News bites: January 18, 2024

  • Netflix announced that Two Women (previously Eunjoong and Sang-yeon) has entered production, bringing us a story of the ups and downs of friendship with Kim Go-eun (Little Women) and Park Ji-hyun (Flex x Cop). Also starring Kim Gun-woo (The Glory), the series has PD Jo Young-min (The Interest of Love, Do You Like Brahms) at the helm, with scripts by Song Hye-jin (Hundred Million Stars From the Sky). [News1]

  • Speaking of the busy Kim Go-eun, she’s also the latest to be courted for The Price of Confession, which Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes) turned down. Jeon Do-yeon (Crash Course in Romance), on the other hand, is still reviewing the offer and if she accepts, she may be reuniting with Kim Go-eun, having worked together previously on the film Memories of the Sword. [News1]
  • Nighttime Photo Studio has been slotted on ENA’s schedule to release in March, with Joo-won (Stealer: The Treasure Keeper) as the owner of said ~mysterious~ studio, which is only open to the dead. Working together with Kwon Nara (Bulgasal: Immortal Souls), Yoo In-soo (Death’s Game), and Eum Moon-seok (Good Job), production for the fantasy is being led by PD Song Hyun-wook (The Golden Spoon, The King’s Affection) and writer Kim Yi-rang. [News1]

Clockwise: Joo-won, Kwon Nara, Eum Moon-seok, Yoo In-soo

  • LG’s U+ Mobile TV is working on a new mystery-horror called Tarot, lining up an ensemble cast with Jo Yeo-jung (Behind Every Star), Park Ha-sun (The Veil), Go Kyu-pil (Song of the Bandits), and Seo Ji-hoon (My Lovely Liar) among other talents. Bringing together seven different stories in an omnibus style, the series is currently filming with directing by PD Choi Byung-gil and Kyung Min-sun writing. [News1]
  • Jeon So-ni (Our Blooming Youth) has been added to the cast of Melo Movie, reportedly joining Park Bo-young (Daily Dose of Sunshine), Choi Woo-shik (Our Beloved Summer), and Jun (a.k.a. Lee Jun-young) (May I Help You) in the lineup. Production is still in the early stages, with Lee Na-eun (Our Beloved Summer) penning the scripts. [Star News]
  • In the meantime, the first script reading stills have come out for KBS’s upcoming crime-thriller Let’s Get Grabbed by the Collar, headlined by Kim Haneul (Kill Heel), Yeon Woo-jin (Daily Dose of Sunshine), and Jang Seung-jo (Death’s Game). The web novel adaptation is gearing up for a March premiere, slated to air in the Monday-Tuesday slot, following Love Song for Illusion. [Sports Donga]

1.) From Little Women to Two Women... That's an unlikely coincidence.

2.) Wow! Kim Ji-won opted out!
Whenever The Price of Confession airs, it better be worth the prices of the cast changes.

3.) Ghost stories are a no-no for me. But I really like the cast they put up here. And it's nice to see Kwon Nara again since Secret Royal Inspector.

6.) It's nice to see so many lovely faces in supporting roles.

I am picturing it being in the style of Hi, Bye Mama! or Ghost doctor did you watch either of them?

Ghost Doctor? No. Hi, Bye Mama!? I'm thinking about watching it for the first time one of these days.

I hope it is like Hotel Del Luna x May I Help You, and not the horrific ghost ghost stories.

I didn’t watch those two because I thought they would be scary so if you can handle them you won’t have any issues with the two dramas I mentioned. They are more sad stories with fun elements. The ghosts are not scary there are a couple of characters that are on the creepy side but they have few scenes which is why i can watch them. The ghost of the minister from Goblin is way scarier to me.

I actually almost always love dramas with ghosts (Ghost Doctor, From Now on Showtime, Bring It on Ghost, etc - only Delivery Man or whatever broke that trend) so I'm pretty excited for this one.

-It would be great to see Kim Go-eun and Jeon Do-yeon reunite, as they have worked together in "Memories of the Sword." However, this show show seems to struggle with keeping actors and PDs.
-I'm happy to see Joo-won back!
-I like seeing a heavier drama in the M/T time slot. Hopefully, double-digit ratings will return to this time slot.

1. Not mentioned here: heavy melo, terminal illness, angsty frenemies. Looking forward to skipping this one.

2. This is the most snake-bitten project I've ever heard of. Whoever is trying to produce/promote it seems to be pulling lead actress names out of a hat now.

3. Joo Won! Yay! He can bring some spark to the most lackluster premise.

Yeah, I hope that #1 is good for the sake of the Beanies who watch, but for me if it turns out not to be boring it will probably be triggering. I’ll pass also.

Maybe if they turn number 2 into "The Nighttime Price of Confession" they could get use animated ghosts as lead actresses.

Oh gosh, sounds heavy but similar to both the drama and film I mentioned.

I'm rooting for KBS to break the M/T curse. It's been too long.

What I like about the No. 6 group photo is that with a couple possible exceptions in the back all the cast seems to be of a certain age.
Jang Seung-jo is trying to fake us out looking around 30 but he is now (at 42) part of a group of terrific 40 ish actors like Kim Nam-gil, Park Hae-jin and Lee Sang-yeob to name a few.

Oooh, if I could follow my Stealer community watch with more Joo-won, that would be amazing! Plus, Nighttime Photo Studio sounds great so far, so I’ll definitely look out for more soon! I hope they use Yoo In-soo well and don’t make him a petty villain or suuuper annoying. He’s fine at those, but I miss Park Dang-gu.

In-soo is my favorite of all, so I bookmark anything significant. From the Soompi announcement:

"Yoo In Soo, who starred in hit dramas “All of Us Are Dead,” “Alchemy of Souls,” and “The Good Bad Mother,” will be playing the role of Assistant Manager Go who is the photo studio’s customer sales representative. Assistant Manager Go departed the world without having ever dated in his lifetime, raising anticipation for his backstory."

From other articles, it looks like he and Eum Moon Suk are ghost staff members of the studio and will provide a heavy dose of comedy.

This drama has been on my watchlist since the 1st announcement last summer and Joo Won is simply icing on the cake.

3. I'm intrigued by Nighttime Photo Studio.
5. Personally I like Jeon So-Nee, and I'm watching this drama anyway, so... win-win.
6. Great cast, but as with Flex X Cop, I'm not sure I'm interested in the story. We'll see.

None of these stories really grabs my interest. But there is no law saying that everything in Kdrama land has to. There will be other shows.

Two women, Price of confession and Melo movie are on the long list. I wonder if Two women will be an extended version of the film Soulmate or the younger years of the Dear my friends crew.

1) It sounds a lot like Soulmate. I like the casting and the production team, so why not!

2) I wonder if they shouldn't keep for them their casting news, because it doesn't sound very good that so many actressed turned it down.

3) I'm not of big fan of any actors, they're not bad, but I think I dropped their last dramas. I just hope that Yoo In-soo won't typecasted because I barely beared him in The Uncanny Counters 2 episodes before I dropped it.

4) Not a fan of mystery-horror genre. Maybe it will depend of each story. I can make an effort for Seo Ji-hoon.

5) Kim Jae-Wook was announced for this drama too. The casting is strong! But in Our Beloved Summer, the supporting cast didn't have a lot to do... So I hope they won't be underused.

6) I love the casting!

I would like to see TAROT but it being a mobile TV show I doubt it will be licensed overseas.

In 2018, LG’s U+ Mobile TV teamed up with Netflix Korea to show its content. In 2021 it teamed up with Disney Korea. I don't know if those deals still exist or it was just for the Korean market.

1. Normally, a drama centring on two women and their friendship would be catnip for me. However, a cursory look at the comments informed me there is terminal illness involved, so it's a pass for me (for now). Not to mention whatever love triangle nonsense that inevitably comes with only one leading man.

2. At this point, I want Jeon Do-yeon to walk away from this project as well. Everything about this production so far has been a messy clusterfuck.

3. God, when will Yoo In-soo get the lead role an actor of his immense talent and charisma deserves? Also yay Joo-won! Sadly, I'm not very sold on Kwon Nara as the FL.

4. More omnibuses!! Loving the cast. Just wish it wasn't on some obscure c-list streaming service.

5. Innnnteresting. I like the actors and the writer so I'm sold.

6. Aww, kinda wish Jang Seung-jo was the male lead here. I have absolutely nothing against Yeon Woo-jin (he's a great actor with a versatile filmography), I just want to see the man be a proper romantic leading man without terms and conditions applied. Of course, I'm only assuming their roles based on the billing here.

#5 Our Beloved Summer PD, Bo Young, Jeon So-Ni and Choi Woo Shik - I am sold.

I adore Jeon So Ni. The woman has strong histronics and an impeccable comic timing and is aboslutely stunning. Can't wait.
