Making a second love story with Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won

New character teasers have been released for tvN’s upcoming Queen of Tears, showcasing our wedded leads Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day) and Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes) as they try to make sense of all their new ~feelings~ as love blooms again in their three-year marriage.

As a Lady and the Tramp match, it’s both a blessing and a curse for our commoner hero Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun), who begins his teaser with the TLDR version of his story: “My boss is my wife.” It’s an uncomfortable situation at work to say the least, and Hyun-woo is having a difficult time with wife Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won) as well as his chaebol in-laws.

In the shortest of shots, we then get a quick glimpse of our heroine’s family, which includes dad Jung Jin-young (LTNS), mom Na Young-hee (Queen of Divorce), younger brother Kwak Dong-yeon (Gaus Electronics), and grandpa Kim Gab-soo (Today’s Webtoon). You’d think they would have an entourage of cooks, but somehow Hyun-woo has taken the place of a traditional daughter-in-law and it’s sadly hilarious to see him crying in the kitchen, slaving over the feast preparations alone.

Despite Hyun-woo’s contentions, though, he can’t help but be dumbstruck by the pretty, pretty Hae-in and as time slows in the moment, he wonders, “Seeing my wife made my heart beat. I must have finally gone mad.” Hyun-woo then becomes a bundle of worries, fussing that Hae-in might catch cold and bandaging her scratched knee. When she suggests cuddling if the bed is too narrow to sleep apart, Hyun-woo turns around in shock to ask, “Is that, by chance, what you want?” With Hae-in remaining on his mind, the teaser then ends on Hyun-woo’s next fervent question, “Are you… going straight to sleep?”

Every story has more than one side, though, and we learn in Hae-in’s teaser that she has her own marriage concerns. Although she’s the fabulous picture of confidence wherever she goes, even Hae-in can’t completely shake off the persistent rumors that Hyun-woo only wanted to marry up for the Queen’s Group money. But instead of communicating what’s wrong, Hae-in only confuses Hyun-woo with a vague demand: “Be good to the people next to you.”

Hae-in then spends the better part of her day distracted by the pretty, pretty Hyun-woo. But she stubbornly denies reality and questions her health instead, wondering, “My husband looks handsome. Am I sick?” We then watch as Hae-in falls deeper in love, admitting, “I want to be… embraced by my husband and gaze into each other’s eyes. Just looking at his face is an enjoyment.” The teaser then closes as Hae-in cringes at the horror of her new self: “I wasn’t like this before, how can my heart flutter from looking at my husband?”

Meanwhile, the audience is gnashing their teeth at the pair of them because how can your heart not flutter if either of them are your partner? But I trust that we’re in good hands with the rom-com written by Park Ji-eun (Crash Landing on You) and co-directing by PD Jang Young-woo (Bulgasal – Immortal Souls) and PD Kim Hee-won (Soundtrack #2, Little Women).

tvN’s Queen of Tears premieres next month on March 9, airing in the weekend slot following Captivating the King.

Why did it take three years of marriage for them to fall in love? And if they weren't in love or at least a little attracted before, why did they get married? I'm struggling to find plausible answers to these questions, although of course I'm going to watch this anyway.

If there is a question...any question AT ALL...posed by this drama, @laurensophie has answered it.

I'll be watching too, anyway.

Marriage of convenience like those that happen in chaebol land?
That would be an interesting premise. Falling in love after marriage.

I became interested in KJW’s future roles after MLN but am indifferent to KSH. I would have loved though if Kwak Dongyeon had the main lead. He comes across as interesting, smart and soulful in his roles.

This is the third time the CLOY writer has worked with Kim Soo-hyun (You Who Came from the Stars, The Producers).

These two look SO GOOD together! I love the glimpses of both fun and intense chemistry. If it’s a marriage of convenience, I’m honestly so so down for it. I’m down for just about anything with all the names attached to this behind and on screen. But it’s looking so so good. Don’t want to up my hopes *this* high but I. Just. Can’t. Help. It.

EXCITED!!!

They didn’t communicate honestly for THREE YEARS?! They didn’t have sex for THREE YEARS?!

Oh these kdramas…. But what do I know, y’all. I’m watching it till the bitter end with all of you, Beanies! *stocking up on snacks and sending meme to my kdrama-watching-buddy friend*

These themes are just so absurd. Why can’t they have a complicated but believable relationship?

This is from a writer who ended her previous drama with a couple being happy to meet two weeks out of a year. TWO. WEEKS. OUT. OF. THE. YEAR.

If not for this writer’s talent for funny situations, dialogues and characters, none of her dramas would hold a handle to the dumbest kdrama out there. Sorry, I said it.

I am glad someone said it. I never understood the draw to CLOY. The only character I truly loved was sent south in a car. Sigh.

I really like her earlier work, in particular Queen of Reversals. I don’t mind “fantastical” scenarios in my comedies but some of these details she injects in her better known blockbuster dramas stretch the limits even of my well-worn and quite forgiving imagination. Hello! This is a rom-com, Writernim. Can we just keep some sense of “believability” in the main couple’s relationship at least, please?

(And, YES, CLOY, was the weakest of her dramas. Whatever funny it had, was often overshadowed by teariness and desperation emanating from that pitiful couple. For half of the series, I was screaming at my screen for Hyun Bin to defect and put the end to their misery, but, noooooo, that’s not what was politically correct to say on a television.)

I feel like when it comes to KDs, “what do I know”, should be my opener and closer as so many things confound me.

@bomibeans K-drama couple do not have sex. For that they migrate to movies and they let all their inhibitions hang from the roof tops.

I know I’m ranting here but…. Is it too much to hope that they at least made out ONCE in THREE YEARS? Because I cannot understand how any straight adult healthy woman can sleep next to someone who looks like Kim So-Hyun and not make a move. And during the day she STILL wonders why her heart races like hell… I hope the teaser is deceiving, and they actually not lived together for most of these years. Because my poor imagination is already stretched to the limits…

Or maybe it was a contract marriage after all with a "no sex" clause and yeah ... they haven't lived together because three freaking years!!! How and why⁉️

Bingo my friend @bomibeans. This drama cannot be watched alone without the accompanying Beanie commentary. 👏😂

Rant away. This is an endless source of frustration for me as well, and I feel that these types of completely unrealistic and unhealthy depictions of sex and sexual feelings (or the lack thereof) can do a lot of societal damage. And on a purely storytelling level, it makes it very hard for me to suspend disbelief and get into the romance.

The only explanation that would make sense in the case of this drama is if they didn't actually live together or associate much up until this point in the story. Otherwise, if I'm expected to believe that they shared a space, meals, office, conversations, and a bed but never even broached the topic of sex either with each other or in their own 30+ year old heads, I will . . . I will . . . have a lot of snippy things to say. Hmph.

Still a bit unsure on the exact premise. I thought they got married because they were in love but it all went wrong? That’s the assumption based on the first couple of teasers. Now it seems like a marriage of convenience…

Lol I’m really not sure where this story is at, but also, the last time PJE wrote a drama - the heroine literally parachuted her way to North Korea so whacky is the name of the game clearly. I’m totally fine with being in the dark on details - keeps things a whole lot more interesting vs giving the whole premise before the drama even starts.

I’m wondering about the same thing. 😂 But since this is labeled „rom com“, the angsty premise marketed by the first few teasers doesn’t really fit…? 🤔
Now I’ll just have to watch and see, what this is all about!

I never got the impression that the drama was initially marketed as angsty. The first teaser was a little too much on the com side of things for my liking (I wanted angst LOL). I think the title is what’s throwing a lot of people off.

But yea, still confused on the premise. I’m tuning in till the very end either way. Just hoping it’s good because there’s way too much expectations riding on this to not be lol

Let the tropes begin! Since it's the same writer as CLOY the female chaebol being catered to by her man was a theme that worked. I'm remembering how cute the scenes were when Se-ri had Captain Ri wrapped around her little finger and he didn't know it--or care. This could/should be fun.
