[Drama Chat] Watching for the fun factor
by missvictrix
Watching a drama solely for the fun factor is an entirely different experience than watching a drama for the wonderful characters and writing, or for the stellar cast, or a PD whose work you love.
But shouldn’t all drama-watching be fun, you ask? Yes, it should — but this kind of fun is different. When we’re watching *purely* for the fun factor, the inner critic gets to go take a nap in the back while we just enjoy the ride. Plot holes, plot armor, shoddy editing? No problem. I’m having fun. Nothing can unglue me from this story right now.
Currently, for me that drama is My Happy Ending — too fast, too furious, too all over the place… and totally too much fun to watch.
What have you been watching for the pure fun factor? What have been some of your most surprising fun factor watches?

Thanks for doing this post as hopefully the collective will come up with some gems. After Twinkling Watermelon, and The Matchmakers finished and the Dog show went into a dark place I have had to get by with KBS specials or other rom com films which are not easy to find. I am also rewatching The producers slowly as that is a guaranteed fun watch.

You're All Surrounded
My Lawyer Mr Jo
Partners for Justice
Good Casting.
You could nitpick at the writing, direction, editing etc of all these dramas and find something to complain about, but honestly i found them to be so much fun, whether its one lone crusader or a ragtag group of misfits, its always fun to watch a classic good guys vs bad guys drama.

I just started this and agree. The writing is very uneven, some scenes go around in circles, and the humor is pretty basic, but the leads are both so pretty and talented that it all goes down pretty easy.

How about Perfect Marriage Revenge! It was in part great because the drama, itself, knew that the best way to enjoy it would be to just go with the flow.
My other contribution here is actually Welcome to Samdal-ri. The writer is actually doing a pretty fine job of interweaving a set of about four inter-generational story lines, but to really enjoy them, you really gotta let go and just ride the wave of the actual actions being acted by the actors.
I wish I had taken this attitude to King the Land as well, because in retrospect, I can see that when I said negative things about it during the live-watch, it was because I wanted to much from the show. If I'd just let go and surrendered to all of it...it would have been way more fun!!

Agree about PMR! The premise is all kinds of whacky on paper, but once you start watching, it’s just so much fun! I have to admit though, that it worked especially well as a community watch. Hyping each other up was 50% of the fun in this (or more!) 😂

This attitude toward King the Land was exactly what I was urging on Dramabean gloomsters throughout its whole run--and yet on the fun score, I was the voice of the prophet crying out in the wilderness.
Besides, how much more fun could you want from a show that had a whole episode dedicated to Junho and Yoona kissing in Thailand? Speaking of fun watches, a travelogue series with that as a theme would have me glued to the screen: "Junho and Yoona Breakfast and Coffee Kiss in Vienna" "Junho and Yoona Cruise and Kiss in Norway's Fjords" "Junho and Yoona Beach and Snorkle Kiss in Antigua," etc.

This is making a lot of sense for KTL and maybe explains some other folks’ feelings toward it as well? I like to know the premise and the cast of dramas, but generally go into them with as few expectations as possible about the tone/side stuff and just let the drama happen. If I don’t like it I can always cut out. But KTL was an unabashedly fun drama and certainly the most fun I had drama-watching last year, and I think it’s because I was not expecting anything except to be charmed by all the relationships and especially by the OTP and Junho. And then I was! So it was a happily ever after for me and that drama. Maybe give it another go someday?

@Unaspirated: Totally agree. King the Land was also the most fun I had watching a Kdrama last year. Junho's varied talents weren't wasted at all...because it seemed like he was having a great time enjoying himself like he does on stage when he's singing, And Yoona sparkled along with him. Their easy physical harmony & connection as actor-friends gave us a lot of swoon-worthy moments ...and oof!..those kisses. I agree too that we often come to a drama with expectations based on what the actors or even the PDs have brought to the table before & seeing them do something different might disappoint, but I'm glad Jun-ho knocked back expectations and hit for the bleachers on this one. Some might have missed the home run, but it was a 'catch' for me.

Though I much respect fellow Beanies’ affection for King the Land, and their sensible suggestions to just forget that Jun-ho is one of the best actors to be found and instead just sit back and enjoy, (minority voice here) I just can’t go there. I kept fast-forwarding KTL and waiting for the tortured soul that I so love to emerge, but alas, it never did.
So, I cannot explain why I enjoyed much of the silliness in Heartbeat. IMO, nobody can pull off goofiness while maintaining masculine allure like Taec. Not even Jun-ho.

My fun factor dramas are definitely the C-dramas wherein one just KNOWS it’s a low budget made and produced in a very “fast fashion” sense—for a quick ROI— wherein there’s not much put into production values or writing and the plot is as overused and as campy and cliché as ever, but because it owns all of that, it’s what makes it enjoyable to watch for fun

That's also what I do!
Given that I've been told, and observed that kdramas are of better quality, I ask more of them. Whereas I sometimes watch a very silly cdrama with full knowledge of low script originality etc just because the premise sound fun. My lethal man was excellent in this (until the kiss in the green pullover).

I just can’t with low-quality & low-originality K-dramas anymore, I much prefer the C-dramas equivalent. At least to me, personally, I find that the acting in C-dramas can still sustain me when nothing else does— lest a low-quality script— but low-quality in Kdramaland is simply campy and cringey to me— nothing else—and I am well passed this stage in my drama-watching journey— I can make better use of my time 😅 An example of a low-quality low script originality Cdrama that I actually liked and revisited a few times is “Time to Fall in Love” (https://mydramalist.com/701349-dong-lun-dao-wo-lian-ai-le), which also brought to my attention C-actor, Luo Zheng, and makes me anticipate his works even more. And maybe it is this trait of wherein even if the C-drama is the most low-budget “fast fashion” drama purposely made for a quick ROI, I am still able to find a redeeming quality to it and some part of my curiosity is piqued— in this specific case, it’s discovering and coming to like a new actor— that is why I am able to keep with them. I can’t say the same for low-budget low script quality Kdramas

I would say that a lot of the dramas I watch in the early days fit into this category, especially the Taiwanese dramas - Devil Beside You, Fated to Love You, Sunny Happiness, The Prince Who Turns Into a Frog, etc. For Jdramas, Hana Kimi, Mei-chan no Shitsuji, and Hana Yori Dango definitely fit the list.
For Kdramas, the list is long because there's a lot of dramas I absolutely love and am very forgiving towards, because I enjoyed watching them so much: You're Beautiful, Boys Over Flowers, City Hunter, Mary Stayed Out All Night, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, The Greatest Love, Legend of the Blue Sea, The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry, What's Wrong With Secretary Kim.
As for Cdramas, I came to them much later so I don't have as many. Love Between Fairy and Devil was definitely a fun watch. So was You Are My Glory and Hidden Love.

Binging The King helps bring out the great humor, focus on the amazing love story and understand the complex story because you can go back to things you don't understand. Good acting matters, but to me most kdramas have stellar acting. The characters are what hook me. As long as I am enjoying hanging out with the characters, I don't mind too much messy plot.

This is also so true for me haha I don't work too hard to find plot holes normally, it's just fun to watch the story progress. What gets me is when the communication between leads gets bad or one sided. I can't stand noble idiocy normally unless it's really, really well done.

Any recommendations for a well done noble idiocy?

If it is well done, it is not idiocy. Says this Bean! 😁

So if I'm giving recommendations I want to define Noble Idiocy a bit more. To me, Noble Idiocy is when someone purposefully distances themselves or breaks up with someone they still love, without telling them the real reason why, because they think that is the best option they have as opposed to sitting down and discussing it.
I think for me to accept the noble idiocy I also have to really agree that the reason they want to distance themselves/break up is objectively super valid and not something which a normal couple may be faced with and try to overcome. In which case, I have to agree with @Midnight, it doesn't feel so idiotic.
Examples of good noble idiocy:
Call it Love (dating the son of your father's mistress after secretly entering his company to get revenge)
Come and Hug Me (dating the son of the man who brutally murdered your family and other's families) - let it be specified that I actually don't like breakups when they feel like "it will protect the other person from the stalker/murderer". That's not logical, the stalker may still go after them. Stick together. But having to work through and face the emotions of dating your parent's murderer's son would be tooough.
Even a drama like Tempted (He specifically started dating her to dump her as a part of a bet) I have an easier time understanding, given that it will inevitably cause a huge wound to the other and they might not be mature enough to suffer the consequences without destroying the relationship and causing more pain. So those are my recommendations for "yes" watches to Noble Idiocy. I'll make a separate comment with a NOOOO watches for Noble Idiocy. Or at least shows where I didn't like the noble idiocy.

I'm actually having a hard time thinking of shows where there was noble idiocy and I just hated it, probably because I either dropped them or blocked it from my memory. Someone else, help?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I actually agree with all three. @Midnight, of course has a great point. 👍
My quibble with Call it Love was not that the OTP decided to break-up but that the FL's family never bothered to inform her that they actually have no objection to the relationship and that the mother had a meal with ML to effectively say so. But the brother was a sweetie of course who always maintained a relationship with ML and then finally decided to pair them up. 😀

You're right, thinking of bad noble idiocy is tougher. I agree with your definition, it is indeed text-book understanding of the trope but it is important to clarify / reiterate.

Right now I'm thoroughly enjoying the utterly unserious c-drama The Romance of Tiger and Rose. I'll be posting more on my fan wall this week.

Perfect Marriage Revenge was a perfect fun watch based on the squees and the comeuppances of the bad guys. And the pacing was spot on--there was no draggy filler or discordant serial killer (looking at you Crash Course in Romance)
My new gem find for a fun watch is Lost Romance, a Taiwanese Drama. It has all the elements for a fun watch--a swoony ML (where have you been all my life, Marcus Chang?), interesting plot line (the FL falls into an alternate romance novel world, and smart and playful use of tropes. The chemistry between the leads is on fire. The funnest part of the drama is when the FL who at first is the SFL in the alternate romance novel world begins to change the dynamic (e.g., ML always catching a falling FL) by refusing to stick strictly to the expectations of the SFL and just acts as her awesome, plucky self until the ML falls for her and she gets the shiny FL aura ring. Then all the FL stuff begins to happen to her. It's such a fun, smart play on the tropes.
An old fun watch is Lie To Me. Although the drama falls apart in the end, the first half is ridiculously fun and still has the feels.

Hehe shows I watch just for the fun factor?
Kill Me Heal Me
I'm Not a Robot
Pinocchio
Bring it On, Ghost
Psychopath Diary
the Tale of Nokdu
Life on Mars
Defendant
anything that's just got such an outlandish premise and doesn't really try and pay attention to the plot holes and doesn't necessarily try and contain a deeper message for me is just the "fun" factor watch.

Haha right? I was a really huge fan of his and then just didn't hit it off with some of his later works. I was among a severe minority that enjoyed Entertainer, but then wasn't even interested in Dr. John and Familiar Wife. I dropped both Adamas and the Devil Judge, despite both seeming like they'd be right up my alley.. Adamas I admit I may have dropped because the ending was spoinled for me haha

Just for fun watches come up whenever I'm rewatching. And the most culprit here is Mr. Queen.
What am I watching just for fun? Perfect Marriage Revenge fitted this bill so much last year. While I delved into it with all seriousness, I didn't expect it to be so much fun, to be something I'd also watch for the fun of it.
My current just for fun is My Happy Ending. After letting it settle in that this isn't the kind of central story I was expecting, why not just breeze through it like that. That's how I managed through the premiere episodes. I've not picked up this week's, I'm not excited to see any progression or chemistry that is going on air for as long as the FL's home is in the ICU. Until they fix it, it is a fun watch. If it remains so, it'll remain a fun watch till the end.
Other fun watches...The Story of Park's Marriage Contract (fun read), Our Blooming Youth and The Matchmakers. While i didn't watch the latter, it was fun reading the recaps and following through with it.
Moving - This one was a fun read.
Whenever the recaps came up, the weeks whose recaps intrigued me were the ones I went back to watch.
Now I really wished I kept watching TSoPMC because of the flesh they've added to Hye-sook's character. I don't want to just read about it, I want to see it.

The premiere episodes were sources of fun bouts.
And the part where she bowed once instead of thrice at her wedding, thier first proper wedding night and her pregnancy check results. Mr. Queen was a lot of fun.

Maybe Melting Me Softly fits this category. As I was watching it, I kept thinking "this is so dumb" but I was also laughing during it. I also thought how people would probably complain about this or that which made me think it was good that I was just watching it without other people's criticisms affecting how I viewed the show.
I even had moments of rewatching scenes cause it was just so dumb or funny to me such as when the mother suggested the frozen couple should have a baby then let his (twiced divorced, childless) sister raise it so the frozen couple go travel and doing their "youthful" adventures.
Love Song for Illusion's first episode seemed fun to me. Specifically Ak Hee and The girl's moments. Her instant sizing up of Hyun and while he was baffled, she left him with instructions for her garment. Also when she landed on him, I *think* she landed on his cojones and yet the way the scene is shown, it's like it's supposed to be this love at first sight, dreamy kind of moment. Ak Hee's "you're making Ak Hee sad". It's just all so weirdly interesting to me (so far. It *has* only been the one episode).

Chief Kim! Yes, there is more to this show than fun, but overall it was a big fun ride. I could watch Junho and Namgoong Min bromancing it out all day, and even besides the bromance it had sooo many hilarious funny moments.
And I'm still in awe about the fact that this is a show about accounting! And still, it's fun.
Then the already mentioned Zombie Detective, and of course Perfect Marriage Revenge.

This will have to be Perfect Marriage Revenge and Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938. Both were fun but for difderent reasons.
PMR was a makjang-lite cracktastic drama. While Tale 1938 was a fun trip to the past with my favorite gumiho brothers and their supernatural buddies.

I usually don't watch dramas only "for the fun". Maybe I should do it more often. I want fun but I also want quality in other aspects 😅
A friend of mine watches lots of "bad" mini c-dramas (10 or 15 minutes each episode) because she says she has a blast and now she is addicted to them.

There are many dramas where I get too invested in the OTP and want things to work out for them badly, ex. CLOY.
And then there are dramas where I 'know' they will end up together, but look at the angst and all that comes with it as part of the package and just go with the flow. Some dramas that I had the most fun with in 2023 are
King The Land
Destined with you (I had zero problem with the idiotic writing of the heroine, I was there for the chemistry and it was great fun)
Perfect marriage Revenge (only partly, it was too much of a makjang for me, but one day I was sick and off from work, I ended up binge watching 4 episodes of the drama, while live commenting about it to my friend via texts, it was fun because I was laughing at myself watching that ridiculous drama)
In 2022, it was Business Proposal - it was pure joy, nothing serious. I even became a fan of Ahn Hyo Seop in spite of his very bad acting skills.
Also currently enjoying My Demon - I love the eye candy leads and I totally don't care about the logic, as long as they make the process fun. Second leads were annoying me, thankfully they fixed it this week, and its all great fun again.

FUN(NY) you say?!
Dear 2024 pls bring us some much needed laughter
Give us fantasy & mythology (TALE OF THE NINE TAILED 1938)
With a dash of office hijinks (GAUS ELECTRONICS)
And a hint of romantic comedy (S**TING STARS)
Perhaps a little flavour of slapstick (WELCOME TO WAIKIKI S1&2)
And maybe some time travel too (THE BEST HIT)
Let’s not forget the family element (HIGH KICK S1-S3)
Or the nostalgia factor (ANSWER ME 1997, 1994 & 1988)
And of course we have to include makjang! (PERFECT MARRIAGE REVENGE)
So whatcha got in store for us 2024-kdramaland?!
