News bites: December 14, 2023

Esom, Ahn Jae-hong

  • The promos have kicked off for TVING’s upcoming comedy LTNS (a.k.a. Long Time No Sex), showcasing the first script reading stills of Ahn Jae-hong (Mask Girl) and Esom (Black Knight) as our strapped-for-cash married pair. In what sounds like a fun spin, the two decide they want to be “bad” and start chasing down cheating couples to blackmail them for money. The series is expected to release in January 2024. • The first poster has rolled in for Disney+’s action A Shop for Killers (previously The Murderer’s Shopping Mall), with Lee Dong-wook (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) as the mysterious owner, who bequeaths the business to niece Kim Hye-joon (Connect). Opening their doors on January 17, the novel adaptation also stars Seo Hyun-woo (Celebrity), Jo Han-seon (Stove League), and Park Ji-bin (Blind). [Sports Donga]

  • JTBC announced another drama for 2024, lining up the romance A Prefabricated Family with Hwang In-yub (Why Her), Jung Chae-yeon (The Golden Spoon), and Bae Hyun-sung (Miraculous Brothers) headlining the cast. Adapted from the hit Chinese drama Go Ahead, production for the Korean remake is led by PD Kim Seung-ho (Joseon Attorney, Twenty Five Twenty One) and writer Hong Shi-young. [News1]
  • Jung Hae-in (D.P. 2) confirmed casting for tvN’s rom-com Mom’s Friend’s Son, playing the classic, swoon-worthy CEO. The only smear to his name, of course, is some past childhood incident involving our heroine – potentially played by Jung So-min (Alchemy of Souls). Filming is set to begin early next year, with plans to broadcast in the latter half of 2024. [News1]

  • Seducing us with dark, moody posters, all eyes are on Jo Jung-seok (Hospital Playlist 2) and Shin Se-kyung (Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun) in tvN’s Captivating the King, warning us that love fuels life while hate fuels death in the tagline. With PD Jo Nam-gook (The Good Detective) at the helm and writing by Kim Sun-deok (The Crowned Clown), the fictional sageuk will be coming to our screens on January 21. [Sports Chosun]
  • It’s a busy week for tvN, with promos also continuing for Marry My Husband, where I cry for the innocent cake that did nothing wrong in the matching new poster and video teaser. But Park Min-young (Love in Contract) has indeed been wronged and with the fantasy rom-com premiering on January 1, her New Year’s resolution will be revenge. [MBC]

Long watchlist candidates: Long time no sex, A prefabricated family and Mom’s friend’s son. I will be interested to see if this make it to the what we’re watch and enjoying list in 2024.

LTNS - Ooh! A "Microhabitat" reunion. Why are they always a poor couple? Lol

The posters for Captivating the King made me want to look at both again. But not yet sure if I will watch it.

I also like Lee Dong Wook's drama, A Shop for Killers.

What in the drama world are they trying to concoct with 1.

Captivating the King is slowly captivating me with those camera angles. It's perfect.

Finally, a different picture vibe for Park Min-young. The red is red. January 1 come quick.

I planned to watch Mom's Friend's Son. But i don't know what they had in mind with that title.

I think "mom's friend's son" is a legit thing in Korea! My understanding was that it was a way of referring to someone who was annoyingly perfect, and makes everyone else look bad in comparison. Like that son that your mom's friend always brags about and that your mom ends up comparing you to when you bring home a bad test grade or something.

And there's no daughter equivalent?

Sigh, never easy being a girl/woman.

Too much excitement for an upcoming drama didn’t pay out in 2023. So I’m only here to leave a *well measured little cheer* for a reappearance of JUNG HAE-IN on my screen next year.

Well measured little cheer is the best way to go. Even to Junho's new drama.

2. LTNS sounds like a total hoot! If they pull it off, it should be hilarious!

3. A SHOP FOR KILLERS sounds promising. Let's see how it shapes up.

1 and 2 sounds interesting. The rest is boring and repetitive, with the same actors over and over, most of them with their faces improved by plastic surgeons.

In all fairness, it is the same in most of the English-speaking movie star universe. I read recently in an interview with Annette Bening that she gets praised often for being a rare example of an actor who hasn’t had plastic surgery (or surgeries as relevant).

I was skeptical about LTNS until I saw a promo video a few months back. It looks fun and different. Plus it's short haha.

I'm all in for Mom's Friend's Son and Captivating the King on the basis of the casts alone. The stories may not feel overly fresh but these are some great pairings.

Love in Contract was sufficiently awful to put me off a PMY drama for a while, and I say that having (apparently) been one of the few beanies who actually liked Forecasting Love and Weather.

@tccolb with another great line... "where I cry for the innocent cake that did nothing wrong in the matching new poster and video teaser"

I read that the cake put on 5 pounds of icing for that role, only to be destroyed in the promo!

The included poster actually has the following in Hangeul: “The killers shopping mall (Konglish usage). So the new poster remains the same but Disney has changed has changed the English title.

1. I love Esom but this does not sound fun. Let's see if PD can make it work and remove the shadow of Microhabitat from my head.

2. LDW always has my interest.

3. Hwang In-youp does have my interest despite Why Her. Apparently he took lessons for romantic scenes in that drama from Ji Chang-wook himself. Why ... just why? Anyway would like to support him. Please do not let the original work down.

4. Yay! **in normal conversational tone to temper excitement**

5. I never knew this is the sageuk I wanted. Hwaiting!

6. Society for mistreatment of cakes in K-drama needs to step up and put an end to this cruelty. PMY needs to eat more cake to be healthy.
