Live Your Own Life: Episodes 40-41 (Drama Highlights)

Oh, are we in the delightful makjang thick of it after Halmeoni dropped the bomb that the cousins are actually brothers. Hearing the full story, it turns out Halmeoni was quite the villain herself back in the day. Halmeoni snatched baby Tae-min from his biological mother (i.e., Tae-ho’s mom) because her eldest son couldn’t have kids, and rich businessmen must continue their bloodlines to rule the world. Or something. You’d think they were a royal family in Joseon rather than just some modern rich people the way this played out. It’s utterly ridiculous and, if you enjoy mess, amazing.

On the upside, after Tae-ho overhears the secret, he and Tae-min start reconciling their differences – they’ve always felt lonely, so they’re both tentatively happy to have gained a brother. The boys aren’t about to continue their family’s feuding brothers tradition and decide to work together to save the company when Sook-hyang readies to throw it under the bus to protect herself. Looks like the chaebol tide has turned.

Hopping over to our other makjang family, Hyo-sung is having a rough go of it since being fired, so much so that he decides to take out a loan with the family loan shark. Still, he’s helping Tae-ho behind the scenes and manages to locate the long-sought, missing director who has evidence that could put Sook-hyang behind bars. In a (failed) bid to get Hyo-sung to spill the intel, Mr. Yeom orders his muscle to beat both Hyo-sung and Hyo-do. Hyo-do can’t take seeing his older brother like this and uses Tae-hee’s restaurant’s money to pay off Hyo-sung’s loan. Then, he asks Tae-hee for a divorce. (Tae-hee seriously deserves better than Hyo-do who has done nothing but take advantage of her until it no longer suits him.)

Meanwhile, Mi-rim continues her quest to find her new family’s missing father, whether they want her to or not. (They’re all very much on the side of not.) But Mom eventually caves and grants her permission, although no one really thinks Mi-rim will succeed. Against all odds, her efforts pay off – her police friend locates their father’s most recent address, so Mi-rim and Hyo-shim take a trip to visit his supposed house. After 25 years of searching, this seems a bit too easy. We’ll have to wait and see if they’ve truly found him this time.

I hated how far back HYO-SHIM's mom regressed on LYOL- all the way back to being an infant. Her determination to use a fake "Memorial Service" to throw a tantrum again is a bad joke that was never funny to begin with. Why is she so upset at getting Mi-rim as a daughter in law? She should be thrilled! The utter irrationality of this character and her sheer unlikableness has been a drag on this show from the beginning- the less we see of her the better.

But hats off to Mi-rim for stopping mom's tantrum in the most effective way possible: By cutting right to the very heart of her complaint while effectively turning it against our horrible mom. One of the mysteries of this show is why anyone with Mi-rim's talents ever wanted to be an actress when she is so perfectly suited to being a lawyer. Isn't it better to be a star in real life than just a star on stage? Want proof of her stardom? She has located Dear Old Dad.

As for Tae-min The Silent Martyr: At least we know that he listens to his Grandmother and the Big Birth Secret has to change things. Tae-ho now knows too. But will this be enough to change Tae-min's over all approach to life? His first impulse was to resign- thank goodness that his little brother intercepted the resignation letter and is now working with him to save Taesan. That’s a little brother who actually has your back, Tae-min. Oh, and as a parting gift Soo-kyung have him a call and sent Tae-min an email to give him a warning as to what her daddy is now up to.

I will not even comment on how this switch of parents for Tae-min could have been accomplished secretly- we know it was not done legally so I will just posit that considerable corruption must have occurred and leave it at that.

As for Soo-kyung- we may not see her again. From her standpoint the marriage with Tae-min was a gamble that she lost. Given the way that Tae-min has treated both her and Hyo-shim it is hard to see any path forward with her story other than for her to look for a better husband than Tae-min. I think that the failure to capitalize on what could have been a great enemies to lovers story has been the biggest disappointment with this show. Far too much time was wasted in the first half of this show with people simply wallowing in misery and far too little time spent moving forward from that point. The same can be said for the marriage of our Macknaes- with Hyo-do now asking Tae-hui for a divorce we have yet another romance spoiled.

I very much doubt that we will see Tae-min racing to the airport to stop his ex-wife leaving the country.

Re: the legality of the parent switch. Without a doubt, fraud was committed when Dragon mom filled out the birth registration (as mother) and named her husband as the father. I imagine the family registry was also falsified, but grandfather the patriarch wouldn't have known it was a lie.

The divorce isn't final yet - It's possible that Tae Ho might be the catalyst for bringing Su-kyung back - they aren't complete strangers.

I assumed that the divorce was final because Su-kyung was leaving the country and thus would not be available to appear in court plus Chairman Choi referred to Tae-min as his ex-son-in-law. But it would be nice if you were right and there was at least the possibility of that happening. One thing is for sure: Su-kyung at her nastiest was vastly preferable to Hyo-shim's mom.

To agree further, it’s not like Hyo-Joon and Mi-Rim are in high school and they are pregnant. They are in their 30’s for goodness sake and at least MR has a good job!

I didn’t get why HS’s mother was bedridden and completely let her restaurant go…

HS’s mother is my least favorite physically abusive parent on the show! Director Yeom maybe worse but he is a “high ranking” thug! (lol)

I think maybe Korean society is more ‘something’ than in the US.
If parents did that here after 25 years they need to be told (respectfully) to get a grip! Mi-Rim maybe a good thing for the entire family. Though her “choice” of future husband is questionable!

It was actually Hyo-jun who wanted Mi-rim to stay in the study dorm. Mi-rim has simply accepted that it would be better for her child to have a father- but please note how skillfully she is stripping away the baggage that he brings, starting with putting her foot down about his mother's horrible 'Memorial Service" tantrums.

Hyo-shims mom is both childish and controlling- and that is why she was "bed ridden". It is her way of forcing her family to do her bidding. Please note that her restaurant continued to succeed- because she had manipulated others into operating it for her so that she could spend time lying down.

I think we now know why Dear Old Dad left- he was simply fed up and could not take it anymore. Because the one thing I am absolutely certain of is that Mommy Dearest's behavior did not change because he left. Instead, abandonment just became the newest excuse for childishness. I doubt that anything we see in the final episodes will change my mind- but then again, I certainly did not see Tae-min and Tae-ho as full biological brothers coming either. So, I could be proven wrong.

HS’s mom is the most and and stressful character IMO. (To me)

Hyo-Shim’s mom there is ultra manipulative and a tad evil!
Tae~HI’s aunt is evil and ultra manipulative!!!
Maybe they are two sides of the same coin?

What don’t know is… do women try to empower other women in Korea or do they perpetuate the stereotype?

The explanation that grandmother provided for why she had Mr. Yeom simply take baby Tae-min from Tae-ho’s mom and dad and simply hand him over to her oldest son has to go down as one of the lamest and least plausible plotlines of all time. I will not even comment on how this switch of parents for Tae-min could have been accomplished secretly- we know it was not done legally so I will just posit that considerable corruption must have occurred to conceal it and leave it at that. Although at least it explains why Tae-ho’s dad was grooming Tae-min to take over the company.

But it certainly has served to prove that Grandma was no saint.

I suppose that I was simply responding to the whole ridiculousness of it: Too many people would have noticed who had been pregnant and who had not. Neither Dragon mom nor Tae-ho's mom would have been kept locked away in Purdah before the birth. The truth would have come out quite rapidly and not forty years later. That is what makes it so lame as a plot-line: We are asked to believe a birth secret that could not have been kept secret for more than a week at most. There are many things in this drama which do not add up and I can tolerate most of them, but this simply could not happen because there is no way that Grandma could not have known this before she did this- and so she would not have simply because it could not work.

With this level of treachery and makjang I can see it though. if while Tae Ho's mom was only a few months pregnant with Tae min and not showing yet, then Tough Ol' Granny could've kept both women secluded (which could be why Evil Step Daughter (Tae Min's pseudo mom) would think nothing of locking Tough Ol' Granny away because "that's how we do it in the Taesun family").

The premise of Grandma's plan was ludicrous. Her sons would inherit equally. Deference to an eldest son's offspring in business succession is not mandatory but should be done by merit alone since it is a public company. It really did not matter if TM was the second son's child.

I was noticing early on that Show made no effort to make Tough Ol' Granny appear sweet or kind 😆 The only person she softened around is the little girl singer. I think it was pretty well done of Show to keep Granny standoffish to the residents of the building now that we see what she was capable of. Most shows would've had her character be very lovable and sweet to the main characters and the other tenants in the building but I must applaud👏 Show for keeping the character relatively consistent.

You make a very solid point here. It is true that her grandson's love her but that may be despite her character and not because of it. She made bad choices and now regrets them (even she can now see that sending Tae-ho away was insane) but she was capable of that because she was a ruthless person.

I have to add that I was appalled not so much at Mr. Yeom and henchmen beating up Hyo-do and his Hyung as at their reaction to it. There is an excellent chance that there is video surveillance of the place where it happened. They should have gone straight to the police. The video footage would have been quite sufficient to get Mr. Yeon fired for cause and jailed (Note: Contrary to what we see in K-dramas the ROK actually takes a very dim view of violence).

I've also been appalled for the last few episodes that Tae Ho has not done more financially to help his future brother-in-law financially stay afloat. Hyo Sung was fired because of Tae ho. But I supposed when you're very rich, your brain doesn't think about what everyday people need to survive. I know Hyo Sung would not want a hand out, but as Tae ho had said before that something like buying a gym for Hyo shim is "chump change" so making sure his future brother-in-law can survive and provide for his family until he's reinstated shouldn't be too hard.

These were probably my favorite two episodes - this weekend was all about Kang Tae Min's.

It was TAE MIN who bought the art gallery when Seo Min Jeong [Jung] passed away. And when Tae Ho discovered that fact (apparently months ago), he “resented and cursed” Tae Min for doing so. “Hasn’t he had enough?” Pa-thet-ic.

It comes as no surprise that when TaeSan was under attack, it was KANG TAE MIN who knew how to handle everything and gave out directions. Kang Tae Min was never “too stupid” to be Chairman. Meanwhile, Tae Ho just sat there in shocked silence – and finally – seemed to realize that he had no idea what it would take to be Chairman, nor did he realize how easily a company can be destroyed by public accusations, whether true or not.

Episode 40, TM went to jail for his MOTHER’s (not Dad’s) bribery!

Also, in Episode 40 – a major, perhaps THE major point of those flashback scenes was to explain (to the viewer) that Tae Min realized that his “mother” not only never loved him but had been using and manipulating him for her own personal greed and power - including her manipulation of his marriage.

I think Su-kyung returns. Between mentions by her father that she is still hung up on him and her latest action of loyalty to Tae Min, I think she returns. Maybe I'm encouraged by the Go Joo Won/Im Ju Eun interchange on Instagram where he joked "Please come back" and she responded "Can't help it if you talk like that.. ( .. 😏)". If they ever mention that the divorce is final, I'll give up hope, but if that was the plan, the divorce could easily have been finalized at this point.

I truly hope that you are right about Su-kyung's return. But it only becomes possible if Tae-min understands her value and if Su-kyung can communicate that she wants to come back because of Tae-min and not because of her father. I would like an episode where She and Tae-min finally sit down and finally have the serious conversation that Su-kyung paid a high price for.

I have a feeling that this would probably require someone (or someones) like Tae-ho and Hyo-shim learning enough about both of them to be able to show each of them what they are not seeing about the other, just so that they can finally truly talk to each other.

But the fact that he now knows where his mother was coming from might be a start towards that- particularly since he has to know that Su-kyung did not have to send him that warning- and the detailed plans- that are allowing him and his brother to take needed steps before the axe falls.

So, we shall see what happens. I am not too worried about whether or not the divorce is final- they could simply register their marriage again.

Re: the divorce. I don't believe it is publicly known until a court decree - unless I missed a scene where it was announced on TVLive. So, although they could turn around and re-register, it would be better if the public never knew about it.

I think you are correct that Tae Ho might be the key - he was the only one who showed any softness toward Su-kyung and apparently she called him as well as Tae Min regarding the bad publicity. The flashbacks clearly showed Mom insisting on the marriage and Su-kyung throwing the ring, emphasizing that he realized she also had been a victim of his mother.

Perhaps the writer wanted to bring the two brothers together first, so that Tae Ho could be the catalyst for tying up this one loose end which is completely separate from Mom's malfeasance and Dad/the accident. I would have prefered a stand-alone reconciliation (if we even get one), but Tae Ho needs something to do while Hyo Shim is chasing dad.

Divorce records in SK are public. Reporters can find those records easily. And if it is a juicy chaebol divorce, like the long running battle of SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won and his estranged wife, it can be in the news for a long time.

That was the point I was also trying to make - they are moving through the divorce process by mutual agreement, as far as I know. In that situation, the record isn't public until it is filed - which appears to be the process that HyoDo and Tae Hee are following (perhaps even an annulment? I wasn't clear).

At one point, Su-kyung asked Tae Min if he wanted to divorce by agreement or litigation and he responded he didn't care. So, my impression is they are going the agreement route - lawyers probably met to discuss compensation and Su-kyung said she didn't want alimony.

If one of them sued for divorce, then presumably that would be public information. That doesn't appear to be the case with Tae Min and Su-kyung, which begs the question, why ARE they still married, lol? Hopefully it means something positive for the viewers who care.

I'm always grasping at straws and here is the latest from Im Ju Eun's Instagram.

Why does the author want to send my favorite Choi Soo Kyung to the United States🥺"

She responded: "Oh my God... Touched 🥲 🥲 thank you"

Hoping she wouldn't be allowed to comment like that if she is gone forever. Hoping 🤞

It is not at all- but usually, as in the case of both Grandma and of our Dragon Lady, they held responsible (in the case of Dragon Lady we should maybe make that 'irresponsible') positions within the conglomerate. It is to his credit that Tae-min literally fired his 'mom' from all of her positions even before he found out about his birth secret.

SK would even expect to be given such a position (and actually work at it) at some point in the future (but probably not until her children were out of their infancy).

What does not fit being the Madam of Taesung is working outside of the company. That is why she quit. The stay-at-home mom thing is a temporary thing that would only last a few years.

The Big Birth Secret TM revelation and the subsequent brother's rapprochement was one of the few bright spots in this weekend's episodes. I have been waiting and hoping for the brothers to unite against the awful elders since the first episode. Looks like our ship has sailed. Hopefully, he has fully given up on his nasty mother, she who sent him to jail, used the company money like her own piggy bank, did all sorts of illegal and dodgy shit and now seems to be more than willing to blow everything up. Probably to flee overseas with her ill-gotten loot. Evil minion was hinting at this.

Maybe what kept Tae Min loyal was more of a sense of over-developed filial duty rather than any sort of love for his parents. I can't imagine anyone loving that harpy. Hopefully, that's all over now.

I did not imagine the look of respect Tae Ho gave Tae Min when they were strategizing ways to weather the incoming storm. He has always been aware that Tae Ho was the one who kept things going through his father's mental illness and his mother's evil plans. But his insistence on protecting his "parents" kept them at odds. Tae Ho had not blinded himself to the situation, unlike Tae Min

I have to say that my opinion of Grandmother has dropped by quite a bit. The cruelty of keeping a child away from his mother and sending her second child away, so both end up growing up lonely is entering Cruella De Vil territory. And I also wonder how she managed to keep her daughter-in-law away from her son when they both lived next door to each other.

I agree with OldLawyer that this regression from Hyo Shim's mom was unwelcome. She was doing so well with her cafe, only to abandon it and force everyone to scramble to keep it going. And for what? Because her son will be marrying a smart and outspoken lawyer? Because she will be getting her first grandchild? That's cause to celebrate, not throw a tantrum. How did she even manage to raise 4 children on her own, with no ability to be resilient? Why do all her kids just humour her? Ugh, I am so done with her.
.
Extremely disappointed with the youngest. Apart from early on, when their relationship was sort of sweet, he has shown no kindness to his wife. He took her largesse for granted. Left her planning to sell the expensive watch he gave her. Married her, figuring this was his ticket to success, and has been cold and rude to her ever since. I hope she signs the divorce paper because she deserves better.

She already has two grandchildren, but I finally watched (w/out FF button) the last 4 Hyo Jun/Mi-rim pregnancy episodes/scenes (they are a great comedic duo) and frankly I don't understand where they stand as a couple. Going to get married at some point, but is that before/after the exam and before/after baby is born. Very unclear - perhaps purposedly by the writer. Zero affection between them - writer could do better showing actual "couple conflicts" as opposed to one more plot device to find dear old dad.

I think the whole family was bringing Taemin up as the filial first son and the future heir. Plus he might have tried to compensate for the missing love he sensed from Dragon Mom.

I have commented below that this writer throws all her good ideas away. Why? 왜?? We have good actors, rich characters and interesting setup. We could have had
- Taemin going from Unrealistic First Love to Mature Partnership Love (via Enemies to Lovers arc).
- Slacker and Heiress to Responsible Worker and Commoner love story.
- Aspiring Actress and Failing Student to Working Mom Top Lawyer and Stay at Home Dad (and evening theatre assistant director?) love story.

And I could continue. Even the elders and all the makjang could have had more depth and introspective... but no. And at every sign of improvement, like Mom finally living her own life and having a successful business (I'm not going to nitpick about how realistic it is)... the writer quickly abandons it. Oh well. Let's hope the brothers stay together till the end. 🤞 They are a good team now. 🙂

I totally agree with you about our writer's laziness, because that is what it is.

It is hard work writing a true enemies to lovers romance. And please note that Tae-min's one-sided crush on Hyo-shim was not really a first love even- just a one-sided crush. Which actually should have made the enemies to love story easier simply because of the stark difference between a crush who gave you the Heisman versus a beautiful woman who moved heaven and earth to marry you.

Likewise, it is not easy showing a manchild like Hyo-do learning to love like a man. It is so much easier to just keep him a selfish prick and then have him demand a divorce. Tae-hui should sign that paper immediately and file it before he changes his mind.

Mi-rim and Hyo-jun's story actually would have been easier than the first two but we did not get that either. Just an accidental pregnancy and getting together for the baby.

What we did get instead was 24 episodes of people just being miserable and stuck in a rut (and way too many minutes watching Hyo-shim's mom lying on that couch). Then we finally got into the story proper, or rather what was left of it. I figure that this was a waste of at least a dozen episodes worth of time that could have been devoted to these stories.

This weekender is still better than the previous one- but it could have been so very much better.

As @oldawyer said, lazy writing. The writer poured everything intoTae Ho/Hyo Shim (and some of it was down-right creepy) while all other couples were and continue to be at some sub-surface non-romance level.
Just once, it would have been nice if the three brothers had shared a meal together - just as brothers, discussing their family. instead, they visited mom separately and she - rather than the siblings - continues to be the focus. Well, at least this writer gave us frequent intersected contacts (such as Hee Joo delivering food to Hyo Jun) - nothing that significantly moved the story forward but still some evidence that the family unit existed and had a foundation of love.

I had my suspicion about the young accountant and I also thought that Taemin was a full brother of Taeho. But that Grandma plainly stole Taemin AND yet they then all sort of lived together was beyond my imagination. Wow. The whole makjang around Taesan is also beyond my imagination (we are having some sympathisers with Japanese occupation now in the mix as well 🤦‍♀️), at Hyoshim's side we are spending time on searching for the missing Dad instead of on the characters' growth... and Mom is getting on my nerves. The only voice of reason seems to be... the loan shark. 😄

At least the brothers are bonding, just a shame that from the TV Lady we only got... her voice... le sigh...

I think this writer has a special gift... to screw all of the good ideas she could possibly have, like most of the romances... or Hyodo's redemption arc - he finally starts working and seems to be on the good way, especially after seeing Hyung emerging from the loan shark office... and then... then he steals money in plain sight of other guests, money which Taehee earned so hard. I just want Tae-Hee to get away from Hyo-do. She deserves much better. She is resilient and quite resourceful. She can succeed on her own without his dead weight around. Can we have independent life of Tae-Hee?

It was not about that the eldest son wasn't able to have children, it was that his father (Grandpa) considered him a total failure, he even beat him. And the younger son then managed to produce a child as the FIRST one... and a son. Grandma, in her twisted form of love, then tried to put her oldest son back into Grandfather's grace by stealing the first born (Taemin) from her second son and pretend Teamin was born to Dragon Mom. To show Grandfather that the eldest son is at least capable of this.

I loved this week's episodes a lot. Yes, Hyo-shim's mom went two steps back but I loved how she caved in to Mi-rim's wind.

I'd have preferred if Hyo-do told Tae-hee the full story about Hyo-sung. I know she'd have done something about it.

Now this birth reveal does open a whole can of worms. Tae-min's fondness and cultivated interest in art must have comforted Madam Seo(Tae-ho and Tae-min's mom). She might not be able to bond with him as a parent, but she got to watch him get involved in what she loves. As a nephew to his parents, he really loved them to the end, even though he had to take care of Tae-san at the end.

Tae-ho and Hyo-shim all lovey-dovey will never stop boring me. Too bad there's another family drama impeding the parents meeting. I'm guessing introducing this drama now affords the drama the chance to end the finale with Hyo-shim's marriage to Tae-ho. Let the obstructions begin.

Hyo-do signing the divorce papers🙄🙄. Oh puhleeeze. Is this the awakening he needed?

We all know what happens when a character announces that they're catching a flight to the US the next morning right?🤣🤣🤣. I guess Tae-min's moping life is almost over.

I loved the final scene with Tae-ho, Tae-min and the two executives doing damage control. This is the dynamic I wanted to see since Tae-ho joined the company. I wished it didn't take the birth secret for him to know that despite whatever Tae-san has done, Tae-min never meant ill for the company and was doing his very best to keep it in business.

OK, Grandma says TM’s “father” was infertile and that angered his father. When Grandfather was away in Saudi Arabia for a year, his youngest son had a child with his wife, a boy, that Grandma orders Yeom to steal to give to her oldest imbecile son. WTH? How did stealing a BABY correct the dysfunctional Kang clan? (Again, k-dramas really drop the ball on adoption as a solution.) Really, this was a very lame let-down from the cliffhanger (and our speculative theories). It all but confirms that Tae Hee is Yeom’s daughter.

TH “catches” the accountant Park BEFORE he transfers the embezzled funds then tells him TO SEND it to him. TH “plan” basically is to confess to his intentional direction (a crime in itself) to set up his aunt. But he can’t claim being a victim later on since he KNEW in advance and did not stop his aunt. Telling the accountant to transfer the funds AFTER he is arrested to his aunt’s account is still conspiring to embezzle corporate funds. Park’s testimony could convict both Evil Aunt and TH. The director tells TH that he needs “conclusive evidence” to get aunt as suspect since she is going to claim she was being “framed” (which TH can no longer claim since he directed the funds to his account and then to his aunt’s.) The idea of using past alleged crimes of embezzlement (without a conviction and after statute of limitations) to prove aunt guilty now is another legal dud since those allegations of past bad acts cannot prove alleged current ones. (It also shows that TH’s plan was shooting-from-the-hip and hoping for things to fall his way.)

Also, a new tidbit that the accounting department was “cooking the books” to make Teasan looking better makes TM’s management skills look very weak. More poor writing as TH gives the accountant a break by “covering up his crimes” in order to clean up the company.

TV CEO telling Grandma he wants to get SK and TM back together is quickly shot down by Grandma. And speaking of getting irritated, TH’s new, rude suggestion about getting married really irked HS. I wonder if HS can muster enough courage to have TH back off and just date.

The loan shark giving Hyo Sung really good financial advice was the highlight of Episode 40. When Hyo Sung got the loan, I immediately thought that TH treated accountant Park with more concern and support than he has done for Hyo Sung, who took the blame for doing nothing wrong. TH could have easily given Hyo Sung money - - - since he wants to join the family in such a bad way. He only gives the hope of reinstatement because he needs Hyo Sung to find the Missing Director. Currently, he is treating a stranger better than a future in-law. I guess the writer really wants everyone in the Lee family to hit rock bottom. before the finale. I do find it silly that Mom’s cafe is “burdensomely” busy with only six customers while Tee-Hee is running a restaurant by herself and serving 30 customers a hour.

Evil Mom’s interrogation was another farce. The prosecutor...

asking her to admit crimes like a shopping list re-check is a meaningless exercise. However, detaining her for 10 hours actually violates her rights under Korean law (and again where are her lawyers?)

Where was her legal counsel ? Aigoo.
Even though she had been relieved of all her positions at Taesan by Tae-min, she would be able to afford some high dollar legal help.
She does slap Yeom later for poor job performance.

Slapping Yeom is no substitute for a good lawyer.

In fact, Tae Min even told her that he would pay out of his own pocket for her legal counsel, but she couldn't use the corporate lawyers. but. . .that was before he found out that Mommy Dearest didn't love him and has been using and abusing him since the day he was born.

You have correctly identified a great many things that bothered me about these episodes. Writer-nim made a total hash out of both the law and corporate governance. Mom's treatment of Mi-rim was both inexcusable and infantile.

Episode 41 shows how evil Grandma was with her excuses “for the family.” Because TH would not inherit (a public company?) she sent TH to the US alone - - - which makes no logical connection between what she was saying about business plans. It was really to punish his parents. It was not “fate” but an insane plan that destroyed any hope for a normal family. The whole “respect your elders” duty makes little sense when second son had all the leverage to keep TM - - - leave the family and live his own life. Then her plea to TH not to share their bad “fate” with animosity against TM is like giving an oak tree a scholarship to run track and field.

After a long day of soul searching, TM comes to the conclusion to resign? His martyr complex is at its zenith here: but not for sainthood but for lack of courage. He was lied to, betrayed and humiliated by his “family,” but he choses to runaway like a child. TH comes by as the virtuous one of the family, the saint among sinners, to try to console and get TM back to the company. At this point it seemed like a hollow gesture. TM’s expression was utter contempt for everyone around him because WHY would he WANT to go back?

Another character change for the worse. Mirim is acting like Rubi - - overstepping her boundaries. (Again, why isn’t she going to work?)

Hyo Do runs off half-cocked like the old TH when he basically steals the chicken franchise register money to pay off his brother’s loan shark. No one in this series realizes that two wrongs do not make a right. Then he goes to break up with Tae Hee because he can no longer stand Taesan. (Maybe this is why I dislike TH... he is really like the rich version of Hyo Do; two peas in a pod of impatient recklessness.)

Evil Mom setting up husband for Pass accident with TV CEO has no bearing to get her out of her embezzlement case. But again, is anything logical in this series? Bribing a TV network with a subsidiary? But all TV Dad wants is TM to stay with SK (which I guess would give his family the inside track for Taesan’s next generation successor, his grandchild). SK gives TM the information on how her father is going to attack Taesan (stating that his deal with Grandma failed) but it seems TM does not care until TH calls him (SK called TH first?) SK’s “take care” was the standard final break up line between a couple. In a quick turn-about-face, TM leads the damage control meeting For the first time, TH realizes TM is a competent manager.

The cliffhanger is not as suspenseful as it should seem. Really, nothing HS’ father would say will change 25 years of abandonment. Adding a new character this late in the run is another symptom of how desperate the production crew is trying to get the script back on the rails. Yes, a lot of action happened this week, but none of it was good execution of a coherent story.

The blind obedience of children to their elders is a mainstay in weekenders, but this series pushes the limits that Korean entertainment...

For the first time, TH realizes TM is a competent manager.

This annoyed me a whole lot while loving it play out. Why? Because it is too contrived. What blinded Tae-ho to reason before when Tae-min said protecting Tae-san was his life? Why the change now.

It is done so I'll just take it like that.

Your explanation for why Chairman Choi wants his daughter to stay with TM is actually rational- Tae-san is the 'goal' but not because marriage somehow leads to a takeover (it does not) but because of the fact that his grandchild would be the heir and likely successor to TM.

You are right about the cliffhanger.

SK called TH first because only TH had been friendly to her.

A Tae-ho + Tae-min actual bromance would have been something I would have loved to have seen started about 10 episodes ago...anyone else? Think of the adorable (and makjang!!!) possibilities!!!

I'm with you all, "Oh, what could have been."

It is not just the bromance, it's nearly EVERY relationship, being it bonding between the Lee brothers... or connection between Hyoshim and Mirim... and Taehee...

But now we are seeing an end to the relationship possible between Tae-hui and her sisters-in-law- unless she refuses to sign the divorce agreement.

This drama did do something I have never seen before: all of the couples are unlikeable or incompatible or have no business together. TH and HS: HS family may be a terrible burden on her but TH's family is horrible, arrogant and criminal. Misery loves company but why would anyone root for HS to leave one bad situation into a worse one? Mirim and Hyo Joon: She is just getting back to her successful law career while HJ continues to sulk in his self-pity privilege without any drive to succeed. How is a pity sex child a stable foundation for this couple of complete opposites? Tae-Hee and Hyo Do: Tae Hee is the most hard working, principled character on the show; the only one who actually grew into a responsible adult. HD continues to be a child who wants the easy life without any effort or responsibility. Tae Hee deserves better than being fake married to a leech who has no common sense.

It would be great if HS, Mirim and Tae Hee ditched their men and ran off to Jeju to jointly open a health food restaurant/fitness club.

OMG, I'm 100% behind your dream plot there at the end...only, can this fitness club actually have a fried chicken place attached to it? I mean, "health food" makes sense, but "fried food" makes oh-so-much-more sense!!! 😉

Also free law advice for patrons? I mean what a dream!! I'll place my spare millions in any business you design, @welh.

Fitness club with a fried chicken place sounds like a plan. 😊

Though it would be nice if HS, MR and TH are shown to get along after all the makjangy issues of the families are resolved.

I don't know if this is what you may have wanted, @al118, but you inspired me to go ahead and make the gif of Tae-min doing pushups while in prison: https://www.dramabeans.com/activity/p/1535694/.

While I was at it, I decided to threaten Ha Joon if he ever even THINKS of doing another weekender.

You're welcome?

@welh was wondering why they would transfer the money from the paper company to the aunts account so soon. Defeated the purpose. Looks like Tae Ho orchestrated that. As silly as this show is, that is a slightly better situation
My hatred of Hyo Shim’s mother has not lessened over 40 episodes lol. She is a piece of work. But I feel a good part of the blame has to rest on her offsprings for enabling her constantly.
As much fun as it was to see Darth Vader get b$tch slapped, I didn’t like that it was dragon mom who did it. Lol
To me it seemed like Hyo Do finally grew up in episode 41, which was why he asked Tae Hui for divorce. I think she should give it to him. But I think she likes him so she may try for reconciliation

Hyo Do and Tae Hui have a paper marriage/marriage of convenience and presumably never consummated. I'm fine with the divorce and then - agreement to seriously date. I think that will be the final resolution.

If only they could do something similar for Tae Min and Su Kyung!! They are older and deserve their happy ending!

It really does not matter to me how HD and TH go about building a functional and loving relationship- the route does not matter as much as the goal. But is it really possible at this point?

But as far as TM and SK: Yes, they both deserve a happy ending, either separately or together. On paper they are perfect for each other but that does not take into account the baggage that has accumulated. TM needs to change his whole perspective of SK while SK is now very deeply hurt. Given that TM's entire world has just been turned upside down it might be possible, and Chairman Choi says that his daughter is still hung up on TM (The first independent confirmation we have had that she has genuine feelings for TM) so it may be possible, but it is still a really tall hill to climb.

I think I can safely say that virtually none of us are completely satisfied with the show's character and story lines. However, despite some plot holes that are deeper and wider than the Grand Canyon, it would appear that this is better than the average weekender; as this is the first one I have watched, I cannot judge.

Given the comments about the writer and their apparent failings (laziness?) compared to previous shows, I wonder if the problem is the required format for weekender shows. I am not trying to excuse the faults, but is it possible that the writer cannot provide more regarding depth character and partner development due the requirement to produce a fluffy, simple piece of weekend "entertainment" that a large number of the audience can watch without having to think about the deeper issues affecting their day-to-day lives.

As a comparison, I am watching Doctor Slump and one of the things I have noticed is the underlying "commentary" about the damage done by a student/adult focusing on studying and success, to the exclusion of everything else. Park Shin-hye's character (Nam Ha-neul) is presented as someone who did nothing but study as a student. As an anaesthesiologist, she did nothing but work and cover for her abusive boss. The result was a diagnosis of clinical depression and her resignation. This story line should raise the question "Was it really worth it?"
