Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (September 23, 2023)
by DB Staff
So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…
missvictrix
Destined With You: To see how I feel about this drama, just read what @dramaddictally wrote below. It’s just everything I want from a K-drama right now, and the hodge-podge plot is my jam.
My Lovely Boxer: With only one episode this week it was a bit hard to keep the momentum going, and it’s made me realize that a) I really love our two leads working together, not apart and b) I might just wait and watch the last three episodes together. This is a narrative that’s great to sink into, with characters I don’t want to let go of, so I’ll need to do it all at once or not at all. (Aside: Jae-min, please leave the plot, stat. I loathe you.)
Unit
Currently covering: Destined With You
My Lovely Liar: Is it really over? *Cries in denial* More than the story itself, I absolutely loved the DoSol couple, and those cuties are my fav OTP this year. I didn’t have any expectations in the beginning, but boy, they made me feel things. Their interactions were just so natural and relaxing, and while they didn’t have over the top skinship scenes, the simple ones like her sleeping on his lap and him casually stroking her head had me curling my toes in glee. The way I totally folded when they began to call each other “Oppa” and “Sol-hee-a” was unreal, and I really, really loved the proposal — even though I wasn’t expecting it. Did I mention how much I loved that Do-ha struggled with cooking? All I could think of whenever he was in the kitchen was, “Finally, a male lead who is not a cooking expert!” Lol. I didn’t like her parents getting back together, but that doesn’t take anything away from the show for me. It was a big source of comfort for me throughout its run, and I’m going to miss seeing Hwang Min-hyun and Kim So-hyun on my screen.
Dramaddictally
Destined With You: I clearly met this drama in a past life. There’s no other way to explain my undying adoration for it. The heroine is so charming, I’d follow her story anywhere, and I’ve long been under the spell of our hero. (See? Spells do work.) Sorry SF9, but we’ll take him!
My Lovely Boxer: Oops, how did I not realize this is only a 12-episode drama? Here I thought we were only about halfway through our story, but the truth is we’re almost done! On one hand, good — less chance of anything veering off course. On the other, no! How am I going to say goodbye to these characters? Our female lead is proving to be one of the greats.

My Lovely liar: It ended, I got my bean. I think everything important has been said beautifully by other beanies, so we can forget about this drama.
Destined with You: SIGH, I don’t really care for this drama. The things I do like are the 2ML, not because I want him with FL, but because I find him endearing. I also like the red hand and I am glad it is back. Finally, I love the beanie engagement and rationales. You guys are awesome.
The Killing Vote: So they have lost me a little bit. Why did Seok Joo kill the clearly mentally disabled child. There is no way he could have done it alone. This isn’t Of Mice and Men where we don’t understand mental disabilities, so why did he kill that boy who clearly had no sense of what he did. We now know who actually did it. How does Ji Hoon fit into this? How is he related to Seok Joo, this is what I am interested in, I don’t really care about the killing vote anymore.
Moving: AWWWWWWWW. That was a delightfully, violent, and sweet show. Family is important. My only sadness is they didn’t show Bongseok and Huisoo together at the end.
Song of Bandits: I was bored, which sucks because I was looking forward to it.
Arthdal Chronicles: The horse is gone, SIGH. The show is fine, but it is missing the joyful nonsense from the first one.

You can drop mine. I have Rowoon seared on my retina.
@kafiyah-bello I 💯 agree with you. Half the charm of DWY are the Beanies, no, more! I think the fan wall has twice, thrice, more? comments than the recap. And it’s still going strong!

@indyfan I think my most favourite thing to come out of this drama is the different and creative ways we're all expressing our squeeing over Rowoon/Shin-yu/both. Some absolutely hilarious lines, and a part of me hopes that this somehow makes it on the radar of the Rowoon PR squad and he's made to read these out loud one day 😂
'Seared on my retina' is my new favourite for sure 😆

No-freaking-way, @indyfan. Yours are priority ONE.
Here I was, thinking that I was being all coy, like Hong-jo, dragging my platform heels in the dust, finger in teeth, “Oh, which will I chooooose??” And then everyone would clamor, “Oh, Seon-ha, please do all of them for us, we beseech you!!!”
Sigh. I’ve no internet aegyo. [That link, btw, is the first image you get when you google-check how to spell aegyo because you can never get it right.]

LOL. Have I mentioned Hong-Jo’s charm is kinda lost on me @attiton? All the aegyo in the world really (however “spelled” :).
But fear not, yours is not. Tho I’m sure you say it to all the lovely Beanies, I’m still blushing. Pls make mine Seon-ha. Just one. Pretty pls.
And @lapislazulii Oh god. Can you imagine? How do these stars stay grounded? Tho I don’t know if “seared on my retina” is the most romantic of the lot. 😂

Ji Hoon is the kid that Narae was close to at the orphanage they visit. Professor was set to adopt him and his daughter was supposed to meet him on the day of her disappearance. He appears to also be invested in the capture of NaRae's killer. It is still unclear what he knows.

WATCHING
Behind Your Touch Ep 12/16: My fave for 2023 nuff said.
My Happy Marriage (Jdrama) Ep 12: Another favorite. 1 20-min episode per week is torture.
A Time Called You Ep 8/12: Am I the only one not feeling the slightest flutter from the leads? I think I should already be squeeing (especially I’m a sucker for 90’s/early 2000 young love) but I am not and I wonder why.😩 I am not sold with the love angle of the leads, but I realized I really like it when the three leads are just being platonic.
By ep6, I was still not enjoying my watch but I am curious about the plot so I decided to stay and just utilize the 1.25 speed. Good thing things were becoming interesting by ep7, with the murder and ML’s time travel. And heck, just a few minutes into Rowoon and AHS’s scenes (and with just them casually talking), why was I lowkey squeeing? I was rooting for them. They have more chemistry together than AHS and JYB imo.
The Light In Your Eyes Ep 3/12: Han Ji-min and PD Kim Sok-yun just officially became my favorites because of BYT, so it was an easy decision for me to start this. And what a bonus to see Son Ho-jun here. I’m loving it from episode 1.
Familiar Wife Ep 4/16: Not that I’m obsessed with HJM lol, it’s just that Netflix put this up on my feed with the big LEAVING SOON so I lowkey panicked and started it. It’s very interesting and I’m enjoying it a lot. It’s a nice rom-com with a heart. I also like their approach to time travel.
DROPPED
Beautiful Gong-shim Ep 10/20: I loved the first few episodes but around ep5, it lost its spark for me when the focus shifted from the OTP’s cute interactions to the ML’s soap operaish story as the long lost grandson of a conglomerate. *sigh* I only managed to watch until ep10 because I’ve been watching it with my boyfriend, and I have considered pushing myself further to finish it. I thought just 6 more episodes, so that the 10 eps I’ve seen won’t be in vain. But then I realized spending 6 more hours for a drama I don’t enjoy will be more of a waste than the 10 hours I already spent. And that’s it, I told my bf “You can watch it without me”. lol
(I thought I should check, and I found out just now that it’s a 20-episode drama, not 16. WTFFF!!! I cannot! Good call that I dropped already.)
ON-HOLD
Hi! Bye! Mama! Ep 6/16: This drama is lovely. Just not in the mood to continue for now but will surely pick this up again.
Unlock My Boss Ep 1: It’s good! Putting on hold to watch with bf.
Moving Ep 1: Very promising. On hold - must watch with bf.
(Nope, not clingy. Just saving the dramas I know will be right up his alley for our drama watch bonding. lol)

I am with you on Beautiful Gong-shim. The first episodes felt like "Yayh! This is going to be a favorite!", but then it spiralled into a much too normal story.
If you enjoy the MLs wackiness enough to want it also without any romance to speak of (though I have spoken of it, at length) I very much recommend Chief Kim, where I guarantee you he doesn't suddenly just turn into someone's rich, obedient grandchild.

My Lovely Liar: I really enjoyed this drama. Sure, it could have been written better and more evenly, and they really didn’t have to do that to the lone LGBTQIA+ character, but there were still so many things that I thought were great. I’m glad I watched it, and it has earned its bean back from me.
The Uncanny Counter 2: In the end, this was better than I was expecting it to be. It certainly doesn’t compare to the first season, and the emotional beats don’t always hit the way they wanted them to, but I thought it was an interesting direction for them to go, and I like the idea of them constantly having to innovate and adapt as the evil spirits get more powerful also. I was happy to get to hang out with the characters again, and I am so glad Han-ul made it to his wedding!
The Killing Vote: It’s become a pattern for me to watch this on Saturday morning, but I’ll be in the hangout later!
The Song of the Bandits: Kim Nam-gil in his *Aragorn Era*. I only had time to watch the first episode so far but I’m sold hahaha! They were veering pretty serious until Lee Yoon went wild on those bandits in their hideout, and then the character intros at the end of the episode were so fun! Excited to watch more.
Moving: This is definitely the most addicted my partner has ever been to a kdrama. I don’t have to do any convincing that we should watch it, he doesn’t mind the weird sounds I make when someone’s story is adorable, and he’s now willing to watch almost anything else with Ryu Seung-ryeong. I’m calling it a win. Only a few more episodes left! (And I proooomise I’m trying to find time to go back and read the weecaps and comment. I’m barely keeping up with everything as it is, but I’m working on it!)

My husband has watched about 40 dramas with me (I have watched many more on my own) and I'm realizing his favorite genres are slice-of-life and rom-coms. I think he really liked Yumi's cells 1&2, Misaeng, Start-up, Navillera, It's ok to not be ok, Hospital Playlist, Flower of Evil, C-drama Reset, C-drama Fake it till you make it...
And he didn't like Youth of May, Uncanny Counter, Our Beloved Summer, Duty after school, Train...
It's hit or miss with him, so it can be a bit stressful for me, because I'm the one who decides the next drama we will watch together.

Yay on getting your spouse to watch shows too - I've only convinced my husband to watch 3 k-dramas from start to finish, even though he really liked all of them (Queen Seondeok, My Liberation Notes, Stranger). I'm going to keep trying though - we do have a date to watch Stranger season 2 once my life gets less hectic.

I don’t have a “significant other” to watch with, but I have recommended some of my favorite Kdramas to friends and family. I figured we could at least discuss them via text, email, phone calls, and our occasional get-togethers. I’ve gotten a couple of people to watch one show: one of my brothers and his wife watched Mr. Sunshine and my neighbors watched Extraordinary Attorney Woo. They loved the shows (or so they told me), but so far the only one who has gone back for more is my sister-in-law, who adored Misty.
I stopped giving suggestions for further forays into the genre—I got tired of the furtive eye-rolls and could practically hear their inner voices saying “There she goes again babbling about her Kdramas”! 🙄 I don’t even mention the great kimchi at my local Costco.
So glad I can talk about Kdramas with my Dramabeans friends!

@babylilo It's funny about friends - I reeled in my two besties into K-drama. I have a large group of friends and now a days we have heavy K-drama reference courtsey me! LOL! So much so that they are planning a pajama party planned around K-dramas for my birthday LOL! Last weekend we went to a Karaoke bar for the first time and LOVED it.

I love this thread - I am secretely convinced that my husband loves rom-coms but will only attatch to ones that have some mystery or 'fighting' or historical (to my utter glee he got as attached to Yi Hwan and Jay Yi's story as I did from Our Blooming Youth but didn't like anything about Strong Woman, sigh!). Right now he is loving My Dearest (historical, lots of gore, his type of show) and Behind Your touch. But he definitely does not like slice of life or pure rom coms (he dozed off in Our Beloved summer which I absolutely adore, and was impatient with Business Proposal and didn't watch the end with me, only to watch it when he was travelling haha!) He fell in love with Eun Bin in Attorney Woo, so I am guessing Diva will be our next watch together besides Dr Slump (he is a PHS fan too)

@indyfan: For my husband, Attorney Woo was his first one. I had a tough time trying to convince him, and when he is not into it, he makes these annoying jokes that I get totally antsy about (like, he will tease - 'Are you watching Khamzanmida/Oraboni again? - insert eyeroll) but Attorney Woo reeled him in, and since then he has watched tons of historicals with me. After EAW, Mr. Queen and Our Blooming Youth have been his favourites. So, it's a matter of finding something that will initially click.
It's valid for all of us, I guess. My son could not get me to watch Squid Games he was enthralled with, because I was just not into shows back then, and now I have not only caught up, but I can reel off names of the actors, much to his amazement, hehe!
My husband will something skip because he does not want to read subtitles, so Netflix dubbing helps. Under the Queen's Umbrella we watched dubbed and it was great.

That’s quite impressive. He sounds quite open-minded. Mine thinks they are like American soaps and refuses to even try. (And yes, some are very soapy but not all!) I’ll have find someway to sneak in that gateway drama. Maybe a sports one with no/little romance, better yet a scandi-noir type. Hmm. Must research.

@indyfan Relentless whining? I've been watching Asian dramas for over a decade now and again, I've only got my husband to actually watch three. September 23, 2023 at 8:29 PM
@indyfan Scandi-noir, hmmm. What about Beyond Evil or Stranger? The latter might be too convoluted for a starter drama, but it's so damned great. Tracer might fit the bill, too. For sports-without-romance, it doesn't get any better than Stove League.

@indyfan For my husband, it's all about genre, but stars that he's sort of familiar with help also. We've been watching action movies (from lots of countries) together since we started dating, and both share a love of old-school Hong Kong kung-fu movies. So his intro was K-action movies. I think the first drama I got him to watch was Kingdom, which we both really liked, and he came out of it a Ju Ji-hoon fan, so then it was easier to get him to try other thing that JJH is in. Generally I have a better time convincing him to watch things that have a shorter episode count (another reason why Moving is exceptional) so it's not as much commitment, are at least partially action-based, and have at least one person in them that he will recognize. He doesn't mind other genres, but isn't super willing to commit to a 16 hour rom com for example, he'd much rather his rom coms be movie-length. I'm sure everyone is different, but this is what has worked for me! He still doesn't watch them very often, but I think I've gotten him to join me for 7 so far.

September 24, 2023 at 6:05 PM
@jls943 Thank you for sharing. How wise you were.
Believe it or not, I tried Kingdom (which I loved) but he couldn’t get over the historical costumes. So that’s when I tried Train to Busan (too slow for him 🙄) So I’ve given up on the zombie genre for now, and moving to the scandi-noir genre that he also loves. I was going to try Stranger per Elinor, but maybe I’ll try some K movies, keeping attn span in mind. The hardest block really is getting past the bias against K content.

His likes are unpredictable, but there are a few things I already know: he doesn't like watching bullying scenes (or students fighting, I guess he has watched so many in k-dramas that he gets bored with that kind of scenes), he doesn't like dark-police-corruption shows, he doesn't like over the top humour as in Waikiki, he doesn't like sageuks (but he enjoyed Live up to your name)...
So now here I am thinking of we should start Moving or not. Some months ago, we started Uncanny Counter 1 and he only looked at his mobile phone, he was totally uninterested in that drama. To say the truth, I ended dropping it after six episodes...

I think my husband enjoys rom-coms (Yumi, Hometown Cha, Start-up, Business Proposal...), even though there is no fantasy elements. And he likes to see normal people doing normal things, as in Misaeng or Fake It till you make it, so slice-of-life, office settings, costumbrist dramas... are probably successful.

I have to agree with your husband's likes and dislikes, sounds like a sensible drama viewer with good taste. you also are very observant and in tune with him. I find that it's hard to escape bullying/violent scenes even in my favorite dramas. but I guess it should be okay if it's limited to a few scenes and not the main subject of the drama. if he likes zombies, then I have recommend my favorite of the genre, Dark Hole. it's non stop thrilling action but with plenty of heart. and Fiery Priest for its wit and humor (he'll recognize Kim Nam Gil) I think he'll probably enjoy Moving. Or how about Tunnel starring Choi Jin Hyuk. Great thriller with beautifully done time travel element. These are just a few of the dramas off the top of my head.

I was bored (or annoyed) and sometimes nearly fell asleep during the last episodes. So many lost opportunities. Sigh. At least there were some cute moments (Oppa :-) ), some lovely football TV-watching... and they didn't forget Jazz bar Ajusshi. ❤️
Destined
I don't know if it was just my tiredness this week, but the show felt scattered and I got often confused about how and why we were where we were (and why were Shinyu and Nayeon STILL together? Wae??). The Joseon shots were beautiful though. And then the shocking reappearance of Red happened! 😱
I did enjoy all the funny we got (I want mooore!) and thank you, Secretary, for your existence, your comments and entrances are the highlights. 🙂

Cha Woong relaxing from his disgruntled stork persona as he warms up to the exuberant and straightforward FL and falls for her, is delightful. Their magic show together when she had to fill in was unexpectedly lovely, as was the "stakeout." I really like how their relationship has been progressing. This drama is warm, has a nice heart, and has gotten progressively sweeter AND funnier.👍
Mad Dog: (halfway through ep 5) Woo Do Hwan has eclipsed everything else in this drama to hold my whole focus. When he's not in a scene, my focus isn't either. And have I mentioned his lovely, lovely voice? This drama goes hard with the maudlin, which actually seems to short-circuit my pathos response, so I'm watching with more emotional detachment than I'm usually able to achieve. Nice!
C-dramas:
I started and got caught up with Parallel World over the past week. Y'all, I love it. I think I'm obsessed. The ML is a good man with a kind heart, the FL is cool and ruthless, and they're like the parents of their little band of adventurers. IT'S SO COOL. The OTP's relationship is lovely so far, and they communicate and tell each other things!! Love it.
After seeing (and loving) Sword Snow Stride earlier this year, I'm now slowly watching Joy of Life (through ep 15). I don't love it quite as much as Sword Snow Stride yet, but it's pretty darn awesome. That's largely due to the ML, played by Zhang Ruo Yun. I really, really like him - do Beanies have any other recommendations for dramas he's starred in? Anything else worth seeking out? And alternately, any other C-dramas similar to the three I mentioned here? Thank you! 😊

Oh I'd be ready to chat about Parallel World! I'm really interested to hear what you think of it. It's technically a contemporary fantasy, but it's really a classic adventure-fantasy structure where the main quest is to understand the self (*because of a classic trope*), and where each member of the adventure group has their own goals in the quest. Not all of the fantasy logic makes the most sense, but I don't care, because I'm fascinated by the characters. I DO think you're going to really like the OTP!

Glad you're enjoying Showtime Begins!! I'm also binging Parallel World and slow-watching Joy of Life. Zhang Ruo Yan caught my eye in Under the Microscope, so you should check it out. The actor who plays his friend/bodyguard in Joy of Life is also in Under the Microscope. It's a drama about discovering what looks like an accounting error and ends up being a very relevant commentary on government bureaucracy and special interests. Only 14 episodes.

Zhang Ruo Yun fan also here. In 2022 I subscribed to iQIYI specifically to watch ZRY (out from all those robes lol) in the contemporary police slice-of-life drama ORDINARY GREATNESS. Highly recommended. It is something along the lines of the 2018 police slice-of life kdrama LIVE (also highly recommended).
I have enjoyed ZRY’s UNDER THE MICROSCOPE (iQIYI), SSS (Viki), JOL (Viki) and MEDICAL EXAMINER: DR QIN (2016) (Viki). ME:DQ was my first ZRY drama and where I became a fan.

O/T. After watching ZRY in ORDINARY GREATNESS and seeing how thin he is (personal observation) it struck me that he and another favorite from kdramaland Jung Kyung-ho could pass off as maybe half siblings with JKH hyung. It would be dream casting for me to see both those guys together in a drama. Wishful thinking I know.

Japan - News shows time - Why do shoujo need a tv drama. waste of time. Better remain with cinema. there you make money.
Himawari's miyazaki promotion - It was niche - funny and maybe that's why it worked far better but to think it won award and was popular - woah. 2nd season has started now. Budget is what makes this show work.
Midsummer's Cinderellas - 4/10 - trash all the way with max. -ve reaction from audience. This writer surely not deserve the job. It is on viki and viki is good at picking worst of Japanese dramas - such a couple.
The Best Teacher - 6/10 - It was as expected - the cliche - but it did good among audience - If it can beat Conan on Web platforms that shows how much power boost it did. Matsuoka power.
Marie - 7/10 - even all the drama can't stop the power of the show. 3-4 characters surely are giving it al for the show.
Fence - 7/10 It's American military - easy to guess what the story is if you read news. well done drama. Matsuoka is in so it is good.
Wakako Zake - 6/10 - I've said it before - how come this show has so many seasons. this show is a glorious ad of booze. As a manga it works. but as multi-season show - such a sponser and advertiser it has.

TURKISH - 6/10 Family drama which is romance drama. This is how you do a family drama - korean writers can learn a lot. This is one proper family drama which goes overdramatic in every episode.
I was excepting more shows getting cancelled - It's fine 5 shows is good too.
KOREA - weekend dramas r d easiest - u already know everything. Uee's keep driving on sympathy wave which is pretty foolish self-insert.
Romance - as usual trash - 4/10 - all romance dramas - Jo Boa surely is doing good though.
Netflix korea - 4/10 - trash - high on makeup low on quality. forced romance - nonsense drama and stale action - quite a corny show with lot of korean nationalist appeasement.

ARTH - 6/10 as usual Kim ok Bin driving the whole show - hero-heroine r bleh typical of a kdrama.
CHINA - It is far more easier - You watch 10 episodes - by that time a new drama pops up - u jump to that drama - do 10 episodes - a new drama pops up - You just keep on moving from 1 drama to another.
Alliance - 4.5/10 - typical female workplace drama with romance as usual.
South Wind Knows - 4.5/10 - atleast its toned down copy-paste.
Bright eyes of firefighters - 4/10 - idol guy - copy-paste scenes - still better than previous drama.
UN Predictable family - this is kind of cousins r into cousin - by far fetched view it's incest by law - daily drama doing better job that so called weekday prime dramas

COMPLETED
My Lovely Liar - Longer than it needed to be. Just sort of petered out at the end.
Moving - I was fully prepared to write 'Perfect. No Notes' but I do have some notes. The final episode was just a tad underwhelming because there was too much focus on wrapping up everyone's stories. Plus I wanted a more brutal comeuppance for our two main villains 😠. Also happy the Kim family got to reunite but I wanted moreeee. I think my favourite part of the last 3 episodes was the focus on the North Koreans.
ONGOING
Behind Your Touch - I'm in love with the writing for this show. The mystery is still mystery-ing. Been so long since I watched a drama where the criminal wasn't obvious. I'm beginning to lean just a bit into the "there's no 3rd psychic, Gwang-sik is the killer" theory now but I'm prepared to be proven wrong 😅.
My Lovely Boxer - Ah you'd think Hee-won's wife would have been more careful after what happened. It's nice to see Kwon-sook have more positive experiences with boxing and grow accordingly. I don't think Tae-young will show up at the garden.
Destined With You - Only got a few minutes into Ep. 9 before I realised the show was ruining all the good vibes from Moving and so I didn't continue …
Watchlist - The Kidnapping Day and Song of the Bandits.
C-DRAMAS

Behind your butt : I am getting restless with the investigation. But I find it hard to believe it’s the Shaman. Hopefully we get more answers this week. But our leads and Ok Hui continue to be awesome and the show still got its humor!
Moving : Ep 13. 💔💔💔
All the happiness was short lived. Look forward to the last parent story and I will be back in the present.
Kidnapping Day: This drama turned out to be a hidden gem. I love the main duo and their interactions are absolutely wonderful, both hilarious and heartfelt at the same time. Ro-Hee continues to be a blast. I can’t wait for the next week. I need our leads to meet the good cop!
The investigation is interesting too with so many motives. I am just worried out little girl is somehow involved in the murder.
Parallel World : At Ep 20. They throw a whole bunch of things at me and I am LOST! Past life, bone of liuxi, scorpion eye revolt, beast revolt etc etc. It was too much information for me to handle. Dropped.
Stand by Me: A good coming of age drama with a lot of feels. Set in the 90’s it’s beautifully shot. The main leads are awesome. But, I am not in a right mood for this. So dropped.

My Lovely Liar (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D+ / D+ / D+ / D / D / D / D
After a 2 years plus break, Kim So Hyun graces our screens again in a story that should in theory focus on her as it involves a fantasy element exclusive to her. Little did she know, she would get upstaged by the male lead’s trauma and that murder mystery which finishes with an offensive plot twist for shock value. I hope her next show has better material for her! On a side note, I’m thrilled that she’s working with Yoon Ji On again even if he’s still a 2ML: he’s a fantastic actor in all shows I’ve watched him in. And now I continue praying for Seo Ji Hoon who’s landed himself in yet another dud.
Moving (Series review) - Mood progression: C / C / C- / C- / C- / D+ / D+
You know how old k-dramas used to have a long setup where child actors would play the main characters for a good chunk of the show’s run? Well, this show took that to the extreme and was practically in setup mode for the entire run. And though there are merits to character-based narratives as many of its acclaimers would espouse, the inclusion of the governmental grooming as well as external outsider threats from the US and subsequently NK pretty much invalidates that. If you wanted an actual story about a parent’s love for their child within a theme of superpowers, you wouldn’t pile on all the plot devices.
The Kidnapping Day (Episode 3-4) - Mood: C
Sigh, I had already expected some shenanigans regarding the brain research stuff, but the inheritance nonsense hit me like a truck. And then they threw in the terminal illness and a noble idiot for good measure. Or is the ex-wife half-lying and AIDS was a result of her being the mistress of Ro Hee’s dad? Regardless, it’s still fun to watch Ro Hee and Myeong Jun bickering.
CEO-dol Mart (Episode 1-4) - Mood: C / C
Yes, it may never be more than something we just watch on the side, but surprisingly it’s been an easy breezy watch so far. The acting needs a lot of polish, sure, but this isn’t a primetime show and I can’t be too upset at people trying to get all the experience instead of using their popularity to land leading roles. Let’s hope that the show doesn’t overcomplicate its story.
The Killing Vote (Episode 7) - Mood: D+
Well, that was a lot of backstory for things that any drama veteran have seen in other rich family corruption arcs. Still, it’s a confirmation more or less that Min Soo being Gaetal is a red herring, since our protagonists think so. Meta logic for the win!
Destined With You (Episode 9-10) - Mood: D-
Huh, just how low are they going with this 2FL? Her association with the gardener seems to suggest that she might actually remember her past life, given that she isn’t fazed by the black magic and perhaps even bullied FL in the past because of it.

Still a watchable show. The reveal of the ‘dead’ members face in the pictures and another sighting of the masked man lurking in the store unseen by the others is still making me wonder whether there is more to that story.
I loved the calculating idol shows his true colours by sharing a picture because he is shining next to his rival because he caught the ex idol with his eyes shut! The squid description of people looking ugly next to idols made me think of all of the fans thinking getting a selfie with their idol is the ultimate badge of honour. Note to self avoid being in the picture at all costs when I meet my Bogummy😆.

Fake it till you make it -Chinese
Wow what a drama; so pretty, it has a really sweet OST and a cute friends to lovers story. We spend a decent amount of time with the couple once they get together and it is a realistic adult relationship without being graphic so it is a satisfying romance with a slice of life. Office politics and city life for both main leads and the female lead has a cousin who is battling the world of relationships. This is my second short drama (14 episodes is the sweet spot for me) that has a female side character who has an immature approach to relationships that is still annoying to watch but is understandable in a teenage romance. They bring very little to the relationship but their soon to be faded looks and expect the man to be pandering to their every need and meet their high expectations re status. The last time I met this type of character was in Remembrance of things past and it felt the character was out of place in that friendship group.
My lovely liar
It was a nice fantasy romance with a thriller element. It worked best when the fantasy and romance were the focus; the side characters and murder elements were less interesting to me.
My first first love
I enjoyed this coming of age friends to lovers story.

BUTT TOUCH (Ep 11-12) This week puts more emphasis on suspects (prime ones are Hyoen-Ok’s ex-husband, Mr. Kang, Cha’s right hand man, Seon-Woo for his snarky behavior toward police and blocking of any touches, and the Shaman who already admitted he tried to kill Cha.) The Grandfather story arc has been the weakest part of the town folk stories. Jang-Yeol and Ye-bun’s working relationship seems to improve, but it could change with Grandfather’s murder. The Captain’s approach to investigation seems to be refreshing change to standard k-drama incompetent police work. The serial murder story line may have lasted too long to give a conclusion to Jang-Yeol’s Seoul story: justice against the Baek gang and resolution of Seung-Gil’s life and death.
LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE (Episode 1-2) Too many character introductions in Episode 1. We get that Uee’s family is terrible leaches; that ML’s family has been destroyed by a greedy aunt; and that all the standard weekender tropes will be put into a blender without a top to spray us with a mess for the next 25 weeks. It has all the script making of another sub-par series since ALL of the families are overloaded with bad people. Hyo-Sim as Atlas with the weight of her world solely on her shoulders seems like a grind watch.
COLD BLOODED INTERN (Ep.11-12) The takedown of Manager Ju was par for the course, but it lead to Ji Won leaving the company, having worse health issues in the midst of a jumpy three month time jump. Hae-Ra finishes her apology tour and remains with the company while it begins its employee welfare reforms. But the show suddenly ends with a new CEO, the villain from Hae-Ra and Ji Won’s first company who ruthlessly got no pregnancy policy first established to the detriment of women workers. Clearly, this final set up was a cue for a second season since so many loose ends were not tied up, but I don’t think there will be one. It was not as ground breaking as it could have been. I like the cast of Team 2, and that the fact that women were featured as having decision making control in their own lives (not waiting for men to make moves, professionally or personally). This was a vertical in-house pre-production by CJ (it produced the series and main leads are agency artists). It is probably most cost-efficient way to do a series.

I am disappointed Lapis. Are you being swayed? What does that make me? Na-yeon? Seon-ha, Hong-jo?
Fine, that office storming was swell, JK playing blind, cute. But forget all that! Remember the black belted coat of glory. #TeamShin-yu forever!

I've been swaying for a few eps, it's the corny dad jokes that got to me! 😂 how could I have forgotten the black belted coat though! A paid actor for sure, it put in the work that ep 😍

My Lovely Liar: I was so confused at the end of episode 15. It looked like the drama was over, and I actually checked - twice! - that I hadn’t just watched 16 by mistake. And what does it say about the final few episodes that it seemed plausible I had missed one and not even noticed? Eh, it had its good moments and the recaps and comments were a party.
I'm watching Mad Dog but falling behind on comments.

Ok, absolutely the same, you guys. I'm only VAGUELY paying attention to the intricacies (?) of the plot at this point... what started as a joke is now my reality: Woo Do Hwan is both the substance and the reason of my watch. THUSLY, my comments will now take the form of "live tweets," rather than anything resembling analytical thought. Onward!!

I mean, I didn’t sign up for this job, but apparently I can’t stop the super-gif-vision.
My invitation post tomorrow will have two gifs. One with a Mad Dog—Destined with You crossover, and one, you guessed it, of Woo Do-hwan in the shower.
The former makes me look smart, but the latter, yeah, that’s not beneath me. Not…at…all.

Behind Your Touch: 8.0 Who would have thought the high points of the show this week would be a mother-in-law and some baseball bats?
A Time Called You: 3.0 (for ep 8 / ) I'm stalled out part way thru ep 8, and 77.396% likely to drop it.
My Lovely Liar: 8.0 Passable, by-the-numbers conclusion. At least it was better than the previous week. And Kim So-hyun had a lot of screen time looking sweet and happy, which automatically made it better than the conclusions of many other shows.
My Lovely Boxer: 7.5
Monday: Sigh. When you encounter technical difficulties when trying to read the post about technical difficulties.
Wednesday: When you need to watch 7 episodes from 4 shows -- like the dread Friday Night of Doom only without any TGIF consolation.
Moving: 9.0 Check out the Easter Egg at the end of 20. And never just skip the end credits on Netflex / Disney shows with long credits. Seriously. FF is your friend.
Destined With You: 7.0
Han River Police: 3.0 🉐bean⌚ (that's "bargain beanwatch")
The Day: 9.0 I keep wanting to rename this "Father". If the excellent 2018 kdrama "Mother" had a mutant child with any random chaebol/crime/conspiracy show...
Backscratcher = mutant child of the Hand from Destined + the rulers kdrama teachers hit their students with?

BEHIND YOUR TOUCH: Ok-Hee is the best friend! I laughed out loud when Yoeng-Hui presented her Mother-in-law as the best weapon. The fact that the two were best friends was the icing. I felt so sorry for Haraboji. What a missed opportunity! He could have had a good relationship with his granddaughter. Instead, he hid his love for her and ignored her very existence because of a silly grudge against her father.
MY HAPPY MARRIAGE: A happy ending!
LEGEND OF FUYAO: At episode 46. Really, I wish Fuyao and Wuji had communicated their intention to Yalan Zhu. She did not need to lose her eyes to save Zhan Beiye if only she knew that the two had gone to retrieve the Earth Absorbing Bell. I just hope her eyesight is restored. At least Xioqui told him the Zhan Beiye the truth: Yalan Zhu saved him. Wuji being jealous was the cutest thing.
MY LOVELY BOXER: Will watch episode 9 and 10 together next week.
THE KIDNAPPING DAY: I like it as there are so many layers to peel off. Ro-Hee is such a brat! And whiplash smart. I love how she is calling the shots after figuring out that she was kidnapped by Myeong-Jun.

My Lovely Boxer Only one episode and our leads didn't spend time together... But the FL is on her way to get better, so it wasn't so bad.
My Lovely Liar I have a bean for another drama :p
Destined With You I just adore the leads together. They're so fun to watch. I'm still curious about the past and the curse, but I could just see our couple share time together.
Behind Your Touch Lee Min-Ki and Ha Ji-Min are the only reason I watch it.
Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun I don't recognize Saya and Eunsom now. Their personality changed as much than their face. It was weird to see Tanya and Eunsom being romantic like that...
Moving At the opposite of a lot people, I didn't find this drama incredible. The pace and story telling lost me a lot of times. There were too many characters with their past stories.
Han River Police I'm behind.
Song of the Bandits It reminded me IRIS when I was shipping the ML with the badass assassin rather than the nice spy... I was just as disappointed. 😅
CEO-dol Mart I like LSY in this role. I don't really care about the rest :p

MOVING (Ep.18-20)
Overall I enjoyed it, the critique of men in charge who care nothing for the soldiers fighting at the forefront. The super powered who would prefer not to fight but have no choice. We see this with Frank who was trained as a child solider and also the camaraderie among the North Korean soldiers. The love between parents and children and how that power can be stronger than anything else. I would’ve preferred Do-shik to have been dead, it was a little too neat at the end with their reunion imo. Bong-seok and Hee-soo were cute and if they do get a second season I hope we get more of them. Han Hyo-joo, Ryu Seung-ryong and Kim Sung-kyun were fantastic!
SURPLUS PRINCESS (Rewatch 3-10)
Sadly the show was cut down from 14 episodes to 10. The ending felt rushed but on the plus side the angst lasted only 10minutes which like never happens in kdramaland lol. This was a zany wacky romp, with plenty of slapstick and parody. I would actually say this was the blueprint for WELCOME TO WAIKIKI, there is a lot of similarities between the shows.
Anyway I played a game to try and spot all the references SURPLUS PRINCESS included and parodied:
Attack On Titan
Terminator
Frozen
Suzy, Suzy, Suzy, Suzy…so much Suzy that I don’t doubt Nam Joo-hyuk manifested being co-stars with Suzy
My Love From Another Star
G-dragon Crooked MV
Avengers with Wonder Woman and Snow White??
Steve Jobs
500 Days Of Summer
LISTEN TO LOVE (My Wife's Having an Affair this Week) Rewatch Ep 1:
I like torturing myself don’t I? Lee Sang-Yeob’s character and BoA’s character is the sole reason I’m rewatching this drama! Since I already know everything, I can ship to my hearts content without feeling guilty. This is definitely a year where I’m enamoured with side couples who will be the death of me I swear! I know I’m inflicting this on myself but the chemistry between them…the CHEMISTRY!!! Also I’m a bit of a masochist okay?!

Destined With You: *side eyes Shin-yu’s shenanigans* team SML has basically sunk but here I am jumping ship anyways half-heartedly, mainly because he’s mess free and in the world of DWY that’s a super attractive feature 😆. In a complete contradiction to that statement however, I’m very excited to see more about the OTP’s past lives next week 👀
Live Your Own Life: is great!! Set up was a lot to take in as expected, but I like that I can see the plot pieces being moved into predictable positions in a way that enhances my enjoyment rather than decreasing it. In it primarily for Uee and Ha Joon’s characters at the moment but I’m sure others will grow on me as we progress. I really wish this was an actual weekend drama for me instead of being Sun-Mon, because it would be so fun to watch in the mornings on weekends!
Tale of the Nine Tailed is giving Twilight but better and I’m here for it! It called out to me and I dropped other dramas I was watching and ran to this like I was hypnotised hahaha. I think what I’m liking the most is the speed and ground that we’re covering plot-wise so far, feels quite snappy without feeling too rushed or underdeveloped, and the serious fantasy/horror mixed in with a bit of self-aware satirical vibes, is a match that I didn’t know I needed more of.
Under The Queen’s Umbrella rewatching this one with my mum who’s watching it for the first time (and really liking it!) - still stands as one of the best sageuks ever made in my eyes (tbh one of the best dramas I’ve ever watched in general). Please make more dramas like this one!!
Dropped: Arthdal 2 because couldn’t really engage with this as much as I wanted to, maybe will pick up sometime in the future :(
Paused Dramas/Collaterals of Me Deciding to Pick Up ToNT On A Whim: Moving , Someday or One Day and Fake it Till You Make It because I’m not in the right mood to properly enjoy or pay attention to any of these three, so on the back burner for now!
Waiting for Sparkling Watermelon to become my new Tues-Wed drama and I don’t think it’s too long before The Worst of Evil graces our screens. Looks like it’s lining up to be a good spread across genres on my ‘currently watching’ list.

For me TALE OF THE NINE TAILED was good in the first half but dragged in the latter. Tho I’ll always love cocky Kim Bum. I watched it along TALE OF THE NINE TAILED 1938, which made it much easier to finish and also understand the sequel

I've heard this about the second half! So I'm going in very cautious and bar set v low, but so far so good. I also enjoyed ToTNT 1983 heaps (which I watched first) so I'm coming into this with a lot of love for Rang & Yeon and I imagine that'll get me through whatever second half might throw (hopefully haha).

HAHAH noo not dropping any time soon - I do like the mess no matter how much I've yelled at Shin-yu this week 😆 I too mentally have the backs of the writers like you - despite also not trusting them to not blow everything up. But I think the fact that I'm in for the mess and am actively liking the messes thus far means I'm immune to any crazy plot points that will come up I think (let's hope I don't jinx them into doing something insane 🤡).
YAY more GIFs, you're like Dramabean's resident Santa GIF Claus, except every day is Christmas!! 😍
Give Nine Tailed a go! I'd love to hear your thoughts on it whenever you get around to it.
Also your comment just made me realise the Watermelon show has like four different names! Honestly, though 'sparkling watermelon' makes me thirsty just typing it, PPL before the show even airs - hope they capitalise on it!! 😂

They always do Watermelon PPL in every show if there is a ‘we must indicate it’s summer’ scene. Exhibit one someone is struggling to carry it in the net bag
Exhibit two they are scooping it out and enjoying it for refreshment purposes
Exhibit three spitting the seeds out, sticking seeds on face etc.
