A game of secrets and spies in tvN’s Captivating the King

The first teaser has landed for tvN’s upcoming fictional sageuk Captivating the King (previously Sejak, the Enchanted), where our title’s king Jo Jung-seok (Hospital Playlist 2) battles baduk and love against our heroine Shin Se-kyung (Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun).

Opening on the baduk board, the video begins when Lee In (Jo Jung-seok) was still a prince and had found a friend in a person who called themselves Kang Mong-woo (Shin Se-kyung). Sitting across from each other, an intense Lee In places his tile to begin the baduk match. But as we learn through the teaser, Mong-woo – a.k.a. Kang Hee-soo – isn’t the only one with secrets and a tangled game of deceit was set into motion as well.

The trailer then jumps ahead to the future where we re-meet our newly bearded and smexy hero, who now commands the throne as Joseon’s king. Not to be outdone, Hee-soo dons pretty new garbs as well and enters the palace with a revenge plan to fulfill. However, as the continuing captions and voiceovers reveal, we’re in for a cruel mess of fate as our pair both become more captivated by the other.

With the promos focusing on our two leads thus far, hopefully we’ll soon be seeing the rest of the main cast, which includes Lee Shin-young (CEO-dol Mart) and Park Ye-young (Summer Strike). The sageuk romance also stars Sohn Hyun-joo (The Good Detective 2), Jo Sung-ha (Our Blooming Youth), Jang Young-nam (High Cookie), and Choi Dae-hoon (Curtain Call).

Directed by PD Jo Nam-gook (The Good Detective) with Kim Sun-deok (The Crowned Clown) writing, Captivating the King is slated to air in tvN’s weekend slot, kicking off with Episodes 1 and 2 releasing back-to-back on Sunday, January 21.

Oh Jo Jung-Seok looks so good as a King!!!

Not a big fan of Shin Se-Kyung, but I prefer her in sageuk than modern dramas.

Even better as an assassin in " The Fatal Encounter."

I still don't get this casting. From Han Ye-ri to SSK?

Not a fan of Shin Se-kyung. But having Jo Jung-seok means this drama is a must watch. But why the beard, though?

according to confucionism it was prohibited to cut your hair, including beard. which is why in saeguks the older men always have long wispy beards and everybody had loooooong hair.

Jo Jung-seok, Jo Sung-ha, Jang Young-nam,Sohn Hyun-joo!

I've only seen Sohn Hyun-joo in one sageuk before (Hansan: Rising Dragon). I'm glad he is in another.

Here is another (enjoyable) historical drama that Sohn Hyun-joon appeared in: THE TRUE COLORS OF GANG AND CHEOL from KBS Drama Special Series Season 2 (2012). It is available on youtube:

Being a Oh Man-seok fan this drama was recommended to me (way back when lol) by @wishfultoki.
It was unusual in the sense that Oh Man-seok reprises a role from 2011 where he (also Song Hyun-joo) played police detectives in a contemporary setting. It was SPECIAL TASK FORCE MSS from KBS’s Drama Special Series (2010/11).
Also enjoyable and available on youtube.

Coming attractions. SEJAK will be a pass. Since I am watching GKW which will run until the end of February 2024 the only other saguekI plan to follow (if available on a legal US stream) is Honey Lee’s FLOWER THAT BLOOMS AT NIGHT (12 eps) Jan. 12- Feb. 17, 2024. That will be plenty of simultaneous sageuk episodes for me.

As it should. Don't mess with sageuk titles. 😂 That goes for the GORYEO KHITAN WAR too.

I forgot about THE TRUE COLORS OF GANG AND CHEOL. Thank you!
Before Cho Seung-woo there was Oh Man-seok! Musicals and dramas. " The Secret Romantic Guesthouse" is still on my list.

Wait. Is that Jo Jung-seok in the red royal robes? His manliness is freaking accentuated further that I couldn't recognize him at 3rd glance.

Jo is such a charismatic actor. I'm really looking forward to seeing this pairing with Shin. She comes across as quite reserved in most of her roles, but I think that works well with sageuk and in particular I think will be very interesting matched against Jo's vibrancy.

Hmmm... I should clarify by "reserved" that I mean she is poised and elegant, which works well in more traditional sageuk roles.

Is it just me or this show really kinda popped out of nowhere? I recall vaguely hearing about it ONCE before and now we've already at teasers stage?
P.S. What a terrible attempt at cross-dressing.

I wonder why they ALWAYS do that. Most k-actresses are pretty enough to still look good even with a subtle nude makeup that fits male hanbok and doesn't scream about their gender, but nope.

Oh this will be soooooo good! Jo Jun-seok ALWAYS brings it! And I didn't used to like Shin Se Kyung, but she is great in sageuk and so much better than she was early on in her career. This is totally up my alley!
