is a sleepover at a friend’s place next weekend. She lives close to the border, which makes it easier to attend a Victorian convention abroad on Saturday. I do not know what to expect as it is my first time, but I hear a street will be turned Victorian and you can walk around and shop in Victorian cosplay. It will be a last-minute newsboy costume for me, but I do hope to go bigger in the future.🎩🙏🏻

I am a bit worried since it is something new, and because the week before and after the agenda brims with things and leaves little time for recovery. Ah, the woes of a person on the spectrum!😉

Life is always going to test your best laid plans approach to your essential down time. Hopefully you have been advised to have a range of strategies to cover the ideal and not so ideal days so no matter what situation you find yourself in you have a go to plan.

Hope you have a great time at the event and get inspiration for future outfits. Have fun with your friends as these times are a blessing.

By the time you get back new dramas will be out so you will have plenty to keep you occupied during the quieter weeks. Looking forward to hearing your news on your return.

Mother Bean is so right. Somehow whenever I feel a little low or there is a special day in the family I am swamped with work. 😅 I don't know if it's some random Murphy's law or some such. I try to cope by taking a deep breath and finishing whatever portion of the sudden influx of work that is immediately required and then delegating or postponing whatever is possible. I find it extremely challenging but I know that I have to prioritize my life and family as well.

I hope you have the best of times and make lots of happy memories and take lots of cool photographs.

Hi guys, just came across this really interesting news video from Miss K-Drama YouTube channel : K-Drama Actors CALL OUT Netflix for Exploiting the Korean Acting Industry! — posted apparently only yesterday, Feb 16, 2024.

Thank you for posting this. So many interesting issues were raised and some were even sourced. I just wish they had left out the cheesy filler scenes.
Netflix’ behaviour is appalling but predictable. The issues of extraordinarily low rates of payment for the Korean supporting actors and the fact that Netflix is forcing Korean actors to sign contracts in English and under pressure should be made illegal in S/Korea. They are using the S/Korean Drama industry’s infrastructure for their own enrichment and this has to be countered in a number of ways including strong union membership and regulation.

Something I've long bean curious about. How do the Beanie levels work? I was quite pleased be promoted to Noble Idiot, but less happy about becoming a Eunuch in Drag, simply because I find them silly and irritating, and don't want to be associated with them, let alone be one! How long must I languish in drag before escaping the palace?

Sicarius is our highest rank Beanie who is not a DB staff member. She is a wonderful person and has kindly compiled a Beanie Level Glossary and an Inappropriate Words list. Both documents are available in the folder named How to Dramabeans in the Google Drive link shared by Mother Bean. ^^

Sometimes while posting our comment gets held up due to an inappropriate word. 😅 This list by Sicarius will help you identify any such word which you can delete and post your comment.

Please can you help by posting the link for the beanie levels at least? If my posts randomly turn up later I will delete them.

Why do kdrama drivers who hit a pedestrian always just stay in the car? Most recent example is beginning of ep 7 of Doctor Slump, where Jeong-woo is chasing a masked guy on foot, who is hit by a car, goes up on the bonnet, smashes into the windscreen and is flung several metres. What kind of person doesn't get out of the car to check on things???

(I mean, I get that it might add confusion and distraction to the scene, as we're meant to focus on the main characters' reaction, but it completely shortcircuits the whole suspension of disbelief thing for me, and I find it much more distracting that the driver *doesn't* come out acting shocked/angry/scared or whatever...)

Same with cars/trucks barrelling down the road towards a wayward pedestrian wandering into the road. Sure, the cars have right of way, but even so, with plenty of time to stop, why do they just honk the horn and plow into someone rather than applying the brakes? (And then either sit there idling for ages without leaving the vehicle, or even just keep driving...)
