Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (January 27, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Currently covering: Like Flowers in Sand

My Happy Ending: Oh no, I’m starting to not like this. The fact that people are manipulating Jae-won — now that they/we know about her mental illness — is super upsetting to me. I now find myself more sad than anything while watching, and that’s not what I signed up for. There was also a frightful lack of Lee Ki-taek this week. My ship. It’s sinking.

Marry My Husband: Wowwww Episode 7 was my favorite squee-full episode of anything I’ve seen in a long while. The high of those two ending OTP scenes (allowance heart mark and water-save) stayed with me for the whole week! But really, my favorite thing about the drama this week was that it took the time and space to have our leads talking about their shared time-travel experience, trying to figure out the rules, and discussing their plans to move ahead. Most dramas don’t take the time for this stuff, but I’m glad Marry My Husband did, since it underscored the shift in their rapport. After thinking the reveal between them came a bit too soon, I now actually love the timing — it sets us up perfectly for the second half of the show (as does the quick shift and callback at the end of Episode 8).

Currently covering: Flex x Cop

Marry My Husband: What can I say? I’m hooked. This is the drama I look forward to each week (best part of Mondays), and every time Ji-hyuk gives Ji-won sad puppy eyes I just wanna scoop him up and tell him he can change his future, too. Min-hwan is a villain I love to hate. He’s a total scumbag, but he’s such an idiot (re: marriage proposal in original timeline) that I find myself laughing and forgetting that he’s also an abusive jerkface.

Welcome to Samdal-ri: I may have gotten a little misty-eyed during Sam-dal’s exhibit. I’m surprised she went back to her old job, though, given how everyone ditched her and then came crawling back when it was proved she was innocent. I was expecting her to travel abroad with Yong-pil and become a different kind of photographer. I also wish I could have savored Eun-joo’s downfall more. I felt like at least one video of her going postal should have been uploaded to YouTube to make her just desserts seem more balanced with all the hell she put Sam-dal through. Overall, though, I’m pretty happy with how this one ended.

I'll have nothing to watch from Monday to Thursday after next week 🥺.

COMPLETED
My Demon - I think him vanishing into embers might have had more impact if I hadn’t seen the same thing two hours earlier in the Cupid show. So he's still a demon and she'll just die as a human and then what?

My Man is Cupid - This was at least thematically consistent with the 1000 days of prayer part. I liked the tiny glimpse of the future.

Welcome to Samdal-ri - Not enough YongDal and not enough come-uppance for Eun-joo in the finale. But parts of the show were sweet - the exhibition was nice.

ONGOING
Knight Flower - It's funny that the Officer basically knows everything about her already. The second couple's interactions are fun.

Like Flowers in Sand - The new cop buddies are cute. I was right about the culprit💅.

STARTED
Sejak - Only watched the first episode so far. Might have been more impactful if not for My Dearest having just done better. Did anybody else think the King was faking his distrust of his brother 🤔? Side note - it's slightly sad that Jang Young-nam is playing mother to men only 7-8 years younger than her in two different shows right now.

WATCHLIST
Doctor Slump and Flex x Cop (Still hate this name!)

C-DRAMAS
Completed The Hope. Excellent till the end. The '12 years later' felt a bit tacked-on and unnecessary to the story but parts of it were funny.

Started Stories of Youth and Love. It's okay, I guess? I didn't realise the story would rely so heavily on flashbacks so there's an odd disconnect every time we move back and forth.

Looking forward to Amidst a Snowstorm of Love next week.

You're absolutely correct here. My Dearest did a too good job that'll be hard to measure up to.
I'm glad Sejak(which also sounds nice beside Captivating the King) didn't dwell deeply/spend too much time on the history cause I'm not in the frame of mind to have another My Dearest take on the subject matter. I'm glad they wrapped it up in the premiere week. Sejak's honorable mention route worked pretty well for me.

Last night I finished my 30 episode journey with Zhang Ruo Yun (and terrific young actors) in the high school cdrama THE HOPE (available subbed on Youku’s Youtube channel). I loved it. ZRY did it again. He picked a great project and gave a great performance. All of his 5 students’ (and Shen Yao)’s stories were resolved nicely. The last episode was not a sort of kdrama crash landing but more of a head scratcher. It was a 12 year jump and what are we all doing now thing. I felt sorry for the young actors who at the end were replaced with older actors with me the problem being trying to figure out who was who.

Right? The 12 year jump wasn't bad per se but it was confusing and like I said rather unnecessary. Strong agree about ZRY's performance!

ZRY is far far ahead of the idol actors in c-dramaland. He chooses interesting projects and is a damn good actor. I heard that The Hope is an adaptation of a j-drama. Have you seen the original?

Captivating the King - That was a solid premiere. This is my first Jo Jung-seok saguek and it's been a blast. Shin Se-kyung...? It is not equal but it is impressive. However, I can't separate her acting here from her acting in Arthdal Chronicles. In a positive light, I think she really shines in playing her characters with this mystique aura around them so even though she carries her performance in a still way, it still has this air of class. And the characters she plays requires them to maintain that classic facet which she perfectly understands how to mirror.
I would love a little dynamics from her end though.
Sohn Hyun-joo is unrecognizable here. I almost didn't recognize Choi Dae-hoon. It took a lot of piercing gazes to know he's King-hyung and Sohn Hyun-joo - I was done pairing each actor in the news bites to each key character.

LNTS - I loved this one. I didn't expect to like it. Samuel's friend from episode one is the worst. I'm very sure he was trying to bully+shut up Samuel which is why he told his wife about Samuel's car situation and money need so his wife will talk to Woo-jin. His plan backfires and he still acts like the victim, again. If Samuel was Woo-jin, I know how much douchefriend will cough.

Goryeo-Khitan War - Gam-chan putting his opinion aside to assist the King was spot on.

Live Your Own Life - Father figure...? Really? Gosh!!! Hyo-shim needs reorientation cause her head ain't in the right emotional space to date at all.

LIVE WATCHES
Marry My Husband
I think I'm learning something: if I'm not loving or hating a show...I'm dropping the show. I've got no middle-ground. I'll forgive and forgive and forgive--until I don't. Like with My Demon. I forgave all the faults that we all could plainly see until some switch flipped and I began to really despise it all. There wasn't really a moment when I thought, "Oh, it's fine, I'll keep watching. I'm ambivalent!" Right now, I love MMH! Let's not think further.

Flowers in Sand
I love also the Flower Show, and am sad that we had a case of the dreaded "Sports Intervention." Or worse, possibly a case of, "Oh, shit that ending's not gonna fly." Either way, I'm afraid it's not going to end satisfactorily...there literally aren't enough minutes remaining.

I liked it a lot. It's not perfect (what show is, except maybe Healer?) but it's super fun and has a great romance. With all the love and respect in the world to the beanies who hate it, it's a classic example of people having different reactions to and opinions of the same material. I literally have a whole essay about why I love it. There are some dated elements, like the 2012 styling and the screechy friend, so do think of it as a period piece if you choose it. I rewatched it last year and there was actually less crying than I remembered.

For context: I really like time-travel/alternate-worlds stories if they're done well (this one is, in my opinion) and I watched QIHM in the context of two of the writer's other shows that explore those themes (Nine: Nine Time Travels and W - Two Worlds), paying as much attention to the mechanics and the implications and results of the time travel as to the romance, so that no doubt affects my take on this show.

I haven't seen Spies and can't compare.

@midnight Could I ask you to be a little more specific about your dislike? That would really help me! Was it thematic? Was it a particular character?

2

@attiton

Well I wouldn't like to badmouth a show loved by so many, but since you're asking...

The ml character is named as the epitome of green flag around here, but to me he was very conceited and condescending. I never did warm up to him.

The fl character kept reminding me of Liesl in The Sound of Music. A 16 year old being swept off her feet by too much sudden attention. Very immature.

The romance was unreasonably fast. I think they only used too soon kisses and the fl initiating them for shock value and drawing in viewers. It was in no way earned and heartfelt to me.

The fl cried incessantly for more than half the show and after a few episodes I was ready to scream at her.

I HATED the ending scene, the resolution to the show.

There are a lot more reasons in the same vein but they might be spoilery.

There is exactly one 2-second scene in this whole show that I loved and will forever remember.

5

I'm in the same boat - I haven't seen Spies Who Loved Me, either! I know my mom watched and enjoyed it, but she's a big fan of the ML 😉

I absolutely hated all of the secondary characters, and I really dislike when female leads are written as immature, selfish and stupid and this is supposed to make them endearing. The massive power/maturity imbalance between the male and female leads also made the romance really uncomfortable for me.

Welcome to Samdal-ri (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D+ / D / D / D- / D- / D- / D-
His characterisation in The Kidnapping Day wasn’t great but at least Kang Young Seok could try and act. I also bemoan how underused Sazal Mahamud was as compared to Gaus Electronics (diversity casting lol).

My Man Is Cupid (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D+ / D / D / D / D- / D- / D-
Huh, after spending a significant amount of screen time building up the secondary couple, we don’t get to see their reunion scene? Then what was the point of all of that? But then again the show was literally introducing new rules during the finale.

My Demon (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D / D / D- / D- / D- / D- / D-
Look, all Gu Won needed to do was teleport himself and Do Hee away once he had distracted the villain! Why hug and wait for the gun to be shot? I know, because we had to pad this finale with some really pointless drama while limping to the end.

A Shop for Killers (Episode 3-4) - Mood: C-
Well, I was hoping against hope that it wasn’t the childhood friend but Jin Man would’ve never been killed in a fight when Ji An couldn’t even get near him (and she was clearly his main weakness). The plot did lose my interest with all the gratuitous action scenes and it does look like greed is the primary motivator driving our villains (boring). But I’ll give it one more week.

Knight Flower (Epsiode 3-4) - Mood: C-
I’m surprised the show seems intent on pushing a romance between Yoon Hak and Yeon Sun given the realities of that time period, but alas, any possible excitement I felt from that was quickly extinguished by the palace politics and the reveal that of course it’s the father in law who’s the big baddie. Who honestly cares what happened 15 years ago? But that’s the story.

Marry My Husband (Episode 7-8) - Mood: D+
Although the show did jump a few steps with the proposal cliffhanger, I liked that Ji Won has finally waged war against Soo Min given that she had asked the latter to marry her husband ever since Episode 1. On the other hand, the show has 0 plan for the chef’s arc and I’m frankly not sure how there’s still 8 more episodes of plot. But we’ll see if the 2nd half can keep up.

I'm a bit uncomfortable with Sazal Mahamud's casting as a saudi (judging by his clothing) prince, when he is in fact Bangladeshi. They did the same to Anupam Tripathi (who's Indian) in King the Land. I get that they may have a limited number of foreign actors who speak Korean sufficiently well, but still, it's a bit on the nose to pick just any actor with roughly the right skin color. (Nothing against the actors - I like them both!)

I guess they also tend to cast any Caucasian actor as American when a good number of them are clearly not native English speakers. I actually often find myself cringing a bit at extended scenes with white actors in k-dramas, whether because of over-acting (e.g. stereotypical rude white guy) or awkward English dialogue written by non-native speakers.

My Korean is slowly progressing into intermediate territory, but I still watch with subtitles. However, they tend not to have subtitles for conversations in English, and with some Korean actors I have to switch to French subtitles in order to understand (e.g. Song Joon-ki).

I read the webtoon for Marry my Husband, and I think they'll either have to pad out the chef's original story line, or else we'll see a bit less of him in the coming episodes.

I rewatched Run On last week, and had completely forgotten how much I like it.

Respect different perspectives, but I my take is a bit different. Maybe cause I’ve completed the original webtoon for Marry my husband, so know that the chef is not a major player, don’t worry for him 😉 and the revenge will happen, and have more impact due to the buildup, especially with the great changes the drama has made, most webtoon readers agree too. So personally, I love how they are taking their sweet times to flush out the characters and growth more, after all it’s not about the ending, cause we know these trash will get payback, but the process and internal growth of our leads that matters most. It’s almost healing in the way the pacing it done, which is very refreshing in a world where shows try to be quick past to be sharp. Now that I’ve seen what the drama has done so far, surprising webtoon readers in good ways, I have a lot more faith in the drama team. Please have a good landing.

Live-ish Watches
My Demon: I didn’t think the last two episodes were as special as the first 14, but I’m not angry at this conclusion, so we’re calling it a draw. The real gift was the memes friends we made along the way.

Like Flowers in Sand: It’s been so long since my drama dance card was this clear! I started this on Sunday and I’ve watched through episode 10 now because I couldn’t stop. I’m waiting on ep 11 until the finale releases but it’s taking all my willpower. Last year I got to start the year with the blazing green flag of Park In-seong from Unlock My Boss, and this year I get to kick things off right with Kim Baek-du filling a similar niche. I don’t know when I’ve seen a more endearing ML, and if they can stick this landing, the drama will easily make my favorites list for the year. I can’t tell if I need to start watching competitive ssireum or if I’m just enamored with these characters. Is it both? What a gem of a show.

K-action Movie of the Week
Badland Hunters: Hahahahahaha!! Let me start by saying: my husband and I were totally entertained for the duration. All quotes have been lovingly stolen from him.
Overall impression: “I think we found the limit of what Ma Dong-seok can elevate.”
Plot: “Well, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end.”
Characterization: “I’ve never seen a villain with so much flop sweat in my life.”
But still: “I’m always down to watch Ma Dong-seok punch people 10 feet in the air. Always.”
And there you have it! The action sequences were great as usual, Jun did everything he was supposed to do except look like an 18 year old, MDS started things off right by killing an alligator with a serrated machete, everyone who was going to die made it Very Clear through their dialogue, and while I never need to watch this movie again, I have no regrets.

Samdal-ri
It wasn't as great (and deep) as I wanted it to be... and I wasn't fan of the sudden move (and success) of ALL of them to Seoul... and that Aziz Mansoo turned out to be rich. If anything, I wanted the opposite, that Chaebol Ex-husband would ditch his family and join Mansoo in the shop, I think they could be a nice duo. 🙂 I also wanted Eunjoo to crash more and somehow by her own doing, like reach the deadline of her work and show with NOTHING (or with mediocre photos), that her (terrible) work would speak for her (and would clearly show the truth). And yes, I could definitely do without Sangdo and his unrequited love. 🙄
That said (and there could be more 😆), I still enjoyed the show and I especially enjoyed watching Ji Changwook and Shin Hyesun acting together (and also Ji Changwook admiring Kim Mikyung after her speech to Sangte 🙂).
And there was Jeju, of course.

Marry My Husband
If Perfect Marriage Revenge was Crack on Speed, this is the polar opposite in a sense that I enjoy the most the silent looks and lingering moments (and I don't, gasp, fast forward!). I also think that all 4 leads are doing great job with their roles (and this is the first time I can't take my eyes off Na Inwoo). I just wish they would tone down a bit the wardrobe of PMY, it's sometimes distracting, and I occasionally even miss the old (but natural) Jiwon. 😅
I was surprised that the blue heart 💙 was revealed so early and I hope Jiwon will also discover soon Jihyeok's future death and gets him out of his current depression (and Noble Idiocy).

Unpredictable Family
I'm not yet caught up, but I reached the part when Hayeong recognises herself in Bio Mom and her obsession with separating our leads. The turning point is here and Hayeong is finally giving up, apologising to Eunseong... and actively trying to reconnect with our Detective. Unfortunately that's the only bright point currently as our leads are in misery because of their parents' past (and because of a scandal caused by their jealous colleagues).

I'm still watching Live Your Own Life and checked 2 episodes of cdrama Love Endures about 6 childhood friends meeting again after a long time. Planning to finish Demon and check Dr.Slump and maybe Cop&Chaebol.

I think it's just idiocy. They don't have a relationship for him to be backing out of.
She hasn't yet committed to him.

What he IS doing, though, is hanging around, still clearly caring about her--doting even--when he has no intention of committing.

So, yeah. Not noble idiocy to me. Worse.

4

Required fields are marked *

Well, for me he decides about their relationship without her. He decides they can't be together, because he is going to die in 10 years, WITHOUT telling her the truth. (If he did tell her, she could still choose to be with him and they could spend very happy 10 years together whatever would then happen afterwards.) So for me this is Noble Idiocy. But it could be that you and me have a different definition of what Noble Idiocy means. At least we communicate and so we are not Idiots, nor are we Noble about it, trying to reach some greater good... or are we??? 🤔

5

Of course! Human conversation is the ONLY thing--K-dramas, are you listening??

See, they don't have a committed relationship of any type...so he can't be making decisions for her about "them."

He's only making assumptions that he'll die in 10 years, too.

I guess what I am saying is that if every person who told you they liked you, and to whom you responded, "I'm not interested," or "I am already in a relationship," then chose not to pursue you any longer for whatever reason they might have--mystical death in 10 years, found someone else, discovered that you often chew ice and couldn't stand to be near you--and didn't tell you...that'd be fine, wouldn't it?

Per Aziz, that was so random and very weird. I guess the industry heard the criticism from folks about Arab portrayal and this was their weirdo answer.

Welcome to Samdal-Ri: All is well that ends well. This was a mostly pleasant watch for me. The characters were a little shallow, but overall, I had fun watching this.

Knight Flower: This was rather boring for me, so I dropped it. Until next time Honey Lee

My Demon: An epic slog, what a tedious drama, lol.

Maestra: I liked this drama so much, mostly for Lee Young Ae, who was spectacular in this. I would have loved this drama if not for the trying to normalize the antics and creepiness of Jung Jae. Otherwise, the acting in this drama was Top-notch.

Tell me you love me: This was also an all is well that ends well. A sweet drama, that needed more to be memorable. I will have pleasant memories of it though.

Marry My Husband: I don’t understand what is happening with the chef and Ji Hyuk. It is such a weird triangle. Also, unnecessary. The drama is also starting to meander.

Like Flowers in the Sand: I love this drama so.

My man is cupid: LOL, so stupid, but I finished it.

Between Him and Her: I will be dropping this soon, yeah.

Flex X Cop: It was exactly what I expected in a good way, so no complaints.

Doctor Slump: SOOOOOO excited for this.

LTNS: Pretty funny, I am on episode 3.

The Bequeathed: I only watched the first episode, so I look forward to the rest of it.

Captivating the King: I find the drama captivating. There is something “quiet” about it that I really like.

A Shop for Killers: On my list to start soon.

I thought I was the only one that Knight Flower didn't click for!! I watched the first two episodes, and Honey Lee is awesome, but everything else was very mid for me - I hoped the whole thing would be like the first five minutes. A gender-bender, time-slip The Fiery Priest, if you will. It seemed to be a more heavy-handed amalgam of some of the themes done better by Matchmakers and Bossam: Steal the Fate, but here, the emotions weren't landing for me. Maybe I'll come back to it when I'm feeling less complain-y, maybe I won't. 🤷‍♀️

You're not being complain-y just that The Matchmakers is going to make everything else look a little less by comparison. 😂 Your description of it being heavy handed is very apt and I guess its just too soon after MM to settle for anything else. Maybe when we're little more desperate during a drama slump we may find it more palatable. 🤷‍♀️

Live watches:
Looking forward to Dr Slump and hoping I will have new dramas to fill my empty week.

Between him and her
We continue to see the back story of the members of the friendship group; we see how Mr playboy came to be cynical and cold to the women he has one night stands with. The too good to be true boyfriend shows his true colours. Jealousy reigns with the male lead. The friends’ reaction to the male lead’s anger makes me wonder how a trait that is understandable in youth due to lack of emotion regulation skills is still such a worry now he is a big man. The main question for me was who filmed Sungok that night she was celebrating getting her design contract. Why was she so drunk she could barely stand? The last time that happened she woke up in a motel with a male acquaintance. This is another example of the behaviour associated with some teenager years well known for signs of poor impulse control. Has the leads’ 7 year relationship and remaining with a limited circle of friends from college prevented them from developing emotionally?

Completed

Welcome to Samdalri
I enjoyed most of this story, the friendships and rebuilding of self and relationships.

Dr Storks - Japanese
I really enjoyed both seasons; the stories raised some important points about the complications of childbirth, the implications of science saving very preterm babies and the reality of parents raising children with significant disabilities due to their early birth. The stories behind the staff in the hospital also covered issues like being in care, family loyalty, friendships and childlessness due to physical health conditions rather than choice.

Bingewatch corner:

Eunjoo’s room/Dear my room 2018
Watching for February’s Watch and Discuss K-drama club. A sweet friends to lovers, finding oneself drama. Second lead was the boss/friend of the male lead in My lovely liar. I didn’t recognise him he has grown a lot in the last 6 years.

Hide from the rain - Japanese

Webtoon corner:
Second lead syndrome

Book club:

The calligrapher’s daughter - Eugenia Kim
Covers the period of transition from the traditional ways to alternative lifestyles; religion, gender and class changes during the Japanese occupation of Korea. Told through the eyes of the daughter in a family as she grows up with a dad who pines for the Independence of Korea and a return to class and traditional roles and a mother who wishes her daughter to have full access to all the opportunities that education will bring.

Knight Flower: 8.0 I knew the petals were poison! (because of the preview at end end of ep 4)

LTNS: 7.5

My Demon: 6.0

Goryeo Kitan War: 5.0 Office palace politics with the king unconscious with a contrived illness for most of ep 19 and doctors trying to gin up drama by saying he might not live. If that's the best they can do, just let the Khitans take over. Give them a chance to do better.

Captivating the King: 7.5 Starts as My Dearest 2.0 but with more baduk & cross-dressing and hopefully less damnesia and perhaps less tragedy (?)

Love Song for Illusion: 4.5 Sorry, getting really tired of the characters with different personalities, especially that sorcerer. Did they set it in a fictional kingdom out of fear that depicting a real Joseon king as having those mental issues would get them Joseon Exorcised?
At least the the FL is pretty. I could say that about most kdramas, but it's not a good sign when I have to say it in order to find anything good to say at all.

A Shop for Killers: 8.5 I'm more eager to rewatch this one than to watch new episodes of other shows. Enjoying the bits of Chinese being spoken -- all my Chinese classes and years in Taiwan are paying off :) Of course, their excursion to Jirisan went about as smoothly as you'd expect, considering that other show.

Flex x Cop: 7.0 Silly but watchable. The rich guy antics could get old fast.

About Goryeo-Khitan War, that was surely inevitable and predictable. I just skipped to the end of the episode and I found myself right where young King woke up.

The Queen move though...that was brilliant.

I'm quite surprised that the king with food intentions marrying into a family empowers the family in some sort but the son of a family entering into a marriage with, and becoming a royal relative means truncating the son's prospects at moving up the social ranks.

LIKE FLOWERS IN THE SAND—(ep 10) Still in love! Trying to decide whether to wait to watch the final two episodes together or just gobble up episode 11. My fellow viewers, do you have advice?

THE HOPE(CH)—I could write an essay on how well done this was. I did not want to leave even though we were given closure.

MY MAN IS CUPID (ep 13)—I continued watching for Jang Dong Yoon but I am finding I am enjoying this once I got over the bumpy tonal shifts and I just ff through the filler. Although I care more about the Joseon story and I think JDY has better romantic chemistry with the actress who plays the past life court lady.

REBORN (CH)—A melancholy crime drama that follows a police officer who lost his memory in a gunfight and is suffering PTSD. The novel part is that no one—including him and us—are sure if he was a dirty cop who set up the incident in the first place.

AN ANCIENT LOVE SONG (CH)—Beautiful drama that plays with time, but it is also hard to watch for me because you know going in that this is not a happy ending (unless there is a big twist).

OH NO, HERE COMES TROUBLE! (TW) —only one episode in and I can’t wait to continue. It was a perfect premiere episode for me and I lap up the crazy blend of poignant drama, supernatural horror and comedy. It will fill the hole that I AM NOBODY left, I think.

THEY KISS AGAIN (TW)—nostalgic and fun to rewatch. The cast chemistry is natural, the cinematography is a little clunky in a good, old drama (2007) way, and the story is not demanding.

OTHERWISE

IU’s LOVE WINS ALL MV (with Kim Taehyung)—this music video is as good as (and better) than many dramas. In a short 5 minutes I fell for the characters, wanted them to win, and my heart was devastated. It is emotionally gripping, beautifully grim and desperate, and wonderfully acted. IU and V are tremendous as actors, especially considering the constraints of the shoot (you know if you have seen it). On the singing side, I mean it’s IU. I could listen to her sing recipes.

Highly recommend to anyone who loves a good story and doesn’t mind having a box of tissues ready.

MAGE AGAIN—A surprising webtoon and I want to give a standing ovation to the artist and author who put the BIG twist IN PLAIN VIEW.

ELECEED—an unwilling master takes a naive but supremely talented apprentice. Done many times, right? The genius is the characters and the expressive art. I have laughed out loud reading it just for the expressions. No spoilers, but cat lovers would enjoy this one.

In cdramland one is never quite certain when a drama will get that final license and ok to air but I am definitely following Zhang Ruo Yun to JOL 2 and JUDGE DEE. JUDGE DEE may be up sooner rather than later.

According to MyDramaLand, CELEBRATED CASES OF JUDGE DEE (ZRY is not cast as Judge Dee but Zhou Yi Wei is) will be 32 episodes on Youku. Possibly JUDGE DEE may be made available subbed on Youku’s Youtube channel I guess we will have to wait and see.

As an aside, during THE HOPE’s airing I did take the plunge and subscribe to Youku’s international app (for $35 during a half off sale lol). I have it on my iPad. I watched the JUDGE DEE trailer and it looks really good.

Subtitling report. For awhile I watched 2 subbed cdramas on Yotube. Although I enjoyed both, the subtitles on 1 left a lot to be desired. On Youtube the subtitling of Youku’s THE HOPE was fine. The subtitling of Tencent’s contemporary cops/crime/mystery THE LONG SEASON (2023) was poor and a struggle for me. The story and performance were so good and interesting that I persevered for the 12 episodes but it was disappointing to see such poor subtitling by Tencent. To be fair I have watched only that one Tencent drama on Youtube. I can’t comment on the subtitling of the other Tencent dramas available on Youtube.
I like that so far both Youku and Tencent are making some of their dramas available free on Youtube.
Of course I had to shell out and go Youtube Premium to avoid the annoying ads.

Shop for Killers: What a day Jian is having! 😱 Hopefully Uncle's lessons will help her survive the latest plot twist. The show continues to use flashbacks masterfully. And LDW is amazing -- this might be my favorite role of his.

Flex x Cop: It's not easy being the mother of a drama ML. Chances are you'll die young and tragically in order to provide your son with his required inner trauma. 🥹 I'm not sold on the rogue man-child chaebol after the first episode, but perhaps things will improve now that the main characters are ostensibly working together. However -- is this going to be yet another show where the FL has to spur the ML to finally grow up? 🙄

Knight Flower: Drunk Su ho with a crush is pretty darn cute. ☺️ The music director for this show must be having a blast. The instrumental selections help lighten the mood when the virtuous woman business gets too dark. Gat tip to the Beanies who correctly predicted the petals were poisonous! ☠️ 🌸

Welcome to Samdal-ri: Finished better than it started, which not every drama can say. From a glass-half-full perspective, it delivered on the healing for multiple characters and had a believable friends/lovers rekindled romance. With this cast and setting, though, it could have been outstanding with a more focused script.

I Am Nobody: So compelling it wreaked havoc on my drama-watching schedule. It's irreverent and heartwarming all at once. The modern version of the wuxia young masters tournament was hugely entertaining. Halfway through and I've got no idea where the story will go next but am enjoying the ride.

My Boss: An addictive romcom thanks to a host of appealing characters -- from the OTP to their coworkers to, yes, their parents. His mom is hilarious and is such a shipper. Yes, there are some bad guys with the typical toxic traits, but they'll help bring the couples together before meeting their downfall.

WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI (Ep 15-16) The Saga of the Alcoholic Sisters turned into a slog. Samdal, the lead, mainly followed repetitive juvenile behavior of others until the forced happy ending was given to just about everyone. The other sisters may or may not found their end game. For a rom-com it was very little rom and weak com. It was an average drama with a weak script.

LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE (Ep 34-35) The show continues to roll along with gigantic factual and practical nonsense to the point of aggravation. But the Drama Hangout/Highlights is nice.

MY HAPPY ENDING- not sure how I feel about FL hit with convinent amnesia to take her out her own story for the interesting parts to be handled by her husband (who is currebtly speed running his redemption arc after speed running the ruin of his marrige) and the infatuated white knight who just might be a creepy stalker . What I am watching:

_ Love song for illusion (7/16). As I said before, this is not a very good drama but for some reason I find myself thinking a lot about it while I'm waiting for new episodes. I'm really interested in what's going to happen next. I love the OST too.

_ My Happy Ending (8/16). This is a surprisingly good show imo. Good acting, editing, script, OST... I have watched these eight episodes in a few days this week.

_ C-drama A Journey to love (20/40). Episode 16 was one of the best so far. The young actress who plays the Princess is awesome.

What I have finished:

_ J-drama Tsuiraku JK to Haijin Kyoshi. This drama is weird! But the ML is so cute. While the FL is too deadpan and I don't understand their dry humour... This has been my first j-drama and I find it was like a silly anime in many ways. I couldn't take it seriously, but it was an easy watch. And the intro song is so catchy!

Western shows:

_ All the creatures great and small Season 1. I liked it, but as it happens in many Western series, the main couple's feelings are undeveloped.

_ As we see it. A lovely series full of endearing characters. Unfortunately, it won't see a second season. I have enjoyed it a lot and it's sad to say goodbye.

Love Song for Illusion The MLs characters are so inconsistent that it makes the story hard to follow...

Marry My Husband Inconsistency is the word of the week, how she can be scared that Min-Hwan will kill her if she broke up with him but not drowning because it's not like she died... So nothing happened during these 10 years that she can be killed now? The ML is boring... He was drinking because he couldn't save her, now because he can't save himself? Could he just let the poor chief alone?

Like Flowers in Sand I wished they gave us more scenes of the gang and sooner. It's just so fun to watch them together.

Between Him and Her I didn't watch the last episode yet.

Doctor Slump I'm really excited to watch it!

Knight Flower After the weird worm in Our Blooming Youth, we got petals!

Flex x Cop It was really a very drama-esque way to make him join the Police. 😅

Captivating the King JJS is really good in this role. I'm excited to see him as King.

A Shop for Killers I don't understand how the FL wasn't suspicious about her uncle, he was super weird!

LTNS I followed my rule of 4 episodes and I can't stand any character. I don't need to start every episode by a sex scene to understand they're lovers neither.

My Man is Cupid I understand why they didn't find a channel for this drama...

I agree with you about Marry My Husband. I love how idea of how the consequences ain't changing despite going back 10 years. Some things have to happen irregardless of any attempt to bypass it.

My first impulse would be to break up with Min-hwan. I don't know how that doesn't make sense to Ji-won. Worrying about what happens as a result is like trying to curate things as it were in the original timeline. If she's going that route, before we know it she'll find herself winded into a bind if no wound for wound exists.

Ji-won should extricate herself from situations that ain't worth it and insert herself into situations that do. Worry about the effects what she extricates from ain't doing her any good.
So do hope for the love of me that she has something planned out for accepting things to play out as they did in the original timeline.

I am getting more and more uneasy about MARRY MY HUSBAND mainly because of how the time travelling rules are set up. Ji-won cannot simply break away from her enemies, her only way to solve the relationship issue is through manipulation which I find highly problematic. This reminds me of the ML in STRANGERS AGAIN who shied away from addressing the problems in his relationship and used a lie instead to manipulate his wife into a divorce. These are very red flags. The characters are still entertaining to watch, but there is a good chance I will drop it.

Wasn't prepared for only one episode of FLOWERS IN SAND, but I am now sure I knew who the killer is all along. I will miss the drama after next week and especially the childhood scenes. These children are so natural and believable.

The editing in SHOP FOR KILLERS is very well done. Past and present scenes reveal the story by and by and slowly, in a good way.

I hope Jo Yeo-Hwa will serve her MiL the Virtuous woman Book to eat at the end of the drama! I won't rule out that MiL herself will end up as a widow, she might then not like to book so much anymore. As suspected, the flower petals were not just decorative.

Will continue with CAPTIVATING THE KING. Maybe Prince Lee-In has noticed that he was playing Baduk against a girl already, but can keep a secret.

Lots of new dramas to watch, but most at the weekend! This sucks.

Interesting, so it seems people are not understanding or buying the time travel rule, and thus don’t understand why Ji-won has to manipulate the trash humans into marrying each other instead of breaking up. From our understanding, which the drama made more clear than webtoon, is that after JW came back to the past, the first thing she did, was breaking up MH but he turned very violent, which after years of abuse and being murdered by them, she is understandably traumatized by what he might do if she tried that again. They also established that if she tried to avoid the situation, like take her self out of these bad situations, she will still get the bad situation somehow in different ways or it will happen to others, innocent people.

So the rule, at least what they discovered so far, is yes you can’t avoid your fate, you can only transfer it to others whether you like it or not

So this rule should clear the conscience of our leads to go and pair up these two, but what I love about Ji-won is she still had a slimmer of hope that they would not turn out to be such awful humans, which they reveal even more in this new timeline. Ji Won was still emotionally impacted by their betrayal and loss of these shitty but still long relationships, bad and good times, because she is a decent human been.

This show basically forced our lead to not take the high road, which so is refreshing. Because most people have regrets to how they felt or didn’t respond to some protractors or their pain and wished they could have done somethings differently, instead of taking the high road or the least conflict or work option.

As for our male lead JH, knowing his fate can’t be blamed on others, he does not want to sacrifice another life for him, so he believes he’ll be domed. This does differ from the original but I have a lot more faith In the drama team now, after seeing all the great changes from the webtoon, so I have faith in the ending. I’m happy to come a long with the ride and watch our leads heal, learn and grow to love again! Wohoooo

d. Knight Flower: The drama continues to deliver with Honey Lee as the FL...and it reaches 11%.

Marry My Husband💙(8/16): Less gushing about the line delivery this week. With emphasis on less, there is still plenty going around!🤗This week he is adding eyes to the mix, switching between yearning and utter heartbreaking disbelief whenever our FL degrades herself.😳What I do not like are his noble idiocy restaurant visits. Kang Ji-Won told him she wanted to be his confidante and she can pick out her future partner by herself. Also, he is an unpleasant customer with his barbs and unclear comments. I get why Eun-Ho is not too happy to see him return. Anyway, I will let it slide for now. Clearly the show is building up growth for Ji-Hyuk, a bromance(-in law) for our gents and a romance for our chef, right?!😤

Knight Flower🥷(5/12): Aigoo Amogae!🙄Now you outrank your original mistress, NokSoo married into your family and your monk became the king. Alas, your calm delivery (*yup, delivery. again. I need help.*) does not bring spring back to Ikwhari!😔(I had to Beanies, this is practically a Rebel Reunion!) Our officer also has a gentle voice and delivery (*despair*) and is quite devoted to his job. Devotion runs in the family, his hyung also knows no middle ground. He is either completely done or stirring the palace drama pot!🤭For the OST lovers among you: Blade by YoungJi is my new anthem.😎

Live Watch:

Captivating the king/Sejak I love the Korean name. Jo Jong Suk is terrific as the hurting crown prince (his poetry scene is what brillant acting is made of). Shin Se Kyung is not bad, if I may say so. I am just glad they took the drama out of the war quickly. But I wonder how the whole Baduk thing is going to play out. I dont find that very interesting , maybe because I don't understand the game? Plus the characters are not as convincing. To be honest, My Dearest is shadowing heavy on it. Let's see.
Flex Cop I signed up for some laughs and got a few. The premise is funny though I wonder if it has enough to go on for an entire series. Ahn Bo Hyun for some reason never sticks to me as a lead. I am always expecting someone else to come in....well...I don't know. I lied the first episode though.

Finished
The Matchmakers May I say I absolutely loved the series? This show outdid itself in three things:
Showing millions of different kinds of relationships (the casting team did some real matchmaking here)
Throwing in some nice laughs, mystery, crime, social apathy, court politics and stitch it all together flawlessly without changing the tone of the series. Not many K-dramas can say that.
Present a flawless finish: Not many K-dramas can say that either.

Eagerly waiting:
Doctor Slump bated breath. I am hoping this one will bring the entire DB community together. The trailers are a hoot and if it delivers what it promises, the start of 2024 will bring Kdramas out of slump right off the bat.

Ok hot take- I started out episodes 1-2 seeing what a few others had mentioned about CtK and MD being similar- the obvious premise parallels and the king slowly gone mad. But I then see all the differences: JJS as the prince/king being totally different than NGM as the devil may care merchant. SO much going on there. And the descent in ep 3-4 from a classic story of the girl who loved the prince and the prince who had unwavering loyalty to the throne..into the story of the woman who wants revenge (or at least closure in the form of teaching him a lesson) and the man who's lost himself after the loss of his brother. So good.

My Dearest shined best as a drama highlighting the realities of war and the beauty of the people willing to work to survive through it. Those characteristics as portrayed by our leads there contributed to the absolute fervor of their love story. I think it's a part of why the second half didn't do so well- it transitioned to a political drama instead of a war drama.

CtK on the other hand has gone all in as an introspective piece on the Prince- he has layers upon layers to dig through it seems like. Does he want the throne or not? Was he always truly loyal to his brother or did he resent him? Is he a man who acts on principle or does he let himself be led by his emotions? I look forward to seeing more of JJS performance and how Mong Woo works to captivate him and perhaps bring out the best in him.

One Dollar Lawyer

The first 9 episodes of this show were so good. The present timeline was extremely old fashioned but in a good way. Every scene reminded me of old lawyer firm show Partner which has been one of my favorite shows for decades. Then it switched to the flashback timeline, which was tropey, cheesy, and heartbreaking all at the same time still in a good way. Beautifully showcasing Namgoong Min's acting range. Then episode 10 happened and everything just... imploded?? It was like they didn't have a writer anymore. They just went around repeating nonsensical dialogues and gestures like slapstick comedy shows. Silly nonsensical scenes that had nothing to do with the story. It was so weird! The last 3 episodes were bad. Very bad. Their only saving grace was one or two scenes where we see Namgoong Min showing a range of intense emotions and reactions in the span of a few seconds. Those were truly gorgeous.

He was really really good. In the initial episodes I kept thinking why is he acting like a cosplay. Even in Chief Kim he was more natural. Why does it feel like he is trying to copy Chief Kim and Doctor Who and I don't know who else! And then the flashback happened and it all made sense. And then he used both his masks in the span of seconds and my jaw dropped. He was truly amazing. But the writing! What happened to the writer after ep 9??

WATCHING AND SAVORING:
LIKE FLOWERS IN THE SAND: The preemption of the final episode “forced” me to rewatch the eariler episodes. On rewatch, it rewarded me with a richness of detail and heart that I missed even though I was captivated from the beginning. The strengths of this show are many: great acting from the entire cast; interesting relationships between different characters; thrilling sirreum shots, humor and heart. But I think the real magic of this show is that at its core is a seemingly simple character, Baek Du, whose actions and words are not tricky or clever, but are genuine and all heart with no sophisticated facade. That’s a hard character to portray without it seeming silly (once again, cannot praise JDY enough for his acting), let alone have seem real. Baek Du is Forrest Gump without the aw shucks cheese. The purity of heart is both adorable (as Du Sik says) and lovable because we often long to shed the adult facades in which we cloak ourselves in our attempts to be grown up and sophisticated, and when we see someone who can just show you himself without that facade, it’s mad respect and love. The show and JDY get Baek Du right: pure and lovable, and as Jin Su’s mom observes, it’s hard not to like him.

ALSO WATCHING:
KNIGHT FLOWER: The two mains’ interactions are great, smart without any teenagery weirdness which has been written for many adult characters in dramas recently. I also am liking the juxtaposition of the moral questions of right and wrong vs. the rules of decorum. How you get out of a palaquin should not matter more than whether old woman is injured, people have enough to eat or children are being abducted.

WHEN I FLY TOWARDS YOU: This is how you show young love. So sweet and cute without tipping over the saccarine edge.

What an amazing take on the character of Baek-du! Thank you so much for this! His strength-in-vulnerability is just so amazing. Your choice of the word 'respect' is just right for me too.

Marry My Husband. This was the first time I watched the drama and I was just confused alot haha. I was confused about the ages and timeline. I just couldn't wrap my head around Ji Won working at the company and being with Min Hwan for 17 freaking years. It really hurts my heart that she genuinely could've been in great friendships and relationships with other people but Su Min & Min Hwan just destroyed her and for what?! It's anger inducing and hard to watch (for me). I was also confused by the capture the flag outcome. And I guess the team leader knows about Su Min and Min Hwan's hookup? Sidenote: the fact that either Min Hwan or both of them sounds like elks mating haha. It's just a weird/funny contrast to me how Min Hwan thinks he's this stud and actually he's just a lame who sounds like an elk. I think seeing the mistreatment in live action hits differently and that makes Ji Won's "revenge"/ schemes against those who mistreated her, especially Su Min and Min Hwan, feel more earned and satisfying. There are some webtoon moments that I don't know if it will happen but I'm looking forward to.

Love Song for Illusion. It's interesting; I can see the flaws and yet I'm still obsessed with the show haha. There's been many times, such as the scenes with Hyun and Gyera, where I'm like if only they would do more with them and less of the palace scheming. I like their dynamic. It's cute seeing Hyun's different sides such as his jealousy, self consciousness, and how he clearly is having his first crush. It's sweet haha

Knight Flower. Sigh, it's always hard watching how women are just so disposable. "You should be an example for all widows by killing yourself because without your beloved husband (even if you've never even met him) life is meaningless" 😒🙄😮‍💨😬🤮
But at least watching Yeo Hwa makes things easier haha
She is just so fun and I love her dynamic with Soo Ho and Yeon Seon. If only Soo Ho and Yeon Seon could commiserate about her together haha
I wonder how the death of Soo Ho's family, the former king, and Yeo Hwa's brother's disappearance are connected. Pretty certain Yeo Hwa's father in law is responsible for it but the how is the real mystery to me. Also I wonder if Yeo Hwa's brother is hiding or dead.

A Journey to Love: Why yes, through 28 episodes, this is exactly the flavor of drama crack that I was looking for! I absolutely adore both leads (characters and actors), as well as the whole misfit genius Scooby gang around them. Also, how do I bulk order more male leads whose hyper-competence is directly linked to their emotional intelligence? Bonus points if they're played by actors who can deliver the same level of warmth and vulnerability as Liu Yuning. And props to the screenwriter for following up A Dream of Splendor with yet another show that is so attuned to exactly how gender and power dynamics intertwine.

It's a storytelling thing largely - he is indeed VERY perfect, so much that there was very little room for an inner conflict and/or character development. Imo both writer and actor did a truly fantastic job by fleshing him out as much as possible regardless, but logically I can see WHY people would prefer someone more obviously dynamic and relatable. I do think it was one of the biggest strengths of the drama - to pull off such a tricky ML archetype successfully.

Plus a lot of ladies simply find moody bad boys hotter lol. Luckily for them LYN's next few roles look like a far cry from mature and emotionally intelligent))) And luckily for US he can do both^^

Liu Yu Ning was terrific in AJTL and also my first LYN drama. (Avenue X in her extended AJLT review described some of the nasty/vicious online attacks LYN was subjected to in China whike AJTL aired. Disgraceful.)
Anyway over at MDL LYN has 7 upcoming projects but I am gathering that some may already have been finished and are sitting on a shelf waiting to get the license to air. I think I might prefer to carry on with LYN’s actual post AJTL work.

4

@marcusnyc20 let me correct your info a bit - it's 4 dramas in post-production, 1 one of which (THE PRISONER OF BEAUTY) may or may not be shelved forever due to FL's tax issues (but is rumored to drop without fanfare in February - stay tuned). Other 3 are supposed to air someday, possibly all this year. Plus he's currently filming one. That makes it 5. Plenty to choose from if you're not into going backwards with his filmography.

Other 2 - BLOCKING THE SKY and A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM - are just unconfirmed for now rumors (btw I did a break down on the latter's novel below if you wanna know the premise). Actually there should be 6 of them or so, not 2 - he's quite in demand after AJTL.

3

@bong-soo This is also my first time watching LYN in something, but I'd be glad to see him again on my screen any time - there is a raw, emotional honesty in his acting work that's often missing from the performances of more experienced actors who've learned how to coast on "technique".

6

I should have been a moody bad boy when I was younger.

0

As someone who is really not into cold bad boy types whose horrible treatment of others (usually women) is justified by all the "trauma" they've experienced, I'll take emotional maturity any day of the week. And for me, the character is compelling because that maturity feels hard won through a lot of really rough life experiences, not because he was just magically born that way.

As an action-adventure wuxia fangirl, "A Journey to Love" is a perfect/imperfect drama that left a lasting impression on me in 2023. I miss our Liudao Hall gang, He Lan Dou, our young princess, and her amazing transformation, and Ruyi Jie, my fave assassins.
When Liu Yuning sang the show's ost on New Year's Eve and cried, it brought tears to my eyes. Out of the 51 osts he sang for different dramas last year, "Offer" will always hold a special place in my heart because of this drama and its memorable characters.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQXp7TzL9U4&ab_channel=MD_%E6%AA%B8%E6%AA%AC%E6%B3%A1%E8%8A%99
I loved the intro - Liudao Hall, Ning Yuanzhou! It's hard to move on from Boss Ning. Lol

Even though this drama was a work of fiction, I appreciated how the characters acted and behaved according to their roles. Even Chief Du didn't forget how to use a bow and arrow because it was part of the state exam. I have noticed that in many sageuk dramas, ministers are portrayed as bookworm scholars who don't know how to use weapons to fight.

I really enjoy this writer's work, but I feel that the endings of her dramas are rushed. Perhaps this is more on the director than the writer.

The forty episode cap has proven to be a real disaster. It seems to have been imposed arbitrarily for political reasons.

3

Arbitrary SARFT rules really are the worst, especially ones that don't seem to have any compelling reason to exist.

3

@oldawyer, @wonhwa I believe it was officially justified by "viewers complaints about commercially overstretched filler-heavy long shows" (c). Complaints thing was real btw, but that's obviously not the only - or main - reason here. More like a government cracking down on entertainment industry making too much money out of thin air and not being very eager to share. Same with all those tax evasion celeb cancellations lately.

6

I do support the 40 episode cap. Cdramas are too long, with many episodes and they drop new dramas every week. It was hard to follow even the interesting ones. I think a story can be told very well in 40 episodes.

1

@kngangbam you're in the winning team then. Personally I will never support forced censorship and oppression of an art as a whole just because it may fit my narrative once in a while.

0

I loved A Dream of Splendour but didn't finish because the ending was supposedly not very satisfactory. Watching AJTL but again have heard that the ending has some issues. Wondering whether I should keep watching or not.

I can't comment on AJTL's ending since I haven't finished it yet, but I actually liked A Dream of Splendor's ending - some of the plot logistics of how they got there were clunky, but it was lovely to see a show where the female characters took matters into their own hands and rescued themselves without waiting around for men to swoop in and save them.

4

AJTL ending is logical and expected in this kind of story. Viewers simply wished for a different one against their better judgement))) Plus it felt kinda rushed due to editing issues in the last part, obviously caused by episode cap. If that is absolutely not for you and you wanna finish the show in high spirits, stop at Ep34.
