Marry My Husband: Episodes 7-8

A change of environment provides the impetus for significant progress, upending relationship dynamics and spurring candid honesty. Our heroine may have taken several steps closer to her goal, but the path to get there turns out to be thornier than she’d expected.

EPISODES 7-8

Through a brief glimpse of the past, we see how our hero traveled back in time. After placing Ji-won’s ashes in the columbarium, Ji-hyuk’s car had broken down. The grieving, rain-soaked Ji-hyuk was then picked up by a timely taxi driver, who’d clocked Ji-hyuk’s regret and asked whether he’d make the most of a second chance. When Ji-hyuk responds in the affirmative, that’s all the reassurance Dad needs.

In the present, Ji-won catches Ji-hyuk up to speed on the tragic events of her original timeline. Afterwards, they head back to Ji-hyuk’s apartment, where his cat takes an immediate liking to Ji-won (and vice versa). As she explains the principle of equivalent exchange that governs her second chance at life, Ji-hyuk comes to the realization that two people will have to die in their places, but he doesn’t tell Ji-won about his own demise.

There’s a new arrival in the office to fill the absence that the nasty executive left behind, and it’s LEE SEOK-JOON (Ha Do-kwon), who also happens to be the right-hand man of Ji-hyuk’s chairman dad. Seok-joon warns that he’ll raise an HR issue out of the fact that Ji-hyuk took Ji-won home to his apartment the previous night, leaving Ji-hyuk no other choice but to appoint Joo-ran as the meal kit project leader. Still, he keeps Ji-won in the loop with regards to Seok-joon’s interference.

It’s time for the company’s biannual team-building workshop, which sends our marketing team on an outdoor camping trip. The main event is a flag hunt to determine the sleeping arrangements, ranging from a camper trailer to a sleeping bag.

In contrast to Soo-min, who constantly sweet-talks others into doing the heavy lifting for her, Ji-won is determined to rely on her own merit to earn what she deserves. Just as Ji-hyuk has faith in her competence, she wants to live up to her own potential. All she asks from Ji-hyuk is for him to be her listening ear — the one person she can be fully honest with about her struggles.

In response, Ji-hyuk pulls his collar aside to reveal the heart doodle on his chest, making Ji-won tear up in recognition. He asks her to use him however she likes, just like the allowance her dad gave her, but she points out that pocket money doesn’t have to be spent. She’d rather Ji-hyuk seek his own happiness, but when she asks him what he wants to do in this timeline, he can’t quite answer.

Park Min-young Na In-woo Marry My Husband: Episodes 7-8

As a result of her adamant independence, Ji-won ends up slipping into the lake while trying to retrieve the first place flag. Ji-hyuk rescues her in the nick of time, frantic with worry and panic, and that’s when he finally gives his answer. He wants to be her solid ground, he says, in a sweet callback to her confession of feeling unsteady and adrift like a boat amidst tumultuous waves.

It’s heartbreakingly evident that Ji-won’s been taken advantage of so thoroughly, by those closest to her, that she can’t conceive a middle ground. Accustomed to giving her all at her own expense in order to acquiesce to others’ demands, Ji-won is terrified that she’ll be exploiting others in the same way by asking for their help. What she doesn’t yet understand is that there’s a difference between craving unilateral service and relying on friends for mutual support, and I think that’ll be the second arc of her growth trajectory (the first being the independence that she’s currently reclaiming).

Park Min-young Na In-woo Marry My Husband: Episodes 7-8

Soo-min blatantly reveals her true colors when she viciously attacks Ji-won to steal the #1 flag, but Ji-won turns the tables by fighting back (with some satisfying hair pulling). When Soo-min snaps at Ji-won afterwards, incensed that she’s not acting like the pushover she used to be, Ji-won can’t hold back any longer. Admitting that she’s grown to dislike Soo-min and her two-faced ways, Ji-won disengages from Soo-min’s temper tantrum and leaves her fuming.

Stung by Ji-won’s rejection, Soo-min plots revenge in exactly the way Ji-won had been hoping for. In a calculated act of pitiful pouting, Soo-min seduces the simpleminded Min-hwan, and they end up heatedly making out. Ji-won watches her success from a distance, but she can’t help the tears that spill over. She hadn’t had the chance to grieve what she’d lost, given her abrupt death and subsequent time travel, and the betrayal is finally sinking in. Thoughtfully, Ji-hyuk covers her eyes, quietly comforting her as she weeps for the relationships she once treasured.

Since Min-hwan is the lowest of the low, he truncates his affair with Soo-min by suggesting that their steamy tryst remain as a one-off dreamlike memory. It’s partially fueled by his opportunistic cowardice, and partially fueled by his poor stocks investment, which prompts him to propose to Ji-won ahead of schedule in an attempt to secure her financial assets.

Cue a flashback to Min-hwan’s original proposal, which had been hilariously low-effort and pathetically insincere. I mean, dollar store balloons, egg and Nutella sandwiches, and “Will you merry me?” The bar is rock-bottom and Min-hwan is still shimmying underneath it. Needless to say, Ji-won is downcast at the thought of reliving that nightmare proposal on her first birthday since returning to the past.

Wanting to give Ji-won the celebration that she deserves, Ji-hyuk swoops in to develop drone technology several years ahead of its time and organize a spectacular light show proposal. While Min-hwan slips the rhinestone ring onto his fiancée’s finger, Soo-min vows to steal him away, and Ji-hyuk promises to do everything he can for Ji-won. As for our heroine, she basks in the moment, anticipating the day Soo-min heralds her own downfall.

Marry My Husband: Episodes 7-8

This drama continues to strike a surprisingly effective balance between comedy and heartfelt emotional depth, which grounds its premise through deeply relatable character motivations. There’s just something universal about the desire to prove ourselves, or the visceral overwhelm of ingrained fear responses, or the instinctive association of accepting help with weakness (even if our rational brain knows that’s not true).

It’s for this reason that I love the trajectory the show has taken with our main couple — there’s a lot of charged tension, but not once have they acted on it. Instead, they’ve established a shared safe space where they can be vulnerable and honest with each other, which I’d say is one of the most precious gifts one can give.

Park Min-young Na In-woo Marry My Husband: Episodes 7-8

For all that this show is a fun revenge romp, it’s also taking a realistically measured pace with Ji-won’s recovery. While she still has traumatic flashbacks of Min-hwan’s violence, she also can’t help the fond memories of their loving days that resurface from time to time. Ji-won also struggles with the guilt of speaking ugly truths, to which Ji-hyuk aptly points out the reason — she’s too kind to hurt others, even if the words have to be said.

On that note, I love that Ji-won’s started going for judo practice regularly, and that Ji-hyuk’s told her about how he saved their little kitten Pang (a.k.a. the cutest character of this show). The show carves out little pockets of wholesome moments, like Hee-yeon and Eun-ho’s meet-cute at his restaurant, or Seok-joon’s affirmation of Joo-ran’s capabilities that suggests that he’s not quite a bad egg after all. These scenes may be brief, and they may not be all that vital to the main storyline, but they enrich the drama’s world in a way that fleshes out its characters. It adds even more dimension to the story, and keeps me both invested and entertained.

It's been some time since I've not even had the thought of skipping even a single moment of an episode of a drama, but that's how I was during episode seven of Marry My Husband. I was there for it. Every second.

Episode eight didn't hold me as tightly, but I still enjoyed myself...perhaps moreso than many? FWIW, the scene I wanted to skip was the hair-pulling in the forest. That's not the type of revenge I like best--I like getting crazy-dark "messing with people's minds" revenge instead. In fiction. I like doing it seeing it in fiction.

Aaanyway, I do have some questions. Why is it that Ji-hyuk is convinced that he's gonna die in 10 years? Why does he not assume that he just needs to find someone else to die for him like Ji-won? I have some candidates for him 😙. Also, is it noble idiocy if you leave her before she even cares about you in return? If not, is it just noble...or is it just idiocy?

Also, I admit to being super dense--why did Su-min give up the first place flag to Ji-won? Something about a camper v. glamping? It was a metaphor for something? Did I need to pay attention to the hair-pulling to understand??

Boy, that Min-hwan, though. He really is a sleaze. An admirably persistent one, but a sleaze all the same. Although, you have to give him credit for actually verbalizing the thought of having two wives as an option. I mean, it's not like he has a hidden agenda. It's just an agenda.

PS: @solstices if Seok-joon turns out to be "a not quite a bad egg after all," let's hope it isn't actually worse-r and he ends up being an egg and nutella sandwich. EEEWWEWW 🤢🤢🤢🤢

Ji Won stole the flag back during the hair pulling. Soomin could not claim first place without the flag. Technically Ji Won cheated in the end as she was out after the name tag ripping.
I think Ji Hyuk is convinced he’s going to die for a possible couple of reasons:1) unlike JiWon he had a good life, nobody did him wrong, I imagine he doesn’t think it’s fair to pass that fate on another person when he has no valid reason to do so. 2) he was sent back by her father, it’s possible he things the only reason is as her allowance/ to help her.

I hear you on the Ji-hyuk. Like I say, I have some folks he could maybe sacrifice (FICTITIOUSLY, I mean only in fiction) ;)

I still actually don't get why Su-min would have ceded the flag--I agree that there was cheating, and I actually don't think that Ji-won ended up in possession of the flag at the end of the scene!

I took her as Ji Won overpovered her in the end and Sumin had no choice over loosing the flag. But the execution and editing was a bit lacking so I could be wrong.

I was puzzled by how she finally got the flag back, too. Cheating to fight cheaters seems like a breakthrough for Ji-won.

I find it amusing how little effort the show is making to transport us back in time with props, styles, etc. I haven’t noticed whether cars are older, but I doubt it. I don’t remember pink tweed and shorts-suits being ubiquitous in 2013, and I’m pretty sure that was during the prolonged era when 3-piece suits for men were not in fashion.

Poor Na In-woo was shaking uncontrollably during the water scene - he must have been so cold.

I thought Ji Won had already won and it was already known that she had gotten the flag. Seems the whole thing was a way of just getting into a fight with Su Min haha

Su Min ripped her name tag and took the flag, I assume Ji Won did the same thing back to her.

I don't know. I was confused alot

Ah, I think I have this one: The game was to keep the flag until a certain time. That's why Ji-won left the tent after drying off--she wanted to play the game "fairly" and roam about with everyone, risking someone stealing the flag by ripping her name off the back of her vest.

Which Su-min TOTALLY DID. And then Ji-won fought back by saying "Why glamp when you can camp?" Or was it "I already have the glamper so why don't you have the camper?"

No, no, I tease, but she said something nonsensical like that...and then lo-and-behold, she retained the first flag from this feat of linguistic integrity.

Hair pulling was so unnecessary. Especially when Ji-won knows Judo now. FLING HER!

I have some thoughts and questions, (and comments) that I should write down at some point.
But one point that I can already reveal is what a wonderful cat's dad Ji-hyuk is. Have you spotted those cat shelves on the wall?

Another point is about Seok-joon who seems to be the ladder Mrs. Yang needs to climb out of the never-ending hole of her unassertiveness.

Ok, 3rd point before writing my thoughts more in detail later: Nutella sandwich is a win by me. The pairing with egg sandwich is a monstrosity, but Nutella... I will not Merry you Min-hwan, but we can go snacking together. I'll have the Nutella, you can keep the egg sandwich, and we'll be gwenchana. And while you eat, you're not pissing anybody off, so this is a bonus for everyone.

These were the first episodes I watched and 2 things stood out to me. 1: did Min Hwan seriously borrow money from Ji Won to buy Su Min a necklace? And then complimented Su Min on the necklace? Is that seriously what happened or am I mistaken? 2: Ji Won and Min Hwan were together 17 years?! She put up with him for 17 years?! He betrayed her with her BEST FRIEND after 17 YEARS?!

I don't remember the timeline in the webtoon but for some reason I thought it was shorter. Hell, even the 10 years is a long time to put up with that treatment.

My heart hurts for Ji Won.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I think the changes made to the drama are really good and cool choices. I don't *think* there was any mention of the proposal in the webtoon so to see this version, this terrible, inconsiderate, lackluster moment just stands out. And even if it did happen in the webtoon, seeing it in live action is worse haha.

The proposal with the drones was so cool! I'm not even in proposals especially public proposals but this was so good and pretty. I didn't even know drones could be used in such a way. I clearly lack imagination.

It’s my understanding it was 17 years in the original timeline. 7 years saying and 10 married before she died. In this timeline they have been saying for 7 I think. 7 too many with a guy like that.
Like you, I also think the changes they did to the webtoon are the right choice.

Ji Hyuk is not exactly a complex character and I liked the fact that he himself acknowledges that. By the show addressing it it’s easy to accept that he’s just a guy who’s had a good life, despite his parents dying he had a loving family and his unrequited love for Ji Won was his life’s big regret. I didn’t have a problem with him not quite getting when they had that conversation in the woods in episode 7 that what Ji Won was asking was for him to be her solid land that she can go to when things get too hard rather than him just doing things for her and then shouting at her in the water. 1) because it makes him seem a bit more human and a tiny bit little less as this perfect character “gifted” to Ji Won 2) because character growth. I don’t need the leads to get everything right from the start. Once he voiced he wanted to be her solid land he proceeded to do exactly that on her terms. 3) because Ji Won did endanger herself
As for the other two, I’m rooting for their love, first time I’m looking forward to more of an affair. Min Hwan is so messy I can’t take him seriously or be too annoyed.

I said this on the fan wall but I have to mention it here too cause I just love that original timeline proposal so much. It’s the wooorst. And a brilliant use of setting to say so much about a character and relationship without any words. The details in this scene are great: the deflated balloons , the gross nutella & yellow stuff sandwich with the nutella jar and dirty knife still on the table, the stains on the table and of course the Me(a)rry me paper.
I enjoyed both episodes

I really didn't get that elaborate proposal at the end. Was there any discussion of it? Why do it? and why would Ji-hyuk fund such an outrageous ceremony? It really wasn't necessary to advance the marry my husband revenge, and doesn't an actual engagement as opposed to an understanding--that Su-min would still swoop in grab for herself--expose Ji-won to even more violence on the part of Mi-hwan, because he would treat her as his possession? Plus, if I could nitpick, that drone show was WAAY ahead of its time. Although when you look on the Internet, the first drone light show was 2012, the technology for that sophisticated computer control didn't really become widely available until several later--the Winter Olympics in 2018 was really the big breakthrough, so that private show would just not have happened in 2013-not that I'm holding this show to any sort of tech reality standard.
Also, I'm with @attiton--it hasn't even occurred to Ji-hyuk that maybe he can avoid the accident and not die? Perhaps its true by the absurd time travel rules the show has set out, that someone else has to die in a car accident, but what about Ji-won? If she doesn't die, does that mean someone else will die of cancer/domestic abuse?

Anyway, these were not my favorite episodes, although I did like the original marriage proposal, which was similar my real life one, although my sandwich was more neatly presented and was on fancy rye bread, I spelled "marry" correctly, and I used a colored marker.

In regards to the marriage proposal it’s so outrageous because she has to make Min-Hwan more appealing so Soomin will do everything she can to steal him. The affair didn’t completly work in Ji Won’s favour, and they said in voiceover in the bus scene how she didn’t win yet and it’s the first time a guy doesn’t just dissapear from her life after Soomin makes a pass at him. She knew Min-Hwan was going to propose (he basically asked when they were having drinks togheter) so made a public display of it to spike Soomin’s jealousy.
In regards to the drones yeah, it’s not 2013 technology, wonder if they will explain that in next episodes. But the show overall hasn’t made much effort to realistically make it seem it’s 2013.

I have a theory about the drones--but I'm so bored by making sense of this show, I can't even give a full explication (hint: I think that's what they were talking about in the Ji-hyuk's granddad's office in the scene just prior, even though there weren't antecents offered for any of the pronouns used).

Question for @hacja : All things considered, is it preferable to have a romp of a drama with no rules? Or a rule-bound drama that's dry as a bone?

I can tell you this...I'm not investing my heart into any of these relationships, though, because "no rules" with **cough** a CAT-MAN **cough** around means the deep philosophical meaning focused on love, loss, and fate is just around the bend.

We'll need watch out for the drones there, too.

You actually could be right about the drone technology as what they were talking about, but I'm sorry, that is a STEP TOO FAR for my fastidious exactitude that demands absolute adherence to rigorously defined fantasy circumstances.
Obviously if it was up to me every fantasy show would open up with a set of rules and disclaimers that not only included "this show does not correspond to any actual circumstances or characters living or dead, and "no cats were harmed in this drama" but also provided trigger warnings: "In this show we are subscribing to the following rules in terms of time slips and time travel, but we reserve the right to change them in episode 9 if we want to, so if you're going to whine about it, quit watching now."

A fun romp with no rules is like fast-food but a dry drama with rules that make sense is like fine dining.

I'll take that dry drama with intricate sets
& unique locations, gorgeous color palettees, incredible cinematography, wonderful background music, fashionable attire and top stars.

2

Was it an actual question? I thought you were just making fun of my thoughtful interpretative qualms about this show, as usual.

I would say for this one, the idea that everything that happened in the past is destined for someone somewhere, might provide a nice way to complicate the revenge. It keeps things going for 16 episodes, and allows for a lot of fuzziness,
although when you think about it, it makes every decision fraught. What if, in the new timeline, Ji-won buys herself the last Melona bar in the store? Then will the grandparent who in the past timeline bought it for her grandchild, have to content herself by buying the child a bad Subway sandwich?

However, even if its okay if the rules are confusing, to really enjoy a romp of a show, I think all characters should at least subscribe to them, so in this case Ji-hyuk wouldn't be moping around, and drinking heavily while discharging firearms.

3

@hacja I never waste words.

Ji Hyuk knows drone technology is going to take off. The proposal does a few things at once- 1. He makes his grandfather/ the company aware of the technology, meaning his grandfather increases investment in it.(That's what happened in the grandfather scene- Grandfather confused about why JH would do a proposal for the girl he likes- for someone else- and noticing the technology )2.He gives Ji-won a fun birthday, as different to the sad event she was going to force herself to live thru for a second time. 3. He gives Ji-won a lovely proposal. Ji-won knows that Ji-Hyuk organised it all, even though its officially Mi-hwans proposal.
At this point, Ji-Hyuk is thinking that he will never be able to actually propose to Ji-won, because he knows that he will die in 10 years, and he wants something more secure for her . So the proposal is a bit vicarious on his part. Ji-hyuk isn't even thinking of avoiding the accident because he is a nice guy-making someone else die instead of him would be cruel. (Unlike Ji won, who has a ready made villain that she can redirect her death too, all Ji Hyuk has to blame is a cat)
The proposal has to happen- Ji-won says that she has a plan to get SM and MH to marry, but the down side is living thru the sad proposal again.
Obvious issue- Ji-hyuk being silly about his car crash. He is underestimating the attraction of ten years of marriage with a chaebol heir who loves you.
-JW has had a public proposal now. Is she planning to also be publically dumped?

It's ridiculous of me to belabor this point, so I apologize, but a drone proposal like that would not have been possible until the computer technology advanced, as it did several years later. The 2012 show was very unsophisticated, so the kind of elaborate imagery and writing would NOT have been available for even a chaebol heir. A brief video 2012 is here: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/gadgets/49-drones-light-sky-art-installation-flna979051

I think Ji-won kinda missed the bus. But would he have let her help him make money? He's wildly overconfident in his stock-picking abilities and frequently belittles her intelligence and competence, so I don't see him taking her advice. He doesn't seem to think he's too good for JW, he just wants to have both her and Su-min on the side, and it feeds his sense of importance to have JW take care of him and sacrifice her own interests for his. And I agree that she wants them to be as miserable as they made her. Helping MH get rich works against that goal.

I've been concerned about the idea of JW coming back in time to take revenge for events and abuse that haven't yet occurred, but now we've seen plenty of horrible behavior from both MH and SM even before she got married. Flipping the consequences around against the perpetrators seems more justified now.

Is Ji-won really taking revenge on MH and SM, though, or is she just trying to make the best of her second chance at life? So far all she has done is to set things right for herself, rather than hurt anyone directly. If she could have shaken MH and SM off, or produced good work without having it stolen, I think she would have quietly got on with her life instead of doing all this plotting and scheming.

Not sure he'd give up on trapping Ji-Won if rich. While being rich he would still want a nice trophy wife to parade around while doing his nasty stuff on the side.

Ji Hyuk and Ji won rs r so wholesome. I can't. This is the magic, they made me feel feelings. And end of ep was so... JH is willing to pay for MH proposal just for JW don't feel miserable OMG.
And when JH called his life well written book, basically boring and very predictable, I can't help but remember how many ppl called JH character boring and not interesting in first eps pf drama but now he slowly began to be mich more interesting and 3D.
I love how JW finally fought SM for 2nd time and more openly.
Also kudos for 2nd main actors. They r such a scumbags. Good job in making us hate them. I cringed soo much from their actions in 7 and 8th eps. So you can be that despicable??
Also reunion with Pang was cutest thing ever!!!
It is the case when I didn't wait much for drama but it really exceeded my expectations.

I had mixed feelings about these episodes.

First, the good:
I, too, appreciate that the writing is more thoughtful and even realistic when it comes to depicting Ji-won's healing journey. It makes sense that she would remember sweet moments with Mi-hwan, go back and check on Soo-min after the initial flag scuffle in the woods, and feel fresh pain and grief after witnessing these two hook up and betray her with such callousness. It also makes sense that she isn't here right now for any of Ji-hyuk's romantic intentions; she's simply too busy making sure she doesn't die (again). Her plea to him to let her take all actions and make all choices herself--with him there only to serve as a supportive sounding board--also makes sense, and is probably the healthiest thing for her to do. (But more later on why this isn't necessarily working for me personally.)

When it comes to the side characters, I am ready for both Chef and Hee-yeon and Seok-joon and Joo-ran to move forward (not yet sure if the latter couple is supposed to be romantic, as she's married and all, but I'm liking the chemistry so far). And Min-hwan and Soo-min continue to be absolutely, deliciously AWFUL together. That whole hook-up in the grocery store--with her writing "I want to do it" over and over in her notebook for him to read--was so perfectly juvenile and cringey.

As much as I loved the hairpulling showdown in the woods, I was impressed with the way Soo-min responded exactly as a narcissist with a strong external locus of control would: by acknowledging that she is as terrible as Ji-won says, but will take absolutely no responsibility for it whatsoever. Of course in her mind the fault lies only with Ji-won for letting her behave this way. That was well done.

But I guess I'm starting to feel a little fatigue with the fact that there seems no way for Ji-won to truly escape her fate right now. How can she possibly be rid of these two? Even with the alternate choices she makes, everything keeps ending up roughly the same. And now, here she is, engaged once again to Min-hwan.

As a result, this drama is more and more about revenge and less about romance. I'm not saying that's a negative in an of itself, but I am getting antsy, and just a teensy bit bored. Just last week we ended on a big, bold moment that should have brought Ji-hyuk and Ji-won closer together: they know each other's biggest secret! But instead, I felt like they somehow grew even further apart by the end of episode 8. I completely see why Ji-hyuk is getting drunk despite his promises to the chef to stop doing so: Ji-won friend-zoned him so hard that even though (as I said above) I respect her choice to want to execute her plan independently without Ji-hyuk rushing in to rescue her, she doesn't seem to have any real attraction to or interest in him at all. I thought that was building in previous episodes, but it seemed to come to a dead stop in these two, and as a result, it felt like the...

I think it is just you are here for romance, as mb you prefer this jenre, but personally I think it is good that they are still at revenge. I will be more worried if they already jump into romance of main leads at half point bcs it is too early to keep it going for next 8 eps and in cases like this we can expect for sure atleast one break up or misunderstanding. For how JH and JW rs develops if they will be together they will be together for eternity. I am a bit worried abt this new girl though.
In this drama ro,antic progress is much more believable bcs it is built up slowly on little things. It is just easilly missed if you are got used for usual kdrama's romance development, IMHO.

I'm not here just for the romance, which is why I described several non-romantic things about the drama that I'm truly enjoying. I am, however, criticizing the progress of romance so far. Yes, it's slow, and I agree that that makes it more believable in certain ways. But the problem for me isn't the pace; it's that prior to these two episodes it was building momentum and being clear to show a subtle but clear progression in mutual romantic feelings. For me, these two episodes undercut that progress and momentum in a way that made the overall story less satisfying.

Plus she’s stated she doesn’t want to be like Su-Min, I doubt the show will go there with the romance till Ji-Won is a free woman to avoid the bad optics. As no matter the circumstances, to everyone else she is in a relationship, anything more with Ji Hyuk at this stage would sort of make her a cheater too.

That's an excellent point. She feels bad enough just for telling SM the truth that she doesn't like her any more and is crushed by actually witnessing her and MH making out; being as (seemingly) deceitful and unfaithful as those two would do violence to her principles and self-image.

I don't feel the central relationship is being dragged out unnecessarily, but like @LaurenSophie I think it's been unevenly paced. Everything in episodes 1-6 makes it look like they're hurtling toward mutual feelings, and then it suddenly goes off track. It makes sense that JW wouldn't be as ready for it as JH is; he's been interested in her for a long time, but he wasn't even on her radar the first time around in her life, and she's focused on getting away from MH and her original fate because that means life or death to her. She doesn't remember her drunken college encounter with him and didn't recognize him when she was hired, right? She's eager for his friendship and support but seems oblivious to him as a man (despite the confession, the judo throws, and wearing his heart on his pecs 🙄), and I think the drama would have done better to emphasize that in the earlier episodes. It's inconsistent with how she shows interest in him in the first couple of episodes, like the soup/steamy glasses moment. I still feel like there are missing or jumbled scenes.

I think it builds rather well. I rather the drama builds the drama rather slowly when it comes to romance. Otherwise, once it reaches 10-15, the plot will die out, and slowly it will drag and there is nothing left to watch like My Demon.

3

Wearing your heart on your pecs. I think we have a stronger, fresher idiom now than the old wearing your heart on your sleeves. 🤣 Well, if only it wasn't a literal silly blue doodle.

5

The main problem with the drama for me is the weird, artificial rule of the principle of equivalent exchange that governs the second chance at life. It is only because of this that she cannot dump boyfriend and friend as she should and wants and get together with gentleman Ji-hyuk. It is all a bit silly and I cannot take the drama too seriously, but I enjoy many of the characters, the lecherous acting of the boyfriend and the way Soo-min drops her mask more and more openly.

The first half has done a solid job fleshing out the characters, and creating intrigue: Who is Yu-Ra? What happened to Pang's white spots, and why was he out in the road instead of in Ji-Hyuk's apartment? What's up with Yang Joo-ran & Lee Sook-Jun?

Now, we are looking forward to 8 more episodes to further develop the tension, resolve the tension and solve the leads issue of how long their "overtime" is for. Likely, it will take until the last 3 minutes of the last episode of this drama for Ji-Huk to confess his love and marry Ji-Won.

At this point, I'm in for the next 8--how about you?

I think some of this confusion reflects choppy editing. Suddenly throwing in Joo-ran/Suk-joon, Yu-ra, and drones were probably supposed to come across as intriguing hints of developments to come, but instead those made me think I'd missed some scenes along the way. I do not care if the drama introduces new characters that were not in previous versions of the story because I'm experiencing and judging the drama on its own, but it's not always doing a great job of integrating characters and info smoothly.

I can overlook the wrong cat problem, as it's probably hard enough finding cat actors and the resemblance is no worse than that of most child actors to their adult versions, but someone really needs to do a better job of keeping kitty indoors.

@qingdao, I'm in until 5 minutes before it all goes wrong! And I rely on beanies living their second lives @hacja to tell me exactly when that's coming.

Joo-ran and Seok-jun seem rather similar to Ji-won and Ji-hyuk. Joo-ran had the awful boss and still has the awful husband, while in 2023 Seok-jun appears to have abruptly left U&K, possibly cos something bad happened to Joo-ran or he'd failed to help her or something. (I think JH mentioned to JW that one of his regrets was failing to persuade SJ to stay.)

Hopefully JW and JH will use their knowledge of the future to help JR and SJ too.

I just want to say, though, a more general comment that the actress playing Soo-min is doing an amazing job. She's PERFECT. It's funny because I saw her in Oh Young-sim and all of the things I disliked about her portrayal of the FL in that drama are what make this performance so stellar.

Also, just from reading the recap, how frustrating that they're dragging out Ji-hyuk and Ji-wan's relationship development like this.

From my standpoint, dragging it out makes sense because both lead characters were in a state of shock - and jumping into treacherous time travel waters would be. . . .treacherous.

I was shocked that the actress (Song Ha Yoon) was the same as Oh Youngsim - which indicates that she's a pretty good actress.

I hesitated to start this drama because fantasy/time travel + revenge is unappealing, but positive reviews by others plus PMY gave me the push. I binged the first 6 episodes last week and enjoyed 7 & 8.

The underlying premise is vunique compared to so many other recent romances (Demon, King Land something, DWY) that were nothing more than romances with different flavors. This drama is fresh dynamic. Umami flavor rather than sweet.

Yet, I'm on the fence. If Ji won's history is semi-repeating itself, then why don't we have some flashbacks of the original camping event? I feel like the writer simply said - she changed her history (stocks, meal kit proposal, etc) so it doesn't matter what happened previously - except apparently it DID matter (thinking about the scars and accidents). So, what made "fantasy" sense (the "rules") in the beginning are no longer worth mentioning - and that's when a show begins to lose me.

Anyway, there are those of us who care about the "rules" and consistency (there are several of us on the Live Your Own Life board that are tearing our hair out because the writer is making up her own laws, regulations and corporate governance protocols) and those who focus on technology/history (i.e. facts). Wish kdrama writers would do the same.

I think "everything is destined to happen" is more a grand karmic statement rather than anything specific. So someone needed to be bullied by the one dimensional Mean Girls at the reunion. He helped to offload that fate to Soo-min instead of the female lead.

9

Also I think you're forgetting the very strong Lead Character vibes in this one. It's the female lead's world. The other characters just happen to live in it.

8

Yeap, it is definitely fresher than any rich-boy-meets-poor-girl-then-fell-in-love story, as there is revenge and the need to lead a better second life.

They showed it though. Last time SM used teamleader Kim to bring her 1st flag (IDK if you miss it there was a scene where Teamleader Kim with towel, drying his hair and SM came out to receive the prize), this time bcs teamleaser Kim was absent bcs he was suspended bcs meal kits scandal SM tried to use MH. So SM behaviour perfectly repeats the past-she always find the way to use everyone around her for reaching her goals.

Thanks for clairifcation. I think perhaps your comment helps explain my confusion for different scenes with the flags. . .but perhaps I wasn't paying enough attention to the hairstyles or on-off eyeglasses to pick-up the time period. For instance (and this is a rhetorical question) were there actually two hair-pulling events back in "old" 2013 or did both of them occur in "new" 2013. Or, was one old and one new?

Old v. new - have Beannies come up with approved terms for the different time-lines?😄

Never seen Song Ha-yoon before this show, and I must say she is a revelation. Soo-min could easily have become a caricature, but the precision of Song's acting makes the character horribly fascinating.

Completely agree that SM is also pitiable. I'm getting the impression that, while Ji-won would have been perfectly capable of finding happiness on her own, SM would never have survived if she hadn't had JW to leech off. Her friendship with the high school mean girls was based on her fake complaints about JW. At 30 she only has a contract position at U&K, and only on JW's recommendation. She even made regular trips from Busan to Seoul when JW was at university there. So I think there might be a grain of truth in her apology letter in ep8, as JW surmised.

Angry rant because I got invested in this show: I don’t know what happened with these last two episodes, but I found them to be the reverse of the previous ones in the quality of editing, storytelling and unfortunately in some places acting. The dramatic argument in the water didn’t work for me at all; the leads were both too stiff (maybe due to being cold in the water?) and the artificial tear drops used on PMY broke the immersion. Are we to understand that the sudden flashback to Seok-joon being rude to Joo-ran is supposed to set him up as being a worse a-hole than the previous manager, or? (I’m not interested in manwha references, judging the show on its own) Another sudden switch, but this time to the drone proposal, which for a moment there scared me thinking it was Ji-hyuk proposing in this cringey manner but phew, it was for Min-Hwan. The cat playdate was adorbs, I’ll give them that.

I found Seok-joon's reaction to Joo-ran complex. He both praised her abilities while showing his frustration. She is smart and capable, but she has been kowtowing for so long it is frustrating for others. But I agree, it's not exactly the best way to communicate and effect change! I hope she will get a similar growth arc to Ji-won (minus the murder and time travel).

I agree with your explanation and guessed as much but I think it wasn't conveyed well and that's my frustration. In an episode 7 flashback he flat out tells her that he hates people like her. I have to side with those folks who found these two episodes less compelling than the previous ones for the many mentioned reasons. But I remain invested, fascinated even, because of Ji-won and Soo-min's relationship, which is one of the best portrayals of toxic female friendships that I've seen. Kudos to Song Ha-yoon for making Soo-min the most loathsome yet compelling and believable Best Frenemy Forever.

As to why Ji-won put up with such a BFF, it's not only because of Soo-min's deviousness, but also because of Ji-won's low self-esteem and desperate need for a found family (which is also why she accepted such a merry marriage proposal). So, I also agree, it makes sense Ji-won is determined to build her inner strength and create her new future by herself. But I am sure she will also learn to trust others again and create a better family as the show progresses.

There is something about their relationship that feels grounded despite their societal postions and the fantasy time element.

For me ML's sister is looking same as from the webtoon, i am so surprised that they have matched everyone's character according to webtoon. K dramas do changes in their script apart from webtoon, but for me as i studied the webtoon and admired it so, in some places at series they conveniently changed the scenes according to FL , which had made me disappoint in it. Except this, everything and everyone in this series did the good job even the FL's best friend as well as 'gwaenchanha' guy too.

I started binge-watching this show to catch up, and I don't know whether that was a good thing or not now. Because...I am able to see the stark changes in Ji-won's character that might have seemed more subtle if the episodes came out every week. I know it's a drama trope and it's a very little thing, but I don't like how the new haircut and wardrobe has made Ji-won into a completely new person (free lobotomy with the shopping?). I get that the show is trying to show that her character always might have had this "aura" that had to be hidden because of her low self-esteem, but no body who has been in an emotionally-abusive relationship for that long recovers their self-esteem that fast! Honestly, it's like she went the other extreme and now wears certain outfits that I am not sure is appropriate even in a k-pop office culture. They definitely could have toned down PMJ's wardrobe somewhat even after her transformation. It would have been more poignant if they had shown her going shopping and choosing outfits for herself out of confidence that earlier Su-min or Min-Hwan had told her made her look ugly/fat in. Her then buying these outfits would have been part of her transformation. But now it has just become the "PMJ fashion show" and to me, it distracts me so much from from the story and acting. On the other hand, I think they did the right thing with the subtle fashion change for the ML. Sometimes, less is more people!
