Ji Hyun-woo cheers Im Soo-hyang on in Beauty and the Devoted
by solstices
Script reading stills are out for the upcoming KBS weekender Beauty and the Devoted, which paints a fairytale romance between a disgraced top star and her most ardent supporter. As she rebuilds her life, our heroine will experience significant growth and forge a new outlook on life.
Said celebrity is the famous actress Park Do-ra, played by Im Soo-hyang (Kokdu: Season of Deity). Having built her way up since her debut as a child star a decade and a half ago, Do-ra is beloved by the masses and the breadwinner of her family. However, the constant pressure from her mother, who’d been the impetus behind her initial foray into the ruthless entertainment industry, leaves Do-ra disillusioned and drained. Tired of toiling through the days as a money-making machine, Do-ra eventually falls from grace.
Luckily for Do-ra, Ji Hyun-woo (Young Lady and Gentleman) is there to catch her. As the maknae assistant director Go Pil-seung, he harbors ambitious dreams and fervent passion, but his experience pales in comparison. When he meets Do-ra on a filming set, unexpected developments arise. Whether it’s love at first sight — or whether it’s an gradual burgeoning of unintended feelings — has yet to be revealed, but either way, Pil-seung is about to become her number one fan.
Pil-seung’s character is also listed under the name “Go Dae-chung,” which makes me snicker, because it implies he changed his name from “average” to “sure-win.” Indeed, his new moniker is an apt one — not only will he support Do-ra through her crisis, but he’ll also help her turn her life around. Will our pure-hearted man be able to win over his damsel in distress, or will his rose wither away in its glass dome?
Rounding out our sprawling cast, we also have Cha Hwa-yeon (Divorce Attorney Shin), Park Sang-won (It’s Beautiful Now), and Lee Il-hwa (Eve), just to name a few. The familial relationships are extensive and mighty complicated, so here’s hoping the drama remains lighthearted and makjang-free.
Brought to us by the team behind My Only One, namely PD Hong Seok-gu (Homemade Love Story) and writer Kim Sa-kyung (Young Lady and Gentleman), Beauty and the Devoted is slated to premiere on March 23.

I watched a handful of episodes of Young Lady and Gentlemen, I liked it initially but the makjangy mid episodes always makes me lose interest. Hopefully this will be better. Maybe it will as long as its a different writer from LYOL?

It is a different writer- and also different from the weekender which preceded it.
Please note that it is quite acceptable to bail out of a Weekender. Most recently I bailed out of REVOLUTIONARY SISTERS, to give just one example.
In fact, I have decided. based upon that experience, that I have added a new additional criterion for pulling the plug: If, after watching four episodes you find that you strongly dislike a majority of the characters then it is highly unlikely that this will change, and you will not enjoy the show.

I liked a lot of the characters on A Young Lady and Gentleman but still bailed out midway. LYOL was different. I liked a few and loved to hate another handful. I still bailed out more than midway.
Maybe some storylines combination with makjangy elements just doesnt work for me. There are some lengthy cdramas that I can sit through all the way to the end with no problem. I suppose if I liked it more than halfway then maybe I can complete a weekender with no problem. Or until it can continue to capture my interest. I am sleepy and rambling so I hope this makes sense.

Do I give another weekender a try? I like the idea of the FL having the support of the ML from nearly the start -- as opposed to being a sad sack abused by her family for half the show's episodes. I'm cutting bait at the first bout of amnesia, though!

I’m scarred by the 2 back to back ridiculous weekenders I’ve (mostly) watched so no more for me but I wish you an interesting and enjoyable experience.

With any other female lead, perhaps. Then again, the premise doesn't intrigue me. If anything, I find it kind of meh. But I might follow the story via weecaps, other Beanies' comments, etc.

‘The familial relationships are extensive and mighty complicated, so here’s hoping the drama remains lighthearted and makjang-free’👈🏾 I thought all weekenders had makjang as part of their definition as without it it would only stretch to a 16 episode drama🤣

Yes, this! I just assumed a certain amount of makjang was expected whenever you have a drama go this long! Plus, “complicated family relationships” is basically kdrama-speak for “birth secret” 😂

No, makjang is not a requirement- far from it. For a completely makjang free weekender I would watch ONCE AGAIN or FIVE CHILDREN.

I have decided to stay away from the weekenders. Last two weekenders I watched were duds (real and Hyo Shim) and I don't believe third time is a charm.

I feel your pain, I didn’t realise there were different types of dramas and that’s why some were longer than others. I enjoyed the couple of weekenders I saw by chance despite the over the top elements like the shouting and screaming in people’s work place setting, full on hair pulling fights and mother in laws that were outrageous. Then I chose the wrong weekender and realised there were different leagues and there are very few that are amazing and worth the watch. Old Lawyer has a wealth of experience in this area so any he recommends like Once Again, which was one of the ones I watched by chance, will stand out compared to the duds you wasted your time on. I hope you find some decent normal length dramas that do bring joy.

The FL of the last weekender made me have high hopes for it. But we all know where that got us. Now I have minus zero interest in this FL but I like the rest of the cast and story. Ottoke.

Nope nope! Young lady and gentleman you cant top him and "dan dan". The chemistry was amazing. The series is top notch. Id find it very hard to believe he could top it off again esp with a diff lead lady.
Hes my fav fav actor but this series looks nowhere near as good as young lady and gentleman

LOL. I have already pitched my tent in Camp NO and raised the NO flag over it. Come by for a drink!
I liked Ji Hyun-woo a lot in Queen Inhyun's Man (2012), which is the only show in which I've seen him, but Im Soo-hyang makes it a hard NO no matter who is next to her.

@elinor: May I have a mojito and a daiquiri and a G&T? kF blues. The bastards. So rude to deprive us not only of more flirting but leaving us with just a tease at the end. I want to boycott something in protest but what???

Please be Makjang free. Please.
And, to echo others, amnesia free too. The writer owes us that after inflicting not one but two amnesia arcs on us in YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN.
On the other hand- and to be fair- YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN was the most recent Weekender which was a ratings hit. But not because of amnesia but because of good chemistry among the actors.
