Drama viewership ratings for the week of October 16-22, 2023

Things are topsy-turvy this week, with a super light weekday schedule, owned by ENA… who also got so destroyed last week with their new Saturday-Sunday slot for Evilive that they pulled a fast one and will now air the drama in a new-new Sunday-Monday slot instead.

As for our weekend, Arthdal Chronicles finishes with a decent finale jump, but overall performed middling. 7 Escape is also performing a little lower than (I) expected, as nothing — not even Strong Girl Nam-soon — can counter the lure of our tragic Joseon romance.

Tragic and epic saeguk basically beats everything, including a makjang and a comedy. Back in 2021-2022, The Red Sleeve managed to achieve a 15% rating in two or three years. MBC certainly made the right decision in producing this saeguk that moved the hearts of so many Korean audiences in tears...

And some Beanies too. I’m so happy for My Dearest. Do you think it’s only because it’s a historical sageuk? If so, they should be a dime a dozen but we get many fluffy fusion ones instead.

I wish Twinkling Watermelon and LYOL were doing better tho.

I'm also happy for MY DEAREST.
My favorite drama at the moment.
For me the perfect mix of great actors, costumes and emotions.

A rare historical saeguks makes it even more precious and rare. Thus, mbc decides to produce and air this drama..this year.

Some may grow tired with the heaps of fluffy saeguks, and couldn't wait to watch the meatier and more emotional saeguk like this. These fluffy saeguks, many it may seem, mostly do not contribute much in terms of ratings.

I like the description: ‘fluffy’ sageuk. I find it preferable to ‘fusion’ sageuk which frankly I never knew what that meant.

That being said I have been sageuk fee since MBC’s JOSEON ATTORNEY (Viki US) ended airing in May.
I am eagerly awaiting KBS’s 32 episode GORYEO-KHITAN WAR.
Increasing availability angst since KBS has not yet announced a legal US stream.

Many historical dramas can easily fit it there these days, thus these days: I will just opt fluffy and heavy saeguks.

Epic sageuks has always been MBC's bread and butter. I'm glad they are returning to their roots and breaking their rating curse.

"Strong Girl Nam-soon" is a cable show, so I don't know if "My Dearest" on a free public channel beats that one, even at 7.3%. What do you think?

Required fields are marked *

A rating is a rating....even if it is 11.7% or 7.3%. Even if it is on a public channel or a cable show. So yes... it beats it. That's what the admin or whoever that makes this post thinks (read, not even Strong Gil Nam Soon can counter.....).

Anyway, Nam Soon still emerged as the winner when it comes to the most watched cable drama during the weekend.

Well....it is a free-for-all channel versus a paid channel so there is nothing much we can do. And, fantasy/superhero dramas are a big thing in Korea, with exception of Moving. You can look at the ratings for The Uncanny Counter and several other superhero Kdramas previously.

*Not a big thing

Well, it is basically Gone with the wind, so it had good material to work with

Yeap, it scores on all these elements, except on the realness/factual part. But, it is excellent for a fictional epic saeguk.

Looking at the ratings, feels like MBC really overestimated how popular A Good Day to Be a Dog would be. The programming schedule for it certainly won't help.

It is unfortunate that A Good Day to Be a Dog drew the unlucky schedule slot impacted by preemptions.

As a viewer , I would have preferred the whole series being released ala Netflix.
The broadcaster doesn’t see it that way though 😪
I would almost recommend a binge watch once the show is over .

You're right. It'd work more as a sweet, cute binge. Doesn't feel like the type of show which'll have people on tenterhooks for weeks let alone months.

It's gonna get worse as the plot progresses, too. I remember how awful it was waiting for one new ep per week with the webcomic!

At least My Dearest had enough episodes air in a row that gave them a chance to pick up momentum story-wise. A week off early on (ep 3) is not great

5

reply

Required fields are marked *

And I read somewhere there might be another pre-emption on Nov. 8 so another delay for Ep. 5...

3

Would totally worked better as a binge. It's interesting what gets picked up as a full-series drop vs what doesn't.

I guess it's good that it's being picked up at all. I'm noticing that a bunch of recent-ish dramas appear to be filmed in the first half of the year. I wonder how many finished dramas are waiting for an air date and just agreeing to any airtime, even if the circumstances are crappy.

It used to be that dramas had the first couple of episodes filmed and then the rest was a mad scramble to get the episodes out in time for airing. I wonder if Netflix changed that, since having it all ready would make it more attractive for being picked up by Netflix, Disney, etc..

I did remember reading an article that shows were getting cancelled mid-production and that the network channels were reluctant to allot too many slots to dramas leading to much fewer dramas being released this year compared to last year.

A GOOD DAY TO BE A DOG is certainly a sweet drama, but nothing that will keep you emotionally invested days later. With one episode a week, it can be easy to forget, especially with the break this week.

9

I have an opposite opinion - to me it seems that MBC doesn't give a single damn about the show and treats it as a dead time slot's filler, which led to results that we're seeing now.

Required fields are marked *

Sounds about right, but when was the last time we've seen SK network learning from their mistakes?

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I think it was an experiment for MBC to dip their toes back in the mid-week timeslots without fully committing and they specifically chose the show because they hoped with the webcomic’s popularity and Cha Eun-woo’s popularity it would get an audience one way or another, and if it failed in the ratings hopefully it would still do well on streaming.

I guess we’ll see how that decision fares…

4

Oh that could be true too. I thought since they'd been promoting the show for a couple of months and had it scheduled all the way to January, they probably had faith in it.

It looks like the break in broadcasting had zero impact on the upward momentum of of My Dearest.

A compelling story with great actors and good writing will always trump shock value and popular idols. (and i say this as a fan of makjang dramas and some popular idol-actors)

Namgoong Min's consistency will never cease to amaze me (both him and Kim Hye-soo)

A break in schedule is harmless if the actors can act, the writer and producers do their job well. Relying on the pretty boy looks doesn't necessarily serve the drama well, regardless if the drama is shown on Monday or Sunday.

Watching NamGoong Min in 14, I thought god how tired he must be and yet he never flags in his performance. Then I wondered who else could have done this role so well. Maybe Kim Nam Gil? I’m so glad the role went to NGM as he is hitting it out of the park.

Yes, and we got great performances from him in those roles. He makes a chilling villain which I never expected!

2

You are absolutely right, NKM definitely laboured to raise himself up towards the ML category where he is now firmly entrenched.
Someone as talented as him cannot be relegated in the shadows for too long.
He has shined in each and every role he has done and was always eye-catching.
We, his fans are so happy to see him being able to give full rein to his talent and express himself freely.

3

I'm not saying he's of the same caliber as these actors but y'all mentioning only 1 person fill this type of role in a satisfying way made me curious.

What type of actor(s) do you think are Ok Taecyeon and Song Joong Ki? I just had Taecyeon in mind cause I was thinking of Heartbeat for some reason and then I thought of Reborn Rich haha

Required fields are marked *

Hmm, interesting choices.

Personally I'm rather fond of Taecyeon but honestly before Heart ❤ Beat I would never even have considered him for My Dearest.
I think he is still a little "raw" but then in this set-up and with a supporting PD, who knows this may have been his breakthrough role!!
The vibe would definitely have been different also Ahn Eun-jin would probably have to "act-down" so as not to overpower our favorite vampire. 🤣 🤣 🤣 Can't stop laughing while imagining that petite girl "overpowering" the 2PM beast mode Taecyeon if she actually gave full rein to her acting prowess.

Song Joong-ki, hmm let's see.
- has the acting chops,
- does sageuk well,
- is good in tragic scenes.
In fact ticks all the boxes for Jang-hyun. It's just that I'm not feeling it.

Well I'm just glad I was NOT the casting director. 😅 My list just has Namkoong Min and Kim Nam-gil ... or Taecyeon just for laughs (because I ❤ him) or just shut the production down for lack of the ML. 😭

A main lead is usually the main factor behind why people watch the drama, who will be spend most of the time appearing in 8,10, 12, 16 or 20 episodes. There will be a strong emotional impact when it comes to the main lead. Think what will happen if Vincenzo dies, instead of to Han Seok. What will happen to Woo Young Woo didn't become a lawyer and end up as a failure or Yi San didn't get to become the king

@britney

1

I can think of Jang Hyuk, Hyun Bin, Cho Seung Woo and Ji Sung...the actors who has the looks and charm to play the ML. And yes, the experience of acting in a saeguk definitely counts too. The role doesn't suit someone who is fresh from saeguk or a heavy genre.

@seeker @loveblossom @peiyeelai @db-staff Now I wish this could be a [drama chat] topic cause I'm curious what makes people think of certain actors as leads, co leads, and second leads

Sidenote: this remindes me of the webtoon Bitten Contract. A lead actor was beyond livid that he had been downgraded to a second male lead and having to "highlight other characters"

Cha Seung Won has been a male lead, a co lead, a part of an ensemble and I don't think people less of him.

5

@Britney, I think the Cast Away threads do just that.

I agree with you a good actor shines irrespective of the length of their roles.
It is just that as an ML one is literally the face of the drama and perhaps bears the burden of the success or not of the drama a little more.

In the comments for My Lovely Liar is was mentioned time and again how our beleaguered ML, Hwang Min-hyun was "out-acted by almost the entire ensemble cast.

There were many including myself who said he needs more time and experience to be able to fully justify heading a drama and hoping he does better next time.

If one compares MBC's youtube and twitter accounts, AGDTAD is way ahead on twitter and MD is cruising on youtube when it comes to visualization. It's just that the youngsters prefer to watch it online and they are the ones that know about it from webtoons. MD has also a lot of international viewers but I assume that not in the same age category. For MBC is a win-win, age and platforms.

Wow, Evilive isn't doing good at all. Is it because of the dark subject matter? I don't watch the show so I know nothing about it except it has some kind of evil seduction.

I don't know how to feel about A Good Day to be a Dog because I don't watch it but the one criticism I saw about it was the poster wasn't surprised cause of Eun Woo's lack of acting range or expressions (or something like that; I don't remember).
If this is the case, I'm a bit surprised. I have seen some videos saying he's improved his acting (I don't see that but whatever) so I thought more people would be watching.

I saw that My Dearest is listed a current favorite so these numbers aren't surprising.

It's sad that The Kidnapping Day didn't at least make it to 5% because it's really a good show with heart.

Twinkling Watermelon is a good show but it also as a low key vibe that might not immediately grab a viewer's attention. I still think it deserves better.

I don't think Cha Eun-woo is bad per se, but I do think the show would have benefitted from an actor who's more skilled. It's extremely difficult to convey emotion in a character who's pretty closed off. There are actors who could pull it off better and I'm not sure he's one of them.

I also think that being able to act in a romance is different from being able to act in another type of genre. Even some very good actors are not great at acting like they're falling in love.
