Drama viewership ratings for the week of January 8-14, 2024

Marry My Husband continues on its climb in its second week, nearing 8% already. It looks like word is also getting out for Like Flowers in Sand, because it’s also seeing a slow but steady climb. The same can’t be said for My Demon, however, which has been slowly losing viewers.

But the talk of the week is certainly MBC’s Knight Flower, which premiered to a huge 7.9% and then 8.2% for its second episode. As for our other weekend shows, Welcome to Samdal-ri crosses the 10% mark in its penultimate week, Live Your Own Life hits a personal milestone surpassing 20%, and Maestra ends its run on a high note.

It’s been nice week for dramas.

Wow Welcome to Samdalri hit 10%! I am really surprised that Like flowers in the sand and Tell that you love me are doing so badly when they are quality dramas.

I think an argument could be made that ENA’s LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND’s ratings are not that bad and actually are fairly good if you compare them with some of ENA’s other dramas here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:ENA_television_dramas

The big caveat of course is ENA’s EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WOO (2022) which had an average rating of 10.937% with an episode range of 0.948% (eps.1) to 17.534% (eps. 16-final).

I finally made the plunge into SAND yesterday watching the first 4 episodes. I love it. JDY is giving another great performance. Episodes 5-8 are on tap for today so I should be current for episode 9 on Wednesday.

When it comes to ENA, a 1-3% is not considered to be bad...at least it is not negative or 0. ENA is a fairly new paid-to-view/cable channel in Korea.

However, if it is 1-3% on a public channel like KBS, SBS or a MBC, I would be worried, as these channels are easily accessible by the public, since they can be viewed freely.

It's finally getting interesting. They wasted so many episodes basically doing the same scene over and over. And what's with the FL mother abruptly acting human?

*&&& Spoiler if you haven’t watched latest eps &&&*
Exactly, after her meeting the in law * and her DIL, she’s working and renting a cafe too ?

* I had hoped for a hair pulling, food fight at the chicken shop. Especially with that burrito wrap Madam Jang was wearing over her coat. It was begging for something being splatted on it. A missed opportunity there PD.

MBC strikes again at the weekend slot, thanks to good selection of dramas that come with good casting (with plenty of experiences under their belts). Started with My Dearest and then continued with Park's Contract Marriage and now....Knight Flower).

I'm not really surprised by Love Song for Illusion ratings cause this is kinda were I thought this kinda show would be. Especially since it's considered a "rookie" filled show and people have criticisms of it.

I'm still watching it though. I also think its viewers may have went over to Marry My Husband.

I don't watch My Demon but its loss in viewership continues to confuse me especially since I think it's still on buzz lists and whatnot.

I know for us international viewers, we watch on streaming services but in SK, can viewers watch the episodes anytime after the initial broadcasts? Like could people possibly watch Marry My Husband live and Tell Me You Love Me later (but that doesn't get recorded)?

What is Between Him & Her even about that people aren't watching it? Is the lead actor not a good actor cause I don't think his last project did well either.
I think he's a Super Junior member? I thought fans of idols, even the older generation idols, always turned out for their works.

Buzzy doesn't mean quality or people are actually watching it. It actually means people are talking. Besides, the measurement of buzziness are conducted by GoodData and the respective OTT whereas the ratings which you see on Dramabeans are done by Nielsen Korea.

But if people are talking about it, I would think they are engaged and watching it. Otherwise, what is there to talk about?

From what i read and studied, Nielsen actually installed a box/a tool to measure those who watch whereas, the buzz....well...do not actually translate into watching. Like one can do research and everything or mention it on Facebook or some social media.

I'm not at all surprised by "Knight Flower's" high ratings. It's fun and funny but also, it includes the type of social critique that I've noticed domestic viewers tend to like--that of a past that seems far away so one can shake their heads at the hypocrisy and cruelty while feeling that modern society is so much better for women in comparison.

I love both "Flowers in the Sand" and "Marry My Husband" so am happy to see them getting positive feedback in the form of strong numbers, too. With "My Demon" it's hard for me to get a clear handle on why it is losing viewers. On one hand, I can find things to nitpick or point to--the couple getting together very early or dips in the action--but ultimately, I don't feel there's a tidy explanation for why it hasn't resonated as well with domestic as international viewers. To my mind, it's as solid, entertaining, and pretty to look at as many dramas that have done much better, so who knows why this one isn't hitting.

Finally, I've been saving "Welcome to SamSomething," but am glad to see that its ratings are this high. I like both leads a lot, and even though I know viewers have problems with some aspects of it, it sounds like a well done drama. And I know ratings like this make all involved feel good about the work they did, so just on a human level, this makes me feel good, too.

I quit watching "My Demon" very quickly because both leads and their characters pissed me off. I don't like this feeling when I watch something for entertainment. This is another SBS drama that I didn't like. The only dramas of theirs from recent years that I liked were those from the creators of Penthouse. They are nonsensical, but at least entertaining.

Many Koreans were put off by Song Kang and his co-star acting, in fact many earlier online articles did mentioned about this. Not only that, the writing and the directing did not help.....

I quit my demon bc of the lack of chemistry between the leads so I hated watching them together (I also dislike dohee) and no amount of pretty was going to save that.

I quit Demon too - I now "watch" it through recaps and occasional highlights of the episode here and there, just to keep track of a plot and cute moments. I am as much confounded as you are - I can't really put my finger why I quit that show. Seems like all the elements of a drama there but it just not interest me. I can't even say it's boring because something-something going on there, but still it leaves me cold. I wonder if other people can actually put a finger on why they quit it, I'm curious, because I have no clue myself.

I did not bother to start My Demon as I am not attracted to this hyped and overused storyline, neither am I a big fan of these two actors (Watched their shows in the past and frankly quite burned badly other than Navillera, which was in part due to the amazing casting and message) and their characters from the start. Dramas like these tend to either be on my-drop-list as it cannot offer me anything beyond....eye-candies. I like my dramas to offer social commentaries, something-to-think-of-apart-from-visuals ,more-down-to-earth-and-relatable characters.

I actually can relate to people dropping my demon. Still barely watching to save my bean. I watch on fast forward sef. The drama is tiring, it should have been a 12 episode drama like the story of parks marriage. And the repeated tropes is not refreshing too.🤦‍♀️

I can see why some people stopped watching it some ep have been slow. That's why I like binge watching dramas instead of ongoing ones. My Demon as a whole has been great really funny and the leads have great chemistry. Is it perfect no, but no drama is.

Re M/T dramas, I am sure you are correct.
One of my early favorites was a M/T drama from SBS, Ji Sung’s THE DEFENDANT which aired early in 2017. The ratings were so good that 2 episodes were added. It wound up with a average Nielsen rating of 21.69% with a ratings range of 11.9% (eps. 1) to 28.3% (eps. 18-final). Those were the days. It is a totally different ratings environment now.

M/T used to be MBC's epic sageuk slot.
Dae Jang Geum (2003-03) - 57.1%
Jumong (2006-07) - 51.9%
Queen Seon Deok (2009) - 44.9%

Ooh! It hurts that even Love Song for Illusion is doing better than Tell Me That You Love Me, which continues to be a hidden gem. Sigh.

Less said about Between Him and Her the better. Perhaps would have benefited from a single drop or at least the regular two weekly.

Very happy for Welcome to Samdal-ri, Live Your Own Life and Maestra.

Just wish Marry My Husband is not affected by the latest pot stirring.

My Demon is a conundrum. Best of luck to Like Flowers in Sand and My Happy Ending. Hope they rise higher and higher.

Honey Lee FTW. Surpass 10% soon Knight Flower! Hwaiting!!
