[Drama Chat] Underrated dramas that deserved better

There are those dramas that are good and everyone knows it. Then there are those dramas that are hidden gems and word of mouth also leads everyone to know it. But what about the dramas that have just been generally (and criminally) underrated and underappreciated?

It might be because the drama aired when another more attention-grabbing show was also running, or maybe the drama in question just didn’t have a flashy presence or a sexy young cast. Or maybe there’s another less obvious reason the show just didn’t take off the way it should. It happens.

Some of the underrated dramas that come to mind for me are: VIP (pictured), Like Flowers in Sand, Love All Play, My Lovely Boxer, and Trolley. And there are probably about fifty other titles that I wish got more love. What are yours?

What are some dramas you think are sorely underrated? Now’s your chance to give them the spotlight they deserve.

I had my two underrated Kdramas that deserved better for me which both bosses in the titles:
- My Horrible Boss (2016, JTBC)
- Introverted Boss (2017, TvN)

My Horrible Boss is a great choice, I was happy to see Lee Yo-won again and it was a good character. It's always fun to see Yoon Sang-hyun also (he'll always be Oska to me, even though I didn't like Secret Garden that much).

My Horrible Boss is so underrated.

I tend to think of Introverted Boss as being more of the 'failing to live up to its potential' kind of drama.

IMO, Love All Play messed up its own story in 2nd half with unnecessary conflict for the ML.

I keep seeing references on different threads to The Matchmakers as both a "hidden gem" and "underrated," when it appears to be both popular and highly rated—currently 9.3 on Dramabeans. It actually qualifies as "overrated" on my personal list!

I considered below two criteria when I listed down the above dramas, so "The Matchmakers" was included:
A) Low online buzz outside of DB.
B) Low ratings when it aired in SK.

I keep seeing references on different threads to The Matchmakers
Yes, because beanies will never let go of opportunities to promote good dramas and to ignore it or pick it up is always upto the individual's choice.

Considered from that angle, it makes perfect sense.

That’s why this prompt is so slippery—we’re each working with our own criteria for determining what qualifies as “underrated”!

I guess I need to ask a question back: Underrated by whom?

Dramabeans is my world. Beanies tell me what to watch and appreciate, so none of my dramas feel underrated...certainly not Like Flowers in Sand or The Matchmakers!! Now, I can disagree with how much or how little Beanies really like a show, but that's different than it being underrated to me.

And, the times I go and watch non-Beanie-discussed dramas, I just miss the Beanies.

HOWEVER (하...지...만!), seeing the cast and the promo poster of VIP up there makes me want to go and watch right away...because @missvictrix told me to 😁

Required fields are marked *

See, this is what I mean. To talk about something being "underrated," does that just mean "People didn't like it as much as I did?" That's not such an interesting conversation to me. Lots of people like things more or less than I did!!

I gather that the point is "How much a show gets talked about at all" and not on Dramabeans? Or, yes, on Dramabeans?

7
10
reply

Required fields are marked *

I thought in general. Dramas that didn't make a lot of buzz in Korea, didn't win awards, etc. This kind of things.

On dramabeans, it's very different.

6
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's fine, but that many of us (like me) might know very little about these things is my point, and it would be a shame if this thread devolved into "It's not underrated...I LIKED IT!!" which is not the measure of how much buzz it got in Korea or how many self-proclaimed awards it received.

3

If I were to use the literal definition of "underrated," I guess I could go down my spreadsheet (everyone keeps one, right?) and identify shows that I rated significantly higher than various rating sites. Using Dramabeans as a point of comparison, it would be a fairly short list:
Circle: Two Worlds Connected
Hotel del Luna
Secret Love Affair
Tell Me That You Love Me

Using this same system, the list of shows that would qualify as "overrated" by my standards would be much, MUCH longer.

Required fields are marked *

@missvictrix please can we have the overrated post soon I have my list ready too😆

5

That's treading on dangerous ground...
I'm not sure I'm brave enough to cast aspersions on any drama that might be someone else's cherished favorite.

5

They have had the post already and it was one of the most popular drama chat posts😆 It’s all about the wording it was called: The drama you couldn’t love even though you wanted to.

3

When you put it that way, it seems safe. 😅

3

Tell Me is so criminally underrated. Sigh.. for me it’s such a classic.

6

Aah yes -- Secret Love Affair and Tell Me That You Love Me !

5

This reminds to rewatch Secret Love Affair. (And the hilarious parody of it on Running Man, which as you know is a true mark of a drama that “made it”.)

4

VIP ranks among my favorite shows (though I can understand why it may not be to everyone's taste). Here's what I wrote on Dramabeans back when I watched the show about a year ago:

There was so much to appreciate: the way the slow reveals and misdirections mirrored the way things unfold in real life; the nuanced portrayals of relationships in their many forms and complexities; painting characters in subtle colors, rather than in black and white; the willingness to leave some plot threads open-ended; and—above all—the bravura performances of the entire cast, especially Jang Na-Ra and Lee Chung-Ah.

3

Required fields are marked *

I don't think VIP was underrated either. If you look up Asianwiki you can see the rating is up high there breaking double digits (10-14%) which is very good! It is a SBS series, no wonder with the high rating. It was quite popular back then in my country as well, people usually watch it before/after watching World of the Married (which is another hit affair drama)

But it is also very un-SBS-like in the sense that it is understated and restrained in execution (IMHO the tone that I got the majority of SBS series are quite ... over the top and .... energetic)

2

Required fields are marked *

I had the same question when reading the prompt.
And I think I also need some examples of the 2 types mentioned below too, since it is confusing to me.

There are those dramas that are good and everyone knows it. Then there are those dramas that are hidden gems and word of mouth also leads everyone to know it.

6

Required fields are marked *

I'm with you, Claire. It's never the case that "everyone" thinks a drama is good and it's certainly never the case that "everyone" knows about any given drama (there are too many)!!

I get that this was a loose use of "everyone," but the word is often used to mean "everyone who's anyone," which is an in-crowd mentality that actually creates an out-crowd.

Happy to be part of the out-crowd, though!! I like it here.

7
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm just going by buzz. So something like Flowers in the Sand feels like a hidden gem.
It was a drop for me, but I'd maybe classify Call it Love as underrated too. Those who love it love it hard, but I hadn't even taken notice of it until eoy lists came out.
Though a lot of this is going to be subjective, I guess.

5

Required fields are marked *

It pains me that it was the case but…
LFIS was cherished, still missed and much discussed by those of us who fervently loved it as well as recommended by those of us who watched it but objectively - for what it’s worth - based on the few(er) comments, it could be interpreted as fitting missvictrix’s prompt. We were a small but mighty band but looking at the numbers of popular DB posts (albeit in some of these current ones, one/few commenters might make the majority of the gushing comments), the LFIS looked like it couldn’t compete. But we knew better. It will always live in our memory and for as long as it is streamed, we can be reminded again why we loved it so much.
Now, why wasn’t it embraced by the Korean viewers even if more knowledgeable Beanies commented that for the ENA, the numbers were not catastrophic? Why, why, why? I would love to read a longform article on this.

Well, I hear you, but I don't think that the number of people who like a drama or talk about a drama is any measure of that drama's worth. It's enough for me to have cherished friends like you to share any old drama with!

I'm glad to see that Verge is getting some love.

Some of the great K-dramas (Misaeng; My Ajussi; Hot Stove League...) feature a professional just being a professional despite the chaos of a toxic workplace. This is one of them.

Jung Jae-Young is an unlikely leading man to set against a Nam Goong Min, Lee Sun-Kyun, or even Lee Sung-Min - which is possibly why the show is underrated - but as the unassuming engineer/hero, he's excellent.

The following are three I don’t see mentioned much, but Ioved!

Fake It Til You Make It - This Chinese corporate romance drama was slower paced but did such a great job exploring the challenges single women face both in the work force and in their personal lives. And I loved the way the romance progresses from a solid base of friendship to more, even though the male lead is awfully flirty from the start. Who can resist Elvis Han?

The Veil - Such a roller coaster ride! With a protagonist who can’t even trust his own memories, you never know what’s going to happen next. Plus, Namgoong Min with muscles and a fierce glare is my kryptonite.

The Package - as someone who adores travel, this show did such a great job of portraying what makes travel such a life-affirming and life-changing experience. It was really interesting seeing that experience from the point of view of a tour guide.

Some of my favorite underrated gems:
Mixed Up Investigation Society: Low budget and hard to find, but utterly unique, funny, and surprisingly moving as it follows a ragtag band of treasure hunters searching for gold under the streets of Seoul
The Return of Iljimae: A lovely, haunting fable that that jettisons most of the structural cliches of k-drama to examine the rewards and costs of a hero's journey
Beautiful World: A powerful family drama with a dynamite cast that explores how the values of parents, for good or ill, get passed on to their children.
Liar Game: Dark, twisty, and so, so much fun. Never knew math could be this sexy.
Capital Scandal: A jazzy rom-com set during this Japanese occupation really shouldn't work, and yet it surprisingly mostly does, in part because it's remarkably insightful about how people survive in times of terror. Also has the best SFL ever.

I have said this before and I'll say this again:

TOMORROW is an extremely underrated drama and I think it's mainly because it tackles taboo social issues without sugarcoating the costs. It's not a healing drama - it's a drama that makes you uncomfortable by forcing you to think about the most difficult topics that you'd rather not face such as suicide, bullying, sexual slavery, misogyny, domestic violence etc.

I've seen the animosity that many Beanies have shown towards it in the comments sections under the episode recaps and was stunned.

On another note: Is it just me or has Rowoon shown a keen eye for more often than not picking excellent dramas to star in? Even those that are cheesy are still very engaging, IMHO. And I have to admit that he is in the way to being a fine actor.

Birthcare centre
Navillera
Race
Girls generation 1979/Lingerie girls generation

Navillera and Girls Generation 1979 are so good!

I just loved that Navillera dealt with themes regarding growing old that I feel like many dramas don't venter around. Not that they're nonexistent in drama land. But this show really centered on that as a theme.

Yes we saw what he could do whereas in most dramas with ann elderly person with dementia, the loss of self is the main focus for that character.

Navillera is a well known drama (maybe because of Song Kang's fame). Now the manhwa is being published here in Spain.

Girls Generation 1979 is another story. It seems almost nobody knows this minidrama.

That’s good that Navillera got some recognition because it is that good.

I liked Race a lot too. The ending was rather silly, but it didn't ruin the show.

I think Race was probably one of the, if not the most, underrated drama of last year.

Wait, I remember "Avengers social club" had good ratings in SK, but I don't know why it was never picked up by DB.

Nevillera is also underrated imo. The acting of the protagonist (the old male alone) deserved recognition.

Thank you for mentioning Birthcare center! I love it, very funny and centered around women's experiences of childbirth and motherhood.

INSIDER is one of my favorite thrillers I don't see mentioned a lot. An awesome peice with character progression.

Diary of a Prosecutor was excellent and is not listed on DB. It’s not a romcom, although the leads have great chemistry, with Lee Sun kyun and Jung Ryeo won, but is more about what right or wrong look like in everyday life and good choices over flashy fame. The best story is about LSK’s family.

2. On the verge of insanity

I wish more watch Kairos and OTVOI. I remember being the only one superhyped each week for Kairos, same with OTVOI. Years later, Kairos is still my no 1 thriller drama recommendation meanwhile OTVOI for slice of life.

Underated fantasy romcom: Perfume

Drama had heart in abundance. Don't be dithered by the early eps, it gets better. Min Ye Rin and Min Jae Hee's journey was the show and was satisfying to see.

I liked Perfume! It was cute and there aren't enough Shin Sung Rok dramas imo.

I also liked Kairos :)

Kairos is on my list of underrated KDramas, as well. I never see it talked about on KDrama fan platforms which is astounding because it is such a fabulous show.

Since I'm sure it was the conversation that sparked this post, I have to mention the wonderful 2018 youth drama Just Dance (aka Dance Sport Girls).

I agree it’s a shame this is on the list, once I watched this as recommended by a beanie I could not believe more beanies were not singing its praises. It covers issues for the adults and the young people trying to survive in a town that was built around a declining industry. This reflected the situation across the globe at that time so most people from that era can relate see Billy Elliot for the UK equivalent re the mining industry.

I have so many, but Idol: the Coup is up there for me. It was written by the same person who wrote Misaeng and it's just so good.

It's a very modest show, but it's full of cool musical numbers. I left it on hold but I watched several episodes (9 or 10). I'll have to take it up someday.

I don't think I've seen it mentioned yet, so I'm nominating Pegasus Market. I think I first saw it being discussed by @oldawyer, and sought it out based on his recommendations. This drama was underrated, but also hampered by being very hard to find and access. It's a warm, weird, quirky comedy - think humor that's in the same ballpark as Gaus Electronics, but warm and loving instead of sharp and uncomfortable (although I also enjoyed Gaus). In the US, it can currently be found on the CJ ENM channel on Apple TV+, and is well worth seeking out. It's hilarious and touching at the same time. It's the first drama series I bought on DVD to always be assured I could access it!!

I definitely second your nomination of PEGASUS MARKET.

At the time that I watched it PEGASUS MARKET was available with English subtitles on a service named On Demand Korea. It is a fabulous comedy that in my experience has only been equaled by the first season of WELCOME TO WAIKIKI although GAUS ELECTRONICS was also very good- but nowhere near as warm hearted as PEGASUS MARKET.

But you a right that it is hard to find, and I am totally at a loss as to why that should have happened. It definitely deserved a wider audience.

I want to thank you again for first mentioning and recommending Pegasus Market - you called it "warm hearted," and it absolutely is!!! It's one of the loveliest comedies I've ever seen, and it's a shame it's not more readily available.

I decided to do something about this for those of us who do not have Apple TV+. Viki has a function for nominating shows and I just went there and submitted PEGASUS MARKET as a requested show. Nothing may come of it of course and it may be that Apple TV+ has exclusive rights but it is a somewhat older show (it was broadcast about four and a half years ago) so it was worth a shot.

I didn’t realise this was a hidden gem I just assumed I was late to the party. This was great apart from the random tribe, not sure what that was about but I think they could have found a way to include their role without making them a Stone Age culture😳

That tribe is a significant element in the story- and one that totally subverts and mocks the notion that such people are somehow inferior: They are omnicompetent people who can literally do anything and yet have been marginalized and discriminated against- until the President of PEGASUS MARKET gives them the chance that has been refused to them by everyone else.

I agree they are integral to the story but it’s the extreme nature of their otherness in appearance that I feel was a step too far. We all know it doesn’t take much to be seen as ‘less than’ Koreans, like a lot of cultures, have issues with their own nationals who are dark skinned or have a country accent or attended a less prestigious university so whilst I get they probably didn’t want to choose a real nationality or culture I feel they could have made it more realistic whilst still getting the message across.

Some comedies- like a SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER by Oliver Goldsmith or Sheridan's SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL deliver their messages subtly. But sometimes it takes a club- and that is a much older fashion (as in most of the plays by Aristophanes). In this case we are talking about an endemic and broad-based attitude in Korean society (and other societies too). A club is perhaps more appropriate.

And it did have the advantage- just as you noted- that it was so obviously NOT about any actual ethnic group.

^^ @oldawyer Thank you my eyes widened in joy to read Sheridan's name. The Rivals just happens to be my all time favorite. 😍
